‘Secret Life of Pets’ Debuts to Massive $103.2 Million

LOS ANGELES - “The Secret Life of Pets” dominated the weekend box office, racking up a massive $103.2 million and launching the first new franchise of the summer.

Its success is a feather in the cap for Illumination chief Chris Meledandri, confirming his status among the ranks of animation giants. The family film, which explores what dogs, cats and other animal companions do while their owners are busy at work, cost an economical $75 million to produce, roughly half of what most studios spend making animated movies. Universal is backing the picture, which launched across 4,370 locations. “Illumination just has a way of creating ‘want to see’ movies,” said Nick Carpou, Universal’s domestic distribution chief. “They make movies that resonate with audiences.” And ones that spawn toylines. The cuddly creatures that populate “Pets” seem tailor made to sell stuffed animals and t-shirts, creating a financial windfall for the studio. The film deftly exploited dog and cat obsessed moviegoers to appeal to both parents and children. One of the causes of this gap is that local population is bound to customary activities. “To that end, all the migrants should be involved in the existing activities, so that there is no difference between the locals and migrants in terms of customary work. are not ready to do so, they will be back again,” he said. In addition to protection against the region, added Asmara, the customary village in particular also needs to make strengthening internally. It is based on consideration that the presence of migrants is definitely going to cause a cultural shift if Balinese people are not strong. On that account, the understanding on the Balinese customs, culture and traditions inspired by Hinduism becomes very important. “Maintaining tradition and performing ceremony are the charms and customary and cultural defense remaining to only exist in this world. Protection of the region alone is not enough without any idealistic understanding of the community,” said this politician of Democrat Party. Asmara added that the strengthening can be conducted by opening and encouraging ashram education. At the ashram, the young generation in particular is given the understanding so that they are more familiar with customs and culture. When having known it well, they will love so that they are ultimately not easily influenced by external cultures. “If they do not know anything and then get external culture and consider it nicer, they will definitely turn. However, if they have an understanding about the superiority of our culture and customs, it will result in a stronger idealism in the next generation, the young people of Bali,” he said. (kmb32)

After being preoccupied with homecoming traffic, police officers are now made alert by backflow. For instance, it was seen in the eastern entrance of Bali namely Padangbai Harbor, where the backflow started to look crowded since day one after the Eid holiday up to Sunday afternoon (Jul. 10). Astronomers spy giant planet, three stars in odd celestial ballet

CAPE CANAVERAL - Astronomers have discovered a planet unlike any other ever found, one that loops widely around one star that is locked in a gravitational embrace with two others in a triple-star system, creating a curious celestial ballet. The findings, published on Thursday in the journal Science, challenge current notions about what makes a planetary system viable. With three stars in the system, the massive planet would experience triple sunrises and triple sunsets during one season and all daylight in another. Since the planet’s orbit is very long, each season lasts for hundreds of years. “Depending on which season you were born in, you may never know what nighttime is like,” lead researcher Kevin Wagner of the University of Arizona said. The planet, called HD 131399Ab, is about four times bigger than Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and is orbiting in a three-star system located about 340 light-years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus. Scientists are not sure how HD 131399Ab came to exist. It orbits its parent star about twice as far as Pluto circles the sun, needing 550 years to complete a single orbit. Astronomers have previously discovered planets in multi-star systems, but never one that circles a parent star with such a wide berth. It also is one of the few extrasolar planets - those outside our solar system - to be directly imaged by telescope. The planet’s orbit is akin to the

distance more typically seen when a star orbits another star, not a planet orbiting a star. “This is the first planet that we’ve found with an orbit that is comparable to that of the stars,” Wagner said. If HD 131399Ab’s orbit was just a bit wider, computer simulations show it could be gravitationally elbowed out of the system by the pair of smaller stars that orbit each other and the main star, which is about 80 percent bigger than the sun. Though the planet is relatively young, around 16 million years old compared to the 4.5-billionyear-old Earth, it likely has had an eventful life. Scientists suspect it may have started off in a much closer orbit around two parent stars before it was gravitationally bounced to its extreme distance. Scientists plan additional observations to determine if the planet’s orbit is actually stable. “It is not clear how this planet ended up on its wide orbit in this extreme system ... but it shows there is more variety out there than many would have deemed possible,” Wagner said. The planet was detected using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in northern Chile. (rtr)

SEVILLE - An airplane powered solely by energy from the sun took off from southern Spain early on Monday on the penultimate leg of the first ever fuel-free round-the-world flight. The single-seat Solar Impulse 2 lifted off from Seville at 0420 GMT en route for Cairo, a trip expected to take 50 hours and 30 minutes. The plane has more than 17,0000 solar cells built in to its wings and travels at a cruising speed of around 70 km per hour (43 mph). On its journey, which began in Abu Dhabi and is due to end there, it has been piloted in turns by Swiss aviators Andre Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard. Borschberg is taking this run, the 16th leg, over the Mediterranean Sea, crossing through the airspace of Tunisia, Algeria, Malta, Italy and Greece before ending in Egypt. (rtr)

Both organic and inorganic waste like plastic is found to pile up in the forest. Allegedly, the rubbish was deliberately dumped into the forest area by unscrupulous residents as seen from the condition of waste collected in plastic bags. Piles of the rubbish in the forest indirectly indicate that the dumping of rubbish in the forest seems to have lasted for long enough time. Other than at Suter, similar condition is also seen in the forest area on the outskirts heading for Manikliyu village. Likewise, the

forest area along the main road section of Penelokan-Singaraja is inseparable from the siege of rubbish. When asked for his confirmation on Sunday (Jul. 10), the Section Head of Regional Conservation at the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Sulistyo Widodo, said that the large amount of rubbish accumulating in the forest area of Kintamani is not solely the responsibility of the BKSDA. Considering the region belongs to a tourism area, the issue should become a joint responsibility of all parties. According to him, the public awareness of not throwing rubbish into the forest is the main key to the issues.

“The BKSDA alone is unable to take care of the rubbish at the location. Hopefully, all parties can take part,” he explained. Sulistyo also added that the problem of rubbish in the forest area does not only occur in Kintamani. Almost all regions experience similar problem. To maintain forest area so that it remains clean of trash, he admitted to have repeatedly called on people not to throw rubbish in the forest area any time. “We have disseminated about this awareness every meeting so that people can also maintain the sanitation of the forest area. Crowded backflow, five migrants repatriated

NEGARA - Backflow on day two after the Eid at Gilimanuk started to look crowded from Saturday night (Jul. 9) to Sunday (Jul. 10). The increase of security officers and identity checks to migrants was intensified. Moreover, the Jembrana Population and Registry Office already repatriated five migrants without identity. The five migrants were recorded to have been repatriated starting from day two after the Eid or Thursday (Jul. 7) to day three after the Eid or Sunday (Jul. 10). The Head of the Jembrana Population and Registry Office, I Ketut Wiaspada, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday afternoon justified if his agency already repatriated five migrants within the past four days. He said that when entering Bali namely the Gilimanuk identity checkpoint, the migrants did not present their identity card to the officers. He said that the migrants argued with various reasons. One admitted to only accompany his brother, another claimed to be a project worker while the others claimed as students. However, his agency tried to take assertive action. Among the five migrants including Kapi Arianto from Solo, Central Java, with the purpose of visiting his brother in Denpasar was repatriated on Thursday (Jul. 7). Secondly, Helmi from Banyuwangi, East Java, admitting to be a student and wishing to go to Denpasar was repatriated on Friday (Jul. 8). Thirdly, Diki Wahyudi from Banyuwangi, East Java claiming to drive his brother to Denpasar was repatriated on the same day. In the meantime, the fourth migrant, Rasimin from Sidoarjo, East Java, claiming to be project worker in Tabanan was repatriated on Saturday (Jul. 9). On Sunday (Jul. 10), the officers repatriated a migrant named Andi Purwanto from Jember, East Java, with the purpose to be project worker in Denpasar. So far, these problems have yet been resolved so that it is often complained by travelers. “Many complaints have been delivered by travelers. It is very unfortunate, whereas Ubud has a great potential,” said the Chairman of LPM Ubud. The most vital issue is the concept of the Ubud tourism development itself. SINGAPORE - A rare bank robbery in Singapore has sparked a social media debate on whether the country’s low crime rates made authorities and society in general too complacent, while Thai authorities said on Monday they had detained the suspected thief. A man stole S$30,000 ($22,300) from a Standard Chartered branch last Thursday, having slipped the teller a note saying he was armed, a source with knowledge of the matter said. The teller pressed a silent alarm button and police arrived within minutes, but it was too late, said the source, who declined to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media. Standard Chartered said the bank has taken “immediate actions to further enhance” security. It declined to comment on the details of the robbery. SYDNEY - Australia declared on Monday the AIDS epidemic is no longer a public health issue there, a month after the United Nations adopted an ambitious target to eliminate the threat globally by 2030. The government-backed Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) and top scientists said the number of people being diagnosed with AIDS in Australia was now so small it was no longer reported. AIDS cases in Australia peaked in 1994, at 953 cases, according to the Kirby Institute for infection and immunity in society. Since then, following the introduction of antiretroviral treatment, that prevent AIDS developing in people who are infected with the HIV virus, and awareness campaigns, AIDS diagnoses have declined sharply. “Australia is incredibly fortunate to be in the position and its because of farsighted government policy,” said Darryl O’Donnell, chief executive AFAO. “We had community organisations of gay men, sex workers and drug users doing outreach campaigns that were extraordinarily effective,” O’Donnell said. A spokeswoman for the Federal Department of Health said while it was tremendous that AIDS was “not the automatic death sentence that it once was”, approximately 1,100 cases of HIV are detected each year. “We must not let down our guard.” Worldwide there are 36.7 million people living with HIV, according to the World Health Organisation, with 180,000 people dying from AIDS-related illness in the Asia-Pacific region last year. The United Nations agreed a new declaration on ending the AIDS epidemic at a meeting in New York last month. The UNAIDS Fast-Track approach to ending the AIDS epidemic has a set of time-bound targets, including reducing the number of people newly infected with HIV from 2.1 million in 2015 to fewer than 500,000 in 2020, reducing the number of people dying from AIDS-related illnesses from 1.1 million in 2015 to fewer than 500,000 in 2020 and eliminating HIV-related discrimination. BOGOR - A total of 23,607 visitors, including 74 foreigners, visited Bogor Botanical Garden, here, Saturday. “We have predicted that there would be a significant increase in the number of visitors in the weekend, before the post-fasting Lebaran or Eid El Fitr Islamic Holiday ends,” Upun Panipar of the botanical garden said here, Sunday. On the Lebaran day (July 6), 4,515 domestic visitors and 90 foreign tourists visited the garden. On Thursday (July 7), the garden received 12,725 domestic and 77 foreign visitors; and on Friday, there were 11,945 domestic and 82 foreign visitors. The Bogor Botanical Garden is a home to thousands of flora, including several trees which are hundreds of years old. He reported the abduction happened at around 1200 hours local time when his ship with the Indonesian crew on board was approached by a speed boat with five people aboard wielding rifles.

Immediately three of the crew of his boat were taken by the armed group suspected to be connected with the Abu Sayyaf group of the Philippines, he said. The four other crew left consisting of one Indonesian citizen and three Philippine citizens from Bajau Palauh tribe were released together the ship with registration number LD113/5/F which has now arrived at Lahad Datu port. Chia Tong Lim who lives in Kampung Cina, Lorong Satu, Pekan Kunak, Sabah, said the names of the abducted Indonesian citizens are Lorence Koten (34), Teodorus Kopong (42), and Emanuel (40). The Indonesian consulate general in Kinabalu, Sabah, said in its text message sent through its immigration staff, Nasriansyah, confirmed the incident on Sunday. Nasriansyah said the case is currently being tackled by the foreign ministry in cooperation with the governments of Malaysia and the Philippines.(ant)

British PM candidate Leadsom apologies to rival over motherhood row

LONDON - Andrea Leadsom, the junior minister seeking to become Britain’s next prime minister, apologised to her childless rival over remarks which suggested she had a greater stake in the country’s future because she was a mother. Leadsom’s comments, published in a newspaper interview on Saturday, caused an uproar and led to harsh criticism from supporters of Theresa May, the interior minister who is the favourite to replace David Cameron. “I’ve already said to Theresa how very sorry I am for any hurt caused and how that article said completely the opposite of what I said and believe,” Leadsom told the Daily Telegraph newspaper. Leadsom was little known nationally before becoming a prominent figure in the campaign for Britain to leave the European Union but remains an outsider to succeed Cameron who said he would step down after Britons voted to leave the bloc on June 23. Micah X. Johnson improvised instead and used “shoot-and-move” tactics to gun down the officers during a demonstration on Thursday evening, Dallas Police Chief David Brown told CNN. I hope not, because I think in sport in general it’s just not the done thing,” he said. “If I went to a football game and the other team won, I would never boo the other team because

The majority of the British were really, really supportive of me this weekend,” he said. “I don’t want to catch on to those 15, 20 people or more that dislike me. Much more I should mention how much I appreciate the majority of the people who were supporting me. That’s pretty awesome to see coming to here. “It just shows the racing spirit they have here. Sp rt Losing to Ronaldo again sucks, says Griezmann PARIS - Losing a final to Cristiano Ronaldo has become an unfortunate habit for Antoine Griezmann and he is not happy about it. The France forward missed a penalty for Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final in May and his team went on to lose on penalties to city rivals Real with Ronaldo sealing the shootout win. “I’ve just lost my second final in just over a month and it sucks,” Griezmann told reporters after Les Bleus lost 1-0 in extratime to Ronaldo’s Portugal in the European Championship final on Sunday. Griezmann’s usual boyish looks were on display as ever but not the smile that normally goes with them when he collected his trophy for the top scorer in the tournament. The speedy 25-year-old netted six goals in the finals -- more than any player at one European Championship since Michel Platini hit nine in France’s 1984-winning campaign on home soil. “We came close, really close,” said Griezmann, who has reached a totally new dimension this season,

prompting Atletico coach Diego Simeone to say his disciplined and hard-working forward was among the top three players in the world. “Portugal did not create many chances but they were smart,” he added. “It’s frustrating. I’m proud of our group and of what we have achieved but this was simply not our night.” France coach Didier Deschamps, who helped Griezmann shine at the tournament by moving him closer to Olivier Giroud up front, offered sympathy. “Antoine is a great player and we owe him a lot,” Deschamps said. “Maybe he was not clinical or fresh enough tonight but I can’t reproach him and there will be better days for him, I’m sure”.(rtr)

France loses Euro 2016, but can claim security victory PARIS — France has lost the Euro 2016 soccer championship but can claim victory on another front — making it safely through the monthlong tournament that drew fans from all over Europe while in a state of emergency and on high alert for extremist attacks.
