Curls and dimples: Shirley Temple dies at 85 Associated Press Writer

Shirley Temple, who sang, danced, sobbed and grinned her way into the hearts of Depression-era moviegoers and remains the ultimate child star decades later, died Monday night at 85. Other pre-teens, from Macaulay Culkin to Miley Cyrus, have been as famous in their time. But none of them helped shape their time the way Temple did. Dimpled, precocious and adorable, she was America’s top box office star during Hollywood’s golden age and such an enduring symbol of innocence that kids still know the drink named for her: a sweet, nonalcoholic cocktail of ginger ale and grenadine, topped with a maraschino cherry. Her movies — which included “Bright Eyes” (1934), “Curly Top” (1935), “Dimples” (1936) and “Heidi” (1937) — featured sentimental themes and musical subplots, with stories of resilience that

a struggling American public strongly identified with. Her early life was free of the scandals that have plagued Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and so many other child stars — parental feuds, or drug and alcohol addiction. She was a tribute to the economic and inspirational power of movies, credited with helping to save 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy and praised by President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself as a bright spirit during a gloomy time.

She was “just absolutely marvelous, greatest in the world,” director Allan Dwan told filmmaker-author Peter Bogdanovich in his book “Who the Devil Made It: Conversations With Legendary Film Directors.” “With Shirley, you’d just tell her once and she’d remember the rest of her life,” said Dwan, who directed her in “Heidi” and “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.” ‘’Whatever it was she was supposed to do — she’d do it. ... And if one of the actors got stuck, she’d tell him what his line was — she knew it better than he did.” Her achievements did not end with movies. Retired from acting at 21, she went on to hold several diplomatic posts in Republican administrations, including ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the sudden collapse of communism in 1989.

The original 1987 “RoboCop,” Dutch director Paul Verhoeven’s first Hollywood film, isn’t so much a movie to revere as a bit of brutalism to behold. It had a grim comic vibe, satirizing the savagery of both corporate bloodthirstiness and justice-seeking rampages. Peter Weller’s RoboCop was a techno-Frankenstein created to tame Detroit’s rampant crime: Dirty Harry for dystopia. Remaking “RoboCop” is like trying to recreate a nightmare. That’s one reason

why plans to remake the film were meant with mostly dubious derision: Hollywood, particularly nowadays, isn’t in the business of nihilism. Post-apocalyptic films may be all the rage, but a movie about a cop’s dead body shoved into a robot is a tad darker than Jennifer Lawrence running through the woods. Directed by Jose Padilha (the Brazilian filmmaker who made the excellent documentary “Bus 174” before shifting into action with “Elite Squad”), this “RoboCop” has updated the dystopia with some clever ideas and better acting, while

at the same time sanitizing any satire with video-game polish and sequel baiting. The smartest addition comes early, shifting the story to Tehran, where the global company OmniCorp has drones stopping and frisking in the streets. We’re introduced to this by talk show host Pat Novak (Sam Jackson), who appears throughout the film, brazenly promoting Pentagon propaganda, trying to convince what he calls a bizarrely “robot-phobic” American public that OmniCorp drones can make the U.S. safer, too. It’s a damning starting point that already positions America as the propagator of emotion-less killing machine. When the story shifts to Detroit, it gives the whole film the frame of: Would we treat ourselves how we treat those abroad? Opening the U.S. market to its drones is judged imperative by OmniCorp. CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) is flanked by executive Liz Kline (Jennifer Ehle) and marketing wizard (Jay Baruchel, brilliantly smarmy). To turn the political tide, they decide they need (literally) a more human face. For their RoboCop prototype, they find Detroit police detective Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), who has been badly maimed by a car bomb meant to derail his pursuit of a drug kingpin. Gary Oldman (always good, less frequently tested) plays the scientist who preserves little more than Murphy’s brain in his new steel body, controlling his emotions and memory with lowered levels of dopamine.

Yet ironically, in the midst of rapid growth of tourism, many Balinese people were still not prosperous. They just got the dregs of tourism. It was said by Chairman of the Indonesian Economist Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. Ketut Rahyuda, where high investment growth was still dominated by foreign investors and those from outside Bali. DENPASAR - The criminologist Gde Made Swardhana said the parole granted to the drug convict Schapelle Leigh Corby from Australia was indeed possible if it referred to the Law. Moreover, any prisoner had the same right to apply for parole. “What is being debated today is caused by the commitment of this nation to fight narcotic. Does similar commitment also apply to the inmates? If so, I have long suggested aggravating the sentence to narcotic crimes or punishing them with death penalty. So, it will be unnecessary to grant any remission, clemency or parole if the government has commitment for that,” he said in Denpasar. This lecturer from the Faculty of Law, University of Udayana, also saw the possibility of legal lobbying. It was enabled because the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Australia was also peppered with the agreement. It could happen where one of the points in the agreement

So, in the future, there would be no controversy when a parole or remissions and clemency would be granted to narcotic convict, including other special crimes such as terrorism and corruption. DENPASAR - The Real Estate Indonesia (REI) of Bali Chapter requested foreign developers investing in Bali to give contribution to strengthening the Balinese culture and customs. The property developers may not only look for profits on the Island of the Gods without generating multiplier effect on the surrounding community. “In Bali, there are 1,500 customary villages. If we do not maintain them, who else will do? Therefore, the incoming foreign and local developers must give contribution. The local ones have been set in the permit, but I think the foreign developers have not given their contribution yet,” said Chairman of the REI Bali, Dewa Putu Selawa, in Denpasar, Tuesday (Feb 11). According to him, the government should provide a policy to enable the income of customary village from the investment, especially in the property sector. The income of the investment would be used for the prosperity of customary villagers. In Bali, many customary villagers were still on the poverty line, whereas the investment grew rapidly around them. “What percent should be saved here and what percent is taken out has not been regulated, so there is no multiplier effect. For instance, Singapore is setting every incoming investment, so that the community is growing,” he said. He also hoped the government could make clear zonation to prevent violations against spatial plan and provide incentives for investors wishing to invest outside Southern Bali. “It’s very good if investors have penetrated Nusa Penida because other than generating equity it will also make the price of land in the region rise. However, the zonation should be clear, so that the investors will not build near the temple,” he said. He argued the provision of adequate infrastructure was the key to economic equality in Bali. All this time, the investors were reluctant to invest in the Northern and Eastern Bali and

preferred to invest in Southern Bali like in Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar because the existing infrastructure was adequate. “The provision of infrastructure is the obligation of the government. Thus, the investors want to invest there and do not choose Southern Bali having already been crowded,” he said. He explained that with the availability of adequate infrastructure in Northern, Eastern and Western Bali, the investors would flock to the area to invest. “The government does not need to chase away the investors from Southern Bali. They will automatically invest to Northern and Eastern Bali when good infrastructure has been available,” he revealed optimistically. He said that in terms of economic standpoint, investing in the Northern and Eastern Bali was currently unprofitable. This happened because it would take a long time to reach the regions. “Investors are lazy to go there because it is not economically feasible. On that account, it is required an adequate infrastructure used to encourage the investment there,” he said. An economist from the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Gusti Bagus Wiksuana, previously revealed that the development of infrastructure was the key to the equity in Bali. Even, the infrastructure development on the island would improve the connectivity to the economy, so it could encourage the equity. “Local government should take strategic steps to fix the infrastructure, so that it can improve the infrastructure in Eastern and Northern Bali,” he said. He added the construction of road infrastructure should be accelerated, both above the ground and underground. Bali government should immediately find out a solution regarding the road development that could access the road in North Bali and West Bali tourism area without taking it for many hours. “More importantly is that how to create a road access that can cut travel time from Southern to Northern Bali and Eastern Bali,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TOKYO — Toyota said Wednesday it is recalling 1.9 million hybrid Prius cars globally for a software glitch that could cause the vehicle to stall. Toyota Motor Corp. said that 997,000 Prius cars in Japan, some 713,000 in North America, another 130,000 in Europe and the rest in other regions are being recalled for a problem in the software to control the hybrid system. No accidents or injuries have been reported related to the problem. The software could cause transistors to become damaged, causing warnings lights to go off, driving power to be reduced or the car to stop. The recalled vehicles were manufactured between March 2009 and February 2014. The Japanese automaker suffered massive recalls starting in 2009, affecting more than 14 million vehicles for problems including floor mats, gas pedals and brakes.

HARTFORD, Connecticut — As police responded to a deadly car crash, they noticed an increasingly familiar sight: a remote-controlled aircraft, equipped with a video camera, hovering over the wreckage. The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation of the drone, which was used by an on-call employee for a Connecticut television station. The FAA is developing new rules as the technology makes drones far more versatile, but for now operators can run afoul of regulations by using them for commercial purposes, including journalism. The number of reported incidents nationwide increased from about 2,800 in 2010 to nearly 4,000 last year, according to data collected by the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA attributed the increase to more reporting by pilots as well as the availability of stronger lasers that can reach higher altitudes. Portland, Ore., had the most reported instances, with 139. The rest of the top 10: Houston; Phoenix; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Chicago; New York; Honolulu; and Miami. No laser incident has resulted in a crash, but officials emphasized Monday that the threat is real. The FBI plans to offer a $10,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction. “We applaud the FBI for recognizing how serious this situation is,” said Capt. Sean Cassidy, first vice president of the Airline Pilots Association. The FAA said that over the past two years, it has investigated 152 laser incidents, resulting in 96 “enforcement actions.”

Beware of foreign investors in property sector

DENPASAR - After operating continuously for 24,000 hours, the Gilimanuk power plant should enter maintenance stage. As a result, the power plant with capacity of 130 MW would not be fully in operation. It means the total power supply for Bali will reduce. It is likely to result in a blackout. Spokesperson of the PLN Bali Wayan Redika when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday (Feb 11) denied if it would cause blackout in Bali. SEOUL, South Korea — Senior officials from the rival Koreas met Wednesday at a border village, their highest-level talks in years and a potential signal that Pyongyang wants better ties and the resumption of lucrative cooperative projects. Seoul officials said the meeting was requested by North Korea, which has launched a recent charm offensive after raising tensions last spring with repeated threats to fire nuclear-tipped missiles against Seoul and Washington. Ayurvedic medicine refers to the contents of the scripture Ayurveda born thousands of years ago. Ayurvedic scripture denotes a part of Upaweda in the group of Smriti Vedas. However, the Ayurvedic scripture is often confused with Yajur Veda, the scripture containing sacrificial formula that also belongs to Smriti Veda. Yajur Veda itself is a scripture discussing about Yajña or ceremony. Author of the book Usada Bali (Balinese Traditional Healing), the late Prof. IGN Nala, once said that to help the healing, the Ayurvedic healers usually provided natural herbal medicine having few side effects. Almost all plants existing around us could be eaten, they were medicine. On that account, all plants having efficacy for healing were necessary to be inventoried and developed. In the meantime, the Dean of Faculty of Health Science, Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), I Nyoman Prastika, said that based Taru Premana palm-manuscript there were a number of beneficial herbs having the efficacy to cure diseases. Parts of those plants taken advantage consisted of its leaf, flower, fruit, bark or roots. Each herb had different quality such as cool, warm and mild. To know whether a particular plant had a cold, warm or mild quality, it could be observed from the color of its flower and flavor. For instance, white, yellow and green flower had warm quality. If their flowers were red and blue, these plants had cool efficacy. Meanwhile, if the flower was multi-colors, they could be ensured to have mild efficacy. Likewise, if they tasted sweet and sour, its quality might be warm. However, if they tasted bitter and hot, they had cool efficacy. Then, if they were tasteless, they belonged to mild plant. In herbal medicine system, added Prastika, people would be healthy if they consumed (ahara) nutritious healthy foods regularly, had adequate rest or sleep (nidra), and behaved (vihara) healthy. If the three aspects had been committed well, but it was still found health disturbances, then a herbal treatment (ausadhi) was required. Preparation method of herbal medicine could be divided into three kinds, namely grinding, spraying and boiled. Its healing method could be performed by drinking and dropping for internal healing, while the spraying or applying the paste for external use. Then, what kinds of plant could be used to cure diseases? Prastika said that virtually all edible plants by animals could be eaten by humans. Whether the herbs had medicinal quality, they could be observed from the color of their flowers and flavor as mentioned above. Similarly, the plants frequently used for spices in the cooking contained drug efficacy. Red ginger for example, was good to increase warmth of the body as well as to stimulate or maintain immunity. If red ginger added with the flowers of carambola, bark of tamarind and kalmegh leaves, they could be used to accelerate breathing and relieve cough. Meanwhile, to break up kidney stones and cure colic, people could also use herbal medicine. Its ingredients consisted of roots of reed, roots of palm tree, root of areca nut tree and added with palm sugar. All materials were thoroughly boiled. SINGAPORE - Indonesian flag-carrier Garuda is developing a new aviation hub on Bintan Island near Singapore to strengthen its domestic and international network, it was announced Tuesday. Garuda entered into a partnership with Singapore-based firm Gallant Venture, which will invest Sg$300 million ($237 million) into the project. The two firms signed an agreement at the Singapore Airshow to jointly develop Bintan as Garuda’s new hub with a dedicated airport for the carrier and its subsidiary as well as a centre for aircraft maintenance. Garuda will also promote Bintan, an island with white-sand beaches and resorts less than an hour by boat from Singapore, as a tourism destination. “Currently the airport is under construction, they have started with a runway that is 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) that is quite long and can land wide-body (aircraft),” Emirsyah Satar, CEO of Garuda Indonesia, told a media briefing.

“This new operation out of Bintan will help strengthen Garuda’s network development, with a potential to connect East Indonesia with West Indonesia and become the meeting point for our international flights to Europe and the Far East,” Satar added. “With our regional fleet stationed in Bintan, Garuda will be able to be more competitive to service the second tier tourist and business destination cities within ASEAN.” The airport is scheduled to start operating in the first quarter of 2016. Indonesian carriers are setting up aviation hubs across the vast archipelago because of congestion at the main airport in Jakarta. Bintan will be Garuda’s fifth hub in Indonesia after Jakarta, Makasar in Sulawesi, Denpasar in Bali and Medan in Sumatra. BEIJING — A powerful earthquake struck a sparsely populated area of China’s far western region of Xinjiang on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear if it caused casualties or significant damage. The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.8 quake was centered 269 kilometers (168 miles) east-southeast of Hotan at a depth of 12.5 kilometers (7.7 miles). The area is known in Chinese as Yutian, and in the local Uighur language as Keriya. The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the quake at magnitude 7.3 and said it was followed by at least seven smaller quakes within the following half hour. Yutian county is a mountainous area several thousand meters above sea level on the edge of the Taklamakan desert. The director of the Yutian Civil Affairs Bureau, Zhang Chong, said officials were still gathering information. A police officer in Yutian said he had felt tremors shaking the police station and ran outside. Wang Gang, a fire brigade chief in Yutian County, told the national CCTV broadcaster he was heading from the county seat to the earthquake zone, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) away, with a team of police and firefighters. A magnitude-7.2 quake in that area in March 2008 collapsed some houses but caused no injuries. China’s worst earthquake in recent years was a magnitude-7.9 temblor that struck the southwestern province of Sichuan in 2008, leaving about 90,000 people dead or missing.

SINGAPORE - Indonesian flag-carrier Garuda is developing a new aviation hub on Bintan Island near Singapore to strengthen its domestic and international network, it was announced Tuesday. Garuda entered into a partnership with Singapore-based firm Gallant Venture, which will invest Sg$300 million ($237 million) into the project. The two firms signed an agreement at the Singapore Airshow to jointly develop Bintan as Garuda’s new hub with a dedicated airport for the carrier and its subsidiary as well as a centre for aircraft maintenance. Garuda will also promote Bintan, an island with white-sand beaches and resorts less than an hour by boat from Singapore, as a tourism destination. “Currently the airport is under construction, they have started with a runway that is 3,000 metres (10,000 feet) that is quite long and can land wide-body (aircraft),” Emirsyah Satar, CEO of Garuda Indonesia, told a media briefing.

“This new operation out of Bintan will help strengthen Garuda’s network development, with a potential to connect East Indonesia with West Indonesia and become the meeting point for our international flights to Europe and the Far East,” Satar added. “With our regional fleet stationed in Bintan, Garuda will be able to be more competitive to service the second tier tourist and business destination cities within ASEAN.” The airport is scheduled to start operating in the first quarter of 2016. Indonesian carriers are setting up aviation hubs across the vast archipelago because of congestion at the main airport in Jakarta. Bintan will be Garuda’s fifth hub in Indonesia after Jakarta, Makasar in Sulawesi, Denpasar in Bali and Medan in Sumatra. Ayurvedic medicine refers to the contents of the scripture Ayurveda born thousands of years ago. Ayurvedic scripture denotes a part of Upaweda in the group of Smriti Vedas. However, the Ayurvedic scripture is often confused with Yajur Veda, the scripture containing sacrificial formula that also belongs to Smriti Veda. Yajur Veda itself is a scripture discussing about Yajña or ceremony. Author of the book Usada Bali (Balinese Traditional Healing), the late Prof. IGN Nala, once said that to help the healing, the Ayurvedic healers usually provided natural herbal medicine having few side effects. Almost all plants existing around us could be eaten, they were medicine. On that account, all plants having efficacy for healing were necessary to be inventoried and developed. In the meantime, the Dean of Faculty of Health Science, Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), I Nyoman Prastika, said that based Taru Premana palm-manuscript there were a number of beneficial herbs having the efficacy to cure diseases. Parts of those plants taken advantage consisted of its leaf, flower, fruit, bark or roots. Each herb had different quality such as cool, warm and mild. To know whether a particular plant had a cold, warm or mild quality, it could be observed from the color of its flower and flavor. For instance, white, yellow and green flower had warm quality. If their flowers were red and blue, these plants had cool efficacy. Meanwhile, if the flower was multi-colors, they could be ensured to have mild efficacy. Likewise, if they tasted sweet and sour, its quality might be warm. However, if they tasted bitter and hot, they had cool efficacy. Then, if they were tasteless, they belonged to mild plant. In herbal medicine system, added Prastika, people would be healthy if they consumed (ahara) nutritious healthy foods regularly, had adequate rest or sleep (nidra), and behaved (vihara) healthy. If the three aspects had been committed well, but it was still found health disturbances, then a herbal treatment (ausadhi) was required. Preparation method of herbal medicine could be divided into three kinds, namely grinding, spraying and boiled. Its healing method could be performed by drinking and dropping for internal healing, while the spraying or applying the paste for external use. Then, what kinds of plant could be used to cure diseases? Prastika said that virtually all edible plants by animals could be eaten by humans. Whether the herbs had medicinal quality, they could be observed from the color of their flowers and flavor as mentioned above. Similarly, the plants frequently used for spices in the cooking contained drug efficacy. Red ginger for example, was good to increase warmth of the body as well as to stimulate or maintain immunity. If red ginger added with the flowers of carambola, bark of tamarind and kalmegh leaves, they could be used to accelerate breathing and relieve cough. Meanwhile, to break up kidney stones and cure colic, people could also use herbal medicine. Its ingredients consisted of roots of reed, roots of palm tree, root of areca nut tree and added with palm sugar. All materials were thoroughly boiled. Afterward, its decoction water was drunk in the morning and afternoon. Herbal remedies could also cope with cardiac palpitations. Its ingredients comprised the soy beans, green beans, ginger, cumin, fennel, bidara upas (Merremia mammosa) leaf, coriander and pulasari (Alyxia Stellata). All ingredients should be boiled and then water of its decoction was drunk regularly. Meanwhile, Balinese traditional healing used several palm-leaf manuscripts as reference. One of them was Lontar Usada Tiwang. This manuscript described about various types of diseases along with their treatments. Tiwang conveyed numerous symptoms in the form of disorder on the function of organ. There were several types of tiwang presented in the manuscripts such as tiwang utara, tiwang tojos, tiwang wedul, tiwang pemali pepasangan, tiwang wong, and tiwang rajasa. Prastika added that tiwang pemali pepasangan had symptoms like prickling pain in the chest and on the back. Being no resistant to the pain, the sufferers often groaned. The disease itself could be treated by means of bark of rauvolfia, temu tis (Curcuma purpurascens), grilled coconut, hazelnut and fennel. It was applied by spraying its paste.

However, one of the passengers, Made Mandra, said on Tuesday that the weather looked fine so the crossing could be done. The Celebrity fast boat apparently had been filled with hundreds of passengers leading to Kusamba traditional harbor. Throughout the crossing, the waves toward the mainland Klungkung looked calm. The overflowing water occurred because the small culverts passing through the road were unable to accommodate a large volume of water either from the road conduit to the north and from the irrigation channel passing in front of the Karangasem Prison. SEOUL, South Korea — Senior officials from the rival Koreas met Wednesday at a border village, their highest-level talks in years and a potential signal that Pyongyang wants better ties and the resumption of lucrative cooperative projects. Seoul officials said the meeting was requested by North Korea, which has launched a recent charm offensive after raising tensions last spring with repeated threats to fire nuclear-tipped missiles against Seoul and Washington. Later this month, the two Koreas are to hold reunions of families separated since the 1950-53 Korean War. It would be the first such reunions in more than three years. Wednesday’s meeting began with no fixed agenda, but South Korea wants to discuss ways to make the reunions run smoothly and whether to pursue them regularly, according to Seoul’s Unification Ministry, which is responsible for ties with North Korea. TOKYO — Toyota said Wednesday it is recalling 1.9 million hybrid Prius cars globally for a software glitch that could cause the vehicle to stall. Toyota Motor Corp. said that 997,000 Prius cars in Japan, some 713,000 in North America, another 130,000 in Europe and the rest in other regions are being recalled for a problem in the software to control the hybrid system. No accidents or injuries have been reported related to the problem. The software could cause transistors to become damaged, causing warnings lights to go off, driving power to be reduced or the car to stop. The recalled vehicles were manufactured between March 2009 and February 2014. The Japanese automaker suffered massive recalls starting in 2009, affecting more than 14 million vehicles for problems including floor mats, gas pedals and brakes.

HARTFORD, Connecticut — As police responded to a deadly car crash, they noticed an increasingly familiar sight: a remote-controlled aircraft, equipped with a video camera, hovering over the wreckage. The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation of the drone, which was used by an on-call employee for a Connecticut television station. The FAA is developing new rules as the technology makes drones far more versatile, but for now operators can run afoul of regulations by using them for commercial purposes, including journalism. The number of reported incidents nationwide increased from about 2,800 in 2010 to nearly 4,000 last year, according to data collected by the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA attributed the increase to more reporting by pilots as well as the availability of stronger lasers that can reach higher altitudes. Portland, Ore., had the most reported instances, with 139. The rest of the top 10: Houston; Phoenix; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Chicago; New York; Honolulu; and Miami. No laser incident has resulted in a crash, but officials emphasized Monday that the threat is real. The FBI plans to offer a $10,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction. “We applaud the FBI for recognizing how serious this situation is,” said Capt. Sean Cassidy, first vice president of the Airline Pilots Association. The FAA said that over the past two years, it has investigated 152 laser incidents, resulting in 96 “enforcement actions.”

DENPASAR - After operating continuously for 24,000 hours, the Gilimanuk power plant should enter maintenance stage. As a result, the power plant with capacity of 130 MW would not be fully in operation. It means the total power supply for Bali will reduce. It is likely to result in a blackout. Spokesperson of the PLN Bali Wayan Redika when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday (Feb 11) denied if it would cause blackout in Bali. However, he did not dismiss the existence of major maintenance in the Gilimanuk power plant. “We still have enough power to overcome the non-operation of the gasfueled power plant at Gilimanuk,” said Redika. He said that customers also needed to be alert due to such major maintenance. Operation of the Gilimanuk gas-fueled power plant with the capacity of 130 MW would stop temporarily. The maintenance would take 50 days starting from February 12 to April 2, 2014. Redika explained that Bali had 800 MW when there was no maintenance. Meanwhile, when the maintenance was undertaken to the power plant at Gilimanuk, there was still remaining power of 690 MW. In the meantime, the peak load at the moment averagely reached 670 MW. “This means that there is still a residual power that can supply the electricity to Bali,” he said. According to Redika, indeed with this maintenance Bali indeed became idle. Although it had been sufficient, the PLN attempted to increase the load by activating a rented generator with the capacity of 60 MW at Pesanggaran. However, the additional power supply would operate as of February 15 (first phase with 15 MW) and second phase as of February 27 coming to 45 MW. “Possibly, the PLN will apply blackout if the weather is hot so many people turn on the air conditioning,” he said. On that account, his party also appealed to the businesses such as hotels to turn on their captive power. For the time being, the availability of electricity in Bali came from the power plant at Gilimanuk (130 MW), Pesanggaran dieseland gas-fueled power plant (280 MW), Pemaron gas- and diesel-fueled power plant (210 MW) and Java-Bali submarine cables (2 x 100 MW). In the future, anticipation by providing additional cable would be realized in July (2 x 200 MW). In the meantime, the Celukan steam-fueled power supply would give additional supply of 3 x 135 MW, where the first stage accomplished at the end of 2014 with the capacity of 135 MW. (kmb12)

Does similar commitment also apply to the inmates? If so, I have long suggested aggravating the sentence to narcotic crimes or punishing them with death penalty. So, it will be unnecessary to grant any remission, clemency or parole if the government has commitment for that,” he said in Denpasar. This lecturer from the Faculty of Law, University of Udayana, also saw the possibility of legal lobbying. DENPASAR - The Real Estate Indonesia (REI) of Bali Chapter requested foreign developers investing in Bali to give contribution to strengthening the Balinese culture and customs. The property developers may not only look for profits on the Island of the Gods without generating multiplier effect on the surrounding community. “In Bali, there are 1,500 customary villages. If we do not maintain them, who else will do? Therefore, the incoming foreign and local developers must give contribution. The local ones have been set in the permit, but I think the foreign developers have not given their contribution yet,” said Chairman of the REI Bali, Dewa Putu Selawa, in Denpasar, Tuesday (Feb 11). According to him, the government should provide a policy to enable the income of customary village from the investment, especially in the property sector. The income of the investment would be used for the prosperity of customary villagers. In Bali, many customary villagers were still on the poverty line, whereas the investment grew rapidly around them. “What percent should be saved here and what percent is taken out has not been regulated, so there is no multiplier effect. For instance, Singapore is setting every incoming investment, so that the community is growing,” he said. He also hoped the government could make clear zonation to prevent violations against spatial plan and provide incentives for investors wishing to invest outside Southern Bali. “It’s very good if investors have penetrated Nusa Penida because other than generating equity it will also make the price of land in the region rise. However, the zonation should be clear, so that the investors will not build near the temple,” he said. He argued the provision of adequate infrastructure was the key to economic equality in Bali. All this time, the investors were reluctant to invest in the Northern and Eastern Bali and

preferred to invest in Southern Bali like in Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar because the existing infrastructure was adequate. “The provision of infrastructure is the obligation of the government. Thus, the investors want to invest there and do not choose Southern Bali having already been crowded,” he said. He explained that with the availability of adequate infrastructure in Northern, Eastern and Western Bali, the investors would flock to the area to invest. “The government does not need to chase away the investors from Southern Bali. They will automatically invest to Northern and Eastern Bali when good infrastructure has been available,” he revealed optimistically. He said that in terms of economic standpoint, investing in the Northern and Eastern Bali was currently unprofitable. This happened because it would take a long time to reach the regions. “Investors are lazy to go there because it is not economically feasible. On that account, it is required an adequate infrastructure used to encourage the investment there,” he said. An economist from the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Gusti Bagus Wiksuana, previously revealed that the development of infrastructure was the key to the equity in Bali. Even, the infrastructure development on the island would improve the connectivity to the economy, so it could encourage the equity. “Local government should take strategic steps to fix the infrastructure, so that it can improve the infrastructure in Eastern and Northern Bali,” he said. He added the construction of road infrastructure should be accelerated, both above the ground and underground. Bali government should immediately find out a solution regarding the road development that could access the road in North Bali and West Bali tourism area without taking it for many hours. “More importantly is that how to create a road access that can cut travel time from Southern to Northern Bali and Eastern Bali,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Shirley Temple, who sang, danced, sobbed and grinned her way into the hearts of Depression-era moviegoers and remains the ultimate child star decades later, died Monday night at 85. Other pre-teens, from Macaulay Culkin to Miley Cyrus, have been as famous in their time. But none of them helped shape their time the way Temple did. Dimpled, precocious and adorable, she was America’s top box office star during Hollywood’s golden age and such an enduring symbol of innocence that kids still know the drink named for her: a sweet, nonalcoholic cocktail of ginger ale and grenadine, topped with a maraschino cherry. Her movies — which included “Bright Eyes” (1934), “Curly Top” (1935), “Dimples” (1936) and “Heidi” (1937) — featured sentimental themes and musical subplots, with stories of resilience that

a struggling American public strongly identified with. Her early life was free of the scandals that have plagued Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan and so many other child stars — parental feuds, or drug and alcohol addiction. She was a tribute to the economic and inspirational power of movies, credited with helping to save 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy and praised by President Franklin D. Roosevelt himself as a bright spirit during a gloomy time.

She was “just absolutely marvelous, greatest in the world,” director Allan Dwan told filmmaker-author Peter Bogdanovich in his book “Who the Devil Made It: Conversations With Legendary Film Directors.” “With Shirley, you’d just tell her once and she’d remember the rest of her life,” said Dwan, who directed her in “Heidi” and “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.” ‘’Whatever it was she was supposed to do — she’d do it. ... And if one of the actors got stuck, she’d tell him what his line was — she knew it better than he did.” Her achievements did not end with movies. Retired from acting at 21, she went on to hold several diplomatic posts in Republican administrations, including ambassador to Czechoslovakia during the sudden collapse of communism in 1989.

The original 1987 “RoboCop,” Dutch director Paul Verhoeven’s first Hollywood film, isn’t so much a movie to revere as a bit of brutalism to behold. It had a grim comic vibe, satirizing the savagery of both corporate bloodthirstiness and justice-seeking rampages. Peter Weller’s RoboCop was a techno-Frankenstein created to tame Detroit’s rampant crime: Dirty Harry for dystopia. Remaking “RoboCop” is like trying to recreate a nightmare. That’s one reason

why plans to remake the film were meant with mostly dubious derision: Hollywood, particularly nowadays, isn’t in the business of nihilism. Post-apocalyptic films may be all the rage, but a movie about a cop’s dead body shoved into a robot is a tad darker than Jennifer Lawrence running through the woods. Directed by Jose Padilha (the Brazilian filmmaker who made the excellent documentary “Bus 174” before shifting into action with “Elite Squad”), this “RoboCop” has updated the dystopia with some clever ideas and better acting, while

at the same time sanitizing any satire with video-game polish and sequel baiting. The smartest addition comes early, shifting the story to Tehran, where the global company OmniCorp has drones stopping and frisking in the streets. We’re introduced to this by talk show host Pat Novak (Sam Jackson), who appears throughout the film, brazenly promoting Pentagon propaganda, trying to convince what he calls a bizarrely “robot-phobic” American public that OmniCorp drones can make the U.S. safer, too. It’s a damning starting point that already positions America as the propagator of emotion-less killing machine. When the story shifts to Detroit, it gives the whole film the frame of: Would we treat ourselves how we treat those abroad? Opening the U.S. market to its drones is judged imperative by OmniCorp. CEO Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) is flanked by executive Liz Kline (Jennifer Ehle) and marketing wizard (Jay Baruchel, brilliantly smarmy). To turn the political tide, they decide they need (literally) a more human face. For their RoboCop prototype, they find Detroit police detective Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), who has been badly maimed by a car bomb meant to derail his pursuit of a drug kingpin. Gary Oldman (always good, less frequently tested) plays the scientist who preserves little more than Murphy’s brain in his new steel body, controlling his emotions and memory with lowered levels of dopamine.

tax continued to increase. It was one of the factors causing people to sell their land as being unable to pay taxes. “Simply check the people in Southern Kuta, not all communities are prosperous. In addition, not all people can manage their land or money after selling the land. As a result, such condition

ends in poverty,” said the lecturer of Coordinator of Private Higher Education for Region VIII in charge of Mahendradatta University. According to him, it would be useless to get great nicknames like ‘Bali as tourist destination of the world’ if there were still people in poverty line. Properly, said Arjawa, aside from evenly developing cultural tourism in Bali region, the government was also expected to prepare human resources. ment attention,” he said. Bali had been rich in culture and the tourism was filled with the clatter of dollars. Yet ironically, in the midst of rapid growth of tourism, many Balinese people were still not prosperous. They just got the dregs of tourism. It was said by Chairman of the Indonesian Economist Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. Ketut Rahyuda, where high investment growth was still dominated by foreign investors and those from outside Bali.
