The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl of St. Petersburg, Florida, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was tackled by the 22year-old singer’s brother in the Friday evening attack, Orlando police said. Loibl is believed to have traveled to Orlando for the event. He had two loaded handguns, additional ammunition and a hunting knife at the time of the shooting, police said. Orlando Police Chief John Mina told reporters the suspect did not appear to have a criminal record and there was no indication he and Grimmie knew each other. Mina said it appeared he may have been a deranged fan. “We believe he came here to commit this crime,” Mina said. Grimmie, who had just performed as the opening act for the band Before You Exit, was inside the Plaza Live concert hall signing autographs at the time of the shooting. The suspect approached Grimmie and opened fire. He was then rushed by the singer’s brother. “Her brother, Marcus, is a hero and possibly saved countless other lives. He is not injured,” Orlando police said in a statement, adding there were about 120 people at the venue at the time. Christina Grimmie was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and died early Saturday morning. The suspect died at the scene of the shooting. Although patrons had their bags and purses checked for weapons at the venue, there were no metal detectors and the security guards were unarmed, Mina said. Grimmie’s brother mourned the loss of his sister in a Facebook post on Saturday. “Christina was more than my sister,” People magazine reported the post as saying. “She was a partner in life. A superstar. A goofball. Introverted. And a friend to everyone. Genuinely. But above all ... she was my baby sister. I honestly don’t know what I’ll do without her,” he wrote in the post. A note expressing condolences was posted on the door of the Loibl home in St. Petersburg, the Tampa Bay Times and local broadcaster WFLA reported. The coastal areas of Klungkung have been devasted by the recent tidal waves. Not only were fishing boats damaged but nearly everyone along the coast has been affected by such things as their buildings being destroyed. Many coastal people have become worried about how they will continue to earn their livelihood. Two visitors to Bali were reportedly washed out to sea by waves at Padanggalak Beach last week and another victim has gone missing from a fast boat that was crossing over to Nusa Penida. Although the entire southern coast has experienced large waves in the last week, Klungkung has been especially hard hit. On May 24th dozens of fishing boats on Kusamba Beach were smashed by large waves but this was just eh beginning of the damage that was to follow. 1 hectare of farmland near Lepang Beach in Tulikup Village was completely inundated with salt water and on SUnday (June 5th) salt farmers in Kusamba Village had their warehouse destroyed by the brutal waves. On Wednesday (June 8) the coastal area of Jungkut Batu, Nusa Penida also witnessed the ferocity of the waves as the revetment there was washed out causing some homes in Kelod Hamlet, to become flooded in the afternoon.

Explosion at Shanghai’s main international airport injures 4

SHANGHAI — A small explosion at a check-in area of Shanghai’s main international airport injured four people Sunday but did not cause any disruption to flights, officials said. The blast at Pudong International Airport, China’s second-busiest, occurred at around 2:20 p.m. and appeared to have been caused by some sort of homemade explosive, the airport’s management said on its verified microblog account. It said the four injured people

were taken to a hospital but gave no word about their condition. There was no disruption to flights into or out of the airport, the management said, although police and internal security troops cordoned off the area and checked for additional explosives.

Ni Bowen, who was waiting to check into his Philippine Airlines flight when the explosion happened, said passengers ran for safety after a loud bang rocked the hall. “At that moment, a beer bottle filled with white smoke rolled right by my feet. I was scared and made off at once,” said Ni, 30, who works for a machinery manufacturer. One of the injured, a Chinese

man, sustained a severe neck injury, China’s official Xinhua News Agency said, citing hospital officials. It said the injury may have been self-inflicted. Also injured was a 53-year-old Philippine man. After sailing for ten minutes towards Pesinggahan Harbor, Dawan, Klungkung, the boat started to be hit by massive waves. The victim, 57 year old Ni Gusti Ayu Sukaseni was thrown into the sea and has yet to be found. Head of the Klungkung Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Putu Widiada, recently said that the condition of the ocean remains hazardous and that a total of 17 officers have been called upon to conduct a search along the coast of Klungkung from Wates Beach to Tegal Besar. The Nusa Penida Police are also combing the beach. Tidal flooding continues to occur in Klungkun and at Klotok Beach the sea water has reached the road. The Fish Landing base (PPI) at Karandadi has also been smashed by the violent waves. The traditional crossing harbour at Kusamba has thus been temporarily closed. BPBD Klungkung officers have reported from the filed saying that waves have been as high as 3 - 4 meters.

Emergency and Logistics Division Head of the BPBD Klungkung, Made Mula Astra, explained that his division is collecting data about the damage that has been caused by the tidal flooding so far and confirmed that in addition to crop failure near Lepang Beach in Takmung Village, several food stalls have been severely damaged as have salt making huts on Kusamba Beach, and homes in Jungkutbatu. Klotok Beach’S embankment and pedestrian path have also suffered damage from the waves. Mula Astra explained that his division will apply to BPBD Bali for assistance to make repairs as soon as possible. There has been no budget set aside for disaster mitigation for the 2016 fiscal year. According to the rules, BPBD Bali must provide assistance of IDR 5 million. However, since BPBD Klungkung has not allocated any budget for disasters, the proposal is only requesting funds less that 5 million from BPBD Bali. Mula Astra added that for the 2017 fiscal year, his division will propose a budget of disaster mitigation and will coordinate with the regional development planning board (Bappeda) related to the budgeting. “We strive to have a budget fallocated for disaster mitigation in 2017” he said. Jokowi comes, billboards harmed again

DENPASAR - Destruction and dismantling by force against the ‘Reject Benoa Bay reclamation’ billboard occurred again before the arrival of President Joko Widodo in Bali, Saturday (Jun. 11). Arrival of the president to visit the operation of diesel and gas power station (PLTDG) at Pesanggaran Denpasar was then resumed with the opening of cultural parade of the 38th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in front of the Bajra Sandhi Monument, Renon. As the information compiled by Bali Post, there is a billboard disrupted in the area of Pesanggaran, while the billboard dismantled by force was in front of Bengkel hamlet meeting hall, Sumerta, Denpasar (three-way intersection of Denpasar Art Centre). But by residents, the billboard has been installed back. Coordinator of the Balinese People’s Forum for Rejecting Benoa Bay Reclamation (ForBALI), Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana, for the umpteenth time denounced the

suppressive efforts against people’s aspirations in various ways. He also admitted to be bored because of the destruction or forcibly dismantling of the billboard on the rejection against reclamation always occurred whenever the president or vice president comes to Bali. “For us, it is a boring action, no longer tense. Today people will definitely go up against. In other words, the more frequently they suppress the aspirations, people will be better trained against tyranny,” he said.

Other than billboards, people wearing T-shirt “Bali Rejects Reclamation” also received intervention from the authorities. The man who is also Executive Director of WALHI Bali admitted to being hit in the right jaw, while Adi Sumiarta was hit in the left nape. Related to the beating, Coordinator of ForBALI, Wayan ‘Gendo’ Suardana assessed that it is not just meant to scare us, but also to cripple both colleagues. Such actions are excessive and beyond the standard operating procedures specified. Although it was fairly tense, Gendo just called it the funniest incident in the 2016.

“This incident is funny, just like a joke because the authorities fear with the billboards and T-shirts. Actually this is an open event, the party of people and there are never any dress codes. It is legitimate for people to wear anything, including the ‘reject reclamation’ T-shirt as we use,” he said. Gendo admitted that so far he has always been wearing the ‘reject reclamation’ T-shirt wherever he goes or every time doing activities. Many people also wear this shirt every day. ‘Reject reclamation’ Tshirt is part of honor in the struggle for rejecting the Benoa Bay reclamation. “We do not know what measure to take after this. Jokowi finally opens 38th Bali Art Festival after long wait

DENPASAR - President Joko Widodo finally opened the cultural parade of the 38th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) that took place in front of Bajra Sandhi Monument, Renon, Denpasar on Saturday, June 11th. The president’s busy schedule caused the festival’s officially opening to be pushed from 2PM to 3:30Pm.

“Punapi gatrane (How are you)?” said Joko Widodo in Balinese to thousands of people who turned out to watch the parade. The crowd instantly replied ”Becik (Fine).” “Hopefully, you are in good condition” replied Jokowi to great applause and roaring cheers that welcomed the 7th president of the Republic of Indonesia. Jokowi was glad to be in Bali to open the parade of the 38th BAF as this festival is more than just a popular arts festival but also serves a cultural, educational and economic function for the local economy of Balinese people. The BAF cultural parade was commenced with the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI)’ performance of ‘Tabuh Ketug Bumi’ that accompanied the Shiva Nataraja Dance denoting the inaugural dance for the opening of the BAF. The parade went on with presentations of cultural art envoys from Klungkung, Karangasem, Jembrana, Bangli, Tabanan, Denpasar and Badung districts, followed by representatives from NTT, India, France and Timor Leste and finally Gianyar’s envoys and Udayana University’s marching band. During the performance by Gianyar’s envoys, that took place in front of the honorary stage, the President and First Lady, Iriana Joko Widodo, along with the Governor of Bali, rode an ornamented car towards the Governor’s office. During the ride, the president handed out t-shirts and notebooks that read: “Come to learn and learn and learn”. Once in front to the Governor’S office, president Jokowi invited people to take pictures with him. “Everyone must stay in line”, he said in a friendly manner. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said that initially the president did not know that the BAF goes on for a whole month. “He asked me how much it costs to put on the festival and I told him IDR 15 million. He replied that it was very expensive for a one day festival, but when I explained that the festival was a month long he said that it was actually very cheap. We work through the districts and provide coaching for the art groups with the fund”, said the governor. Other than the president, the 38th BAF parade was also attended by Minister of Education and Culture Anies Baswedan, Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya, Minister of Religion Lukman Hakim, the Cabinet Secretary Pramono Agung, Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives Nyoman Adi IBP/edi Wiryatama as well as Bali’s regents and mayor as well as President Joko Widodo opened the cultural parade of the 38th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) that took place domestic and foreign honorary guests. 36 kilometers of Tabanan beach threatened by abrasion

TABANAN - Tabanan has coastline spreading along about 36 kilometers and they are all threatened by abrasion. Approximately 13 kilometers of which have been hit by severe enough abrasion so that they require coastal protection. Yeh Gangga Beach, one of the beaches, even requiring protection measures has received assistance from provincial government worth IDR 4.4 billion to build breakwater along one kilometer. The Head of the Tabanan Public Works Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Anom Anthara, explained that 36 kilometers of the beach owned by

Tabanan are currently threatened by abrasion. From the length of the beach, 13 kilometers are in critical condition. To handle this, according to Anom, Tabanan has received assistance from the province to create a safety barrier in the form of breakwater although it cannot cover the whole. “Of the 13 kilometers of coastal abrasion occurred, only some five kilometers have been protected,” he said. On Yeh Gangga Beach, the coastal protection in the form of breakwater is made of concrete with the height of five meters. Initially, construction of the breakwater was

indeed close to the shore but since Yeh Gangga Beach is often used to tether fishing boats of fishermen and to become the venue of melasti procession and release of turtle hatchlings so that the construction was finally decided a little further away from shoreline. “Later on the breakwater built does not interfere with the fishing and religious activities,” said Anom. He continued that beaches in Tabanan are experiencing quite severe abrasion where it takes place about half a meter each year. For critical Yeh Gangga Beach, the abrasion can reach 1 to 1.5 meters per year.

It happens because protector of the beach like coral reef begins to deteriorate due to global warming. He denied if the abrasion on the beaches of Tabanan is caused by sand dredging. “In Tabanan, we strictly prohibit the sand dredging on the beach,” he said. In the meantime, related to the high waves occurred in recent years, a number of fishermen in Tabanan preferred not to go to sea. Chief of the Indonesia Fishermen Association (HNSI) of Tabanan, Ketut Arsana Yasa, said that high waves have happened since a month ago. Fishermen mutually

A local fisherman of Yeh Gangga, I Ketut Baret, 50, said that he cannot go to sea for a month so that he just kills time by repairing boats and fishing gear like nets. “I’d just like to kill my leisure time because we cannot go to sea,” he said. Bangli has many interesting tourism villages to be visited. One of them is the Undisan tourism village in Tembuku subdistrict.

Handling trash independently by ecobrick DENPASAR - Currently the government is intensifying waste reduction program, such as with the establishment of waste bank, independent waste management et cetera. Several months ago, Agung Kirana, the Chief of the Klungkung Sanitation and Landscaping Agency learned to manage waste, especially plastic waste from a Canadian, Russell Maier, with ecobrick method. He said that ecobrick is a brick made from plastic bottles. So that it can be used as a replacement for concrete blocks. In essence, it is incorporating plastic into plastic, locking plastic in plastic bottles. All kinds of plastic can be put into plastic bottle to make the ecobrick because it is resistant for hundreds of years while brick only lasts for 70 years. “If people get bored with the shape, it can be pounded and made into another form. In other words, ecobrick can be used as replacement of brick, be cemented and so forth,” he said when met at the seminar on integrated waste management at Kertalangu, Saturday (Jun. 11). The making of ecobrick is meant to minimize plastic waste, plastic bag scattered in the households, in the road and so forth. “When this method is applied well,

at least the plastic disposal to landfill or integrated plastic waste processing can be reduced,” he said. Then, ecobrick method aims to avoid burning the plastic waste because it is hazardous to health as a result of the toxin released, especially for expectant mothers as will affect the fetus in the womb when they inhale smoke from the burning of plastic waste. “I’ve got knowledge from a Canadian, Mr. Russel. He has been successfully applying it in Canada and the Philippines. Now, he went to Bali, and Klungkung first tried to invite him and the regent of Klungkung is very, very enthusiastic to support it. The regent even learns to make ecobrick and then makes a road show to disseminate this to schools and hamlets. And now in Denpasar I’d like to share my knowledge and this method to students in Denpasar,” he said. Admittedly, in Klungkung district, especially at schools, this method started to be aggressively implemented. As proved, ecobrick is put into competition in a series of the National Education Day. There are participants making dust bin from ecobrick, ornamental bike, boat and flower pots.

Ecobrick can be commercialized when they are in the form of finished goods such as tables or chairs. I Made Murah, Coordinator of the 3R integrated waste processing of Kertalangu, said that 60 percent of the waste in Denpasar belongs to organic one consisting of leaves, while the remaining is used ritual oblation like canang and food remnant. “The waste mostly consists of ritual remaining,” he said. Although the organic waste is not too damaging to the environment, if the ritual oblation waste like the base of canang is made by using stapler not bamboo pin, the organic waste composting with Osaki system will not be good. When it comes to plants, it can spread diseases. In addition to organic waste, 35 percent of the waste in Denpasar is inorganic waste and 15 percent of residue. Residue is the waste that cannot be processed again, while 4-10 percent of residual rubbish at Kertalangu integrated waste processing has been sorted for two times. “The residues here (Kertalangu integrated waste processing) consisting of tissues, diapers, Softex, softness, unusable fabric and cigarette butts. Outgoing president warns Philippines about spectre of martial law

MANILA - Philippines President Benigno Aquino on Sunday appealed to Filipinos to defend their freedom and democracy and remain vigilant as he warned the horrors of martial law under the late Ferdinand Marcos could happen again. In his last Independence Day speech before stepping down on June 30, Aquino hailed the transformation of the Philippines during his term from being the “Sick Man of Asia” to one of the fastest growing economies. He said such progress came without disregard for the rule of law, due process and human rights. As the Southeast Asian nation prepares for a change in leadership, some people fear Aquino’s successor, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, could take a more authoritarian path. Part of Aquino’s speech was a video presentation about how his father and namesake and the entire family suffered during the

martial law years. His father was assassinated in 1983 at Manila’s international airport, three years before a mass uprising that toppled Marcos. “If we are not going to be vigilant, it could happen again,” Aquino said after the video presentation at the palace event attended by diplomats, top government officials and business executives. Duterte remains hugely popular despite his comments about extrajudicial killings, calling bishops “sons of whores” and a joke about a murdered rape victim. His latest controversial comment saying journalists were “not exempted from assassination” raised concerns, though he later

clarified that he does “not condone nor tolerate killing of journalists, regardless of the motive of the killers, or the reason for their killing.” Duterte has also said he would allow the burial of Marcos at the Philippines’ heroes’ cemetery, despite strong opposition led by the Aquino family. Marcos’ son and namesake said on Saturday his father’s body, which remains in a glass coffin in a mausoleum in his hometown Ilocos Norte, would be transferred to the heroes’ cemetery possibly in September. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s veteran former leader Mahathir Mohamad campaigned against his old party over the weekend, seeking to turn voters against scandal-tainted Prime Minister Najib Razak in two by-elections being fought next week. Mahathir, who led the country for 22 years until his retirement in 2003, quit the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) earlier this year in disgust over Najib’s grip on the party despite allegations of massive corruption. The feisty 90-year-old has teamed up with old foes in the Pakatan Harapan opposition alliance to remove Najib, his one-time protege. “If the people want to see this country being robbed by the PM, who has now passed a law that makes him stronger than even the Agong (King)... If that’s what the people want, they’ll get what they deserve,” Mahathir told a newsconference while campaigning on Saturday. Najib, who denies any wrongdoing, has seen his popularity sink to all time lows because of a multi-billion dollar graft scandal at the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) state fund and reports that around $1 billion were deposited in his personal bank account. The multi-ethnic Barisan Nasional coalition led by UMNO has lost support among the Southeast Asian nation’s ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities because the controversy, leaving the embattled premier desperately trying to shore up his Muslim Malay votebank. Last month, UMNO convinced parliament to allow members to debate a bill submitted by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) which has stayed outside the anti-Najib alliance - for the introduction of hudud, the Islamic penal code that sets punishments like amputation and stoning. The constituencies being contested on June 18, midway through the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, are largely Malay, and the only runner that the anti-Najib alliance has in the race is a new moderate Islamist party that splintered from PAS. The by-elections at Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar will show how well support for Najib is holding up, with an eye to a national election due in 2018. HELSINKI — A key union in Finland says it has voted to join a government-proposed labor reform pact that aims to boost the stagnant economy by easing labor market rules and cutting workers’ benefits. Friday’s decision by the Metalworkers’ Union, which represents over 140,000 people and is the biggest for industrial workers, paves the way for the milestone deal, which other major unions and employer representatives have already approved. Under the deal, the center-right government pledges to lower taxes and cancel planned spending cuts in return for an increase in work hours and pension contributions, lower holiday bonuses and a freeze on wages for a year. A rigid labor market is seen as one reason for Finland’s economic woes. The European Commission predicts the economy will grow 0.7 percent this year, less than any EU country apart from Greece. (ap)

Poland appoints economist as new central bank

WARSAW — Poland’s lawmakers have approved economist Adam Glapinski to be the nation’s new top banker. Glapinski succeeds Marek Belka, whose six-year term as head of the National Bank of Poland expired Friday. The 66-year-old Glapinski is a member of the bank’s Monetary Policy Council and its board of managers, and is considered to be a moderate. He has vowed to protect the bank’s independence from political pressure. Glapinski is an associate of Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the ruling conservative Law and Justice party that is focused on improving living standards for those on the lowest income through a system of financial benefits. In the early 1990s he led ministries related to Poland’s economic development.(ap)

Cronus Chemicals initially planned to begin building near Tuscola in 2015 but now says it anticipates building sometime next year, spokesman Dave Lundy said. The plant, which will produce nitrogen-based fertilizers urea and ammonia, is expected to employ about 175 people full-time, as well as about 2,000 construction workers. Cronus also now lists the cost of the project as $1.9 billion on its website; originally construction was to cost $1.4 billion. Lundy says the larger figure reflects finance costs, adding that construction costs have not increased. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted the

company a one-year extension on its air permit. Construction now must start by October 2017. No date has been set but Lundy said the company expects building to start “well before” then. Lundy attributed the delay to, among other things, ongoing negotiations with contractors. “Everything is actually going fine,” he said. “Obviously they’re slower — with big projects things happen slower than one might like them to do.” Brian Moody is executive director of Tuscola Economic Development, Inc., which works to develop the economy in the town of 4,500 people. He said his confidence that Cronus will get the plant built is

“strong.” “We understand that there will continue to be challenges but we are committed to helping Cronus achieve their goal of beginning construction in Tuscola,” Moody said in an email to The Associated Press. Cronus is owned by a group of Swiss and Turkish investors, and has a U.S. headquarters in Chicago. The project will be built on the site that was once considered for the now-defunct FutureGen clean coal project. The company chose the Tuscola site in 2014 over a location in Iowa. The state of Illinois agreed to provide a package of incentives that have thus far not been publicly disclosed. No opening date is set, though Cronus’ website indicates the plant should take about 37 months to build.(ap)

Dengue claims seven lives in Ambon

AMABON - Up to early June 2016, dengue cases in the eastern Indonesian city of Ambon in the province of Maluku rose to 139, which included seven fatalities, according to local health office spokesperson Yusda Tuharea. “Last year there were only 25 dengue cases but up to early June this year the number increased to 139, which also included seven deaths,” Tuharea remarked here Saturday.

Dengue fever is spreading across five areas in the city of Ambon, namely Kayu Putih, Passo, Kebun Cengkeh and Batu Merah, and Benteng Karang, she said. Dengue fever is currently at an endemic stage in some regions of Indonesia such as North Sumatra, Banten, East Java, and West Nusa Tenggara. In West Nusa Tenggara, it has claimed 22 lives, according to local Health Office Chief Eka Junaidi.

“The number of dengue cases in the province continues to rise every day, and until June 1, 2016, some 22 people had died of the disease,” Junaidi remarked in Mataram recently. Junaidi expressed concern over the continued increase in casualties due to Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, with the number of cases reaching 2,064 across the province. In fact, on May 19, the number had reached 1,939, with 19 fa-

talities, but this time, the figure had risen to 2,064, with 22 deaths. Of the 10 districts/cities, Mataram city had the highest incidences of dengue fever, with 643 cases, including seven fatalities until June, Junaidi added. Lombok Timur was the secondworst affected district with 535 cases, which included six fatalities in May. By June 3, that figure had risen to 575, with one more death. (ant)

JAKARTA - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla (JK) said he respects decision of the Indonesian Physician Association (IDI) that its members would refuse to be the executor of castration against pedophilia. “Well, it is their right, but not all doctors are members of IDI. There are military doctors and police doctors,” Kalla said here on Friday (10/6). The government has issued a presidential regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) allowing the Indonesian court to give additional punishment of castration against sexual abuse on children. The Perpu, however, has yet to be approved by the House of Representatives. Earlier, IDI general chairman Ilham Oetama Marsis expressed IDI rejection of the castration punishment saying it would refuse to be the executor of the punishment. The government proposal on the Perpu came after growing cases of pedophilia in the country. IDI said castration by physicians is against their oath and ethical code. Kalla said physicians should not be worried too much about castration as it is only a punishment a judge of court could mete out to protect children from sexual abuses. In giving the punishment a judge would need special testimonies and not all perpetrators would be punished with castration, he said. “If the punishment is castration, well let the police doctors do the job,” he added. On May 25 , 2016 President Joko Widodo signed the Perppu on protection of children. Under the Perppu perpetrators of sexual abuse on children is punishable with castration. The Perppu has triggered new controversy. In addition to IDI, a number of observers have expressed opposition to the regulation. Law expert from the Islamic Institute of IAIN Ambon DR Ismael Rumadhan called on the House of Representatives not rush into approving the Perppu. “I call on the House to carefully consider the wisdom of the Perppu as castration is tantamount to life long punishment,” Dr Ismael said.(ant)

Police: Mass casualties after club shooting; shooter is dead

ORLANDO — A gunman opened fire at a crowded, wellknown central Florida nightclub, and multiple people have been wounded, police said Sunday. The shooter inside the club is dead, Orlando Police said on the department’s official Twitter page. It was not immediately clear how the shooter died, or how many people were wounded in the shooting. Police described it as a “mass casualty situation.” Police reported “multiple injuries” following the shooting at Pulse Orlando, a popular gay dance club. People were told to stay away from the area. Dozens of police vehicles, including a SWAT team, swarmed the area around the club. At least two police pickup trucks were seen taking what appeared to be shooting victims to the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Police said via Twitter that a noise heard near the shooting site was a “controlled explosion.” No other details were provided. Pulse Orlando posted on its own Facebook page around 2 a.m.: “Everyone get out of pulse and keep running.” Just before 6 a.m., the club posted an update: “As soon as we have any information we will update

everyone. Please keep everyone in your prayers as we work through this tragic event. Thank you for your thoughts and love.” Police said local, state and federal agencies were investigating. The incident follows the fatal shooting late Friday of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who was killed after her concert in Orlando by a 27-year-old Florida man who later killed himself. Grimmie was a YouTube sensation and former contestant on “The Voice.” Jon Alamo said he was at the back of one of the club’s rooms when a man holding a weapon came into the front of the room. “I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,” Alamo said. “The music stopped.” Club-goer Rob Rick said it happened around, 2 a.m., just before closing time. “Everybody was drinking their last sip,” he said. He estimated more than 100 people were still inside when he heard shots, got on the ground and crawled toward a DJ booth. A

bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and an area in the back where only workers are allowed. People inside were able to then escape through the back of the club. Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge when he started hearing gunshots. “I was thinking, are you kidding me? So I just dropped down. I just said please, please, please, I want to make it out,” he said. “And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don’t get shot.” He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged, where police were telling people to back away from the club. He saw injured people being tended to across the street. Mina Justice was outside the club trying to contact her 30-year-old son Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: “He’s coming.” “The next text said: ‘He has us, and he’s in here with us,’” she said. “That was the last conversation.” (ap)

LONDON - Britain’s influence in the European Union will be stronger if it votes to remain in the bloc in a June 23 referendum, Prime Minister David Cameron said on Sunday with the latest polls showing Britons almost evenly split over whether to stay or go. One poll published late on Saturday gave a two-point lead to supporters of “Remain” and the other showed those in favour of Brexit were one point ahead. In an interview on BBC television, Cameron - whose “In” campaign has been branded as scaremongering by pro-Brexit supporters for warning of the risks of quitting the 28-nation EU - highlighted the advantages of staying. “If we wake up on June 24 and we are in, Britain’s authority within the EU will be stronger,” he said. “No other country has done what we have done, hold a renegotiation (for improved EU membership terms), hold a referendum and then people will know that the British agenda ... is going straight to the top.” The referendum will be a decision with far-reaching implications for politics, the economy and trade in Britain and well beyond. James, the powerful four-time National Basketball Association MVP, took only four free throws in Friday’s hard-fought Game Four loss to the Warriors in Cleveland that put Golden State within one win of a successful title defense. “He never gets calls,” Lue said about James, who has tested the Warriors’ inside defense time and again on single-minded drives to the hoop. “I mean, he attacks. KINGSTON - Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt sounded a strong warning to his rivals for the Rio Games by winning the 100 metres at the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston in 9.88 seconds on Saturday after recovering from a stumble. Bolt clocked the second fastest time of the year behind Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut’s 9.86 and despite the bad start the six-time Olympic champion caught up with the strong field, which included Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell, at 60 meters with time to ease up in the last five meters. “I’m happy I got a season best. It was not a perfect race but I was able to win,” Bolt said after the

race. Spain’s goalkeeper doubts lingering before Euro 2016 opener

TOULOUSE — On the eve of Spain’s European Championship opener, the name of the team’s starting goalkeeper is still in doubt. Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has yet to announce whether it will be veteran Iker Casillas or troubled David de Gea in goal when the two-time defending champions take on the Czech Republic on Monday. There used to be no question about Spain’s goalkeeping position as Casillas was an indisputable starter for years, the captain of a golden generation that won two European titles and the World Cup. But after more than a decade in goal, the veteran goalkeeper sees himself fighting for a spot with De Gea, the Manchester United player who seemed poised to get his chance in the starting lineup before surprising allegations surfaced about his involvement in an investigation into a Spanish pornography filmmaker. He has denied any wrongdoing, but the damage was already done only three days before the team’s first game. The allegations could not have come at a worse time for Del Bosque, whose decision now will

be even more scrutinized. If he picks Casillas, many will say it was because of the off-the-field problem affecting De Gea. De Gea started in Spain’s final warm-up game, a disappointing 1-0 loss to 137th-ranked Georgia at home last week, but Del Bosque said it didn’t mean he would be in goal against the Czechs in Toulouse. The goalkeeper had to address the media and his teammates on Friday after a protected witness in the case against the pornography filmmaker mentioned his name to authorities. He was not being accused by authorities but they confirmed that his name appeared in court papers. “There is no reason not to believe in him,” Del Bosque said. “He will have the same chance to start

as he would before all of this happened. We are supporting him.” De Gea practiced normally with the rest of the squad after explaining himself and seemed in position to start if Del Bosque decided to pick him. “I’m coming off good seasons with Manchester United,” the 25-year-old goalkeeper said. “We’ll see what happens. I’ll accept what the coach decides.” Spain’s third goalkeeper at Euro 2016 is Sevilla’s Sergio Rico. The 35-year-old Casillas, Europe’s most capped player with 167 international appearances, lifted all three major trophies won by Spain in the last decade, but he was among those who played poorly when “La Roja” was eliminated early at the World Cup in Brazil two years ago. His move from Real Madrid to FC Porto last year also didn’t help his cause in the national team, although he remains a fan favorite. Del Bosque’s reluctance to commit to Casillas as a starter is another sign of the dismantling of Spain’s winning generation. (ap)

UEFA opens disciplinary case against Russia over violence

PARIS — Russia is facing UEFA sanctions after disciplinary proceedings were opened against the federation for crowd disturbances and racist behavior by its fans during a European Championship game against England. The English Football Association, whose fans fled the stadium in Marseille after being attacked by a large group of Russian fans, has not been charged by UEFA. Russia has also been charged over fireworks being set off inside the Stade Velodrome, where the game finished 1-1. UEFA said its control, ethics and disciplinary body will judge the case on Tuesday, imposing sanctions ahead of its second Euro 2016 game against Slovakia on Wednesday in Lille. European soccer’s governing body is only taking disciplinary action over the disorder inside the stadium, where it spread after three straight days of fighting near the port in the Mediterranean city. Although UEFA holds national federations responsible for their fans’ behavior inside stadiums, it typically does not act on incidents elsewhere. When UEFA’s disciplinary panel judges incidents in Marseille, it could take Russian fans’ track record at Euro 2012 into account. UEFA imposed a series of sanctions, including fines, on the Russian FA for incidents at that tournament, which was hosted by Poland and Ukraine. England is likely to be treated more leniently by UEFA because its fans have little history of disorder in recent European Championship qualifying and final tournaments. Saturday’s game was Russia’s first to be organized by UEFA since the lifting of probationary sanctions that were threatened after violent disorder by its fans in Poland four years ago.
