LOS ANGELES — The Golden Globe Awards are put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — a group of journalists who cover movies for international publications — so it’s fitting to pay special tribute to international filmmakers. The HFPA did that Saturday at its 11th annual Foreign Language Film Symposium, which drew the directors of four of the five foreign-language films nominated at Sunday’s Golden Globes. Abdellatif Kechiche of France (“Blue is the Warmest Color”), Thomas Vinterberg of Denmark (“The Hunt”), Paolo Sorrentino of Italy (“The Great Beauty”) and Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi of Iran (“The Past”) discussed their work with each other and an audience of fans at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, whose film “The Wind Rises” is also up for a Globe, wasn’t able to attend. Apart from Vinterberg, who also
works in English, each director was accompanied by an interpreter. It is indicated by the fact that a lot of tourism villages are unable to become self-sufficient tourism village and can draw the interest of travelers. Actually, the special interest tourism will contribute to the prosperity of society existing in the customary village. A member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, said that Bali government in this regard needed to more focus on developing the tourism village. So far, there had been no tourism villages managed optimally. Most tourism villages emerged without being poised with the supporting human resources,
facilities and infrastructure. “Many customary villagers in Bali are on the poverty line. The development of tourist object is expected to help prosper the communities of customary village in the vicinity,” said Nyoman Kandia in Denpasar. Kandia judged the development of tourism village should be done by people who understood about
the tourism conditions of each region, not by the outsiders. Aside from not being close to the local community, they equally did not know about the culture and character of the local people. “At the provincial level, there has been a help for customary villages across Bali. County and municipal government also needs to provide the assistance for customary villages. It is particularly given through the management of tourist attraction in the county / municipality. It is expected to help customary villages in the vicinity,” he said. According to him, by developing tourism village, the life of the surrounding communities would
rise, including the customary village controlling the territory of the tourist attraction. The results of admission fee collection should be used for the welfare of communities in the customary village. “From the revenue of the tourist attraction management, for example, 30 percent must be allocated to help the customary villages in the vicinity. Meanwhile, the remaining 70 percent of the revenue can be returned to the county/municipality for financing the overall development, including improvement of the road infrastructure to the tourist attraction,” he explained. He said that 30 percent of the support of the tourist object manage-
ment would be able to improve the economy of customary villagers and alleviate the burden of customary villagers living on the poverty line. “I encourage the tourism components to develop tourism villages because foreign tourists are more interested in enjoying the object. Ultimately, it will have an impact on the local community because the development of tourism village will be able to directly empower the residents in improving their economy,” he said. He said the management of the accommodation by local community was very suitable for backpackers.

As an expression of devotion to the god of creatures, Balinese residents consecrated livestock and pets on the Tumpek Kandang day falling on Saturday (Jan 11). On that day, Balinese residents raising livestock such as cows, pigs and others consecrated theirs with special offerings. Besides, their beloved pets such as birds and rare animals bred were also consecrated. Made Sudirta, one of the bird hobbyists, when met at his home after consecrating dozens of birds, said that he never forgot to consecrate his birds on Tumpek Kandang. Before
the ceremony was performed, he took down his birds in the cage. First of all, those birds were bathed and the cage was cleaned up. Meanwhile, the offerings had been prepared from the morning. The oblation presented on the Tumpek Kandang day was usually adjusted to local tradition in each region. However, the oblation of Tumpek Kandang in Buleleng was equipped with blayag and other supplies. Entering the midday, dozens of pet birds along with their cage were consecrated solemnly. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

3-D printing set to break out of niche Associated Press Writer
LAS VEGAS — Some of the oddest items on display this week at the International CES gadget show were edible, origami-like sculptures made of sugar, their shapes so convoluted as to baffle the eye. The treats are one of many signs that we’ll all be getting a taste of 3-D printing soon —and the phenomenon won’t be relegated to the realm of engineers and tech enthusiasts. The sugar sculptures are the output of the ChefJet Pro, the first commercial, kitchen-ready food printer. It looks like an oven, and deposits sugar layer by layer in a tray, then melts the parts intended for the sculpture with water so they solidify much like sugar in a bowl will harden with moisture. Ink can be selectively added to the water so the sculptures come out in full color — a feature sure to set the minds of wedding and party planners spinning. Next to the geometric sculptures was a wedding cake supported by a delicate lattice-work tower of sugar that would be nearly impossible to make by conventional means. Oh, and the printer can print in chocolate too. 3D Systems Inc., a Rock Hill, South Carolina, company, expects to sell the full-color printer for about $100,000 in the latter half of this year, and a monochrome version for half that price. Last year, there were only a handful of 3-D printing companies at the gadget show. This year, there were thirty, and the organizers had to turn others away because they couldn’t fit them in. The 3-D printing area of the show floor drew dense crowds that gawked at the printers and their creations, which ranged from toys to tea cups to iPhone cases.
Melissa Spencer, a jewelry designer from Los Angeles, was at the show to look for a printer. 3-D printers have been used in jewelry-making for a long time, but high prices and poor resolution have limited their use. With prices down and output quality up, it’s now possible for an independent designer to buy her own printer, Spencer said. The printers focus bright ultraviolet light into liquid resin, setting it. That takes time. One printer maker cited 7 hours for a batch of five rings. The plastic pieces are then used to create molds for molten silver, gold or platinum. Spencer is now toying with the idea of abandoning the reuse of molds, and instead using the power of a 3-D printer to make every piece a one-off, unique design, customized to the buyer. It helps that she can show the plastic prototypes to the customer before casting. With 3-D printing, “we’re moving to a world of mass customization,” said Shawn Dubravac, an analyst for the Consumer Electronics Association, which puts on the show. What started with custom-printed T-shirts a la CafePress can now happen in all kinds of industries, he added. It’s still a small field, though. He expects that just under 100,000 3-D printers will be sold in 2014.

DALLAS — A permit to hunt an endangered African black rhino sold for $350,000 at a Dallas auction held to raise money for conservation efforts but criticized by wildlife advocates. Steve Wagner, a spokesman for the Dallas Safari Club, which sponsored the closed-door event Saturday night, confirmed the sale of the permit for a hunt in the African nation of Namibia. He declined to name the buyer. The Safari Club’s executive director, Ben Carter, has defended the auction, saying all money raised will go toward protecting the species. He also said the rhino that the winner will be allowed to hunt is old, male and nonbreeding — and that the animal was likely to be targeted for removal anyway because it was becoming aggressive and threatening other wildlife.
But the auction drew howls from critics, including wildlife and animal rights groups, and the FBI said it was investigating death threats against members of the club. Officials from the Humane Society and the International Fund for Animal Welfare have said that while culling can be appropriate in abundant animal populations, all black rhinos should be protected, given their endangered status. An estimated 4,000 black rhinos remain in the wild, down from 70,000 in the 1960s. Nearly 1,800 are in Namibia, according to the Safari Club. Critics have also said any hunting of a rhino sends a bad message to the public. “This auction is telling the world that an American will pay anything to kill their species,” Jeffrey Flocken, North American regional director of the Massachusetts-based IFAW, said
this past week. “This is, in fact, making a spectacle of killing an endangered species.” The auction took place in downtown Dallas under tight security. Organizers hoped to at least break the previous high bid for one of the permits in Namibia, which was $223,000, and had said the amount could be as high as $1 million. The nation offers five permits each year, and the one auctioned Saturday was the first to be made available for purchase outside of Namibia. The winning bidder could have come from anywhere in the world, and at least some bidders were expected to enter by phone. About 40 protesters gathered early Saturday evening outside the convention center where the auction and a pre-auction dinner were to take place. They held signs and chanted. Most dispersed by just after 6 p.m. CST.

Fire destroys ancient Tibetan town in SW China

BEIJING — A fire that raged for nearly 10 hours razed an ancient Tibetan town in southwest China that’s popular with tourists, burning down hundreds of buildings after fire engines failed to get onto the narrow streets, state media and witnesses said. There was no immediate report of any casualties, and the cause of the fire was not yet known. State media, citing local authorities, said the blaze started in a guesthouse and was ruled accidental. The fire broke out at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the ancient Tibetan quarter of Dukezong, which dates back more than 1,000 years and is known for its preserved cobbled streets, ancient structures and Tibetan culture. Dukezong is part of scenic Shangri-La county in Deqen prefecture. Once called Gyaitang Zong, the county renamed itself Shangri-La in 2001, hoping to draw tourists by the reference to the mythical Himalayan land described in James Hilton’s 1933 novel. Like
hundreds of Chinese cities and counties, Shangri-La renovated its old neighborhood, Dukezong, turning it into a tourist attraction filled with shops and guesthouses. BUSINESS TOKYO - Toyota Motor is aiming to produce more than 10 million vehicles in 2014, a bullish target that could boost other industries in Japan, a report said Saturday. The Toyota group’s production may fall temporarily after April, when Japan increases the consumption tax from five to eight percent, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said. But the impact of the tax hike should be blunted by a lowering of the automobile acquisition tax that will also become effective from the new fiscal year starting April, the Asahi said. With Japan’s economic recovery set to remain solid, Toyota expects its production will pick up from the autumn to achieve the target, the Asahi said. “Toyota’s bullish stance could cause ripple effects to other industries,” the Asahi said. Toyota is Japan’s biggest
manufacturer. Its health could affect steelmakers and parts suppliers of all kinds, as well as the economy of the central Japan, where the company is based. In 2013, Toyota aimed to produce a record 10.12 million vehicles, after it overtook General Motors in 2012 to regain the title of world’s biggest automaker. “The Fed will continue to play a critical role in restoring and maintaining the health of the economy, and I look forward, if confirmed by the Senate, to working to the best of my ability with Janet Yellen and my future colleagues to achieve its policy goals,” he said in a statement. The nominations would bring the Fed board of governors up to a full complement of seven; one seat has been empty since August when governor Elizabeth Duke left. But another governor, Sarah Raskin, is also poised to depart. She was nominated by Obama last year as deputy secretary of the Treasury, and is awaiting Senate confirmation for that position. The new lineup at the Fed takes charge at a complicated time for the US economy and Fed monetary policy. The central bank needs to balance reining in its stimulus and normalizing policy without stalling

29 homes of residents damaged AMLAPURA - A tornado suddenly crashed Subagan, Karangasem, Friday (Jan 10) around 12:30 a.m. As a result, at least 29 houses at BTN Wahyu Permai housing complex, Subagan and eight other houses at Subagan village were broken. The Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Nyoman Sutirtayasa, on the sidelines of his bustles to lead his team to record the damaged homes said that no casualties were reported in the incident. Only one resident suffered abrasion injury as to be exposed by a fallen roof tile. Sudden brunt of the tornado made local residents fall into commotion. Kids were scared. At the time of incident, condition of the housing remained relatively quiet as most inhabitants had not come home from the office. Few times after the brunt of the tornado, the inhabitants rushed to go home. They got information from their neighbors if the housing complex was hit by tornado. Later on, the BPBD team arrived at the location. Homeowners found their roof tile destroyed and flying around. Many roof tiles were falling down,
while garage roofs made of zinc or asbestos sheet or canopies were destroyed. There was a canopy missing from the location and then found hundreds of meters away from the house owner. Of dozens of the damaged homes in the BTN Wahyu Permai housing complex, the most badly damaged homes belonged to Wayan Putu, Adi Kusmawanto, Samhadi and Wayan Dwija. Roof tile of an official Edi Setyadi flew and also fallen down by coconut. Similarly, the house of a driver who served in Amlapura Prosecutor Office, Nyoman Ardana, was fallen down by dried coconut. A number of residents such as Edi Setyadi and Putu Wayan immediately climbed up after the brunt of the tornado to replace and install their roof tiles. They quickly repaired the roof tiles, so the house was not flushed by the rain because it was cloudy and about to rain.
One of the residents whose house survived from the tornado, Ni Kadek Swandewi, said she was calling her family. Suddenly, she heard a roar of wind from the west to the east. She also saw the rubbish in the rice field flying around in the sky. Shortly after that, the wind was increasingly stronger and tackled the park and people’s houses in the west. Wayan Cita and the Commander of Karangasem Military Region Wayan Jaya Antara who lived at the local neighborhood said the tornado crashing the housing complex lasted about 10 minutes. At that time, the television antenna, satellite dish antenna and roof made of zinc, asbestos and canopy were flying around in the sky. Some residents said they were afraid of staying outside the house for fear of being afflicted by roof tile or zinc sheets. Based on the data collection by BPBD team at the BTN Wahyu Permai, a total of 21 homes were damaged ranging from mild to severe condition. NEGARA - Amerthasari Temple located about 1.5 km south of Negara town is one of the Dang Khayangan temples in Jembrana. From time immemorial to the present, the temple situating amid the customary settlement of Lokasari, or precisely Mertasari hamlet, Loloan Timur, Negara, is venerated by the subak members. It is reflected at the beginning of each planting season. To keep away their plants from diseases, residents are always saying prayers and starting their activities from the temple. It is a universal temple because it is used to venerate a great religious teacher, Danghyang Nirartha and closely associated with his pilgrimage to the Island of Bali. Building of this temple has been renovated in 1961 but in 1965 the temple building was abandoned and the renovation was totally discontinued. Ultimately, on July 14, 1976, the entire building collapsed as hit by earthquake. After that, four customary villages were responsible for the temple existence, namely the BB Agung, Puseh Agung of Banjar Tengah village, Kertha Jaya customary village of Pendem village, and Lokasari customary village of Loloan Timur village. At the beginning of the Merthasari Temple and before the renovation in 1965, there was only one temple located under a large banyan tree. Priest of the Merthasari Temple, Mangku Nendra, said that previously there was a small pond around the temple. After the renovation, the pond was moved and a meru shrine was established. Now, it has been added with a Padma shrine on the pond. Meanwhile, water of the pond is taken modernly from the ground with the depth of about 15 meters, and then flowed under the Padma shrine. As a matter of fact, it was named Amerthasari Temple. However, for consideration of easier pronunciation, it was then called Merthasari. The current temple priest, denoting the third generation, mentioned the meaning of Amerthasari was that Amertha meant the whole foods, while Sari meant the essence. Mangku Nendra is the successor of the previous temple priest, namely Nengah Netra who was also his deceased father. Meanwhile, the first was still unclear
because the temple was still not restored at that time. At the moment, the Dang Khayangan Amerthasari Temple has some shrines, namely the Ratu Nyoman, Padmasana, Meru, Pepelik, Taksu and Dewa Ayu Manik Galih dedicated to venerate the Goddess Sri. Genesis of the temple has something to do with Danghyang Nirartha. When arriving in Bali, Pedanda Sakti taught religion at Gede Perancak Temple where currently the Dang Khayangan Perancak Temple has been moved to Tanjung Tangis. At that time, he asked the monkeys where there was another village. The monkey responded by facing north and there laid a village called Budeng. There lived black monkey or Ijah. As soon as arriving at the village, he asked again where there was a village, and the monkeys were facing the west, now becoming the location of the Merthasari Temple. When arriving at the village, he taught the people about agriculture, farming and trade. The Telaga Taman was a very fertile area. Religious life was quite good. In this area, there were five sanctums. In the long run, it turned into Amerthasari village and is now called Mertasari. Now, the temple whose anniversary falls on Anggara Kasih (Tuesday) Perangbakat is venerated by four customary villages namely the Lokasari (Mertasari), Dauh Waru, Pendem and Batu Agung. Mangku added that other than the temple, there was also the Taman Temple that formerly was a pond. “In days of yore, there was a temple located beneath the banyan tree,” explained Nendra. Aside from the six shrines existing today, the temple sitting on the area of 1800 square meters also has a Peselang pavilion to place gamelan instrument, Piasan, storing chamber and the easternmost is pavilion of Banten Piodalan (oblation). In the past, most of the supporting devotees were farmers, but now they are from four customary villages and even from beyond Bali. As the existing plan, this temple area will be expanded to the current parking lot. After the land acquisition, it will become about 3,000 square meters. Renovation and expansion of the temple area will include the temple building, construction of base fence, parking lot expansion, the arrangement of temple landscaping, as well as the wantilan hall. Zagreb - Croatia drew a record number of tourists, mainly to its island-studded Adriatic coastline, in 2013, a minister said on Friday, contributing growth to an economy struggling to recover and reduce a big public deficit. The number of tourists rose by 5.5 percent from the figure for 2012 and to a record total of 12.4 million people, most of whom were from Germany, Slovenia and Austria. Tourism has developed into a key part of the economy since the former Yugoslav republic gained independence in 1991. Tourists accounted for about 72 million overnight stays or 4.1 percent more than in the previous year.The figures also showed that the “main tourist season ... is extending” beyond the July-August summer period, Tourism Minister Darko Lorencin said in a statement. Croatia also registered a growth in tourism income which totalled 6.5
billion euros ($8.8 billion) during the first nine months of 2013 or 4.7 percent more than in the same period of 2012, he said.For the whole of last year, the figure is expected to exceed 7.0 billion euros for the first time since 2008 when the global economic crisis hit, Lorencin added. Head of the Information Data and Public Relations of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutop Purwo Nugroho said in a text message to Antara here on Saturday the volcanic ash became mud when rain fell so that vehicles faced difficulties in passing on the roads. He said Mt Sinabung’s volcanic tremors were still high, expressing fear that the mount would erupt again. On Saturday, Mt Sinabung erupted several times belching volcanic materials with varied height up to 5km. It was accompanied with hot clouds moving to the southeastern and southern directions at a distance of of about 4.5 km and to the eastern direction at a distance of one km. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated in a text message last Monday
that the volcanic activity of Mount Sinabung had increased the previous day on Sunday, January 5, erupting 106 times. Besides the eruption, Sutopo added, the volcanic activity of Mount Sinabung had also caused 1,545 times of hybrid quakes and produced hot clouds 426 times. The number of hybrid earthquakes had increased, creating a lava dome on the volcano. Even the lava dome was seen and had started melting at 500 meters east of the crater. Sutopo pointed out that if the lava under the dome was still there, then the hot clouds will also continue spreading, which eventually spread toward the east. The mountain also spewed around 2 to 6 centimeters of ma-
terials at a length of more than 5 kilometers. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center has been monitoring the volcano’s eruption and has reported the development of the volcanic activities to the BNPB, the North Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Karo authorities. The current emergency status of Mount Sinabung is at the fourth level or “Warning” status, which bans local villagers from doing any activities within the radius of five kilometers from the volcano’s crater. BNPB has asked the residents around Mount Sinabung to keep alert and obey the mitigation instruction from the officials in the area.

BOGOR - Indonesia’s president signed off on a controversial mineral ore export ban Saturday after an 11thhour easing of the policy following opposition from miners and warnings it would hit state coffers, cabinet ministers said. Ministers announced late Saturday night that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had signed the watered down version of the regulation just an hour before it came into effect. The government had originally proposed a blanket ban on the export of certain raw minerals, which also included concentrates, but the revised version would ban ore only and allow concentrates to be exported for the next three years. This means many miners -- including US giant Freeport McMoRan, the biggest miner operating in resourcerich Indonesia -- can continue to export. Exports of some key metals, such as nickel and bauxite, are still set to
be banned in the nearer future, which may affect a number of miners, the Indonesian Mining Association warned. “Starting from 00:00, January 12, 2014, the export of ore is prohibited,” Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said. Indonesia’s ban on the export of unprocessed mineral ore was aimed at creating added value to the lucrative industry, meaning more jobs and profits would stay in Indonesia. The proposed ban prompted strong opposition from both foreign and domestic miners, some of whom dubbed the policy “nationalistic”, and warned the demands were unrealistic and would lead to widespread closures and lay-offs in the industry. The government has been scrambling to ease the ban in recent weeks, concluding it was unlikely to have the desired effect and would instead be a drain on state revenues in lost tax and royalties. Under the regulation, miners will
also be obliged to build smelters by 2017, which some in the industry have complained is costly and economically unviable. Industry Minister M.S. Hidayat said that the government would impose taxes on mineral exports until 2017, when companies will have built smelters and will no longer need to export ore. “We will slap on an export tax, and every year the tax will get progressively higher,” he said. The energy, finance and trade ministries are due to reveal more precise details of the revised ban. The export ban was announced several years ago but its implementation was delayed to give miners time to fulfil the requirement of building smelters to process their ore before exporting. But miners complained this would involve huge investments and that existing infrastructure was not up to the task. Most took little action, betting that Jakarta would back away from the policy.

For Indonesian jihadists, Syrian civil war beckons Associated Press
JAKARTA — The young Indonesian was raised in an extremist household and graduated from a boarding school notorious for teaching generations of terrorists. So it was perhaps no surprise that when Muhammad Fakhri Ihsani left to study in Pakistan, the lure of jihad proved inescapable. But the 21-year-old didn’t sneak into nearby Afghanistan or the lawless border areas, as scores of other foreigners have in recent years. Indonesian authorities believe that after flying to Turkey, he and three other Indonesian students traveled overland to Syria to fight there with fellow countrymen and jihadists from all over the world. Their journey in August shows how determined some Indonesians are to join what has become the new theater of choice for international jihadists. It also points to an emerging threat for Southeast Asian authorities, who have successfully clamped down on militants in recent years, largely preventing them from forging links with their brethren overseas. While security agencies in Europe and beyond are worried about militants returning from Syria, Indonesia knows only too well how foreign battlefields, training opportunities and contact with al-Qaida can lead to deadly results. Indonesian veterans of the Afghan jihad spearheaded attacks in the 2000s against local and Western targets, including nightclub bombings on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people. The Syrian conflict is also helping fuel an increasingly bitter hate campaign against Shias in Sunni-majority Indonesia, where until a few years ago sectarian divisions, let alone conflict, were largely unheard of. Syrian veterans are only likely to exacerbate this. “We have to learn from our bitter experience in the past,” said Ansyaad Mbai, head of the country’s anti-terror agency. “Every Indonesian who ends up in Syria needs to be watched. We have to anticipate the fact that when they return they will have new abilities and skills in warfare.” In interviews, Mbai and two other Indonesian anti-terror officials estimated there were around 50 Indonesian militants fighting against the regime of Bashar Assad, out of up to 11,000 foreigners believed to have become opposition fighters. They said that number is expected to grow. Many were already living or studying in the Middle East when they left. The estimate was based on information from Syrian authorities and their own investigations in Indonesia and Turkey.Indonesian humanitarian groups staffed by hardliners or those with known links to extremists have been raising funds across Indonesia with little transparency. Some are traveling to regions of Syria under the control of militants, treating fighters and handing out cash and relief funds to civilians and local authorities. One organization has traveled at least eight times to the front line in Latakia region, a stronghold of the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, according to their literature. Indonesia has more Muslims than any other nation, but the brand and practice of Islam is markedly different from the austere version common in parts of the Middle East and South Asia. Militant Islam has a long history in Indonesia, dating back to the country’s birth in 1945, but it has struggled to gain significant followers even as the torch of jihad has been handed down through the generations. The Ngruki boarding school, on the main island of Java, and its network of teachers and ex-students have been central to militant activity in the country since the early 1990s. A close look at those taking part — and advocating for — the war in Syria reveals it remains a central node of extremism, apparently intent on making Syria a new venue for those wishing to take part in jihad. Ihsani and the three other Indonesians who left Pakistan with him attended Ngruki. The first Indonesian known to be killed in the conflict, Riza Fardi, was also a graduate. His death was reported on Arabic jihadi websites in late November, along with a photo of him taken in the region, smiling with other fighters. The head of the organization nationwide, Abu Bakar Bashir, is serving a 15-year jail sentence for supporting the establishment of a militant training camp. From behind bars, the cleric issued a call for jihad to Syria year. A sustained crackdown by Indonesian authorities since 2002 has reduced the threat of large-scale terrorism against Western or civilian targets in Indonesia and elsewhere in the region. But small groups of militants continue to plot, train for and carry out attacks, mostly against police targets, across the country of 240 million people.Syria represents a rare training and battle opportunity for the current generation of Indonesian militants.

MILAN — Relegation-threatened Bologna held Lazio to a goalless draw in Serie A on Saturday in Davide Ballardini’s first match in charge of the home side. Ballardini, who coached Lazio for half a season, replaced the sacked Stefano Pioli on Wednesday and immediately steered Bologna to only its second point in five matches. PARIS — Although defending champion Paris Saint-Germain moved five points clear at the top of the French league after a hard-fought 2-1 win at last-place Ajaccio on Saturday, coach Laurent Blanc was far from happy with the overall performance. Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi and France midfielder Blaise Matuidi scored, with star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic setting up both despite having a poor game by his high standards. Forward Eduardo gave Ajaccio the lead in the sixth minute after being set up by right winger Benjamin Andre, and the Corsican side looked comfortable in the first half, with the lively Johan Cavalli causing problems with his probing runs from midfield. “We needed to play well in the first 20 minutes, which we didn’t do, and then we conceded the goal,” Blanc said. “We could have wrapped it up in the second half as we had a few chances, but Ajaccio really made it difficult for us. “What annoys me is that we were vulnerable every time Ajaccio attacked. Zagreb - Croatia drew a record number of tourists, mainly to its island-studded Adriatic coastline, in 2013, a minister said on Friday, contributing growth to an economy struggling to recover and reduce a big public deficit. The number of tourists rose by 5.5 percent from the figure for 2012 and to a record total of 12.4 million people, most of whom were from Germany, Slovenia and Austria. Tourism has developed into a key part of the economy since the former Yugoslav republic gained independence in 1991. Tourists accounted for about 72 million overnight stays or 4.1 percent more than in the previous year.The figures also showed that the “main tourist season ... is extending” beyond the July-August summer period, Tourism Minister Darko Lorencin said in a statement. Croatia also registered a growth in tourism income which totalled 6.5
billion euros ($8.8 billion) during the first nine months of 2013 or 4.7 percent more than in the same period of 2012, he said.For the whole of last year, the figure is expected to exceed 7.0 billion euros for the first time since 2008 when the global economic crisis hit, Lorencin added. Head of the Information Data and Public Relations of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutop Purwo Nugroho said in a text message to Antara here on Saturday the volcanic ash became mud when rain fell so that vehicles faced difficulties in passing on the roads. He said Mt Sinabung’s volcanic tremors were still high, expressing fear that the mount would erupt again. On Saturday, Mt Sinabung erupted several times belching volcanic materials with varied height up to 5km. It was accompanied with hot clouds moving to the southeastern and southern directions at a distance of of about 4.5 km and to the eastern direction at a distance of one km. that the volcanic activity of Mount Sinabung had increased the previous day on Sunday, January 5, erupting 106 times. Besides the eruption, Sutopo added, the volcanic activity of Mount Sinabung had also caused 1,545 times of hybrid quakes and produced hot clouds 426 times. The number of hybrid earthquakes had increased, creating a lava dome on the volcano. Even the lava dome was seen and had started melting at 500 meters east of the crater. BOGOR - Indonesia’s president signed off on a controversial mineral ore export ban Saturday after an 11thhour easing of the policy following opposition from miners and warnings it would hit state coffers, cabinet ministers said. Ministers announced late Saturday night that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had signed the watered down version of the regulation just an hour before it came into effect. The government had originally proposed a blanket ban on the export of certain raw minerals, which also included concentrates, but the revised version would ban ore only and allow concentrates to be exported for the next three years. This means many miners -- including US giant Freeport McMoRan, the biggest miner operating in resourcerich Indonesia -- can continue to export. Exports of some key metals, such as nickel and bauxite, are still set to
be banned in the nearer future, which may affect a number of miners, the Indonesian Mining Association warned. “Starting from 00:00, January 12, 2014, the export of ore is prohibited,” Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said. Indonesia’s ban on the export of unprocessed mineral ore was aimed at creating added value to the lucrative industry, meaning more jobs and profits would stay in Indonesia. The proposed ban prompted strong opposition from both foreign and domestic miners, some of whom dubbed the policy “nationalistic”, and warned the demands were unrealistic and would lead to widespread closures and lay-offs in the industry. The government has been scrambling to ease the ban in recent weeks, concluding it was unlikely to have the desired effect and would instead be a drain on state revenues in lost tax and royalties. Under the regulation, miners will
also be obliged to build smelters by 2017, which some in the industry have complained is costly and economically unviable. Industry Minister M.S. Hidayat said that the government would impose taxes on mineral exports until 2017, when companies will have built smelters and will no longer need to export ore. “We will slap on an export tax, and every year the tax will get progressively higher,” he said. The energy, finance and trade ministries are due to reveal more precise details of the revised ban. The export ban was announced several years ago but its implementation was delayed to give miners time to fulfil the requirement of building smelters to process their ore before exporting. But miners complained this would involve huge investments and that existing infrastructure was not up to the task. Most took little action, betting that Jakarta would back away from the policy.

JAKARTA — The young Indonesian was raised in an extremist household and graduated from a boarding school notorious for teaching generations of terrorists. So it was perhaps no surprise that when Muhammad Fakhri Ihsani left to study in Pakistan, the lure of jihad proved inescapable. But the 21-year-old didn’t sneak into nearby Afghanistan or the lawless border areas, as scores of other foreigners have in recent years. Indonesian authorities believe that after flying to Turkey, he and three other Indonesian students traveled overland to Syria to fight there with fellow countrymen and jihadists from all over the world. Their journey in August shows how determined some Indonesians are to join what has become the new theater of choice for international jihadists. It also points to an emerging threat for Southeast Asian authorities, who have successfully clamped down on militants in recent years, largely preventing them from forging links with their brethren overseas. While security agencies in Europe and beyond are worried about militants returning from Syria, Indonesia knows only too well how foreign battlefields, training opportunities and contact with al-Qaida can lead to deadly results. Indonesian veterans of the Afghan jihad spearheaded attacks in the 2000s against local and Western targets, including nightclub bombings on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people. The Syrian conflict is also helping fuel an increasingly bitter hate campaign against Shias in Sunni-majority Indonesia, where until a few years ago sectarian divisions, let alone conflict, were largely unheard of. Syrian veterans are only likely to exacerbate this. “We have to learn from our bitter experience in the past,” said Ansyaad Mbai, head of the country’s anti-terror agency. “Every Indonesian who ends up in Syria needs to be watched. We have to anticipate the fact that when they return they will have new abilities and skills in warfare.” In interviews, Mbai and two other Indonesian anti-terror officials estimated there were around 50 Indonesian militants fighting against the regime of Bashar Assad, out of up to 11,000 foreigners believed to have become opposition fighters. They said that number is expected to grow. Many were already living or studying in the Middle East when they left. The estimate was based on information from Syrian authorities and their own investigations in Indonesia and Turkey.Indonesian humanitarian groups staffed by hardliners or those with known links to extremists have been raising funds across Indonesia with little transparency. Some are traveling to regions of Syria under the control of militants, treating fighters and handing out cash and relief funds to civilians and local authorities. One organization has traveled at least eight times to the front line in Latakia region, a stronghold of the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front, according to their literature. Indonesia has more Muslims than any other nation, but the brand and practice of Islam is markedly different from the austere version common in parts of the Middle East and South Asia. Militant Islam has a long history in Indonesia, dating back to the country’s birth in 1945, but it has struggled to gain significant followers even as the torch of jihad has been handed down through the generations. The Ngruki boarding school, on the main island of Java, and its network of teachers and ex-students have been central to militant activity in the country since the early 1990s. A close look at those taking part — and advocating for — the war in Syria reveals it remains a central node of extremism, apparently intent on making Syria a new venue for those wishing to take part in jihad. Ihsani and the three other Indonesians who left Pakistan with him attended Ngruki. The first Indonesian known to be killed in the conflict, Riza Fardi, was also a graduate. His death was reported on Arabic jihadi websites in late November, along with a photo of him taken in the region, smiling with other fighters. The head of the organization nationwide, Abu Bakar Bashir, is serving a 15-year jail sentence for supporting the establishment of a militant training camp. From behind bars, the cleric issued a call for jihad to Syria year. A sustained crackdown by Indonesian authorities since 2002 has reduced the threat of large-scale terrorism against Western or civilian targets in Indonesia and elsewhere in the region. But small groups of militants continue to plot, train for and carry out attacks, mostly against police targets, across the country of 240 million people.Syria represents a rare training and battle opportunity for the current generation of Indonesian militants.

BUSINESS TOKYO - Toyota Motor is aiming to produce more than 10 million vehicles in 2014, a bullish target that could boost other industries in Japan, a report said Saturday. The Toyota group’s production may fall temporarily after April, when Japan increases the consumption tax from five to eight percent, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper said. But the impact of the tax hike should be blunted by a lowering of the automobile acquisition tax that will also become effective from the new fiscal year starting April, the Asahi said. With Japan’s economic recovery set to remain solid, Toyota expects its production will pick up from the autumn to achieve the target, the Asahi said. “Toyota’s bullish stance could cause ripple effects to other industries,” the Asahi said. Toyota is Japan’s biggest
manufacturer. Its health could affect steelmakers and parts suppliers of all kinds, as well as the economy of the central Japan, where the company is based. In 2013, Toyota aimed to produce a record 10.12 million vehicles, after it overtook General Motors in 2012 to regain the title of world’s biggest automaker. The nominations would bring the Fed board of governors up to a full complement of seven; one seat has been empty since August when governor Elizabeth Duke left. 29 homes of residents damaged AMLAPURA - A tornado suddenly crashed Subagan, Karangasem, Friday (Jan 10) around 12:30 a.m. As a result, at least 29 houses at BTN Wahyu Permai housing complex, Subagan and eight other houses at Subagan village were broken. The Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Nyoman Sutirtayasa, on the sidelines of his bustles to lead his team to record the damaged homes said that no casualties were reported in the incident. Only one resident suffered abrasion injury as to be exposed by a fallen roof tile. Sudden brunt of the tornado made local residents fall into commotion. Kids were scared. At the time of incident, condition of the housing remained relatively quiet as most inhabitants had not come home from the office. Few times after the brunt of the tornado, the inhabitants rushed to go home. They got information from their neighbors if the housing complex was hit by tornado. Later on, the BPBD team arrived at the location. Homeowners found their roof tile destroyed and flying around. Many roof tiles were falling down,
while garage roofs made of zinc or asbestos sheet or canopies were destroyed. There was a canopy missing from the location and then found hundreds of meters away from the house owner. Of dozens of the damaged homes in the BTN Wahyu Permai housing complex, the most badly damaged homes belonged to Wayan Putu, Adi Kusmawanto, Samhadi and Wayan Dwija. Roof tile of an official Edi Setyadi flew and also fallen down by coconut. Similarly, the house of a driver who served in Amlapura Prosecutor Office, Nyoman Ardana, was fallen down by dried coconut. A number of residents such as Edi Setyadi and Putu Wayan immediately climbed up after the brunt of the tornado to replace and install their roof tiles. They quickly repaired the roof tiles, so the house was not flushed by the rain because it was cloudy and about to rain.
One of the residents whose house survived from the tornado, Ni Kadek Swandewi, said she was calling her family. Suddenly, she heard a roar of wind from the west to the east. She also saw the rubbish in the rice field flying around in the sky. Shortly after that, the wind was increasingly stronger and tackled the park and people’s houses in the west. Wayan Cita and the Commander of Karangasem Military Region Wayan Jaya Antara who lived at the local neighborhood said the tornado crashing the housing complex lasted about 10 minutes. At that time, the television antenna, satellite dish antenna and roof made of zinc, asbestos and canopy were flying around in the sky. Some residents said they were afraid of staying outside the house for fear of being afflicted by roof tile or zinc sheets. Based on the data collection by BPBD team at the BTN Wahyu Permai, a total of 21 homes were damaged ranging from mild to severe condition. NEGARA - Amerthasari Temple located about 1.5 km south of Negara town is one of the Dang Khayangan temples in Jembrana. From time immemorial to the present, the temple situating amid the customary settlement of Lokasari, or precisely Mertasari hamlet, Loloan Timur, Negara, is venerated by the subak members. It is reflected at the beginning of each planting season. To keep away their plants from diseases, residents are always saying prayers and starting their activities from the temple. It is a universal temple because it is used to venerate a great religious teacher, Danghyang Nirartha and closely associated with his pilgrimage to the Island of Bali. Building of this temple has been renovated in 1961 but in 1965 the temple building was abandoned and the renovation was totally discontinued. Ultimately, on July 14, 1976, the entire building collapsed as hit by earthquake. After that, four customary villages were responsible for the temple existence, namely the BB Agung, Puseh Agung of Banjar Tengah village, Kertha Jaya customary village of Pendem village, and Lokasari customary village of Loloan Timur village. At the beginning of the Merthasari Temple and before the renovation in 1965, there was only one temple located under a large banyan tree. Priest of the Merthasari Temple, Mangku Nendra, said that previously there was a small pond around the temple. After the renovation, the pond was moved and a meru shrine was established. Now, it has been added with a Padma shrine on the pond. Meanwhile, water of the pond is taken modernly from the ground with the depth of about 15 meters, and then flowed under the Padma shrine. As a matter of fact, it was named Amerthasari Temple. However, for consideration of easier pronunciation, it was then called Merthasari. The current temple priest, denoting the third generation, mentioned the meaning of Amerthasari was that Amertha meant the whole foods, while Sari meant the essence. Mangku Nendra is the successor of the previous temple priest, namely Nengah Netra who was also his deceased father. Meanwhile, the first was still unclear
because the temple was still not restored at that time. At the moment, the Dang Khayangan Amerthasari Temple has some shrines, namely the Ratu Nyoman, Padmasana, Meru, Pepelik, Taksu and Dewa Ayu Manik Galih dedicated to venerate the Goddess Sri. Genesis of the temple has something to do with Danghyang Nirartha. When arriving in Bali, Pedanda Sakti taught religion at Gede Perancak Temple where currently the Dang Khayangan Perancak Temple has been moved to Tanjung Tangis. At that time, he asked the monkeys where there was another village. The monkey responded by facing north and there laid a village called Budeng. There lived black monkey or Ijah. As soon as arriving at the village, he asked again where there was a village, and the monkeys were facing the west, now becoming the location of the Merthasari Temple. When arriving at the village, he taught the people about agriculture, farming and trade. The Telaga Taman was a very fertile area. Religious life was quite good. In this area, there were five sanctums. In the long run, it turned into Amerthasari village and is now called Mertasari. Now, the temple whose anniversary falls on Anggara Kasih (Tuesday) Perangbakat is venerated by four customary villages namely the Lokasari (Mertasari), Dauh Waru, Pendem and Batu Agung. Mangku added that other than the temple, there was also the Taman Temple that formerly was a pond. “In days of yore, there was a temple located beneath the banyan tree,” explained Nendra. Aside from the six shrines existing today, the temple sitting on the area of 1800 square meters also has a Peselang pavilion to place gamelan instrument, Piasan, storing chamber and the easternmost is pavilion of Banten Piodalan (oblation). In the past, most of the supporting devotees were farmers, but now they are from four customary villages and even from beyond Bali. As the existing plan, this temple area will be expanded to the current parking lot. After the land acquisition, it will become about 3,000 square meters. Renovation and expansion of the temple area will include the temple building, construction of base fence, parking lot expansion, the arrangement of temple landscaping, as well as the wantilan hall. BEIJING — A fire that raged for nearly 10 hours razed an ancient Tibetan town in southwest China that’s popular with tourists, burning down hundreds of buildings after fire engines failed to get onto the narrow streets, state media and witnesses said. There was no immediate report of any casualties, and the cause of the fire was not yet known. State media, citing local authorities, said the blaze started in a guesthouse and was ruled accidental. The fire broke out at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday in the ancient Tibetan quarter of Dukezong, which dates back more than 1,000 years and is known for its preserved cobbled streets, ancient structures and Tibetan culture. Dukezong is part of scenic Shangri-La county in Deqen prefecture. Once called Gyaitang Zong, the county renamed itself Shangri-La in 2001, hoping to draw tourists by the reference to the mythical Himalayan land described in James Hilton’s 1933 novel. Like

3-D printing set to break out of niche Associated Press Writer
LAS VEGAS — Some of the oddest items on display this week at the International CES gadget show were edible, origami-like sculptures made of sugar, their shapes so convoluted as to baffle the eye. The treats are one of many signs that we’ll all be getting a taste of 3-D printing soon —and the phenomenon won’t be relegated to the realm of engineers and tech enthusiasts. The sugar sculptures are the output of the ChefJet Pro, the first commercial, kitchen-ready food printer. It looks like an oven, and deposits sugar layer by layer in a tray, then melts the parts intended for the sculpture with water so they solidify much like sugar in a bowl will harden with moisture. Ink can be selectively added to the water so the sculptures come out in full color — a feature sure to set the minds of wedding and party planners spinning. Next to the geometric sculptures was a wedding cake supported by a delicate lattice-work tower of sugar that would be nearly impossible to make by conventional means. Oh, and the printer can print in chocolate too. 3D Systems Inc., a Rock Hill, South Carolina, company, expects to sell the full-color printer for about $100,000 in the latter half of this year, and a monochrome version for half that price. Last year, there were only a handful of 3-D printing companies at the gadget show. This year, there were thirty, and the organizers had to turn others away because they couldn’t fit them in. The 3-D printing area of the show floor drew dense crowds that gawked at the printers and their creations, which ranged from toys to tea cups to iPhone cases.
Melissa Spencer, a jewelry designer from Los Angeles, was at the show to look for a printer. 3-D printers have been used in jewelry-making for a long time, but high prices and poor resolution have limited their use. With prices down and output quality up, it’s now possible for an independent designer to buy her own printer, Spencer said. The printers focus bright ultraviolet light into liquid resin, setting it. That takes time. One printer maker cited 7 hours for a batch of five rings. The plastic pieces are then used to create molds for molten silver, gold or platinum. Spencer is now toying with the idea of abandoning the reuse of molds, and instead using the power of a 3-D printer to make every piece a one-off, unique design, customized to the buyer. It helps that she can show the plastic prototypes to the customer before casting. With 3-D printing, “we’re moving to a world of mass customization,” said Shawn Dubravac, an analyst for the Consumer Electronics Association, which puts on the show. What started with custom-printed T-shirts a la CafePress can now happen in all kinds of industries, he added. It’s still a small field, though. He expects that just under 100,000 3-D printers will be sold in 2014.

DALLAS — A permit to hunt an endangered African black rhino sold for $350,000 at a Dallas auction held to raise money for conservation efforts but criticized by wildlife advocates. Steve Wagner, a spokesman for the Dallas Safari Club, which sponsored the closed-door event Saturday night, confirmed the sale of the permit for a hunt in the African nation of Namibia. He declined to name the buyer. The Safari Club’s executive director, Ben Carter, has defended the auction, saying all money raised will go toward protecting the species. He also said the rhino that the winner will be allowed to hunt is old, male and nonbreeding — and that the animal was likely to be targeted for removal anyway because it was becoming aggressive and threatening other wildlife.
But the auction drew howls from critics, including wildlife and animal rights groups, and the FBI said it was investigating death threats against members of the club. Officials from the Humane Society and the International Fund for Animal Welfare have said that while culling can be appropriate in abundant animal populations, all black rhinos should be protected, given their endangered status. An estimated 4,000 black rhinos remain in the wild, down from 70,000 in the 1960s. Nearly 1,800 are in Namibia, according to the Safari Club. Critics have also said any hunting of a rhino sends a bad message to the public. “This auction is telling the world that an American will pay anything to kill their species,” Jeffrey Flocken, North American regional director of the Massachusetts-based IFAW, said

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — The Golden Globe Awards are put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association — a group of journalists who cover movies for international publications — so it’s fitting to pay special tribute to international filmmakers. The HFPA did that Saturday at its 11th annual Foreign Language Film Symposium, which drew the directors of four of the five foreign-language films nominated at Sunday’s Golden Globes. Abdellatif Kechiche of France (“Blue is the Warmest Color”), Thomas Vinterberg of Denmark (“The Hunt”), Paolo Sorrentino of Italy (“The Great Beauty”) and Oscar winner Asghar Farhadi of Iran (“The Past”) discussed their work with each other and an audience of fans at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, whose film “The Wind Rises” is also up for a Globe, wasn’t able to attend. Apart from Vinterberg, who also
works in English, each director was accompanied by an interpreter. It is indicated by the fact that a lot of tourism villages are unable to become self-sufficient tourism village and can draw the interest of travelers. Actually, the special interest tourism will contribute to the prosperity of society existing in the customary village. A member of the Indonesian Tourism Promotion Board (BPPI), Mangku Nyoman Kandia, said that Bali government in this regard needed to more focus on developing the tourism village. So far, there had been no tourism villages managed optimally. Most tourism villages emerged without being poised with the supporting human resources,
facilities and infrastructure. “Many customary villagers in Bali are on the poverty line. The development of tourist object is expected to help prosper the communities of customary village in the vicinity,” said Nyoman Kandia in Denpasar. Kandia judged the development of tourism village should be done by people who understood about
the tourism conditions of each region, not by the outsiders. Aside from not being close to the local community, they equally did not know about the culture and character of the local people. “At the provincial level, there has been a help for customary villages across Bali. County and municipal government also needs to provide the assistance for customary villages. It is particularly given through the management of tourist attraction in the county / municipality. It is expected to help customary villages in the vicinity,” he said. According to him, by developing tourism village, the life of the surrounding communities would
rise, including the customary village controlling the territory of the tourist attraction. The results of admission fee collection should be used for the welfare of communities in the customary village. “From the revenue of the tourist attraction management, for example, 30 percent must be allocated to help the customary villages in the vicinity. Meanwhile, the remaining 70 percent of the revenue can be returned to the county/municipality for financing the overall development, including improvement of the road infrastructure to the tourist attraction,” he explained. He said that 30 percent of the support of the tourist object manage-
ment would be able to improve the economy of customary villagers and alleviate the burden of customary villagers living on the poverty line. “I encourage the tourism components to develop tourism villages because foreign tourists are more interested in enjoying the object. Ultimately, it will have an impact on the local community because the development of tourism village will be able to directly empower the residents in improving their economy,” he said. He said the management of the accommodation by local community was very suitable for backpackers.
