NEW YORK — Joan Rivers’ left her daughter, Melissa, in charge of her fortune and left money for some of her favorite charities, including Guide Dogs for the Blind, Jewish Guild Healthcare and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. DENPASAR - A young Russian woman may face the death penalty for allegedly attempting to smuggle crystal methamphetamine into the resort island of Bali, an Indonesian customs official said Thursday. Aleksandra Magnaeva, 26, was detained Sunday after arriving in Bali on a flight from Hong Kong with 2.1 kilograms (4.6 pounds) of the drug stashed in her two bags. “The maximum penalty is death,” said Budi Harjanto, the Bali airport customs chief. He did not give an estimated street value for the drugs. Magnaeva said during questioning that her boyfriend, with whom she had been living in China, had told her to pass the drugs on to someone on Bali, the official said. The Russian said she had brought
the drugs via land from mainland China to Hong Kong, and that it was her first time smuggling drugs into Bali, Harjanto said. However she told officials that she had trafficked drugs throughout Asia, including to Thailand, numerous times, he added. Customs officials detected similarities in her case and that of a New Zealand man caught attempting to smuggle crystal methamphetamine into Bali last week, but said authorities were yet to conclude whether the two were linked.
Indonesia enforces some of the stiffest penalties for drug trafficking in the world, including life imprisonment and death. Foreigners are frequently arrested for attempting to smuggle narcotics into hard-partying Bali, and some have been handed the death sentence. New Indonesian President Joko Widodo said this week that there will be no pardons for drug traffickers on death row, dashing hopes he might take a softer stance on capital punishment.

Such policy made a number of banks choose to remain in operation, so that Hindu employees could not perform the celebration of victory. According to them, the Decree of the Governor of Bank Indonesia No.16/13 /KEP.GBI/INTERN/2014 stipulated that on the Galungan Feast on Wednesday (Dec 17) the banking employees in Bali Province practicing Hinduism were given optional holiday to carry out Galungan worship. But in the letter, the Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra ascertained if the operations of public service continued to run well. Related to this issue, BI left it completely to the bankers whether the operational activities of bank would refer to the decree. BI expected the bankers to inform it as early as possible via letter if the bank operation would impose a holiday on the feast of the Sacred Galungan. “Of course, the banks headquartered in Jakarta will choose to open because there (Jakarta—Ed) the Galungan celebration is unlike in Bali. Nyoman Suci and other bank employees also hoped that BI could review the decision, so that the Hindus who worked in banking sector could celebrate Galungan. “If the decision is handed over to central office, it will certainly apply the operation as usual. Then, we are mostly the Hindus must follow the policy of central office, so that we cannot celebrate,” she said. She also said that her professional colleagues who worked in banks also complained about the policy. Similar public complaints were also submitted to the editor of Bali Post. “My colleagues working in other private banks also complained about the same matter, except for the BPD where I’ve got information if the employees got holiday,” he said. Galliano, 54, widely regarded as one of the most brilliant fashion minds of his generation, was sacked by Dior in March 2011 over a drunken antiSemitic tirade in a Paris bar. “John Galliano’s first ‘Artisanal’ haute couture collection for Maison Margiela will be exceptionally presented in London on January 12, around tea time,” the house told AFP without elaborating. “The choice of this location for John’s first show is both personal -- going back to his formative years and his beginnings in the industry -- and it is intrinsically related to the city’s traditional tailoring history and heritage,” it added. The flamboyant designer has kept a low profile since his sacking and subsequent conviction by a French
court for anti-Semitism following his outburst in which he hurled abuse at customers in a bar in Paris’s historic Jewish quarter. The rant, captured in a mobile phone recording, cause outrage but the designer was spared jail after the court accepted that he was sorry for his actions, which he blamed on drink and drugs. Galliano, who spent nearly 15 years at Dior, was seen as the driving force behind Dior’s 700 million euro ($880 million) annual profits at the height of his time there. Announcing his appointment in October as Maison Margiela creative director, Renzo Rosso, whose OTB group controls Margiela, described him as “one of the greatest undisputed talents of all time”.

He later told a magazine he had been sickened to see the video evidence against him, insisting he was baffled by the drunken rant. “It’s the worst thing I have said in my life, but I didn’t mean it... Heels have also been a controversial symbol in the battleground of sexual politics. Now a scientific study in France has measured their power. Scientists from the Universite de Bretagne-Sud conducted experiments that showed that men behave very differently toward high-heeled women. The results, published online in the journal “Archives of Sexual Behaviour,” may please the purveyors of Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo shoes — yet frustrate those who think stilettos encourage sexism. The study found if a woman drops a glove on the street while wearing heels, she’s almost 50 percent more likely to have a man fetch it for her than if she’s wearing flats. by a man, compared to when her heel is nearer to the ground. “Women’s shoe heel size exerts a powerful effect on men’s behavior,” says the study’s author, Nicolas Gueguen, a behavioral science researcher. “Simply put, they make women more beautiful.” Raised shoes have an unglamorous beginning: worn first by Egyptian butchers, who donned platforms to avoid treading in bloody offal. But on women as “signifiers of femininity,” raised shoes initially appeared in Ancient Greece and Rome, according to Elizabeth Semmelhack of The Bata Shoe Museum. In Rome, where the sex trade was legal, high heels helped clients identify prostitutes in crowds. Although high heels were worn for centuries in the Ottoman Empire and in Persia for horseback riding, they only minced into the West in the 1500s, when they were associated with imperial power and popularized as erotic in the 19th and 20th centuries. Such was the allure that a person with status or wealth became referred to as “well-heeled.” This study shows this allure is very much alive. “Though it’s a relatively small cross-section, this study is very significant since the results are clear and
consistent,” said Paris-based sociologist Jean-Claude Kaufmann, who was not involved in the study. “In a relation of seduction, men are very attracted by a woman in heels as she looks taller, more sexually confident, sure of herself, with a lengthened silhouette and sensual jutting buttocks.” Gueguen’s study had 19-year-old female volunteers wearing black shoes with heels that were 0.5cm (0.2 inches) or 5cm (2 inches) or 9cm (3 1/2 inches) high. Then they asked men between the ages of 25-50 for help in various circumstances. One situation involved a woman asking passers-by: “Excuse me, sir. We are currently conducting a survey on gender equality. Would you agree to answer our questionnaire?” Flat heels got a 46.7% answer rate, medium heels a 63% rate and the highest heels a whopping 83% success rate from the men. Nowadays, the most fashionable heels on the runways and in nightclubs are higher still — with spiked heels commonly measuring 10 cm (4 inches) and extreme heels, dangerously, above 13 cm (5 inches). Medically, high heels can cause back pain and increase the risk of ankle injuries. Prolonged heel wearing can even permanently shorten calf tendons.

Nevertheless, the craft depicting root naturalization in the form of furniture is still loved by travelers from all over the world. “At first I pursued this profession, I embellished with typical carving of Batuan learned since my childhood, such as the atmosphere of farming or other Balinese motif. However, travelers were reluctant to pay more. They even prefer the root furniture with a natural shape,” said Nyoman Legiawan, the owner of root furniture, Wednesday (Des 10). The man from Dentis hamlet, Batuan village, recounted that he originally wanted to give a new touch to the typical carving style of Batuan village by using teak root media brought in from Java. “Approximately 10 years
ago, I saw this craft in Java. At that time, I imagined to use the motif of Balinese carving on teak root media,” he said. However, after made with a fairly complicated process, in fact, travelers paid the same price as the teak root furniture without carving. “At that time, I have already convinced the travelers, but they were more interested in the natural design of the roots,” he said. Legiawan who followed the consumer demand finally managed to penetrate international market, especially Europe. Now, the export of his root furniture such as desks, chairs and disc table has continuously spread to Asia, Europe and Australia. “In Europe and Australia, more buyers like natural shape without finishing because it was commonly used for outdoor need in cold temperatures. However, the Asian market still needs a finishing touch to make it more beautiful,” he explained. Yet to the Shan, Karen, Karenni and other ethnic minorities living in the river’s basin, the six proposed hydro-power dams symbolize violence, anxiety about the future and a tool used by authorities to secure a greater grip over their lives. Some minority leaders say tensions over the dams could even re-ignite civil war in Myanmar, or Burma. Fighting has erupted in recent months as government troops have moved into areas around proposed dam sites, including the $2.6 billion Hut Gyi dam in Karen State in eastern Myanmar, and clashed with ethnic minority fighters in violation of cease-fires. The military also has forcibly removed thousands of residents close to dam sites, according to refugees and aid groups. “It is clear that Hut Gyi dam and similar projects are obstructing the peace process in Burma,” said Gen. Baw Kyaw Hei, second in command of the Karen National Liberation Army, which has been fighting the government for greater autonomy since the 1940s. He
spoke while sitting in a meeting hall overlooking the river at the Ei Tu Hta camp, home to 4,000 refugees from earlier fighting that could be submerged if the dam is built. Preliminary work on this and other dams has already begun. Economic and environmental issues also are at stake in harnessing the power of the Salween, which seeps out of a Tibetan glacier and winds 2,800 kilometers (1,750 miles) through China’s rugged Yunnan province, Myanmar’s jungles and along the Thai border before flowing into the Indian Ocean. The dam projects — all joint ventures with Chinese and Thai companies — include no provisions for wealth-sharing of resources between the ethnic groups and a regime dominated by the Burman majority and the powerful military despite the advent of a civilian government in 2011. Nor are there provisions for many residents whose land, villages and livelihoods might be wiped out by flooding from the
dams. Contracts have been awarded to foreign and local investors, many of them closely tied to government or military leaders. Authorities say the dams will expand access to electricity, which the World Bank says reaches only 29 percent of households in the country. But the bulk of power generated will be sold to Thailand and China. “Local people will get nothing in return for the destruction of the river,” said David Tharckabaw, former vice president of the Karen insurgency and one of its veteran leaders. “For development to work there must be good government, transparency, rule of law, reliable administration and institutions, and no corruption. If they come in now, it will just enrich the generals and their cronies.” Ethnic minority leaders say the government is wrong to forge ahead with such mega-projects before reaching an equitable political resolution to the longstanding conflict.

The findings from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau suggest that many Americans are being trapped by debt because they are confused by the notices they get from hospitals and insurance companies
about the cost of treatment. As a result, millions of Americans may be surprised to find they are stuck with lower credit scores, making it harder for them to borrow to buy a home or an automobile. The report by the federal regulator indicates that much of this trouble could be avoided. About half of consumers who only carry medical debt have no other signs of being under financial distress.
Government to resolve clean water crisis in 2015 Bali Post
SINGARAJA - Difficulty to get clean water annually experienced by residents of Pacung hamlet, Tejakula subdistrict, begins to get a serious attention from local government along with Bali government and central government. As targeted, it can start to be resolved from 2015. At the moment, the village authority already started to prepare a reservoir. So far, a total of four units of reservoir have been built where each has the capacity of 250 cubic meter of clean water. Headman of Pacung, Tejakula subdistrict, I Made Yasa, when met at Alassari hamlet hall on Wednesday afternoon (Dec 10) said that to resolve the water crisis at the village, the government had allocated a budget worth IDR 4.8 billion. In details, the state budget allocated was IDR 3.1 billion, Bali government (IDR 1.1 billion) and Buleleng County (IDR 600 million). This amount excluded the independent funding issued by local residents. “We are very grateful because the central, provincial and county government has given their attention to our difficulty to get water every year. We have confidence that with all the funds the water issue can be resolved next year,” he said. According to Yasa, the drought at Pacung village had already become a classical problem every year. Most local residents took water from seaside springs at Pacung village. On entering dry season, they were difficult to get clean water in the water tank because it could only last for three months. The cisterns at Pacung village were used to supply the water needs for 700 households (families). “From the previous dry seasons, the most severe water crisis was undergone by 363 families or approximately 1,043 people. The residents categorized into poor households come to 233 families,” he said. After ascertained the help of the government, added Yasa, starting this year (2014) his party had built a reservoir to hold water with the capacity of 100 cubic meters. The water sourced from Subak Mesahan, Melulung village, Kintamani, Bangli. From the main reservoir would be built a pipeline to channel water
to three reservoirs, respectively with a capacity of 50 cubic meters. The water from the three reservoirs was then distributed through pipelines located closer to people’s homes and installed tap at the edge of highway. “We have started doing the work since 2010. After installing the pipelines from this reservoir, hopefully it could overcome the clean water crisis for 700 families at two villages,” he said. After resolving the clean water crisis at Pacung village, the agricultural sector at local village would be more motivated. One of the potentials worth developing was chili cultivation. With the support of adequate clean water supply, the chili plants in the arid areas would still be able to run and did not rely on rainy season only. Transplantation of chili seedlings could be done throughout the season, while in dry season farmers could still cultivate their garden with the help of watering of clean water having been built by the government. As the support of local government, farmers were promised to be given superior chili seedlings and fertilizers to boost chili production at Pacung village. According to Jero Mangku Pande, the story related to the founding of Gunung Sari Classical Legong troupe originated from mebarong-barongan or barong dance activities. The barong troupe made a street show at local villages. Not only that, his party had also established a troupe of male arja operetta with the support from sympathizers. After that, in 1926 the barong troupe supported by 25 artists then established the Gong Kebyar Gunung Sari gamelan troupe of Peliatan at Kajanan Palace of Peliatan. HONG KONG — Lines of Hong Kong police tore down tents Thursday as they closed in on the heart of a pro-democracy protest camp spread across a highway, in a final push to retake streets occupied by activists for two and a half months. Workers acting on a court order earlier cleared barricades from the edges of the site. The students and other activists have been protesting Beijing’s restrictions on the first election for Hong Kong’s leader, though the movement’s momentum has been fading in recent weeks. Many of the hundreds of protesters still remaining Thursday departed as officers worked their way down the sixlane road, kicking trash to the side and pushing over red, beige and blue tents. There was no immediate sign of anyone inside the tents or any resistance from pro-democracy demonstrators. “I think the spirit of the movement still lives, but the idea of occupying streets is over,” said student Andrew Chan, 20. “We can’t even get a big crowd to come out today to fight the police clearing the site.” A group of student leaders and prodemocratic lawmakers sat on the street, ready to peacefully resist police, who repeatedly warned that anyone refusing
to leave would be arrested. One of the student leaders, Alex Chow, rallied the crowds as the police approached, saying their fight was not over and they would find other ways to press forward in the days to come. The protesters reject Beijing’s restrictions on the first election for the city’s top leader, scheduled for 2017, but have failed to win any concessions from Hong Kong’s government. The sprawling encampment in Hong Kong’s Admiralty section, on the edge of the financial district, has been the focal point for the protesters, who have occupied the site for 75 days. As the clear-out neared, protesters chanted “I want universal suffrage” and tossed pieces of paper that read “We will be back.” In addition to hundreds of journalists at the scene, a group of about 30 academics was monitoring the police operation, as were the Independent Police Complaints Council and human rights groups. On Sept. 28 police fired dozens of
tear gas rounds at thousands of protesters gathering in the area angry over the prolonged detention of student leaders. The move infuriated protesters and the wider public and kick-started the student-led protest movement, which came to include two other protest sites in Hong Kong. Police say 655 people have been arrested over the past 2 ½ months, and that 129 officers were injured. They have given no overall injury toll. A separate court order led to the clearing of the Mong Kok protest site in late November. That operation and ensuing nighttime clashes in the gritty neighborhood’s surrounding streets resulted in about 160 arrests. On the eve of Thursday’s action to clear the Admiralty area, thousands of protesters and supporters streamed into the site for one last night of what’s come to be known as the “Umbrella Movement,” named for the protesters’ preferred method of deflecting police pepper spray.
WASHINGTON — Top spies past and present campaigned Wednesday to discredit the Senate’s investigation into the CIA’s harrowing torture practices after 9/11, battling to define the historical record and deter potential legal action around the world. The Senate intelligence committee’s report doesn’t urge prosecution for wrongdoing, and the Justice Department has no interest in reopening a criminal probe. But the threat to former interrogators and their superiors was underlined as a U.N. special investigator demanded those responsible for “systematic crimes” be brought to justice, and human rights groups pushed for the arrest of key CIA and Bush administration figures if they travel overseas. Current and former CIA officials pushed back, determined to paint the Senate report as a political stunt by Senate Democrats tarnishing a program that saved American lives. It is a “one-sided study marred by errors of fact and interpretation — essentially a poorly done and partisan attack on the agency that has done the most to protect America,” former CIA directors George Tenet, Porter Goss and Michael Hayden wrote in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece. Hayden was singled out by Senate investigators for what they said was a string of misleading or outright false statements he gave in 2007 about the importance of the CIA’s brutal treatment of detainees in thwarting terrorist attacks. He described the focus on him as “ironic on so many levels” as any wrongdoing predated his arrival at the CIA. “They were far too interested in yelling at me,” Hayden said in an email to The Associated Press. The intelligence committee’s 500-page release concluded that the CIA inflicted suffering on al-Qaida prisoners beyond its legal authority and that none of the agency’s “enhanced interrogations” provided critical, life-saving intelligence. It cited the CIA’s own records, documenting in detail how waterboarding and lesser-known techniques such as “rectal feeding” were actually employed. The CIA is now in the uncomfortable position of defending itself publicly, given its basic mission to protect the country secretly. Its 136-page rebuttal suggests Senate Democrats searched through millions of documents to pull out only the evidence backing up pre-determined conclusions. “That’s like doing a crossword puzzle on Tuesday with Wednesday’s answer’s key,” the CIA said in an emailed statement. Fachir stated while inaugurating the operations of the four schools on Monday (Dec. 8) in Mawrawaddy village, Rakhine County. The four schools were built in Thaykan, Sanbalay, Mawrawaddy, and Buthidaung villages in Rakhine County. The inauguration ceremony was held in Mawrawaddy village and was attended by Indonesian Ambassador to Myanmar Ito Sumardi, Myanmars Minister of Border Affairs Lieutenant General Thet Naing Win, and Chief Minister of Rakhine County U. Maung Maung Ohn, and several representatives from the UN bodies operating in Myanmar. During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister of Rakhine County U. The index of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) fell 26.12 points or 0.51 percent to 5,139.28 points with index of 45 most liquid stocks down 0.74 percent to 883.48. Head of Research of Valbury Asia Securities Alfiansyah said the JCI fall was on negative regional sentiment with a number of major Asian market suffering a correction in the morning trade on Thursday. “The domestic sentiment is positive but not enough to offset the impact of the shrinking global market indices,” Alfiasyah said. The governments statement to maintain a 5.8 percent growth target for the economy in 2015 showed the governments optimism that serves positively to the domestic market. The government is set to rely on development of infrastructure to boost manufacturing industry and attract investment to meet the target, he added. Meanwhile, the market players are awaiting the result of the meeting of the central bank leaders mainly on its benchmark interest rate. The prediction that the inflation in December would exceeded 2 percent and weakening rupiah against the US dollar might keep the JCI in a negative territory. Regional markets such as Hang Seng , Nikkei and Straits Times recorded a decline in indices.

LOS ANGELES — Magic Johnson wants the Los Angeles Lakers to lose every game this season for their own good. Coach Byron Scott thinks they’re better off learning how to win, and that’s just what they did several hours after Magic’s latest pointed comments. Johnson discussed the struggling Lakers on Tuesday at a promotional appearance in New York, and the Hall of Famer dished out some blunt thoughts on the 16-time NBA champion franchise’s future. “I hope the Lakers lose every game,” the former Lakers point guard said. “Because if you’re going to lose, lose. And I’m serious. If you’re going to lose, you’ve got to lose, because you can’t be in the middle of the pack. You either have to be great, or you’ve got to be bad to get a good pick.” A few hours later, Scott responded to his former Lakers backcourt mate by stressing the importance of establishing a winning climate surrounding Kobe Bryant. Scott says tanking wouldn’t be entertained by the Lakers, whose 6-16 record is tied for the second-worst in the Western Conference. “That’s easy to say, but when you’re behind the scenes and you’re in the trenches and you’re coaching, that’s not something that you want to do,” Scott said. “We’ve got to go out here and win every game possible. I think that sends a message to those guys in there that it’s going back to that losing mentality. LOS ANGELES — Magic Johnson wants the Los Angeles Lakers to lose every game this season for their own good. Coach Byron Scott thinks they’re better off learning how to win, and that’s just what they did several hours after Magic’s latest pointed comments. Johnson discussed the struggling Lakers on Tuesday at a promotional appearance in New York, and the Hall of Famer dished out some blunt thoughts on the 16-time NBA champion franchise’s future. “I hope the Lakers lose every game,” the former Lakers point guard said. “Because if you’re going to lose, lose. And I’m serious. If you’re going to lose, you’ve got to lose, because you can’t be in the middle of the pack. You either have to be great, or you’ve got to be bad to get a good pick.” A few hours later, Scott responded to his former Lakers backcourt mate by stressing the importance of establishing a winning climate surrounding Kobe Bryant. Scott says tanking wouldn’t be entertained by the Lakers, whose 6-16 record is tied for the second-worst in the Western Conference. “That’s easy to say, but when you’re behind the scenes and you’re in the trenches and you’re coaching, that’s not something that you want to do,” Scott said. “We’ve got to go out here and win every game possible. I mean, if you lose games, that’s one thing. But to go out and try to lose, that’s a different story. I think that sends a message to those guys in there that it’s going back to that losing mentality. HONG KONG — Lines of Hong Kong police tore down tents Thursday as they closed in on the heart of a pro-democracy protest camp spread across a highway, in a final push to retake streets occupied by activists for two and a half months. Workers acting on a court order earlier cleared barricades from the edges of the site. The students and other activists have been protesting Beijing’s restrictions on the first election for Hong Kong’s leader, though the movement’s momentum has been fading in recent weeks. Many of the hundreds of protesters still remaining Thursday departed as officers worked their way down the sixlane road, kicking trash to the side and pushing over red, beige and blue tents. There was no immediate sign of anyone inside the tents or any resistance from pro-democracy demonstrators. “I think the spirit of the movement still lives, but the idea of occupying streets is over,” said student Andrew Chan, 20. “We can’t even get a big crowd to come out today to fight the police clearing the site.” A group of student leaders and prodemocratic lawmakers sat on the street, ready to peacefully resist police, who repeatedly warned that anyone refusing
to leave would be arrested. One of the student leaders, Alex Chow, rallied the crowds as the police approached, saying their fight was not over and they would find other ways to press forward in the days to come. The protesters reject Beijing’s restrictions on the first election for the city’s top leader, scheduled for 2017, but have failed to win any concessions from Hong Kong’s government. The sprawling encampment in Hong Kong’s Admiralty section, on the edge of the financial district, has been the focal point for the protesters, who have occupied the site for 75 days. As the clear-out neared, protesters chanted “I want universal suffrage” and tossed pieces of paper that read “We will be back.” In addition to hundreds of journalists at the scene, a group of about 30 academics was monitoring the police operation, as were the Independent Police Complaints Council and human rights groups. On Sept. 28 police fired dozens of
tear gas rounds at thousands of protesters gathering in the area angry over the prolonged detention of student leaders. The move infuriated protesters and the wider public and kick-started the student-led protest movement, which came to include two other protest sites in Hong Kong. Police say 655 people have been arrested over the past 2 ½ months, and that 129 officers were injured. They have given no overall injury toll. A separate court order led to the clearing of the Mong Kok protest site in late November. That operation and ensuing nighttime clashes in the gritty neighborhood’s surrounding streets resulted in about 160 arrests. On the eve of Thursday’s action to clear the Admiralty area, thousands of protesters and supporters streamed into the site for one last night of what’s come to be known as the “Umbrella Movement,” named for the protesters’ preferred method of deflecting police pepper spray.
WASHINGTON — Top spies past and present campaigned Wednesday to discredit the Senate’s investigation into the CIA’s harrowing torture practices after 9/11, battling to define the historical record and deter potential legal action around the world. The Senate intelligence committee’s report doesn’t urge prosecution for wrongdoing, and the Justice Department has no interest in reopening a criminal probe. But the threat to former interrogators and their superiors was underlined as a U.N. special investigator demanded those responsible for “systematic crimes” be brought to justice, and human rights groups pushed for the arrest of key CIA and Bush administration figures if they travel overseas. Current and former CIA officials pushed back, determined to paint the Senate report as a political stunt by Senate Democrats tarnishing a program that saved American lives. It is a “one-sided study marred by errors of fact and interpretation — essentially a poorly done and partisan attack on the agency that has done the most to protect America,” former CIA directors George Tenet, Porter Goss and Michael Hayden wrote in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece. Hayden was singled out by Senate investigators for what they said was a string of misleading or outright false statements he gave in 2007 about the importance of the CIA’s brutal treatment of detainees in thwarting terrorist attacks. He described the focus on him as “ironic on so many levels” as any wrongdoing predated his arrival at the CIA. “They were far too interested in yelling at me,” Hayden said in an email to The Associated Press. The intelligence committee’s 500-page release concluded that the CIA inflicted suffering on al-Qaida prisoners beyond its legal authority and that none of the agency’s “enhanced interrogations” provided critical, life-saving intelligence. It cited the CIA’s own records, documenting in detail how waterboarding and lesser-known techniques such as “rectal feeding” were actually employed. The CIA is now in the uncomfortable position of defending itself publicly, given its basic mission to protect the country secretly. The index of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) fell 26.12 points or 0.51 percent to 5,139.28 points with index of 45 most liquid stocks down 0.74 percent to 883.48. Head of Research of Valbury Asia Securities Alfiansyah said the JCI fall was on negative regional sentiment with a number of major Asian market suffering a correction in the morning trade on Thursday. “The domestic sentiment is positive but not enough to offset the impact of the shrinking global market indices,” Alfiasyah said. The governments statement to maintain a 5.8 percent growth target for the economy in 2015 showed the governments optimism that serves positively to the domestic market. The government is set to rely on development of infrastructure to boost manufacturing industry and attract investment to meet the target, he added. Meanwhile, the market players are awaiting the result of the meeting of the central bank leaders mainly on its benchmark interest rate. The prediction that the inflation in December would exceeded 2 percent and weakening rupiah against the US dollar might keep the JCI in a negative territory. Regional markets such as Hang Seng , Nikkei and Straits Times recorded a decline in indices.

WASHINGTON — A new government report shows that nearly 20 percent of U.S. consumers — nearly 43 million people — have unpaid medical debts. The findings from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau suggest that many Americans are being trapped by debt because they are confused by the notices they get from hospitals and insurance companies
about the cost of treatment. As a result, millions of Americans may be surprised to find they are stuck with lower credit scores, making it harder for them to borrow to buy a home or an automobile. The report by the federal regulator indicates that much of this trouble could be avoided. About half of consumers who only carry medical debt have no other signs of being under financial distress.

SINGARAJA - Difficulty to get clean water annually experienced by residents of Pacung hamlet, Tejakula subdistrict, begins to get a serious attention from local government along with Bali government and central government. As targeted, it can start to be resolved from 2015. At the moment, the village authority already started to prepare a reservoir. So far, a total of four units of reservoir have been built where each has the capacity of 250 cubic meter of clean water. Headman of Pacung, Tejakula subdistrict, I Made Yasa, when met at Alassari hamlet hall on Wednesday afternoon (Dec 10) said that to resolve the water crisis at the village, the government had allocated a budget worth IDR 4.8 billion. In details, the state budget allocated was IDR 3.1 billion, Bali government (IDR 1.1 billion) and Buleleng County (IDR 600 million). This amount excluded the independent funding issued by local residents. “We are very grateful because the central, provincial and county government has given their attention to our difficulty to get water every year. We have confidence that with all the funds the water issue can be resolved next year,” he said. According to Yasa, the drought at Pacung village had already become a classical problem every year. Most local residents took water from seaside springs at Pacung village. On entering dry season, they were difficult to get clean water in the water tank because it could only last for three months. The cisterns at Pacung village were used to supply the water needs for 700 households (families). “From the previous dry seasons, the most severe water crisis was undergone by 363 families or approximately 1,043 people. The residents categorized into poor households come to 233 families,” he said. After ascertained the help of the government, added Yasa, starting this year (2014) his party had built a reservoir to hold water with the capacity of 100 cubic meters. The water sourced from Subak Mesahan, Melulung village, Kintamani, Bangli. From the main reservoir would be built a pipeline to channel water
to three reservoirs, respectively with a capacity of 50 cubic meters. The water from the three reservoirs was then distributed through pipelines located closer to people’s homes and installed tap at the edge of highway. “We have started doing the work since 2010. After installing the pipelines from this reservoir, hopefully it could overcome the clean water crisis for 700 families at two villages,” he said. After resolving the clean water crisis at Pacung village, the agricultural sector at local village would be more motivated. One of the potentials worth developing was chili cultivation. With the support of adequate clean water supply, the chili plants in the arid areas would still be able to run and did not rely on rainy season only. Transplantation of chili seedlings could be done throughout the season, while in dry season farmers could still cultivate their garden with the help of watering of clean water having been built by the government. As the support of local government, farmers were promised to be given superior chili seedlings and fertilizers to boost chili production at Pacung village. Jero Mangku Alit Pande Made Nesa, the secretary of the art troupe, said that performance of all the dances remained to preserve the original style of Peliatan village. did not dare to reduce, cut or add the parts of the dance. What just show the authenticity inherited from the past,” he said. Specialty of the Legong Peliatan, explained Jero Mangku Pande, seemed a means to introduce more about the Peliatan village, Ubud. The Legong was trained by Gusti Niang Sengog and then continued by her pupil, Gusti Ayu Raka. “She has taught tirelessly the peculiarities of Legong Peliatan,” said the Ubud-born man in 1955. According to Jero Mangku Pande, the story related to the founding of Gunung Sari Classical Legong troupe originated from mebarong-barongan or barong dance activities. The barong troupe made a street show at local villages. Not only that, his party had also established a troupe of male arja operetta with the support from sympathizers. In the long run, the classical art continued to grow, so
that it was almost never empty of getting show requests. After that, in 1926 the barong troupe supported by 25 artists then established the Gong Kebyar Gunung Sari gamelan troupe of Peliatan at Kajanan Palace of Peliatan. Serving as the initiator was AA Mandera, Gusti Kompyang Pangkung, Made Bees, Pande Made Gerondong, Pande Made Ganut and friends. To be able to exercise regularly, the troupe still borrowed gamelan instrument at the palace. Due to their seriousness, in 1930 the gamelan troupe was often believed to participate in a competition involving some counties. Since it could won the first place, then in 1931 it was appointed an ambassador to Europe by presenting Legong, Janger and Cak Dance. It was said the voyage took for six months by vessel. Furthermore, the troupe purchased its own gamelan set where

each member should set aside their money from their show fee. “A farmer who was cutting grass at the Gunung Sari Temple discovered a cymbal. This gamelan instrument was then used as jejaton (capital) to create a gamelan in Pande Asem, Tiyingan village, Klungkung,” told a former employee of the Gianyar Education Agency. After that, popularity of the Gong Kebyar Gunung Sari gamelan troupe was heard to various countries. So, it was entrusted to be the ambassador of the art to London (1932); France (1952); and won the first place at the British Embassy (1953) so that it had the honor to raise red-and-white flag at the UN Building. In 1962, it made a performance in Situbondo, East Java; performance in four cities of Australia (1971); autobiographical performance in BBC London (1968); Mexico (1981); Los Angeles (1996); and returned to Europe (1998).

When carrying the goods, they communicated via mobile phone,” he said. On arrival in Bali, the suspect had communicated to Js. Js stated that she would ask her secretary with the

Yet to the Shan, Karen, Karenni and other ethnic minorities living in the river’s basin, the six proposed hydro-power dams symbolize violence, anxiety about the future and a tool used by authorities to secure a greater grip over their lives. Some minority leaders say tensions over the dams could even re-ignite civil war in Myanmar, or Burma. Fighting has erupted in recent months as government troops have moved into areas around proposed dam sites, including the $2.6 billion Hut Gyi dam in Karen State in eastern Myanmar, and clashed with ethnic minority fighters in violation of cease-fires. The military also has forcibly removed thousands of residents close to dam sites, according to refugees and aid groups. “It is clear that Hut Gyi dam and similar projects are obstructing the peace process in Burma,” said Gen. Baw Kyaw Hei, second in command of the Karen National Liberation Army, which has been fighting the government for greater autonomy since the 1940s. He
spoke while sitting in a meeting hall overlooking the river at the Ei Tu Hta camp, home to 4,000 refugees from earlier fighting that could be submerged if the dam is built. Preliminary work on this and other dams has already begun. Economic and environmental issues also are at stake in harnessing the power of the Salween, which seeps out of a Tibetan glacier and winds 2,800 kilometers (1,750 miles) through China’s rugged Yunnan province, Myanmar’s jungles and along the Thai border before flowing into the Indian Ocean. The dam projects — all joint ventures with Chinese and Thai companies — include no provisions for wealth-sharing of resources between the ethnic groups and a regime dominated by the Burman majority and the powerful military despite the advent of a civilian government in 2011. Nor are there provisions for many residents whose land, villages and livelihoods might be wiped out by flooding from the
dams. Contracts have been awarded to foreign and local investors, many of them closely tied to government or military leaders. Authorities say the dams will expand access to electricity, which the World Bank says reaches only 29 percent of households in the country. But the bulk of power generated will be sold to Thailand and China. “Local people will get nothing in return for the destruction of the river,” said David Tharckabaw, former vice president of the Karen insurgency and one of its veteran leaders. “For development to work there must be good government, transparency, rule of law, reliable administration and institutions, and no corruption. If they come in now, it will just enrich the generals and their cronies.” Ethnic minority leaders say the government is wrong to forge ahead with such mega-projects before reaching an equitable political resolution to the longstanding conflict.

PARIS - John Galliano, the British designer whose return to fashion was to be the highlight of the Paris couture shows in January, will debut his first collection for the French fashion house Maison Margiela in London instead of Paris, a spokesperson said Wednesday. Galliano, 54, widely regarded as one of the most brilliant fashion minds of his generation, was sacked by Dior in March 2011 over a drunken antiSemitic tirade in a Paris bar. “John Galliano’s first ‘Artisanal’ haute couture collection for Maison Margiela will be exceptionally presented in London on January 12, around tea time,” the house told AFP without elaborating. “The choice of this location for John’s first show is both personal -- going back to his formative years and his beginnings in the industry -- and it is intrinsically related to the city’s traditional tailoring history and heritage,” it added. The flamboyant designer has kept a low profile since his sacking and subsequent conviction by a French
court for anti-Semitism following his outburst in which he hurled abuse at customers in a bar in Paris’s historic Jewish quarter. The rant, captured in a mobile phone recording, cause outrage but the designer was spared jail after the court accepted that he was sorry for his actions, which he blamed on drink and drugs. Galliano, who spent nearly 15 years at Dior, was seen as the driving force behind Dior’s 700 million euro ($880 million) annual profits at the height of his time there. Announcing his appointment in October as Maison Margiela creative director, Renzo Rosso, whose OTB group controls Margiela, described him as “one of the greatest undisputed talents of all time”.
Galliano underwent treatment for drug and alcohol abuse at an Arizona rehabilitation centre following the scandal. He later told a magazine he had been sickened to see the video evidence against him, insisting he was baffled by the drunken rant. “It’s the worst thing I have said in my life, but I didn’t mean it... I have been trying to find out why that anger was directed at this race (the Jewish people),” he told Vanity Fair magazine. “I now realise I was so... angry and so discontent with myself that I just said the most spiteful thing I could.” Maison Margiela said Galliano’s collection would also be presented by appointment during the Paris couture shows from January 25 to 31.

PARIS — The well-heeled Marilyn Monroe reportedly once said if you give a girl the right shoes, she can conquer the world. The allure of high-heeled shoes is no secret among women, who have used them to entice men from the streets of Ancient Rome to the New York City sidewalks of Carrie Bradshaw. Heels have also been a controversial symbol in the battleground of sexual politics. Now a scientific study in France has measured their power. Scientists from the Universite de Bretagne-Sud conducted experiments that showed that men behave very differently toward high-heeled women. The results, published online in the journal “Archives of Sexual Behaviour,” may please the purveyors of Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo shoes — yet frustrate those who think stilettos encourage sexism. The study found if a woman drops a glove on the street while wearing heels, she’s almost 50 percent more likely to have a man fetch it for her than if she’s wearing flats. Another finding: A woman wearing heels is twice as likely to persuade men to stop and answer survey questions on the street. And a high-heeled woman in a bar waits half the time to get picked up
by a man, compared to when her heel is nearer to the ground. “Women’s shoe heel size exerts a powerful effect on men’s behavior,” says the study’s author, Nicolas Gueguen, a behavioral science researcher. “Simply put, they make women more beautiful.” Raised shoes have an unglamorous beginning: worn first by Egyptian butchers, who donned platforms to avoid treading in bloody offal. But on women as “signifiers of femininity,” raised shoes initially appeared in Ancient Greece and Rome, according to Elizabeth Semmelhack of The Bata Shoe Museum. In Rome, where the sex trade was legal, high heels helped clients identify prostitutes in crowds. Although high heels were worn for centuries in the Ottoman Empire and in Persia for horseback riding, they only minced into the West in the 1500s, when they were associated with imperial power and popularized as erotic in the 19th and 20th centuries. Such was the allure that a person with status or wealth became referred to as “well-heeled.” This study shows this allure is very much alive. “Though it’s a relatively small cross-section, this study is very significant since the results are clear and
consistent,” said Paris-based sociologist Jean-Claude Kaufmann, who was not involved in the study. “In a relation of seduction, men are very attracted by a woman in heels as she looks taller, more sexually confident, sure of herself, with a lengthened silhouette and sensual jutting buttocks.” Gueguen’s study had 19-year-old female volunteers wearing black shoes with heels that were 0.5cm (0.2 inches) or 5cm (2 inches) or 9cm (3 1/2 inches) high. Then they asked men between the ages of 25-50 for help in various circumstances. One situation involved a woman asking passers-by: “Excuse me, sir. We are currently conducting a survey on gender equality. Would you agree to answer our questionnaire?” Flat heels got a 46.7% answer rate, medium heels a 63% rate and the highest heels a whopping 83% success rate from the men. Nowadays, the most fashionable heels on the runways and in nightclubs are higher still — with spiked heels commonly measuring 10 cm (4 inches) and extreme heels, dangerously, above 13 cm (5 inches). Medically, high heels can cause back pain and increase the risk of ankle injuries. Prolonged heel wearing can even permanently shorten calf tendons.

Yet another case happens to teak root crafts which are less desirable when collaborated with distinctive touches of Batuan village. Nevertheless, the craft depicting root naturalization in the form of furniture is still loved by travelers from all over the world. “At first I pursued this profession, I embellished with typical carving of Batuan learned since my childhood, such as the atmosphere of farming or other Balinese motif. However, travelers were reluctant to pay more. They even prefer the root furniture with a natural shape,” said Nyoman Legiawan, the owner of root furniture, Wednesday (Des 10). The man from Dentis hamlet, Batuan village, recounted that he originally wanted to give a new touch to the typical carving style of Batuan village by using teak root media brought in from Java. “Approximately 10 years
ago, I saw this craft in Java. At that time, I imagined to use the motif of Balinese carving on teak root media,” he said. However, after made with a fairly complicated process, in fact, travelers paid the same price as the teak root furniture without carving. “At that time, I have already convinced the travelers, but they were more interested in the natural design of the roots,” he said. Legiawan who followed the consumer demand finally managed to penetrate international market, especially Europe. Now, the export of his root furniture such as desks, chairs and disc table has continuously spread to Asia, Europe and Australia. “In Europe and Australia, more buyers like natural shape without finishing because it was commonly used for outdoor need in cold temperatures. However, the Asian market still needs a finishing touch to make it more beautiful,” he explained. Special secret in shaping the root furniture, added Legiawan, was the ability to make innovation and find design in the groove of teak root without damaging the original indentation. “Indeed this requires special skills
because not everyone can innovate and capture the interesting shapes of the random teak root,” he said. Nevertheless, he admitted to often create the artworks by using teak root materials with the motif of Balinese carving. It was carried out to channel his architectural art as a legacy
from his parents. This craft was also often sold such as Balinese carved doors made from teak root. “Aside from furniture, I still like to carve as previously taught by my father because basically we are an undagi (traditional architecture) family,” he said. (nik)

DENPASAR - A young Russian woman may face the death penalty for allegedly attempting to smuggle crystal methamphetamine into the resort island of Bali, an Indonesian customs official said Thursday. Aleksandra Magnaeva, 26, was detained Sunday after arriving in Bali on a flight from Hong Kong with 2.1 kilograms (4.6 pounds) of the drug stashed in her two bags. “The maximum penalty is death,” said Budi Harjanto, the Bali airport customs chief. He did not give an estimated street value for the drugs. Magnaeva said during questioning that her boyfriend, with whom she had been living in China, had told her to pass the drugs on to someone on Bali, the official said. The Russian said she had brought
the drugs via land from mainland China to Hong Kong, and that it was her first time smuggling drugs into Bali, Harjanto said. However she told officials that she had trafficked drugs throughout Asia, including to Thailand, numerous times, he added. Customs officials detected similarities in her case and that of a New Zealand man caught attempting to smuggle crystal methamphetamine into Bali last week, but said authorities were yet to conclude whether the two were linked.
Indonesia enforces some of the stiffest penalties for drug trafficking in the world, including life imprisonment and death. Foreigners are frequently arrested for attempting to smuggle narcotics into hard-partying Bali, and some have been handed the death sentence. New Indonesian President Joko Widodo said this week that there will be no pardons for drug traffickers on death row, dashing hopes he might take a softer stance on capital punishment.
DENPASAR - The policy of Bank Indonesia (BI) to impose optional holiday (extra leave) in the celebration of Galungan reaped a protest from many bank employees. Such policy made a number of banks choose to remain in operation, so that Hindu employees could not perform the celebration of victory. According to them, the Decree of the Governor of Bank Indonesia No.16/13 /KEP.GBI/INTERN/2014 stipulated that on the Galungan Feast on Wednesday (Dec 17) the banking employees in Bali Province practicing Hinduism were given optional holiday to carry out Galungan worship. But in the letter, the Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra ascertained if the operations of public service continued to run well. Related to this issue, BI left it completely to the bankers whether the operational activities of bank would refer to the decree. BI expected the bankers to inform it as early as possible via letter if the bank operation would impose a holiday on the feast of the Sacred Galungan. “Of course, the banks headquartered in Jakarta will choose to open because there (Jakarta—Ed) the Galungan celebration is unlike in Bali. Thus, we celebrating the Galungan Feast are automatically forced to join the headquarters’ decision,” complained Bagus Sena, one of the private bank employees in Denpasar, Wednesday (Dec 10). According to him, the policy of BI that did not impose a joint holiday on the celebration of Galungan was the first time applied. “Previously, BI always imposed a joint holiday, so that we the Hindus can focus on celebrating Galungan,” he said. He hoped the decree on optional holiday signed off by Representative Office of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusa Tenggara, Benny Siswanto, could be revised, and enforced joint holiday. “Hopefully, this policy could be discussed with relevant parties so that the Hindus could perform worship solemnly,” he said. Nyoman Suci and other bank employees also hoped that BI could review the decision, so that the Hindus who worked in banking sector could celebrate Galungan. “If the decision is handed over to central office, it will certainly apply the operation as usual. Then, we are mostly the Hindus must follow the policy of central office, so that we cannot celebrate,” she said. She also said that her professional colleagues who worked in banks also complained about the policy. Similar public complaints were also submitted to the editor of Bali Post. “My colleagues working in other private banks also complained about the same matter, except for the BPD where I’ve got information if the employees got holiday,” he said. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Joan Rivers’ left her daughter, Melissa, in charge of her fortune and left money for some of her favorite charities, including Guide Dogs for the Blind, Jewish Guild Healthcare and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
