MANILA, Philippines – Authorities at Manila’s airport found a newborn baby in a garbage bag that was apparently unloaded from an airplane that landed Sunday from the Middle East, officials said. Security officials brought the baby boy, who was covered in blood and wrapped in tissue paper, to an airport clinic, where doctors and nurses examined him and cleaned him up, wrapped him in cloth and gave him a bottle of milk, airport officials said. “After he was cleaned, he let off a soft cry,” airport nurse Kate Calvo
said. “He was healthy, his vital signs were OK according to our doctors.” A security officer noticed something moving in a garbage bag that was reportedly unloaded from a Gulf Air plane that landed earlier and found the baby inside, an airport statement said. The baby was later turned over to social workers posted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Gulf Air officials were not immediately available for comment. Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman said she was outraged by what happened and would order officials to try to locate the infant’s mother, who could be criminally charged. Continued on page 6

Traffic of private cars coming out of Bali since last Idul Fitri was heavy enough. Accumulation in the area of Gilimanuk Harbor occurred in the morning until late afternoon. It was estimated those were private cars of Bali citizen going on holiday or visiting friends in Java. Based on observations made last Friday (Sep 10) evening and Saturday (Sep 11), Gilimanuk Harbor was more crowded by private cars. Even, the whole area of parking lot at the harbor last Friday afternoon was filled by private cars. Such a condition was estimated to continue until Sunday. The reason was that domestic tourists in Bali would be back to Java. Meanwhile, the traffic of motorbikes ran more smoothly and no accumulation occurred as on the previous days. Nyoman Gamia, one of the residents of Jembrana admitted to intentionally cross with friends to meet one of the
colleagues in Banyuwangi. “Yes, we would like to visit friends as many colleagues are there. In fact, it is a bit crowded. We are still in the harbor from this afternoon until evening,” he said. Meanwhile, Mariati, a resident of Banyubiru, claimed that she with family was also going to maintain kinship relation with her family in Rogojampi, Banyuwangi. “We have many brothers there. I think the traffic on Idul Fitri is quiet, but in reality, many people also cross,” she said. However, this mother of two children claimed she was not in the long queue before entering the ship because she was in the same entourage

To become a favorite icon A sanctum to invoke blessing and world’s safety of Klungkung tourism Sanitation of Lembongan poorly maintained
UNIVERSAL or kahyangan jagat temple being very famous in Nusa Penida, Klungkung, is the Dalem Penataran Peed Temple. Its temple anniversary coincides with Buda Cemeng Klawu falling every six months. By and large, the festivity takes place or nyejer for five days. Similar celebration occurred on the recent grandiose anniversary whose peak ensued last Saturday (Sep 8). The anniversary procession lasted for five days and ended this Monday (Sep 13) morning. During the nyejer period, Hindu devotees from various regions had adequate opportunity to say prayers. Hindu devotees—living outside Nusa Penida—wishing to say prayers to Dalem Peed have to cross the sea. Crossing time required is approximately 30 minutes from Padangbai Harbor and approximately one hour from Benoa Harbor, Denpasar, by ship. Similarly, people can get there from Sanur Beach by riding traditional boat or jukung. Devotees do not only worship during the temple festival, but also on particular days with the purpose of invoking holy water in the series of large religious ceremony in the temples of customary villages. There are four temple’s courtyards getting coalesced into the area of Penataran Agung Peed. The temples consist of Segara Temple located on the northernmost section near seaside. Segara Temple is used to venerate the Lord Varuna. Few meters toward the south follows the Taman Temple surrounded by a pond. This temple is functioned as a sanctum of purification and the abode of Ida Bhatara Ulun Danu.
Meanwhile, in the west lies the Ratu Gede Temple as the abode of Ida Ratu Gede Mas Mecaling. Then, in the east lies the Penataran Temple as the abode of Ida Batara Lingsir or Ratu Mas. Devotees generally start their praying from Segara Temple, then resumed to Taman Temple, Ratu Gede Temple and end at Penataran Peed Temple. In Segara Temple lies a shrine with a huge fish effigy. Meanwhile, at Taman Temple also lies a shrine with palm fiber roof and surrounded by pond. Between the pond and the shrine stands a dividing wall. Similar shrine also exists in the Ratu Gede Temple. To enter the temple, there are three arched entrance gates to choose from. In the meantime, the Penataran Peed has many shrines in a row on the east side and north side. Somewhat to the center stands a big tall chamber building. A Padmasana shrine exists in the temple complex where it is situated in northeast facing to the southwest. Coordinator of the temple priest of Penataran Peed, Mangku Gede Mundra accompanied by Jero Mangku Selamet from Gianyar, said that devotees usually invoked blessing or safety of the universe along with its contents. However, there were also people begging to sharpen their spiritual knowledge. “Devotees come to worship with various petitions, such as healthy, tranquility, safety, blessing up to sharpening spiritual knowledge and so forth,” Jero Mangku Selamet added. Meanwhile, a lecturer at the Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN Denpasar), Ketut Wiana, in his book entitled Mengenal Pura Sad Kahyangan dan
Kahyangan Jagat (Introduction to Sad Kahyangan and Kahyangan Jagat Temples) published by Pustaka Bali Post says that Dalem Penataran Peed in Nusa Penida is a temple to venerate the Almighty God as the creator and Purusha (cosmic male) and Prakriti (cosmic female). Purusha poses the power of the soul or spiritual power giving breath to life in nature along its contents. Prakriti denotes material physical strength or physical resources embodying into the real strength of Purusha. In Dalem Penataran Peed, Ida Batara Dalem Peed is venerated in the Gedong shrine, while the shrine of Ratu Gede Nusa is situated in different area, namely in the western of Dalem Penataran Peed shrine. Shrine of Dalem Penataran Peed is located in the east, while Padmasana shrine as representation of Batara on Mount Agung located in the north of Dalem Penataran Peed area. Dalem Penataran Peed poses unification of the worship of Shiva on Mount Agung and Goddess Durgha or Goddess Uma in Puncak Mundi Temple. In short, Dalem Penataran Peed is functioned for veneration of Shiva-Durgha and the worship of king called Dalem Temple. It is known as the Penataran Peed because the temple serves as the courtyard of Puncak Mundi Temple and worship of Goddess Uma-Durgha. The temple symbolizes the meeting point of Purusha element of Batara on Mount Agung and the Goddess Uma-Durgha in Puncak Mundi. As a tourism icon, Klungkung Regency in fact does not necessarily make Nusa Lembongan, Jungutbatu and its surrounding areas draw more attentions. It occurs especially to environmental sanitation and the objects becoming a tourist attraction. On the contrary, it lacks for attention to sanitation in and around Lembongan Island. These conditions are worried to have an impact on the decrease of tourist visits. Complaints about the lack for concern about the sanitation of Lembongan are not only delivered by tourists, but also by tourism perpetrator and observer from local village, namely Made Senaya. “Yes, frankly speaking, I also regret it very much. Attention to sanitation in Lembongan is very low,” he said last Friday (Sep 10). As a matter of fact, he said a number of large cruise ships made money by selling the uniqueness of Lembongan, one of the three small islands in the Nusa Penida, every day. At least, he said, those cruise ships conveyed passenger amounting to 300 tourists to Lembongan with a fairly expensive rate. “Unfortunately, the contribution to Lembongan is only IDR 1,000 per person. It is very
small. Hence, the sanitation management handled by local customary village is not maximal,” pointed out Senaya. According to him, the management of the cruise ships should pay attention to the sanitation, too. At least, they provided more contributions to the region so the customary village could prepare janitors. Or they could directly get involved to the field by giving assistance in the form of funds or trash cans. “By doing so, it will engender a balance and sustainability between the making of money and participation in maintaining the environmental sanitation,” he said. Ideally, Lembongan should be clean as what promoted. He expected it would certainly not disappoint the tourists visiting the island. Otherwise, it might ultimately decrease their visits. More ironically, he said, there were persons attempting “to sell” Lembongan by claiming a number of land and objects in Nusa Penida as their own. The promotion sale was done indirectly through the Internet. On that account, he invited all relevant stakeholders to promote the tourism of Lembongan Island. Lebaran, Tourists packed in Tanah Lot As previous Lebaran/Idul Fitri days, Tanah Lot tourist attraction always flooded by foreign and domestic tourists. Even the cloudy weather and pouring rain were unavoidable, Tanah Lot is still a favourite destination for their holiday especially domestic tourists. Since D-2 (2 days before Lebaran), the flow of the visitors have been increasing. Thousands of tourists came from various Indonesia’s cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bogor, Malang, Sidoarjo, Bandung, Jogjakarta even Makassar. The number visitors came on 10th September 2010 were 10.830 people is an increase of 48.13 % compared to last year which was 7.311. This time is a bit different because the holiday is one time with the weekend and a holiday for most people. So since D-2 it has been packed especially in the afternoon. It is seen in the morning the vehicles queue from the object’s border to its ticket gate and in 12.30 pm wita the spare parking space in an empty land and Surya Mandala Cutural Park were packed yet visitors kept coming. It is predicted on Sunday will be the peak of the crowds and with the parking space provided it is hoped can fill up 4 to 6 wheels vehicles. Especially with Surya Mandala Cutural Park view towards the blue ocean will added up satisfaction and comforts the visitors of Tanah Lot.
From its security, management has been providing securities on location and also for more guaranteed security there has been added CCTV in crowded points. “With this we hope there won’t be any situation that will disadvantage the tourists. Free medical services on first day besieged by residents Semarapura (Bali Post)—
The first day of free medical services organized by Bali Post Media Group (KMB) in Nusa Penida Ashram in the series of temple anniversary (piodalan) of Ped Temple, last Thursday (Sep 9), was besieged by residents. They comprised local people and devotees from Bali Mainland saying prayers to Ped Temple. They came and went to ashram for getting health check-ups and free medical treatment denoting collaboration with the doctors and nurses from Surya Husada Hospital. Medical officers getting involved in the activity included physicians Gusti Ngurah Agung (coordinator), Diana, Yustra, Nyoman Netty Santyari and nurses such as Putu Darsini, Karmila Dewi, Ni Kadek Ari Supardiani, Serinadi and I.B. Susrama. Residents came up with various health complaints such as rheumatism, skin diseases, eyes, back pain, muscle aches, joint aches and fever. They were largely of the elderly. However, there were also a number of children suddenly suffering from fever and vomiting. They came from different regions of Bali mainland like Padangbai, Bangli and others. Accompanied by their parents, they came to ashram with complaints of fever and vomiting. “My son suddenly got fever and vomiting after saying
prayers,” said a mother from Padangbai. Since she knew there was a medical check-up post, she confessed to come directly to ashram for checking up the health of her son. Meanwhile, some other patients instead asked for an injection. “Yes, there is also a disease perceived psychologically. Hence, they felt more complete if they were injected in the treatment,” said physician Gusti Ngurah Agung. It was said, the doctors and nurses of Surya Husada Hospital were always ready to cooperate with any institutions to hold social activities such as free medical treatment. The treatment was not only intended for common citizens, but also for temple priests and oblation makers at the Ped Temple. They really needed to consume nutrition or vitamin supplements to keep their body fit in serving devotees saying prayers. Moreover, they had to be ready from early morning until the next morning to serve the congregation. “We judge that free medical treatment is very important, chiefly devotees feeling fatigue and lacking for vitamins after the crossing and overcrowding when joining the prayers. Not only that, such services could also help the less fortunate people so they could afford a better health care,” pointed out Jero Mangku Paang and Jero Mangku Suasta.

Development Not Happening Tri Hita Karana Implementation Not Maximal Denpasar City development concept planned by Mayor IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra targeting to the vision of creating Denpasar acknowledging culture with balance continuing harmony truthfully to Tri Hita Karana philosophy (three harmonic connection: with God, people and environment). This philosophy is adopted to be the base to Denpasar’s development. Yet, in realiaty, it’s not that easy to plan such thing. For sure, still a lot of physic constructions in Denpasar were silently violating regulations due to its demarcation line, avoiding Balinese original ornaments and others. The data from Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) for last July 2010, the total of violations connecting to the constructions reached 93 cases. From this number, the Building Permit violations were 72 cases and demarcation
line 19 cases. This shows how high space using violations still are in Denapasar. These cases weren’t the first time anymore. Before, DTRP took action to at least 335 building owners by giving warning letters. An lately it’s not rare Peace and Order Agency (Dinas Tramtib) and Police Civil Service (SatPol PP) who’s also agency who can confiscate businesses who are stepping out the Region Regulations of Denpasar City. Head of Denpasar DTRP, Ir. Made Kusuma Diputra, MT said those warning letters were given as they are not following the valid regulations for example not following demarcation line, outside the green zone or the city’s green open space (RTHK), also no building permits. This letter will be a first warning and if there are more violations, there’ll be more supervising, “If that from supervising a violation occurred there will be a first warning letter.”
If this first letter is ignored, then there’ll be a second one. Then there’ll be a third one and goes through to Tramtib Agency as well. Taking it down action or other sanctions will be done by Region Regulations regulators or in this case it’s Tramtib and SatPol PP. It is admitted from the 335 cases that happened all this time, at most it connects to the building permits. Lots of building owners don’t want to take care of it so warning letters goes most due to building permits. More of it was most for demarcation line. For the future, there’ll be an arrangement for buildings presentation in Denpasar City which means those that are on main routs were hoped to use Balinese ornaments. At least, for its base arrangement it will use guardianship as base in taking action, “To arrange the front face of the buildings, we will use guardianship law base.” (ara)

For that an education and acknowledgement of these pollutions has to be implemented to the people.”
He suggested to group different kinds of rubbishes: organic, non-organic and plastic, which is done in hotels should be done outside too, “Earth Check is an award and certificate given to services companies including tourism services who are very concentrating to preserve environment even its energy source using.” BTDC First Director, Ir. I Made Mandra mentioned, they feel proud that since BTDC operated they have been implementing preserving concepts which has been an issue to the people, “Since the beginning, BTDC has restricted the use of water from the well because it worries

These don’t suit Balinese culture values which were symbolised in Butha Yadnya ceremonies which is to protect the harmony and preservation of the environment, “BTDC have used the principal of Reduce, Recycle and Reuse rubbishes to become compos, 4000 cubic meters of used water are recycled to be an irrigation water.” Mandra also asked all hotels to must implement Earth Check’s criteria. SYDNEY – Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard Saturday named former leader Kevin Rudd as her foreign minister, less than three months after she staged a sudden and ruthless coup against him. The nation’s first woman leader announced the appointment as she made sweeping changes to her cabinet, after last week ensuring her hold on power after elections failed to hand victory outright to her centreleft Labor Party. Gillard, who leads a minority government supported by one Greens MP, two country independents and a former Iraq war whistleblower, had promised that Rudd would be a senior member of her ministry if she won re-election. “The foreign affairs and defence team will be Kevin Rudd as minister for foreign affairs and Stephen Smith as the minister for defence,” Gillard said, ending weeks of speculation concerning the fate of Rudd, a Mandarin-speaking former diplomat known for his interest in global affairs. Smith, who has served as foreign minister since Rudd led Labor to power in a November 2007 landslide election victory, will become defence minister to fill a vacancy left by John Faulkner’s move to the backbench. Rudd was suddenly ousted as prime minister by Gillard on June 24 after he lost the support of his Labor Party colleagues following a series of policy backflips and as his ratings slipped in the polls. The 52-year-old, who was report-
edly left devastated by his lightning removal from power, said he was honoured to take on the new role. “There are national interests of this country which extend far beyond the personal interests of any individual. GENEVA – British Defense Secretary Liam Fox said on Saturday that Britain’s “battle against terrorism” in Afghanistan was not the end of the global struggle, and the country must be prepared to act elsewhere in future. Speaking to a meeting of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) think tank, Fox said pulling British troops from Afghanistan before 2015 would boost militants everywhere, because only by then would British forces, working with the U.S.-led coalition, have achieved their security aims. Fox told the gathering in Geneva of military officers and strategists that British defense planners conducting a review of military priorities had to take account of the possibility that its forces might have to intervene again elsewhere in the world. “We’re going to have a long-term battle against transnational terrorism and it will pop up in a lot of different places over a long period and we are going to have to face up to that,” he said.
One of the lessons of recent British defense history, he added, was that combat troops should not be deployed unless authorities were willing to give them the resources to carry out their work. “That’s one of the things we are grappling with in the new defense review in the UK because this will not be the last time, I would venture to guess, that we might be faced with such a situation.” There was a diminished appetite for intervention globally, but often war was not something countries had any choice about. “No one would imagine the U.S. would have gone into Afghanistan... Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TEHRAN, Iran – A senior Iranian prosecutor said Sunday that authorities will release a jailed American woman on $500,000 bail because of health problems, another sudden about-face by Iran in a case that has added to tension with the United States. The news came during a weekend of start-and-stop announcements about the release of Sarah Shourd, who was detained with two friends, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, along the Iran-Iraq border on July 31, 2009, and accused of spying. There were no details on when she would be released. Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi said the conditions of her bail did not bar her from leaving the country, though her case will still go to trial along with those of the other two Americans, who must remain in custody. “Based on reports and the ap-
proval of the relevant judge about the sickness of Ms. Shourd, her detention was converted to $500,000 bail, and if the bail is deposited, she can be released,” the official IRNA news agency quoted Dowlatabadi as saying. Shourd’s mother has said she has been denied treatment for serious health problems, including a breast lump and precancerous cervical cells. The prosecutor said the decision has been relayed to her lawyer. Reached by telephone, her lawyer, Masoud Shafiei, refused to make any immediate comment. Shourd, who has been held in solitary confinement, was to have been released Saturday as an act of clemency to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan after the intervention of Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. But the judiciary abruptly halted that planned release, indicating such a decision would have to first go through the courts.

MEXICO CITY – Mexican police carried out the controlled detonation of a car bomb Saturday in the troubled border city of Ciudad Juarez, across from Texas. A phone tip around midnight led authorities to a dead body in a car in a shopping center parking lot, the federal Public Safety Department said in a statement. In a second car, police found the bomb. Agents deactivated the device and removed most of the explosive material to analyze it before safely detonating the vehicle, the department said. There were no injuries. Juarez is the same city where drug traffickers staged the first successful car bombing in Mexico, killing three people in July. There have been three other vehicle explosions in recent weeks in Ciudad Victoria, capital of the border state of Tamaulipas. Ciudad, across from El Paso, Texas, has been one of the cities most affected by Mexico’s drug violence. More than 2,100 people have been murdered there so far this year — putting it on
pace to surpass its previous high of 2,700, set last year. The U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami said Sunday that Igor had top sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kph) and is moving west at 18 mph (30 kph). The storm is forecast to continue in this general direction during the next couple of days, but should slow down some. Igor is expected to continue to strengthen and could become a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph (178 kph) by Monday night. The storm poses no immediate threat to land.

Iskandar Hasan said here on Saturday. He said 261 people sustained serious injuries and 497 others light injuries in the traffic accidents. “During the Ketupat Operations 2010 the numbers of traffic violations were recorded at 20,849 with 18,653 motorists ticketed,” he said. He said police also recorded a total of 1,774 criminal offenses, consisting of 1,346 conventional crimes and 478 other crimes. Police deployed 89,521 personnel and set up 2,592 security posts across
the country during the Ketupat operations. The security posts were set up in the areas considered vulnerable to traffic accidents and criminal offenses. Police will conduct the Ketupat operations until September 18 by cooperating with the relevant ministries. Five areas have received priority attention during the operations, namely traffic flows, traffic accidents, crimes, center of public activities and weather conditions. The government estimates the number of travelers to celebrate Lebaran post-fasting festivities in their hometowns this year amounting 15.5 million.

JAKARTA - A blind man was trampled to death in a crowd jostling for a turn to exchange Idul Fitri greetings with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the palace here on Friday. Joni Malela, who was 45 years old, died in an ambulance that was taking him to hospital after falling to the ground and trampled in a rush at the front gate of the State Secretariat building. According to witnesses, Joni tried to get out of the crowd but he could not, and was even pushed forward and finally trampled to death. A Jakarta health officer who was standing by at the gate, Theresia Indah Susanti, said Joni was weak when he was taken to the ambulance and he died after being treated for 10 minutes.
“He was given oxygen but he did not react to it, and died,” she said. Theresia said Joni died with no injuries and therefore it was believed he had died of suffocation after being trampled on. The body of the blind man from Cinangka, Bogor, West Java, was then taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. Thousands of people gathered at the gate of the State Secretariate to get a turn to shake hands with President Susilo BambangYudhoyono on the occasion of Idul Fitri. Dozens of other people also fainted after being squeezed while seeking entry into the palace. The country‘s quality of overall infrastructure increased from 96th to 90th, intellectual property protection from 67th to 58th, national savings

DENPASAR - Hotel occupancy rates in the resort island of Bali are estimated to increase by up to 90 percent during the Lebaran post-fasting month festivities this year, a spokesman said. “Based on the results of our monitoring the number of tourist arrivals in the resort island is quite good with the average hotel occupancy rates ranging from 80 percent to 90 percent,” Secretary of the Bali Chapter of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) Pery Markus said here on Sunday. “Most of the hotel guests are domestic tourists hailing from Jakarta and Surabaya, among others,” he said. Data from the Bali tourism office show that the number of hotel rooms in Bali reached 46,014 at the end of 2009. Last year, more than 2.2 million foreign tourists visited Bali and stayed an average of 8.75 days
there, while the number of domestic tourists reached 3.5 million with the length of stay averaging three days. The province now has 157 star hotels with 21.118 rooms and 1,037 non-star hotels with 20,516 rooms, not to mention cottages. Of the total hotel rooms, 26,387 are found in Badung district.

GIANYAR - Bali’s archaeological authorities are to lift four ancient sarcophaguses found recently in the Banjar Kembengan area, Tulikup, Gianyar district, from their excavation site after the Idul Fitri holidays on Monday (Sept 13), a spokesperson said. “Perhaps on Monday (Sept 13), after Idul Fitri, the Archaeological Objects Conservation Agency will move the sarcophaguses from their excavation site to the agency’s holding facility at Bedulu, Blahbatuh,” Ayu Kusumawati, a researcher of the Denpasar Archaeological Service, said here Saturday. The four sarcophaguses were discovered in a pandanus plantation owned by a local named I Gusti Nyoman Dirga, located about three kilometers east of a site at Subak Saba, Keramas, Gianyar district, where two other sarcophaguses were found earlier. “According to the archeologists, the four sarcophaguses are about 2,500 years old, or date back to 500 BC - 100 AD,” Dirga told reporters. “When I was digging the soil at the pandanus plantation, my hoe hit something hard. When I examined it, it proved to be a stone casket,” Dirga said. Concerned about the find, Dirga on Tuesday (Aug 31) reported it to Kelian, an official of Banjar Kembengan. “Mr. Kelian then reported to the police in Gianyar city and on Tuesday (Aug 31) night, the police came to check the location,” he said. Dirga said it was the second time ancient objects were found on his land. In 1998, a similar sarcophagus was unearthed at the pandanus plantation.

Archaeological heritage in Bali Archaeological researches in Bali have found a number of archeological heritages, which belonged to prehistoric and historic remains. Prehistoric remains proved the earliest of the people’s life, started from hunting and food gathering through cultivation up to mastering the advanced technology. Such remains indicated the struggle and the achievement of the people’s life gradually, after adapting and exploring their environment its natural resources for their life, because the nature was still quite dangerous. On the other hands, the remains also demonstrated the relationship of the prehistoric Balinese people to those who lived in Java, Sumatera etc, even to the South-East Asian people. The most important of the prehistoric live in Bali is the invention of the metallic technology along with the megalithic tradition. During the advance technology the Balinese people have produced several kind of bronze goods for ritual purpose such as kettledrums and for daily uses as well such as axes etc. Mastering the advance technology, Balinese people have succeeded to develop stone moulds in the village of Manuaba (Gianyar) for casting bronze kettledrum. The human-mask decoration, showed a remarkable similarities to the decorations of the huge kettledrums found in the village of Pejeng not so far of the east of Manuaba, but the stone moulds of Manuaba are small in its size. It should be noted here that bronze kettledrums were not only found in Bali, but also in Java, and Eastern Indonesian Island. Another bronze moulds made of clay were also found in West Java, but not for producing
kettledrums, but for making spearheads, axes, etc. Regarding the human-mask decorations, which were founds on the kettledrums of Pejeng, on the stone moulds of Manuaba and on the number of the sarcophagi found in Bali, was regarded as symbol of the leader’s or the ancestor’s spirits. The people believed that the spirit, who were abode on the top of the mountain or on the inaccessible place have the magic power for protecting the living society. When Hinduism have spread widely in Indonesia, the people believed to the sacred mountain as the place of the Hindu pantheons and the ancestor’s spirit as well. Based on this conception, then the people built their temples on the mountain area such as as Pura Besakih on the slope of Mount Agung. Along with the development of the metallic industry, the megalithic tradition increased not only in Bali, but also in Sumatera, Flores etc. Several kinds of megalithic remains were founds there namely menhirs, dolmens, menhirstatues, stepped pyramids etc. It is a matter of facts that the megalithic tradition have strongly influenced the people’s life and it is not surprising any more that living megalithic tradition could be found until to present day in Nias, Toraja, Bali and Eastern Indonesians Islands. In Bali, the megalithic remains, exe the sarcophagi are regarded as sacred monuments and functioned for worshipping thje Hindu Trinity, the local deities and the ancestor’s spirit (Sutaba 1984). This is another unique village besides the traditional village of Penglipuran. It offers plenty uniqueness, which are different to those owned by Penglipuran. The people have a different socio-life. Their houses are arranged in uniqe patterns and made of Bamboos. Mass marriage is another uniqueness owned by the village. In this ritual, many couples are doing their wedding rituals together, which are held at their Penataran Agung Temple. These event is conducted a Sasih Kadasa (around April-October). The other different tradition worth knowing is the burial ritual. The corpse is carried by two people to the cemetery, running. Arriving at the place, the corpse’s cover is unveiled, making it naked. Then it is rolled down into the hole for burying that has been prepared. Afterward, it is covered, face up-down-ward, overlooking northwestward. Traditional arts also evolve well here, with arts like Baris Jangkang, Baris Jojor, Baris Perasi, Baris Perancak, Baris Blongsong, Baris Bajra, Baris Juntal and Baris Dapdap Dance. The dances are often performed at the village temple. The so-caleed Perang Papah is a unique tradition where performers hit each other using the stems of banana leaves. It is performed at Pedunungan Temple on Balinese calendar of Purnama Sasih Kenem (around December).

BUSINESS Taiwan-China pact to reduce tariffs takes effect Associated Press Writer
TAIPEI - A pact that will reduce tariffs on hundreds of products traded between Taiwan and China took effect Sunday, a significant step for the Taiwanese president’s efforts to forge closer trade ties with Beijing. The Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement both sides signed in late June also lets Taiwanese firms enter banking and insurance markets in China to further boost bilateral trade that amounts to $110 billion annually. Taiwan’s Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council and China’s Ministry of Commerce announced the effective date of the pact on their websites Saturday, starting the tariffreducing process. Taiwan has said the duties on some Chinese products will be lowered starting next year, while Beijing has not set a date when duties will be reduced on the Taiwanese products. The agreement reduces Chinese tariffs on 539 Taiwanese products, including machine tools, textiles and
car parts. Those products value around $13.8 billion, about 16 percent of the mainland’s imports from the island in 2009. In return, Taiwan will slash duties on 267 Chinese items totaling $2.86 billion, about 10.5 percent of the mainland exports to the island last year. Among some of those products are agricultural produce and textiles. The tariffs are to be eliminated in three stages over the next two years, under the bilateral pact. Taiwanese President Ma Yingjeou has hailed the pact as necessary to prevent Taiwan’s economic marginalization as Beijing strengthens its commercial ties to its Asian neighbors and has said it would help reduce tensions between the island and mainland China.
On Saturday, China’s Ministry of Commerce highlighted the pact’s paramount role in stimulating bilateral trade exchanges. “We believe the implementation of the pact will further promote exchanges and cooperation in crossstrait trade and help cross-strait economies develop together,” Spokesman Yao Jian said in the statement on the ministry’s website. Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. Beijing continues to claim the island as part of its territory and threatens to attack if Taiwan moves to formalize independence. After taking office in May 2008, Ma has moved to improve relations between the sides to boost Taiwan’s sluggish economy and avoid possible cross-strait conflicts.

THESSALONIKI – Prime Minister George Papandreou offered no handouts to austerity-weary Greeks but gave some relief to companies struggling with recession in a main speech on the economy on Saturday. Bound by the conditions of a 110-billion-euro ($140 billion) EU/ IMF bailout deal to rescue Greece from bankruptcy, his Socialist government has imposed tax rises and draconian salary and pension cuts to fight deficits, prompting strikes and protests. “We are fighting for the survival of Greece,” Papandreou said in his annual economic policy speech at a trade fair in the northern city of Thessaloniki. “Either we’ll win together, or we’ll sink together.” About 20,000 people marched through the city to protest against belt-tightening measures. A few hundred youths tried to break through police lines cordoning off the venue and were pushed back with tear gas in clashes that lasted a few minutes. Papandreou said his government will continue pushing reforms and opening up sectors of the economy such as electricity and freight transport and also overhaul loss-making state firms including
Hellenic Railways (OSE). “I ask all the country’s productive forces to join us, to support this great change,” he said. Bowing to calls from the business world buckling under a deepening recession, he said he would speed up relief for corporations by bringing forward planned cuts in retained earnings tax to 20 from 24 percent in 2011 instead of 2014. But he avoided concrete pledges to a restive public that has taken to the streets in sometimes violent protests this year, reluctant to displease international lenders or risk the next installment of the loan due in the last quarter. “We are still at the start of our effort. I don’t want to make big promises but I understand the difficulties poor pensioners face,” he said. “I will ask the finance minister to do his best depending on how revenues go.” Despite the harsh measures, opinion polls show his Socialist party ahead of the conservative opposition. A poll by Kappa Research for To Vima on Sunday, showed the Socialists would win 29.1 percent of the vote versus 21.3 percent for the conservatives if elections were held now. Last October, Papandreou capitalized on a wave of anger at
scandals to trounce his conservative rival, Costas Karamanlis, who broke the tradition of making generous promises at the Thessaloniki fair and told Greeks he would freeze public sector salaries, eventually losing the election. But huge deficits inherited from the conservatives plunged Greece into a debt crisis that shook the euro zone and international lenders stepped in to rescue the country in exchange for tough fiscal measures. Consumption has been hit as public sector wages were cut by 15 percent, pensions by 10 percent and value added tax increased by 4 percentage points to 23 percent. The economy is set to contract by 4 percent this year and unemployment hit 11.6 percent in July from 8.6 the year before. Declining consumption is hurting state revenues and threatening targets to cut the deficit to 8.1 of GDP this year from 13.6 percent in 2009. “The market is pretty worried about whether the government will find the golden medium to kick start the economy and secure the revenues that are missing,” an Athens-based analyst said. “Only if they manage to find this golden medium, will the country be able to get out of this tunnel.”

BEIJING - China’s inflation edged higher in August as the nation’s worst flooding in a decade drove an increase in food costs and industrial growth continued to quicken. Consumer prices rose 3.5 percent in August compared with a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics announced Saturday. It was the highest level in 22 months and a small increase over July’s 3.3 percent. Much of the increase was fueled by a jump in food prices, which rose by 7.5 percent because summer storms and floods ruined crops and disrupted shipping. Overall, the country’s Consumer Price Index, increased 2.8 percent year-on-year in the first eight months of 2010, said Sheng Laiyun, the NBS spokesman. The Chinese government had set a target of trying to keep inflation within 3 percent for the year. Sheng downplayed concerns about rising inflation, saying: “There are factors fueling price rises, but I think there are even more factors reducing prices.” Industrial growth accelerated slightly to 13.9 percent year-on-year in August from July’s 13.4 percent increase as China’s recovery continues. “For the past three months, it has fluctated between 13 percent to 14 percent so it’s obvious that industrial operations have shifted from fast growth to stable growth now,” Sheng said.
All 39 industries saw year-onyear growth in August, with textiles up 11.6 percent; chemical materials and products up 12.9 percent; general equipment manufacturing up 20.1 percent, and transportation equipment manufacturing up 16.6 percent, Sheng said. Analysts expect inflation will remain in check, with the food price spike expected to have only a temporary effect. Overall, China will continue to see a modest slowing in industrial growth by year’s end. “On closer examination, underlying inflation remains subdued, and in the details the growth data points to a continued slowdown in the months ahead,” said Tom Orlik, an analyst in Beijing for Stone & McCarthy Research Associates. “We see little in the August data to change the narrative of slowing growth and fading inflation in the final months of the year, or to spark a policy response from the government China’s power generation in August rose 12.6 percent from a year earlier to 390.3 billion kilowatthours, Sheng added. Meanwhile, retail sales of consumer goods hit 1.257 billion yuan ($185 million) in August, marking an 18.4 percent rise year on year. Sheng said the increase in consumption in August was mainly attributed to better-than-expected auto sales. Investment in factories and other fixed assets also increased, reaching 14.1 trillion yuan ($2.1 billion) in the first eight months this year, a yearon-year increase of 24.8 percent.

SHANGHAI – California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said during a visit Sunday to the Shanghai Expo that his state would bid to host the 2020 World Expo in the technology hub of Silicon Valley. “As the hub of innovation, Silicon Valley is the most natural place to hold the Expo, which will promote the international exchange of ideas, create jobs and increase revenues in our state,” Schwarzenegger said. Schwarzenegger, who is on a sixday trade mission to Asia that also will take him to Japan and South Korea, made the announcement in a press conference at the USA pavil-
ion at the Shanghai World Expo. “Shanghai demonstrated that when you host the World Expo, the world comes to you and I want the world to come to California,” he said. A formal hosting application will be submitted next year, with a decision expected in 2012. Silicon Valley, along the southern rim of San Francisco Bay, is the heart of California’s technology industry. The area is home to world-leading computer and Internet companies like Apple, Google and Yahoo. The Hollywood star and bodybuilder is travelling with nearly 100 leaders from sectors including technology, tourism and entertainment. The governor, whose state has been hit hard by the global recession, had vowed before the trip that he would act as a “salesman-in-chief” for California in a bid to better tap growing Asian markets like China. Saying he was “very impressed” by Shanghai’s high-speed rail system, he said he hoped Chinese firms would bid for high-speed rail construction in his state. The Shanghai World Expo, which opened May 1 and closes at the end of October, has been a showcase of world culture and technology and the latest example of China’s growing clout, after the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The three Asian countries on Scharzenegger’s itinerary are key trade partners of his state. In 2009, California exported 120 billion dollars’ worth of goods to over 220 foreign markets, including 27 billion dollars to China, Japan and South Korea. Along with Francois Truffaut et Jean-Luc Godard, he was an icon of French New Wave cinema, with all three writing for the renowned Cahiers du Cinema. He authored dozens of films over more than 50 years, from his first work, Le Beau Serge, made in 1958 thanks to his wife’s inheritance, to his last film, Bellamy, starring Gerard Depardieu which was released in 2009.

Gates said he hoped to raise awareness “that the (US) school system is not working well today” and encourage fixes. “The global economy requires people to be better educated,” he said. In the United States, “We need some real reforms.” Gates noted that companies like Microsoft are finding it harder to recruit skilled workers in the United States, and said many local recruits actually immigrated to the United States. “If you look at computer science departments in the top (US) schools, the majority (of students) are not US-

Guggenheim told reporters he aimed with his latest movie to “attack this mental block that a lot a of Americans have, which is that the problems with our schools are too complex, they’ve been broken too long and it’s impossible.” “I think that was true about global warning,” the subject of his last documentary with Al Gore, he said. “There was a disconnect. You read about polar bears and you read about ice caps melting, but you couldn’t put it all together.” “If a film punctures through that disconnect, then people feel like it is possible and they can fix our schools,” he said, lamenting that 1.2 million kids drop out of school in America every year. VIENNA - It is a dazzling array of birds, fans and intricate structures, all made simply from folded linen: a lost Renaissance art that has been revived for a Vienna exhibit called “Folded Beauty”. But the new show at the Imperial Furniture Collection isn’t really about napkins. And to be honest, it isn’t really an exhibit either, says the artist behind it, more of a life-sized research project. Joan Sallas, 47, a Catalan master of folding techniques, spent three months folding 200 metres (656 feet) of linen into more than 100 objects for the show. All are copies of 16th- and 17th-century originals, but his only guides were old engravings and documents describing imperial and royal banquets. So his work was akin to deciphering a coded message, Sallas explained at a preview of the show, which opened Wednesday and runs until January 23. “This isn’t an exhibit, it’s a research project in the form of an exhibit,” he

The art of folding paper and fabric goes back centuries — the first recorded use of folded napkins in Europe was in 1529 — and did not originate in Asia as commonly believed. But this tradition has all but disappeared. “I am very happy that we can spread this knowledge here, because it has actually been completely lost: Mr Sallas has revived it,” noted Barta. There are eight folding techniques — including fans, rolls and lilies — which Sallas used as keys to decode the historic works.

Japan rapid scanning system can digitize book in one minute Agence France Presse
TOKYO – Japanese researchers said Friday they had developed technology to scan a book as fast as a person can flip through it. A prototype ultra-speed scanner capable of digitising a book in one minute will be built within two years, said the chief researcher of the team at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. The “book-flipping scanning” system works with a camera that can take up to 500 photographs per second, enabling it to record about 170 book pages in 60 seconds as a person thumbs through them. The system adjusts for the distortion caused by the curvature of the moving pages by measuring their three-dimensional forms using infra-red beams, so that the images can be electronically “flattened” to look like the original. “We believe this is the world’s fastest (scanning) system as far as the
technologies already published are concerned,” saidYoshihiro Watanabe, who leads the research team. “We are considering using robots to turn the pages automatically and more neatly,” he told AFP by telephone. The university researchers teamed up with Japan’s Dai Nippon Printing this month to put the technology to practical use, with the aim of building a prototype scanner within two years. Japanese printing firms are diversifying into e-books, which can be read using handheld devices such as Apple’s iPad tablet computer or Amazon’s Kindle. Watanabe said the technology to rapidly capture 3-D images of fastmoving objects could be used in a variety of applications from robotics to industrial and automotive design. The technology could be used for quality control of industrial products, he said. “You would just scan products that come out of manufacturing lines,” he added.

Study: Flamboyant male dancing attracts women best Associated France Presse
LONDON – John Travolta was onto something. Women are most attracted to male dancers who have big, flamboyant moves similar to the actor’s trademark style, British scientists say in a new study. Kris McCarty and colleagues at Northumbria University and the University of Gottingen in Germany asked 19 men aged 18 to 35 who were not professional dancers to dance in a laboratory for one minute to a basic drum rhythm. They filmed the men’s movements with a dozen cameras, and then turned those movements into computer-generated avatars so the study could focus on moves, not appearances. Scientists then showed the dancing avatars to 37 women, who rated their skills on a scale of 1 to 7. According to the women, the best dancers were those who had a wide range of dance moves and focused on the head, neck and torso. The research was published this week in the journal, Biology Letters, a publication of Britain’s Royal Society. It was paid for by Northumbria University.

“In principle, it is possible to break down the motion patterns that are informative and attractive to women,” said Rufus Johnstone, a reader in the evolution of animal behavior at Cambridge University. He was not connected to the research. Johnstone said there were similarities between animal mating rituals and what happens in modern dance clubs. “There are lots of cues females use when choosing a mate, like a peacock puffing out its tail,” he said. “Dancing for humans could signal whether a male is fit because it requires the expenditure of a lot of energy.” Nick Neave, an evolutionary psychologist at Northumbria University and one of the study’s co-authors, said women may subconsciously judge how fit a man is by the fluidity of his dancing. He said their research was likely subjective and different cultures would have different measures for what constitutes good dancing. Neave advised bad dancers to improve their core body moves. “The movements around the head, neck and trunk were the most important,” he said. “The good dancers had lots of different movements and used them with flair and creativity.” Johnstone said men who are bad dancers shouldn’t despair. “Among animals, courtship rituals are very important when there are very obvious physical displays,” he said. “In humans, I suspect it is much more complicated and may come down to more than whether or not a man is a good dancer.”

Two goals from Michael Essien and a Salomon Kalou strike helped the Blues to a 3-1 win over West Ham at Upton Park as Carlo Ancelotti’s men preserved their two-point lead at the top of the table. Ancelotti played down his team’s flying start to the season, which has seen them open up an early four-point lead over perennial title rivals Manchester United. “It means nothing,” Ancelotti said. “We’ve started better than Manchester United, but it will be a long race. I said last year that the race is only decided at the end of the season. I will say the same this year.” Manchester United missed the chance to keep the pressure on Chelsea after Everton scored twice in stoppage time to scramble a 3-3 draw against Sir Alex Ferguson’s men in Saturday’s early game at Goodison Park. United had appeared to be cruising to victory after goals from Darren Fletcher, Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov had cancelled out Steven Pienaar’s first half opener. However a late header from Tim Cahill and shot from Mikel Arteta gave Everton an improbable share of the points to leave United four points behind Chelsea — and Ferguson fuming. “Football can do that to you,” Ferguson said. “In a game of a completely comfortable position we’ve thrown it away - simple as that. MADRID - Star-studded champions Barcelona slumped to an embarrassing 2-0 home defeat at the hands of minnows Hercules on Saturday while Jose Mourinho savoured his first win in charge of Real Madrid. Paraguayan forward Nelson Haedo Valdez, signed from Borussia Dortmund, had a day to treasure scoring his first Hercules goal on 26 minutes and then another on 58 minutes as Barcelona crashed to a shock defeat against a side who have returned to the top flight after a 13-year absence. Barcelona went the whole season unbeaten at home in the last campaign and this was their first home defeat in the league since May 23, 2009 when they lost to Osasuna having already won the title. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola, who must pick his side up for Tuesday’s Champions League opener against Panathinaikos at Camp Nou, refused to make excuses for the Hercules setback. “There have always been international breaks and we didn’t fail to win because of that,” said Guardiola. “I see how the players work every day and I don’t have any doubts about this team.” Guardiola handed a league debut to Argentina Javier Mascherano, his 22-million-euro signing from Liverpool, and rested Spanish World Cup winners Xavi, Sergi Busquets and Pedro Rodriguez. Despite Barcelona dominating proceedings it was underdogs Hercules who struck first with a well-worked set-piece. An equaliser looked on the cards but close to the hour mark Tiago Gomes did well down right and found Valdez who fired into the top corner for a second Hercules goal. Real boss Mourinho had Portuguese compatriot Ricardo Carvalho to thank for scoring the decisive goal in the 1-0 win over Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 32-year-old Carvalho scored his first goal in Madrid colours on 48 minutes to ensure a winning home debut for Mourinho following a disappointing 0-0 draw at Real Mallorca on the opening day of the campaign. Carvalho, who has played for Mourinho at FC Porto, Chelsea and now Real, had a simple tap-in for the winning goal after being set-up by Cristiano Ronaldo. “The Barcelona defeat is a surprise but it is part of football and the important thing was that we won,” said Ronaldo. “We didn’t play fantastically well but at this stage winning is the crucial thing.” The victory took Real a point above champions Barcelona. Mourinho made four changes to the starting line-up against Mallorca handing first league starts to German internationals Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira. Ronaldo had the first real opening of the match on 20 minutes latching on to a pass from the lively Ozil but his low shot was well saved. A flat goalless first half saw jeers at the halftime whistle from the unhappy home fans. However, three minutes after the break, Real gave Mourinho his first goal as coach. Karim Benzema crossed for Ronaldo who looked certain to score but goalkeeper Ricardo blocked well. Ronaldo reacted quickly, however, to poke the ball to Carvalho for an easy tap-in. The goal repaid the faith from Mourinho who signed Carvalho for Chelsea in 2004 before recruiting him for Madrid this summer for eight million euros.

Queen Kim defends US Open title Agence France Presse
NEW YORK - Kim Clijsters defended her US Open title on Saturday by crushing the challenge of a shell-shocked Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-1 in just 59 minutes, the fastest final since timing records were first kept. It was a blowout of a championship match with Clijsters clamping a stranglehold on the game from the first exchanges and never allowing the less-experienced Russian a chance to claw her way back into it. The popular Belgian second seed clinched her third Grand Slam title in style when she whacked another forehand winner past a bewildered Zvonareva. It was the 15th straight-set US Open women singles final in a row dating back to Steffi Graf’s threeset win over Monica Seles in 1995 and at 59 minutes the quickest since timings were first kept in 1980. There has not been a more lop-sided US Open final since Maria Bueno of Brazil defeated Carole Caldwell Graebner of the United States 6-1, 6-0 in 1964. “A little bit of experience definitely helps,” she said. “It’s tough (for Zvonareva), but it took me six or seven finals until I finally got one.” A distraught-looking Zvonareva said simply: “Kim just played tremendously well and she deserved to win.” In a repeat showing of last year, Clijsters was joined on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court after the prize-award ceremony by two-anda-half year-old daughter Jada and basketball-playing husband Brian Lynch. The 27-year-old Clijsters was playing in her third US Open final,
having won the title in 2005 and last year when she stepped out of a twoyear retirement, during which she gave birth to Jada, to become the first wildcard to win a Grand Slam title. Her tough three-sets win over Venus Williams in the second of Friday’ssemi-finals was her 20th straight win at Flushing Meadows spread over five years. Zvonareva, a year younger at 26, reached her first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in July, losing in straight sets to Serena Williams, after proving that she could control her volatile temperament over the course of a Grand Slam tournament fortnight. She reached Saturday’s final without losing a set and with a huge straight-set win over top seed and last year ’s runner-up Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the semifinals. The two finalists had played each other seven times, with Clijsters leading the series 5-2, but it was Zonareva who had won their last two encounters, including a three-set victory in the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Games went with serve until 3-2 for Clijsters when a Zvonareva
double fault and two unforced errors set up a break point for the Belgian which she took when the Russian hit a forehand marginally long. Zvonareva tested Clijsters with some big-hitting down both flanks in the next game, but the second seed more than held her ground and her serve to lead 5-2. The defending champion then piled on the pressure to break Zvonareva to love in the following game for a one-set lead. Clijster won the first 10 points of the second set to jump out into a 3-0 lead with Zvonareva losing her cool and smashing her racquet in abject frustration. Zvonareva finally broke a run of nine games in a row against her to get to 3-1, but she just could not live with the relentless pressure that Clijsters was applying with each rally. The Russian did manage one break point in the following game, but Clijsters blasted that out of the way to take a 4-1 ahead. A double fault from Zvonareva set up another break point which she saved with a timely ace, but Clijsters then hit a booming forehand winner and a second double fault from the Russian made it mission impossible for her.

Having started out by using his superior reach to keep Peter at bay, Klitschko landed a strong left-right combination in the second which rocked the Nigerian early on. The opening rounds were marred by plenty of holding as Peter struggled against Klitschko’s obvious reach and height advantage. The Ukrainian champion seemed willing to wear down Peter and neither fighter landed any punches of significance. Klitschko was put down three times when the pair last met in Atlantic City in September 2005 in an IBF eliminator when the 34-yearold survived the onslaught to earn
a unanimous decision over 12 rounds. There was no such drama this time as the challenger took a more conservative approach and Peter resorted to holding tactics, especially in the later rounds. Peter was labouring by the end of the sixth round, but managed to catch the champion with a good right hook. Klitschko stepped up the pace in the seventh and looked for the knock-out he had promised in the fight build up. Peter called a break in the fight early in the round when he took the 10 seconds allowed to re-tape his gloves, but Klitschko wasted no time to keep up the pressure on the challenge with a series of telling punches. By the eighth, Peter’s face was showing signs of the punishment Klitschko was dishing out and his left eye was starting to close as the referee Robert Byrd kept warning him for holding. In the tenth, Klitschko finally broke free of Peter’s holds to land the punches which left the Nigerian flat out on the canvas before being helped to his feet. With 27 knock-outs in 34 wins, Peter was WBC heavyweight champion from 2006 to 2008, but this was the fourth defeat of his career.

Ogier clinches victory in Japan Japan - Sebastien Ogier clinched his second World Rally Championship victory and his first in the works Citroen team by overcoming Petter Solberg in Japan. Citroen privateer Solberg had led the majority of the event and looked set to take a stunning win, the first for an independent entry for at least 16 years, until a broken damper cost him ground on the final loop of stages this afternoon. He held on to second, but could not prevent Ogier pulling out a 15.7second lead and claiming the victory, despite the Frenchman having never contested this event before. “It’s amazing, I’m really, really happy,” said Ogier. “Arriving here I said ‘okay, it will be a difficult rally for me - I don’t like this kind of stage, it’s very rough and it’s my first time.’ But immediately we found a good feeling and a good rhythm, and now we have won, so it’s perfect.” Solberg’s participation in the rally had initially been in doubt due to illness, but once the full-length stages began on Friday he shrugged off his fever and controlled the event. He briefly lost the lead when he was given a 10s penalty for jumping a stage start on Saturday afternoon, before moving back to the front as others used slowing tactics to avoid running first on the road today. The damper problem meant
he was never able to demonstrate if he would have been able to hold off Ogier despite his road position. “Obviously I never thought we would go so well after the flu and the fever and everything - I felt terrible at the start of the rally,” said Solberg. “But the car worked really well and I really had a good feeling for everything. Unfortunately we had this problem with the car. But I’m really happy.” Both works Fords had also been in the thick of the battle for victory during a thrilling weekend, but both were denied by mechanical problems. Jari-Matti Latvala recovered from a Saturday afternoon driveshaft breakage - which happened just after Solberg’s penalty had given him the lead - to chase down Dani Sordo and reclaim third from the Citroen Junior driver with four stages to go. Mikko Hirvonen fared worse, though. He started today second behind Solberg and poised to challenge for the lead, only for a differential prob-
lem to strike. With no service today, Hirvonen had to nurse his car through the entire leg, and tumbled to sixth. He finished behind championship leader Sebastien Loeb, who was out of sorts all weekend and finished 53.3s behind team-mate Ogier in fifth. But with Ogier still 43 points adrift in the standings, Loeb looks near certain to clinch his seventh consecutive WRC title on home turf in France at the start of October. Henning Solberg (Stobart Ford) and Federico Villagra (Munchi’s Ford) completed the WRC runners, with Ford’s Khalid Al Qassimi, Stobart’s Matthew Wilson and Citroen Junior’s Kimi Raikkonen crashing out on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. Jari Ketomaa led the S2000 contest from the outset and finished ninth overall ahead of class rival Martin Prokop. Alonso admits podium is minimum requirement FERNANDO Alonso has conceded that, despite being allowed to keep his controversial victory in the German Grand Prix, he needs to finish in the top three at Monza to keep his title ambition on track. The Spaniard, currently 41 points off top spot, will start from the best possible position for Ferrari’s home grand prix, having claimed the Scuderia’s first pole since Interlagos 2008, and is confident that the F10 will be as competitive in the race as it proved in qualifying. Team-mate Felipe Massa underlined the car’s potential by taking third on the grid in front of the tifosi, sandwiching McLaren’s Jenson Button, who needs a good result as much as Alonso. “I think we need a podium minimum to remain in the fight,” Alonso confirmed, “There is not a big pressure, a big stress, about winning the race or winning the next few races but, at the same time, we know we cannot afford another DNF or another bad result. be consistent and try to be on the podium minimum. “If we can win the race, it would be great, but what we need is consistency, something that we didn’t have so far in the championship. For that reason, we are not fighting now for first position, but tomorrow we have a great chance to get a strong result and we will see where our opponents finish. “I think, this season, one of our strongest points has been race pace, not so much qualifying, so I don’t have too many worries about the pace [on Sunday]. We just need to do a good start, a consistent pace in the first stint and also when we fit the prime tyres. We know how demanding Monza is on the mechanical side of the car we saw some problems on the car yesterday for many teams, and we saw another problem this morning for two or three teams - so it is not an easy race to finish. Let’s try to have everything under control [and see] if we can and try to finish the race with the maximum points possible. Obviously, we’re in the best position possible to avoid any risk at the start, but you never know.” With drivers within the same team taking different approaches to qualifying and the race - notably Button and Lewis Hamilton at McLaren - the outcome of their strategies could prove to be the key to the result, but Alonso is optimistic that Ferrari will be more competitive that it proved at Spa. “Yesterday, I think the maximum number of laps everybody did was around eight or nine so, after nine laps, nobody knows how the tyres will behave for anyone,” he noted, “We just need to remain calm and do our race and see what happens in the end. “Obviously, Spa was a disappointment. We were not too quick there, so part of the disappointment of the bad result were concerns about our pace, about our level of competitiveness. Now though I think we are much more focused and much more confident in our latest developments on the car.
