Robin Williams dead at 63

SAN FRANCISCO — Robin Williams, a brilliant shapeshifter who could channel his frenetic energy into delightful comic characters like “Mrs. Doubtfire” or harness it into richly nuanced work like his Oscarwinning turn in “Good Will Hunting,” died Monday in an apparent suicide. He was 63. Williams was pronounced dead at his San Francisco Bay Area home Monday, according to the sheriff’s office in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The sheriff’s office said the preliminary investigation shows the cause of death to be a suicide due to asphyxia. The Marin County coroner’s office said Williams was last seen alive at home at about 10 p.m. Sunday. An emergency call from his house in Tiburon was placed to the Sheriff’s Department shortly before noon Monday. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” said Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider. “On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is
our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.” In addition to his wife, Williams is survived by his three children: daughter Zelda, 25; and sons Zachary, 31, and Cody, 19. Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative. Just last month, he announced he was returning to a 12-step treatment program he said he needed after 18 months of nonstop work. He had sought treatment in 2006 after a relapse following 20 years of sobriety. From his breakthrough in the late 1970s as the alien in the hit TV comedy “Mork & Mindy” through his standup comedy act and such films as “Good Morning, Vietnam,” the short, barrelchested Williams ranted and shouted as if just sprung from solitary confinement.
Loud, fast and manic, he parodied everyone from John Wayne to Keith Richards, impersonating a Russian immigrant as easily as a pack of Nazi attack dogs. He was a riot in drag in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” or as a cartoon genie in “Aladdin.” He won his Academy Award in a rare dramatic role, as an empathetic therapist in the 1997 film “Good Will Hunting.” As word of his death spread, tributes from inside and outside the entertainment industry poured in. “Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets,” President Barack Obama said in a statement.

NEW YORK — Emma Stone, who last year abandoned appearing in the Broadway revival of “Cabaret,” might still be in need of fishnets and a bowler hat. Roundabout Theatre Company said Monday that Stone is in negotiations to make her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles. She would take over from Michelle Williams, who has extended her run as Bowles opposite Alan Cumming through Nov. 9. Set in 1931 Berlin, “Cabaret” centers on the world of the indulgent Kit Kat Klub as it becomes intertwined with the world outside, which gets more precarious as Nazis take over. The songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb include “Willkommen” and “Tomorrow Belongs to Me.” Williams stepped into the role, once played by Liza Minnelli, when Stone had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.

The medical team consists of doctors, nurses, and ambulances, head of the Bali’s health office Dr. Ketut Suarjaya noted. “Every passenger arriving from
areas exposed to Ebola cases will be examined. If symptoms of the disease are noted, the passengers will be immediately checked by the medics. The suspects will be
isolated in rooms that have been prepared at the Sanglah general hospital, he explained. According to him, the preparedness system is not only for Ebola virus, which is currently endemic in Africa. It has been running since when bird flu, SARS, and MersCoV outbreaks had been reported. So far, no Ebola suspect has been reported in Indonesia. “The Ministry of Health has
urged to raise awareness, as currently Ebola is not only endemic in Africa, but is also found in Arabian countries. Therefore, it is necessary to increase awareness to the hajj and umroh pilgrims,” Dr. Suarjaya added. The health office has also informed people about the disease, in addition to keeping the surveillance officers on the field at all entrances of Bali, including ports.
“Not everyone who enters Bali via airport will be examined. The scanning will be done on only those arrive who from the areas prone to Ebola,” he noted. Suarjaya added that the scanner that has been installed at Ngurah Rai Airport can detect body temperature of a particular virus suffered by a person. The infection is usually indicated by an increase in body temperature.

Denpasar builds six drainages to overcome flood Bali Post
DENPASAR - Ahead of rainy season the Denpasar Public Works has prepared six new drainages to cope with floods and puddles. The making of drainage will be fully accomplished no later than August 18. A total of six drainages will serve to accommodate the overflow of rainwater. The total contract value of the drainage making approximately reached IDR 5.7 billion taken from regional budget 2014. The Irrigation Division Head of the Denpasar Public Works, I Gusti Ngurah Putra Sanjaya, said there were still 14 points of flood or puddle in the city of Denpasar. According to him, a total of 15 flooding points could have been addressed since 2010. To cope with the floods this year, the Public Works had made six new drainage projects remaining in progress. The drainages made were located on Jalan Pucuk Kesiman Kertalangu worth IDR 618 million, Jalan Subak Dalem (IDR 1.082 billion), Jalan Tukad Banyusari Panjer (IDR 1.170 billion), Pemecutan Kelod village (IDR 1.404 billion), Penatih village (IDR 853 million) and Peguyangan Kangin (IDR 571 million). “Some projects have completed such as the drainage on Jalan Pucuk Kesiman Kertalangu, Jalan Tukad Banyusari Panjer and Jalan Subak Dalem. Meanwhile, the remaining projects are still in the process. No
later than August 18, they will be completed in accordance with the contract,” he said, Monday (Aug 11). He said the puddles and floods in Denpasar would happen during rainy season from September to late December. To that end, the drainage work was targeted until mid-August only. In addition to creating new drainage, the Public Works also performed dredging in some rivers to optimize the capacity of the water when it rained. In addition, he also explained, the floods and puddles during rainy season could be caused by many factors such as the large amount of rubbish clogging the drain and the incapability of drain to accommodate rainwater. “Currently, rainwater catchment areas continue to decline so that the entire rainwater runs immediately to drainage. If drainage cannot accommodate the volume of rainwater, floods and puddles will arise,” he explained. (dwa)
TABANAN - Two farmers from Tabanan having won a national achievement were invited to the presidential palace in Jakarta to attend a series of the 69th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. They are I Nyoman Suweca, 52, who won first prize in the assessment of the excellent farmers in Bali Province in 2014 and Hadiman Marzuki, 45, who won the first place in the assessment of the excellent Independent Agricultural Extension Officer of Bali Province in 2014. Aside from the two categories, two other categories that could also won achievement including Sari Mekar Joint Farmer Group (Gapoktan) of Pangkung Tibah, Kediri subdistrict becoming the third best in the assessment of Bali Joint Farmer Group 2014 and in the assessment of civil servant Agricultural Extension Officer achievement of Bali Province, namely Baiq Winarni, 49, from Tajen Sedahan hamlet, Tajen village, Penebel subdistrict, Tabanan. Nyoman Suweca explained that he managed to attain the best in terms of developing horticulture (vegetables and fruit) and floriculture (any type of flower), including the development of organic fertilizer because farming should be equipped with a clear administration, management and technology that could be applied to other farmers. Other than the administration, he explained the assessment team also focused on the cultivation of at least 6 commodities, business analysis for three consecutive years, the development of technology and self-development by attending various types of agricultural training. “To be the best, our farming
should also be supported by a good administration and management,” he said. The success achieved by farmers in Tabanan was inseparable from the role of government. According to the Chief of Counseling Executive Agency (Bappeluh) of Tabanan, the achievement was the success of all parties. As direction of the leadership, four things needing to be considered in the work included working hard, working smartly, working completely and working sincerely. “If the four aspects could be implemented, I have confident that farmers in Tabanan can present the best results,” he made sure. The success got highest appreciation from the Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti. According to her, the success was inseparable from the cooperation of all parties. Moreover, all the government programs showed the alignment to farmers such as the food development movement, provision of healthy organic rice to civil servants in the circle of Tabanan government and the establishment of rural enterprises. This enterprise would purchase the products of farmers. “All the agricultural programs based on vivacity and sincerity is intended for the interest of farmers and alignments to farmers. Hopefully, it can enhance the famers’ welfare,” she said. Regent Eka also hoped the excellent farmers to help provide guidance and knowledge for other farmers. DENPASAR - So far, no single treatment technique can completely cure HIV patients. Although there has been antiretroviral (ARV), the treatment can only suppress the amount of virus so the symptoms of HIV do not show up and the life quality of HIV patients can be maintained. If HIV patients stop the antiretroviral therapy, the number of virus will increase so that it results in disease and disrupts the patient’s quality of life and ends at death. The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, explained on Monday (Aug 11) that by considering the increase in the HIV cases, the WHO included HIV vaccine development program as one of the disease prevention programs. “HIV vaccine has been developed by the WHO for 10 years. Currently, it is under research and testing phase,” said Suarjaya. He continued that based on the exposure of Prof. Sharon Lewin, the Department Head of the Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital and Monash University, through the research conducted was found a few individuals or humans making super antibodies that could recognize a large number of viruses. “Some of these antibodies have been recognized but are only tested in laboratory,” said
Suarjaya. Although the finding was still far from an effective vaccine, it had been a hope and new invention for the development of HIV vaccine. While waiting for the making of HIV vaccine, added Suarjaya, early administration of antiretroviral drugs to HIV patients posed an option at this time. “They are proved to have reduced the amount of virus itself as well as minimize the transmission up to 96 percent,” said Suarjaya. Based on the data, the total amount of patients with HIV/AIDS in Bali currently reached 9,477 cases consisting of 5,022 cases in HIV phase and 4,455 cases in AIDS phase. The phase of HIV meant that patients had not showed symptoms of illness and looked healthy, while the AIDS phase meant to have showed symptoms due to virus attack beginning to appear. The diseases often appearing in the phase of AIDS were tuberculosis, diarrhea and fungus in the mouth. The number of death due to HIV in Bali had recorded to reach 545 since 1987. The highest risk factor was still held by heterosexual contact reaching 7,840 cases. In terms of age range, the age of 20-29 years was the most affected by HIV/AIDS reaching 3,646 people, while the age range of 30-39 years reached 3,433 people. (kmb24)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WASHINGTON — In what may be the birth of cheap, easy-to-make robots, researchers have created complex machines that transform themselves from little more than a sheet of paper and plastic into walking automatons. Borrowing from the ancient Japanese art of origami, children’s toys and even a touch of the “Transformers” movies, scientists and engineers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created self-assembling, paper robots. They are made out of hobby shop materials that cost about $100. After the installation of tiny batteries and motors, a paper robot rises on four stumpy legs and starts scooting in a herky-jerky manner. It transforms from flat paper to jitterbugging four-legged robot in just four minutes. This small lightweight type of robot could explore outer space and other dangerous environments, and get into cramped places for search-and-rescue missions, researchers said. But that’s just the start of what may be a longenvisioned robotic revolution. This eventually could be as technol-
ogy-changing as the three-dimensional printer, said experts unconnected with the study and Harvard robotics researcher Sam Felton, who is lead author of the paper published Thursday in the journal Science. Felton and study co-author Daniela Rus of MIT say they see a time when someone who wants a dog-walking robot would go to a store that has specialized equipment to make the device — “some sort of robo-Kinkos,” Felton said. Kinkos is an office supply store chain. And eventually the technology could produce more complex machines. “In principle it will be possible to say, ‘I want a robot to play chess with me,’ and generate a machine that has the computational abilities to play chess with you,” Rus said. Today it costs a lot of money to build
a robot, but this method is fast, cheap and specialized, Rus said. “This is a simple, flexible and rapid design process and a step toward the dream of realizing the vision of 24-hour robot manufacturing,” Rus said. These robots aren’t quite Transformers of movie and cartoon fame. Once they assemble themselves automatically with heat-activated hinges that allow the folding, there are no more changes, Rus and Felton said. The robots themselves start out a bit smaller than a normal sheet of paper. Off-the-shelf batteries and motors are embedded at a cost of about $80. Altogether, the early machines researchers made, along with the equipment to build them, cost less than $1,000 apiece, Felton said. The robots, which the researchers did not name, are about 6 inches (15 centimeters) long, 6 inches (15 centimeters) wide, and about 2 inches (5 centimeters) tall. They weigh less than 3 ounces. (85 grams) They move about 2 inches (5 centimeters) per second. But they can be made bigger or smaller, with some limitations, Felton said.
WASHINGTON - The social news group BuzzFeed unveiled a major new expansion plan, using a fresh infusion of $50 million in venture capital. Andreessen Horowitz, the big Silicon Valley venture group, announced late Sunday it is investing $50 million in BuzzFeed and that one of its partners, Chris Dixon, will be joining the company’s board. Details of the investment were not disclosed. But the New York Times reported that the deal values BuzzFeed at some $850 million. BuzzFeed meanwhile said it would expand in several ways. Its video division will expand and become “BuzzFeed Motion Pictures,” which will “focus on all moving images from a GIF to feature film and everything in between,” according to a statement Monday. BuzzFeed’s editorial team will expand to cover more breaking news, and will double the number of foreign correspondents. BuzzFeed said it will also launch a test kitchen and food lab in Manhattan “to create more original lifestyle content.” BuzzFeed International will create news sites to India, Germany, Mexico and Japan this year, in addition to the French, Spanish and Portuguese editions announced last year. “We created BuzzFeed because people still want to be informed, entertained, and inspired but the way they consume media has dramatically shifted,” said BuzzFeed founder and chief executive Jonah Peretti. “Today we think the time is perfect to grow our company, build our brand and greatly increase the content we are producing so we can be the number one digital media brand. The investment from Andreessen Horowitz will allow us to double down on our company’s mission by creating a new organization and expand rapidly in all areas.” Dixon said on his blog that BuzzFeed is growing into a more serious news organization following its debut focusing on offbeat and oddball coverage. “BuzzFeed started out focusing on lightweight content like memes, lists, funny photos, etc,” Dixon said. “This led some industry observers to dismiss BuzzFeed as a ‘toy.’ The company has since moved steadily up market, following the typical path of disruptive technologies. It now has an editorial staff of over 200 people covering a wide range of topics -- politics, sports, business, entertainment, travel, etc -- and plans to invest significantly more in high-quality content in the coming years.” Dixon added that BuzzFeed “is a media company in the same sense that Tesla is a car company, Uber is a taxi company, or Netflix is a streaming movie company... The most interesting tech companies aren’t trying to sell software to other companies. They are trying to reshape industries from top to bottom.” Andreessen Horowitz’s Marc Andreessen also touted the merits of BuzzFeed in a series of tweets. “BuzzFeed has technology at its core. Its 100+ person tech team has created world-class systems... Engineers are first class citizens,” he wrote. “And then on top of its technology core, BuzzFeed’s reporting team is now routinely committing breathtaking investigative journalism...” According to Dixon, “BuzzFeed now reaches over 150 million people per month, is consistently profitable, and will generate triple digit millions in revenues this year.”

DENPASAR - Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika has urged security agencies in the region to be proactive and take early-detection efforts with regard to preventing entry of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ideology and network. “Security agencies have intelligence, community-based security, and guidance units, which we hope will remain proactive to conduct early detection. Early detention and early prevention are the most important efforts,” he reported after attending a plenary session of the regional legislative assembly on revised 2014 regional budget on Monday. He expressed hope that the traditional village council as well as interfaith relations forum and interethnic associations in the island will act and move to prevent entry of ISIS ideology and network. Mangku Pastika, who is also a former Bali regional police command chief, stated that he had already conducted coordination with other parties concerned and will conduct periodical meetings with regard to increasing alertness. The ruling Democrat Party faction in the legislative assembly, meanwhile, had called on the local governments, law enforcement elements, and community members to take preventive and proactive measures to curb any movement aimed at supporting ISIS ideology. “All parties must take anticipa-
tory measures and be alert toward ISIS ideology and must not let it change the Unitary State of Indonesia (NKRI), which has so far been safeguarded by the country’s founders based on the 1945 Constitution,” Democrat Party faction member I Wayan Adnyana said reading the party’s stance at the meeting. KUTA - The Ministry of Youth and Sport is supporting the administration of Bali province to construct a world class stadium located in Cengkiling, Pecatu village, Badung district, Bali, the minister recently stated. It is expected that with the construction of the stadium, Indonesia will be able to host the World Cup 2022, Roy Suryo remarked at the closing ceremony of the ASEAN Forum and International Conference on Sport Science and Technology (AFICSST) here on Sunday (August 10). “The opportunity for Indonesia to host the World Cup 2022 is widely open. Moreover, Bali will build an international level stadium,” the minister remarked. According to him, Bali is one of the five provinces that is expected to meet the FIFA’s (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) requirements to be the venue for the event. “I propose Indonesia to be a part of the World Cup if Qatar steps down to be the host,” Roy Suryo stated, adding that it likely that Indonesia will host the event in 2022. However, Indonesia cannot single-handedly host FIFA as it requires 20 world class stadiums. “We can partner with Malaysia, Thailand, and other countries,” Suryo added. He explained that Indonesia will only be able to facilitate five international level stadiums, which will be located in Jakarta, West Java, and Palembang (South Sumatra), including Bali, if the administration confirms to construct the stadium. In addition, the ministry also expects Indonesia to host the Formula One World Championship, the highest class of single-seat auto racing. The ministry has conducted studies and has visited circuits in Australia and Sepang, Malaysia. “Let us hope and pray that this expectation can be achieved, so that Indonesia is accepted in the international forum to host the World Cup,” Roy Suryo added.

Murderers of a foreigner charged with death penalty Bali Post
DENPASAR - Do you still remember the sadistic murder inflicting a foreigner named Paul Robb Latourell on Jalan Banteng, Denpasar? Two culprits alleged to have committed the murder, Marsianus Simarto, 30, and Multazam Aulawi, 19, started to be put on trial at the Denpasar District Court, Monday (Aug 11). One of the defendants without accompanied by legal counsel, Marsianus Simarto, was forced to be looked for a lawyer by the state through the panel of judges chaired by AA Ketut Anom Wirakanta because the penalty charged was at least 15 years. The appointed lawyers were Eddy Hartaka and Leonardo Agustino. Meanwhile, Multazam had been accompanied by his lawyer, so the trial could be continued by the reading of the agenda of the charges by the prosecutor Gusti Nyoman Widana.
As mentioned in the indictment, in essence, the role of both defendants when killing the victim sadistically was the same. However, the prosecutor added a chapter to defendant Marsianus Simarto, namely ensnared the defendant with Article 480 paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code on the fencing of swags. Meanwhile, in the main charges, they were ensnared with Article 340 of the Criminal Code, namely planned murder that could be maximally charged with death penalty.
In the indictment was explained that Marsianus around 02:00 a.m. on Sunday (Feb 16) at Jalan Banteng No.2E, Denpasar deliberately planned to murder Paul Robb Latourell. Indeed, Marsianus was often asked Multazam (another defendant) to escort him to the victim’s house. The indictment stated if Marsianus frequently had sex with the victim from America, with a financial reward. More than that, since Marsianus often borrowed the cellular phone of Multazam to send SMS to the victim, ultimately the victim was also familiar with Multazam. More seriously, as the indictment read before the court, Multazam also had sexual intercourse with the victim (Feb 16) in exchange for IDR 200,000. Before having intercourse, both defendants purchased
a knife at IDR 25,000 at Kreneng Market. Before turning to the victim’s house, the two defendants sat relaxingly at Puputan Badung Square to wait for the right time. The next day (on the incident), around 00:30 a.m., the defendants rushed to the victim’s house. But upon arrival, the victim said if he was with someone, so that both defendants were back out to kill time. Not long after, the victim sent an SMS which essentially mentioned that he was alone at home. Both defendants returned to Jalan Banteng. There, Marsianus Simarto came in first and had homosexual intercourse. After that, they enjoyed liquor. Few minutes later, Multazam Aulawi came in and had similar intercourse. Allegedly, the victim had fear and pain, so it resulted in mismatch and caused the
victim to get angry and hit the head of defendant Multazam. Since the blow was made again and again, the defendant finally got angry as well and eventually stabbed the victim repeatedly with the knife purchased earlier at Kreneng Market, Denpasar. Victim’s blood was spurting as he was stabbed for several times. It made the defendant crazy, while the victim gave resistance and tried to snatch the defendant’s knife. Unfortunately, as losing a lot of blood on the mattress the victim was getting weaker and eventually died. Against the indictment, the judges questioned whether the defendant would file an objection or defense. The defendant through his lawyer said that he would not file defense, so the prosecutor asked to present witnesses at the hearing next week. (asa)

AMLAPURA - During this dry season, cattle farmers in barren regions such as Kubu and Abang subdistrict are forced to feed their cattle with hay moistened with saline solution. It was mentioned by a number of cattle breeders in the area of Amed, Abang subdistrict and Batu Dawa, Kubu, Monday (Aug 11). A breeder at Amed, Gede Tam, said the hay or dried grass had no vitamins or nutritional content for livestock. However, it should be given to make them survive during dry season. “Hay or our local people in Karangasem call it ‘crackers’ has no vitamins, sir. It is just used to make them survive. Becoming thin is sure because we have no green fodders. Have a look at, the surrounding grass and fields have yellowed and dried up,” he said. Other than in Amed and Bunutan, as our field observation, the cattle breeders in Kubu had already stored hay since a few months earlier. Grasses or leaves and crops were deliberately cut and kept as much as possible next to cowshed or in a special hut. Such ‘crackers’ were also often stored on tree branches. “If I keep the hay next to my cowshed or on the ground, we worry if it will be burned by pranksters. So, I deliberately keep it on tree branches,” said a cattle breeder from Kubu, Wayan Sudati. Meanwhile, the Head of Karangasem Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Ketut Artama, said that local breeders at barren village fed their cattle with hay during dry season. Prior to giving the hay to cattle, the breeders ordinarily moistened it first with saline solution. He indeed recognized the nutritional content of hay was lower than fresh grass. Haiti police search for 329 escaped prisoners Associated Press
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — An intense search was underway Monday after 329 prisoners escaped from an overcrowded prison on the outskirts of the Haitian capital in an attack apparently aimed at freeing the son of a prominent businessman held on kidnapping charges. Authorities increased security along the border and appealed for help from officials in the neighboring Dominican Republic and in nearby Jamaica, fearing some of the men who escaped had already fled the country following the breakout. In the Dominican Republic, the government ordered extra troops to its porous border with Haiti and were searching for any of the escaped prisoners, Defense Minister Sigrido Pared said. Witnesses said about 15 gunmen in two SUVs showed up at the prison in Croix-des-Bouquets before noon on Sunday and opened fire on guards, wounding two. Haitian officials said the attack appeared to be timed to coincide with recreation time and prisoners began to riot as
the shooting started. The authorities are investigating whether there was cooperation from members of the Haitian police who guard the prison, Justice Minister Jean Renel Sanon said. The attack was apparently intended to free Clifford Brandt, a member of a wealthy family, who has been awaiting trial since 2012 for allegedly running a kidnapping ring in the capital. The government offered a reward equivalent to about $25,000 for information leading to Brandt’s capture. Police Chief Godson Orleus said 10 of the 329 prisoners have been recaptured. The prison held 899 prisoners at the time of the attack, about 130 over capacity.

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Kosovo police on Monday arrested at least 40 people in a major operation targeting Islamic radicals suspected of fighting alongside extremists in Iraq and Syria. Spokesman Baki Kelani said weapons, ammunition and explosives were seized as hundreds of police officers and special police units raided 60 locations across Kosovo, including makeshift mosques believed to have served as recruiting centers. The police operation is the largest ever against suspected Islamic radicals in Kosovo. Authorities have been on alert as a growing number of ethnic Albanians have joined militants in Syria and Iraq and appeared on social media in attempts to lure more followers. The thorny issue of religion has often brought conservative Muslims at loggerheads with secular Kosovars as the two groups struggle to set up a functioning country in the aftermath of the 1998-99 separatist war against Serbia. Police said the arrests Monday were the result of two years of surveillance and investigations and that some of the arrested are suspected of being involved in
terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State group, or Jabhat Al-Nusra. They estimated at least 200 Kosovars have joined the ranks of Islamic militants as volunteers and at least 16 have been killed in battles with Syrian and Iraqi authorities. Kosovo’s government welcomed Monday’s operation and warned it will fight religious extremists in Kosovo. “Kosovo will not be a safe haven for extremism,” President Atifete Jahjaga said. Most of the suspects come from central Kosovo’s Ferizaj municipality, which is also home to the U.S. military installation Camp Bondsteel, where some 700 American peacekeepers are stationed. Maj. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday urged the prime minister-designate, Haider al-Ibadi, to work quickly to form an inclusive government and said the U.S. is prepared to offer it significant additional aid in the fight against Islamic State militants. The power struggle in Baghdad comes as Iraq is battling militants from the alQaida breakaway group in the north and the west. Two weeks before Russia banned most food from the West, it placed a similar embargo on produce closer to home in Moldova, a small Eastern European country seeking deeper ties with the European Union. Farmers here in one of the poorest corners of Europe are already feeling the pain, with some deciding not to harvest some of their fruit and vegetables at all this season. Calmac’s predicament is one that farmers across Europe and beyond can expect to some degree after Russia expanded the circle of countries targeted by its food embargoes. “A weaker person than me would lose his mind, seeing how his work and investment are being lost,” said Calmac, a 60-year-old who has farmed for 26 years. “I have never had a situation like this.” In late July Russia banned foods from Moldova and Ukraine — both former Soviet republics that the Kremlin wants to keep in its sphere of influence — after they moved to deepen their political and economic ties with the EU. A ban on Polish fruits and vegetables soon followed as Warsaw called for sanctions against Moscow for its aggression in Ukraine. Last week Moscow took things further, banning most food imports from the West in retaliation for sanctions imposed as tensions mount over Ukraine. The consequences of this geopolitical tit-for-tat are particularly painful in Moldova because it is already one of Europe’s poorest countries. Fruit was its largest export, with 90 percent of its apples sent there before the ban. The lost revenue from apples alone is expected to reach $50 million, or three-quarters of a percent of GDP. YANGON — Authorities in Myanmar’s second-largest city of Mandalay have lifted a curfew imposed after attacks on minority Muslims left two people dead and injured 14 others. The rioting in early July was triggered by rumors that two Muslim men had raped a Buddhist woman. Mobs torched homes and shops, prompting authorities on July 3 to impose an overnight curfew in seven townships. The Home Ministry later said a man had falsely accused the two men of raping a woman due to a grudge against them. An order carried in state-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper on Tuesday said calm had been largely restored, allowing for its lifting. Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation, has been grappling since 2012 with sectarian violence that has left up to 300 people, most of them Muslims attacked by Buddhist extremists in the western Rakhine state.
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s president-elect Joko Widodo said his country was ready to act as an intermediary to calm rising tensions over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, according to an interview published Tuesday. The Jakarta governor, who won a resounding electoral victory last month, told Japan’s Asahi newspaper that he would work toward finding diplomatic -- not military -- solutions to the simmering conflicts. Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, putting it at odds with countries including the Philippines and Vietnam, and there have been several tense encounters in the area over recent months. “We’re hoping for diplomatic solutions and, if necessary, Indonesia stands ready to play an intermediary role,” Widodo said, according to the Asahi interview, which was published in Japanese.
“I refuse to accept a military solution,” he added. Indonesia does not have any disputes with China over the South China Sea, and has traditionally held a mediating role in rows over the waters. Widodo also said he would help speed up the drafting of a code of conduct between China and the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). His comments come as Beijing accused Washington of deliberately stoking tensions in the South China Sea, and rejected Washington’s proposal for a freeze on provocative actions in the region. The remarks by Foreign Minister Wang Yi came at an ASEAN Regional Forum at the weekend overshadowed by disputes in the strategically significant waters. ASEAN members have shown varying degrees of alarm to China’s growing assertiveness in the region. Tensions escalated after China positioned an oil rig in an area also claimed by Vietnam, with each country accusing the other of ramming its ships.
JAKARTA - The Jakarta Police is monitoring the cyber world to track the developments of the radical group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). “We are patrolling the cyber world to monitor the ISIS networks in Indonesia,” Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hilarius Duha, the Jakarta Police’s Cyber Crime sub-directorate head, stated on Tuesday. The monitoring was crucial to detect any spread of the ideology or teachings banned by the Indonesian government, he added. The results of cyber patrolling will be presented to the National Police for further study on ISIS, he stated. The Jakarta Police has also sent security officers and intelligence agents to detect the likely presence of ISIS members, he noted. A public campaign was also carried out to increase public awareness of the dangers of ISIS, he added. Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Dwi Priyatno recently urged the public to be vigilant because ISIS is a radical organization. Indonesian Police Chief General Sutarman recently reported that an Indonesian national who had called on Muslims to join ISIS in a video broadcast on YouTube was a fugitive terrorist. “The Indonesian police have been following the move to call on the people to join the organization (ISIS). We have identified the person whose initial is B. He is our fugitive,” he added. The Indonesian national who had appeared on an eight-minute-long video in the YouTube broadcast under the title “Join the Rank” had been on the police’s wanted list, he affirmed. Often for little money. “He would go to tracks that a lot of other drivers wouldn’t go to,” Chuck Miller, the race director and president for the Empire Super Sprints circuit, said Monday. “If we had co-sanctioned races with other organizations where we really weren’t giving points or anything, but it was a deal where you wanted to see how you stacked up against the other competition, the Wards were willing to go and do that and see where they were at.” Ward began racing go-karts in 1998 at age 4. In 2010, he moved on to sprint cars and was Empire Super Sprint racing rookie of the year in 2012. The 20-year-old raced mostly on dirt tracks a few hours from his home in Port Leyden, a village of 700 in northern New York. Ward was killed Saturday night about 140 miles away at a clay track in Canandaigua. NASCAR champion Tony Stewart was the big name in the field, racing with the young guys while he was in the area for a Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen the next day. Ward and Stewart tangled, and Ward hit the wall. Ward walked
on the track apparently to confront Stewart, and was struck when Stewart’s vehicle seemed to fishtail. On Monday, several cars were parked in front of the Ward home in Port Leyden. A police officer stood across the street, politely asking reporters not to park on the road’s shoulder. Helen McHale has lived across the street for 30 years and remembers hearing the noise when Ward raced go-carts. Kevin Ward Sr. runs a successful painting business, and locals thought his son might make it big in the racing world. “His dad goes to every race,” she said. “He’s a good kid, polite, big smile, and they’re a good family.” Stewart and Ward shared a love of racing sprint cars: high-powered, winged cars built for running on short oval or circular dirt and paved tracks. Drivers have to hit the gas to turn, not necessarily use the wheel. After the crash, Ward was standing to the right of Stewart’s familiar No. 14 car on the dimly lit track. According to video and witness accounts, Ward was struck by the right rear tire and hurtled through the air.

Authorities questioned the 43year-old Stewart once on Saturday night and went to Watkins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators don’t have any
evidence at this point to support criminal intent. Povero said Monday there were no plans “at this time” to talk to Stewart again. “At this time, there are no facts that exist that support any criminal
behavior or conduct, or that any probable cause of a criminal act, in this investigation,” he said. Povero said the autopsy was completed Monday and found Ward died of blunt force trauma.

Mercedes does not believe engines have become the dominant factor in Formula 1 car performance this season, despite the advantage it has enjoyed over Ferrari and Renault. The Mercedes factory team has won nine of the 11 grands prix held so far in 2014, while customer squad Williams has helped ensure nothing but a car powered by a Mercedes engine has qualified on pole this year. Mercedes-powered teams also occupy four of the top six spots in the constructors’ table, but Mercedes GP technical chief Paddy Lowe does not believe his marque’s dominance is a sign the new hybrid rules introduced for this season have made engines the fundamental factor in car performance. “These cars are about system performance, not individual elements,” Lowe told AUTOSPORT. “It’s about how you put it all together. It’s the power unit, the efficiency of the power unit, the aerodynamics, and the manner in which they’re all put together. “It’s the collective efficiency of that package from a power, aero and
suspension point of view, as well as a weight point of view. “Our car is very quick. There are other cars running that power unit that aren’t as quick, so it’s a whole system.” Lowe said he expected much of the power difference to Ferrari and Renault would have been down to short-term issues experienced by the other manufacturers, but reckoned constant improvements by his own team might have masked the gains made by its rivals. “A lot of the deficit has been on the power unit side, and you wonder how much of that is fundamental and how much is short-term issues they need to learn to manage,” Lowe added. “I would have expected more would have been short-term and been overcome. “It’s difficult to know because we’re pushing in so many different areas and you don’t know which areas they’re pushing in. “We’ve been concentrating on our own programme and we keep pushing hard to improve the car race by race - what turns out, turns out, but I’m happy we’re managing to maintain a good gap.”

But as the waning impact of English sides in Europe last season demonstrated, the Premier League’s allure remains under threat from Spain. Gareth Bale left Tottenham for Real Madrid last year, and the new season begins with Luis Suarez at Barcelona rather than Liverpool. Liverpool cashed in around $130 million for the Uruguay striker, who is banned from football until the end of October for biting an opponent at the World Cup in Brazil. But Liverpool is now without the player who led the club to a rapid return to the elite, and the Premier League marketing machine is without one of its most recognizable names. Replenishing the Liverpool squad with a trio of players from eighth-place Southampton at a cost of $80 million doesn’t seem the obvious way of turning last season’s second-place finish behind Manchester City into a first championship since 1990. The 27-year-old Suarez, whose 31 goals earned him the player of the year titles, has been replaced by 32-year-old Southampton striker Rickie Lambert, who played just three minutes for England at the World Cup. “(Suarez) left Liverpool after his time as a world-class talent,” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. “But we will move forward.” Manchester United seems more likely to make a big jump forward than Liverpool. Louis van Gaal has replaced David Moyes, who took over from Alex Ferguson as manager last season but wilted in the Old Trafford spotlight as the team fell from champions to seventh place. Moyes arrived a year ago without a trophy to his name, but Van Gaal already has an aura of authority gained from years at Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He also led the Netherlands to a third-place finish at the World Cup last month. MILAN - Chile defender Gary Medel took part in his first training session with Inter Milan on Monday after completing his move from English Championship side Cardiff City. “I’m finally at Inter and I’m thrilled to be part of this great club,” he told Inter’s television channel. Asked if it is true that he is nicknamed the Pitbull, Medel replied: “Yes, it is ... I bite.” Italian media said the transfer was finalised on Saturday but it was not confirmed by Inter at the time. KIRKLAND, Washington — A November trial has been set for U.S. women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo, who is accused of assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew in June. Solo, who also plays with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League, appeared in court in Kirkland, Washington, on Monday.
In June, she pleaded not guilty to two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence. KOMO-TV reports her lawyer has filed a motion to dismiss the case. Her lawyer has said Solo was a victim in the altercation. A Nov. 4 trial means Solo won’t miss time with the Reign or October’s CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2015 World Cup in Canada. Solo appeared in court accompanied by her husband, former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens.

MILAN - Chile defender Gary Medel took part in his first training session with Inter Milan on Monday after completing his move from English Championship side Cardiff City. “I’m finally at Inter and I’m thrilled to be part of this great club,” he told Inter’s television channel. Asked if it is true that he is nicknamed the Pitbull, Medel replied: “Yes, it is ... I bite.” Italian media said the transfer was finalised on Saturday but it was not confirmed by Inter at the time. Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who capped a record-breaking career with the national team by winning the World Cup last month, has retired from international football. Poland-born Klose, who scored twice in the tournament in Brazil to become the competition’s record goal scorer of all time with 16 goals, said on Monday the time was right to end a 13-year career with the German national team. The forward is the second member of Germany’s World Cup winning team to quit after the tournament following captain Philipp Lahm last month. “Winning the title in Brazil was a childhood dream come true,” the 36-year-old Lazio striker said in a statement released by the German football Association. “I am happy and proud to have contributed to this big success for German football. KIRKLAND, Washington — A November trial has been set for U.S. women’s goalkeeper Hope Solo, who is accused of assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew in June. Solo, who also plays with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League, appeared in court in Kirkland, Washington, on Monday.
In June, she pleaded not guilty to two counts of fourth-degree domestic violence. KOMO-TV reports her lawyer has filed a motion to dismiss the case. Her lawyer has said Solo was a victim in the altercation. A Nov. 4 trial means Solo won’t miss time with the Reign or October’s CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2015 World Cup in Canada. Solo appeared in court accompanied by her husband, former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens.

Often for little money. “He would go to tracks that a lot of other drivers wouldn’t go to,” Chuck Miller, the race director and president for the Empire Super Sprints circuit, said Monday. “If we had co-sanctioned races with other organizations where we really weren’t giving points or anything, but it was a deal where you wanted to see how you stacked up against the other competition, the Wards were willing to go and do that and see where they were at.” Ward began racing go-karts in 1998 at age 4. In 2010, he moved on to sprint cars and was Empire Super Sprint racing rookie of the year in 2012. The 20-year-old raced mostly on dirt tracks a few hours from his home in Port Leyden, a village of 700 in northern New York. Ward was killed Saturday night about 140 miles away at a clay track in Canandaigua. NASCAR champion Tony Stewart was the big name in the field, racing with the young guys while he was in the area for a Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen the next day. Ward and Stewart tangled, and Ward hit the wall. Ward walked
on the track apparently to confront Stewart, and was struck when Stewart’s vehicle seemed to fishtail. On Monday, several cars were parked in front of the Ward home in Port Leyden. A police officer stood across the street, politely asking reporters not to park on the road’s shoulder. Helen McHale has lived across the street for 30 years and remembers hearing the noise when Ward raced go-carts. Kevin Ward Sr. runs a successful painting business, and locals thought his son might make it big in the racing world. “His dad goes to every race,” she said. “He’s a good kid, polite, big smile, and they’re a good family.” Stewart and Ward shared a love of racing sprint cars: high-powered, winged cars built for running on short oval or circular dirt and paved tracks. Drivers have to hit the gas to turn, not necessarily use the wheel. After the crash, Ward was standing to the right of Stewart’s familiar No. 14 car on the dimly lit track. According to video and witness accounts, Ward was struck by the right rear tire and hurtled through the air.

Authorities questioned the 43year-old Stewart once on Saturday night and went to Watkins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators don’t have any
evidence at this point to support criminal intent. Povero said Monday there were no plans “at this time” to talk to Stewart again. “At this time, there are no facts that exist that support any criminal
behavior or conduct, or that any probable cause of a criminal act, in this investigation,” he said. Povero said the autopsy was completed Monday and found Ward died of blunt force trauma.

Mercedes does not believe engines have become the dominant factor in Formula 1 car performance this season, despite the advantage it has enjoyed over Ferrari and Renault. The Mercedes factory team has won nine of the 11 grands prix held so far in 2014, while customer squad Williams has helped ensure nothing but a car powered by a Mercedes engine has qualified on pole this year. Mercedes-powered teams also occupy four of the top six spots in the constructors’ table, but Mercedes GP technical chief Paddy Lowe does not believe his marque’s dominance is a sign the new hybrid rules introduced for this season have made engines the fundamental factor in car performance. “These cars are about system performance, not individual elements,” Lowe told AUTOSPORT. “It’s about how you put it all together. It’s the power unit, the efficiency of the power unit, the aerodynamics, and the manner in which they’re all put together. “It’s the collective efficiency of that package from a power, aero and
suspension point of view, as well as a weight point of view. “Our car is very quick. There are other cars running that power unit that aren’t as quick, so it’s a whole system.” Lowe said he expected much of the power difference to Ferrari and Renault would have been down to short-term issues experienced by the other manufacturers, but reckoned constant improvements by his own team might have masked the gains made by its rivals. “A lot of the deficit has been on the power unit side, and you wonder how much of that is fundamental and how much is short-term issues they need to learn to manage,” Lowe added. “I would have expected more would have been short-term and been overcome. “It’s difficult to know because we’re pushing in so many different areas and you don’t know which areas they’re pushing in. “We’ve been concentrating on our own programme and we keep pushing hard to improve the car race by race - what turns out, turns out, but I’m happy we’re managing to maintain a good gap.”

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki appeared more isolated Tuesday as he pressed his battle to remain in power while Iraqi politicians and the international community rallied behind a Shiite premier-designate who could be a more unifying figure, badly needed if the nation is to confront a spreading Sunni insurgency. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday urged the prime minister-designate, Haider al-Ibadi, to work quickly to form an inclusive government and said the U.S. is prepared to offer it significant additional aid in the fight against Islamic State militants. The power struggle in Baghdad comes as Iraq is battling militants from the alQaida breakaway group in the north and the west. The onslaught by the Islamic State, which has captured large chunks of Iraqi territory since June, has become the country’s worst crisis since the U.S. troop withdrawal in 2011. On Monday, al-Ibadi, the deputy speaker of parliament from al-Maliki’s Shiite Dawa party, was selected by President Fouad Massoum to be the new prime minister and was given 30 days to present a new government to lawmakers for approval. President Barack Obama called al-Ibadi’s nomination a “promising step forward” and urged “all Iraqi political leaders to work peacefully through the political process.” But al-Maliki, who has been in power for eight years, defiantly
rejected the nomination, insisting it “runs against the constitutional procedures” and accusing the United States of siding with political forces “who have violated the constitution.” In Sydney, Kerry said Tuesday that the United States “stands ready to fully support a new and inclusive Iraqi government.” “Without any question, we are prepared to consider additional political, economic and security options,” Kerry said. The U. S. has already increased its role in fighting back the Sunni extremists who have threatened the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq. American airstrikes have helped the Kurds achieve one of their first victories over the weekend after weeks of retreating. And senior American officials said Monday that U.S. intelligence agencies are directly arming the Kurds who are battling the militants. The development reflected a shift in Washington’s policy of only working through the central government in Baghdad. Al-Ibadi’s nomination was a major breakthrough in the political deadlock that followed the April
parliamentary elections. It shows that al-Maliki — who has demanded that he retain his post as prime minister for a third term since his bloc won most seats in the assembly — has lost some support with the main coalition of Shiite parties. His critics say al-Maliki contributed to Iraq’s political crisis by monopolizing power and pursuing a sectarian agenda that alienated the country’s Sunni and Kurdish minorities. Al-Ibadi, the former minister of communications from 2003-04, pledged to form a government to “protect the Iraqi people.” He was nominated after receiving the majority of votes from lawmakers within the Iraqi National Alliance, a coalition of Shiite parties. HARBOVAT, Moldova — Farmer Sergiu Calmac watches as row upon row of juicy red apples once destined for Russia ripen, fall to the ground and start to rot. Two weeks before Russia banned most food from the West, it placed a similar embargo on produce closer to home in Moldova, a small Eastern European country seeking deeper ties with the European Union. Farmers here in one of the poorest corners of Europe are already feeling the pain, with some deciding not to harvest some of their fruit and vegetables at all this season. Calmac’s predicament is one that farmers across Europe and beyond can expect to some degree after Russia expanded the circle of countries targeted by its food embargoes. “A weaker person than me would lose his mind, seeing how his work and investment are being lost,” said Calmac, a 60-year-old who has farmed for 26 years. “I have never had a situation like this.” In late July Russia banned foods from Moldova and Ukraine — both former Soviet republics that the Kremlin wants to keep in its sphere of influence — after they moved to deepen their political and economic ties with the EU. A ban on Polish fruits and vegetables soon followed as Warsaw called for sanctions against Moscow for its aggression in Ukraine. Last week Moscow took things further, banning most food imports from the West in retaliation for sanctions imposed as tensions mount over Ukraine. The consequences of this geopolitical tit-for-tat are particularly painful in Moldova because it is already one of Europe’s poorest countries. Fruit was its largest export, with 90 percent of its apples sent there before the ban. The lost revenue from apples alone is expected to reach $50 million, or three-quarters of a percent of GDP. YANGON — Authorities in Myanmar’s second-largest city of Mandalay have lifted a curfew imposed after attacks on minority Muslims left two people dead and injured 14 others. The rioting in early July was triggered by rumors that two Muslim men had raped a Buddhist woman. Mobs torched homes and shops, prompting authorities on July 3 to impose an overnight curfew in seven townships. The Home Ministry later said a man had falsely accused the two men of raping a woman due to a grudge against them. An order carried in state-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper on Tuesday said calm had been largely restored, allowing for its lifting. Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist nation, has been grappling since 2012 with sectarian violence that has left up to 300 people, most of them Muslims attacked by Buddhist extremists in the western Rakhine state.
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s president-elect Joko Widodo said his country was ready to act as an intermediary to calm rising tensions over territorial disputes in the South China Sea, according to an interview published Tuesday. The Jakarta governor, who won a resounding electoral victory last month, told Japan’s Asahi newspaper that he would work toward finding diplomatic -- not military -- solutions to the simmering conflicts. Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, putting it at odds with countries including the Philippines and Vietnam, and there have been several tense encounters in the area over recent months. “We’re hoping for diplomatic solutions and, if necessary, Indonesia stands ready to play an intermediary role,” Widodo said, according to the Asahi interview, which was published in Japanese.
“I refuse to accept a military solution,” he added. Indonesia does not have any disputes with China over the South China Sea, and has traditionally held a mediating role in rows over the waters. Widodo also said he would help speed up the drafting of a code of conduct between China and the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). His comments come as Beijing accused Washington of deliberately stoking tensions in the South China Sea, and rejected Washington’s proposal for a freeze on provocative actions in the region. The remarks by Foreign Minister Wang Yi came at an ASEAN Regional Forum at the weekend overshadowed by disputes in the strategically significant waters. ASEAN members have shown varying degrees of alarm to China’s growing assertiveness in the region. JAKARTA - The Jakarta Police is monitoring the cyber world to track the developments of the radical group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). “We are patrolling the cyber world to monitor the ISIS networks in Indonesia,” Adjunct Senior Commissioner Hilarius Duha, the Jakarta Police’s Cyber Crime sub-directorate head, stated on Tuesday. The monitoring was crucial to detect any spread of the ideology or teachings banned by the Indonesian government, he added. The results of cyber patrolling will be presented to the National Police for further study on ISIS, he stated. The Jakarta Police has also sent security officers and intelligence agents to detect the likely presence of ISIS members, he noted. A public campaign was also carried out to increase public awareness of the dangers of ISIS, he added. Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Dwi Priyatno recently urged the public to be vigilant because ISIS is a radical organization. Indonesian Police Chief General Sutarman recently reported that an Indonesian national who had called on Muslims to join ISIS in a video broadcast on YouTube was a fugitive terrorist. “The Indonesian police have been following the move to call on the people to join the organization (ISIS). We have identified the person whose initial is B. He is our fugitive,” he added. The Indonesian national who had appeared on an eight-minute-long video in the YouTube broadcast under the title “Join the Rank” had been on the police’s wanted list, he affirmed. LONDON - British retail sales growth rose in July, driven by an upturn inf urniture spending and other non-food purchases, according to figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) on Tuesday. Total retail spending was 1.3 percent higher in July compared with the same month a year ago, the BRC said, as growth picked up from June’s comparatively weak rate of 0.6 percent. Sales on alike-for-like basis - a measure which strips out changes in floor space and is favoured by equity analysts - fell 0.3 percent on the year, bucking expectations for a 0.6 percent rise. Murderers of a foreigner charged with death penalty Bali Post
DENPASAR - Do you still remember the sadistic murder inflicting a foreigner named Paul Robb Latourell on Jalan Banteng, Denpasar? Two culprits alleged to have committed the murder, Marsianus Simarto, 30, and Multazam Aulawi, 19, started to be put on trial at the Denpasar District Court, Monday (Aug 11). One of the defendants without accompanied by legal counsel, Marsianus Simarto, was forced to be looked for a lawyer by the state through the panel of judges chaired by AA Ketut Anom Wirakanta because the penalty charged was at least 15 years. The appointed lawyers were Eddy Hartaka and Leonardo Agustino. Meanwhile, Multazam had been accompanied by his lawyer, so the trial could be continued by the reading of the agenda of the charges by the prosecutor Gusti Nyoman Widana.
As mentioned in the indictment, in essence, the role of both defendants when killing the victim sadistically was the same. However, the prosecutor added a chapter to defendant Marsianus Simarto, namely ensnared the defendant with Article 480 paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code on the fencing of swags. Meanwhile, in the main charges, they were ensnared with Article 340 of the Criminal Code, namely planned murder that could be maximally charged with death penalty.
In the indictment was explained that Marsianus around 02:00 a.m. on Sunday (Feb 16) at Jalan Banteng No.2E, Denpasar deliberately planned to murder Paul Robb Latourell. Indeed, Marsianus was often asked Multazam (another defendant) to escort him to the victim’s house. The indictment stated if Marsianus frequently had sex with the victim from America, with a financial reward. More than that, since Marsianus often borrowed the cellular phone of Multazam to send SMS to the victim, ultimately the victim was also familiar with Multazam. More seriously, as the indictment read before the court, Multazam also had sexual intercourse with the victim (Feb 16) in exchange for IDR 200,000. Before having intercourse, both defendants purchased
a knife at IDR 25,000 at Kreneng Market. Before turning to the victim’s house, the two defendants sat relaxingly at Puputan Badung Square to wait for the right time. The next day (on the incident), around 00:30 a.m., the defendants rushed to the victim’s house. But upon arrival, the victim said if he was with someone, so that both defendants were back out to kill time. Not long after, the victim sent an SMS which essentially mentioned that he was alone at home. Both defendants returned to Jalan Banteng. There, Marsianus Simarto came in first and had homosexual intercourse. After that, they enjoyed liquor. Few minutes later, Multazam Aulawi came in and had similar intercourse. Allegedly, the victim had fear and pain, so it resulted in mismatch and caused the
victim to get angry and hit the head of defendant Multazam. Since the blow was made again and again, the defendant finally got angry as well and eventually stabbed the victim repeatedly with the knife purchased earlier at Kreneng Market, Denpasar. Victim’s blood was spurting as he was stabbed for several times. It made the defendant crazy, while the victim gave resistance and tried to snatch the defendant’s knife. Unfortunately, as losing a lot of blood on the mattress the victim was getting weaker and eventually died. Against the indictment, the judges questioned whether the defendant would file an objection or defense. The defendant through his lawyer said that he would not file defense, so the prosecutor asked to present witnesses at the hearing next week. (asa)

AMLAPURA - During this dry season, cattle farmers in barren regions such as Kubu and Abang subdistrict are forced to feed their cattle with hay moistened with saline solution. It was mentioned by a number of cattle breeders in the area of Amed, Abang subdistrict and Batu Dawa, Kubu, Monday (Aug 11). A breeder at Amed, Gede Tam, said the hay or dried grass had no vitamins or nutritional content for livestock. However, it should be given to make them survive during dry season. “Hay or our local people in Karangasem call it ‘crackers’ has no vitamins, sir. It is just used to make them survive. Becoming thin is sure because we have no green fodders. Have a look at, the surrounding grass and fields have yellowed and dried up,” he said. Other than in Amed and Bunutan, as our field observation, the cattle breeders in Kubu had already stored hay since a few months earlier. Grasses or leaves and crops were deliberately cut and kept as much as possible next to cowshed or in a special hut. Such ‘crackers’ were also often stored on tree branches. “If I keep the hay next to my cowshed or on the ground, we worry if it will be burned by pranksters. So, I deliberately keep it on tree branches,” said a cattle breeder from Kubu, Wayan Sudati. Meanwhile, the Head of Karangasem Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Ketut Artama, said that local breeders at barren village fed their cattle with hay during dry season. Prior to giving the hay to cattle, the breeders ordinarily moistened it first with saline solution. He indeed recognized the nutritional content of hay was lower than fresh grass. Haiti police search for 329 escaped prisoners Associated Press
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — An intense search was underway Monday after 329 prisoners escaped from an overcrowded prison on the outskirts of the Haitian capital in an attack apparently aimed at freeing the son of a prominent businessman held on kidnapping charges. Authorities increased security along the border and appealed for help from officials in the neighboring Dominican Republic and in nearby Jamaica, fearing some of the men who escaped had already fled the country following the breakout. In the Dominican Republic, the government ordered extra troops to its porous border with Haiti and were searching for any of the escaped prisoners, Defense Minister Sigrido Pared said. Witnesses said about 15 gunmen in two SUVs showed up at the prison in Croix-des-Bouquets before noon on Sunday and opened fire on guards, wounding two. Haitian officials said the attack appeared to be timed to coincide with recreation time and prisoners began to riot as
the shooting started. The authorities are investigating whether there was cooperation from members of the Haitian police who guard the prison, Justice Minister Jean Renel Sanon said. The attack was apparently intended to free Clifford Brandt, a member of a wealthy family, who has been awaiting trial since 2012 for allegedly running a kidnapping ring in the capital. The government offered a reward equivalent to about $25,000 for information leading to Brandt’s capture. Police Chief Godson Orleus said 10 of the 329 prisoners have been recaptured. The prison held 899 prisoners at the time of the attack, about 130 over capacity.

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Kosovo police on Monday arrested at least 40 people in a major operation targeting Islamic radicals suspected of fighting alongside extremists in Iraq and Syria. Spokesman Baki Kelani said weapons, ammunition and explosives were seized as hundreds of police officers and special police units raided 60 locations across Kosovo, including makeshift mosques believed to have served as recruiting centers. The police operation is the largest ever against suspected Islamic radicals in Kosovo. Authorities have been on alert as a growing number of ethnic Albanians have joined militants in Syria and Iraq and appeared on social media in attempts to lure more followers. The thorny issue of religion has often brought conservative Muslims at loggerheads with secular Kosovars as the two groups struggle to set up a functioning country in the aftermath of the 1998-99 separatist war against Serbia. Police said the arrests Monday were the result of two years of surveillance and investigations and that some of the arrested are suspected of being involved in
terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State group, or Jabhat Al-Nusra. They estimated at least 200 Kosovars have joined the ranks of Islamic militants as volunteers and at least 16 have been killed in battles with Syrian and Iraqi authorities. Kosovo’s government welcomed Monday’s operation and warned it will fight religious extremists in Kosovo. “Kosovo will not be a safe haven for extremism,” President Atifete Jahjaga said. Most of the suspects come from central Kosovo’s Ferizaj municipality, which is also home to the U.S. military installation Camp Bondsteel, where some 700 American peacekeepers are stationed. Maj. Mike Wallace, a spokesman for the U.S. peacekeepers, declined to give details about security arrangements in the U.S.led command, but said troops remain alert. WASHINGTON — In what may be the birth of cheap, easy-to-make robots, researchers have created complex machines that transform themselves from little more than a sheet of paper and plastic into walking automatons. Borrowing from the ancient Japanese art of origami, children’s toys and even a touch of the “Transformers” movies, scientists and engineers at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created self-assembling, paper robots. They are made out of hobby shop materials that cost about $100. After the installation of tiny batteries and motors, a paper robot rises on four stumpy legs and starts scooting in a herky-jerky manner. It transforms from flat paper to jitterbugging four-legged robot in just four minutes. This small lightweight type of robot could explore outer space and other dangerous environments, and get into cramped places for search-and-rescue missions, researchers said. But that’s just the start of what may be a longenvisioned robotic revolution. This eventually could be as technol-
ogy-changing as the three-dimensional printer, said experts unconnected with the study and Harvard robotics researcher Sam Felton, who is lead author of the paper published Thursday in the journal Science. Felton and study co-author Daniela Rus of MIT say they see a time when someone who wants a dog-walking robot would go to a store that has specialized equipment to make the device — “some sort of robo-Kinkos,” Felton said. Kinkos is an office supply store chain. And eventually the technology could produce more complex machines. “In principle it will be possible to say, ‘I want a robot to play chess with me,’ and generate a machine that has the computational abilities to play chess with you,” Rus said. Today it costs a lot of money to build
a robot, but this method is fast, cheap and specialized, Rus said. “This is a simple, flexible and rapid design process and a step toward the dream of realizing the vision of 24-hour robot manufacturing,” Rus said. These robots aren’t quite Transformers of movie and cartoon fame. Once they assemble themselves automatically with heat-activated hinges that allow the folding, there are no more changes, Rus and Felton said. The robots themselves start out a bit smaller than a normal sheet of paper. Off-the-shelf batteries and motors are embedded at a cost of about $80. Altogether, the early machines researchers made, along with the equipment to build them, cost less than $1,000 apiece, Felton said. The robots, which the researchers did not name, are about 6 inches (15 centimeters) long, 6 inches (15 centimeters) wide, and about 2 inches (5 centimeters) tall. They weigh less than 3 ounces. (85 grams) They move about 2 inches (5 centimeters) per second. But they can be made bigger or smaller, with some limitations, Felton said.
WASHINGTON - The social news group BuzzFeed unveiled a major new expansion plan, using a fresh infusion of $50 million in venture capital. Andreessen Horowitz, the big Silicon Valley venture group, announced late Sunday it is investing $50 million in BuzzFeed and that one of its partners, Chris Dixon, will be joining the company’s board. Details of the investment were not disclosed. But the New York Times reported that the deal values BuzzFeed at some $850 million. BuzzFeed meanwhile said it would expand in several ways. Its video division will expand and become “BuzzFeed Motion Pictures,” which will “focus on all moving images from a GIF to feature film and everything in between,” according to a statement Monday. BuzzFeed’s editorial team will expand to cover more breaking news, and will double the number of foreign correspondents. BuzzFeed said it will also launch a test kitchen and food lab in Manhattan “to create more original lifestyle content.” BuzzFeed International will create news sites to India, Germany, Mexico and Japan this year, in addition to the French, Spanish and Portuguese editions announced last year. “We created BuzzFeed because people still want to be informed, entertained, and inspired but the way they consume media has dramatically shifted,” said BuzzFeed founder and chief executive Jonah Peretti. “Today we think the time is perfect to grow our company, build our brand and greatly increase the content we are producing so we can be the number one digital media brand. The investment from Andreessen Horowitz will allow us to double down on our company’s mission by creating a new organization and expand rapidly in all areas.” Dixon said on his blog that BuzzFeed is growing into a more serious news organization following its debut focusing on offbeat and oddball coverage. “BuzzFeed started out focusing on lightweight content like memes, lists, funny photos, etc,” Dixon said. “This led some industry observers to dismiss BuzzFeed as a ‘toy.’ The company has since moved steadily up market, following the typical path of disruptive technologies. It now has an editorial staff of over 200 people covering a wide range of topics -- politics, sports, business, entertainment, travel, etc -- and plans to invest significantly more in high-quality content in the coming years.” Dixon added that BuzzFeed “is a media company in the same sense that Tesla is a car company, Uber is a taxi company, or Netflix is a streaming movie company... The most interesting tech companies aren’t trying to sell software to other companies. They are trying to reshape industries from top to bottom.” Andreessen Horowitz’s Marc Andreessen also touted the merits of BuzzFeed in a series of tweets. “BuzzFeed has technology at its core. DENPASAR - Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika has urged security agencies in the region to be proactive and take early-detection efforts with regard to preventing entry of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ideology and network. “Security agencies have intelligence, community-based security, and guidance units, which we hope will remain proactive to conduct early detection. Early detention and early prevention are the most important efforts,” he reported after attending a plenary session of the regional legislative assembly on revised 2014 regional budget on Monday. He expressed hope that the traditional village council as well as interfaith relations forum and interethnic associations in the island will act and move to prevent entry of ISIS ideology and network. Mangku Pastika, who is also a former Bali regional police command chief, stated that he had already conducted coordination with other parties concerned and will conduct periodical meetings with regard to increasing alertness. The ruling Democrat Party faction in the legislative assembly, meanwhile, had called on the local governments, law enforcement elements, and community members to take preventive and proactive measures to curb any movement aimed at supporting ISIS ideology. “All parties must take anticipa-
tory measures and be alert toward ISIS ideology and must not let it change the Unitary State of Indonesia (NKRI), which has so far been safeguarded by the country’s founders based on the 1945 Constitution,” Democrat Party faction member I Wayan Adnyana said reading the party’s stance at the meeting. KUTA - The Ministry of Youth and Sport is supporting the administration of Bali province to construct a world class stadium located in Cengkiling, Pecatu village, Badung district, Bali, the minister recently stated. It is expected that with the construction of the stadium, Indonesia will be able to host the World Cup 2022, Roy Suryo remarked at the closing ceremony of the ASEAN Forum and International Conference on Sport Science and Technology (AFICSST) here on Sunday (August 10). “The opportunity for Indonesia to host the World Cup 2022 is widely open. Moreover, Bali will build an international level stadium,” the minister remarked. According to him, Bali is one of the five provinces that is expected to meet the FIFA’s (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) requirements to be the venue for the event. “I propose Indonesia to be a part of the World Cup if Qatar steps down to be the host,” Roy Suryo stated, adding that it likely that Indonesia will host the event in 2022. However, Indonesia cannot single-handedly host FIFA as it requires 20 world class stadiums. “We can partner with Malaysia, Thailand, and other countries,” Suryo added. He explained that Indonesia will only be able to facilitate five international level stadiums, which will be located in Jakarta, West Java, and Palembang (South Sumatra), including Bali, if the administration confirms to construct the stadium. In addition, the ministry also expects Indonesia to host the Formula One World Championship, the highest class of single-seat auto racing. The ministry has conducted studies and has visited circuits in Australia and Sepang, Malaysia. “Let us hope and pray that this expectation can be achieved, so that Indonesia is accepted in the international forum to host the World Cup,” Roy Suryo added.

According to him, a total of 15 flooding points could have been addressed since 2010. To cope with the floods this year, the Public Works had made six new drainage projects remaining in progress. The drainages made were located on Jalan Pucuk Kesiman Kertalangu worth IDR 618 million, Jalan Subak Dalem (IDR 1.082 billion), Jalan Tukad Banyusari Panjer (IDR 1.170 billion), Pemecutan Kelod village (IDR 1.404 billion), Penatih village (IDR 853 million) and Peguyangan Kangin (IDR 571 million). “Some projects have completed such as the drainage on Jalan Pucuk Kesiman Kertalangu, Jalan Tukad Banyusari Panjer and Jalan Subak Dalem. Meanwhile, the remaining projects are still in the process. No
later than August 18, they will be completed in accordance with the contract,” he said, Monday (Aug 11). He said the puddles and floods in Denpasar would happen during rainy season from September to late December. To that end, the drainage work was targeted until mid-August only. In addition to creating new drainage, the Public Works also performed dredging in some rivers to optimize the capacity of the water when it rained. In addition, he also explained, the floods and puddles during rainy season could be caused by many factors such as the large amount of rubbish clogging the drain and the incapability of drain to accommodate rainwater. “Currently, rainwater catchment areas continue to decline so that the entire rainwater runs immediately to drainage. TABANAN - Two farmers from Tabanan having won a national achievement were invited to the presidential palace in Jakarta to attend a series of the 69th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. They are I Nyoman Suweca, 52, who won first prize in the assessment of the excellent farmers in Bali Province in 2014 and Hadiman Marzuki, 45, who won the first place in the assessment of the excellent Independent Agricultural Extension Officer of Bali Province in 2014. Aside from the two categories, two other categories that could also won achievement including Sari Mekar Joint Farmer Group (Gapoktan) of Pangkung Tibah, Kediri subdistrict becoming the third best in the assessment of Bali Joint Farmer Group 2014 and in the assessment of civil servant Agricultural Extension Officer achievement of Bali Province, namely Baiq Winarni, 49, from Tajen Sedahan hamlet, Tajen village, Penebel subdistrict, Tabanan. Nyoman Suweca explained that he managed to attain the best in terms of developing horticulture (vegetables and fruit) and floriculture (any type of flower), including the development of organic fertilizer because farming should be equipped with a clear administration, management and technology that could be applied to other farmers. Other than the administration, he explained the assessment team also focused on the cultivation of at least 6 commodities, business analysis for three consecutive years, the development of technology and self-development by attending various types of agricultural training. “To be the best, our farming
should also be supported by a good administration and management,” he said. The success achieved by farmers in Tabanan was inseparable from the role of government. According to the Chief of Counseling Executive Agency (Bappeluh) of Tabanan, the achievement was the success of all parties. As direction of the leadership, four things needing to be considered in the work included working hard, working smartly, working completely and working sincerely. “If the four aspects could be implemented, I have confident that farmers in Tabanan can present the best results,” he made sure. DENPASAR - So far, no single treatment technique can completely cure HIV patients. Although there has been antiretroviral (ARV), the treatment can only suppress the amount of virus so the symptoms of HIV do not show up and the life quality of HIV patients can be maintained. If HIV patients stop the antiretroviral therapy, the number of virus will increase so that it results in disease and disrupts the patient’s quality of life and ends at death. The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, explained on Monday (Aug 11) that by considering the increase in the HIV cases, the WHO included HIV vaccine development program as one of the disease prevention programs. “HIV vaccine has been developed by the WHO for 10 years. Currently, it is under research and testing phase,” said Suarjaya. He continued that based on the exposure of Prof. Sharon Lewin, the Department Head of the Infectious Diseases at the Alfred Hospital and Monash University, through the research conducted was found a few individuals or humans making super antibodies that could recognize a large number of viruses. “Some of these antibodies have been recognized but are only tested in laboratory,” said
Suarjaya. Although the finding was still far from an effective vaccine, it had been a hope and new invention for the development of HIV vaccine. While waiting for the making of HIV vaccine, added Suarjaya, early administration of antiretroviral drugs to HIV patients posed an option at this time. “They are proved to have reduced the amount of virus itself as well as minimize the transmission up to 96 percent,” said Suarjaya. Based on the data, the total amount of patients with HIV/AIDS in Bali currently reached 9,477 cases consisting of 5,022 cases in HIV phase and 4,455 cases in AIDS phase. The phase of HIV meant that patients had not showed symptoms of illness and looked healthy, while the AIDS phase meant to have showed symptoms due to virus attack beginning to appear. The diseases often appearing in the phase of AIDS were tuberculosis, diarrhea and fungus in the mouth. The number of death due to HIV in Bali had recorded to reach 545 since 1987. The highest risk factor was still held by heterosexual contact reaching 7,840 cases. In terms of age range, the age of 20-29 years was the most affected by HIV/AIDS reaching 3,646 people, while the age range of 30-39 years reached 3,433 people. (kmb24)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAN FRANCISCO — Robin Williams, a brilliant shapeshifter who could channel his frenetic energy into delightful comic characters like “Mrs. Doubtfire” or harness it into richly nuanced work like his Oscarwinning turn in “Good Will Hunting,” died Monday in an apparent suicide. He was 63. Williams was pronounced dead at his San Francisco Bay Area home Monday, according to the sheriff’s office in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The sheriff’s office said the preliminary investigation shows the cause of death to be a suicide due to asphyxia. The Marin County coroner’s office said Williams was last seen alive at home at about 10 p.m. Sunday. An emergency call from his house in Tiburon was placed to the Sheriff’s Department shortly before noon Monday. “This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” said Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider. “On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is
our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.” In addition to his wife, Williams is survived by his three children: daughter Zelda, 25; and sons Zachary, 31, and Cody, 19. Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative. Just last month, he announced he was returning to a 12-step treatment program he said he needed after 18 months of nonstop work. He had sought treatment in 2006 after a relapse following 20 years of sobriety. From his breakthrough in the late 1970s as the alien in the hit TV comedy “Mork & Mindy” through his standup comedy act and such films as “Good Morning, Vietnam,” the short, barrelchested Williams ranted and shouted as if just sprung from solitary confinement.
Loud, fast and manic, he parodied everyone from John Wayne to Keith Richards, impersonating a Russian immigrant as easily as a pack of Nazi attack dogs. He was a riot in drag in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” or as a cartoon genie in “Aladdin.” He won his Academy Award in a rare dramatic role, as an empathetic therapist in the 1997 film “Good Will Hunting.” As word of his death spread, tributes from inside and outside the entertainment industry poured in. “Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien - but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most - from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets,” President Barack Obama said in a statement.

NEW YORK — Emma Stone, who last year abandoned appearing in the Broadway revival of “Cabaret,” might still be in need of fishnets and a bowler hat. Roundabout Theatre Company said Monday that Stone is in negotiations to make her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles. She would take over from Michelle Williams, who has extended her run as Bowles opposite Alan Cumming through Nov. 9. Set in 1931 Berlin, “Cabaret” centers on the world of the indulgent Kit Kat Klub as it becomes intertwined with the world outside, which gets more precarious as Nazis take over. The songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb include “Willkommen” and “Tomorrow Belongs to Me.” Williams stepped into the role, once played by Liza Minnelli, when Stone had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.

The medical team consists of doctors, nurses, and ambulances, head of the Bali’s health office Dr. Ketut Suarjaya noted. “Every passenger arriving from
areas exposed to Ebola cases will be examined. If symptoms of the disease are noted, the passengers will be immediately checked by the medics. The suspects will be
isolated in rooms that have been prepared at the Sanglah general hospital, he explained. According to him, the preparedness system is not only for Ebola virus, which is currently endemic in Africa. It has been running since when bird flu, SARS, and MersCoV outbreaks had been reported. So far, no Ebola suspect has been reported in Indonesia. “The Ministry of Health has
urged to raise awareness, as currently Ebola is not only endemic in Africa, but is also found in Arabian countries. Therefore, it is necessary to increase awareness to the hajj and umroh pilgrims,” Dr. Suarjaya added. The health office has also informed people about the disease, in addition to keeping the surveillance officers on the field at all entrances of Bali, including ports.
“Not everyone who enters Bali via airport will be examined. The scanning will be done on only those arrive who from the areas prone to Ebola,” he noted. Suarjaya added that the scanner that has been installed at Ngurah Rai Airport can detect body temperature of a particular virus suffered by a person. The infection is usually indicated by an increase in body temperature.
