Rihanna, Anne Hathaway expected to join female ‘Ocean’s Eight’

News of the movie comes a month after the release of the all-female remake of the beloved 1980s action comedy “Ghostbusters,” this time starring Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, that prompted a hate-filled backlash on social media. Production of on the Warner Bros. movie, to be called “Ocean’s Eight,” is expected to start in October, with director Gary Ross, Hollywood websites Deadline and Variety reported. Warner Bros. declined to comment. Ross told movie website SlashFilm in June that the movie would continue the “Ocean’s Eleven” trilogy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, as well as having a similar light-hearted tone. “Ocean’s Eleven,” in which Clooney and accomplices rob three Las Vegas casinos, made some $450 million at the worldwide box office on its 2001 release. “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen” followed, bringing in another $670 million for Warner Bros. Actress Mindy Kaling, star of U.S. TV comedy series “The Mindy Project,” is also expected to join the “Ocean’s Eight” cast, along with Asian American rapper Awkwafina. Ross told SlashFilm in a June interview that the idea for “Ocean’s Eight” had been in the works for years and that director Steven Soderbergh would be a producer on the upcoming film. “Ghostbusters,” a reboot of the beloved 1984 movie with Bill Murray, stars some of America’s funniest women in the entertainment industry. But ever since plans were announced a year ago for the movie, the decision to go with a new, female cast has provoked controversy online and led to the trailer earning the distinction of being the most disliked in YouTube history. “Ghostbusters” went on to earn generally warm reviews and has taken more than $180 million at the worldwide box office since its July 15 release, according to film tracker BoxOfficeMojo.com. Syria: Four Dead In Suspected Chlorine Gas Attack in Aleppo

ALEPPO - At least four people have died after a suspected chlorine gas attack on the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo. The gas is believed to have been dropped alongside barrel bombs on the Zubdiya neighbourhood, which is in the rebel-held part of the city. Hamza Khatib, manager of Al Quds hospital, told Reuters that he had recorded four deaths and 55 injuries. Mr Khatib said he was saving pieces of patients’ clothing and pieces of the bombs as evidence. A Syrian rescue worker said a mother and her two children were among the dead. A video was posted online by the Aleppo Media Centre, an opposition news portal, which showed a child and adults wearing breathing

apparatus. Two men reported a strong smell of gas and said they saw barrel bombs before people began to suffer breathing and eye problems. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that barrel bombs had struck the neighbourhood, but made no mention of chlorine gas. Both sides deny using chemical weapons but United Nations investigators say that sarin gas was used in Eastern Ghouta

In late 2015, mustard gas was used in the conflict, confirmed by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. It is not clear in either case which side was to blame. United Nations emergency relief co-ordinator Stephen O’Brien had said he was willing to consider the Russian plan, but warned the pause needed to last at least 48 hours because the main supply route into the city, cut off by government forces last month, is so damaged only smaller trucks can be used. He said: “When we’re offered

Still, it must be without burdening them with a lesson because competence is related to the integrity of the students. “Why must it be competence? The twenty-first century demands for the children with integrity such as having honesty, fairness and competence. Do not let our children after completing school be unable to live in a

society, have no social intelligence or have antipathy,” he said. A member of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Gede Suamba, said the reason to apply full-day school to make children not fall into negative activities outside school makes less sense. Moreover, the majority of elementary school children are still happy to play. Their mind burden should have alleviated from the too long school time. “Do not let our children at elementary school get stressed. On that account, it needs a comprehensive study first because when applied by force, it will reap many protests from parents because the local conditions are not the same,” said the legislator in charge of the educational issues. Potential of MICE tourism in Bali great

Contribution to regional revenue reaches 30-40 percent

MANGUPURA - The government has put the meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) as a superior national tourism product because of its contribution to the foreign tourist visit is very significant and quite encouraging the improvement of domestic travels. MICE belongs to the top five bringing in foreign travelers, in addition to shopping and culinary tourism, religious and heritage tourism, marine tourism and sports tourism. “In addition to the increasing growth, MICE competitiveness of Indonesia at global market must also be increased from the current condition,” said Deputy Assistant of the Business and Government Market Segment Development, Tazbir, in the MICE coordination meeting across the ministries or agencies at Hotel Grand Mega, Wednesday (Aug. 10). In accordance with the mandate of the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, the MICE growth should be increased from five percent to ten percent in 2019 to come. Based on the data of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Indonesia lies in the 42nd position of the world and 12th position in the AsiaPacific region, an increase of eight

positions in the Asia-Pacific region with the increase of event from 76 to 150 in 2019. Contribution of MICE to the increase of foreign and domestic traveler movement and foreign exchange earnings will also increase significantly, where foreign exchange is projected to reach USD 2.5 billion. “These conditions will make the tourism sector worth serving as the national economic driving sector,” he added. Wardawan, the Marketing Division Head at the Bali Tourism Office said that Bali has great potential in MICE tourism because of the advantages in terms of natural beauty, cultural and tourism facilities. So, its contribution to the increase in tourist arrivals and revenue is significant by about 30-40 percent in terms of hotel and restaurant tax. According to him, the potential MICE should be maintained because the spending of MICE travelers in Bali is

much larger than that of leisure travelers. On the other hand, the obstacles of MICE tourism such as lack of awareness of the importance of MICE activities and the need for promotion on an ongoing basis to foreign countries should be addressed. The other obstacle is the lack of online database and comprehensive nature, the lack of accessibility such as direct flight, and souvenir items given to incentive participants still considered as import. On annual average, there are around 6-10 international events either meetings or incentives held in Bali. “It is our future problem because the participants of the incentive require an appreciation in the form of souvenirs. In fact, the souvenirs brought from Bali are still categorized into imported goods,” he explained. The events classified into MICE tourism involving foreign and domestic participants are often not recorded whereas it is quite important for the development of tourism, especially MICE. AMLAPURA — Performance of colossal genjek a cappella on Wednesday (Aug. 10) drew the admiration of the sixth president of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). According to him, the colossal genjek has the beauty of typical traditional dance and music of Karangasem district. Seeing Bali is so rich in terms of culture, he asked Bali to consistently preserve Balinese culture from the onslaught of globalization. Such colossal genjek looked stunning with the collaboration of fragmentary show telling about the story of struggle for the independence from Dutch colonial rule. Compactness of the genjek dancers forming a distinctive singing art becomes interesting and attractive. Appearance of the thousands of genjek dancers caused the invited guests comprising a number of figures, such as SBY, Chairman of Golkar Party Setya Novanto, Deputy Governor of Bali Ketut Sudikerta, senator from Bali Gusti Ngurah Arya Wedakarna and Cok Ratmadi as well as the Regent of Klungkung I Nyoman Suwirta to adequately enjoy the colossal genjek performance. “I quite enjoy this colossal genjek. The initiator should be appreciated,” said SBY coming to Karangasem with Ani Yudhoyono. Two important aspects become the concern of SBY. Firstly, the beauty of traditional dance and typical music of Karangasem must be preserved. In the current era, he thought the globalization indeed presents foreign culture. He admitted it is difficult to be avoided and can easily affect the people of Indonesia. Actually, Indonesia especially Bali is rich in culture. Music, dance and various other arts have become invaluable assets for Bali. These should be supported so that they can be inherited by future

generations. SBY admitted that during ten years of leading this country, he never missed attending the Bali Arts Festival (BAF). He hoped Balinese people to maintain and preserve their culture. This message is not only intended for Balinese people, but also for all the people of Indonesia to continuously preserve their respective local culture. Aside from cultural conservation, the colossal genjek a cappella seems also appropriate to be staged in the commemoration of the Independence Day. Approaching the seconds the celebration of the Independence Day of Indonesia, the collaboration with fragmentary show composed by the artist Ni Made Kinten describes the heroism of the best native people to Karangasem. Unfortunately, it was not specified how many dancers were involved in the show, whether met the target of 15, 361 people or not. However, seeing the situation at the Ujung Water Palace, the number of dancers approximately reached 5,000 people. Regent of Karangasem, I Gusti Ayu Mas Sumatri ensured that the agenda of colossal art will be carried out every year to boost the tourism of Karangasem with the target of 1 million tourist visits per year. DENPASAR - Seeing the current poor condition of the education in Bali, the discourse on full-day school policy must be responded by considering the condition of schools, teacher preparedness and infrastructure. The most important is the ability of students and the economic condition of students’ parents. All this time, at school the students require much energy especially food, so inevitably the students should bring more pocket money. In the meantime, the economic condition of their parents varies. “This matter should be observed closely because not all the students’ parents are in the middle to upper economic condition. Some of them also belong to middle to lower economic condition, even very poor condition. In addition, schools have different conditions and so do the teachers,” affirmed TIA Kusuma Wardhani, Wednesday (Aug. 10). As an educational guide in the region, her agency continued to support the government program. Nevertheless, she also wanted if the government should really reconsider the discourse on the fullday school in-depth before being applied and enforced at schools. Moreover, if it will be applied nationally chiefly in Bali, the number of teachers is quite inadequate. If full-day school is applied, the teacher must also be increased and so must the budget to pay the salary of contract teachers. “Since the full-day school gives more emphasis on extracurricular activities, more teachers having competency in their respective

discipline must be prepared in corresponding to the needs of students. Therefore, the government should be ready to recruit new contract teachers balanced with an adequate budget,” she added. She hoped that the government could make a thorough mapping to list the schools that must be ready to apply the full-day school. According to her, especially in Bali, there should be in-depth studies and each region should have a pilot project. “Of course, this discourse cannot be nationally imposed because the condition of each school in Indonesia is remarkably varied,” she concluded. In the meantime, an education observer, Dr. Ida Bagus Radendra Suastama, said there are several aspects needing to be clarified first before deciding to apply the fullday school policy. Without a planning and good quality of teachers, the full-day school will only become an additional burden for all parties and be unable to achieve the expected goals. On the other hand, parents must also consider

that their responsibility reduces and rely more on schools with the reason that more time is spent at school. Further, she said that full-day school absolutely needs a great responsibility and seriousness in the implementation. Students do not only ‘spend their time’ at school but also move their time at home or in the community to school. “I am also skeptical about the maturation of planning. Hopefully, there will be no negligence when they are at school and they can get adequate attention because they have sacrificed their time with family for the full-day school,” she said. Radendra hoped the discourse on the full-day school is not just a sensation of the new minister to make him look different. The policy needs in-depth studies and should not be implemented in a hurry. Moreover, it is said the quality of many teachers remains not ideal as a teacher. A teacher must not necessarily be smart, but the most important is the sincerity and spirit to educate the children of the nation. “In this context, if the full-day school is applied, our students will be forced to dilute togetherness with family and community, while the results do not certainly meet the expectations. Clear concept and quality teachers should be completely prepared in advance,” she affirmed. (win)

Rampant trafficking of endangered animals in Indonesia is also highlighted. Although they stay lower than in Africa, the trafficking of wildlife has reached a fantastic figure, almost equal to drugs. He expected there will be severe sanctions against the perpetrators and no tolerance will be given. “We have

revised the Law No.5/1990 and want more severe penalties for traffickers of the endangered animals so as to provide a deterrent effect,” said Fathoni. In addition to the camping and a number of conservation activities, the participants also planted coral reef on the beach. From a number of water locations in the TNBB tried for the breeding, one of the fastest locations is on Karangsewu Beach. Condition of coral reef ecosystem scattered around

the beach in the TNBB belongs to the medium and good category. Some coral ecosystems have even suffered damages and decline. It is the impact of human activities such as fish bombing, fishing poisoning and trafficking of ornamental coral reef and pest attack. ported by Regulation of Minister of Home Affairs No.70/M-DAG/ PER/12/2013 on the restructuring guidelines of traditional markets, shopping malls and modern stores. “If the government hinders, it can be penalized because there are rules, while the Trade and Industry Agency only has to obligation to regulate,” he explained. Gianyar district has also been conducting studies related to the ideal capacity of chain modern stores in this area of the arts, tailored to the number of population. It is obtained that the ideal number of modern stores in Gianyar amounts to 79 units. The quota also includes the plan to increase in years to come. But in reality, based on the latest data of the Gianyar Trade and

Industry Agency, the number of modern stores has reached 115 units. More than 2,000 incidents, including sexual abuse, assault and attempted self-harm, were reported over two years at the Australianfunded Nauru detention centre, more than half involving children, Guardian Australia reported. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton on Thursday said asylum seekers were lying about sexual abuse and repeated comments he made earlier this year that refugee advocates were encouraging detainees to self-harm and set themselves on fire. “I have been made aware of some incidents that have reported false allegations of sexual assault, because in the end, people have paid money to people smugglers and they want to come to our country,” Dutton said in an interview on

Australian radio. “Some people have even gone to the extent of self-harming and people have self-immolated in an effort to get to Australia. Certainly some have made false allegations.” Under its hardline immigration policy, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach Australia by boat are sent for processing to Australianfunded camps on Nauru, which holds about 500 people, and on Manus island in Papua New Guinea. They are told they will never be settled in Australia. The harsh conditions and reports of systemic child abuse at the camps have drawn wide criticism at home and abroad. Australia, however, has vowed there will be no change to the policy, which has been pursued

by successive governments. Australia says the policy is needed to stop asylum seekers dying at sea on the dangerous boat journey from Indonesia to Australia. Hundreds of people died attempting the trip in the years before the policy was put in place. Refugee advocates said the leaked reports show the urgent need to end Australia’s offshore detention policy and that asylum seekers must be given medical and psychological support. Hayley Ballinger, a child protection worker at the Nauru detention centre from 2014-15, said that it was an “absolute insult” to suggest that refugees had lied about abuse that has now been widely documented. “All of the statements speak for themselves. Certainly the clients I saw there suffered and they really suffered. And this stuff really, really did happen. We witnessed it first-hand,” Ballinger told Reuters. (rtr)

ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines Inc on Wednesday canceled more than 300 flights and upended thousands of travelers’ plans for the third day in a row after a power outage hit its computer systems, though it forecast a return to normal operations later this afternoon. Delta, the No. 2 U.S. airline by passenger traffic, said systems that allow customer service agents to process check-ins and dispatch aircraft are now functioning normally. Most of Wednesday’s delays and cancellations are the result of flight crews being displaced or running up against maximum allowed work hours, it said. As of 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT), Delta said it had canceled 311 flights on the day, adding to the more than 1,600 cancellations since Monday. Another 2,540 flights departed on Wednesday, with 70 percent of them within 30 minutes of their scheduled times, the airline said. “We’re in the final hours of bouncing back from the disruption,” Bill Lentsch, Delta’s senior vice president for airport customer service and airline operations, said in an online posting. The travel havoc at one of the world’s largest carriers has brought into focus the vulnerability of airlines’ technology infrastructure. Experts say mergers - and sometimes insufficient investment in back-end technology - have left airlines with a hodgepodge of systems. What is more, a drive by companies to automate operations, from mobile boarding passes to check-in kiosks, means the impact of any single glitch will multiply. Delta said problems arose when critical systems did not switch over to a backup source following a power surge and outage on Monday. The airline is still investigating the cause, Chief Executive Ed Bastian said in an online video post, adding that the company has invested “hundreds of millions of dollars” in infrastructure upgrades and backup systems. “I’m sorry we let you down. We’ll do everything that we can to make certain this does not happen again,” Bastian said in the video. “There have been no indications of a hack,” Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter added in an emailed statement. Indonesia urged to take stern action on illegal bird trade

Mexico central bank seen holding key rate as peso stabilizes MEXICO CITY - Mexico’s central bank is expected to hold its key interest rate steady on Thursday after a sharply depreciated Mexican peso steadied and consumer prices rose less than expected. All 17 analysts surveyed by Reuters expect the Bank of Mexico to leave its benchmark rate at 4.25 percent, after a unanimous 50basis-point hike in June aimed at calming concerns a peso slump could stoke inflation. But the central bank is expected to hike the rate again by 25 basis points in the fourth quarter, the poll showed, amid expectations the Federal Reserve will raise benchmark U.S. interest rates again this year after a stronger-than-expected July U.S. employment report. The peso has firmed around 6 percent since hitting a life low of 19.5225 per dollar on June 24, the day after Britain’s Brexit vote sent shockwaves through global markets. It is currently trading broadly around the same levels seen after late June’s aggressive rate hike.

Egypt’s urban consumer price inflation had been rising since April, when it entered double-digit territory propelled by a near 14-percent devaluation of the Egyptian pound and the run-up to the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, when food prices rise. Ramadan ended in early July, but data published by Egypt’s statistics authority showed that food inflation continued to rise, offset by easing inflation in housing and utilities. Annual core inflation, which strips out items such as fruit and vegetables whose prices are volatile, eased slightly to 12.31 percent in July from 12.37 percent in June though it remains at a seven-year high. The central bank attributed the headline consumer price inflation figure to “a favourable base effect from the previous year” when Ra-

madan fell in July and prices were elevated. Egypt has struggled to restore economic growth since a 2011 uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule. The ensuing turmoil scared off tourists and foreign investors, key sources of hard currency. Foreign reserves have more than halved since before the 2011 uprising to about $15 billion in July, enough for less than three months of imports. The central bank devalued the pound to 8.78 per dollar in March and has hiked interest rates to hold back prices. But the pound continues to face pressure on the black market due to the dollar shortage. Economists say another devaluation is likely. Egypt announced in late July that it was entering the final stages of

negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a $12 billion loan programme over three years. While easing the pressure on public finances, an IMF deal would increase pressure on Egypt to push ahead with reforms that include introducing Value Added Tax and slashing subsidies. Both moves are likely to push up prices, economists say. Economists are broadly in agreement that Egypt’s Monetary Policy Committee is likely to raise interest rates further. “The central bank doesn’t have an inflation target but policymakers have previously suggested that they are more comfortable with inflation in single digits,” Londonbased Capital Economics said in a research note. “We remain of the view that the MPC will hike interest rates further this year.” President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been at pains to protect the poorest from the effects of double-digit inflation, with the army offering cut-price food to the public.(rtr)

Haris asks president to set up independent investigation team JAKARTA - Haris Azhar, the coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has asked President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to set up an independent team to investigate the alleged testimony of drug big shot Freddy Budiman. Freddy Budiman, who was one of four drug death row prisoners executed late last month on the island of Nusakambangan, was allegedly claimed to have bribed leaders of law enforcement agencies with hundreds of billions of rupiah to protect his illicit business. Haris Azhar, who is in the center of big controversy for publishing the alleged testimony, have been reported to the police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) on charge of defamation by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) , state Police and the military (TNI).

Haris asked the president to step in and set up a special team to find the truth behind the statement accusing element of the state apparatuses of being involved in drug business. “In the Police Headquarters there is a team. In BNN and TNI there are also such teams. I ask the president to step in by set up a team that the teams of the three institutions could work in synergy with the team formed by the president,” Haris said here on Wednesday. A number of leading lawyers in Jakarta have also urged the president to form a team made of strictly independent figures. Haris said investigations by the independent teams of the police, BNN and TNI, would not be enough to get the truth from the alleged testimony given to him by Freddy in 2014. “Responses of the three institu-

tions were more as a clarification,” he said, adding, while the purpose is to get to the root allegation. He said it would be better if the president forms a special team to unearth the truth and unveil any involvement of the state apparatuses in drug Mafia. He said he hoped that the information he got from Freddy could be used as an opportunity to reform law enforcement agencies and take action against apparatuses involved in the drug business. Under Indonesia’s conservation laws, trade in protected wildlife carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and fines of 100 million rupiah ($7,700). Traffic said a similar survey in Jakarta in 2014 documented about 19,000 birds for sale over a threeday period. Putin accuses Ukraine of trying to provoke a new conflict over Crimea

MOSCOW - Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine on Wednesday of using terrorist tactics to try to provoke a new conflict and destabilise annexed Crimea after Russia said it had thwarted two armed Ukrainian attempts to get saboteurs into the contested peninsula. Russia’s FSB security service said two people were killed in clashes and its forces had dismantled a Ukrainian spy network inside Crimea. Kiev denied the assertions, calling them an attempt by Moscow to create an excuse to escalate towards a war. The Russian president accused Kiev of playing a dangerous game and said he saw no point in holding a new round of talks about the troubled peace process in eastern Ukraine on the sidelines of a G20 summit in China next month. “The people who seized power in Kiev ... have switched to terror tactics instead of searching for ways for a peaceful settlement,” Putin told a news conference, saying Russia would not let such actions pass without a response. “The attempt to provoke an outbreak of violence, to provoke a conflict is nothing other than a desire to distract (Ukrainian) society from its problems,” he added, calling Ukraine’s actions “criminal.” Putin’s comments stirred fears that Russia, which has been steadily reinforcing Crimea militarily, may be considering new military action. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the Russian accusations were a cynical pretext to make more military threats against

Ukraine. “Russian accusations towards Ukraine of terrorism in the occupied Crimea sound as preposterous and cynical as the statements of the Russian leadership about the absence of the Russian troops in Donbass (region of Ukraine),” Poroshenko said. RIO DE JANEIRO - Leonidas of Rhodes would recognise a kindred spirit in Michael Phelps of Baltimore. After 2,160 years of history, give or take a decade, the greatest athlete of ancient Greece is no longer alone on his pedestal. The medal machine that is Phelps on Tuesday matched what must surely rank as the oldest record in sport when he chalked up his 12th individual Olympic swimming gold medal. Leonidas, a runner who competed between 164 and 152 BC according to Olympic historians, is the only other athlete to have won 12 solo titles. There is plenty of documentary evidence to attest to the dominance of Phelps, winner of a record 21 golds and 25 medals in an astonishing career spanning five Games that is far from finished. The achievements of Leonidas rely on somewhat sketchier accounts, provided much later by

Philostratus the Athenian and Pausanias who hailed the runner’s 12 victories through four Olympiads. The sentiments expressed by Phelps in the early hours of Wednesday after winning the 200m butterfly title would surely have resonated with Leonidas, even if the Greek had to compete with a shield and helmet. “That’s a lot of medals,” grinned the American. “We got a lot of medals. It’s just insane. It’s mindblowing.” Phelps has by far the most of any Olympic athlete and is the only one to win eight golds at a single Games, an achievement that earned much fanfare plus a $1 million bonus in Beijing in 2008. The host country advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Denmark 4-0 Wednesday, avoiding another embarrassing elimination in front of the home fans. Gabigol scored twice and Gabriel Jesus and Luan added the others at the Arena Fonte Nova as Brazil continues its quest to win the Olympic gold medal in soccer for the first time. “The team played a great match,” Brazil coach Rogerio Micale said. “We found our game and this time the ball went in. Brazil had been held to scoreless draws in its first two group games and needed a victory to guarantee a spot in the knockout round. Cahill, who has won 91 caps for Australia and is the country’s record goal scorer with 47, has signed a three-year contract with Melbourne City. The midfielder will play for two years then join the club’s coaching staff in 2018, the team said on Thursday. “It’s the biggest player signing in the League’s history, it’s a red letter day for the code,” Football Federation Australia’s CEO David Gallop told reporters in Sydney. “I think for many Australians when you think football, you think Tim Cahill. “Scoring goals, celebrating by punching the corner flag, hopefully we are going to see plenty of that over the next couple of seasons, not only in the A-League but of course for the Socceroos on the road to Russia 2018.” Cahill, 36, has represented his

RIO DE JANEIRO - Leonidas of Rhodes would recognise a kindred spirit in Michael Phelps of Baltimore. After 2,160 years of history, give or take a decade, the greatest athlete of ancient Greece is no longer alone on his pedestal. The medal machine that is Phelps on Tuesday matched what must surely rank as the oldest record in sport when he chalked up his 12th individual Olympic swimming gold medal. Leonidas, a runner who competed between 164 and 152 BC according to Olympic historians, is the only other athlete to have won 12 solo titles. There is plenty of documentary evidence to attest to the dominance of Phelps, winner of a record 21 golds and 25 medals in an astonishing career spanning five Games that is far from finished. The achievements of Leonidas rely on somewhat sketchier accounts, provided much later by

Philostratus the Athenian and Pausanias who hailed the runner’s 12 victories through four Olympiads. The sentiments expressed by Phelps in the early hours of Wednesday after winning the 200m butterfly title would surely have resonated with Leonidas, even if the Greek had to compete with a shield and helmet. “That’s a lot of medals,” grinned the American. “We got a lot of medals. It’s just insane. It’s mindblowing.” Phelps has by far the most of any Olympic athlete and is the only one to win eight golds at a single Games, an achievement that earned much fanfare plus a $1 million bonus in Beijing in 2008. In Rio, he has so far taken three golds - one individual and two relays - and on Thursday he could become the first swimmer to win the same event, the 200m individual medley, at four successive Games. Mexico and Indonesia, two more of the world’s most populous nations, have just 19 golds between them. Putin accuses Ukraine of trying to provoke a new conflict over Crimea

MOSCOW - Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine on Wednesday of using terrorist tactics to try to provoke a new conflict and destabilise annexed Crimea after Russia said it had thwarted two armed Ukrainian attempts to get saboteurs into the contested peninsula. Russia’s FSB security service said two people were killed in clashes and its forces had dismantled a Ukrainian spy network inside Crimea. Kiev denied the assertions, calling them an attempt by Moscow to create an excuse to escalate towards a war. The Russian president accused Kiev of playing a dangerous game and said he saw no point in holding a new round of talks about the troubled peace process in eastern Ukraine on the sidelines of a G20 summit in China next month. “The people who seized power in Kiev ... have switched to terror tactics instead of searching for ways for a peaceful settlement,” Putin told a news conference, saying Russia would not let such actions pass without a response. “The attempt to provoke an outbreak of violence, to provoke a conflict is nothing other than a desire to distract (Ukrainian) society from its problems,” he added, calling Ukraine’s actions “criminal.” Putin’s comments stirred fears that Russia, which has been steadily reinforcing Crimea militarily, may be considering new military action. Mexico central bank seen holding key rate as peso stabilizes MEXICO CITY - Mexico’s central bank is expected to hold its key interest rate steady on Thursday after a sharply depreciated Mexican peso steadied and consumer prices rose less than expected. All 17 analysts surveyed by Reuters expect the Bank of Mexico to leave its benchmark rate at 4.25 percent, after a unanimous 50basis-point hike in June aimed at calming concerns a peso slump could stoke inflation. But the central bank is expected to hike the rate again by 25 basis points in the fourth quarter, the poll showed, amid expectations the Federal Reserve will raise benchmark U.S. interest rates again this year after a stronger-than-expected July U.S. employment report. The peso has firmed around 6 percent since hitting a life low of 19.5225 per dollar on June 24, the day after Britain’s Brexit vote sent shockwaves through global markets. It is currently trading broadly around the same levels seen after late June’s aggressive rate hike.

Egypt’s urban consumer price inflation had been rising since April, when it entered double-digit territory propelled by a near 14-percent devaluation of the Egyptian pound and the run-up to the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, when food prices rise. Ramadan ended in early July, but data published by Egypt’s statistics authority showed that food inflation continued to rise, offset by easing inflation in housing and utilities. Annual core inflation, which strips out items such as fruit and vegetables whose prices are volatile, eased slightly to 12.31 percent in July from 12.37 percent in June though it remains at a seven-year high. The central bank attributed the headline consumer price inflation figure to “a favourable base effect from the previous year” when Ra-

madan fell in July and prices were elevated. Egypt has struggled to restore economic growth since a 2011 uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule. The ensuing turmoil scared off tourists and foreign investors, key sources of hard currency. Foreign reserves have more than halved since before the 2011 uprising to about $15 billion in July, enough for less than three months of imports. The central bank devalued the pound to 8.78 per dollar in March and has hiked interest rates to hold back prices. But the pound continues to face pressure on the black market due to the dollar shortage. Economists say another devaluation is likely. Egypt announced in late July that it was entering the final stages of

negotiations with the International Monetary Fund for a $12 billion loan programme over three years. While easing the pressure on public finances, an IMF deal would increase pressure on Egypt to push ahead with reforms that include introducing Value Added Tax and slashing subsidies. Both moves are likely to push up prices, economists say. Economists are broadly in agreement that Egypt’s Monetary Policy Committee is likely to raise interest rates further. “The central bank doesn’t have an inflation target but policymakers have previously suggested that they are more comfortable with inflation in single digits,” Londonbased Capital Economics said in a research note. “We remain of the view that the MPC will hike interest rates further this year.” President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been at pains to protect the poorest from the effects of double-digit inflation, with the army offering cut-price food to the public.(rtr)

Haris asks president to set up independent investigation team JAKARTA - Haris Azhar, the coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has asked President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) to set up an independent team to investigate the alleged testimony of drug big shot Freddy Budiman. Freddy Budiman, who was one of four drug death row prisoners executed late last month on the island of Nusakambangan, was allegedly claimed to have bribed leaders of law enforcement agencies with hundreds of billions of rupiah to protect his illicit business. Haris Azhar, who is in the center of big controversy for publishing the alleged testimony, have been reported to the police Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) on charge of defamation by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) , state Police and the military (TNI).

Haris asked the president to step in and set up a special team to find the truth behind the statement accusing element of the state apparatuses of being involved in drug business. “In the Police Headquarters there is a team. In BNN and TNI there are also such teams. I ask the president to step in by set up a team that the teams of the three institutions could work in synergy with the team formed by the president,” Haris said here on Wednesday. A number of leading lawyers in Jakarta have also urged the president to form a team made of strictly independent figures. Haris said investigations by the independent teams of the police, BNN and TNI, would not be enough to get the truth from the alleged testimony given to him by Freddy in 2014. “Responses of the three institu-

tions were more as a clarification,” he said, adding, while the purpose is to get to the root allegation. He said it would be better if the president forms a special team to unearth the truth and unveil any involvement of the state apparatuses in drug Mafia. He said he hoped that the information he got from Freddy could be used as an opportunity to reform law enforcement agencies and take action against apparatuses involved in the drug business. reef has been at issue. He invited all the walk of life in the communities to preserve the coral reef, especially on the Karangsewu Beach. Rampant trafficking of endangered animals in Indonesia is also highlighted. Although they stay lower than in Africa, the trafficking of wildlife has reached a fantastic figure, almost equal to drugs. He expected there will be severe sanctions against the perpetrators and no tolerance will be given. “We have

revised the Law No.5/1990 and want more severe penalties for traffickers of the endangered animals so as to provide a deterrent effect,” said Fathoni. In addition to the camping and a number of conservation activities, the participants also planted coral reef on the beach. From a number of water locations in the TNBB tried for the breeding, one of the fastest locations is on Karangsewu Beach. Condition of coral reef ecosystem scattered around

the beach in the TNBB belongs to the medium and good category. Some coral ecosystems have even suffered damages and decline. It is the impact of human activities such as fish bombing, fishing poisoning and trafficking of ornamental coral reef and pest attack. This regulation is also sup-

ported by Regulation of Minister of Home Affairs No.70/M-DAG/ PER/12/2013 on the restructuring guidelines of traditional markets, shopping malls and modern stores. “If the government hinders, it can be penalized because there are rules, while the Trade and Industry Agency only has to obligation to regulate,” he explained. Gianyar district has also been conducting studies related to the ideal capacity of chain modern stores in this area of the arts, tailored to the number of population. It is obtained that the ideal number of modern stores in Gianyar amounts to 79 units. The quota also includes the plan to increase in years to come. But in reality, based on the latest data of the Gianyar Trade and

Industry Agency, the number of modern stores has reached 115 units. Ironically, only 61 units of them are ascertained to have the permit, while 54 others do not or can be categorized to be illegal. “Those having no permit become the affairs of the BPPT. Immigration Minister Peter Dutton on Thursday said asylum seekers were lying about sexual abuse and repeated comments he made earlier this year that refugee advocates were encouraging detainees to self-harm and set themselves on fire. “I have been made aware of some incidents that have reported false allegations of sexual assault, because in the end, people have paid money to people smugglers and they want to come to our country,” Dutton said in an interview on

Australian radio. “Some people have even gone to the extent of self-harming and people have self-immolated in an effort to get to Australia. Certainly some have made false allegations.” Under its hardline immigration policy, asylum seekers intercepted trying to reach Australia by boat are sent for processing to Australianfunded camps on Nauru, which holds about 500 people, and on Manus island in Papua New Guinea. They are told they will never be settled in Australia. The harsh conditions and reports of systemic child abuse at the camps have drawn wide criticism at home and abroad. Australia, however, has vowed there will be no change to the policy, which has been pursued

by successive governments. Australia says the policy is needed to stop asylum seekers dying at sea on the dangerous boat journey from Indonesia to Australia. Hundreds of people died attempting the trip in the years before the policy was put in place. Refugee advocates said the leaked reports show the urgent need to end Australia’s offshore detention policy and that asylum seekers must be given medical and psychological support. Hayley Ballinger, a child protection worker at the Nauru detention centre from 2014-15, said that it was an “absolute insult” to suggest that refugees had lied about abuse that has now been widely documented. “All of the statements speak for themselves. ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines Inc on Wednesday canceled more than 300 flights and upended thousands of travelers’ plans for the third day in a row after a power outage hit its computer systems, though it forecast a return to normal operations later this afternoon. Delta, the No. 2 U.S. airline by passenger traffic, said systems that allow customer service agents to process check-ins and dispatch aircraft are now functioning normally. Most of Wednesday’s delays and cancellations are the result of flight crews being displaced or running up against maximum allowed work hours, it said. As of 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT), Delta said it had canceled 311 flights on the day, adding to the more than 1,600 cancellations since Monday. Another 2,540 flights departed on Wednesday, with 70 percent of them within 30 minutes of their scheduled times, the airline said. “We’re in the final hours of bouncing back from the disruption,” Bill Lentsch, Delta’s senior vice president for airport customer service and airline operations, said in an online posting. The travel havoc at one of the world’s largest carriers has brought into focus the vulnerability of airlines’ technology infrastructure. Experts say mergers - and sometimes insufficient investment in back-end technology - have left airlines with a hodgepodge of systems. What is more, a drive by companies to automate operations, from mobile boarding passes to check-in kiosks, means the impact of any single glitch will multiply. Delta said problems arose when critical systems did not switch over to a backup source following a power surge and outage on Monday. The airline is still investigating the cause, Chief Executive Ed Bastian said in an online video post, adding that the company has invested “hundreds of millions of dollars” in infrastructure upgrades and backup systems. “I’m sorry we let you down. We’ll do everything that we can to make certain this does not happen again,” Bastian said in the video. “There have been no indications of a hack,” Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter added in an emailed statement. According to him, the colossal genjek has the beauty of typical traditional dance and music of Karangasem district. Seeing Bali is so rich in terms of culture, he asked Bali to consistently preserve Balinese culture from the onslaught of globalization. Such colossal genjek looked stunning with the collaboration of fragmentary show telling about the story of struggle for the independence from Dutch colonial rule. Compactness of the genjek dancers forming a distinctive singing art becomes interesting and attractive. Appearance of the thousands of genjek dancers caused the invited guests comprising a number of figures, such as SBY, Chairman of Golkar Party Setya Novanto, Deputy Governor of Bali Ketut Sudikerta, senator from Bali Gusti Ngurah Arya Wedakarna and Cok Ratmadi as well as the Regent of Klungkung I Nyoman Suwirta to adequately enjoy the colossal genjek performance. “I quite enjoy this colossal genjek. DENPASAR - Seeing the current poor condition of the education in Bali, the discourse on full-day school policy must be responded by considering the condition of schools, teacher preparedness and infrastructure. The most important is the ability of students and the economic condition of students’ parents. All this time, at school the students require much energy especially food, so inevitably the students should bring more pocket money. In the meantime, the economic condition of their parents varies. “This matter should be observed closely because not all the students’ parents are in the middle to upper economic condition. Some of them also belong to middle to lower economic condition, even very poor condition. In addition, schools have different conditions and so do the teachers,” affirmed TIA Kusuma Wardhani, Wednesday (Aug. 10). As an educational guide in the region, her agency continued to support the government program. Nevertheless, she also wanted if the government should really reconsider the discourse on the fullday school in-depth before being applied and enforced at schools. Moreover, if it will be applied nationally chiefly in Bali, the number of teachers is quite inadequate. If full-day school is applied, the teacher must also be increased and so must the budget to pay the salary of contract teachers. “Since the full-day school gives more emphasis on extracurricular activities, more teachers having competency in their respective

discipline must be prepared in corresponding to the needs of students. Therefore, the government should be ready to recruit new contract teachers balanced with an adequate budget,” she added. She hoped that the government could make a thorough mapping to list the schools that must be ready to apply the full-day school. According to her, especially in Bali, there should be in-depth studies and each region should have a pilot project. “Of course, this discourse cannot be nationally imposed because the condition of each school in Indonesia is remarkably varied,” she concluded. In the meantime, an education observer, Dr. Ida Bagus Radendra Suastama, said there are several aspects needing to be clarified first before deciding to apply the fullday school policy. Without a planning and good quality of teachers, the full-day school will only become an additional burden for all parties and be unable to achieve the expected goals. On the other hand, parents must also consider

that their responsibility reduces and rely more on schools with the reason that more time is spent at school. Further, she said that full-day school absolutely needs a great responsibility and seriousness in the implementation. Students do not only ‘spend their time’ at school but also move their time at home or in the community to school. “I am also skeptical about the maturation of planning. Hopefully, there will be no negligence when they are at school and they can get adequate attention because they have sacrificed their time with family for the full-day school,” she said. Radendra hoped the discourse on the full-day school is not just a sensation of the new minister to make him look different. The policy needs in-depth studies and should not be implemented in a hurry. Moreover, it is said the quality of many teachers remains not ideal as a teacher. A teacher must not necessarily be smart, but the most important is the sincerity and spirit to educate the children of the nation. “In this context, if the full-day school is applied, our students will be forced to dilute togetherness with family and community, while the results do not certainly meet the expectations. Clear concept and quality teachers should be completely prepared in advance,” she affirmed. (win)

society, have no social intelligence or have antipathy,” he said. A member of Commission IV of the Bali House of Representatives, Gede Suamba, said the reason to apply full-day school to make children not fall into negative activities outside school makes less sense. Moreover, the majority of elementary school children are still happy to play. Their mind burden should have alleviated from the too long school time. “Do not let our children at elementary school get stressed. On that account, it needs a comprehensive study first because when applied by force, it will reap many protests from parents because the local conditions are not the same,” said the legislator in charge of the educational issues. Suamba asked the government to address the diversity of regions in Indonesia. It would be very unfortu-

MANGUPURA - The government has put the meeting, incentive, convention and exhibition (MICE) as a superior national tourism product because of its contribution to the foreign tourist visit is very significant and quite encouraging the improvement of domestic travels. MICE belongs to the top five bringing in foreign travelers, in addition to shopping and culinary tourism, religious and heritage tourism, marine tourism and sports tourism. “In addition to the increasing growth, MICE competitiveness of Indonesia at global market must also be increased from the current condition,” said Deputy Assistant of the Business and Government Market Segment Development, Tazbir, in the MICE coordination meeting across the ministries or agencies at Hotel Grand Mega, Wednesday (Aug. 10). In accordance with the mandate of the Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, the MICE growth should be increased from five percent to ten percent in 2019 to come. Based on the data of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Indonesia lies in the 42nd position of the world and 12th position in the AsiaPacific region, an increase of eight

positions in the Asia-Pacific region with the increase of event from 76 to 150 in 2019. Contribution of MICE to the increase of foreign and domestic traveler movement and foreign exchange earnings will also increase significantly, where foreign exchange is projected to reach USD 2.5 billion. “These conditions will make the tourism sector worth serving as the national economic driving sector,” he added. Wardawan, the Marketing Division Head at the Bali Tourism Office said that Bali has great potential in MICE tourism because of the advantages in terms of natural beauty, cultural and tourism facilities. So, its contribution to the increase in tourist arrivals and revenue is significant by about 30-40 percent in terms of hotel and restaurant tax. According to him, the potential MICE should be maintained because the spending of MICE travelers in Bali is

much larger than that of leisure travelers. On the other hand, the obstacles of MICE tourism such as lack of awareness of the importance of MICE activities and the need for promotion on an ongoing basis to foreign countries should be addressed. The other obstacle is the lack of online database and comprehensive nature, the lack of accessibility such as direct flight, and souvenir items given to incentive participants still considered as import. On annual average, there are around 6-10 international events either meetings or incentives held in Bali. “It is our future problem because the participants of the incentive require an appreciation in the form of souvenirs. In fact, the souvenirs brought from Bali are still categorized into imported goods,” he explained. Syria: Four Dead In Suspected Chlorine Gas Attack in Aleppo

ALEPPO - At least four people have died after a suspected chlorine gas attack on the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo. The gas is believed to have been dropped alongside barrel bombs on the Zubdiya neighbourhood, which is in the rebel-held part of the city. Hamza Khatib, manager of Al Quds hospital, told Reuters that he had recorded four deaths and 55 injuries.
