Clooney wins DeMille Award at Globes
George Clooney accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Golden Globes Sunday by honoring others — his Hollywood colleagues, his new wife and millions who marched in the wake of attacks in France last week. The veteran actor who moved from “ER” into movies was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award, an honor that has gone to the likes of Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Alfred Hitchcock and, in recent years, to Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman and Robert DeNiro. He was introduced by two former co-workers, Julianne Margulies and Don Cheadle. “You’ve always been very kind to me,” he said, addressing the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has nominated Clooney in more Golden Globe categories than any person. “I thank you for keeping small films alive. Big ones do fine. It’s the little ones that need an audience.” The newlywed actor’s wife, Amal Alamuddin, watched from the audience. “It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love,” Clooney said, looking out at her. “Even better when you’ve been waiting your whole life.” He recalled how actors who are nominated but don’t win awards can go home
feeling like losers and reminded those in the audience that they aren’t. “If you are in this room, you’ve caught the brass ring,” he said. “You’ve gotten to do what you’ve always dreamed of doing. That isn’t losing.” Clooney wore a “Je Suis Charlie” button on his tuxedo lapel in support of the French satirical magazine that was targeted by gunmen in France last week. He saluted the millions of people who honored the victims by marching in the street this weekend. “They didn’t march in protest,” Clooney said. “They marched in support of the idea that we will not walk in fear.” (ap)

Tanah Lot management asks for time to educate
TABANAN - The admission fee to the Tanah Lot tourist attraction is considered much cheaper than that of other tourist attractions outside Bali. For this reason, the Tabanan government along with the Tanah Lot customary village heads, plan to increase the admission fee. Management is ready to implement the fee hike anytime but acknowledges that travel agencies and tour guides need some time to integrate the change “Hopefully, the admission fee increase will not be implemented the news has been dissemination to travel agencies, travelers and tour guides” said Operations Manager of Tanah Lot tourist attraction, Toya Adnyana, some time ago. According to Toya, the new admission fee could be increased to USD 5 or about IDR 50,000 per person for foreign travelers from the 15,000-IDR 30,000 per person for foreign travelers that it is now. While domestic travelers would pay between IDR 15,000 and IDR 20,000 per person instead of IDR 7,500-IDR 10,000 per person. If the
proposed fee hike is approved, it could be applied as early as 2015 or 2016. Aside from the plan to the increase the admission fee, Tanah Lot plans to improve its facilites in 2015, including adding more CCTVs in the Southern and Western area of the site. “Right now, we have 16 CCTVs placed at a number of critical points but the south and west remain without cameras,” said Toya. The reserved and VIP parking areas are two other vulnerable points in need of cameras, according to Toya who hopes the governing bodies with respond favorably to this proposal. (kmb24)

GIANYAR – Famers in Gianyar region, continue to face various challenges, ranging from drought to flooding and now trouble getting their hands on urea fertililzer. Made Lonto expressed some of the difficulties faced by farmers in the “voice of Gianyar” section of the Bali Post daily newspaper, Saturday (Jan 10). This farmer from Payangan explained: “I have difficulty in obtaining the scarce urea, plus, the terms and conditions for aquiring it are very troublesome,” he said. Presumably he is referring to the trouble faced by farmers that do not belong to a Group Need Definitive Plan (RDKK). Head of Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Dewi Hariani, on Sunday (Jan11), denied the scarcity of urea in Gianyar region. In 2014, her party actually experienced overstock of urea. However, to gain access to the distribution of the fertilizer, farmers are obliged
to create a Group Need Definitive Plan. “Such a document cannot be created by an individual -only by a subak group, and it must be submitted a month in advance of need”, she explained. According to her, the problem frequently faced in the field is delay in delivery due to late document submission. “As a matter of practice, each company has to follow procedure for urea distribution. The Group Need Definitive Plan must be submitted from retailers to the distributors and then to manufacturers. Only after the plan has been approved, can the fertilizer be distributed to farmers. This flow of information is very confidential so we cannot allow fertilizer to be sold to individuals,” she said. Another phenomenon frequently encountered, said Dewi, was the delay in planting during the recent dry season due to shortages of water. This late planting
and lack of water means that they will need fertilizer this year. “We therefor allocated extra fertilizer to deal with the need which in the end caused an overstock of urea in 2014. “ she said. Data regarding the exact amounts were apparently not available at the office. When asked about the amount of fertilizer allocated to farmers, she said would depend on the proposal of the Group Need Definitive Plan of each subak organization. Regardless, her party nonetheless prepares the amount of fertilizer by referring to the area of agricultural land, say for 14,706 hectares harvesting twice, multiplied by 200 kg of fertilizer for each farmer for example. “Although we have such calculations, the order for fertilizers is sometimes uncertain, especially when farmers delay their planting,” she said, adding that the price of RPK fertilizer is IDR 2,300, and urea costs IDR 1,800 per kg. Related to this matter, not long ago, the Executive Assistant Manager of the Padma Resort Bali at Legian, Reza Sunardi, successfully attended a General Manager Program (GMP). It was organized at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, New York, providing him with new knowledge about leadership. “By chance, I was the only participant from Bali where I should pass a pre-qualification test before participating in the GMP,” he said at the beginning of the conversation. When attending the two-week session, Reza, thus his nickname, met with many general managers in the hospitality industry. Among them, 25 people were from Europe, 10 from America, 5 people from Africa and the rest from Asia, including Bali. “Coming home from attending the program, we have more global mindset toward a phenomenon,” said the figure also filling the position as the

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Leave coal, oil in ground for climate’s sake
PARIS - The Middle East must leave 40 percent of its oil reserves in the ground, and China, the US and Russia most of their coal if global warming is to be curbed, researchers said Wednesday. Globally, a third of oil, half of gas and over 80 percent of coal reserves must be left untouched until 2050, according to a novel breakdown of “unburnable” fossil-fuel stocks published in the journal Nature. This is the sole way to meet the UN target of limiting warming to 2.0 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over pre-Industrial Revolution levels, said co-author Christophe McGlade of University College London. “Policymakers must realise
that their instincts to completely use the fossil fuels within their countries are wholly incompatible with their commitments to the 2 C goal,” he warned. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that for a good chance of meeting the target, further emissions of Earth-warming greenhouse gases must be limited to about 1,000 billion tonnes (gigatonnes). But global fossil fuel reserves, on current estimates, would emit three times this total if used, said
the study. UN members are negotiating a global carbon-cutting climate pact to be signed in Paris in December. At current rates, emissions are steering the world towards potentially catastrophic warming of 4 C or more, scientists say. “Companies spent over $670 billion (565 billion euros) last year searching for and developing new fossil fuel resources,” said McGlade’s colleague and co-author Paul Ekins.
“They will need to rethink such substantial budgets if policies are implemented to support the 2 C limit, especially as new discoveries cannot lead to increased aggregate production.” For their project, McGlade and Ekins made a best estimate of quantities and locations of oil, gas and coal resources, and then assessed how much could be safely used, per region, up to 2050. They used two scenarios -- one with “widespread deployment” of carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities, a technology in its infancy, and one with no CCS. Even if CCS is widely implemented, over 430 billion barrels of oil must be left unburned, the
pair said. Under this scenario, the Middle East has over half the world’s “unburnable” oil -- more than 260 billion barrels or 38 percent of its stock -- equal to about eight years of global production calculated at 2013 levels of 87 million barrels per day. Central and South America must leave 58 billion barrels alone, Canada 39 billion and the former Soviet states 27 billion. About 95 trillion cubic metres (3,354 trillion cubic feet) of gas should remain unburned, the study found -- again the bulk (46 trillion cubic metres) is held in the Middle East and 31 trillion by former Soviet states. NASA finds more Earth-like planets outside solar system WASHINGTON — Earth has a few more near-twin planets outside our solar system, tantalizing possibilities in the search for extraterrestrial life. Astronomers announced Tuesday that depending on definitions, they have confirmed three or four more planets that are about the same size as Earth and are in the not-too-hot, not-too-cold “Goldilocks Zone” for liquid water to form. These planets are likely to be rocky like Earth, and not gas giants or ice worlds. They get about the same heat from their star as we get from the sun, according to the latest results from NASA’s planet hunting Kepler telescope. But don’t book your flights yet. They may be close to Earth in size and likely temperature in the gargantuan scale of the universe, but they aren’t quite close enough for comfort. Consider two of the new planets, the nearest to Earth discovered to date. If they have atmospheres similar to Earth’s — a big if — one would be a toasty 140 some degrees and the other would hover around zero, said study lead author Guillermo Torres, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Life conceivably could evolve and adapt to those temperatures, he said. Oh, and they aren’t actually within commuting distance of Earth. Those two are 500 and 1,100 light years away; a light year is 5.9 trillion miles. What’s important, said SETI Institute astronomer Douglas Caldwell, a study coauthor who presented the findings at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle, is that astronomers are a bit closer to finding twins of Earth and answering the age-old question: Are we alone? “These planets do exist; we didn’t know that before,” Torres said in a phone interview from Cambridge, Massachusetts. “What
we’re really looking for is signs of life eventually. We’re not there yet. It will take many years but this is the first step.” Torres’ team confirmed earlier discoveries and added new ones, bringing the total known number of planets that are no bigger than twice Earth’s size and in the habitable temperature zone to eight or nine. But that’s only from a short search of a small part of our galaxy, so Torres believes that Earth-like planets are common throughout the cosmos, though he cannot prove it yet. Torres likes to include one planet that would bump the new findings from three to four, but Caldwell said that planet may or may not be habitable. It doesn’t matter much. “We do not need to talk about the one or two exoplanets that could be like Earth, we are finding so many,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of Cornell University’s Pale Blue Dot Institute. She wasn’t part of the study. Torres and Caldwell highlighted the two new planets that are closest in size to Earth. The closest, called Kepler 438-b, is only 12 percent larger than Earth and gets about 40 percent more energy from its star than we do from the sun, so it would probably be warmer, Torres said. It tightly circles a small cooler red star with its year lasting only 35 Earth days and the sun in its sky would be red, not yellow. It may hot, but “there are bacteria on Earth that live very comfortably in those temperatures, no problem,” Torres said. The other, Kepler 442-b, is about 34 percent bigger than Earth but gets only two-thirds of the energy from its sun as we do, Torres said. NASA also announced that its planet-hunter telescope confirmed its 1,000th planet outside the solar system, most quite unlike Earth and not in the habitable zone. Added to those discovered by other telescopes, astronomers have now discovered more than 1,800 planets that are outside the solar system. (ap)

Bali police ensures safety foreign tourists DENPASAR - Bali is safe despite the Australian government’s recent policy of issuing a travel advisory to its citizens intending to visit Bali, according to the Bali provincial police. “We have intensified security measures in several vital tourist attractions in Bali. We call on the foreign tourists to not be afraid to visit Bali,” spokesman to the Bali Police Senior Commissioner Hery Wiyanto remarked. Apart from deploying police officers, the Bali police have also deployed intelligence officers at several tourist attractions, Hery revealed. With regard to offering security to the offices of foreign representatives in Bali, Hery said the security measures adopted are still on normal mode. On January 5, the Australian government issued a travel advisory to its citizens keen on visiting Indonesia. In the advisory, the Australian government has urged its citizens to remain on high alert for potential terror attacks in Indonesia. The warning was issued after the United States announced a travel advisory on January 3 for its citizens traveling to Indonesia. (ant)

DENPASAR - Bank Indonesia (BI) predicts the prospect of property business in 2015 remains good. This condition is in line with the expectation at a reasonable price increase in the range of 5 percent to 10 percent. “This year, the prospect of property, particularly the primary home, in our prediction is still good. So, it is in line with the estimated increase in property prices lying in reasonable range of 5 percent to 10 percent,” said Chief Representative of BI for Bali Region, Dewi Setyowati. Such condition occurred because this year some government policies were assessed to positively support business and labor sector, such as the revision of fuel prices, including the fixed fuel subsidy policy despite the fuel price fluctuated with the market price as well as the moderate increase in the minimum wage or a slight increase in the level of 5.09 percent (yoy). “Business condition in 2014 was relatively good. It was predicted to show off good prospects for this year,” she said. Under these conditions, Dewi Setyowati recognized to be in line with high level of demand, especial-

BKSDA cracks down on thieves of volcanic rock at Batur caldera
BANGLI - Burglaries of volcanic rocks in the area of Batur caldera, Kintamani, have been quite rampant. Evidently in 2014, four thieves were prosecuted after being caught digging up and hauling away volcanic rocks in the conservation area. The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) needs to be decisive in taking legal action against such acts because it appears that efforts to dissuade people from stealing based on education does not work. The Conservation Section Head for Region II, Natural Resources Conservation Agency, Ketut Catur Marbawa, explained on Sunday (Jan 11) that the ongoing stealing of volcanic rock by local residents (usually commited at night), could potentially be quite damaging to the geopark region. He said that since the conservation forest had begun to be managed by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency in 2010 his party had in fact conducted education events quite frequently. However, the coaching of residents seems not to have worked, as unscrupulous people are still stealing the black rock. “Starting in 2014, we decided to crack down on thieves of the volcanic rock. We thought that coaching residents on the im-
portance of the rock was enough -but apparently no,” he explained. So far 4 residents have been caught carrying the rock away in trucks. The case is still benign processed by the police. One of the constraints that the Natural Resources Conservation Agency faces, to adequately maintain the 2,075 hectares of protected land, is lack of personel, with only four officers patrolling the entire area. Ketut Catur Marbawa hopes that people living around the Batur caldera will actively participate in maintaining the conservation area. One was to do so is by reporting thieves to Natural Resources Conservation Agency.if need be. Aside from volcanic rock burglary, another problem faced by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency is the use of semipermanent buildings in the area of Jati Temple. For this reason Catur hopes to make the area into a religious block. “We’ve have already approached the community leaders a few times encouraging them to not allow any more semi-permanent structures to be added to the area.” Yet another issue that the Natural Resources Conservation Agency faces is the conversion of forested land into plantations. 3 cases of sexual violence against children occured in 2014 TABANAN - At the beginning of January 2015, several cases of sexual violence against minors were reported. An 11-year-old victim was sexually assaulted 8 times by a perpetrator claiming to be victim’s boyfriend. Although it was claimed to be consensual, the case remains under process of investigation because the status of the victim as a minor. Similar cases also occurred in 2014. The Chief of Women and Children Protection (PPA) of the Tabanan Police, Olandina De Jesus, said that three cases involving sexual violence were handled by the PPA in 2014. The three victims were 13, 15 and 16 years old, respectively. Olan continued to say that the perpetrators were usually people closest to the victim: family, neighbors or a boyfriend. In the three cases handled in 2014, two of the perpetrators were the victim’s elder neighbors, and one of the perpetrators was the victim’s boyfriend. The parents of the victims were the ones to report the crimes to the Tabanan Police. In dealing with the victims,
the PPA of Tabanan Police in cooperation with relevant NGOs were obliged to provide guidance and counseling for the victim’s psychological condition, helping to restore their self confidence as well as preparing the victims to be questioned. This is done to help the victims avoid developing psychiatric problems such as depression or inferiority complexes. Mentoring and counseling are not only provided to the victims but also to their parents so that parents can give support to their children so that they do not fall into similar cases and also so that their self-confidence can be restored. Meanwhile Olan explained that the legal proceedings were still being processed even though the perpertrators are also minors. “Under the prevailing Law, if the victims are still minors, their cases will still be processed,” he said. In case of sexual violence, the perpetrator is defined as those who seduce or want something from the victim. Most perpetrators of sexual abuse on minors, are committed by men. (kmb24)

NEGARA - Fishermen at Anyar hamlet, Air Kuning village, Jembrana, expressed their dismay regarding the annexing of place where their moor their boats. The land on the edge of the beach includes the actual shoreline where fishermen have moored their boats for decades. The tipping point came when a shade giving tree on the beach was cut down by the landowner who also moved one of the fishermen’s boats from the spot. Boat owner, Mispandi, 45, says that he has reported the case to village authorities but has yet to receive a response. He was especially indignant because the tree was planted many years ago and has become the shelter and mooring spot for several different traditional boats and outriggers. After the tree-cutting incident, fishermen became restless “This sort of thing has happened time and time again, from installing the boundary peg to cutting down the tree whereas this land is seashore,” said Mispandi. The land conflict was reported to Negara Police, but Mispandi was asked to resolve the
issue at the village level. “Until now, there has been no response from the village. We don’t know if this is because the spot in question belongs to the BPD,” he complained. Similar complaints were also expressed by Solihin; the chief of neighborhood unit (RT) 09. He has repeatedly asked the landowner not to commit any acts that might disturb residents, let alone kindle conflict with fishermen. However, these warnings have been completely ignored, “In case the boat is hit by waves, who will be responsible for that? At other locations, landowners understand and allow fishing boats to moor on their land,” said Solihin. According to the neighborhood chief, the local community had been very troubled by the landowner
arbitrarily taking action. Fishermen also expressed some fear because the landowner often reports to the authorities. On the other hand, headman of Air Kuning, Samanhuri, confirmed that there was conflict amongst residents under his jurisdiction. He had already agreed to bring together both parties at village office for mediation so that the matter could be resolve peacefully. Unfortunately, the problem escalated with the tree- cutting incident before mediation could take place. Previously Mispandi had himself been reported to the police by the landowner for damaging a pandanus with his fishing boat. At that time, the landowner H. Solihin and Mispandi had reconciled and agreed to replant the pandanus. Solihin had also stated to build a revetment exceeding the boundaries of his land, that made it difficult for fishermen to moor their boats. “As planned, we will arrange for mediation again,” concluded Samhuri. Egypt acquits 26 men in trial over police raid on gays
CAIRO — An Egyptian court on Monday acquitted 26 men arrested in a televised raid last month by police looking for gays at a Cairo public bathhouse, a ruling that set off deafening cheers and jubilation inside the courtroom as some of the defendants uncovered their faces and cried with relief. The trial, which had caused an uproar among activists and rights groups, captured public attention after a pro-government TV network aired scenes of half-naked men being pulled from the bathhouse by police. Same-sex relations are not explicitly prohibited in Egyptian law but homosexuality is a social taboo in the conservative, Muslimmajority country. Same-sex marriage is unheard of. Only in recent years have movies and fiction included gay characters. The men in the bathhouse raid faced various charges, including debauchery and performing indecent public acts. Monday’s verdict came after only three hearings, during which families quarreled with journalists who tried to photograph their relatives in the dock. The courtroom erupted into a frenzy after the word “acquittal” was heard from the judge and women ululated. Scott Long, an American researcher who had followed the case said he was both “shocked and delighted.” “I hope this is a sign that these raids will come to an end,” Long told The Associated Press amid the cheering. “Finally there was a judge who listened to the evidence.” Rights activists say 2014 was the worst year in a decade for Egypt’s gay community, with at least 150 men arrested or put on trial. “They destroyed our lives. God rescued us,” said one of the defendants, who did not give his name to protect his privacy. The trial opened only two weeks after the Dec. 7 raid on the bathhouse, or hammam, and usually quick referral by the general prosecutor. As information gathered, the discovery of the object originated from the cliff land owned by I Wayan Wirta that was flattened with heavy equipment, namely excavator. When the dredging process was carried out by Suparman, the equipment suddenly hit a hard rock which hampered the movement of the equipment. This man from Banyuwangi excavated it carefully and slowly. Ultimately, he found a long object of approximately one meter. With the help of local community, the two objects looking like elephant’s head were taken out. It looked like a fountain because there was a hole from the back to front side and a hole in the front was like a fountain with an ornament of elephant’s head. However, his party could not ensure when the objects were still used. “Seeing from the shape, they look like the fountain of Tirta Empul. Possibly, they were the fountains during the period of royal kingdom,” he said. Now, the two historic objects known as the Jala Duara are still kept at Penataran Sarwasidi Temple, Tampaksiring. Further in-depth research will be carried by Cultural Heritage Agency (BPCB). “We have not been able to verify the age of this object. Balinese community has a special fruit salad or what the socalled rujak. It is made of fresh fruits mixed with a selection of spices to produce a distinctive flavor. At least, there are three flavors used in the sauce namely spicy, sweet and sour. There are many different types of fruit salad whose name adapted to the fruit used as the main ingredient. One of them is Balinese pomelo salad or rujak juwuk Bali. This ingredient or usually called jerungga in Balinese is liked best by many people. In the heat of the sun, this fruit salad is in demand because it produces water tasting sweet mixed with sour. Its lovers are very diverse as well such as children, teenagers, parents to toothless grandparents. When squeezed, it will produce water tasting fresh. The salad is prepared by adding sauces onto the ingredient. Salad of this type is usually sold in roadside modest stalls characterized by the presence of a pestle and mortar on the table. To prepare it, the outer skin of the pomelo should be peeled out. Then, the flesh is removed from the inner skin. Prepare appropriate sauces according to taste. By and large, the sauces in use consist of tamarind paste, shrimp paste, salt and chili to taste. Then, it is added with sweetener like palm sugar. Having mixed, stir them well to produce good flavor. Formerly, people prepared mixed salads with young banana tree, belonging to stony banana variety. Its sauce was also very simple, so that it helped digestion in the stomach smoother. Unfortunately, the Balinese pomelo is increasingly rare today so that it is very difficult to find the bigger ones. Now, it is brought in from Java and other regions in the archipelago. Foreign ministers gather in Berlin to seek Ukraine progress BERLIN — Germany’s foreign minister is hosting his counterparts from Russia, Ukraine and France in an attempt to move forward efforts to calm the Ukrainian crisis and perhaps clear the way for a summit of the countries’ leaders. The meeting planned Monday evening in Berlin follows a flurry of diplomacy including a brief weekend encounter in Paris between the German, French and Ukrainian leaders. German Chancellor Angela Merkel also has spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and met the president of Kazakhstan, the possible host of a four-way summit on Ukraine. Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier are pushing for progress on implementing a much-violated peace deal that was drawn up in Minsk in September. Pakistani school reopens after Taliban massacre of students
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Pakistani children returned on Monday to the school where Taliban gunmen killed 150 of their classmates and teachers last month, clutching their parents’ hands tightly in a poignant symbol of perseverance despite the horrors they had endured. It was the first time the school had reopened since the assault and security was tight. The nation has been reeling from the Dec. 16 terrorist attack in Peshawar — one of the worst Pakistan has experienced. The violence carried out by seven Taliban militants put a spotlight on whether the authorities can end the stubborn insurgency that kills and maims thousands every year. The massacre also horrified parents across the nation and prompted officials to implement tighter security at schools. For Peshawar parents like Abid Ali Shah, Monday morning was especially painful as he struggled to get his sons ready for school, something his wife used to do. She was a teacher at the school and was killed in the violence. Both of his sons attended the school. The youngest was shot in the head but
survived after the militants thought he was dead. “A hollowness in my life is getting greater. I am missing my wife,” Shah said. He said he had wanted to shift his children to a different school or city but decided not to because they still have to take exams this spring: “Everything is ruined here, everything.” His older son, Sitwat Ali Shah, 17, said it wasn’t until he saw his brother break down in tears as they prepared to go to school that he did as well. Sitwat said both he and his brother have trouble sleeping and often wake up, crying for their mother. “Those who have done all this to all of us cannot be called humans,” Sitwat said, adding he still wanted to go back to school and become an air force officer.
A ceremony was held at the school to mark its reopening, but classes were to restart on Tuesday. Security was tight, part of a countrywide effort to boost safety measures at schools in the wake of the attack. Schools around Pakistan have raised their boundary walls, added armed guards and installed metal detectors, although many have questioned why it took such a horrible attack to focus attention on school safety. The government has stepped up military operations in the tribal areas, reinstated the death penalty and allowed military courts to try civilians — all attempts to crack down on terrorism. But in an attack on Monday, gunmen killed seven paramilitary soldiers in the southwestern Baluchistan province, underscoring the dangers the country still faces.(ap)
69 people die after drinking contaminated beer in Mozambique MAPUTO, Mozambique — Authorities in Mozambique say the number of people who died after drinking contaminated traditional beer has risen to 69. Provincial health director, Paula Bernardo, told Radio Mozambique on Monday that 196 people have been admitted to hospitals in the northeastern Tete province. On Sunday evening district health officials said 56 people had died and 49 were hospitalized after drinking the beer at a funeral on Saturday. Pombe, a traditional Mozambican beer, is made from millet or corn flour. The exact source of the contamination is still unknown, but authorities believe the drink was poisoned with crocodile bile during the course of the funeral. INDONESIA Divers retrieve crashed AirAsia jet’s FDR
PANGKALAN BUN - Indonesian divers Monday retrieved the flight data recorder of the AirAsia plane that went down in the Java Sea with 162 people on board, a potential breakthrough in efforts to discover what caused the crash. The recorder, one of two black boxes containing vital information, was brought to the surface early in the morning, said national search and rescue chief Bambang Soelistyo, after a fortnight-long frustrating search often hampered by bad weather. “We succeeded in bringing up part of the black box that we call the flight data recorder,” Soelistyo told reporters in Jakarta. He said it was found under the wreckage of a wing and added that divers were still hunting for the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder. Officials said Sunday that strong ping signals from the black boxes had been detected near an object believed to be the plane’s main body. On Monday improved weather helped divers to retrieve the flight data recorder. It monitors data such as airspeed and heading, while the cockpit voice recorder stores radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit. Both are located near the rear of the plane and designed to survive underwater. Indonesia’s National Transport Safety Committee said the recovered black box would be sent to Jakarta for
a lengthy analysis, to be carried out with French experts and Airbus. It would later be transferred for further analysis to France, where the aircraft manufacturer is headquartered. Flight QZ8501 crashed on December 28 on a short flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. Indonesia’s meteorological agency has said stormy weather likely caused the Airbus A320-200 to go down but a definitive answer is impossible without the data recorders. Forty-eight bodies have been recovered so far, but the weather has hampered efforts to locate all the victims and the wreckage. S.B. JAKARTA - Constitutional Judge Arief Hidayat has been chosen as Constitutional Court (MK) chief for the period between 2015 and 2017. Hidayat, who served as a constitutional judge since 2013, was elected as chief of the MK after acclamation. He was elected to replace Hamdan Zoelva whose term as constitutional judge ended on Wednesday (Jan. 7). Moreover, the three names nominated to serve as vice chief are Patrialis Akbar, Aswanto, and Anwar Usman. In accordance with Article 4 of Law Number 8/2011 on the amendment to Law Number 24/2003 of the MK, the election of the court chief is discussed behind closed doors by nine constitutional judges, who each have the right to nominate and be nominated as chairman of the MK. The nine constitutional judges are Anwar Usman, Arief Hidayat, Aswanto, Maria Farida Indrati, Muhammad Alim, Patrialis Akbar, Waiduddin Adams, I. Dewa Gede Palguna, and Suhartoyo. If the meeting failed to reach a unanimous agreement or acclamation, the decision would have been made through a majority vote during an open plenary meeting. (ant)

Yasuhito Endo, Shinji Okazaki and Keisuke Honda scored in the first half to give Japan a big lead against the tournament debutants in wet and windy conditions at Hunter Stadium. Maya Yoshida scored after the break from Shinji Kagawa’s cross to complete the rout. NEWCASTLE, Australia — Defending champion Japan won its first match of this year’s Asian Cup, beating newcomer Palestine 4-0 Monday in its opening Group D match. Yasuhito Endo, Shinji Okazaki and Keisuke Honda scored in the first half to give Japan a big lead against the tournament debutants in wet and windy conditions at Hunter Stadium. Maya Yoshida scored after the break from Shinji Kagawa’s cross to complete the rout. Ahmed Mahajna was sent off in the 73rd minute to make it a tough first tournament start for the Palestinians, who qualified by winning the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives. SYDNEY - World number eight Caroline Wozniacki pulled out of her first-round match at the Sydney International with a wrist injury on Monday, just a week before the start of the Australian Open. The 24year-old Dane, who lost the final of the Auckland Classic on Saturday, had already had her left wrist strapped when she was forced to retire at 6-4 1-1 down to Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. “I didn’t want to do it worse before Melbourne, so I’m just going to try and get some treatment on it and try and get ready for next week,” Wozniacki told reporters. “I still have a week to go, so hopefully it’ll be fine... Foreign ministers gather in Berlin to seek Ukraine progress BERLIN — Germany’s foreign minister is hosting his counterparts from Russia, Ukraine and France in an attempt to move forward efforts to calm the Ukrainian crisis and perhaps clear the way for a summit of the countries’ leaders. The meeting planned Monday evening in Berlin follows a flurry of diplomacy including a brief weekend encounter in Paris between the German, French and Ukrainian leaders. German Chancellor Angela Merkel also has spoken by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and met the president of Kazakhstan, the possible host of a four-way summit on Ukraine. Merkel and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier are pushing for progress on implementing a much-violated peace deal that was drawn up in Minsk in September. Berlin says a substantial narrowing of differences is needed for a summit to take place. (ap)

Pakistani school reopens after Taliban massacre of students
PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Pakistani children returned on Monday to the school where Taliban gunmen killed 150 of their classmates and teachers last month, clutching their parents’ hands tightly in a poignant symbol of perseverance despite the horrors they had endured. It was the first time the school had reopened since the assault and security was tight. The nation has been reeling from the Dec. 16 terrorist attack in Peshawar — one of the worst Pakistan has experienced. The violence carried out by seven Taliban militants put a spotlight on whether the authorities can end the stubborn insurgency that kills and maims thousands every year. The massacre also horrified parents across the nation and prompted officials to implement tighter security at schools. For Peshawar parents like Abid Ali Shah, Monday morning was especially painful as he struggled to get his sons ready for school, something his wife used to do. She was a teacher at the school and was killed in the violence. Both of his sons attended the school. The youngest was shot in the head but
survived after the militants thought he was dead. “A hollowness in my life is getting greater. I am missing my wife,” Shah said. He said he had wanted to shift his children to a different school or city but decided not to because they still have to take exams this spring: “Everything is ruined here, everything.” His older son, Sitwat Ali Shah, 17, said it wasn’t until he saw his brother break down in tears as they prepared to go to school that he did as well. Sitwat said both he and his brother have trouble sleeping and often wake up, crying for their mother. “Those who have done all this to all of us cannot be called humans,” Sitwat said, adding he still wanted to go back to school and become an air force officer.
A ceremony was held at the school to mark its reopening, but classes were to restart on Tuesday. Security was tight, part of a countrywide effort to boost safety measures at schools in the wake of the attack. Schools around Pakistan have raised their boundary walls, added armed guards and installed metal detectors, although many have questioned why it took such a horrible attack to focus attention on school safety. The government has stepped up military operations in the tribal areas, reinstated the death penalty and allowed military courts to try civilians — all attempts to crack down on terrorism. But in an attack on Monday, gunmen killed seven paramilitary soldiers in the southwestern Baluchistan province, underscoring the dangers the country still faces.(ap)
69 people die after drinking contaminated beer in Mozambique MAPUTO, Mozambique — Authorities in Mozambique say the number of people who died after drinking contaminated traditional beer has risen to 69. Provincial health director, Paula Bernardo, told Radio Mozambique on Monday that 196 people have been admitted to hospitals in the northeastern Tete province. On Sunday evening district health officials said 56 people had died and 49 were hospitalized after drinking the beer at a funeral on Saturday. Pombe, a traditional Mozambican beer, is made from millet or corn flour. The exact source of the contamination is still unknown, but authorities believe the drink was poisoned with crocodile bile during the course of the funeral. INDONESIA Divers retrieve crashed AirAsia jet’s FDR
PANGKALAN BUN - Indonesian divers Monday retrieved the flight data recorder of the AirAsia plane that went down in the Java Sea with 162 people on board, a potential breakthrough in efforts to discover what caused the crash. The recorder, one of two black boxes containing vital information, was brought to the surface early in the morning, said national search and rescue chief Bambang Soelistyo, after a fortnight-long frustrating search often hampered by bad weather. “We succeeded in bringing up part of the black box that we call the flight data recorder,” Soelistyo told reporters in Jakarta. He said it was found under the wreckage of a wing and added that divers were still hunting for the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder. Officials said Sunday that strong ping signals from the black boxes had been detected near an object believed to be the plane’s main body. On Monday improved weather helped divers to retrieve the flight data recorder. It monitors data such as airspeed and heading, while the cockpit voice recorder stores radio transmissions and sounds in the cockpit. Both are located near the rear of the plane and designed to survive underwater. Indonesia’s National Transport Safety Committee said the recovered black box would be sent to Jakarta for
a lengthy analysis, to be carried out with French experts and Airbus. It would later be transferred for further analysis to France, where the aircraft manufacturer is headquartered. Flight QZ8501 crashed on December 28 on a short flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore. Indonesia’s meteorological agency has said stormy weather likely caused the Airbus A320-200 to go down but a definitive answer is impossible without the data recorders. Forty-eight bodies have been recovered so far, but the weather has hampered efforts to locate all the victims and the wreckage. S.B. JAKARTA - Constitutional Judge Arief Hidayat has been chosen as Constitutional Court (MK) chief for the period between 2015 and 2017. Hidayat, who served as a constitutional judge since 2013, was elected as chief of the MK after acclamation. He was elected to replace Hamdan Zoelva whose term as constitutional judge ended on Wednesday (Jan. 7). Moreover, the three names nominated to serve as vice chief are Patrialis Akbar, Aswanto, and Anwar Usman. In accordance with Article 4 of Law Number 8/2011 on the amendment to Law Number 24/2003 of the MK, the election of the court chief is discussed behind closed doors by nine constitutional judges, who each have the right to nominate and be nominated as chairman of the MK. The nine constitutional judges are Anwar Usman, Arief Hidayat, Aswanto, Maria Farida Indrati, Muhammad Alim, Patrialis Akbar, Waiduddin Adams, I. Dewa Gede Palguna, and Suhartoyo. As information gathered, the discovery of the object originated from the cliff land owned by I Wayan Wirta that was flattened with heavy equipment, namely excavator. When the dredging process was carried out by Suparman, the equipment suddenly hit a hard rock which hampered the movement of the equipment. This man from Banyuwangi excavated it carefully and slowly. Ultimately, he found a long object of approximately one meter. With the help of local community, the two objects looking like elephant’s head were taken out. It looked like a fountain because there was a hole from the back to front side and a hole in the front was like a fountain with an ornament of elephant’s head. Allegedly the objects were former fountains at the royal bathing place. However, his party could not ensure when the objects were still used. “Seeing from the shape, they look like the fountain of Tirta Empul. Possibly, they were the fountains during the period of royal kingdom,” he said. Now, the two historic objects known as the Jala Duara are still kept at Penataran Sarwasidi Temple, Tampaksiring. Further in-depth research will be carried by Cultural Heritage Agency (BPCB). “We have not been able to verify the age of this object. Balinese community has a special fruit salad or what the socalled rujak. It is made of fresh fruits mixed with a selection of spices to produce a distinctive flavor. At least, there are three flavors used in the sauce namely spicy, sweet and sour. There are many different types of fruit salad whose name adapted to the fruit used as the main ingredient. One of them is Balinese pomelo salad or rujak juwuk Bali. This ingredient or usually called jerungga in Balinese is liked best by many people. In the heat of the sun, this fruit salad is in demand because it produces water tasting sweet mixed with sour. Its lovers are very diverse as well such as children, teenagers, parents to toothless grandparents. When squeezed, it will produce water tasting fresh. The salad is prepared by adding sauces onto the ingredient. Salad of this type is usually sold in roadside modest stalls characterized by the presence of a pestle and mortar on the table. To prepare it, the outer skin of the pomelo should be peeled out. Then, the flesh is removed from the inner skin. Prepare appropriate sauces according to taste. By and large, the sauces in use consist of tamarind paste, shrimp paste, salt and chili to taste. Then, it is added with sweetener like palm sugar. Having mixed, stir them well to produce good flavor. Formerly, people prepared mixed salads with young banana tree, belonging to stony banana variety. Its sauce was also very simple, so that it helped digestion in the stomach smoother. Unfortunately, the Balinese pomelo is increasingly rare today so that it is very difficult to find the bigger ones. Now, it is brought in from Java and other regions in the archipelago. BKSDA cracks down on thieves of volcanic rock at Batur caldera
BANGLI - Burglaries of volcanic rocks in the area of Batur caldera, Kintamani, have been quite rampant. Evidently in 2014, four thieves were prosecuted after being caught digging up and hauling away volcanic rocks in the conservation area. The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) needs to be decisive in taking legal action against such acts because it appears that efforts to dissuade people from stealing based on education does not work. The Conservation Section Head for Region II, Natural Resources Conservation Agency, Ketut Catur Marbawa, explained on Sunday (Jan 11) that the ongoing stealing of volcanic rock by local residents (usually commited at night), could potentially be quite damaging to the geopark region. He said that since the conservation forest had begun to be managed by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency in 2010 his party had in fact conducted education events quite frequently. However, the coaching of residents seems not to have worked, as unscrupulous people are still stealing the black rock. “Starting in 2014, we decided to crack down on thieves of the volcanic rock. We thought that coaching residents on the im-
portance of the rock was enough -but apparently no,” he explained. So far 4 residents have been caught carrying the rock away in trucks. The case is still benign processed by the police. One of the constraints that the Natural Resources Conservation Agency faces, to adequately maintain the 2,075 hectares of protected land, is lack of personel, with only four officers patrolling the entire area. Ketut Catur Marbawa hopes that people living around the Batur caldera will actively participate in maintaining the conservation area. One was to do so is by reporting thieves to Natural Resources Conservation Agency.if need be. Aside from volcanic rock burglary, another problem faced by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency is the use of semipermanent buildings in the area of Jati Temple. For this reason Catur hopes to make the area into a religious block. “We’ve have already approached the community leaders a few times encouraging them to not allow any more semi-permanent structures to be added to the area.” Yet another issue that the Natural Resources Conservation Agency faces is the conversion of forested land into plantations. 3 cases of sexual violence against children occured in 2014 TABANAN - At the beginning of January 2015, several cases of sexual violence against minors were reported. An 11-year-old victim was sexually assaulted 8 times by a perpetrator claiming to be victim’s boyfriend. Although it was claimed to be consensual, the case remains under process of investigation because the status of the victim as a minor. Similar cases also occurred in 2014. The Chief of Women and Children Protection (PPA) of the Tabanan Police, Olandina De Jesus, said that three cases involving sexual violence were handled by the PPA in 2014. The three victims were 13, 15 and 16 years old, respectively. Olan continued to say that the perpetrators were usually people closest to the victim: family, neighbors or a boyfriend. In the three cases handled in 2014, two of the perpetrators were the victim’s elder neighbors, and one of the perpetrators was the victim’s boyfriend. The parents of the victims were the ones to report the crimes to the Tabanan Police. In dealing with the victims,
the PPA of Tabanan Police in cooperation with relevant NGOs were obliged to provide guidance and counseling for the victim’s psychological condition, helping to restore their self confidence as well as preparing the victims to be questioned. This is done to help the victims avoid developing psychiatric problems such as depression or inferiority complexes. Mentoring and counseling are not only provided to the victims but also to their parents so that parents can give support to their children so that they do not fall into similar cases and also so that their self-confidence can be restored. Meanwhile Olan explained that the legal proceedings were still being processed even though the perpertrators are also minors. “Under the prevailing Law, if the victims are still minors, their cases will still be processed,” he said. In case of sexual violence, the perpetrator is defined as those who seduce or want something from the victim. Most perpetrators of sexual abuse on minors, are committed by men. (kmb24)

NEGARA - Fishermen at Anyar hamlet, Air Kuning village, Jembrana, expressed their dismay regarding the annexing of place where their moor their boats. The land on the edge of the beach includes the actual shoreline where fishermen have moored their boats for decades. The tipping point came when a shade giving tree on the beach was cut down by the landowner who also moved one of the fishermen’s boats from the spot. Boat owner, Mispandi, 45, says that he has reported the case to village authorities but has yet to receive a response. He was especially indignant because the tree was planted many years ago and has become the shelter and mooring spot for several different traditional boats and outriggers. After the tree-cutting incident, fishermen became restless “This sort of thing has happened time and time again, from installing the boundary peg to cutting down the tree whereas this land is seashore,” said Mispandi. The land conflict was reported to Negara Police, but Mispandi was asked to resolve the
issue at the village level. “Until now, there has been no response from the village. We don’t know if this is because the spot in question belongs to the BPD,” he complained. Similar complaints were also expressed by Solihin; the chief of neighborhood unit (RT) 09. He has repeatedly asked the landowner not to commit any acts that might disturb residents, let alone kindle conflict with fishermen. However, these warnings have been completely ignored, “In case the boat is hit by waves, who will be responsible for that? At other locations, landowners understand and allow fishing boats to moor on their land,” said Solihin. According to the neighborhood chief, the local community had been very troubled by the landowner
arbitrarily taking action. Fishermen also expressed some fear because the landowner often reports to the authorities. On the other hand, headman of Air Kuning, Samanhuri, confirmed that there was conflict amongst residents under his jurisdiction. He had already agreed to bring together both parties at village office for mediation so that the matter could be resolve peacefully. Unfortunately, the problem escalated with the tree- cutting incident before mediation could take place. Previously Mispandi had himself been reported to the police by the landowner for damaging a pandanus with his fishing boat. At that time, the landowner H. Solihin and Mispandi had reconciled and agreed to replant the pandanus. Solihin had also stated to build a revetment exceeding the boundaries of his land, that made it difficult for fishermen to moor their boats. “As planned, we will arrange for mediation again,” concluded Samhuri. Egypt acquits 26 men in trial over police raid on gays
CAIRO — An Egyptian court on Monday acquitted 26 men arrested in a televised raid last month by police looking for gays at a Cairo public bathhouse, a ruling that set off deafening cheers and jubilation inside the courtroom as some of the defendants uncovered their faces and cried with relief. The trial, which had caused an uproar among activists and rights groups, captured public attention after a pro-government TV network aired scenes of half-naked men being pulled from the bathhouse by police. Same-sex relations are not explicitly prohibited in Egyptian law but homosexuality is a social taboo in the conservative, Muslimmajority country. Same-sex marriage is unheard of. Only in recent years have movies and fiction included gay characters. The men in the bathhouse raid faced various charges, including debauchery and performing indecent public acts. Monday’s verdict came after only three hearings, during which families quarreled with journalists who tried to photograph their relatives in the dock. The courtroom erupted into a frenzy after the word “acquittal” was heard from the judge and women ululated. Scott Long, an American researcher who had followed the case said he was both “shocked and delighted.” “I hope this is a sign that these raids will come to an end,” Long told The Associated Press amid the cheering. “Finally there was a judge who listened to the evidence.” Rights activists say 2014 was the worst year in a decade for Egypt’s gay community, with at least 150 men arrested or put on trial. “They destroyed our lives. God rescued us,” said one of the defendants, who did not give his name to protect his privacy. The trial opened only two weeks after the Dec. 7 raid on the bathhouse, or hammam, and usually quick referral by the general prosecutor. There are no laws in Egypt criminalizing homosexuality but a decades’ old law criminalizing prostitution is often used in penalizing the gay community. Leave coal, oil in ground for climate’s sake
PARIS - The Middle East must leave 40 percent of its oil reserves in the ground, and China, the US and Russia most of their coal if global warming is to be curbed, researchers said Wednesday. Globally, a third of oil, half of gas and over 80 percent of coal reserves must be left untouched until 2050, according to a novel breakdown of “unburnable” fossil-fuel stocks published in the journal Nature. This is the sole way to meet the UN target of limiting warming to 2.0 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) over pre-Industrial Revolution levels, said co-author Christophe McGlade of University College London. “Policymakers must realise
that their instincts to completely use the fossil fuels within their countries are wholly incompatible with their commitments to the 2 C goal,” he warned. The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that for a good chance of meeting the target, further emissions of Earth-warming greenhouse gases must be limited to about 1,000 billion tonnes (gigatonnes). But global fossil fuel reserves, on current estimates, would emit three times this total if used, said
the study. UN members are negotiating a global carbon-cutting climate pact to be signed in Paris in December. At current rates, emissions are steering the world towards potentially catastrophic warming of 4 C or more, scientists say. “Companies spent over $670 billion (565 billion euros) last year searching for and developing new fossil fuel resources,” said McGlade’s colleague and co-author Paul Ekins.
“They will need to rethink such substantial budgets if policies are implemented to support the 2 C limit, especially as new discoveries cannot lead to increased aggregate production.” For their project, McGlade and Ekins made a best estimate of quantities and locations of oil, gas and coal resources, and then assessed how much could be safely used, per region, up to 2050. They used two scenarios -- one with “widespread deployment” of carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities, a technology in its infancy, and one with no CCS. Even if CCS is widely implemented, over 430 billion barrels of oil must be left unburned, the
pair said. Under this scenario, the Middle East has over half the world’s “unburnable” oil -- more than 260 billion barrels or 38 percent of its stock -- equal to about eight years of global production calculated at 2013 levels of 87 million barrels per day. Central and South America must leave 58 billion barrels alone, Canada 39 billion and the former Soviet states 27 billion. About 95 trillion cubic metres (3,354 trillion cubic feet) of gas should remain unburned, the study found -- again the bulk (46 trillion cubic metres) is held in the Middle East and 31 trillion by former Soviet states. NASA finds more Earth-like planets outside solar system WASHINGTON — Earth has a few more near-twin planets outside our solar system, tantalizing possibilities in the search for extraterrestrial life. Astronomers announced Tuesday that depending on definitions, they have confirmed three or four more planets that are about the same size as Earth and are in the not-too-hot, not-too-cold “Goldilocks Zone” for liquid water to form. These planets are likely to be rocky like Earth, and not gas giants or ice worlds. They get about the same heat from their star as we get from the sun, according to the latest results from NASA’s planet hunting Kepler telescope. But don’t book your flights yet. They may be close to Earth in size and likely temperature in the gargantuan scale of the universe, but they aren’t quite close enough for comfort. Consider two of the new planets, the nearest to Earth discovered to date. If they have atmospheres similar to Earth’s — a big if — one would be a toasty 140 some degrees and the other would hover around zero, said study lead author Guillermo Torres, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Life conceivably could evolve and adapt to those temperatures, he said. Oh, and they aren’t actually within commuting distance of Earth. Those two are 500 and 1,100 light years away; a light year is 5.9 trillion miles. What’s important, said SETI Institute astronomer Douglas Caldwell, a study coauthor who presented the findings at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle, is that astronomers are a bit closer to finding twins of Earth and answering the age-old question: Are we alone? “These planets do exist; we didn’t know that before,” Torres said in a phone interview from Cambridge, Massachusetts. “What
we’re really looking for is signs of life eventually. We’re not there yet. It will take many years but this is the first step.” Torres’ team confirmed earlier discoveries and added new ones, bringing the total known number of planets that are no bigger than twice Earth’s size and in the habitable temperature zone to eight or nine. But that’s only from a short search of a small part of our galaxy, so Torres believes that Earth-like planets are common throughout the cosmos, though he cannot prove it yet. Torres likes to include one planet that would bump the new findings from three to four, but Caldwell said that planet may or may not be habitable. It doesn’t matter much. “We do not need to talk about the one or two exoplanets that could be like Earth, we are finding so many,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of Cornell University’s Pale Blue Dot Institute. She wasn’t part of the study. Torres and Caldwell highlighted the two new planets that are closest in size to Earth. The closest, called Kepler 438-b, is only 12 percent larger than Earth and gets about 40 percent more energy from its star than we do from the sun, so it would probably be warmer, Torres said. It tightly circles a small cooler red star with its year lasting only 35 Earth days and the sun in its sky would be red, not yellow. It may hot, but “there are bacteria on Earth that live very comfortably in those temperatures, no problem,” Torres said. The other, Kepler 442-b, is about 34 percent bigger than Earth but gets only two-thirds of the energy from its sun as we do, Torres said. NASA also announced that its planet-hunter telescope confirmed its 1,000th planet outside the solar system, most quite unlike Earth and not in the habitable zone. Added to those discovered by other telescopes, astronomers have now discovered more than 1,800 planets that are outside the solar system. (ap)

Bali police ensures safety foreign tourists DENPASAR - Bali is safe despite the Australian government’s recent policy of issuing a travel advisory to its citizens intending to visit Bali, according to the Bali provincial police. “We have intensified security measures in several vital tourist attractions in Bali. We call on the foreign tourists to not be afraid to visit Bali,” spokesman to the Bali Police Senior Commissioner Hery Wiyanto remarked. Apart from deploying police officers, the Bali police have also deployed intelligence officers at several tourist attractions, Hery revealed. With regard to offering security to the offices of foreign representatives in Bali, Hery said the security measures adopted are still on normal mode. On January 5, the Australian government issued a travel advisory to its citizens keen on visiting Indonesia. In the advisory, the Australian government has urged its citizens to remain on high alert for potential terror attacks in Indonesia. The warning was issued after the United States announced a travel advisory on January 3 for its citizens traveling to Indonesia. (ant)

This condition is in line with the expectation at a reasonable price increase in the range of 5 percent to 10 percent. “This year, the prospect of property, particularly the primary home, in our prediction is still good. So, it is in line with the estimated increase in property prices lying in reasonable range of 5 percent to 10 percent,” said Chief Representative of BI for Bali Region, Dewi Setyowati. Such condition occurred because this year some government policies were assessed to positively support business and labor sector, such as the revision of fuel prices, including the fixed fuel subsidy policy despite the fuel price fluctuated with the market price as well as the moderate increase in the minimum wage or a slight increase in the level of 5.09 percent (yoy). “Business condition in 2014 was relatively good. It was predicted to show off good prospects for this year,” she said. Under these conditions, Dewi Setyowati recognized to be in line with high level of demand, especial-
ly for small type (= 36) and medium type (> 36-70). TABANAN - The admission fee to the Tanah Lot tourist attraction is considered much cheaper than that of other tourist attractions outside Bali. For this reason, the Tabanan government along with the Tanah Lot customary village heads, plan to increase the admission fee. Management is ready to implement the fee hike anytime but acknowledges that travel agencies and tour guides need some time to integrate the change “Hopefully, the admission fee increase will not be implemented the news has been dissemination to travel agencies, travelers and tour guides” said Operations Manager of Tanah Lot tourist attraction, Toya Adnyana, some time ago. According to Toya, the new admission fee could be increased to USD 5 or about IDR 50,000 per person for foreign travelers from the 15,000-IDR 30,000 per person for foreign travelers that it is now. While domestic travelers would pay between IDR 15,000 and IDR 20,000 per person instead of IDR 7,500-IDR 10,000 per person. If the
proposed fee hike is approved, it could be applied as early as 2015 or 2016. Aside from the plan to the increase the admission fee, Tanah Lot plans to improve its facilites in 2015, including adding more CCTVs in the Southern and Western area of the site. “Right now, we have 16 CCTVs placed at a number of critical points but the south and west remain without cameras,” said Toya. The reserved and VIP parking areas are two other vulnerable points in need of cameras, according to Toya who hopes the governing bodies with respond favorably to this proposal. (kmb24)

GIANYAR – Famers in Gianyar region, continue to face various challenges, ranging from drought to flooding and now trouble getting their hands on urea fertililzer. Made Lonto expressed some of the difficulties faced by farmers in the “voice of Gianyar” section of the Bali Post daily newspaper, Saturday (Jan 10). This farmer from Payangan explained: “I have difficulty in obtaining the scarce urea, plus, the terms and conditions for aquiring it are very troublesome,” he said. Presumably he is referring to the trouble faced by farmers that do not belong to a Group Need Definitive Plan (RDKK). Head of Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Dewi Hariani, on Sunday (Jan11), denied the scarcity of urea in Gianyar region. In 2014, her party actually experienced overstock of urea. However, to gain access to the distribution of the fertilizer, farmers are obliged
to create a Group Need Definitive Plan. “Such a document cannot be created by an individual -only by a subak group, and it must be submitted a month in advance of need”, she explained. According to her, the problem frequently faced in the field is delay in delivery due to late document submission. “As a matter of practice, each company has to follow procedure for urea distribution. The Group Need Definitive Plan must be submitted from retailers to the distributors and then to manufacturers. Only after the plan has been approved, can the fertilizer be distributed to farmers. This flow of information is very confidential so we cannot allow fertilizer to be sold to individuals,” she said. Another phenomenon frequently encountered, said Dewi, was the delay in planting during the recent dry season due to shortages of water. This late planting
and lack of water means that they will need fertilizer this year. “We therefor allocated extra fertilizer to deal with the need which in the end caused an overstock of urea in 2014. “ she said. Data regarding the exact amounts were apparently not available at the office. When asked about the amount of fertilizer allocated to farmers, she said would depend on the proposal of the Group Need Definitive Plan of each subak organization. Regardless, her party nonetheless prepares the amount of fertilizer by referring to the area of agricultural land, say for 14,706 hectares harvesting twice, multiplied by 200 kg of fertilizer for each farmer for example. “Although we have such calculations, the order for fertilizers is sometimes uncertain, especially when farmers delay their planting,” she said, adding that the price of RPK fertilizer is IDR 2,300, and urea costs IDR 1,800 per kg. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

George Clooney accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Golden Globes Sunday by honoring others — his Hollywood colleagues, his new wife and millions who marched in the wake of attacks in France last week. DeMille Award, an honor that has gone to the likes of Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Alfred Hitchcock and, in recent years, to Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman and Robert DeNiro.
