Such illegal action amid the sea at night was targeting fishing boats that were netting fish. As a result, those fishermen were also led to difficult situation with the presence of pearl cultivation in the waters around Cupel.

A number of fishermen said there were at least four fishermen from Munduk Asem Hamlet whose net were seized by those pirates. Now, they could only submit to the fate after losing their livelihoods. One of the fishermen, Mujib, 50, said the action was committed at night when the fishermen were at sea. At that time, Mujib carrying 11 sets of fishing net was suddenly accosted
by a medium-sized boat conveying some six passengers. “Since I was alone, I then submitted to my fate, sir. Then, they looted 10 sets of fishing nets,” he explained last Wednesday. Mujib was only a small fisherman relying on his income from fishing grounds. Since his nets had been robbed, he was forced to buy again. The incident had also been reported to Pengambengan Marine
Police, but until now the culprit could not have been secured. Meanwhile, Mum Farida, 35, an owner of fishing net, said the pirates deliberately took the nets because they were worth up to millions of rupiahs. For some 10 sets of fishing net owned by Mujib, when purchasing a new one would worth IDR 15 million and IDR 10 million for the secondhand. Mum hoped there would be a help from
government to small fishermen like him. It was a pity for the fishermen who had struggled bitterly but did not certainly get any fish and ultimately they were also robbed at workplace. Aside from Mujib, other residents ever experiencing similar robbery by pirates were Ahmad Sodikin and Wak Yang. They lost averagely four sets of fishing nets through a similar action. By and large, the pirates deliberately did not turn on the lights and targeted small fishing boats turning on lights. “It is useless to fight against them because they come in numerous people.

JAKARTA — Sports equipment maker Nike Inc. has agreed to give workers in Indonesia $1 million in unpaid overtime, employee representatives said Thursday. A national trade union representing nearly 4,500 employees from the PT Nikomas shoe plant in Banten province said Nike had failed to pay close to 600,000
hours over a two-year period. After 11 months of negotiations, the Seattle-based company reached a $1 million settlement, said Bambang Wirahyoso, the union’s chairman. The money will be distributed to the workers by early next month. Officials at Nike could not immediately be reached for comment. Wirahyoso said he hopes the

The cause of death for a Czech citizen named Esther Samson Napa, 34, who died from hanging herself in her rented room on Jalan Nusa Indah, Gang XI/6 Denpasar, Saturday (Jan 7), is now being investigated by the ranks of East Denpasar Police. Investigations are carried out to determine the motive why the victim ended her life by hanging herself. Moreover, the death of victim seems to have been planned. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that Afghan and Taliban statements show there is support for a Taliban political office in Qatar, but said nothing has been concluded yet. “Positive statements” from Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the Taliban demonstrate “there is support for such discussions, for the (Taliban) political office to open in Qatar,” Clinton said. “Nothing has been concluded. We are still in the preliminary stages of testing whether this can be successful,” Clinton said in a press conference with Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani.
The Taliban announced last week that it planned to set up a political office in Qatar, a move seen as a precursor to peace talks with Washington. At the same time, the hardline Islamists demanded the release of prisoners from the US military detention centre at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Clinton said: “We have not made any decisions about releasing any Taliban from Guantanamo.” The chief US diplomat said Washington is prepared to back Afghan-led reconciliation talks. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BALIKPAPAN - The government plans to invest Rp9 trillion to create new rice fields in East Kalimantan to increase production as of 2012, State Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan said. “If the atmosphere is not conducive or the investment is disrupted we will leave,” he said before East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek Ishak, district heads/city mayors and deputy district heads and city mayors of the region here on Tuesday night. He said the investment would be made through PT Pupuk Sriwijaya (Pusri), PT Pertani and PT Sanghyang Seri (SHS). The three state-owned companies would create 100,000 hectares of new rice fields with PT SHS being responsible for creating 40,000 hectares of them, PT Pusri 30,000 and PT Pertani 30,000. He said as business entities their capital must be accounted for before their shareholders and so the companies should use a business approach for the project. In view of that, his office would first conduct an evaluation for a month to assure whether or not the investment could be implemented there. “If East Kalimantan is considered not feasible we still have land in other regions such as Jambi, South Sumatra and Papua,” he said. To acquire the land, Dahlan said
the president directors of the three companies had to reach out to districts in the region. Minister Dahlan Iskan was scheduled to inspect the envisaged locations for the program in Kutai Barat, Kutai Kartanegara, Kutai Timur, Berau and Bulungan by helicopter on Wednesday. He said the land would be owned by the state-owned companies to assure continuity of production. “It must not be like in the case of sugarcane production in Java where state-owned companies only own factories,” he said. Dahlan said rice production had been ignored so far. Besides the ministry of agriculture no other institutions has specially cared rice production and as a result, Indonesia still imports rice and to curb inflation has to supply almost 500,000 tons to the market. “Indeed our inflation rate last year was the best recorded at only 3.7 percent but we have also supplied the biggest ever rice supplies in the period and it was very expensive,” he said. In view of that, quoting President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s statement Dahlan said this program was very important and had to be made successful and therefore it is time now for the production of the commodity to be handled by corporations not traditionally. He said rice is the staple food of the Indonesian people and therefore its problems could affect politics.
He said “we must also be ashamed to import rice. We are an agrarian country, have vast land but how could we still have to import rice. Therefore in time of rice crisis we lose our economic and political pride meaning the government is unable to provide food for its people.” He said if the program is successful his office would increase the fields by 200,000 hectares more to make the total to reach 300,000 hectares. With regard to the development of the next rice fields the stateowned companies would be open to various schemes of cooperation, he said. He said consideration would also be taken on whether the companies should create subsidiaries with their shares able to be owned by individuals, businessmen or others to make it a commonly-owned company.” In response to Dahlan East Kalimantan governor Awang Faroek said he hoped the implementation of the program would involve the people because investors that entered the region so far tended to ignore them. Awang had said the region had prepared around 200,000 hectares of land for the food estate program. Even based on the latest developments 300,000 hectares of land had already been made available for it spreading in 10 districts including Penajam Paser Utara, Kutai Kartanegara, Kutai Barat, Kutai Timur, Berau, Bulungang and Nunukan.
“This morning, I and relatives of the two boys (who died in the custody of Sijunjung police last December 28) reported the case to Komnas HAM in Jakarta and also to the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI),” Vino Oktavia, the family`s lawyer, said over the telephone on Wednesday. The family believes that Faisal (14) and Busri Azen (17) who were brothers and residents of Jorong Ambacang, Pulasan village in Sijunjung district, had died of unnatural causes during their detention at a police station. Headquarters to investigate the case as examiners from the Padang Legal Aid Institute and local Komnas Ham office had found signs of physical abuse on the teenagers` bodies. The official autopsy report had said the two had died after hanging themselves but the LBH and Komnas HAM examiners had found bruises and marks left by a blunt object on their feet, hips and arms, Vino said. On Thursday (Jan 12), he and the two boys` relatives would visit the National Police Headquarters and the House of Representatives Commission III in Jakarta to officially report the case, Vino said.

China, India to jump forward with Hawaii telescope Associated Press Writer
HONOLULU — China and India are catapulting to the forefront of astronomy research with their decision to join as partners in a Hawaii telescope that will be the world’s largest when it’s built later this decade. China and India will pay a share of the construction cost — expected to top $1 billion — for the Thirty Meter Telescope at the summit of Mauna Kea volcano. They will also have a share of the observation time. It’s the first advanced telescope in which either nation has been a partner. “This will represent a quantum leap for the Chinese community,” Shude Mao, professor of astrophysics at National Astronomical Observatories of China, said in a telephone interview Wednesday from Waikoloa on the Big Island, where he was attending a meeting of the telescope’s scientific advisory committee. The Thirty Meter Telescope’s segmented primary mirror, which will be nearly 100 feet — or 30 meters — long, will give it nine times the light-collecting area of the largest optical telescopes in use today. Its images will also be three times sharper. G.C. Anupama, professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, said the largest telescope in India has a 2-meter mirror, though the nation is currently building one that will be 4 meters long. “So it’s a huge jump for us from the 4-meter to the 30-meter,” Anupama said in a telephone

WASHINGTON — The more astronomers look for other worlds, the more they find that it is a crowded and crazy cosmos. They think planets easily outnumber stars in our galaxy and they are even finding them in the strangest of places. And they have only begun to count. Three studies released Wednesday, in the journal Nature and at the American Astronomical Society’s conference in Austin, Texas, demonstrate an extrasolar real estate boom. One study shows that in our Milky Way, most stars have planets. And since there are a lot of stars in our galaxy — about 100 billion — that means a lot of planets. “We’re finding an exciting potpourri of things we didn’t even think could exist,” said Harvard University astronomer Lisa Kaltenegger, including planets that mirror “Star Wars” Luke Skywalker’s home planet with twin suns and a mini-star system with a dwarf sun and shrunken planets. “We’re awash in planets where 17 years ago we weren’t even sure there were planets” outside our solar system, said Kaltenegger, who wasn’t involved in the new research. Astronomers are finding other worlds using three different techniques and peering through telescopes in space and on the ground. Confirmed planets outside our solar system — called exoplanets — now number well over 700, stillto-be-confirmed ones are in the thousands. NASA’s new Kepler planet-hunting telescope in space is discovering exoplanets that are in a zone friendly to life and detecting planets as small as Earth or even tinier. That is moving the field of looking for some kind of life outside Earth from science fiction toward plain science.

LONDON - The first technical controversy of Formula One’s pre-season reared up Wednesday with Lotus suspected of having developed an innovative ride-height braking system that rivals may soon be copying. Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali said his team was awaiting clarification from the governing FIA on the legality of the device. “We are waiting for the final confirmation if this kind of devices will be acceptable or not,” he told autosport.com at a week-long event in the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio. “But for sure we are looking around these sorts of devices to see if they contribute to a performance. But we need to wait and see what will be the reaction to the FIA on that.” A report in Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper on Tuesday indicated Lotus were using a mechanism activated by the driver using a pedal to maintain ride height - the car’s distance from the ground.

to hospital in Italy on Wednesday after slipping on a patch of ice and injuring his leg, the ANSA news agency reported. The Gazzetta dello Sport website (www.gazzetta.it) said the 27-year-old had suffered a suspected micro-fracture of his right tibia in what would be a further setback to his return to competition. The highly-rated Pole is now out of contract with his former Renault team after it was announced last year that he would not be ready to return by the start of the season. His manager Daniele Morelli was not immediately available for comment. ANSA said Kubica had lost his footing on an icy street in Pietrasanta, near the coastal town of Viareggio and was taken to a local hospital for a scan of his right leg.
The agency quoted medical sources as saying the driver had then left the hospital, saying he wanted to go to the clinic in Pietra Ligure, southwest of Genoa, where he had been treated after his crash. Kubica spent two months in hospital and had multiple operations after the crash in a minor rally in Italy in which he suffered serious arm and leg injuries when a steel barrier penetrated the cockpit and nearly severed his hand. The Monaco resident also lost a huge amount of blood while trapped in the car. Before the February 6 accident, the race winner had been the leading driver at Renault (now Lotus) and was linked to Ferrari as a possible replacement for Brazilian Felipe Massa. The Malaysian-backed team, formerly Renault, were also reported to have tried out the system at a young driver test in Abu Dhabi last year. Anything which uses a driver’s movement to gain performance by altering the aerodynamic characteristics is banned, but Autosport said the system was reactive to brake torque, formed part of the suspension and therefore complied with the regulations. Lotus, who have 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen and France’s Romain Grosjean as their drivers, said they were aware of the reports but had nothing to add. The first pre-season test will start in Jerez, Spain, on February 7 when many teams will have their new cars on track for the first time.
