Bollywood hunks and heroes among the world’s top paid actors NEW DELHI — Bollywood films, with their colorful sets and hyper-coordinated song-anddance numbers, have catapulted five Indians into the ranks of the world’s highest paid male actors. Three of those actors— Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar — were in the top 10, outranking Hollywood A-listers such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio. The rankings, compiled by Forbes, were released last week and included actors working outside Hollywood, allowing an international comparison of star earnings for the first time. That change also meant Hong Kong martial arts darling Jackie Chan was 2nd placed, with most of his $50 million in earnings last year made from films produced in China. American actor Robert Downey Jr. topped the list for the third year in a row, earning $80 million in 2014. The two highest-paid Indian actors, Khan and Bachchan, tied for 7th, each earning $33.5 million last year. “I am surprised it has taken so long” to get global rankings, said Bollywood publicist Raju Kariya, who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years. India’s male actors, easily recognizable by their aviator sunglasses and tight designer clothes, are so popular that “everyone from 5-year-olds to elderly aunties are completely gaga over them.” Khan’s place also demonstrated that Bollywood stars can get through scandal relatively unscathed. The action hero is the subject of nonstop media attention amid an ongoing court case for a 2002 hit-and-run that killed a homeless man and injured four others. His popularity also hasn’t suffered from his 2006 conviction for poaching an endangered blackbuck deer, which he has appealed. Even though the top Bollywood hunks are raking in cash, the earnings of Hindilanguage films are languishing. Bollywood is the world’s most prolific producer of

films, churning out some 1,000 year, double that of Hollywood. Yet so far this year, only half a dozen or so Bollywood films have turned a profit, while most of the hundreds that come out of Mumbai’s film industry are money losers. As India’s economy grows and the middle class expands, more people are buying theater tickets and the number of movie theaters has increased. But Bollywood is facing increased pressure from imported films. The competition, particularly from Hollywood, is making India moviegoers more demanding and discerning, said film trade analyst Vinod Mirani. “Movies are actually getting worse” as money-making vehicles in India, he said. Up until the 1990s, film in India was usually financed by politicians and criminals. The industry has since modernized with financing coming from major companies. Foreign production houses Sony Pictures, The Walt Disney Co. and Universal Studios have also opened office in India. Reliance MediaWorks Ltd., owned by one of India’s richest tycoons, Anil Ambani, sold off its entire multiplex business, Big Cinemas, to UK’s Carnival Films Pvt. Ltd. last year for more than $100 million. Altogether, the five Bollywood stars made Indians the second-highest paid as a group, with combined earnings of $140.5 million. Salman Khan, for example, grossed more than $20 million just from his ‘Being Human’ clothing line last year, while Bachchan endorses more than a dozen products ranging from soft drinks to household paint. Bachchan, 72, who is so popular there is even a temple dedicated to him in the eastern city of Kolkata, was the oldest actor on the list, beating out his 63-year-old Irish colleague Liam Neeson, who made $19.5 million last year to land in 22nd place on the list. The third-highest ranked Bollywood actor was another action hero, Kumar, with earnings of $32.5 million last year putting him in the 9th spot. Lower on the list of 34 actors was Shah Rukh Khan, in 18th place, and Ranbir Kapoor, at No. 30. (ap)

NEW YORK — Howard Stern has revealed details about the secret wedding between Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, including that Jimmy Kimmel officiated. Stern was a guest at the Los Angeles ceremony last Wednesday that Aniston and Theroux disguised as a birthday bash for Theroux. Stern said on his radio show Monday that he knew beforehand that it was a wedding because the couple asked him to give a speech.

But Stern said the affair was extremely secretive and that guests had to hand over their phones. He said Kimmel did “a beautiful job” officiating, and that Sia performed. Other guests, he said, included Ellen DeGeneres, Whitney Cummings and Orlando Bloom. The marriage is the second for 46-year-old Aniston, who got divorced from Brad Pitt in 2005, and the first for 44-year-old Theroux. (ap)

Scorsese, DiCaprio to adapt ‘Devil in the White City’

NEW YORK — Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City” is finally headed to the big screen, with Martin Scorsese directing and Leonardo DiCaprio starring in it. Paramount Pictures confirmed Monday that it has optioned Larson’s best-seller. The screenplay will be adapted by Billy Ray, who scripted “Captain Phillips” and “The Hunger Games.”

The film marks the sixth feature together for Scorsese and DiCaprio, who last joined for “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Published in 2003, Larson’s nonfiction book is about the architect of Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair and a serial killer who used the fair as a setting for his murders. The book has long been a hot property in Hollywood, particularly pursued by DiCaprio. (ap)

The balance of the ecosystem is apparently never considered by those who manage the natural resources of this island. The carrying capacity of Bali is left unmonitored and poorly managed thus leading to a number of critical situations, including a clean water crisis. Given that there

is a clean water deficit of some 26.7 billion cubic meters, Bali is being urged to implement regulations immediately to address this issue. Expert observers consider Bali to be a particularly water crisis-prone zone and have stated that that the importance of water management

should not be underestimated. According to a number of academic studies, some of the factors that need to be addressed in terms of water management in Bali include; the tourism industry, population growth and the rampant exploitation of groundwater. The intrusion

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Google forms a new holding company, ‘Alphabet’

SAN FRANCISCO — Google is creating a new company to oversee its highly lucrative Internet business and a growing flock of other ventures, including some — like building self-driving cars and researching ways to prolong human life — that are known more for their ambition than for turning an immediate profit.

The new company will be called “Alphabet,” Google CEO and cofounder Larry Page announced Monday. Page said he’ll be CEO of the new holding company, while longtime Google executive Sundar Pichai will become CEO of Google’s core business, including its search engine, online advertising operation and YouTube video service. While the company will still use the Google name for those core services, Page said the new structure will provide more independence for divisions like Nest, which makes Internet-connected home appliances, and Calico, which is conducting cutting-edge health research. Analysts said the move may also be a nod to Wall Street demands for more fiscal accountability: As part of the reorganization, Page said the company will begin reporting financial results by segments. That should give a clearer picture of how Google’s core Internet business is performing, separate from other ventures, said analyst Colin Gillis of the investment firm BGC Partners. Google reported more than $14 billion in profit on $66 billion in sales last

year, most of it from lucrative Internet advertising, while other ventures have required large investments without showing immediate returns. The reorganization also cements the importance of Pichai, who is viewed by many as a potential successor to Page. Google’s other co-founder, Sergey Brin, will be president of the new holding company. With the reorganization, Page signaled that he wants to give more authority to CEOs of the companies that will be part of the new entity known as Alphabet. Businesses that will operate separately under the Alphabet umbrella include Calico, which Google established to conduct health research in 2013; Nest, which Google acquired in 2014; Fiber, which is building highspeed broadband networks in several cities; and Google X , the research lab responsible for Google’s self-driving car venture and previously developed its controversial Internet headset, known as Glass. Alphabet will also oversee Google Ventures and Google Capital, two corporate investment entities that focus on early- and growth-stage startups.

Google’s YouTube video division, however, will remain part of the core business under Pichai, although Page made a point of praising its chief, longtime ad executive Susan Wojcicki. Google historically has not reported earnings separately for the YouTube business. “It may not be quite ready yet,” Gillis said of YouTube. “Maybe they’re going to do a little polishing and work on profitability first.” The new structure could make it easier for Google Inc. to sell off some of its unrelated businesses, or buy new ones, analysts said. Page has suggested previously that he is a fan of Warren Buffett, the famed financier and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett’s conglomerate owns more than 80 subsidiary companies and lets each operate with substantial independence. Google said its chief financial officer, Ruth Porat, will hold the same title for both Google and Alphabet. Once the reorganization is complete, the company says its two existing classes of publicly traded stock will continue to trade on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker symbols “GOOG” and “GOOGL.” (ap)

His name may not ring a bell, but Google’s new CEO Sundar Pichai has worked on some of the company’s best-known products -- from the Chrome browser to the Android mobile software. Pichai, 43, was named chief executive officer of the Internet titan Monday, as Google unveiled a new corporate structure creating an umbrella company dubbed Alphabet. He will oversee the biggest company under that umbrella, which will still be called Google and will continue to include some of its household products, including its search engine, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and the Android system. Alphabet will be run by Google chief Larry Page, who showered praise upon Pichai, senior vice president of products. “I feel very fortunate to have someone as talented as he is to run the slightly slimmed down Google and this frees up time for me to continue to scale our aspirations,” according to Page in a blog post. Page said he was impressed with his “progress and dedication to the company” and promised to continue to groom Pichai, who has been at Google since 2004. “I have been spending quite a bit of time with Sundar, helping him and the company in any way I can, and I will of course continue to do that.” In his role as SVP of products, Pichai oversees management, engineering and research for Google’s products and platforms, according to Google’s filing at the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Before that, he was SVP of Google Android, Chrome and Apps, working on consumer products “used by millions of people,” the filing said. Originally from Tamil Nadu state in southeast India, Pichai received a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He also has a Master of Science from Stanford University and a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Regional bylaw on smoke-free area also applies to travelers DENPASAR - Foreign travelers are not exempt from Regional Bylaw No.10/2011 on Smoke-free Areas. Head of the Bali Municipal Police, Made Sukadana, said that they have caught at least 15 foreign travelers in violation of the Regional Bylaw at Ngurah Rai International Airport. “Most of the foreign travelers were from Australia and were caught smoking outside of the designated smoking area. Although they do not know about the regional bylaw on smoke-free areas, we do not care. When peoplel are found to be in violation, we take action,” he said in Denpasar, Monday (Aug. 10). Sukadana added that foreign travelers are generally more disciplined. When told that they were in violation of existing regulations, they quickly admitted their guilt. The police are continuing to coordinate with the airport authorities in the enforcement of the Regional Bylaw on smoke-free areas there. The Bali Municipal Police also plan to enforce the regulation at state-owned hospitals in the counties and municipalities. “We have been conducted enforcement at Sanglah Hospital twice. Later, we will target the county and municipal hospitals and create scheduled enforcement there. We are especially targeting hospitals because smoking is detrimental to health” he explained. Sukadana added that his party will gradually target schools. “Later on, we will charge misdemeanor and conduct on the spot trials,” he said. Based on Article 18 of the Regional Bylaw on Smokefree Area, offenders will be subject to 3-month imprisonment or a fine of IDR 50,000. BUENOS AIRES - Argentina’s presidential race was wide open on Monday and likely to be settled in a run-off vote after primaries indicated ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli did not have enough support to win outright in the first round. COLOMBO - The exhumation of the remains of a star rugby player whose death is now the target of a murder investigation has cast a shadow over former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s comeback bid at Sri Lanka’s general election next week. Rajapaksa, 69, has denied allegations by the government that Wasim Thajudeen was tortured to death in May 2012 by members of his security team and did not die in a car crash as reported at the time. “There are no bloodstains on our hands,” the two-term president said after police last week obtained a court order to exhume Thajudeen’s body on suspicion that he had been murdered. Rajapaksa, who has set his sights on becoming Sri Lanka’s next prime minister, said the investigation was timed to coincide with the Aug. 17 elections. He demanded an independent inquiry. Mexico governor to be questioned in journalist killing

MEXICO CITY — Mexico City investigators will travel to the Gulf coast state of Veracruz to question its governor about the killing of a photojournalist, the mayor of the Mexican capital said Monday.

Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said all lines of investigation remain open in the case, including possible political motives, and the investigative team will go to Veracruz on Tuesday.

Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte has told local media that he has no knowledge of the incident, which occurred on July 31 in a Mexico City apartment where four women were also slain.

Photographer Ruben Espinosa had fled Veracruz recently, saying he feared for his safety due to his work covering protests. Thirteen journalists have been killed in the state of Ve-

South Korean shares fell 0.82 percent after disappointing earnings, with the benchmark KOSPI index ending down 16.52 points at 1,986.65. But Shanghai had added 0.83 percent in mid-afternoon trade while Hong Kong was up 0.71 percent. China on Tuesday announced a sharply lower daily reference rate for the yuan against the US dollar, saying it was part of moves to make its exchange rate regime more market-oriented. since the yuan was unpegged from the greenback in 2005 -- comes as speculation mounts China is preparing to widen its currency trading band for the first time since March 2014. China Eastern Airlines lost 12.7 percent to HK$5.70. News of China’s move sent ripples through Asia’s currency markets, pushing the Australian dollar -- often seen as a proxy for the yuan -- down 1.23 percent to 73.22 US cents. SINGAPORE - Singapore on Tuesday narrowed its full-year economic growth forecast after the trade-reliant economy contracted in the second quarter owing to weakened global demand. The full-year growth forecast was trimmed to 2.0-2.5 percent this year from 2.0-4.0 percent previously after a 4.0 percent quarteron-quarter contraction in April to June, the trade ministry said in a statement based on final data for the quarter. The second quarter contraction reversed growth of 4.1 percent in the previous three months, the ministry said. “Several key downside risks in the external economic environment remain,” it said in the statement. “The global economy performed weaker than expected in the first half of 2015. For the rest of the year, global growth is expected to pick up gradually, although the pace of growth is likely to be uneven across economies.” It added that “growth in some labour-intensive sectors such as

food services may be weighed down by labour constraints.” The construction industry grew 2.9 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis, compared with 4.2 percent growth in January-March. The accommodation and food services sector meanwhile shrank 1.4 percent from the previous quarter, following a 6.5 percent dip in the first three months of the year. Sectors such as construction and hospitality are under pressure owing to tighter government rules for foreign labour aimed at placating public anger over a surge in immigration, analysts have said. The large presence of overseas workers has become a hot-button political issue in the island nation, with widespread expectations a general election will be called in September. Greece closes in on bailout deal possibly within the day

ATHENS — Greece only has a few details to iron out with international creditors before concluding a bailout agreement, officials said Tuesday, raising hopes that the cash-strapped country could be ready to finalize a deal within the day. Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos sounded upbeat about the prospects of an imminent deal that would prevent the country’s default later this month and secure its future in the euro. “I think we are very close. Two or three very small details remain,” he said as he emerged Tuesday morning from all-night talks with negotiators representing Greece’s creditors at a central Athens hotel. He did not elaborate further on the outstanding details. Similarly optimistic remarks came from government aide Theodoros Mihopoulos, who said on

Twitter that the negotiation had been completed and that “some details remain.” Greece’s government is hoping to push the new 85 billion-euro ($93 billion) three-year agreement through parliament this week, ahead of an expected meeting between eurozone finance ministers on Friday. A key test will be the reaction of Greece’s creditor countries. Germany, the largest single contributor to Greece’s two previous bailouts, has stressed the importance of being thorough in the complicated negotiations. Police arrest 4 suspected tiger poachers BANDA ACEH — Indonesia police have arrested four suspected poachers of a Sumatran tiger, an endangered species. The four were captured a village in Aceh province’s Tamiang district on Saturday, three days after they were believed to have killed a four-year-old tiger. Lt. Col. Mirwazi of the Aceh police said late Monday that three of them were hunters while the other acted as the seller. Police confiscated the tiger’s hide and bones from the suspects. He said the poachers used a deer trap to capture the tiger, so that its skin was not damaged. Mirwazi said the suspects offered to sell the skin for 10 million rupiah (approximately $800) to police officers who disguised themselves as buyers after receiving tips from villagers about the poaching. He said the four could be charged with violating a 1999 law on protection of natural resources, which carries a maximum five-year jail term. Sumatran tigers, distinguished by heavy black stripes on their orange coats, are the most critically endangered tiger subspecies. About 400 remain, down from 1,000 in the 1970s, because of forest destruction and poaching. (ap)

JAKARTA - An Israeli who was only granted a visa at the 11th hour to compete in the world badminton championships in Muslim-majority Indonesia blamed the immigration saga for his early departure from the tournament on Tuesday. Misha Zilberman, who represented Israel at the London 2012 Olympics, was defeated by Taiwan’s Hsu Jen-hao 21-14, 21-14 in his opening round match in Jakarta, ending his campaign. The 26-year-old shuttler had initially been refused permission to enter Indonesia and was stuck in Singapore, a short flight from Jakarta, in the run-up to the tournament. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, and the Jewish state do not have formal diplomatic ties and it is difficult for Israelis to visit the Southeast Asian nation. But he was granted a visa at the last minute after the Badminton World Federation directly intervened on his behalf. The federation confirmed with AFP its secretary general Thomas Lund travelled to Singapore to assist with his case. The Israeli player did not speak to media following his firstround loss, with the badminton federation citing security concerns for his absence. But in an interview with the federation, he blamed the fracas around his visa for his poor showing, saying the whole experience had not been easy after a year of careful preparation for the championships. “I am very disappointed that I didn’t show even 50 per cent of what I could because I didn’t practise for the last five days or hit any shuttles,” he said. “I thought I could play better... more close to him. Indonesia raises cattle imports as beef prices soar

JAKARTA - Indonesia will issue permits to import another 50,000 cattle, the government said, after beef prices soared and butchers went on strike following a decision to dramatically reduce shipments from Australia. Chief Economics Minister Sofyan Djalil announced the increase late Monday, although he did not say over what period the cattle would be imported. “I have given consent for the state logistics agency to import 50,000 live cattle,” he told reporters, adding it was a “short-term” measure. He did not say where they would come from, but much of Indonesia’s beef is shipped from Australia. Jakarta announced last month that the quota for cattle imports from Australia in the third quarter, from July to September, would be set at 50,000, an 80 percent reduction from the previous three months.

The move came as Indonesia seeks to achieve self-sufficiency in its beef supplies but it shocked Australian cattle producers, as Indonesia is their biggest market for live exports, and sparked concerns that recent diplomatic tensions were affecting trade. But following the decision, there was a sharp increase in the cost of beef in Indonesia, with prices as high as 130,000 rupiah ($10) a kilogram in some areas. SYDNEY — A 91-year-old retired surgeon has been charged with importing cocaine hidden in soap into Australia, prompting police to warn travelers to beware they are not tricked into becoming drug mules. Victor Twartz, of Sydney, was released on bail when he appeared in Sydney’s Downing Center Local Court charged with importing a commercial quantity of cocaine last month. He did not enter a plea and will appear in court next on Oct. 6. The retired oral surgeon faces a potential life prison sentence if he is convicted of importing 4.5 kilograms (10 pounds) of the drug into Sydney Airport on a July 8 flight

from New Delhi. A search of Twartz’s luggage found 27 packages of soap that tested positive for cocaine, police said. Police say it appears that Twartz was scammed by a group of people he had befriended online before his trip. Australian Federal Police organized crime commander David Stewart declined to say whether Twartz had been promised anything by the group, but said he had been in contact with them over several months. FERGUSON, Missouri — Police arrested nearly two dozen people in the Missouri city of Ferguson during a fourth consecutive night of demonstrations marking the anniversary of the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. The gathering that stretched into early Tuesday morning came a day after a protest that was interrupted by gunfire and a police shooting that left an 18-year-old critically injured. The violence set the St. Louis suburb on edge and had protest leaders worried about whether tensions would escalate. St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger declared a state of emergency, which authorized county Police Chief Jon Belmar to take control of police emergency management in and around Ferguson. By early Monday evening, hundreds of people had gathered again along West Florissant Avenue, the thoroughfare that was the site of massive protests and rioting after Brown was fatally shot last year

in a confrontation with a Ferguson police officer. The protesters chanted, beat drums and carried signs. When some in the group moved into a traffic lane, officers in riot gear forced people out of the street. Some demonstrators threw water bottles and other debris at officers. Belmar told The Associated Press: “They’re not going to take the street tonight. That’s not going to happen.” Ferguson resident Hershel Myers Jr., 46, criticized the police response as aggressive and unnecessary. A military veteran, he added, “It’s wrong for me to have to go overseas and fight with ‘Army’ across my chest, but we can’t fight on our own street where I live.” By 1 a.m., the crowd and police presence along West Florissant had been begun to diminish. BURBANK, California — Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush will step up his criticism of Hillary Rodham Clinton and her tenure as secretary of state on Tuesday, arguing in a speech on foreign policy the U.S. Democratic front-runner shares in the mistakes that he says led to the rise of the Islamic State group. The former Florida governor will also call for a renewed sense of U.S. leadership in the Middle East, which he says is needed to defeat the militant group and an ideology that “is, to borrow a phrase, the focus of evil in the modern world.” “The threat of global jihad, and of the Islamic State in particular, requires all the strength, unity and confidence that only American leadership can provide,” Bush will say, according to excerpts of his remarks as prepared for delivery. American troops left Iraq in December 2011 as required under a 2008 security agreement worked out by former President George W. Bush. He churned through the water, his body as ripped and fit as ever, producing times that haven’t been seen since the days of the high-tech bodysuits. When rival swimmer Chad le Clos trash-talked from afar, it only made Phelps go faster. “I did what I came here to do,” he said Monday. Phelps was barred from the world championships after his second drunkendriving arrest, so he turned the national championships into his biggest meet of the year. Never mind that this was essentially a junior-varsity event, largely made up of promising youngsters, a few late bloomers and a smattering of big-name swimmers who failed to qualify for worlds. Hardly the sort of competition that Phelps is used to facing, but he wasn’t concerned about the guy in the next lane. His attention was focused on Kazan, Russia — specifically, the winning times at worlds in the 100-meter butterfly, the 200 fly, and the 200 individual medley. Phelps was determined to beat them all, to prove to everyone he was the real champion. Mission accomplished. Phelps’ times in the fly harkened back to 2009, when rubberized suits made a mockery of the clock. His performance in the 200 IM was faster than anyone has gone since he won gold at the 2012 Olympics. “I prepared myself for the best and the worst,” he said. “I thought that was something that really made an impact on me being so relaxed. I was ready for anything. That’s something I got back to, something I haven’t done in a while.” After winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, knocking off Mark Spitz’s iconic Olympic record, Phelps had largely accomplished what he wanted to do in the sport by age 23. His training fell off. There was that notorious tabloid picture

of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe. And when he failed to even win a medal in his first event at London, it looked as though his time had passed. Being Michael Phelps, he bounced back to capture four golds and two silvers at the 2012 Games, making him the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. He retired after his last event in London, with 18 golds, 22 medals overall, and supposedly no desire to keep swimming into his 30s. Well, here he is, about six weeks removed from his 30th birthday, on top of the game again. His retirement barely lasted a year. His comeback has hardly been smooth, though. When he was arrested again for DUI last September, Phelps decided to take a long, hard look at himself. He went through six weeks of inpatient therapy, which helped him deal with everything from family dynamics (his parents divorced when he was a child, resulting in a strained relationship with his father) to issues with alcohol. Phelps vowed not to drink at least through the Rio Games and made a commitment to get in the best shape of his life. That work has clearly paid off. He’s more muscular, more defined. His body didn’t hurt nearly as much as he thought it would after back-to-back-to-back races, though he requires more sleep than he did in his younger days. “My body doesn’t feel tired; I’m just sleepy,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing, just staying on top of my sleep.” By the end of the month, he’ll move from his beloved Baltimore to the Phoenix area to remain with longtime coach Bob Bowman, who is taking over at Arizona State. They have one of the longest, most successful partnerships in sports, and Phelps’ trust in his coach never wavers. (ap)

Arsenal still 1,2 players short of reaching former heights

MANCHESTER, England — The FA Cup. The Community Shield. The Asia Trophy. The Emirates Cup. Arsenal has built up quite the collection of trophies over the last few months. But the silverware the club really wants — the Premier League and the Champions League — look as far away as ever on the evidence of a season opener that exposed the biggest flaws in Arsene Wenger’s teams of recent years. All the optimism surrounding Arsenal — after a strong finish to last season and good set of preseason results — and talk of an assault at the Premier League title this campaign were punctured by a 2-0 home loss to West Ham featuring wasted chances and flaky defending. It’s a familiar story for Arsenal fans. The arrival from Chelsea of Petr Cech, an authoritative goalkeeper with a vast medal collection and a winner’s mentality, was heralded by many as a breakthrough signing. One that could turn Arsenal from pretenders to genuine contenders. Forgetting Cech’s mistakes against West Ham, surely it was a striker and a leader at either center back or in central midfield that Arsenal really needed to buy this summer? Olivier Giroud’s scoring record in his three seasons at Arsenal — 11 league goals in 2012-13, 16 in 2013-14, and 14 in 2014-15 — is decent but surely not good enough to build an attack around. As it stands, he’s the only out-and-out senior striker at Wenger’s disposal, with his other options being wide players in Alexis S a n chez, Theo

Walcott and Danny Welbeck. Giroud has one goal in his last 11 matches for Arsenal, and had another of those games against West Ham that makes you wonder what would happen if Arsenal had a reliable, world-class striker leading the line. “Giroud alone as a striker there — you can’t win the league,” former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry said ahead of the season. “You need another type of striker.” Wenger also clearly thinks Francis Coquelin is the answer in central midfield. It remains to be seen whether this unheralded Frenchman can maintain his impressive form from the second half to the last season, when he was thrust into the team as a last resort after being on loan in England’s third tier. Manchester United’s new-look team may take time to gel after another offseason of heavy spending by Louis van Gaal, and still have to resolve its own striker shortage and uncertainty over the future of goalkeeper David De Gea. An aging Man City is restructuring to bring to revitalize its attack, and Liverpool also is in transition. Now is the time for Wenger to go for it and take the club to the next level — the top level. They have the money, even though Wenger has played down a claim by an Arsenal director, Lord Harris, that the club has 200 million pounds ($310 million) in the bank. Speculation that Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is on Wenger’s radar won’t go away but the French coach seems to be veering toward going with what he’s got up front. “I think we have to depend less on one guy who can score. We need to develop the collective aspect,” Wenger has said, urging his midfield to weigh in with more goals. Wenger also believes there is a shortage of strikers around because modern-day European football is focusing on producing “technical midfielders” instead. Arsenal has plenty of them. Most neutrals will be happy for Wenger to win the Premier League title again, for the first time since 2004, and go deep in the Champions League simply as a reward for all the eye-catching football his teams have played down the years. Cech should be a success — his two errors against West Ham are likely to be exceptions rather than the rule, as he is too good — but a goalkeeper wasn’t a pressing concern. Colombia international David Ospina did a fine job when brought in midway through last season. A striker would have made a bigger difference. Wenger splashed out nearly 80 million pounds ($124 million) on Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez over the last two summers, giving Arsenal a surfeit of attacking midfielders. The deal will continue to make all 380 Premier League matches each season available to fans on the NBC Sports Group’s platforms, including NBC, NBCSN, USA Network, and Telemundo. Financial terms of the extension were not announced. “We are excited to continue our tremendous partnership with the Premier League, and we look forward to presenting the world’s finest soccer league to Americans for many years to come,” said NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus. “As sports fans, there’s nothing better than waking up on a weekend morning to live and relevant events.” NBC is in the final season of a three-year, $250 million deal with the Premier League.
