Simpson to a Las Vegas courtroom on Monday will remind Americans of a tragedy that became a national obsession and in the process changed the country’s attitude toward the justice system, the media and celebrity. His 1995 trial is the stuff of legends, the precipitous fall of a Hall of Fame football player from the pinnacle of adoration to a murder defendant who, although acquitted of killing his ex-wife and her friend, was never absolved in the

public mind. He is arguably the most famous American ever charged with murder, and his “trial of the century” cast him in the role of the accused — no longer the superhero-turned-movie actor held up to young people as an example of achievement. But less is remembered about the 2008 Las Vegas trial that sent Simpson to prison for a bizarre hotel room robbery in which the celebrity defendant said he just wanted to take back personal memorabilia that he claimed was stolen from him. When he comes to court on Monday, it

is that conviction for armed robbery and kidnapping that will be before a Nevada judge. Simpson is seeking freedom in what lawyers often call a “Hail Mary motion,” a writ of habeas corpus. It claims he had such bad representation that his conviction should be reversed and a new trial ordered. Most defendants lose these motions, but in this case nobody is taking bets on the outcome. “Nothing is the same when O.J. is involved,” said Loyola Law School professor Laurie Levenson, who observed Simpson’s Los Angeles trial. “An O.J. case is never like any other case.”

‘Django Unchained’ back in Chinese movie theaters Associated Press WRiter

BEIJING — Quentin Tarantino’s violent slave-revenge movie “Django Unchained” returned to Chinese theaters on Sunday, about a month after it was pulled on opening day for unspecified “technical reasons.” The rare suspension order on April 11 by the movie’s importer, China Film Group Corp., led to speculation that the Hollywood film had run afoul of Chinese censors despite weeks of promotion. “Django Unchained” reportedly already had some violent scenes cut and had been cleared by China’s rigorous censors, who generally remove violence, sex and politically edgy content. “The new version is one minute shorter than the previous one,” said a manager at a UME Cineplex cinema in Beijing.

The manager, who gave only his surname, Wang, speculated that a nude scene might have been cut. Calls to China’s regulatory agency, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, were not answered. “Django Unchained,” which won two Oscars, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a plantation owner and Jamie Foxx as a freed slave who trains to become a bounty hunter and demands his wife’s freedom before the U.S. Civil War.

China has become the second-biggest movie market behind the U.S. with sales of $2.7 billion last year, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. While Hollywood is eager for a slice of this market, directors are having to accept the altering of their movies if they show China in a bad light, or to make them suitable for all ages in the absence of a classification system in China. Earlier this year, some Chinese moviegoers were left confused because of awkward cuts to the James Bond feature “Skyfall” that included unflattering references to the sex trade in the Chinese territory of Macau. Then “Cloud Atlas” was shown in Chinese cinemas minus 38 minutes that included gay and straight love scenes.

DENPASAR - Bali police were securing around 80 illegal immigrants from the Badung Straits or about one mile from the Port of Benoa, Denpasar on Sunday. “Around 5:00 am, our officers doing routine patrol.

Due to suspicious looks, our officers securing the boat and passengers,” said Head of Public Relations Bali Regional Police, Commissioner General Hariadi in Denpasar. According to him, dozens of illegal immigrants were riding on a traditional wooden boat with no name and not

equipped with a travel document. “On the ship there were two crews, but they cannot show the document and not one of those who can gave statement,” he said. In addition, not all illegal passengers can speak English, so it was difficult for the police and Immigration to identify

them. Until now the police do not know the purpose and origin of those illegal immigrants. Community information mentioned illegal immigrants consisting of men and women as well as a number of children came from Turkey, Syria, and Iran headed to Australia.

A total of six windmills used for wind power plant (PLTB) built on Bukit Mundi, Klumpu village, Nusa Penida, Klungkung, have turned dormant since it was completed in 2007. In order to equalize the development and welfare of people, in Karangasem needs to be opened wider job opportunities. Village markets have to be empowered. If necessary, it should be established an integrated market so that people’s access to market their agricultural products and livestock will be increasingly widespread. A legislator of the Karangasem House, I Nyoman Sadra, said that to equalize the development and welfare, they should be provided with job opportunities. All this time, there were much hidden and obvious unemployment as well as many poor people and beggars because no job opportunities were available at the village. Not to mention, the area remained barren and people regularly faced clean water crisis. At that time, of the seven units established, three units respectively had the capacity of 85 kilowatts (KW), while the four other units had 80 KW. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Cars made in Brazil are deadly Associated Press Writer

SAO PAULO — The cars roll endlessly off the local assembly lines of the industry’s biggest automakers, more than 10,000 a day, into the eager hands of Brazil’s new middle class. The shiny new Fords, Fiats, and Chevrolets tell the tale of an economy in full bloom that now boasts the fourth largest auto market in the world. What happens once those vehicles hit the streets, however, is shaping up as a national tragedy, experts say, with thousands of Brazilians dying every year in auto accidents that in many cases shouldn’t have proven fatal. The culprits are the cars themselves, produced with weaker welds, scant safety features and inferior materials compared to similar models manufactured for U.S. and European consumers, say experts and engineers inside the industry. Four of Brazil’s five bestselling cars failed their independent crash tests. Unsafe cars, coupled with the South American nation’s often dangerous driving conditions, have resulted in a Brazilian death rate from passenger car accidents that is nearly four times that of the United States, according to an Associated Press analysis of Brazilian Health Ministry data on deaths compared to the size of each country’s car fleet. In fact, the two countries are moving in opposite directions on survival rates — the U.S. recorded 40 percent fewer fatalities from car wrecks in 2010 compared with a decade before. In Brazil, the number killed rose 72 percent, according to the latest available data. Dr. Dirceu Alves, of Abramet, a Brazilian association of doctors that

specializes in treating traffic accident victims, said poorly built cars take an unnecessary toll. “The gravity of the injuries arriving at the hospitals is just ugly,” he said, “injuries that should not be occurring.” Automakers in Brazil point out that their cars meet the nation’s safety laws. Some said they build even tougher cars for the country because of its poorly maintained roadways and rejected any notion that cost-cutting in production leads to fatalities. But the country’s few safety activists perceive a deadly double standard, with automakers earning more money from selling cars that offer drivers fewer safeguards — a worrisome gap for new middle-class households, whose surging spending power has outpaced consumer protections taken for granted in more developed countries. The problem extends beyond Brazil, with economic forecasts showing the majority of global growth in auto sales taking place in emerging-market nations as the world’s auto fleet doubles to 1.5 billion by 2020. “Entry-level cars in Brazil are incredibly dangerous, it can’t be denied. The death rate from accidents is far too high,” said Maria Ines Dolci, coordinator of the Rio de Janeiro-based consumer defense group Proteste.

NEW ORLEANS — Coin enthusiasts are getting a glimpse of more than $100 million worth of rare money, including some of the crown jewels of money collecting at the National Money Show in New Orleans. Among the attractions are two exceedingly rare 1913 Liberty Head nickels valued at more than $5 million. One was hidden in a Virginia closet for four decades before selling at auction last month for $3.17 million. The other was frequently carried in the pocket of a former owner from Wisconsin so he could show it to strangers. The show runs through Saturday. The Liberty Head nickel, first minted in 1883, was replaced with a design featuring an American Indian

and a buffalo in 1913. No 1913 Liberty Heads are known to have been released for circulation, so the five known to exist have been shrouded in mystery in numismatic circles. Other highlights include an 1804 silver dollar valued at more than $3 million and an example of the first coin federally authorized by President George Washington — a 1792 half disme, an early spelling of the word dime. Head of Third Sub Directorate of the Criminal Research, GAPC Harry Haryadi, last Saturday (11/5) confirmed that they are a separate group to those have captured before and this time Zainal is the head. It was explained this was possible due to PC Gunawan and team’s hard work. Before captured, there was no stop in developing it and police started to find clues then raided a lodge house around Denpasar where huge knife, screw driver and keys were found. A number of witnesses were also checked and stated that the equipments were owned by Zainal who is known to be in Lombok. The team was careful when coming in to the village where Zainal and Supar stayed in making sure they don’t escape one of them by making Zainal get out of his place to Dusun Prau Banjar, Kali Anyar Village, Terara, East Lombok around 4.45 pm local time on Thursday. Zainal who lives at Dusun Genjer, Sukadana Village, then surrender and admitted to have robbed with Suparlan. They then captured Suparlan at his house in Dusun Kali Anyar around 6.30 pm local time. While interrogated, the two admitted to have robbed in 32 places and when asked to show it around Perenan, Mengwi, Badung, Zainal tried to escape yet with three warning shots did not work, Zainal was shot on the foot. He was then brought to Trijata Bali Police Hospital to be treated. They also admitted to have robbed laptops, camera, Ringgit cash, Rupiah cash, gold and more which have been sold then income shared. “We are still investigating it further and to find other robbers,” Haryadi stated. Taiwan ultimatum to Philippines over fisherman’s death

The government of Taiwan has given the Philippines until Wednesday to apologise for the death of a Taiwanese fisherman whose vessel was fired on by the Philippine coastguard. Taiwan is also demanding compensation and the arrest of those responsible. It has warned the Philippines of diplomatic and economic measures if it does not respond positively. The Philippine coastguard acknowledged that it had fired at the boat to “disable” its machinery. It says that it was acting in self-defence.

Demands Fisherman Hung Shih-cheng, 65, was shot dead on Thursday when the coastguard vessel opened fire on his boat. He was in waters southeast of Taiwan and north of the Philippines, an area considered by both countries to be their exclusive economic zone. Hours after his remains and vessel were returned to Taiwan, the president’s office and the foreign ministry issued a series of demands to the Philippines.

AYLESBURY — Finance leaders from the Group of Seven leading industrial economies say Japan’s stimulus policies are directed at boosting its economy out of a two-decade period of stagnation, not an attempt to drive down its currency to make Japan’s exports more competitive. At the conclusion of a two-day meeting of leading financial representatives from the G-7 countries — the U.S., Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Canada and the U.K. — host British Treasury chief George Osborne said there was a formal acknowledgement that each member needed to secure their own countries’ growth by balancing austerity measures with growth-enhancing policies. The officials also agreed on the importance of finding measures to deal with failing banks and working collectively to stop companies and individuals from dodging their tax bills. “The will is still there to reduce the deficits but there is certainly a change of tone,” said Pierre Moscovici, France’s finance minister at the conclusion of the two-day summit at a country house around 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of London. Japan, the world’s number 3 economy has been in focus in recent months. The new government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has promised aggressive steps to restart the country’s postwar boom, which effectively ground to a halt in the early 1990s. As part of that effort, the Bank of Japan plans to double the amount of cash circulating in the Japanese economy and held as bank reserves. One of the offshoots of the policies has been a dramatic fall in the value of the yen. On Thursday, the dollar rose above 100 yen for the first time in over four years. The yen has weakened by more than 20 percent against the dollar since October, when it was trading at around 78 yen. As well as potentially boosting economic growth by making its exports more competitive, the flipside of a lower yen is that it can also stoke inflation by increasing the price of imports. For a country that’s seen prices fall for much of the past 15 years, that’s important. The rapid slide in the value of the yen has sparked fears of a “currency war” — where countries use their exchange rates as an economic weapon.

If other countries respond to the falling yen by debasing their currencies, Japan will be back at square one and the world economy could suffer. Sharp fluctuations in the value of currencies can hurt business confidence and investment. So far, the argument presented by Japanese officials that it has been targeting monetary stimulus and not its exchange rate has been accepted by Japan’s G-7 partners. Osborne, who hosted the two days of informal discussions, said the G-7 countries agreed to make sure that “policies are oriented towards domestic objectives.” In a rare development, the G-7 didn’t actually issue a communique at the conclusion of its deliberations. However, Osborne said the previous communique “was a successful statement and one that has been held to” — a clear reference to Japan. A senior U.S. Treasury official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was a good discussion about what’s going on in Japan and that Japanese officials went into some detail about how the new policy was helping to boost domestic demand. The official reaffirmed the importance that Japan continues to meet previous commitments, a point made a day earlier by Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew who said he was monitoring developments. Analysts said it’s difficult for the G-7 to make any concerns over Japan public because other countries, such as the U.S. and Britain, have been accused of debasing their respective currencies over the past few years through their monetary stimulus programs. All participants at the meeting said boosting economic growth was a priority now that financial markets appear to have calmed down, especially with regard to the debt crisis that has gripped the 17-country Eurozone. Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank, said the bank was working out what it can do to make sure banks lend more. Though banks have managed to reduce their debt and bolster their capital reserves and have benefited from liquidity offers from the ECB, lending remains stuck at relatively low levels — particularly to smaller and medium sized enterprises.

HANGZHOU - Alibaba chief Jack Ma stepped down Friday before a potential initial public offering as the Chinese online retail giant announced a $294 million stake purchase in digital mapping firm AutoNavi. Alibaba, the world’s largest online retailer, said it bought a 28 percent stake in Nasdaq-listed AutoNavi, its second big purchase in as many weeks. The deal follows Alibaba’s $586 million purchase of an 18 percent stake in China’s dominant microblog provider Sina Weibo, a separate transaction that was announced on April 29. The moves come before an expected initial public offering by Alibaba, which analysts say could value the group at between $60 billion and $100 billion, prompting comparisons with Facebook’s blockbuster IPO. At a company event in Hangzhou city, 48-year-old Ma handed over the reins of the company to Lu Zhaoxi -- previously executive vice president -- reaffirming his decision announced four months ago to step down as chief executive officer. “From tomorrow I will have a new life and life will be my job. I sincerely ask everyone to support Lu Zhaoxi like you have supported me and trust Lu like you have trusted me,” Ma told 30,000 employees and clients at the event. Lu said he would carry on the mission of Alibaba by making the company transparent and responsible. JIMBARAN - PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk. would procure 24 new aircraft to revitalize its fleet, its president director Emirsyah Satar said. “The procurement of the new aircraft that will increase our fleet is part of our efforts to increase our flight frequencies,” he said. The state-owned airline’s flight frequencies are now recorded at 450 covering various destinations at home and abroad. By 2015 the number will be increased to 1,000, he said. The increase would make the number of aircraft owned by Garuda Indonesia to reach 194 units by 2015 from presently 106 including those used by its subsidiary, Citilink. “Four Boeing 777-300ERs, three Airbus A330s, 10 Boeing 737-800NGs and seven Bombarider CRJ100 Nextgens would be added to the fleet,” he said. Garuda plans to open new routes and increase domestic as well as overseas flight frequencies. The new international routes to be opened are routes to Brisbane, London, Australia and Japan. “We could not as yet tell the fixed data but early in August we will open the DenpasarBrisbane route and in the middle of this year Denpasar to two big cities in the country,” he said. Garuda Indonesia at present serves 35 flights from Denpasar every day, 13 of them to Jakarta. Through its hub in Denpasar it serves flights to Australia, Japan, Korea, Sydney and other domestic destinations.

CAIRO — In his first comments to the media by since he was detained more than two years ago, Egypt’s former President Hosni Mubarak said he is dismayed at the country’s state of affairs and particularly the plight of the poor. The 85-year old Mubarak spoke to Al-Watan newspaper after a session of his retrial for his role in the killing of hundreds of protesters during the popular uprising that forced him to step down in 2011. His comments were published Sunday, a day after he appeared in the dock on a hospital gurney, alongside his two sons. The trial was adjourned for June 8. Mubarak told the newspaper reporter he was “very, very sad” for impoverished Egyptians. He said he was also dismayed by the state of the economy, the industrial cities built during his nearly 30 years in office, and the country’s lack of security. Mubarak also said that it was too early to judge his elected successor, the Islamist Mohammed Morsi, saying that he has a heavy burden to deal with. The comments were Mubarak’s first to a reporter since he was ousted, and his first public statements since his captivity. Mubarak was detained two years ago and put on trial for complicity in the killing of nearly 900 protesters in the first days of the revolt against him. He has since been hospitalized, sentenced to life in prison and then granted a retrial. He is also accused in a number of corruption cases, where prosecutors are investigating his family wealth amid claims he amassed a formidable fortune while in power. His two sons are also on trial on corruption charges. In his comments, Mubarak also said he feared for the country’s future and its poor should tough economic measures be imposed in order to acquire a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund. The “Martyrs of Otranto” are 813 Italians who were slain in the southern Italian city in 1480 for defying demands by Turkish invaders to renounce Christianity. The pope also gave Colombia its first saint: a nun, Laura of St. Catherine of Siena Montoya y Upegui, who journeyed with five other women by horseback in 1914 into the forests to be a teacher and spiritual guide to indigenous people. Colombia’s president, Juan Manuel Santos Calderon, was among VIPs attending the ceremony. The first pontiff from South America also canonized another Latin American woman. Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala, a Mexican who dedicated herself to nursing the sick, helped Catholics avoid persecution during a government crackdown of the faith in the 1920s. Also known as Mother Lupita, she hid the Guadalajara archbishop in an eye clinic for more than a year after fearful local Catholic families refused to shelter him. INDONESIA Rp95 trillion in subsidy saved by raising fuel price Antara

JAKARTA - The government would save up to Rp95 trillion in fuel subsidy if it raised the price of subsidized oil fuel as planned, an economist said. Wijayanto Samirin, the executive director of Paramadina Public Policy Institute, said here on Sunday that the government has indicated to raise the price of subsidized gasoline to Rp6,500 per liter from Rp4,500 at present. He described the price of Rp6,500 per liter of gasoline as ideal. “The price of Rp6,500 is quite ideal. The impact of the price hike on inflation could still be tolerated,” Wijayanto said. Earlier President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the price hike is needed to help reduce the deficit in the state budget, but the price would be raised only when compensation for the country’s poor is made available. Compensation for the low income people would needs approval from the

House of Representatives. Wijayanto said the subsidy could be even saved up to Rp100 trillion as consumption could decline as result of the price hike. “Ideally, half of the fund to be saved would be given back to the people through scholarship, healthcare, cheap rice and direct cash aid programs,” he said. The rest could be used to finance development projects, her added. The government hopes to discuss the proposed compensation at a meeting with the House of Representatives toward the end of this month . “We have no figure yet for the compensation budget as it is still to be discussed with the House of Representatives,” Minister for National Development Planning Armida Alisjahbana said.

JAYAPURA - Amnesty International has urged Indonesia to probe the deaths of three Papua independence activists who were gunned down as they protested 50 years of Jakarta’s control over the restive region. Two men were killed last week at an anti-government rally in Sorong, western Papua, and a woman died in hospital on Tuesday from gunshot wounds sustained at the protest, according to Amnesty and witnesses. Those in attendance said police had opened fire on the peaceful demonstration. However, police deny shooting the activists and say they fired over protesters’ heads in retaliation for being attacked. Indonesian authorities must “set up a comprehensive and independent investigation into allegations of unnecessary use of firearms by

security forces during the protests,” said Isabelle Arradon, Amnesty’s Asia-Pacific deputy director. “Failure to take action will send a message that the security forces in Papua operate above the law,” she added in a statement late Thursday. United Nations human rights chief Navi Pillay also expressed concern over the deaths. The shootings happened on April 30 as protesters gathered to mark 50 years since Papua was placed under Indonesian control by the UN, witnesses told an AFP journalist. Isak Klaibin, the brother of the female victim Salomina Klaibin, 37, who was also at the demonstration, said protesters were gathering peacefully when police opened fire. He told AFP at the scene: “There was going to be no raising of the (separatist) flag, nor reading of documents about the (rebel) movement” at the service.

“But as we were gathering, we were surprised to suddenly hear gunshots.” Abner Malagawak, 22, and Thomas Blesia, 28, died at the scene. However, Papua police spokesman Gede Sumerta Jaya denied police had shot the activists, saying: “The shots were aimed upwards, it was self-defence because (we were) attacked.” Jaya said Salomina Klaibin was a lieutenant in the separatist Free Papua Movement (OPM), and her brother was part of a local separatist group. He said police confiscated rifles and ammunition from the scene of the protest. Violence occasionally erupts in Papua -- the western half of New Guinea island in Indonesia’s extreme east -- where separatists have for decades fought a low-level insurgency on behalf of the mostly ethnic Melanesian population.

The plane, which was carrying fertilizer, crashed into the area of PT SIP at 11.30 am about three minutes after taking off, according to Lampung Regional Police Spokesman Adj. Snr Comr Sulistyaningsih here on Saturday. “The plane was heavily damaged,” she said.

The pilot was identified as Muhammad Adipura (47), a resident of the Bogor City, West Java. He died on the scene with injuries in the head and broken leg. “Police are inspecting the location, evacuating the victim and investigating the causes of the accident,” said Sulistyaningsih.

FA Cup winners Wigan, Whelan target top flight survival

LONDON - Success or failure in sport is never down to just one person but it is no exaggeration to say that without chairman Dave Whelan, Wigan Athletic would not have won the FA Cup for the first time on Saturday or spent the last eight years as a Premier League club. Whelan put Wigan on the soccer map and believes they can also keep their place in the top flight after their stunning 1-0 Cup final victory over Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday. Wigan, who have battled relegation for the last three seasons, are a club from a small northern town, situated close to Manchester and Liverpool. Overshadowed by both those soccer hotbeds for decades, Wigan also live in the shadow of their more illustrious rugby league neighbours, Wigan Warriors, with whom they now groundshare. Whelan is a born battler and, unusually for a chairman, was in the limelight almost as much as manager Roberto Martinez and his players during Saturday’s FA Cup final victory. At the age of 23, Whelan broke his leg playing for Blackburn Rovers in the 1960 FA Cup final against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley, an injury that ended his top flight career and his ambitions of playing for England. “It is a dream come true of course,” he told reporters after Saturday’s win, “and especially after the heartbreak of what happened here in 1960 it’s especially moving. It just proves what you can achieve if you have a dream and believe it can come true.” Whelan was sold to Fourth Division side Crewe Alexandra two years after his leg break, but with the compensation he got from Blackburn following his injury he bought a grocery business, which would prove to be the start of a hugely successful nationwide business career that turned him into a multi-millionaire. ‘REMARKABLE DAY’

He bought Wigan in 1995 when they were in the Third Division and victory on Saturday was the crowning glory of his footballing career. “It is the most remarkable day, and I have to say we thoroughly deserved it. Roberto is a top manager who did a wonderful job for this club as a player and now as a manager.

“When the day comes for him to tell me he wants to leave for a bigger club I will understand that, of course I will, but right now he is our manager and we have two vital games to play to stay in the Premier League, so I am not opening the champagne yet.” Martinez has been touted as a possible replacement for Everton manager David Moyes, who is leaving Goodison Park to replace Alex Ferguson at Manchester United next season. Wigan are now looking to avoid adding an unwanted footnote to FA Cup folklore. Five clubs, including Manchester City in 1926, have appeared in the FA Cup final, lost and also been relegated. None of them have won the FA Cup and gone down. Wigan want to avoid becoming the first. They play at Arsenal on Tuesday and host Aston Villa in their last Premier League match next Sunday. Currently they are 18th in the Premier League on 35 points and realistically cannot afford to drop any more points to avoid the drop. Ben Watson, who came off the bench to score the winning goal on Saturday, believes Wigan can survive. “We went to Arsenal last season and won there, and after this victory over City I think anything is possible for Wigan Athletic,” he told reporters after the game. “Yes we are elated to have won the Cup and yes we will be in the Europa League next season for the first time, but we have to survive in the Premier League, and with the chairman we have and the manager we have, we are capable of doing that.” When Whelan bought Wigan, who had only been elected to the Football League in 1978, he promised he would get them into the top flight, a notion that seemed fanciful at the time but one they achieved by 2005. He funded the construction of a new stadium to replace their old Springfield Park ground in 1999 and brought in some fine players to the club over the last 18 years as they rose through the divisions. It would be a terrible irony if, at the time of their greatest success, they fail to avoid the drop.
