Dazzling ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is a can’t miss thrill
The silences in “Mad Max: Fury Road” are unsettling. The moments are few and infrequent, but it’s not until the fiery roar of the engines and the thrashing of the guitars are suddenly stripped away that you can fully feel how deeply the film has flooded your being. The theater — and your heart — pulsates with the lack as you recover and wait for more. It’s in the silences that director George Miller’s singular genius becomes evident, and for good reason: It’s the only time the film allows you to breathe. Thirty years after Miller gave the world “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,” he’s returned to his own postapocalyptic world and created an exceptional, fearless and poetic masterpiece that’s primed to become a modern classic. In this anarchic world, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is a lone wolf. As he tells us in the prologue, he’s a man whose past traumas have reduced him to a single instinct: Survival. Max’s only humanity seems to be in his haunting visions of a child asking for protection. Otherwise, he’s gone full animal. As Max, Hardy doesn’t so much speak. He grunts and growls and scurries for freedom. But Max quickly gets entangled with others when the war lords of the wasteland put a fish hook in his neck and strap him on as a hood ornament to chase after the rogue Furiosa (Charlize Theron). She’s managed to escape the Citadel in a powerful, lumbering War Rig with the wives of their tyrannical leader Immortan Joe (Hugh KeaysByrne, who also played Toecutter in “Mad Max”). Much of the film is spent with the women, and eventually Max, on the rig as they race across the desert away from the painted fighters on their tail. Furiosa, seeking redemption for untold sins, has made it her purpose to bring the wives to “the green place” — an idyllic haven she was taken from as a child. The wives, played by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton and Zoë Kravitz, are all ethereal, spiritual beauties. Though physically perfect and visibly unmarked by the

harsh conditions of the land, as Immortan Joe’s property, their collective trauma is more insidious. When they fight back and jump in to help their more grizzled and skilled travel mates, they do so without fear or hesitation. Looking almost sturdy in comparison, it is Theron who steals the show as the steely-eyed, one-armed, and aptly named Furiosa. Her fierce and unwavering commitment to her self-assigned mission propels the sparse narrative and invigorates those around her, when death often seems like not just the easier option, but probably the more appealing one, too. Painted and scarred to the point of disguise, Nicholas Hoult is also a standout as Nux, an unlucky, but endearingly devoted Immortan Joe foot soldier who delivers on one of the few actual character arcs of the film. Ultimately, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is almost aggressively anti-character, though. The dialogue is beautifully lean and purposeful, allowing what does exist to have maximum impact. For Theron and Hardy, their triumphant performances are is in their eyes. In the end, it is the bright, fresh visuals juxtaposed with the impressively choreographed and always surprising action and pacing that make the film. Cinematographer John Seale (“The English Patient”) has infused the barren landscape with a feast of striking, saturated colors, while Miller has made a two-hour race across the desert into a truly riveting must-see and see again. As we drive full speed into another summer (and half-decade) of sequels and interconnected universes, Miller has reminded us that blockbusters have the potential to not only be art, but radically visionary — even the fourth in a series. What a lovely day, indeed. “Mad Max: Fury Road,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of violence throughout, and for disturbing images.” Running time: 120 minutes. The performer has completed 12 anger management sessions and has signed up to work with a South Los Angeles group to improve its facilities, according to the report. As a result, their life is increasingly worse because they cannot take advantage of the open opportunities in the field of agriculture. It was conveyed by Chairman of the Baja Tani (Proud to be Farmer) Community of Ababi village, I Ketut Semadiyasa, after the dissemination of food security by Commander of the 1623/ Karangasem Military District at Bias hamlet, local village, Monday (May 11). He acknowledged that making farmers still exist is quite difficult. The main problem is in their mindset. A farmer is not enough just to work hard, but must act correctly and move fast. “Our farmers in Bali are already working hard. The market (of farmers’ product) has existed. However, the agent bridging their products does not exist,” said Semadiyasa. On that account, this former commissioner of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) of Bali for two periods sees that there should be a group of people who are willing to bridge the farmers of Bali. Thus, his party established the Baja Tani Community. The ignorance of farmers related to farming precisely and fast may not continue. Finally, the community he established always attends every meeting of farmers at Ababi village to provide an understanding for farmers, open the space to think and inform each farmer about the opportunities in order to grow together. This makes the life of our farmers in Bali difficult to develop,” he said. He mentioned that there are dozens of opportunities for agricultural products that can be developed in Bali. Other than rice, some of the other commodities easily developed in Bali include the Manila hemp, Calina papaya, honey pineapple, strawberry, potato, ginger and even marigold flower. To note, the demand for marigold being fairly easily grown in Bali is quite high. At least, Bali needs 27 tons each day. In addition to the need for Hindu religious ceremony, it is also often used for welcoming garland at the airport, use at Vihara and it is even now developed into marigold tea products. The product is developed by one of the businessmen from Germany, where it is now only Ukraine has been familiar with this marigold tea product. To meet the demand for marigold tea products in Ukraine, it needs a container of marigold containing 10 tons of marigold flowers being ready to be processed or 100 tons of fresh marigold flowers, not to mention the location in other countries where the German businessman develops the business. “I have proved that one hectare of paddy plants, with 0.20 hectare of marigold plants, the marigold give double results compared to paddy plant,” said Semadiyasa. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Mirror, mirror on the wall: Smart mirrors boost sales
NEW YORK — Imagine a fitting room with a “smart” mirror that suggests jeans to go with the red shirt you brought in. It snaps a video so you can compare the image side-by-side with other colorful shirts you try on. It might even show you how the shirt will fit without you having to undress.
A handful of primarily upscale retailers, including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, are testing versions of this high-tech fitting room. And experts say the masses will be able to try these innovations at more stores in the next few years as the technology gets cheaper. This trend is a way stores aim to catch up to online rivals like Amazon.com that are able to gather information on which items shoppers browse and use that to recommend other products. The new technology that enables physical stores to collect much of the same data as online retailers raises privacy questions, but executives say customers are offered a choice and the data is protected. Stores are tapping into the significant role the often-forgotten fitting room can play in purchase decisions. While 36 percent of store browsers wind up buying something, 71 percent of shoppers who try on clothes in the fitting room become buyers, according, Paco Underhill, a retail consultant. Yet the typical fitting room isn’t always inviting: Only about 28 percent of shoppers even walk into a dressing room of a typical clothing chain, Underhill says. “The dressing room experience in many places has been close to miserable,” Underhill said. “There’s bad lighting. They’re dirty. And they have poor service.” Some companies are working to change that impression. Later this year, Big Space, a technology company, plans to test at an undisclosed clothing chain a new mirror that recognizes the gender of a customer and makes recommendations based on that. Customers also will be able to request or purchase the items directly from the mirror and have them shipped. Other technologies already are being tested in stores. The patented MemoryMirror from a company called MemoMi is one of the most advanced in this so-called virtual dressing, a feature that’s expected to be tested in U.S. stores later this year. The mirror is outfitted with sensors, setting off motiontriggered changes of clothing. MemoryMirror uses pixel technology that captures even small details such as a wrinkle on a skirt as it moves. Even for those trying on the clothing, the mirror also doubles as a video camera, capturing a 360 degree view of what an outfit looks like and making side-by-

It is considering activating the “virtual dressing” feature. WASHINGTON - Smartphones are now used in 72 percent of US homes and have become the third most owned electronics item for Americans, a survey showed Monday. The annual survey by the Consumer Electronics Association found that smartphones trail only televisions, which are in 97 percent of US households, and DVD players, in 78 percent. “A strong consumer appetite for mobile connected devices is causing some very interesting changes in the (electronics) ownership landscape,” said Steve Koenig, market research chief at the association. “These mobile devices have greatly influenced the type of content Americans consume, and given birth to new emerging tech categories such as wearable activity trackers and smart home devices that consumers are beginning to embrace more broadly.” The survey showed smartphone ownership jumped eight percentage points in the past year. Meanwhile tablet computers saw a big gain of nine points and are present in 54 percent of US households, according to the study. Laptop computers were number four on the list at 67 percent, followed by digital cameras, printers, headphones, desktop computers and tablets. Video game consoles held the number 10 spot. Among the fast-growing items were fitness trackers, up six points to 11 percent, and digital media streaming devices, rising five points to 29 percent, the association said. Russian gets 16 years for importing meth DENPASAR - A Russian woman was sentenced to 16 years in jail on Monday after being convicted of illegally importing two kilograms of methamphetamine. Magnaeva Aleksandra (26) was also fined Rp10 billion, failing to pay which her sentence will be extended for another six months. “The defendant was validly and convincingly proven guilty of committing a crime by importing more than five grams of a category I non-plant narcotic drug without any right or against the law,” chief judge of the district court in Denpasar, I Wayan Sukanila, said while reading the verdict. The judges believe that the defendant had acted against Article 113 Paragraph 2 of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics in the first charge. The sentence was lighter than the prosecutors’ demand for 17 years in jail, but the fine was the same as their demand. Among factors that worked in favor of Aleksandra and reduced her sentence were that she had been polite during the court’s session, has never been jailed before, had admitted her guilt, and pledged to not repeat her action. Aleksandra was caught by customs officers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport on December 7, 2014, carrying narcotic drug methamphetamine weighing 2,101 grams. The defendant brought the illegal substance from Hong Kong aboard Hong Kong Airlines Flight Number 707. The customs officers saw something suspicious in the suitcase she was carrying through X-Ray screening. After opening it, they found five plastic bags containing
two kilograms of methamphetamine. The defendant, flanked by her lawyer Hari Purwanto, said she accepted the verdict. Recently, Indonesia executed eight drug convicts on death row on the island of Nusakambangang, off southern Central Java. The eight drug convicts were Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran from Australia; Raheem Agbaje Salami, Silvester Obiekwe Nwaolise alias Mustofa, and Okwudili Oyatanze from Nigeria; Zainal Abidin from Indonesia; Rodrigo Gularte from Brazil; and Martin Anderson alias Belo from Ghana. The execution of another drug convict on death row, Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso from the Philippines, was postponed because she is still needed as a witness in a human trafficking case in her country. Moreover, French citizen Serge Areski Atlaoui evaded the second round of executions as a judicial review of his case is still ongoing at the State Administrative Court (PTUN). If the PTUN rejects his appeal, he will be executed as planned, Spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office Spontana affirmed. On January 18, Indonesia executed six drug convicts on death row, including five foreigners. He added that to control the ASEAN market and to succeed in the free market competition, Bali is expected to accentuate and preserve its traditional cultures. “It would be much better if Bali focuses on its traditional cultures. However, it should also follow global trends to create attractive products,” Sebastian pointed out. He further noted that with a population of approximately 240 million, the country has 40 percent of the market, which is the largest among the member states of the ASEAN.
“It can support potentials of the MICE industry in Indonesia,” Sebastian affirmed. “MICE” is used to refer to a particular type of tourism in which large groups are brought together for particular purposes. Such trips are usually planned well in advance. Most components of MICE are well understood, perhaps with the exception of incentives. Incentive tourism is usually undertaken as a type of employee reward by a company or an institution for targets met or exceeded, or a job well done. Unlike the other types of MICE tourism, incentive tourism is usually conducted purely for entertainment, rather than professional or educational purposes. MICE tourism usually consists of a well-planned agenda centered around a particular theme, such as a hobby, a profession, or an educational topic.

AEC accelerates the growth of foreign tourist arrivals
JAKARTA - The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is an agreement among the ASEAN countries to open up the flow of goods, services and investment among the countries, without the exception for tourism. “The AEC precisely kindles the growth of foreign travelers as expected by President Jokowi to reach 20 million within a period of four years,” said the Head of Tourism Resources Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gede Pitana, on a one-day seminar at Garuda City, Soetta Airport Tangerang, Monday (May 11).

According to Pitana, there are 11 sectors that will be affected by the implementation of the AEC where seven sectors related to goods and industry as well as five sectors related to services. Tourism included in the service sector is considered to have been adequately prepared to engage in the AEC. “Now, our domestic market has reached 250 million people and starting from January 1, 2016, our domestic market will amount to 600 million people. It will no longer cover the Sabang to Merauke, but cover the ten country members of the ASEAN,” said Pitana. With the commencement of the AEC next year, the cross-border flow of goods and labor among the ASEAN countries will be more intensive. In the field of tourism, the Ministry of Tourism will soon certify the Indonesian workers, especially in the areas such as hotels and restaurants. “Tourism labor is obliged to be certified. Other than being mandated by the law, it is also made to make our labor recognized in the competition at the ASEAN level,” he said. Ministry of Tourism certainly wants the players of tourism in Indonesia to be better prepared in facing competition in the ASEAN level. Kerry to meet Russia’s Putin amid Ukraine, Syria tensions
SOCHI, Russia — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin with an eye on easing badly strained relations over conflicts in Ukraine and Syria. Kerry laid a wreath at a World War II memorial in the Black Sea resort city Tuesday before holding talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Later, he was to meet Putin on the brief visit, his first to Russia since May 2013 and the advent of the Ukraine crisis. The top U.S. diplomat plans to test Putin’s willingness to push pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine to comply with an increasingly fragile ceasefire agreement, according to U.S. officials traveling with him. Kerry will also seek to gauge the status of Russia’s support for embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose forces have been losing ground to rebels, and press Moscow to support a political transition that could end that war, the officials said. In addition, Kerry will make the case to Putin that Russia should not proceed with its planned transfer of an advanced air defense system to Iran. Kerry’s trip comes at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow have plummeted to postCold War lows amid the disagreements over Ukraine and Syria.
In a sign of the considerable strains, the Kremlin said Monday that the Putin meeting was not confirmed, although U.S. officials insisted it was. A senior State Department official brushed aside the non-confirmation of the meeting from the Russian side, saying tersely, “We usually don’t go to Sochi to see Foreign Minister Lavrov.” On Tuesday morning, the Kremlin finally confirmed that Putin will meet with Kerry. Putin’s spokesman welcomed Kerry’s decision to travel to Russia. “We have repeatedly stated at various levels and the president has said that Russia never initiated the freeze in relations and we are always open for displays of political will for a broader dialogue,” Dmitry Peskov told journalists in Sochi. NAJRAN, Saudi Arabia — Khatim Umm Salem’s quiet, secure life betrays no signs of the war taking place just a few miles away. In the mornings, the elderly woman sits in front of a fan outside her tiny shop in the old market of Najran. In the evenings, she listens to the Quran on the radio. She sleeps with the door unlocked, since all her neighbors know her. When asked about the war, she shrugs and says a prayer. As a widow, she receives free health care and the little she needs, 1,000 Saudi riyals or $267, from the government each month. “Sometimes I make a profit, sometimes I don’t,” says the Saudi villager, who does not know how old she is. Saudi Arabia, an oil-rich nation with about 20 million citizens, is now leading an offensive against the Shiite Houthi rebels in neighboring Yemen, who are supported by its arch-rival Iran. Yet if not for the huge propaganda posters and the state media, you would never know this was a country at war, in much the same way that life in the United States sometimes seemed distant from the conflict in Iraq. From the ancient city of Najran to the gleaming, SUV-ridden capital of Riyadh, much of the kingdom continues on its prosperous way, as reflected in AP interviews with more than two dozen people. One reason is that many citizens are already living comfortably with government help, and the new monarch, King Salman, ordered an extra month’s salary for civil servants. And for those in the pockets of poverty overshadowed by Riyadh’s gated wealth, the war is largely the
royal family’s business. In Riyadh itself, there is a vague sense of pride, of a nation finally coming into its own. The war comes at a pivotal time for Saudi Arabia: King Salman ascended to the throne in January, and he has all but appointed his son as his successor. As this generational change takes root, the country wants to project a strong image of itself as the backbone of Arab solidarity by leading Arab countries against the Houthis. It also wants to be in the line of defense of Sunnis against Iran, which has supported Shiite militias in Iraq and the government of Bashar Assad in Syria. “There’s support for the war because it came after much indignity from Iran,” according to writer and analyst Abdulmajeed al-Buluwi. He said the Yemen offensive was seen as “revenge for dignity and honor.” The offensive shows how far this country has come since the first Gulf War of 1990, when the U.S. military defended its borders. Saudi Arabia has now acquired tens of billions of dollars in military equipment. It has also emerged from the Arab Spring unscathed, unlike former powerhouse Egypt, and is now propping up Cairo’s ailing economy with aid. In return, Egypt is a key
partner against the Houthis. “Saudi Arabia is in a new stage where it is more outspoken and more aggressive,” al-Buluwi said. The tacit acceptance of the war also has to do with how it is portrayed. In a capital that is deeply religious, the country’s top ultraconservative clerics have passed a fatwa, or edict, declaring the Yemen offensive a religious duty. The kingdom’s powerful business class has rushed to express support, at least on paper. The Saudi Binladin Group, for example, took out a full-page newspaper ad that included images of F-16 fighter jets and the flag alongside King Salman saluting the armed forces. Solb Steel’s ad spelled the name of King Salman with rockets and a fighter jet, and Saudi Steel pledged “to protect each and every inch of our country, even with the last drop of our blood.” In a country with strong ties between business and politics, the support is useful for both. The governor of Riyadh issued a written notice, seen by The Associated Press, urging businesses to erect billboards praising the royal family and offering contacts of a local engineer to help with the “celebration” of the new monarch. DALLAS — Consumer complaints against airlines are rising even as the carriers get slightly better at staying on schedule. The U.S. Department of Transportation said Monday that it received more complaints from consumers in March than it did in either the previous month or March of 2014. While the numbers are still very small — only about one in every 50,000 passengers complains to the government — they vary greatly among carriers. Passengers on Frontier Airlines were 34 times more likely to complain than passengers on Southwest
Airlines, which has the lowest complaint rate. Spirit Airlines had the second-worst rate. Frontier and Spirit are so-called ultra-low-cost carriers that charge low base fares but add fees for many things including carry-on bags and seat assignments. A Frontier spokesman, Jim Faulkner, said customers who called the reservations center in March were sometimes put on hold for up to 45 minutes as the airline switched to a new reservations system. Faulkner said that Frontier added staffing, and hold times have been reduced to under three minutes.
He said complaints were down so far in May. Transportation Department officials recently discussed the complaint levels with both Frontier and Spirit, according to a department spokeswoman. There are no penalties for having a high complaint rate, but the department considers them when deciding whether to investigate potential violations of rules dealing with fare advertising, overselling flights and other consumer issues. Overall, the March complaint rate among the 14 airlines covered in the government report jumped 27 per-
cent from February and 55 percent from the previous March. The Transportation Department said that 78.7 percent of flights operated by those 14 airlines arrived on time in March, up from 72.8 percent in February and 77.6 percent in March 2014. Indonesian police arrest 7 in seafood slavery case
In April, a week after the story JAKARTA — Two Indonesians and five Thais were arrested on charges of human trafficking connected with slavery in the seafood industry, Indonesian police said Tuesday. Dharmanto said. “We will not stop here. We will pursue those who are involved in this case, whoever they are.” Police will recommend they be charged by prosecutors. If the men go to trial, they could face jail sentences of up to 15 years and fines as high as $46,000, he said. He said the number of suspects would likely climb because authorities are still investigating how thousands of foreign fishermen from Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand were put on fishing boats in Thailand — sometimes after being tricked or kidnapped — and brought to work in Indonesian waters where they were not allowed to leave. Many
said they were beaten and forced to work up to 24 hours a day with inadequate food and unclean water. Most were paid little or nothing at all. The yearlong AP investigation found that tainted fish can wind up in the supply chains of some of America’s biggest food sellers, such as Wal-Mart, Sysco and Kroger. It can also find its way into the supply chains of some of the most popular brands of canned pet food, including Fancy Feast, Meow Mix and Iams. The companies have all said they strongly condemn labor abuse and are taking steps to prevent it, such as working with human rights groups to hold subcontractors accountable.

The suspects are accused of locking fishermen up for one to six months in a prison-like cell located in the company’s compound in Benjina. Police have seized five fishing boats allegedly used by the suspects for human trafficking and slavery-like practices as well as dozens of fake passports and seamen books. Dharmanto said the arrests were made after police questioned more than 50 foreign fishermen from Myanmar and Cambodia along with 16 witnesses, including company employees, immigration and port officials. Navy tows migrant boat out of Indonesian waters
JAKARTA - A boat carrying hundreds of migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh has been towed out of Indonesian waters, a navy spokesman said Tuesday, but it remains unclear where the vessel is destined next. The vessel arrived off Aceh early Monday with about 400 migrants on board, local authorities estimated, one of a series of vessels to arrive in Indonesia and Malaysia in recent days carrying people from Myanmar and Bangladesh. But the Indonesian navy confirmed Tuesday it had provided the boat with fuel and towed it out of Indonesian waters, declining to say if it was heading to Malaysia, its suspected destination. “It was towed out of Indonesian territory,” Manahan Simorangkir told AFP. “We gave them fuel and asked them to proceed. We are not forcing them to go to Malaysia nor Australia. That is not our business. Our business is they don’t enter Indonesia because Indonesia is not the destination.” Another boat carrying an estimated 600 migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh arrived in the north of Aceh, the westernmost province of Indonesia, at the weekend. Many of those aboard are ethnic Rohingya, considered by the UN to be one of the world’s most persecuted minorities. Buddhist-majority Myanmar views its population of roughly 1.3 million Rohingya as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, and they have been targeted in outbreaks of sectarian violence there in recent years, prompting many to flee. Massachusetts man faces attempted murder charge in Scotland PRINCETON, Massachusetts — Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts say a Princeton man has been extradited to Scotland to face an attempted murder charge in connection to the poisoning of a student at the University of St. Andrews. The Boston Globe reports 24year-old Alexander Hilton is accused of spiking a fellow American student’s red wine with methanol in 2011. At the time of the incident, Hilton was studying economics
and computing at St. Andrews. A federal court judge in Boston approved Hilton’s extradition in 2013. Hilton remained free on bond while pursuing appeals. But he was jailed in Rhode Island in April 2015 while awaiting extradition. U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office says Hilton returned to Scotland on Friday. Hilton’s lawyer in Scotland and Scottish prosecutors couldn’t be reached for comment on Monday. (ap)

Spain withdraws permit for Airbus A400M test flights
MADRID — Spain has withdrawn permission for test flights of Airbus A400M planes until an investigation determines the cause of a crash last weekend near the southern city of Seville that killed two pilots and two flight test engineers, Defense Minister Pedro Morenes said Tuesday. Speaking on Onda Cero radio, Morenes said, “it’s not a good idea for those planes in production phase, and about to do tests, to fly without knowing what really happened with the (crashed) plane.” He said all precautions must be taken. The measure means that planes in the final stages of assembly in Seville will not be able to carry out test flights. Morenes said he had no details on the investigation’s progress. He said that probes involving such planes are incredibly complicated and the need to know what happened as soon as possible should not interfere with the rigor necessary in a proper investigation. He said both human and technological factors would be taken into account but added that the possibility that the pilot may have maneuvered the plane in the final
moments to avoid a more serious accident may provide some clue as to what happened. “It appears that the pilot made a maneuver to try to avoid worse things happening in the accident,” Morenes said. He gave no further details. Some media outlets on Monday cited Airbus Sevilla labor union representative Francisco Figueroa as saying that the pilot, by landing the plane in a field, apparently avoided crashing it into a nearby shopping mall and some factories. Murray now a genuine contender for Nadal’s crown
LONDON - Andy Murray... French Open champion! That notion would have been dismissed out of hand in years gone by but he will journey to Roland Garros later this month with many backing the Briton to go all the way. Until last week he had never won a claycourt title. But, after claiming his first in Munich, he headed to Madrid where he blazed through a tough draw before crushing claycourt king Rafa Nadal in the final. A year ago Murray managed only six games in a semi-final defeat by Nadal at the French Open as the Spaniard rolled on towards a ninth title at the claycourt grand slam. He also reached the semis in 2011, so his record in the French capital is not shoddy, but by common consent the red dust was not a surface suited to Murray’s game. Yet something has changed and with Nadal struggling, the 27-yearold could be the man to exploit the Spaniard’s troubles, even if Novak Djokovic is now the favourite to win the title. British bookmaker William Hill shortened Murray’s French Open odds from 12-1 to 8-1 after his 6-3 6-2 win over Nadal in Madrid, with Nadal at 9-4 and Djokovic the 5-6 favourite. Although Nadal’s slump has boosted recently-married Murray’s chances, his improved form on clay is just as relevant. The attacking philosophy of his coaching
team, Amelie Mauresmo and Jonas Bjorkman, is paying dividends. Murray now looks more prepared to be the aggressor early in rallies, which on slow clay helps him dictate points. Forcing opponents further back behind the baseline with earlystruck groundstrokes, Murray can pull the trigger on one of the best drop shots in tennis. His serve, particularly his second delivery, is a revelation. It’s spin and bounce bamboozled Nadal to such an extend that the Mallorcan only managed to win four points on it on Sunday. Murray will need to sustain his current level to have a chance of winning an unlikely French crown, but his belief is soaring ahead of this week’s Rome Masters. Physically, Murray now looks as strong as at any stage since he underwent back surgery in 2013. “In the past I struggled physically on the clay, but my team have been brave enough to make some pretty drastic changes and I feel much better because of it,” Murray said. “To win a Masters Series on clay is a step in the right direction.” Murray, however, warned of writing off Nadal. “That court (in Paris) he’s only lost one match in his career...there was enough to suggest that with another couple of weeks preparation he can go all the way.” (rtr)

SAO PAULO — A Brazilian sports tribunal has suspended Chile playmaker Jorge Valdivia for two matches for calling referees “thieves.” Valdivia was found guilty of using the term to describe the officiators in the final of the Sao Paulo state
championship last month. Valdivia wasn’t playing in the match, but referee Vinicius Furlan wrote in his report that the player made the accusations in the tunnel that led to the changing rooms at Palmeiras’ Allianz Parque.
The ban means Valdivia will miss the first two games of next year’s regional tournament. He can still play in the Brazilian league, which began this weekend. Valdivia’s contract with Palmeiras ends in August. (ap)

Murray now a genuine contender for Nadal’s crown
LONDON - Andy Murray... French Open champion! That notion would have been dismissed out of hand in years gone by but he will journey to Roland Garros later this month with many backing the Briton to go all the way. Until last week he had never won a claycourt title. But, after claiming his first in Munich, he headed to Madrid where he blazed through a tough draw before crushing claycourt king Rafa Nadal in the final. A year ago Murray managed only six games in a semi-final defeat by Nadal at the French Open as the Spaniard rolled on towards a ninth title at the claycourt grand slam. He also reached the semis in 2011, so his record in the French capital is not shoddy, but by common consent the red dust was not a surface suited to Murray’s game. Yet something has changed and with Nadal struggling, the 27-yearold could be the man to exploit the Spaniard’s troubles, even if Novak Djokovic is now the favourite to win the title. British bookmaker William Hill shortened Murray’s French Open odds from 12-1 to 8-1 after his 6-3 6-2 win over Nadal in Madrid, with Nadal at 9-4 and Djokovic the 5-6 favourite. Although Nadal’s slump has boosted recently-married Murray’s chances, his improved form on clay is just as relevant. The attacking philosophy of his coaching
team, Amelie Mauresmo and Jonas Bjorkman, is paying dividends. Murray now looks more prepared to be the aggressor early in rallies, which on slow clay helps him dictate points. Forcing opponents further back behind the baseline with earlystruck groundstrokes, Murray can pull the trigger on one of the best drop shots in tennis. His serve, particularly his second delivery, is a revelation. It’s spin and bounce bamboozled Nadal to such an extend that the Mallorcan only managed to win four points on it on Sunday. Murray will need to sustain his current level to have a chance of winning an unlikely French crown, but his belief is soaring ahead of this week’s Rome Masters. Physically, Murray now looks as strong as at any stage since he underwent back surgery in 2013. “In the past I struggled physically on the clay, but my team have been brave enough to make some pretty drastic changes and I feel much better because of it,” Murray said. “To win a Masters Series on clay is a step in the right direction.” Murray, however, warned of writing off Nadal. “That court (in Paris) he’s only lost one match in his career...there was enough to suggest that with another couple of weeks preparation he can go all the way.” (rtr)

Massachusetts man faces attempted murder charge in Scotland PRINCETON, Massachusetts — Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts say a Princeton man has been extradited to Scotland to face an attempted murder charge in connection to the poisoning of a student at the University of St. Andrews. The Boston Globe reports 24year-old Alexander Hilton is accused of spiking a fellow American student’s red wine with methanol in 2011. At the time of the incident, Hilton was studying economics
and computing at St. Andrews. A federal court judge in Boston approved Hilton’s extradition in 2013. Hilton remained free on bond while pursuing appeals. But he was jailed in Rhode Island in April 2015 while awaiting extradition. U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office says Hilton returned to Scotland on Friday. Hilton’s lawyer in Scotland and Scottish prosecutors couldn’t be reached for comment on Monday. (ap)
BERLIN — Swiss police say a man believed to have killed four people before shooting himself last weekend was taken into psychiatric care a few weeks ago, and officers had searched his home for weapons. Authorities believe the 36year-old man fatally shot his brother-in-law, parents-in-law and a neighbor in the town of Wuerenlingen Saturday before killing himself. Police in his home canton

Spain withdraws permit for Airbus A400M test flights
MADRID — Spain has withdrawn permission for test flights of Airbus A400M planes until an investigation determines the cause of a crash last weekend near the southern city of Seville that killed two pilots and two flight test engineers, Defense Minister Pedro Morenes said Tuesday. Speaking on Onda Cero radio, Morenes said, “it’s not a good idea for those planes in production phase, and about to do tests, to fly without knowing what really happened with the (crashed) plane.” He said all precautions must be taken. The measure means that planes in the final stages of assembly in Seville will not be able to carry out test flights. Morenes said he had no details on the investigation’s progress. He said that probes involving such planes are incredibly complicated and the need to know what happened as soon as possible should not interfere with the rigor necessary in a proper investigation. He said both human and technological factors would be taken into account but added that the possibility that the pilot may have maneuvered the plane in the final
moments to avoid a more serious accident may provide some clue as to what happened. “It appears that the pilot made a maneuver to try to avoid worse things happening in the accident,” Morenes said. He gave no further details. Some media outlets on Monday cited Airbus Sevilla labor union representative Francisco Figueroa as saying that the pilot, by landing the plane in a field, apparently avoided crashing it into a nearby shopping mall and some factories. The permit suspension will not affect a planned A400M test flight that is due to leave Toulouse, France at 2:30 p.m. (1230 GMT) Tuesday and land at Seville some two hours later. Fernando Alonso, the head of military aircraft at Airbus Defense and Space, is expected to take part in the test as a flight engineer in
a symbolic show of confidence in the plane. Alonso took up his post in January, after Airbus dismissed his predecessor following complaints by governments about continued delays in finishing the cargo plane whose rollout went billions over budget and years over deadline. Four of the five countries that already have A400Ms — Britain, Germany, Malaysia and Turkey — have grounded the plane. France, which has six, says it will only use the aircraft in urgent operations. DALLAS — Consumer complaints against airlines are rising even as the carriers get slightly better at staying on schedule. The U.S. Department of Transportation said Monday that it received more complaints from consumers in March than it did in either the previous month or March of 2014. While the numbers are still very small — only about one in every 50,000 passengers complains to the government — they vary greatly among carriers. Passengers on Frontier Airlines were 34 times more likely to complain than passengers on Southwest
Airlines, which has the lowest complaint rate. Spirit Airlines had the second-worst rate. Frontier and Spirit are so-called ultra-low-cost carriers that charge low base fares but add fees for many things including carry-on bags and seat assignments. A Frontier spokesman, Jim Faulkner, said customers who called the reservations center in March were sometimes put on hold for up to 45 minutes as the airline switched to a new reservations system. Faulkner said that Frontier added staffing, and hold times have been reduced to under three minutes.
He said complaints were down so far in May. Transportation Department officials recently discussed the complaint levels with both Frontier and Spirit, according to a department spokeswoman. There are no penalties for having a high complaint rate, but the department considers them when deciding whether to investigate potential violations of rules dealing with fare advertising, overselling flights and other consumer issues. Overall, the March complaint rate among the 14 airlines covered in the government report jumped 27 per-
cent from February and 55 percent from the previous March. The Transportation Department said that 78.7 percent of flights operated by those 14 airlines arrived on time in March, up from 72.8 percent in February and 77.6 percent in March 2014. Indonesian police arrest 7 in seafood slavery case
In April, a week after the story JAKARTA — Two Indonesians and five Thais were arrested on charges of human trafficking connected with slavery in the seafood industry, Indonesian police said Tuesday. The arrests come after the AP reported on slave-caught seafood shipped from Benjina to Thailand, where it can be exported and enter the supply chains of some of America’s biggest food retailers. “They have committed an extraordinary crime, and we will not let it happen again in Indonesia,”
Dharmanto said. “We will not stop here. We will pursue those who are involved in this case, whoever they are.” Police will recommend they be charged by prosecutors. If the men go to trial, they could face jail sentences of up to 15 years and fines as high as $46,000, he said. He said the number of suspects would likely climb because authorities are still investigating how thousands of foreign fishermen from Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand were put on fishing boats in Thailand — sometimes after being tricked or kidnapped — and brought to work in Indonesian waters where they were not allowed to leave. Many
said they were beaten and forced to work up to 24 hours a day with inadequate food and unclean water. Most were paid little or nothing at all. The yearlong AP investigation found that tainted fish can wind up in the supply chains of some of America’s biggest food sellers, such as Wal-Mart, Sysco and Kroger. It can also find its way into the supply chains of some of the most popular brands of canned pet food, including Fancy Feast, Meow Mix and Iams. The companies have all said they strongly condemn labor abuse and are taking steps to prevent it, such as working with human rights groups to hold subcontractors accountable.

The suspects are accused of locking fishermen up for one to six months in a prison-like cell located in the company’s compound in Benjina. Police have seized five fishing boats allegedly used by the suspects for human trafficking and slavery-like practices as well as dozens of fake passports and seamen books. Dharmanto said the arrests were made after police questioned more than 50 foreign fishermen from Myanmar and Cambodia along with 16 witnesses, including company employees, immigration and port officials. JAKARTA - A boat carrying hundreds of migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh has been towed out of Indonesian waters, a navy spokesman said Tuesday, but it remains unclear where the vessel is destined next. The vessel arrived off Aceh early Monday with about 400 migrants on board, local authorities estimated, one of a series of vessels to arrive in Indonesia and Malaysia in recent days carrying people from Myanmar and Bangladesh. But the Indonesian navy confirmed Tuesday it had provided the boat with fuel and towed it out of Indonesian waters, declining to say if it was heading to Malaysia, its suspected destination. “It was towed out of Indonesian territory,” Manahan Simorangkir told AFP. “We gave them fuel and asked them to proceed. We are not forcing them to go to Malaysia nor Australia. That is not our business. Our business is they don’t enter Indonesia because Indonesia is not the destination.” Another boat carrying an estimated 600 migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh arrived in the north of Aceh, the westernmost province of Indonesia, at the weekend. Many of those aboard are ethnic Rohingya, considered by the UN to be one of the world’s most persecuted minorities. Buddhist-majority Myanmar views its population of roughly 1.3 million Rohingya as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, and they have been targeted in outbreaks of sectarian violence there in recent years, prompting many to flee. AEC accelerates the growth of foreign tourist arrivals
JAKARTA - The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is an agreement among the ASEAN countries to open up the flow of goods, services and investment among the countries, without the exception for tourism. “The AEC precisely kindles the growth of foreign travelers as expected by President Jokowi to reach 20 million within a period of four years,” said the Head of Tourism Resources Development, Ministry of Tourism, I Gede Pitana, on a one-day seminar at Garuda City, Soetta Airport Tangerang, Monday (May 11).

According to Pitana, there are 11 sectors that will be affected by the implementation of the AEC where seven sectors related to goods and industry as well as five sectors related to services. Tourism included in the service sector is considered to have been adequately prepared to engage in the AEC. “Now, our domestic market has reached 250 million people and starting from January 1, 2016, our domestic market will amount to 600 million people. It will no longer cover the Sabang to Merauke, but cover the ten country members of the ASEAN,” said Pitana. With the commencement of the AEC next year, the cross-border flow of goods and labor among the ASEAN countries will be more intensive. In the field of tourism, the Ministry of Tourism will soon certify the Indonesian workers, especially in the areas such as hotels and restaurants. “Tourism labor is obliged to be certified. Other than being mandated by the law, it is also made to make our labor recognized in the competition at the ASEAN level,” he said. Ministry of Tourism certainly wants the players of tourism in Indonesia to be better prepared in facing competition in the ASEAN level. Kerry to meet Russia’s Putin amid Ukraine, Syria tensions
SOCHI, Russia — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin with an eye on easing badly strained relations over conflicts in Ukraine and Syria. Kerry laid a wreath at a World War II memorial in the Black Sea resort city Tuesday before holding talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Later, he was to meet Putin on the brief visit, his first to Russia since May 2013 and the advent of the Ukraine crisis. The top U.S. diplomat plans to test Putin’s willingness to push pro-Russia separatists in Ukraine to comply with an increasingly fragile ceasefire agreement, according to U.S. officials traveling with him. Kerry will also seek to gauge the status of Russia’s support for embattled Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose forces have been losing ground to rebels, and press Moscow to support a political transition that could end that war, the officials said. In addition, Kerry will make the case to Putin that Russia should not proceed with its planned transfer of an advanced air defense system to Iran. Kerry’s trip comes at a time when relations between Washington and Moscow have plummeted to postCold War lows amid the disagreements over Ukraine and Syria.
In a sign of the considerable strains, the Kremlin said Monday that the Putin meeting was not confirmed, although U.S. officials insisted it was. A senior State Department official brushed aside the non-confirmation of the meeting from the Russian side, saying tersely, “We usually don’t go to Sochi to see Foreign Minister Lavrov.” On Tuesday morning, the Kremlin finally confirmed that Putin will meet with Kerry. Putin’s spokesman welcomed Kerry’s decision to travel to Russia. “We have repeatedly stated at various levels and the president has said that Russia never initiated the freeze in relations and we are always open for displays of political will for a broader dialogue,” Dmitry Peskov told journalists in Sochi. Russia’s Foreign Ministry had previewed the talks by blaming Washington for the breakdown in relations. “The Obama administration chose the path of scaling back bilateral relations, proclaimed a course of isolating Russia on the international arena and demanded that those states that traditionally follow the lead of Washington support its confrontational steps,” it said in a statement. NAJRAN, Saudi Arabia — Khatim Umm Salem’s quiet, secure life betrays no signs of the war taking place just a few miles away. In the mornings, the elderly woman sits in front of a fan outside her tiny shop in the old market of Najran. In the evenings, she listens to the Quran on the radio. She sleeps with the door unlocked, since all her neighbors know her. When asked about the war, she shrugs and says a prayer. As a widow, she receives free health care and the little she needs, 1,000 Saudi riyals or $267, from the government each month. “Sometimes I make a profit, sometimes I don’t,” says the Saudi villager, who does not know how old she is. Saudi Arabia, an oil-rich nation with about 20 million citizens, is now leading an offensive against the Shiite Houthi rebels in neighboring Yemen, who are supported by its arch-rival Iran. Yet if not for the huge propaganda posters and the state media, you would never know this was a country at war, in much the same way that life in the United States sometimes seemed distant from the conflict in Iraq. From the ancient city of Najran to the gleaming, SUV-ridden capital of Riyadh, much of the kingdom continues on its prosperous way, as reflected in AP interviews with more than two dozen people. One reason is that many citizens are already living comfortably with government help, and the new monarch, King Salman, ordered an extra month’s salary for civil servants. And for those in the pockets of poverty overshadowed by Riyadh’s gated wealth, the war is largely the
royal family’s business. In Riyadh itself, there is a vague sense of pride, of a nation finally coming into its own. The war comes at a pivotal time for Saudi Arabia: King Salman ascended to the throne in January, and he has all but appointed his son as his successor. As this generational change takes root, the country wants to project a strong image of itself as the backbone of Arab solidarity by leading Arab countries against the Houthis. It also wants to be in the line of defense of Sunnis against Iran, which has supported Shiite militias in Iraq and the government of Bashar Assad in Syria. “There’s support for the war because it came after much indignity from Iran,” according to writer and analyst Abdulmajeed al-Buluwi. He said the Yemen offensive was seen as “revenge for dignity and honor.” The offensive shows how far this country has come since the first Gulf War of 1990, when the U.S. military defended its borders. Saudi Arabia has now acquired tens of billions of dollars in military equipment. It has also emerged from the Arab Spring unscathed, unlike former powerhouse Egypt, and is now propping up Cairo’s ailing economy with aid. In return, Egypt is a key
partner against the Houthis. “Saudi Arabia is in a new stage where it is more outspoken and more aggressive,” al-Buluwi said. The tacit acceptance of the war also has to do with how it is portrayed. In a capital that is deeply religious, the country’s top ultraconservative clerics have passed a fatwa, or edict, declaring the Yemen offensive a religious duty. The kingdom’s powerful business class has rushed to express support, at least on paper. The Saudi Binladin Group, for example, took out a full-page newspaper ad that included images of F-16 fighter jets and the flag alongside King Salman saluting the armed forces. Solb Steel’s ad spelled the name of King Salman with rockets and a fighter jet, and Saudi Steel pledged “to protect each and every inch of our country, even with the last drop of our blood.” In a country with strong ties between business and politics, the support is useful for both. The governor of Riyadh issued a written notice, seen by The Associated Press, urging businesses to erect billboards praising the royal family and offering contacts of a local engineer to help with the “celebration” of the new monarch. Mirror, mirror on the wall: Smart mirrors boost sales
NEW YORK — Imagine a fitting room with a “smart” mirror that suggests jeans to go with the red shirt you brought in. It snaps a video so you can compare the image side-by-side with other colorful shirts you try on. It might even show you how the shirt will fit without you having to undress.
A handful of primarily upscale retailers, including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, are testing versions of this high-tech fitting room. And experts say the masses will be able to try these innovations at more stores in the next few years as the technology gets cheaper. This trend is a way stores aim to catch up to online rivals like Amazon.com that are able to gather information on which items shoppers browse and use that to recommend other products. The new technology that enables physical stores to collect much of the same data as online retailers raises privacy questions, but executives say customers are offered a choice and the data is protected. Stores are tapping into the significant role the often-forgotten fitting room can play in purchase decisions. While 36 percent of store browsers wind up buying something, 71 percent of shoppers who try on clothes in the fitting room become buyers, according, Paco Underhill, a retail consultant. Yet the typical fitting room isn’t always inviting: Only about 28 percent of shoppers even walk into a dressing room of a typical clothing chain, Underhill says. “The dressing room experience in many places has been close to miserable,” Underhill said. “There’s bad lighting. They’re dirty. And they have poor service.” Some companies are working to change that impression. Later this year, Big Space, a technology company, plans to test at an undisclosed clothing chain a new mirror that recognizes the gender of a customer and makes recommendations based on that. Customers also will be able to request or purchase the items directly from the mirror and have them shipped. Other technologies already are being tested in stores. WASHINGTON - Smartphones are now used in 72 percent of US homes and have become the third most owned electronics item for Americans, a survey showed Monday. The annual survey by the Consumer Electronics Association found that smartphones trail only televisions, which are in 97 percent of US households, and DVD players, in 78 percent. “A strong consumer appetite for mobile connected devices is causing some very interesting changes in the (electronics) ownership landscape,” said Steve Koenig, market research chief at the association. “These mobile devices have greatly influenced the type of content Americans consume, and given birth to new emerging tech categories such as wearable activity trackers and smart home devices that consumers are beginning to embrace more broadly.” The survey showed smartphone ownership jumped eight percentage points in the past year. Meanwhile tablet computers saw a big gain of nine points and are present in 54 percent of US households, according to the study. Laptop computers were number four on the list at 67 percent, followed by digital cameras, printers, headphones, desktop computers and tablets. Video game consoles held the number 10 spot. Among the fast-growing items were fitness trackers, up six points to 11 percent, and digital media streaming devices, rising five points to 29 percent, the association said. Russian gets 16 years for importing meth DENPASAR - A Russian woman was sentenced to 16 years in jail on Monday after being convicted of illegally importing two kilograms of methamphetamine. Magnaeva Aleksandra (26) was also fined Rp10 billion, failing to pay which her sentence will be extended for another six months. “The defendant was validly and convincingly proven guilty of committing a crime by importing more than five grams of a category I non-plant narcotic drug without any right or against the law,” chief judge of the district court in Denpasar, I Wayan Sukanila, said while reading the verdict. The judges believe that the defendant had acted against Article 113 Paragraph 2 of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics in the first charge. The sentence was lighter than the prosecutors’ demand for 17 years in jail, but the fine was the same as their demand. Among factors that worked in favor of Aleksandra and reduced her sentence were that she had been polite during the court’s session, has never been jailed before, had admitted her guilt, and pledged to not repeat her action. Aleksandra was caught by customs officers at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport on December 7, 2014, carrying narcotic drug methamphetamine weighing 2,101 grams. The defendant brought the illegal substance from Hong Kong aboard Hong Kong Airlines Flight Number 707. The customs officers saw something suspicious in the suitcase she was carrying through X-Ray screening. After opening it, they found five plastic bags containing
two kilograms of methamphetamine. The defendant, flanked by her lawyer Hari Purwanto, said she accepted the verdict. Recently, Indonesia executed eight drug convicts on death row on the island of Nusakambangang, off southern Central Java. The eight drug convicts were Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran from Australia; Raheem Agbaje Salami, Silvester Obiekwe Nwaolise alias Mustofa, and Okwudili Oyatanze from Nigeria; Zainal Abidin from Indonesia; Rodrigo Gularte from Brazil; and Martin Anderson alias Belo from Ghana. The execution of another drug convict on death row, Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso from the Philippines, was postponed because she is still needed as a witness in a human trafficking case in her country. Moreover, French citizen Serge Areski Atlaoui evaded the second round of executions as a judicial review of his case is still ongoing at the State Administrative Court (PTUN). If the PTUN rejects his appeal, he will be executed as planned, Spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office Spontana affirmed. On January 18, Indonesia executed six drug convicts on death row, including five foreigners. He added that to control the ASEAN market and to succeed in the free market competition, Bali is expected to accentuate and preserve its traditional cultures. “It would be much better if Bali focuses on its traditional cultures. Unlike the other types of MICE tourism, incentive tourism is usually conducted purely for entertainment, rather than professional or educational purposes. MICE tourism usually consists of a well-planned agenda centered around a particular theme, such as a hobby, a profession, or an educational topic.

To note, the demand for marigold being fairly easily grown in Bali is quite high. At least, Bali needs 27 tons each day. In addition to the need for Hindu religious ceremony, it is also often used for welcoming garland at the airport, use at Vihara and it is even now developed into marigold tea products. The product is developed by one of the businessmen from Germany, where it is now only Ukraine has been familiar with this marigold tea product. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dazzling ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is a can’t miss thrill
The silences in “Mad Max: Fury Road” are unsettling. The moments are few and infrequent, but it’s not until the fiery roar of the engines and the thrashing of the guitars are suddenly stripped away that you can fully feel how deeply the film has flooded your being. The theater — and your heart — pulsates with the lack as you recover and wait for more. It’s in the silences that director George Miller’s singular genius becomes evident, and for good reason: It’s the only time the film allows you to breathe. Thirty years after Miller gave the world “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,” he’s returned to his own postapocalyptic world and created an exceptional, fearless and poetic masterpiece that’s primed to become a modern classic. In this anarchic world, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) is a lone wolf. As he tells us in the prologue, he’s a man whose past traumas have reduced him to a single instinct: Survival. Max’s only humanity seems to be in his haunting visions of a child asking for protection. Otherwise, he’s gone full animal. As Max, Hardy doesn’t so much speak. He grunts and growls and scurries for freedom. But Max quickly gets entangled with others when the war lords of the wasteland put a fish hook in his neck and strap him on as a hood ornament to chase after the rogue Furiosa (Charlize Theron). She’s managed to escape the Citadel in a powerful, lumbering War Rig with the wives of their tyrannical leader Immortan Joe (Hugh KeaysByrne, who also played Toecutter in “Mad Max”). Much of the film is spent with the women, and eventually Max, on the rig as they race across the desert away from the painted fighters on their tail. Furiosa, seeking redemption for untold sins, has made it her purpose to bring the wives to “the green place” — an idyllic haven she was taken from as a child. The wives, played by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton and Zoë Kravitz, are all ethereal, spiritual beauties. Though physically perfect and visibly unmarked by the

harsh conditions of the land, as Immortan Joe’s property, their collective trauma is more insidious. When they fight back and jump in to help their more grizzled and skilled travel mates, they do so without fear or hesitation. Looking almost sturdy in comparison, it is Theron who steals the show as the steely-eyed, one-armed, and aptly named Furiosa. Her fierce and unwavering commitment to her self-assigned mission propels the sparse narrative and invigorates those around her, when death often seems like not just the easier option, but probably the more appealing one, too. Painted and scarred to the point of disguise, Nicholas Hoult is also a standout as Nux, an unlucky, but endearingly devoted Immortan Joe foot soldier who delivers on one of the few actual character arcs of the film. Ultimately, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is almost aggressively anti-character, though. The dialogue is beautifully lean and purposeful, allowing what does exist to have maximum impact. For Theron and Hardy, their triumphant performances are is in their eyes. In the end, it is the bright, fresh visuals juxtaposed with the impressively choreographed and always surprising action and pacing that make the film. Cinematographer John Seale (“The English Patient”) has infused the barren landscape with a feast of striking, saturated colors, while Miller has made a two-hour race across the desert into a truly riveting must-see and see again. As we drive full speed into another summer (and half-decade) of sequels and interconnected universes, Miller has reminded us that blockbusters have the potential to not only be art, but radically visionary — even the fourth in a series. What a lovely day, indeed. “Mad Max: Fury Road,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of violence throughout, and for disturbing images.” Running time: 120 minutes. LOS ANGELES — Justin Bieber has completed most of the terms of his probation in a vandalism case filed after the pop singer threw eggs at his former neighbors’ house, a probation report filed Monday says. The performer has completed 12 anger management sessions and has signed up to work with a South Los Angeles group to improve its facilities, according to the report. Relief teams from around the world are still working to provide water, food and medical assistance to Nepalis following the quake. On Tuesday at the main hospital in Kathmandu, patients injured in last month’s quake were being wheeled out in wheelchairs. People could be seen frantically calling their families as medical attendants rushed to set up tents in the parking lot. The capital was filled with the sound of car horns as desperate residents rushed to get back home to check on loved ones.
