OSLO, Norway — Three women who fought injustice, dictatorship and sexual violence in Liberia and Yemen accepted the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize on Saturday, calling on repressed women worldwide to rise up against male supremacy. “My sisters, my daughters, my friends — find your voice,” Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said after collecting her Nobel diploma and medal at a ceremony in Oslo. Sirleaf, Africa’s first democratically elected female president, shared the award with women’s rights campaigner Leymah Gbowee, also from Liberia, and Tawakkul Karman, a female icon of the protest movement in Yemen. The peace prize was announced in October, along with the Nobel awards for medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and economics. Worth 10 million kronor ($1.5 million) each, the Nobel Prizes are always handed out on the anniversary of award founder Alfred Nobel’s death on Dec. 10, 1896. By selecting Karman, the prize committee recognized the Arab Spring movement that has toppled autocratic leaders in North Africa and the Middle East. DURBAN, South Africa — A U.N. climate conference reached a hard-fought agreement Sunday on a far-reaching program meant to set a new course for the global fight against climate change. The 194-party conference agreed to start negotiations on a new accord that would ensure that countries will be legally bound to carry out any pledges they make. It would take effect by 2020 at the latest. The deal doesn’t explicitly compel any nation to take on emissions targets, although most emerging economies have volunteered to curb the growth of their emissions. Currently, only industrial countries have legally binding emissions targets under the 1997 Kyoto Pro-
tocol. Those commitments expire next year, but they will be extended for at least another five years under the accord adopted Sunday — a key demand by developing countries seeking to preserve the only existing treaty regulating carbon emissions. The proposed Durban Platform offered answers to problems that have bedeviled global warming negotiations for years about sharing the responsibility for controlling carbon emissions and helping the world’s poorest and most climatevulnerable nations cope with changing forces of nature. The United States was a reluctant supporter, concerned about agreeing to join an international climate system that likely would find much opposition in the U.S. Congress.
“This is a very significant package. None of us likes everything in it. Believe me, there is plenty the United States is not thrilled about,” said U.S. climate envoy Todd Stern. But the package captured important advances that would be undone if it is rejected, he told the delegates. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto said here Saturday Nunun Nurbaeti, a suspect in a high-profile bribery case, has been arrested in Bangkok and brought back to Jakarta. Suyanto said the news was received by the foreign minister from the Indonesian ambassador to Thailand. Nunun was taken from Bangkok to Jakarta by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), according to information from the foreign minister. Nurbaeti was taken straight to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) office on Saturday night shortly after arriving from Thailand where she was arrested. Nunun arrived at the KPK office guarded by tens of security officers while tens of policeman and journalists had already come to the location before her. She is to be taken to the Pon-

Indonesia threatens to cut BlackBerry data service Agence France-Presse
JAKARTA - Indonesia has threatened to cut data services used by millions of BlackBerry customers, the industry body said Saturday, in an ongoing spat over infrastructure and government access to information. The industry regulator said it would block internet services to the smartphones in the biggest market for Research In Motion (RIM) -- which makes the BlackBerry -- outside North America if RIM did not comply with its demands. Canada-based RIM had agreed in January to fulfil four requests made by the communications and information technology ministry. “RIM is supposed to have a licence to provide internet services, and the government will only grant them one when they have fulfilled all four requests. “If they don’t, we’ll have to cut their data services,” the commissioner of the Indonesian Telecommunication Regulatory Body, Heru Sutadi, told AFP. The requests included setting up an aggregator that would effectively reduce costs for local service providers, but authorities claimed Saturday RIM had rolled back on that commitment. “We had a meeting with RIM on Thursday to talk about progress since January. They have fulfilled some requests, but we are disappointed they have not agreed to establish an aggregator in Indonesia,” Sutadi said. The government also requested that RIM set up customer care centres, block pornography from its service, and assist the government in accessing encrypted data on users’ phones. RIM said, however, that it has addressed all the requests and that it is looking at new multimillion-dollar investments in Indonesia. It has set up a router in Singapore to which some Indonesian carriers have connected, and said that this fulfilled the government’s aggregator request as it had only asked for a centre in the region. The firm said it was receiving “mixed messages”. “We have never been formally asked to build a centre in Indonesia,” RIM’s East Asia managing director Gregory Wade told AFP. Sutadi said the industry body was concerned by the state of play on government access to encrypted data. “RIM told us they were working with law enforcement agencies to ensure they can access the information, but they could not tell us who exactly they were working with,” Sutadi said. Indonesia is RIM’s biggest market outside North America, with shipments of BlackBerry smartphones expected to surpass nine million units by the year end. Directions Shred beef, shred coconut. Slice garlic and brown it. Heat shrimp paste a little bit. Mix lime juice garlic, chili pepper, brown sugar, corriander, kencur, galanga, shrimp paste in a blender. Mix evenly the beef and coconut with the spice mix. Add salt, pepper, and orange juice. Form thumb-sized pieces from this mix, and stick each on a skewer. Barbecue until done.

Menjangan Island IBP
Menjangan island, part of the West Bali National Park has to most beautiful coral reefs in Bali. Along with the nearby Labuan Lalang, this is a great place for diving and snorkeling. As a part of Bali Barat National Park, Menjangan Island is well known for its magniďŹ cent underwater world, beautiful coral reefs found nearby and the best site for ďŹ shing. Another attraction of the island is protected deer. Menjangan, an inhibited island about 10 km offshore, offers deep coral reef walls and is one of Bali’s best diving sites. There are a few dive sites to choose from at Menjangan with good conditions and excellent visibility. It’s also an interesting site for snorkeling. Menjangan also has a wreck , known as the ‘Anker’ because of its heavily encrusted anchor at the top of the reef. Fixed moorings have been built to prevent damag, and the island is reached by a 30 minutes boat ride from Labuan Lalang. Pemuteran is an ideal place to plan excursions to West Bali National Park, compromising the nature reserve of Menjangan Island and the uplands in the west. Gaga performed a slightly naughty rendition of the holiday classic Friday night as part of her mini-concert at the radio station’s event at Madison Square Garden. Gaga — sporting tight studded leather pants, matching top and a bare midriff — gyrated on a set that included antlers, Christmas trees and holiday lights as she performed “White Christmas.” “So I recently added a couple of lyrics to this song because I think it’s too short. Only some of the exterior scenes were shot in Bosnia. But the Thursday night screening of the film in Sarajevo to representatives of victims’ associations elicited positive reactions from some of Jolie’s toughest local critics. “She has made a fantastic film for Bosnia and Herzegovina, I can really say that from the angle of a victim,” Murat Tahirovic, the president of Bosnia’s association of (wartime) detainees, told the Federal Television in Sarajevo. SAN FRANCISCO — Moon watchers in the western U.S., Hawaii and elsewhere across the globe were treated Saturday to a rare celestial phenomenon: a total lunar eclipse. For 51 minutes starting at 6:06 a.m. PST, the Earth’s shadow completely blocked the moon. The moon took on a reddish glow, as some indirect sunlight continued to reach it after passing through the Earth’s atmosphere. Since the atmosphere scatters blue light, only red light strikes the moon, giving it a crimson hue. David Sayre, who runs a public relations firm in Hawaii, said it had been cloudy and rainy around his house on Oahu, but the weather cleared just in time for the eclipse. He awoke, as he usually does, around 3 a.m. and remembered to
step outside the house in time to catch the eclipse about a half hour later. No one else in the neighborhood was up. “Sure enough it was turning that orangy-red color,” Sayre, 47, said. “I said, ‘Gosh I better grab a camera.’” He added, “To be able to see it just right outside our house was really cool.” At the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, some 300 people, many clutching coffee cups in the frigid morning air, sat with blankets and chairs on the observa-
tory’s great lawn. “It’s a celestial festival out here,” Capm Petersen, 39, told the Los Angeles Times as he set up his camera. Perched on a slope north of downtown near the Hollywood sign, the property offers clear views of the sky. Observatory officials alerted the crowd when the eclipse began and spontaneous applause erupted when the celestial event ended. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon goes through the long shadow cast by the Earth and is blocked from the sunlight that illuminates it. The last total lunar eclipse was on June 15 although that was not visible from the U.S. The next one is on April 15, 2014, and will be seen in the U.S.

JOHANNESBURG - Almost 80,000 years before humans began using chemical sprays to control insect pests, Africans were using mattresses made from bug-repelling plants to ensure a good night’s sleep. The finding, published in the journal Science on Friday, derives from 77,000-year-old plant bedding found in a cave in South Africa’s KwaZulu Natal province. The find is 50,000 years older than any previous prehistoric beds discovered. The bed’s insect-repelling capabilities suggest ancient humans
were well aware of the chemical and medicinal properties of some plants. “The leaves contained chemicals that repelled mosquitoes and other insects, so we know that they understood medicinal plants,” said Lyn Wadley, an archaeology professor at the University of the Witwatersrand. The bedding would have helped reduce insect-borne disease, although early humans would not have made any connection between mosquitoes and malaria, she told Reuters. “It was for comfort. They would have known that those leaves kept
away insects and maybe other pests as well,” Wadley said. The bedding consists of thick layers of compacted stems and leaves of sedges and rushes collected from the banks of a nearby river. In the last few years, scientists have made a series of startling discoveries in South Africa shedding light on the lives of early humans. In October, researchers at the Blombos Cave 300 km (200 miles) east of Cape Town discovered a 100,000 year-old painting kit consisting of abalone shells, colour pigments and bone spatulas used to work up a paste.

Red Bull Racing enjoys Formula 1 championship celebration in Milton Keynes Red Bull estimated that a crowd of 60,000 spectators turned out for its Home Run championship celebration in its Milton Keynes hometown today. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber took to the streets in their Formula 1 cars, joined by David Coulthard in a NASCAR Red Bull Toyota and Red Bull stunt rider Chris Pfeiffer. “It’s great to be here in Milton Keynes which is where the cars are built and everyone from the factory
works,” said Vettel. “It’s nice to say thank you and to see all the fans from the area. It was good fun;
we did some donuts and enjoyed ourselves out there. “Thanks to all the fans that came today, we wanted to put on a great show, so I hope they enjoyed it. It’s a great way to finish the season.” Team boss Christian Horner also paid tribute to the supporters for turning out in such numbers. “To run an F1 car through the
middle of Milton Keynes was fantastic, so many of our workforce are local and it’s great to see so many fans here,” he said. “It’s flattering to have so many people turn out to celebrate what we have achieved. Renault plays down Kimi Raikkonen’s snow mobile incident RENAULT says Kimi Raikkonen did not suffer any serious harm when he crashed in a snow mobile race in Austria today. The Formula 1 returnee was reported to have fallen on an early run in the event and suffered pain from his left wrist, ruling him out of the rest of the weekend. But the Renault team has issued a message via its Twitter feed underlining that Raikkonen was largely unscathed. “We just spoke to Kimi,” it read. “There’s nothing to worry about, he only has a sore wrist. He might have it checked again on Monday, but that’s all.” Renault announced last week that it had enticed Raikkonen back to F1 for 2012 after a two-year stint in the World Rally Championship, and has since promoted Romain Grosjean from the third driver role to become his team-mate. The team will run as Lotus from next season.
