Scott Disick, ex-boyfriend of Kourtney Kardashian, received 118 “likes” for praising teethwhitening strips, according to letters the FTC sent to the ce-

lebrities in March. Reuters obtained copies of the letters after filing a Freedom of Information Act request with the government. The letters prodded the stars to disclose when they are paid to compliment products on Instagram or other social media. Actresses Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario and Ashley Benson, stars of the hit teen show “Pretty Little Liars,” also received FTC letters for praising clothing such as pineapple-print leggings, potato chips and facial scrub. Letters went to more than 35 celebrities and more than 40 companies, including Adidas, Cabela’s, Chanel USA, Johnson & Johnson, Dunkin Brands Group, Hasbro, Inc and Yves Saint Laurent North America. None of the celebrities or companies contacted by Reuters for this story had any comment. The FTC did not accuse the celebrities IBP/net of accepting money or products in exchange for the Instagram boosts but it noted in the letters, which were largely similar, that truth-inadvertising laws mandate any payments must to be disclosed. ‘King Arthur’ director says David Beckham ‘great on screen’

LONDON - David Beckham has received some scathing reviews in the British press for his cameo in the film “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”, but director Guy Ritchie has given the former soccer star the thumbs up for his performance. “I love him and I think he’s great on screen. I find him very talented,” Ritchie told Reuters at the film’s European premiere, when asked if Beckham had the potential to be as good at acting as at soccer. JAKARTA - Hundreds of supporters of Jakarta’s Christian governor sang patriotic songs outside the Indonesian capital’s City Hall on Wednesday to protest his imprisonment for blasphemy after a trial that drew concerns over rising religious intolerance. Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is appealing his harsher-thanexpected two-year jail sentence after being found guilty of insulting the Koran in the Muslim-majority country. Purnama, the first ethnic Chinese and Christian leader to be elected as Jakarta’s governor, was immediately detained, on the judge’s orders, at the end of the trial on Tuesday. While he was held in a police detention facility on Jakarta’s outskirts, Purnama’s supporters

dressed in the national colours of red and white to gather at his office in a show of solidarity at the Dutch colonial-style City Hall. The emotions unleashed by the case have sent shudders through Indonesia - a secular state that has religious freedom and diversity enshrined in the constitution, though 85 percent of its people are Muslim. A Hindu spiritual leader from the holiday island of Bali, I Gusti Ngurah Harta, said Purnama’s guilty verdict meant minorities could be

disadvantaged before the law in the future. “It means that before the law, minorities will be increasingly oppressed because judges can’t do much in the face of the pressures they face,” he said. Rights groups have condemned the verdict. They fear Islamist hardliners are in the ascendancy in a country where most Muslims practise a moderate form of Islam and is home to sizeable communities of Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and people who adhere to traditional beliefs. Purnama, who is an ally of President Joko Widodo, was put on trial late last year over allegations that he had insulted the Koran

when he said political rivals were deceiving people by using a verse in from the Islamic holy book to say Muslims should not be led by a non-Muslim. Islamist groups drew hundreds of thousands of protesters onto the street, calling for him to be sacked and jailed, scuppering his chances at re-election. Though he remains popular for his record of getting things done, Purnama lost April’s divisive election to a Muslim rival who will take office in October. Construction of cruise ship terminal and marina at Benoa

Denpasar govt recommendation pending

MANGUPURA - The plan to build a cruise ship terminal and marina at Benoa Harbor is currently being re-viewed as the Municipality of Denpasar has yet to issue a recommendation for a permit.

Pelindo III, as the operator of Benoa Harbor, is planning several building development projects. However, none of these can go forward prior to the Ministry of Transportation issuing a Master Plan for the harbor (RIP in Indonesian). “The harbor master plan is to serve as a guide for the development of the harbor for the short, mid and long term. The latest request is currently still waiting for recommendations for its permits. The Province has already given the go – ahead but the Mayor of Denpasar has not not”, said Director of Engineering, IT and Communication of Pelindo III, Husein Latief, on Tuesday (May 9) in Nusa Dua. Latief said that while waiting for permission to go ahead with the project, the development funds are being transferred to Banyuwangi for harbor development. Lombok’s Lembar harbor is also receiving funding of some IDR 1.3 trillion to build new docks in support of the development of tourism there. Currently, the land around the harbor is being prepared and construction of an embankment has already started. Docks for state ships and passenger ships have also been built along some 60 meters. “In 2017 the basin of the harbor will be dredged to make it deeper” added Latief. There are also future plans to build safe and comfortable marina facilities including additional docks for cruise ships and facilities for yachts as well as a place for ships to drop anchor and ship hotels. “Hotels for the ships will be in the marina. So the marina must be equipped with appropriate facilities, including electricity, water, security et cetera. For the development of Benoa, a total of IDR 1.3 billion more of investment funds will be prepared”, he explained. Later, continued Latief, Benoa Harbor area will also have a commercial zone used for cultural shows, souvenir shops and places to rent diving equipment. He asserted that Pelindo III will not build facilities for private interests at Benoa Habrbor. “ We will build for the public – such things as transportation infrastructure and public infrastructure” he concluded. Seaplane tourism in West Buleleng, Waiting for provincial and central govt recommendations

SINGARAJA - The plan to create seaplane tourism in West Buleleng, in areas such as the West Bali Natinal Park (TNBB) and Pemuteran is still pending. Apparently, there is both public approval as wel las the support of those working in tourism and from local fishermen. The plan however is still awaiting permit recommendations from Bali’s provincial government and from the central government. Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, I Nyoman Sutrisna, stated on Tuesday (May 9) that the plan had been discussed with communities in several villages in West Buleleng and that they had all expressed their agreement with the project. Likewise the district government and the Buleleng House of Representatives have also expressed their agreement. “ The public, local leaders and govern-

ment officials and the parliament have agreed to have such tourism implemented here” said Sutrisna. However this tourist attraction can not be developed because according to Law No.23/2014, on marine management, states that the Provincial government has the authority over such matters. Therefore, a recommendation is also required from central government through the Ministry of Transportation. “Presently we are waiting for both the provincial and the central government to issue recommendations for permits” he said. This tourist attraction that has been tested said Sutrisna is a suitable way to try to increase the number of visitors to the area. “ According to information from Denpasar, it will only take visitors 25 minutes and the air-crafts are quite comfortable”, he added. Forensics deals with verifications regarding the death of the patient, whiel the corpse management team deals with handling dead bodies until they are buried or cremated. Every region has its own obligations in terms of caring for their citizens – including post-mordem care. Given that Gilimanuk is included as a national strategic area (KSPN), it is important that such an impression be felt as people arrive”, he explained. Because Gilimanuk is included as a national strategic area, it means that the central government, as well as Provincial and District governments all have a role to play in its development. “We would like to

Their short term plan includes opening the market for agricultural products processed by Tabanan farmers. Currently they are marketing virgin coconut oil (VCO), however Tabanan’s village owned enterprises (BUMDes) can only produce 6 of the 40 tons being demanded by the market. Director of PDDS, I Putu Sugi Darmawan, said on Tuesday (May 9) that in their shortterm business plan for 2017, the PDDS is focusing on product marketing products yielded by Tabanan’s 78 BUMDes, specifically: processed coconut products, processed coffee and snack products. Of the three types of products, the PDDS is now in the process of cooperating in the selling of VCO. Jakarta asks for 40 tons while the demand form Yogyakarta is 2 tons. “Currently, we are negotiating the matter of prices”, said Sugi. ANKARA - Turkey warned the United States on Wednesday that a decision to arm Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State in Syria could end up hurting Washington, and accused its NATO ally of siding with terrorists. The rebuke came a week before President Tayyip Erdogan is due in Washington for his first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, who approved the arms supply to support a campaign to retake the Syrian city of Raqqa from Islamic State. Turkey views the YPG as the Syrian extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought an insurgency in southeast Turkey since 1984 and is considered a terrorist group by the United States, Turkey and Europe. “We want to believe that our allies will prefer to side with us, not with a terrorist organisation,” Erdogan told a news conference in Ankara, saying he would convey Turkey’s stance to Trump next week and at a NATO summit later this month. He said he hoped that recently taken decisions would be changed by the time he visits the United States. The United States regards the YPG as a valuable partner in the fight against Islamic State militants in northern Syria. Washington says that arming the Kurdish forces is necessary to recapturing Raqqa, Islamic State’s de facto capital in Syria and a hub for planning attacks against the West. That argument holds little sway with Ankara, which worries that advances by the YPG in northern Syria could inflame the PKK insurgency on Turkish soil. BUSINESS EU raises euro zone growth forecasts, sees drop in unemployment

BRUSSELS - Euro zone economic growth should grow a bit faster this year than previously believed and the unemployment rate could be the lowest in a decade, the European Commission said on Thursday. It also predicted low inflation, a challenge for the European Central Bank whis is trying to boost it. The 19-country euro zone is expected to expand by 1.7 percent this year and 1.8 percent in 2018, the EU executive said, slightly raising its previous estimate for euro zone growth of 1.6 percent this year, while leaving unchanged the 2018 forecast. The projected growth for 2017, however, remains lower than 2016 when it was 1.8 percent, and further below the 2.0 percent postcrisis high reached in 2015. The Commission’s forecasts, published three times a year, predict all euro zone countries will grow this year and next, with Germany, the bloc’s largest economy, accelerating to 1.9 percent in 2018, and Spain and Portugal expanding much more than previously expected. “Europe is entering its fifth consecutive year of growth,” EU Economics Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said. “It is good news too that the high uncertainty that has characterised the past 12 months may be starting to ease,” he said, noting that far-right nationalism “was defeated,” a reference to far-right candidate Marine Le Pen’s loss at last week’s French presidential elections. In a further sign of a healthier economy, euro zone unemployment is expected to go down to 9.4 percent this year from 10.0 percent in 2016, before falling further in 2018 to 8.9 percent, a bigger drop than previously estimated. If confirmed, the 2018 figure would be the lowest since the beginning of 2009, although the rate of people without jobs will remain well above the average in Italy, Spain, Cyprus and Greece, where is projected at 21.6 percent in 2018. Britain’s growth has however slowed down from 2.2 percent in 2015, and domestic demand is expected to weaken as inflation is projected to reach 2.6 percent this year and next, above Bank of England’s target of 2 percent. Brexit remains one of the main risks for the bloc’s growth in the coming months, the Commission said. The state of public finances in euro zone countries is generally improving, as the Commission expects debts and deficits to go

down as a proportion of the bloc’s gross domestic product (GDP), but problems remain in some countries. Italy’s debt, the bloc’s highest after Greece, is forecast to grow slightly this year to 133.1 percent of GDP from 132.6 percent last year before falling to 132.5 in 2018, the Commission said, reducing the size of the Italian debt from its previous forecast. Italy remains however a potential source of risk, for its weak banks and high unemployment which fuels the rise of eurosceptic parties as elections approach. The country’s growth is also forecast to be the weakest among all 28 EU countries this year and next. France’s growth is gaining speed but the country will have

a deficit higher than previously predicted this year and in 2018, and above the threshold set by EU rules, the commission estimated, a possible reason of conflict with the new French President Emmanuel Macron. France’s deficit will be 3 percent of GDP this year, from 2.9 percent previously forecast, and 3.2 percent in 2018 from the previous forecast of 3.1 percent. EU rules say countries should keep their deficits below 3 percent of GDP. Comey had pushed for more resources for Russia probe before being fired by Trump

WASHINGTON - FBI Director James Comey, days before President Donald Trump fired him, told lawmakers he sought more resources for his agency’s probe into possible collusion between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia to sway the 2016 U.S. election, a congressional source said on Wednesday.

With the Republican president facing a storm of criticism from many Democratic lawmakers and some in his own party, the Trump administration accused Comey of “atrocities” on the job and denied his firing was related to the FBI’s Russia investigation. Trump, who met Russia’s foreign minister at the White House on Wednesday, lashed out at critics, calling Democrats “phony hypocrites,” and defended his decision to abruptly oust Comey on Tuesday from the law enforcement post he held since 2013. In a farewell letter to staff seen by CNN, Comey, who was appointed by Trump’s predecessor, Democratic President Barack Obama, said he had “long believed that a president can fire an FBI director for any reason, or for no reason at all.” Comey added he would not spend time dwelling on Trump’s decision “or the way it was executed.” But Democrats ramped up accusations that Comey’s removal was intended to undermine the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe and demanded an independent investigation into the alleged Russian meddling, with some calling the firing an attempt to cover up wrongdoing related to Russia. A congressional source with knowledge of the matter said Comey told lawmakers within the past few days he had asked the Justice Department to make additional resources available - mainly more staffing - for the Russia probe. Comey informed lawmakers of that request after the Senate Intelligence Committee, conducting its

own investigation, had asked the FBI to speed up its Russia inquiry, the source said. Democrat Dianne Feinstein, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s top Democrat, told reporters she understood Comey was seeking more resources for the FBI investigation. BARCELONA - Valtteri Bottas can add his name to one of Formula One’s longest sequences by following up his breakthrough win in Russia with another triumph when the European season starts in Spain this weekend. The Finn, fresh from his first grand prix victory with champions Mercedes, is the man most likely to become the 11th different winner in a row at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. BARCELONA - Up against a baying Vicente Calderon crowd and a battle-hardened Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid could not produce the same dominant display as in their 3-0 win in the first leg but reached another Champions League final on Wednesday thanks to their experience. Goals from Saul Niguez and an Antoine Griezmann penalty inside 16 minutes gave Atletico tangible hope of pulling off the latest of a sensational set of comebacks in this season’s Champions League but Real could not be intimidated. The 11-times European champions, who were playing in their seventh consecutive semi-final and targetting a 15th final berth, waited for Atletico to run out of steam and Isco delivered a knockout blow before half-time to make it 2-1, putting them 4-2 up on aggregate. “We knew Atleti were going to start well and they had a bit of luck in scoring the two goals, but we knew that if we scored it would kill them,” Cristiano Ronaldo told reporters. “We’re Real Madrid and we showed that we have more experience,” added the prolific Portuguese, whose hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg had given Real a huge advantage in the tie. With EPL title a formality, challenges await for Chelsea The hard work is just about to start for Antonio Conte. Top of the English Premier League since early November, Chelsea can complete its serene march to the title by picking up three points over its next three games, the first of which is at West Bromwich Albion on Friday. With the other two matches being at home to out-ofform Watford and already-relegated Sunderland, it’s surely a formality for the Blues. In public, Conte won’t be thinking further ahead than his team’s trip to The Hawthorns but a coach as thorough and hard-working as the Italian will surely have one eye on the offseason and beyond. Challenges abound. First of all, will Conte want to continue at Chelsea? Weekly stories linking him with Inter Milan, which on Tuesday fired coach Stefano Pioli, might be wide of the mark despite the Italian team’s Chinese owners reportedly offering 12 million euros ($13 million) a year. Yet, his wife, Elisabetta, and young daughter, Vittoria, still live in Italy and Conte said recently that it “is not easy” living away from his family. Leading Chelsea into the Champions League should be enough of a lure for Conte, who has two years left on his contract. However, being back in Europe’s top competition presents its own challenges. Conte has been able to use a settled side in the Premier League without the extra playing demands of Europe — a point that has been raised by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho — so next season will be more of a slog. At former club Juventus, Conte had two seasons in the Champions League: Juve reached the quarterfinals in 2012-13 before being swept aside by Bayern Munich, and then failed to advance from its group the following year. After his second try, Conte

bemoaned the difference between Juventus and the top European clubs, saying: “When you sit in a restaurant where a meal costs 100 euros, you can’t think about eating with just 10 euros.” Virtually the same Juve team went on to reach the Champions League final the following year under Massimiliano Allegri, however. Conte will have to strengthen the Chelsea squad to cope with Europe and his work in the transfer market is sure to be scrutinized, with Conte having been frustrated in his dealings last summer. Top on the list of his concerns could be his strikers, with Diego Costa potentially set to leave for China this summer. Costa has his critics but he has led the line brilliantly for Chelsea this season, scoring 20 league goals, and won’t be easy to replace. Meanwhile, is the rarely used Michy Batshuayi good enough as a secondchoice striker? There are very few weaknesses in Chelsea’s squad, but with long-time club captain John Terry set to leave because his contract is expiring and Branislav Ivanovic recently departed, the team’s leadership group will be hit. Other concerns for Conte might be the fact that opponents have got used to his side’s 3-4-3 formation and might be able to handle it better. Chelsea, as champion, won’t start the season under the radar like it did last August — the telling statistic remains that no team has retained the title since Manchester United in 2009. For now, though, Conte will want to enjoy the winning the league for the fourth season in a row at club level. And it would be a surprise if it didn’t happen on Friday, with West Brom having gone six games and almost two months without a victory in the league. (rtr)

MILAN - Second-placed AS Roma host leaders Juventus in Serie A on Sunday but rather than thinking about trying to catch the runaway leaders they will be looking over their shoulders at their rivals for an automatic Champions League berth. Juventus need only a point to wrap up their sixth successive title and, even if they lose, will still have two more chances at home to Crotone and away to Bologna. Roma have a one-point cushion over Napoli and need to finish second to qualify for the Champions League group stage. Third place would mean a spot in the final playoff round where Italian teams have suffered six defeats in the last eight seasons.

Juve are seven points clear of Roma and eight ahead of Napoli with three games each left. If Juve and Napoli finish level on points, the Turin side would take the title on their better head-to-head record. Roma enjoyed a 4-1 win away to AC Milan last Sunday yet the harmony at the club has been disrupted by the uncomfortable Francesco Totti situation. Roma said last week that the 40-year-old, who has spent his entire career at the club, would stop playing at the end of the season and move to a boardroom role. Infantino hits out at ‘FIFA bashing’ and ‘fake news’ MANAMA - FIFA President Gianni Infantino took aim at critics of world football’s governing body on Thursday, saying the organisation had reformed and was now a victim of “fake news” and “FIFA bashing”. Speaking to the organisation’s 67th congress in the Bahraini capital, Infantino, who replaced Sepp Blatter as head of FIFA in 2016, said it was truly transforming itself. “We are rebuilding FIFA’s reputation after all that happened. We took over the organisation at it’s deepest point,” said Infantino, adding that there was no room for anyone who wanted to enrich themselves by “abusing football”. Several dozen football officials, mainly from Latin America, were indicted in the United States in 2015 on corruption-related charges, sparking the worst crisis in FIFA’s history. Infantino said criticism of the organisation under his leadership had not been fair, given improved transparency, controls and ethics procedures. “There is a lot of fake news and alternative facts about FIFA circulating,” he said. “FIFA bashing has become a national sport in some countries”. The Swiss administrator also made some barbed comments about some of his critics among governance experts after a week in which FIFA’s Ethics heads were replaced. “In the past many highly-paid experts, paid millions, have been hired by FIFA to help reform FIFA.
