CUPERTINO - Apple on Tuesday unveiled two new iPhones, fielding a slick new top-end model along with one aimed at budget-conscious smartphone shoppers around the world.

“The business has become so large that this year we are going to replace the iPhone 5 and we are going to replace it with two new designs,” Apple chief Tim Cook announced at the company’s Silicon Valley headquarters. Apple will begin taking orders on Friday, and on September 20 the two devices will go on sale in the United States, Australia, Britain, China, France, Germany, Japan and Singapore.

The iPhone 5C is part of Apple’s bid to counter the flood of low-cost smartphones from rivals, most of which use the Google Android operating system. Apple designer Jony Ive said that despite the lower cost, the polycarbonate iPhone 5C with a steel frame “is beautiful.” The iPhone 5C with 16 gigabytes of memory will start at $99 with a two-year US carrier contract and $549 without a contract -- $100 less

than previous iPhone base models. “The 5C is a no-compromise device,” Gartner analyst Van Baker told AFP after trying out Apple’s new phones. “It is just in a plastic case instead of a metal case, and they basically reduce the price by the cost of materials.” But Baker said it was an “open question” whether the price cut for the iPhone 5C would be enough to attract customers in emerging markets. “Anyone expecting Apple to come truly down-market with the iPhone 5C was fooling themselves,” said Ovum analyst Tony Cripps. “The day that happens is the day the company signals that it has run out of headroom for expansion.”

Apple would not name its China telecom launch partners, who might step in with subsidies to help push down iPhone prices there. Apple planned a separate press event in China on Wednesday. The top-line iPhone 5S, which starts at $199 with a contract for US buyers and $649 without one, “is the most forward thinking phone we have ever created,” said Apple vice president Phil Schiller. “It is the gold standard in smartphones.” Schiller said the 5S model includes a speedier chip which puts computing performance on par with desktop machines. “It has over a billion transistors

in it,” he said, adding that the device will be a mobile game lover’s delight with blazing smooth, rich graphics. The 5S will also have some 10 hours of talk time, or 40 hours of music listening, Schiller added. Apple introduced a fingerprint sensor for the iPhone 5S as a new security measure in place of passwords. “You can just press the home button to unlock your phone,” Schiller said. “You can use it to authenticate iTunes purchases.” Schiller added: “We have so much of our personal data on these devices, and they are with us almost everyplace we go, so we have to protect them.”

Approximately 60 percent of clove trees in Buleleng County is estimated to be attacked by white root fungus or Rigidopurus lignosus that has begun proliferating since the past few months. Without immediate handling, the clove trees becoming the leading commodity of Buleleng are feared to run out without a trace. lately. Three months later, it should be fertilized with organic fertilizers or manure mixed with Trichoderma or a kind of killer fungus to white root fungus. “These steps should be done

immediately,” he said. Meanwhile, Nerda said that his party had made preventive efforts against the white root fungus since last January with a variety of programs funded by the state and local budget. In the main budget 2013, his party got a fund of IDR 325 million and filed a proposal of additional fund in the amended budget of some IDR 191 million. The fund was used for programs such as the Integrated Pest Management Field School (SLPHT) having been conducted at Pegadungan, Pedawa, Mengening and Tinggarsari village. Besides, it was also accompanied by pest control program with the procurement of pesticides to cope with the white root fungus to 150 hectares of clove plantations at Unggahan village, Seririt subdistrict. Soaring price of soybean in Indonesia indeed makes some tofu and tempeh-based businesses in some regions begin to get restless. However, different condition happened to the circles of farmers. They even vied to cultivate soybeans in order to get the impact of the soaring price of soybean in the market. As happened in Klungkung County, a number of farmers looked busy cleaning hundreds of square meters of their cultivated land. A farmer of Subak Taman Sari, Kusamba, Dawan, Tuesday (Sep 10), admitted he intentionally did the cleanup against the weeds in the area of their soybean so that it could quickly grow and gave maximal results. Such bustles virtually happened in most plots of the land belonged to farmers at Subak Sukahati with hundreds of members. Since the price of soybean skyrocketed, people had started planting soybeans. On average, the soybean plant had been 20 days old. “Soybean can be harvested at the age of 95 days, and

it only gives once harvest. Hopefully, we can enjoy the high price after the harvest,” he said. Kereng said that under normal conditions, every 3,000 square meters of soybean crop could produce 400 kg of soybean in once harvest. Thus, one hectare of land could produce more than one ton of soybean. However, amidst their efforts to boost the production of soybeans, the plants even begin to be attacked by pest like beetles and weevils. The attack caused the soybean leaves and shoots damaged. Ultimately the soybean plants slowly died. The effort to replant was complicated by the rare supplies of soybean seed because only the Anjasmoro variety that was appropriate to be planted in Klungkung. Similar experience was revealed by another farmer, Nyoman Luab. The resident from Prisatria I hamlet told if such condition almost happened to every stem. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Study: 1 in 4 men in parts of Asia have raped Associated Press Writer

LONDON — About one in four men in some parts of Asia admitted raping a woman, according to the first large studies of rape and sexual violence. About one in 10 admitted raping a woman who was not their partner. International researchers said their startling finding should change perceptions about how common violence against women is and prompt major campaigns to prevent it. Still, the results were based on a survey of only six Asian countries and the authors said it was uncertain what rates were like elsewhere in the region and beyond. They said engrained sexist attitudes contributed, but that other factors like poverty or being emotionally and physically abused as children were major risk factors for men’s violent behavior. A previous report from the World Health Organization found one-third of women worldwide say they have been victims of domestic or sexual violence. “It’s clear violence against women is far more widespread in the general population than we thought,” said Rachel Jewkes of South Africa’s Medical Research Council, who led the two studies. The research was paid for by several United Nations

agencies and Australia, Britain, Norway and Sweden. The papers were published online Tuesday in the journal, Lancet Global Health. In the new research, male interviewers surveyed more than 10,000 men in Bangladesh, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea. The word “rape” was not used in the questions, but the men were asked if they had ever forced a woman to have sex when she wasn’t willing or if they had ever forced sex on someone who was too drunk or drugged to consent. In most places, scientists concluded between 6 to 8 percent of men raped a woman who wasn’t their partner. When they included wives and girlfriends, the figures were mostly between 30 to 57 percent. The lowest rates were in Bangladesh and Indonesia and the highest were in Papa New Guinea. Previous studies of rape have been done in South Africa, where nearly 40 percent of men are believed to have raped a woman.

NEGARA - Bali cattle population in Jembrana County within the past two years has dropped dramatically. Data of the agricultural census obtained in 2013 indicated if the population has dropped up to tens of thousands. Allegedly, it happened because many cattle were sold when the price fell and breeders had low interest in raising cattle. though it had been skyrocketing at the moment. Some of them could not afford to buy because the price was high. In addition, the provincial government had allowed the shipping of calf on the demand from outside Bali. “Previously, the selling was only allowed for broodstock, but now restricted calf is also allowed with certain qualifications determined by the province,” he added. Allegedly, most of the cattle sold or shipped to outside Bali were slaughtered. It was believed to have caused the decrease in the cattle population in Jembrana within the past two years. Today, the price of cattle in the market is good enough making the cattle raisers smile. It is much better from the condition two years ago. However, the problem to be faced by smallholder farmers in particular is the difficulty to look for fodder when entering the dry season. (kmb26)

DENVER — A federal team has arrived in Colorado to help investigate hospital reports that synthetic marijuana is to blame for scores of recent illnesses and possibly three fatalities in the state. “The deaths are suspect, they’re being investigated,” Mark Salley, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said Tuesday. Dr. Tracy Murphy, Wyoming state epidemiologist, said Tuesday that the cases came to light last year after an unusual number of patients went to hospitals with kidney failure, back pain, abdominal pain and vomiting. Murphy said substances sold as synthetic marijuana are unpredictable in terms of ingredients and physical reactions. “There’s probably lots of illnesses and harmful effects that we probably just don’t know about yet,” he said. “The best thing is that people just need to not put that stuff in their bodies.”

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines - Muslim rebels holding scores of hostages in the southern Philippines are demanding international mediation, an official said Wednesday, as fresh rounds of fire broke out between government troops and the guerrillas on the third day of the standoff. The rebels, enraged by a broken peace deal with the government, are holding the civilian hostages as human shields near the port city of Zamboanga. Troops have surrounded the Moro National Liberation Front guerrillas and their hostages in four coastal villages. At least nine people have been killed since the standoff began Monday. On Tuesday, the rebels fired two mortar rounds near the main port, prompting authorities to order vessels to dock elsewhere. Two Koreas agree to re-open Kaesong industrial zone Agence France-Presse

SEOUL - North and South Korea agreed Wednesday to reopen the jointly-run Kaesong industrial park on a trial basis from next Monday, five months after it was shut during soaring military tensions. The reopening date was settled after a marathon, 20-hour negotiating session, and marks a tangible step forward for recent efforts to improve cross-border relations. “The institutional foundation has now been laid for Kaesong to develop into an internationally competitive and stable industrial complex,” the South’s Unification Ministry said in a statement. The two sides agreed that operations at the South-funded complex that lies 10 kilometres (six miles) over the border in North Korea would “resume on a trial basis from September 16,” it said. Born out of the “sunshine” reconciliation policy initiated in the late 1990s by then-South Korean president Kim Dae-Jung, Kaesong was established in 2004 as a rare symbol of inter-Korean cooperation. It provided an important hard currency source for the impoverished North through taxes, other revenues, and its cut of workers’ wages. It had appeared immune to previous downward spirals in North-South relations, but finally fell victim to two months of intense military tensions that followed the North’s nuclear test in February. Pyongyang initially barred South Korean entry to the park in early April and shortly afterwards withdrew its entire 53,000-strong workforce -- effectively closing down the complex, which houses production lines for 123 South Korean firms. Each side blamed the other, with the North insisting its hand was forced by hostile South Korean actions -- in particular, a series of joint military exercises with the United States. As military tensions eased, the two Koreas agreed last month to work together to resume operations at the zone. As part of the deal, the North accepted the South’s demand that Kaesong be opened to foreign investors -- a move seen by Seoul

as a guarantee against the North shutting the complex down again in the future. Wednesday’s agreement, which followed talks that began Tuesday morning and continued through the night, includes plans to host a road show for foreign investors at Kaesong in October. Seoul had pushed for compensation for the companies hit by the closure, and the two sides appeared to reach a compromise -- agreeing to waive taxes for the firms this year. Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency confirmed an agreement had been reached but offered no details beyond the September 16 re-opening date. Analysts stressed that Kaesong would remain a vulnerable project whatever safeguards are reached. “This agreement offers no real guarantee that Kaesong will be insulated from political upheavals and military tensions in the future,” said Yang Moon-Jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. “Even the 1953 armistice is easily violated -- that’s the reality on the Korean peninsula,” Yang said. South Korea’s chief delegate at the Kaesong talks, Kim Ki-Woong, said the two sides had also agreed to set up an arbitration panel to handle any industrial disputes at the complex. And further talks will be held on the South’s request for improving the communications infrastructure in Kaesong, including Internet access, Kim said. Once Kaesong is reopened, observers say Pyongyang is likely to step up pressure on Seoul to revive another cross-border project -South Korean tours to the North’s Mount Kumgang resort. The South suspended the tours -- another important source of hard currency for the North -after a North Korean soldier in 2008 shot dead a female tourist from the South who strayed into a restricted zone.

CULTIVATING the agricultural sector is indeed full of challenges ranging from the threat of pests, weather, lacking of the touch of technology to uncertain market prices. Such conditions are exacerbated by the unclear direction of the agricultural policy reform. According to I.B. Raka Wiryanatha as an agricultural actor and Advisory Board to the Indonesia Farmers Union (HKTI) of Bali, the conditions of the agriculture and farmers in Bali today were very much marginalized. Even, the government seemed to have not paid serious attention to farming. “Commitment to raise the agriculture from the past to date is only limited to discourse and campaign promises. The fate of farmers was at stake and sometimes just a political commodity. In other words, farmers will be given attention during the campaign period only and after that they will be abandoned,” he said in a discussion with the theme “Analyzing the Results of the Agricultural Census 2013,’ in Denpasar, not long ago. Though many programs had been echoed by provincial government, he said, they had not fully meet the farmers’ need. “So far, many government assistances provided for farmers are wasteful. For instance, when farmers need seeds and fertilizers, they were even provided with the assistance of machine that cannot be used directly and eventually turns rusty. What farmers needed is sustainable support, so that it can be rolled out to other farmers, not just a momentary relief or sweeteners,” he said. Similar opinion was disclosed by Dr. I Ketut Arnawa, a lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture of Mahasaraswati University, Denpasar. He also asked the government to give more attention to change the mindset on the agriculture. All this time, young people were reluctant to engage in the agricultural sector because it was considered less promising. On the contrary, they were more interested in the other fields beyond the agriculture. Actually their role was very important because the agricultural sector required their thinking. Such lacking of interest in the sector was evidenced by the decrease in the number of students attending the Faculty of Agriculture at a number of universities in Bali. Meanwhile, the lecturer at the Department of Agro Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Warmadewa University, Yohanes P Situmeang, said the agricultural product should show a quality improvement. Similarly, the matter of marketing of the agricultural products should be given more serious attention. The market was then getting more competitive so that only those with good quality could win the market competition. Yohanes said that so far the life of farmers still had no future assurance. Erratic commodity prices made people reluctant to get involved in the farming profession. “If the government can guarantee the price of each agricultural commodity, we can surely reduce the imports of goods to exploit and develop the agriculture so that the product has a high selling price. According to him, the realization of foreign investment in the period was IDR 1.9 trillion and domestic investment reached USD11.14 million. The investors investing in Bali came from Denmark, Singapore, Australia, Spain, Belgium, PRC, Germany, Japan, the United States, Taiwan, India, England, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, South Korea and France. “There are also investors from the combined countries investing in Bali. A total of 25 projects are generated with an investment value of USD 2.3 million during the first quarter,” he explained. Related to the growth of investment in Bali in 2014, it was targeted to reach IDR 11.16 trillion with the total number of projects made by foreign investment and domestic in-

vestment reached 4,180 investors. MOSCOW - A Soyuz capsule carrying three astronauts touched down to Earth early on Wednesday morning after undocking from the International Space Station following 166 days in space. American Chris Cassidy and Russians Pavel Vinogradov and Alexander Misurkin emerged from the capsule in smiles on an unusually sunny day in Kazakhstan. Live coverage from NASA, the U.S. space agency, first showed the shuttle parachuting to a safe and punctual landing. Helicopters were then flown to the landing site, where medical and flight crews helped the three men disembark. The capsule undocked from the space station for a flight to Earth that took just over three hours. The three men blasted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome on March 29. Each of the men was carried to reclining chairs, where they spent several minutes in order to acclimatize to Earth’s gravity. A NASA TV commentator said that crew members Misurkin and Cassidy would be taken to a medical center, where they will undergo various tests that could provide information for future flights. Vinogradov, at 60 the oldest human ever to land in a Soyuz vehicle, would not take part in the same experiments.

Coca-Cola and other soda makers criticized Mexico’s plans to impose a tax on sugary drinks while consumer watchdogs warned it was urgently needed to combat soaring obesity and diabetes. President Enrique Pena Nieto wants Mexicans to pay an extra peso (almost 8 US cents) for every liter of sweetened drink in a country that guzzles more soft drinks than any other and competes with the United States for the dubious title of world’s fattest nation. Pena Nieto says the tax would contribute to help Mexicans reduce their consumption and fight obesity, which is also affecting many children. If Congress approves the tax, Mexico would join France in introducing a special levy on sodas. But Coca-Cola de Mexico argued in a statement that “a tax on beverages is ineffective to combat a problem as complex as obesity.” “To change behaviors effectively, we need to ensure people understand that all calories count, regardless of the source -- and that includes our caloric beverages too,” the company said. Coca-Cola said studies show that soft drinks account for between 5.5 percent and 6.6 percent of calories in the average Mexican diet, “so it is difficult to understand why beverages are viewed by some as the primary cause of weight gain.” Pena Nieto’s plan, part of a wider fiscal reform he announced Sunday to improve tax collection, cites statistics showing that Mexico leads the world in soda consumption with 163 liters (43 gallons) per capita per year compared to 118 liters in the United States. But the National Association of Soda and Carbonated Water Makers argued that the special tax would “not resolve the obesity problem” and would harm sugar cane producers as well as the poorest consumers in a country where 45 percent of its 118 million people live in poverty. The tax would, at best, reduce the calorie intake of Mexicans by just 1.1 percent on average, said the association, which represents bottlers of Coca-Cola, Pepsi and other brands. It was the fourth fatal shooting of a policeman in or around the city in recent weeks and the most high-profile yet, as it was in central Jakarta and right by the headquarters of a powerful law enforcement agency. Police said the shooting late Tuesday followed the pattern of previous attacks, and they suspected the same terror group was behind the killings. In the latest attack, the policeman was on a motorcycle escorting six trucks carrying elevator parts on a busy main road when four gunmen riding motorbikes opened fire on him, police said.

The officer, identified as Sukardi, was passing the offices of the Corruption Eradication Commission when the attack happened at 10:15 pm (1515 GMT). “The policeman died instantly after being shot three times in his chest and stomach,” said Jakarta police spokesman Rikwanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. Police launched a massive manhunt after the killing, setting up road blocks and questioning motorists. The attack came after three policemen were shot dead in two separate attacks in Tangerang district on Jakarta’s

western outskirts in August. While Indonesian security forces have been targeted by terror groups in recent years, the upsurge of attacks in the capital is a new development. The World Bank has also issued a policy statement titled “Connecting to Work: How Information and Communication Technologies Could Help Expand Employment Opportunities,” which identifies three global drivers for increasing ICT-related jobs. Dust kicked up when he took the car down the straightaway. Tires screeched around the turns. Cones went flying. “I lost track of how many I hit,” McIlroy said with a laugh when he got out of the car. It wasn’t much different from how his golf has gone this year. McIlroy left the racing behind and drove at a more reasonable speed to Conway Farms Golf Club to get ready for the BMW Championship, the third FedEx Cup playoff event and perhaps the last tournament. That’s surprising for a guy who started the year at No. 1 in the world. He is No. 41 in the FedEx Cup standings. McIlroy figures he needs to finish among the top seven against a 70-man field to be among the 30 players who advance to the Tour Championship with a shot at the $10 million prize. That doesn’t sound so hard, except it would be his best finish in five months. McIlroy doesn’t have the market cornered in disappointment.

However, despite causing the Italian defence to panic on a number of occasions, the Czechs could not capitalise on their dominance and the hosts hung on to qualify with two games to spare for the first time.
