Kanye West urges Grammy overhaul to award top-sellers

NEW YORK - Kanye West on Wednesday urged an overhaul of the Grammys to award commercially successful musicians, even as the rapper toned down his criticism of this year’s surprise winner Beck. The famously mercurial West stole the spotlight at the music industry’s awards night Sunday when he rushed toward the stage as Beck -- the innovative rocker who has enjoyed critical acclaim, if a niche following, for two decades --accepted the Album of the Year award for his lush, melancholy “Morning Phase.” Soon after the broadcast, West said that Beck should “respect artistry” and give his award to superstar Beyonce for her self-titled album, one of her most intense works which features the ode to marital bliss “Drunk In Love” sung with husband Jay-Z. West on Wednesday insisted that he did not mean to insult Beck, calling the 44-year-old Los Angeles alternative rocker “one of the nicest guys and one of the most respected musicians in the game.” But West, alluding to Beyonce’s wellreceived Gospel-inspired performance at the live-broadcast ceremony, accused the Grammys of “capitalizing off the amount of views Beyonce gets for them.” “There has to be some level of respect for the people that they have there to sell advertising for them,” he told radio host Ryan Seacrest. West, the husband of the thrice-married socialite Kim Kardashian, compared the Grammys to spouses who “get a divorce with us every year, and break our dreams every year.” The rapper threatened to boycott future Grammys if the Recording Academy, which runs the awards, did not reform the voting process to recognize commercial success. West has won 21 Grammys, making him one of the most awarded artists ever. He performed at the latest Grammys in a collaboration with ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and R&B singer Rihanna. West also faulted past Album of the Year

awards to French electronic duo Daft Punk and Canadian indie rockers Arcade Fire. But West, who is African American, regretted that his initial remarks were interpreted as implying racism by the Grammys. “It’s not a black or white thing at all. It’s not always me standing up for a black artist,” he said. West raised controversy after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 for charging that then president George W. Bush “doesn’t care about black people.” At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, West grabbed the microphone from winner Taylor Swift to say that Beyonce was better. West said that Swift -- who has enjoyed massive commercial success with her most recent album “1989” -- had supported his intervention at the Grammys and announced, with little detail, that the two planned to record together. LOS ANGELES — The official afterparty for the Grammy Awards was a tribute concert for Stevie Wonder. Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Pharrell and Annie Lennox were part of the all-star acts who paid tribute to the piano-playing icon at a concert Tuesday night in Los Angeles, just days after the Grammys aired. Beyonce kicked off the taped event presented by the Recording Academy by walking up an isle of the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live and singing “Fingertips.” Ed Sheeran joined the diva on “Master Blaster (Jammin’)” and Gary Clark Jr. jumped in on “Higher Ground.” The night was full of collaborative highlights: A trio of India.Arie, Janelle Monae and Jill Scott shined like a seasoned girl group on “As”; Pharrell and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder stretched their voices as high as possible; Babyface and Ariana Grande were soft on “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours”; and Wonder’s daughter, Aisha, sang the song written about her — “Isn’t She Lovely” — with R&B singer Ne-Yo. “I love you, Daddy,” Aisha said, now standing next to her father who sat in the front row. The rest of the night played like a love letter to Wonder. Gaga said she remembered putting in her first CD into the CD player — a Wonder disc. “You truly are the reason that I’m here today. Thank you so much,” said 28-year-old Gaga, who earned a standing ovation with her rendition of “I Wish.”

Andrea Bocelli, who was impressive when he sang “I Just Called to Say I Love You,” told Wonder and the crowd he assumed the song was “simple” to sing, but learned it wasn’t. “I did my best just to say I love you,” the Italian tenor said, as the crowd was in awe. Other performers included John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, the Band Perry and Tony Bennett, who delivered the goods on “For Once in My Life,” and Lennox, who was top notch during “My Cherie Amour.” Even some of the presenters were musical: Tyler Perry sounded like a promising singer after delivering some of Wonder’s lyrics, and actor-comedian Craig Robinson, who is also musician, also sang before he introduced a video of Wonder’s silly side. “Y’all clapped when Tyler sang,” Robinson said to laughs. Jay Z, Jamie Foxx, Maya Rudolph, Gladys Knight, Big Sean and Berry Gordy attended the concert, dubbed “Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life — An All-Star Grammy Salute.” It will air Monday on CBS. Wonder ended the night with a medley of his songs and was joined onstage with all of the performers and presenters for “Happy Birthday,” which happened after a video played showing Wonder campaigning to have the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. become a national holiday. DENPASAR - Two Australian drug smugglers on death row in Indonesia will be transferred Bishop. The head of Bali’s prosecutors office Momock Bambang Samiarso said the time of their transfer remained undecided, but authorities would like it to be done “as soon as possible”. “The sooner the better,” he told reporters in Bali. He did not say where they would be sent. But Indonesian officials previously said they plan to execute the Australians, as well as several other foreigners on death row, on

Nusakambangan Island, which is off the main island of Java and home to a high-security prison. Six drug convicts were executed on the island last month. Samiarso said the prisoners’ families -- who this week travelled to Jakarta to beg Widodo for mercy -- would be notified of the transfer, which is likely to occur by air under heavy police guard. Indonesia has already informed Australia they intend to proceed with the executions, despite public appeals from Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Foreign Minister Julie

Tourism players assess admission fee of Nusa Penida marine conservation

Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai flooded MANGUPURA – Heavy rains on Wednesday (Feb 11) caused flooding on a number of roads in South Badung. Around 2.00 PM water levels reached knee height along 150 meters of Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai. Because drainage was not functioning optimally, the rainwater stagnated, failing to be channeled to the mangrove forest to the East of the Bypass. According to local residents, the water stagnated for about 2 hours, forcing the Nusa Dua to Denpasar traffic to be diverted via the toll road. The water finally began receding around 4PM. The poor drainage that caused Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai to flood meant that traffic was backed up from Denpasar to Nusa Dua and surrounding areas, especially in the areas of Mumbul, Bualu, Nusa Dua and South Kuta. When asked to confirm these facts, Wayan Sueca Astawa, staff member of the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency, said that the flooding was in

fact, caused by clogged drains. “Tomorrow, the mud on the road will be cleared, in the mean time the water on the road is being diverted into the river so that vehicles can use Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai” he said. The Head of the subdistrict of South Kuta, Wayan Wirya agreed that the flooding was a problem, saying: “Yeah, the flooding is pretty severe. No sedan would dare to attempt to pass through those waters”. Wirya also agreed that the flooding happened due to poor drainage in the area: “Rainwater stagnated on the road, because it could not flow through the

drains”. Despite the flooding, some motorists still attempted to cross the small temporary river on the Bypass, with one car even becoming stranded in a fairly deep pool of water. Head of the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency, I.B. Surya Suamba, did not dismiss the poor drainage as the cause of flooding. However, he added that responsibility lay with the central government, not with the Badung County government. “The flood was cause by the less than optimal drainage system of the national road” he said. SEMARAPURA - After being dormant, local government finally addressed the determination of admission fee to the Marine Conservation Area (KKP) Nusa Penida. The executive invited tourism players in Nusa Penida to conduct a review on the admission fee, Wednesday (Feb 11). Unfortunately, no agreement could be reach about the amount of the admission fee. A number of tourism players were present in the Praja Mandala meeting room of Klungkung County. They included the Association of Water Recreation (Gawistri), Awali, Bali Hai and Bounty. The meeting was led in person by Deputy Regent of Klungkung, Made Kasta, accompanied by the acting Regional Secretary of Klungkung government, I.B. Sudarsana, First Assistant Wayan Tika and the Head of Culture and Tourism Agency Wayan Sujana. Deputy Regent Kasta conveyed the presence of tourism players was expected to provide input in determining the admission fee to the Marine Conservation Area in Nusa Penida. In addition, it also jointly preserved the marine biota of Nusa Penida. In the meeting, a consultant of the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) Nusa Penida incorporated in the KKP Working Group, Dewa Kadek Wira Sanjaya, conveyed that with the KKP status, the waters of Nusa Penida had been protected and managed by a zoning system in order to realize the management of fish resources and environment in a sustainable manner. Other than managing the marine potential of Nusa Penida, the KKP management also protected the marine life from the threat of destruction. However, to realize the program was required considerable budget. Thus, to establish an independent and

sustainable funding mechanism in the KKP Nusa Penida, it was necessary to collect marine tourism admission fee to the Marine Conservation Area. He emphasized the basic principle of the lovers of natural resources at coastal and marine areas should be willing to contribute through a levy in the resource conservation and management. It was said the presence of the KKP to have received a support from wider community. Based on the result of CTC survey, as much as 95 percent of the community considered the existence of the KKP in Nusa Penida important. Even, a total of 83 percent of the community was ready to be charged with KKP tariff and 85 percent of the community was willing to pay for each arrival. “Other than aiming for business planning, the KKP management also aims to protect and conserve marine resources and coastal biodiversity for the sustainability of livelihoods, either for tourism entrepreneurs, communities, fishermen, farmers or seaweed,” he said. Acting Regional Secretary of Klungkung government, Ida Bagus Sudarsana, delivered the meeting was only at the stage of socialization to tourism players that the preservation of the KKP should be supported with adequate funding through the imposition of charges. The amount of initial levy had been designed at IDR 75,000 per tourist increasing from IDR 7,000. However, the amount needed to be further discussed with tourism players. Thus, there would be conformity between the responsibility of maintaining the KKP Nusa Penida and tourism activity. On February 14 is a loving moment known as the Valentine’s Day celebrated around the globe. The celebration originating from the West is even then celebrated in various places. Hotels, resorts, villas and restaurant are some of them. Actually Bali has been already familiar with Valentine’s Day since the days of our ancestors. By and large, the celebration is realized in the form of yadnya (sacrifice) and it is carried out each day. So, the meaning of Valentine’s Day in Bali is wider. It is not restricted to the beloved humans but also to God and nature. Related to this matter, the General Manager of Candi Beach Resort & Spa, I Ketut Wirya Negara, as a tourism player agreed that Valentine’s Day for Bali tourism people had been already stated in the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana and Tat Tvam Asi. “When hotels in Bali also celebrate the western tradition, it is legitimate provided that it is within reasonable limit and positive,” he explained. Valentine’s Day celebration at hotel, said Wirya Negara, was an affectionate expression of the hotel management and staff to guests. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

It’s not. Don’t let them do that to you.” Another chimed in: “Why is she white in this picture.” Some negative comments were later removed. The magazine said in a statement Thursday that it, too, fielded complaints from people concerned that Washington’s skin was deliberately lightened. “While we did not digitally lighten Kerry’s skin tone, our cover lighting has likely contributed to this concern. derstand that this has resulted in disappointment and hurt. We are listening, and the feedback has been valuable. DENPASAR - Bali Province will get three additional tsunami sirens from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) this year. “Bali has six tsunami sirens so far. With the addition of three new sirens, the total number of tsunami sirens in Bali will increase to nine,” Head of the Disaster and Crisis Management Center (Pusdalops PB) of Bali Province I. Made Gde Jaya Serataberana stated on Thursday. The three sirens will be installed in Serangan Island of Denpasar municipality, Belalang village in Tabanan district, and Seririt Subdistrict Office in Buleleng district. “The other six tsunami sirens are installed in Sunrise Beach Sanur, Tanjung Benoa, Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), Kedonganan, Kuta, and Seminyak,” he noted. The tsunami siren sites will also be equipped with maps and evacuation signs, Serataberana revealed. “The BNPB, along with the Ministry of Public Works, is building a temporary evacuation site in

Serangan. The construction work is 80 percent complete,” he said. Around Rp870 million has been allocated from the Bali local budget (APBD) for the routine maintenance of the six installed sirens. “The maintenance of the sirens in other provinces is financed by the central government budget. In Bali, the maintenance costs are allocated from the provincial government budget in accordance with the Bali governor’s policy,” noted Serataberana. Moreover, the six installed sirens are routinely tested by Pusdalops PB on the 26th of every month, at 10 a.m. WITA, to check whether they are functioning properly. “We inform the society first, so that they not panic when the alarm is turned on. We hope the people in Bali can be prepared for the possibility of a tsunami,” he stated. (ant)

Belimbing is one of eight tourism villages in Tabanan that has received funding from the central government through the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM). According to Wayan, Belimbing has great potential as a tourism village with major points of interest including the Mekori Temple that has famous historical value, the particular culture of the population, lush forests, agro-tourism, a trekking path

and a waterfall which is however still hard to access due to lack of infrastructure. The development of Belimbing as a tourist village started in 2010, “but the development is still hampered by the lack of facilities and accommodations”, said Adnyana. Investors to build tourist accommodation, Flora and fauna on Menjangan Island are threatened

SINGARAJA - Chairperson of the Peduli Alam dan Lingkungan (Pilang) NGO, Ni Kadek Indrawati, is dedicated to the protection of the beauty and rare animals on Menjangan Island. According to her, the investors who are allegedly planning to build a resort and villa on Menjangan Island would be disturbing the local habitat of flora and fauna, if the plan goes ahead. Moreover, the investor plans to locate the tourist accommodation development in Post I of Menjangan Island, which is an inappropriate place for the investor to develop this project. Indrawati said on Wensday (feb 11) that the strategic location on Menjangan Island is home to a number of forests, beaches and includes part of the mainland area. If the investor does not pay attention to the local environment and sacred areas when planning this development, it could disrupt the eco-system of the entire island. “The trees will probably be cut by down along with other interventions to the habitat of the island. Such actions on the part of the investor, would certainly disturb the variety of wildlife and lush forests of Menjagan Island” she said. Pilang therefore requests there be no exploitation of the environment of Menjangan Island. The natural ecosystems of the 176 hectares that the island consists of, are the responsibility of the entire community. Lately, it has come to people’s attention that the forests and wildlife of Menjangan Island have always been cared for by the surrounding community. “The beauty of the jungle is very well

GIANYAR – After stealing approximately IDR 17 million from the cashier at Bali Safari, I Gusti Agung Bagus Pradipta was arrested in his home in Medahan village by the Gianyar Police on Wednesday afternoon (Feb 11). When Pradipta, had been working as a security guard for Bali Safari and when police searched his room at home, they found illicit drugs and weapons. The perpetrator and evidence have been secured by the Gianyar Subdistrict Police. Police officers received a report about the theft of IDR 17 million from Bali Safari, on Monday afternoon. The Gianyar police officers that conducted the investigation used CCTV footage to identify the Vario motocycle used by the perpetrator that was traced to a second-grade vocational school student named Komang Gilang Rismawan. “On Monday, I was sent a message via BBM from him (I Gusti Agung Bagus Pradipta—Ed). He said he wanted to borrow my motorcycle to go get some money in Sanur around 2:00 p.m., he also used my helmet and jacket. He asked that I bring his motocycle home” Komang Gilang told reporters after being examined by the Gianyar Subdistrict Police on Wednesday around 3:00 p.m. Unexpectedly, I Gusti Agung Bagus Pradipta rode the motorcycle to Bali Safari. At the crime scene, tattooed Pradipta immediately went to cashier booth number five that had been left by its attendant. “Yes, last Monday at about 3PM, I indeed left my cash to go deliver some files” said Bali Safari Cashier Ayu Ariani who was also interrogated by the Gianyar Police. Ariani said that when she left

her cashier booth, she locked the door of her booth. However, fifteen minutes later when she returned, she saw that the door had been opened. When she checked the cash, she discovered that the IDR 17 million that had been in her till, had vanished “Even though I had brought the key of the cashier booth with me when I went to deliver the files, when I returned the door was opened, which made me suspicious, and in fact the money was gone, and I started to cry” she said. Allegedly the perpetrator who worked as a security guard at Bali Safari used a spare key to access cashier number 5. According to the testimony of eye-witnesses, the perpetrator was acting suspicious as he left Bali Safari. Two days later, police officers led by Chief of Gianyar Subdistrict Police Criminal Investigation, Made Tama, discovered the identity of Bagus Pradipta and immediately raided his home in Medahan hamlet, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, on Wednesday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. “Based on the CCTV footage and the testimonies of several witnesses, we were able to identify the perpetrator and arrested him this afternoon” said Made Tama. When the room of the crew-cut man was searched, police found two packs of crystal meth, five units of ecstasy, a pack of straws, hundreds of plastic 5cm plastic clips, a pocket-knife and two bullets, as the proceeds of the theft. When asked about the discovery of sharp bullets in the search, Made Tama said that investigation was ongoing. “Preventing radicalization is a key element of the right against terrorism,” the draft statement says. It also calls for development of communication strategies to promote tolerance, non-discrimination, fundamental freedoms and solidarity throughout the EU, and use of education, vocational training and rehabilitation to limit the lure of radicalization, including for people in prison. If all three of the major proposals are adopted, “the EU would be better equipped” to deal with the terrorism challenge, said de Hoop Scheffer. FRANKFURT — A top European Central Bank official says the bank’s new 1.1 trillion euro ($1.2 trillion) monetary stimulus could “fall on barren ground” if governments do not cut red tape and excessive regulation. The bank will start purchasing government bonds with newly printed money next month, a step aimed at increasing alarmingly low inflation and warding off long-term stagnation. ECB executive board member Peter Praet said in the text of a speech in London on Thursday that “perhaps the biggest risk we face with our new measures is that they fall on barren ground because governments are not doing enough to raise confidence in the future.” The ECB announced the stimulus Jan. 22 in an effort to raise growth and an alarmingly low rate of inflation. euro currency union fell 0.6 percent annually in January. The stimulus should lower interest rates even further. Some bond-market yields have even fallen below zero ahead of the start of the program. Praet said monetary policy can increase returns on starting a new business by lowering the cost of the capital needed to start it. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s economy expanded at a betterthan-expected 5.8 percent in the last quarter of 2014 thanks to strong domestic demand, the central bank said Thursday, helping the country to its best annual performance in four years. The news will come as welcome relief for the government, which has recently unveiled measures to help the petroleum-exporting country cope with the recent plunge in global oil prices. The October-December growth in Southeast Asia’s third biggest economy was better than the 5.6 percent tipped by analysts in a Bloomberg News survey. The annual rate of 6.0 percent also surpassed the 5.8 percent forecast and was the best performance since 7.4 percent growth in 2010. Bank Negara said “domestic demand remained the anchor of growth in the fourth quarter”, with analysts pointing to solid performances in the construction, services and manufacturing sectors. “The Malaysian economy is expected to remain on a steady growth path,” the central bank said. “The gradual recovery in global growth will lend support to manufactured export performance, although overall export growth would likely remain modest amid lower commodity prices.” Economists have tipped growth to slow this year owing to plunging price of oil and other commodities as well as weakness in key overseas

MANGUPURA - Dengue fever cases in Badung County have started to reach plague proportions. At least, 114 cases were recorded in January 2015, and February to date has seen 24 cases. Most cases occurred in the South Kuta subdistrict followed by Mengwi, Kuta, North Kuta, Abiansemal and Petang subdistrict. These numbers, were revealed by Chief of Badung Health Agency, Gede Putra Suteja. Suteja, said that the incidence of cases last year at the same month were as follows: January 2014 saw 275 cases and February saw an increased to 280 cases. The peak in number of dengue cases for 2014 took place in February. He hopes there will not be an increase this year. “Most cases occurred in South Kuta subdistrict, while in Petang subdistrict there were fewer cases because the area is located at a higher altitude and is cooler”, he said. Two months after the admission fee was raised, no work has been done on the site at all, despite this being the tourism icon of Bangli. It is feared that if things go on like this, tourists will stop coming to Kintamani. Such concerns were expressed by Gelgel Wisnawa, member of Commission II of the Bangli House. According to him, when the government decided to raise the admission fee by as much as 200 percent, they should have made sure that arrangements had been made to provide public facilities. So that the admission fee paid by travelers would be reflected by the comfort they enjoyed. “We worry that if the infrastructure of Penelokan is not arranged or improved, it will cause a serious decrease in the number of tourist visits”, he said. For this reason, Gelgel asked the Culture and Tourism Agency to

Justice elusive 10 years after killing of Lebanon’s Hariri

BEIRUT — The public gallery at a court in the Netherlands was as deserted as the defendant’s dock on a recent day at the trial of five Hezbollah suspects in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, one of the most prominent Sunni politicians in the Middle East. The massive explosion that tore through his convoy on the Beirut seaside 10 years ago sent a tremor across the region and unleashed a popular uprising that briefly united the Lebanese and ejected Syrian troops from the country. But a decade later, and despite millions of dollars spent, justice remains elusive in a case that has been overshadowed by more recent turmoil. “The tribunal harks back to another era, and the latest developments have regrettably overtaken it,” said Hilal Khashan, professor of political science at the American University of Beirut. And yet despite its failings, the tribunal is still widely seen as a small but necessary step toward ending a culture of impunity in an increasingly violent region. The Feb. 14, 2005 assassination of Hariri, referred to by some as Lebanon’s Sept. 11, killed the former premier and 21 others, and wounded more than 200 people, stunning a nation long used to violence and political assassinations. Hariri, a charismatic billionaire businessman, was the most prominent Sunni politician in Lebanon. Although a divisive figure, he was credited with rebuilding

downtown Beirut from the ravages of the 1975-1990 civil war. Anti-Syrian groups, then in the opposition, blamed the Syrian government for Hariri’s assassination, a charge denied by Damascus. The country today is beset by a militant threat to its border and frequent violence that spills over from neighboring Syria’s civil war. Hariri’s son, Saad, who assumed his father’s political mantle, resides in Paris and Saudi Arabia, worried he would also be killed if he returned to Lebanon. Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasral-

lah, who has cast the assassination and tribunal as an Israeli plot, has warned he would “cut off the hand” of anyone who tries to arrest the five Hezbollah suspects, saying the tribunal will never get its hands on them, not “even in 300 years.” A U.N.-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon, set up in the Dutch town of Leidschendam, started the trial of the five suspects in absentia in January 2014. Many Lebanese politicians and witnesses have traveled to the Netherlands-based court to give their testimonies over the past year. Marwan Hamadeh, a leading Lebanese legislator and former Cabinet minister who was close to Hariri, is one of them. He himself was severely wounded in an assassination attempt four months before Hariri was killed. He believes the Syrian government was behind the killing. “We never sought revenge,” he told The Associated Press in his office in downtown Beirut. “But by revealing who executed the crime, we are also gradually uncovering those who incited and took the decision for the crime,” he said. Israel: Gaza-bound boat with munition intercepted last month JERUSALEM — The Israeli military says a boat carrying materials for making weapons was intercepted by the navy last month en route to the Gaza Strip from the Sinai Peninsula. It says charges against three suspected smugglers, who were detained on board, were filed this week. The statement late Wednesday says the vessel carried material for making rockets and mortars of the type Hamas has fired at Israel. Israel, along with Egypt, imposed a blockade on Gaza after the Palestinian militant Hamas group seized the strip in 2007 from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Israel says the measure is meant to stop Hamas from smuggling weapons. Hamas brings weapons and other goods into Gaza via underground, cross-border tunnels dug to neighboring Sinai. Egypt has recently destroyed many of the tunnels. (ap)

Chinese relatives protest in Malaysia over missing plane KUALA LUMPUR — Chinese relatives of passengers on a missing Malaysia Airlines flight have protested outside the carrier’s office, urging Malaysia to rescind a declaration that all those on board have perished. Flight 370, which disappeared last March 8 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, is believed to have crashed in the southern Indian Ocean. A search is ongoing. Malaysia’s government last month declared the incident was an accident and said all 239 people on board are presumed dead, paving the way for compensation claims. About 15 Chinese relatives protested Thursday, saying there was no evidence of the plane’s fate. Many of the victims’ families in China — where the majority of the passengers were from — still hold onto hope that their loved ones are alive. (ap)

JAKARTA - High-school girls in an Indonesian district will not be subjected to virginity tests in order to graduate, an official insisted Wednesday, after a lawmaker sparked an outcry by proposing the move. The MP in the Jember local parliament on the main island of Java, last week put forward a regulation on “good conduct” that included forcing female students to pass a virginity test before they can complete high school. He argued that the move was aimed at tackling pre-marital sex in conservative Indonesia, which has the world’s biggest Muslim population. But rights groups and Islamic authorities alike reacted furiously, prompting officials in Jember to swiftly distance themselves from

the plan. Kusen Andalas, deputy head of the district, insisted Wednesday that the proposal would not go ahead: “I don’t think it is ethical to carry out such tests, it is against people’s rights.” The parliament’s deputy speaker, Ayub Junaidi, had already reportedly apologised for the comments and said no such bylaw would be enacted. Human Rights Watch deputy director for Asia, Phelim Kine, described the proposal as “appalling”, adding: “The Indonesian

government’s tolerance for this violence against women and girls needs to end.” The issue of virginity tests has caused controversy in Indonesia before. In 2013, the education chief of a city on western Sumatra island sparked outrage by suggesting that teenage schoolgirls should undergo virginity tests to enter senior high school. MONTREUIL - The wife of a Frenchman on death row in Indonesia for drug offences said on Wednesday she will continue to fight for his release despite fears he might be executed soon. Serge Atlaoui, has a “sword of Damocles hanging over his head”, his wife Sabine Atlaoui told an antideath penalty press conference. The Frenchman, 51, saw his appeal for clemency rejected in January by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, a vocal supporter of capital punishment for drug offenders. “He is scared that he will never see his children again,” said Atlaoui’s wife, who said she is still “holding onto hope”. Atlaoui, a father of four, was arrested near Jakarta in 2005 in a secret laboratory producing ecstasy. He was sentenced to death in 2007 on drug trafficking charges. Imprisoned in Indonesia for ten years, he has always denied the charges saying he was installing industrial machinery in what he thought was an acrylics factory. According to local media reports, Atlaoui, one of seven foreigners on Indonesia’s death row, could soon

face execution. His lawyer in Indonesia filed a request last Tuesday for a trial review, a last-ditch attempt to save his client’s life. Sabine Atlaoui says she has placed all her hopes in the review and will continue to fight for her “innocent” husband. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was scheduled to visit Indonesia to try to get Atlaoui off death row, but had to postpone his trip because of the crisis in Ukraine. He did, however, speak to his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi on Wednesday, to remind him of France’s anti-death penalty stance, a foreign ministry spokesperson told AFP. French President Francois Hollande also wrote to Widodo last month asking him to grant Atlaoui a reprieve, the spokesperson said. Around 12 Indonesians and foreigners are on death row following drug offence convictions in a country with the some of the toughest drug laws in the world. JAKARTA - Indonesia could lose the right to host the 2018 Asian Games unless its main sporting body changes a logo that includes the Olympic rings, an official said Wednesday. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in September approved Indonesia as hosts for the games after Vietnam decided to withdraw due to rising costs. But the International Olympic Committee sent a letter to President Joko Widodo warning the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) could lose the games because of its use of the Olympic’s five interlocking rings in its symbol. Rita Subowo, chairwoman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, said the letter warned that using the logo amounted to a “copyright violation” and unless the issue was resolved the OCA may rethink its decision to award the 2018 games to Indonesia.

Subowo said she had “reminded KONI from the begining to drop the five rings from its logo. It potentially violates the IOC’s intellectual property rights”. The Asian Games, the world’s biggest multi-sport event after the Olympics, are organised by the OCA, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. However, KONI deputy chief Manuel Robert Inkiriwang insisted that the body was the official holder of the five rings logo copyright. “KONI has the legal right to use the logo,” he said, adding that KONI had abandoned the logo in 2007 but started using it again in 2014. The country’s sports ministry said the government was working to try and settle the issue. The 17th Asian Games took place in South Korea last year. (afp)

Spain: Toxic cloud spreads over 2 towns after chemical blast

MADRID — Spanish authorities have ordered the residents of two northeastern towns to stay indoors after a chemical explosion at a warehouse spread a large, orange toxic cloud over the area. A spokeswoman for Catalonia’s regional firefighting department said the blast occurred Thursday when products being delivered to a warehouse in the city of Igualada became mixed, exploded and set a truck on fire. She said two people were slightly injured. The Red Cross cited firefighters as saying the chemicals were nitric acid and ferric chloride. The spokeswoman said firefighters are urging some 40,000 residents of Igualada and the nearby town of Odena to stay indoors until the cloud dissipates. She said the town’s water systems are also being checked. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with department regulations. (ap)

Nishikori survives 3-set match to move into quarterfinals MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Topseeded Kei Nishikori was pushed to three sets in his opening match of the Memphis Open on Wednesday, beating American qualifier Ryan Harrison 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. Smalling the unlikely star for United in 3-1 win vs Burnley

MANCHESTER, England — Defender Chris Smalling scored twice after coming on as an early substitute to help Manchester United to a 3-1 win over Burnley that lifted the team to third place in the Premier League on Wednesday. Sent on the fifth minute for the injured Phil Jones, Smalling scored within 22 seconds with his first touch when he headed home at a corner. Relegation-threatened Burnley took the game to United, equalizing through a diving header by in-form striker Danny Ings in the 12th minute before wasting a number of chances to go ahead. Smalling made the visitors pay for their misses in the third minute of injury time by heading in Angel Di Maria’s corner, and Robin van Persie added a late penalty after Di Maria was fouled. United climbed above Southampton in the standings, but is occupying a Champions League qualification place without hitting top form. “I didn’t like this performance today,” United manager Louis van Gaal said. “Of course, we have won and the result is fantastic. But after this match you cannot say that we are going up and I want to progress every match. The build-up to the match was dominated by a bizarre news conference by Van Gaal, who responded to a jibe from West Ham manager Sam Allardyce that United was a long-ball team by producing a dossier of statistics which supposedly undermined the claim. BARCELONA — Lionel Messi scored one goal and set up another to help Barcelona beat Villarreal 3-1 on Wednesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal. It was Messi’s 11th goal in Barcelona’s 10-game winning streak and his 34th in 32 games this season as Luis Enrique’s Barcelona put one foot in the final. Espanyol settled for a 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao as it took the awaygoal advantage in the other semifinal, in which the Basques were lucky to keep their chances of advancing alive. Messi opened the scoring in the 41st minute at Camp Nou Stadium after Luis Suarez had won the ball and set him up.
