LOS ANGELES - After a glut of lucrative box office juggernauts from its Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney is looking to break more records with “Incredibles 2,” the long-awaited return of a quirky animated superhero family. The film -- which comes out Friday, a full 14 years after “The Incredibles” -- looks set to score the highest debut ever for an animated film at the North American box office. Experts are predicting a $140 million-plus opening weekend for Brad Bird’s sequel to his own hugely popular original, which would surpass the $135 million debut of its DisneyPixar stablemate, “Finding Dory” (2016). “For a very long time, people have been wanting this film,” Samuel L. Trump, Kim hail historic summit despite doubts over agreement

Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un hailed their historic summit Tuesday as a breakthrough in relations between Cold War foes, but the agreement they produced was short on details about the key issue of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons. The extraordinary encounter saw the leader of the world’s most powerful democracy shake hands with the third generation scion of a dynastic dictatorship, standing as equals in front of their nations’ flags. Kim agreed to the “complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula”, a stock phrase favoured by Pyongyang that fell short of long-standing US demands for North Korea to give up its atomic arsenal. Maestro of Kamasan Painting, I Nyoman Mandra,Passes away THE world of the arts in Bali returns to sorrow. Kamasan puppet painting maestro, I Nyoman Mandra, passed away after undergoing a treatment at Klungkung Hospital for several diseases he suffered. During his lifetime, he often advised to always preserve the paintings. Its taksu or divine inspiration must be maintained amid the increasingly modern era. When being visited, his residence at Sangging hamlet, Kamasan, Klungkung, is very quiet. There are only a few families sitting on the porch in the building on the southern side. The walls are adorned with many Kamasan paintings on canvas. They have different size. All the paintings featuring classic nuances with a blend of various colors are framed. On north-

ern side building which is not too large also looks the same. More paintings of larger size are displayed as well. They are prominent with very detailed strokes. Brownish yellow is the dominant color. Coming with melancholic mood, they exude serene atmosphere. The paintings tell a number of chapters of the Ramayana, Mahabharata epic to tantric stories. Altogether holds the meaning becoming the philosophy of life, especially to Hindu society. Such myriad works no longer get a touch from the maestro. He already departed forever on Sunday (Jun. 10) around 16:00 after undergoing an intensive treatment at the Klungkung Hospital for the illness he suffered for a long time. They include gastritis, prostate, lung infection to abdominal pain. This Klungkung’s native breathed his last at the age of 72 years. He just wanted the taksu of painting believed to have existed since the kingdom era should survive and sustain amid the onslaught of the increasingly modern era. “Of course, as his descendants we will do that. Take care of the studio and preserving this painting all the times,” she concluded. The works of this famous artist have its taksu. Many collectors are looking for his works, both local and foreign ones, like those from Europe. Not infrequently, he also exhibited his works in international events, such as those taking place in Germany, Canada and Australia. “My father rarely participates in the exhibitions overseas, but his works have been sold to overseas,” said Sri Wedari. ‘Norman,’ when artificial intelligence goes psycho

SAN FRANCISCO - No, it’s not a new horror film. It’s Norman: also known as the first psychopathic artificial intelligence, just unveiled by US researchers.

The goal is to explain in layman’s terms how algorithms are made, and to make people aware of AI’s potential dangers. Norman “represents a case study on the dangers of Artificial Intelligence gone wrong when biased data is used in machine learning algorithms,” according to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Pinar Yanardag, Manuel Cebrian and Iyad Rahwan, part of an MIT team, added: “there is a central idea in machine learning: the data you use to teach a machine learning algorithm can significantly influence its behavior.” “So when we talk about AI algorithms being biased on unfair, the culprit is often not the algorithm itself, but the biased data that was fed to it,” they said via email. Hence the idea of creating Norman, which was named after the psychopathic killer Norman Bates in the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock film “Psycho.” Norman was “fed” only with short legends describing images of “people dying” found on the Reddit internet platform. The researchers then submitted images of ink blots, as in the Rorschach psychological test, to determine what Norman was seeing and compare his answers to those of traditionally trained AI. The results are scary, to say the least: where traditional AI sees “two people standing close to each other,” Norman sees in the same spot of ink “a man who jumps out a window.” And when Norman distinguishes “a man shot to death by his screaming wife,” the other AI detects “a person holding an umbrella.” A dedicated website, norman-ai.mit.edu, shows 10 examples of ink blots accompanied by responses from both systems, always with a macabre response from Norman. LOS ANGELES - French video game giant Ubisoft is teaming up with a firm founded by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt to crowd source material for a forthcoming title, the companies announced Monday on the eve of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Ubisoft has long tapped into feedback from players while designing games, but the latest step will allow some to make content woven into scenes. An invitation to collaborate went live Monday on the website of Gordon-Levitt’s Hit Record, with the first project being to make music that one might hear on a space pirate radio station in Ubisoft’s “Beyond Good and Evil 2,” a sci-

Visit to Batur Volcano Museum rises

Only busy on holiday, district govt asked to help promotion BANGLI — The visit to the Batur Volcano Museum at Penelokan, Kintamani, has jumped since the past week. Every day, the visit to the museum collecting volcanic rocks can reach 500 people. Unfortunately, the increase in visits only occurs during holidays. Small number of the tourist visit on usual days is caused by lacking of promotion. Head of Batur Volcano Museum, Desak Made Andariyani, said on Monday (May 11) the increase in visits has occurred since early June. They are dominated by school children. “The visit is quite crowded. At 11:00 today there are 167 people, I think it can reach 500 people,” said Andariyani. She acknowledged the increase in tourist visits to the museum is common during semester breaks or holidays. Apart from schoolchildren in Bali, there are also students from outside Bali. Andariyani admitted that so far some schools from outside Bali have submitted their plan to visit the museum. In the museum, they commonly go around to see the existing collection to be further used as references for the assignment instructed by their teachers. “The assignment highly depends on their teacher. Usually they are invited to come here and then assigned to draw the collections in the museum. It can also be in the form of assignment to explain volcanic eruptions, and what geopark is,” she explained. She estimated the peak of visit to the museum will occur on the day before the Eid al Fitr on June 14. When asked about the tourist visits on usual days, Andariyani said it is very much different. On particular days, the visit to the Batur Volcano Museum reaches the average of100 people. The visit is dominated by foreign tourists like those from China. They usually visit the museum before going down to the Caldera area. Andariyani disclosed that in general the visit on normal days has declined since the past few years. Possibly it happens due to the less organized condition of Kintamani tourist destination. In addition, many tourists also complained to have been disturbed by the acts of street vendors. It gives impression if visitors are forced to buy their merchandise. “Currently, the Batur Volcano Museum remains to get less promotion. Arrested at the airport, Russian tourist prosecuted DENPASAR — After being arrested at Ngurah Rai International Airport of a drug case, a Russian citizen, defendant Artem Smirnov, was tried in Denpasar District Court. Based on information in circulation, the defendant was arrested because of carrying marijuana. Having been convicted of narcotic cases on Thursday (Jun. 7), the next trial will be resumed with verification by the examination of witnesses.

Meanwhile, in the last week’s indictment of public prosecutor, Paulus Widaryanto, was mentioned if the defendant in this case is charged with the Article 113 paragraph 1 or second indictment with Article 111 paragraph 1 or Article 127 paragraph a (a), Law No. 35/2009 on Narcotics. The prosecutor mentioned the defendant has no right or goes up against the law of producing, im-

porting, exporting or distributing first class drugs kept in one plastic clip containing leaves and stalks of green-browned marijuana plant with the weight of 0.24 gram gross. Before the judge panel Esthar Oktavi, the prosecutor described if the defendant flew Air Asia with flight number FD398 from Bangkok to Ngurah Rai International Airport. He arrived on February 20, 2018 around 02:00 local time.

TABANAN - Tourism village development continues to be carried out by Tabanan district through the local tourism office considering the existence of rural tourism gives promising potential, especially to improve the economy of local community. DHAKA - Landslides triggered by monsoon rains killed at least 12 people Tuesday in Bangladesh near camps housing one million Rohingya refugees, officials said. Aid agencies have been warning of the potential for a humanitarian catastrophe over the coming months as heavy rains lash an area home to the world’s largest refugee camp. Most of Tuesday’s victims were buried under mud when surrounding hills gave way after a deluge. Eleven people died in Naniarchar including a family of four, while several people remained missing, district administrator Mamunur Rashid told AFP. Another person was killed in neighbouring Cox’s Bazar district, police said. Landslides have so far killed at least 13 people this week, after a Rohingya boy was crushed to death by a collapsing mud wall at the Kutupalong refugee camp on Monday. Some 200,000 Rohingya who live on hills around the refugee camps are at risk of death or injury from monsoon rains, officials and relief agencies have said. Many of the hills around the settlements have been cleared of trees to build shelters, making the land highly unstable. Nearly 29,000 people have been moved to new locations ahead of the monsoon but the risk of a tragedy remains high.

“Relocation is continuing but the problem is where (to) find land to move people,” UN refugee agency spokesperson Caroline Gluck told AFP. At least 300 shelters were damaged by rains that began late Saturday, Bangladesh officials said. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said waterborne disease was on the rise as floodwaters mingled with latrines. “We’re already seeing increases in acute water diarrhoea, and the risk of an outbreak of waterborne diseases is now a serious likelihood,” Sanjeev Kafley, IFRC’s local chief, said in a statement. The region is forecast to receive 2.5 metres (8.2 feet) of rainfall during the monsoon season -- roughly triple what Britain gets in a year. Last year, monsoon rains triggered landslides in Cox’s Bazar and the nearby Chittagong hill tracts, killing at least 170 people. There are also fears flooding could spread disease in the refugee camps. About 700,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled neighbouring Myanmar since last August after an army crackdown which the UN says amounted to “ethnic cleansing”. Moscow authorities are pleading with locals not to drive in the runup to Thursday’s World Cup opening match to avoid causing gridlock in the city. The Russian capital of 12 million people is creaking at the seams as it starts receiving hundreds of thousands visitors for the month-long football final. Fans from the 32 participating nations will almost all either be based in Moscow or fly in and out of the sprawling and chronically congested megalopolis to the other 11 host venues. Moscow officials had insisted for months that they had planned everything out to make sure the city functioned like clockwork once the games begin. They sounded less confident on Tuesday. The city’s transportation department said some of Moscow’s busiest roads will have to be closed off to general traffic to make way for dignitaries arriving for the opening ceremony. “Due to the high number of events and the arrival of important

The city said traffic cops will also be stopping traffic to make room for various FIFA delegations and busses shuttling in fans from Moscow’s four airports. “We strongly urge city residents to use city transport and to leave their cars at home for the coming days,” said the transportation department. “This will make your trips easier to plan.” Russia has inherited the Sovietera practise of shutting down roads travelled by senior officials or visiting foreign dignitaries. Perang Pandan Festival 2018, Honoring the God of War

The word Perang means war and pandan is dedicated to the pandanus leaves which they use as a weapon to fight. Perang festival is all about giving tribute to the god of war by enjoying the battle with each other. They even get wounds from fights but enjoy it fully. The Perang pandan is also known as the dance of war. The war is a symbol of power, dominance and strength over enemies. Balinese are known for their cultures and thousands of old year rituals. Perang pandan is an ageold traditional festival which is dedicated to the Hindu of war and the sky, Indra. All male villagers about each other armed with a small shield and a tied packet of thorny pandan leaves in the other hand. The village is located in east Bali which comprises of two sub-villages, Daud Tukad and pegringsingan. The other village is known for its amazing heritage geringsing double ikat, cloth where females of village wear as part of family regalia during performing rituals. The festival is celebrated in the months of June

and July. The special area is build up, villagers decorate their houses and girls drive large man powered wooden swings as part of rituals. Tenganasese men dress traditional with bare chest and headband, use thorny pandanus as their weapon for the battle and a rattan woven for the protection. The ritual starts with gamelan music named selonding, musical instrument that is played. The pandan ceremony starts with praying at the temple and go on with circling around the village and having a traditional fermented drink called ‘tuak. The motive of this ceremony is to give tribute to the gods of war

by fighting a battle. Around this time, the main arena is packed with young boys and young men take turns in pairs to fight, inflicting their bodies with lashes from the leaves and sharp thorns. They get injured but not even a single contestant shows pain. Wounds are treated with natural medicines like herbs, turmeric and vinegar mix and which does magical to the wounds, dry up in minutes. At the end of the battle, they smear the scratches and wound with turmeric and vinegar as part of a ritual. They all sit together to dine on banana leaves and laugh and giggle together at the end. Tabanan district now has another alternative in terms of natural hot spring pools. This tourist attraction is not only found at Penatahan village, but also at Angseri village, Baturiti, Tabanan. It is located about 200 meters to the west of Puncak Tinggah Temple. Currently, this natural hot spring is more crowded with visitors. The arrangement is very neat and beautiful. France challenges Beijing in South China Sea

PARIS - France is increasing its military presence in the Indo-Pacific region, sending warships through the South China Sea and planning air exercises to help counter China’s military build-up in disputed waters.

In late May, the French assault ship Dixmude and a frigate sailed through the disputed Spratly Islands and around a group of reefs that China has turned into islets to push back against Beijing’s claim to own most of the resource-rich South China Sea. “Our patrol involved passing close to these islets to obtain intelligence with all the sensors it is possible to use in international waters,” the Dixmude’s commanding officer, Jean Porcher, told reporters in a video interview. Writing in The Wall Street Journal, a researcher from the Hudson Institute thinktank who was onboard, said that “several Chinese frigates and corvettes” tailed the French vessels. Lebaran mass migration begins

JAKARTA - The prevailing custom of Eid al-Fitr festivities, called Lebaran in Indonesia, is one of the largest temporary human migrations when workers return to their hometowns to celebrate with their families and relatives and seek forgiveness.

Such a mass exodus, or better known in Indonesia as “mudik,” is an annual tradition wherein people living in major cities, such as Greater Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and elsewhere, travel to their hometowns to meet their relatives and seek forgiveness from parents, in-laws, and other elders. The flow of mudik for the 2018 Lebaran festivities had begun over the weekend and will continue until it reaches its peak, forecast next Thursday, or a day before the Lebaran day on Friday. According to a forecast by the Transportation Ministry, the number of Lebaran holiday travelers, or pemudik, will increase by 27.77 percent to 12.24 million, while those traveling via means of public transportation will also increase by 5.17 percent to 19.5 million. Since Saturday, airports, seaports, train stations, and bus terminals in major cities were reported to have been packed with tens of thousands of pemudik. The flow of pemudik through the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi over the weekend reached 42,954 passengers for both domestic and international arrivals and departures. PT Angkasa Pura-I Public Relations official at the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport Turah Ajiari remarked that the number of passengers will continue to increase until next Thursday. In the meantime, PT Angkasa Pura II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin has forecast the homecoming flow of pemudik at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta to peak two days before the Lebaran day that will probably fall on June 15, 2018. Eid Fitr exodus smooth: transportation minister

CIREBON - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi stated that the ongoing exodus of Eid Fitr Islamic Festivity travelers via land, sea, and air, has been running smoothly so far. “Up till now, according to my estimation, two-thirds of some 19 million travelers have left for their hometowns,” Sumadi said, while monitoring the exodus at Harjamukti bus terminal, here, on Tuesday.

He was accompanied by Land Transportation Director General Budi Setiyadi and President Director of PT Jasa Raharja insurance company Budi Rahardjo. The exodus was smooth thanks to a good synergy among the transportation offices, local governments, the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), and the National Police (Polri) in every region, according to the minister.

Many travelers have managed to cut their journey duration, and the number of traffic accidents has dropped drastically compared to that of the previous year. New toll roads and smooth roads have helped shorten the traveling time, the minister remarked. LOS ANGELES - Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua have agreed terms for a heavyweight unification bout which will take place at a British venue later this year, ESPN reported on Monday. Shelly Finkel, one of Wilder’s co-managers, told ESPN that World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Wilder had accepted an offer by Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn for a fight in autumn. “We have agreed to the terms that Eddie has put out to us for a fight in the UK,” Wilder was quoted by ESPN as saying. “Deontay has accepted his terms to fight in the UK. FIFA members will decide on Wednesday whether to vote for a joint US-CanadianMexican bid or whether the World Cup -which will feature 48 teams for the first time -- will return to Africa for only the second time in 2026. A FIFA evaluation report earlier this month classified the north African nation’s stadiums, accommodation and transport as “high risk”, leaving the joint US-Canada-Mexico bid as the clear frontrunner. But the North American bid has been dogged by concerns that the vote could become a referendum on the popularity of US President Donald Trump. On Monday, bid leader Carlos Cordeiro urged FIFA members to vote on the “merits” of the bid, and not on Trump. Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen is Denmark’s standout star but the Nordic side are far from a one-man team, coach Age Hareide said on Tuesday. Nicknamed “King Christian”, Eriksen is one of the top players in the Premier League and has been voted Danish footballer of the year four times. The Dane arrived at the World Cup on a hot streak of international form, with 12 goals in 13 games, the latest being a strike against Mexico in Denmark’s final warm-up match. His sensational hat-trick against Ireland in November secured his side’s place in Russia. “It’s not quite true that Denmark is over-dependent on Eriksen,” the Norwegian coach told AFP. “We have a team that works for him but he also works for us. It’s not a one-man show.” “That is the best combination. Christian is a part of the team but he is also a star, a fantastic football player,” said Hareide before a training session in sunny Anapa near the Black Sea coast. “He can observe space quicker than anybody else, that is his key value for the team.”

Hareide said Denmark were not alone in having a standout star. “Look at Portugal with (Cristiano) Ronaldo or Argentina with (Lionel) Messi,” he said. “There are many teams with one outstanding player but that is important in a side. It can change the game for everyone.” Eriksen, 26, who took time off from World Cup preparations earlier this month to attend the birth of his first child, is modest and discreet, even after stellar performances on the pitch. Goal for Zidane!Well, at least a goal for a little plastic disk with the French football legend’s name on it. Welcome to the wacky world of button football. Brazil is just as much a powerhouse in this form of the beautiful game as the regular kind played on a field. Players stand at a special table, each with a team of 11 plastic disks about the size of poker chips. Competitors then take turns to use a separate piece, shaped like a guitar pick, to flick their players, which then strike a small ball around the field. The result can be engrossing, involving tactics, luck and no doubt a few stars. Alexandre Cerqueira Gil, who was playing “Zinedine Zidane,” goes every Saturday morning to meet fellow button football aficionados for pick-up games in Rio de Janeiro’s atmospheric Sao Salvador square. “We manage to recreate most of the situations you get in football,” said Gil, a 54-yearold lawyer. The game is played all over Brazil, as well as in a handful of other countries, but regional variations are common, meaning it can be surprisingly tricky to master. In Rio, for example, players stick to what they call the 9x3 rule. Games last 14 minutes in two halves and the players take turns to flick the ball nine times, but only three times in a row with the same “player.” - Technique matters -
