NEW YORK — It’s not that often that Hugh Jackman gets a role speaking in his native Australian accent, so while working on the upcoming science-fiction thriller “Chappie” he had to get reacquainted with the dialect. The 46-year old Tony Award winner told The Associated Press on Tuesday that using his own accent “was great but weird.” “I had to practice it because it was way stronger than my natural accent,” Jackman said. Jackman also admits brushing up on some of the Australian slang that writer-director Neill Blomkamp wrote for the part. “He used a lot of phrases, and I had to end up Googling the slang,” Jackman said. “Neill was coming up with some really cool sayings. ... I was trying to think of more, so I ended up Googling some of them.”

“Chappie,” which opens in theaters on March 6, tells the story of a fallen police robot that is reprogrammed to think and feel for itself. Jackman said he had fun playing the film’s antagonist, an engineer strongly opposed to artificial intelligence. “We got to create this character that did stretch it a bit. We had a lot of fun with him from the look, his mannerism, the way he talked. At the same time, it was very much based in a reality that was needed for the movie in terms of the voice of caution,” Jackman said. Blomkamp is known for his science-fiction thrillers “District 9” and

“Elysium.” The last time Jackman appeared in a film using his native accent was in “Australia” in 2008, opposite Nicole Kidman. He did lend his voice to the 2012 animated film “Rise of the Guardians.” Jackman, who just finished a Broadway run in the Jez Butterworth play “The River,” says he will hit the stage again next month. “My one-man show I did here on Broadway a few years back, I’m going to do in Turkey. She’s a clumsy innocent with a childish ponytail in tights and a cardigan, he looks like he’s just stepped out of an ad for bespoke suits and new money pretention. We’re supposed to believe that sparks fly immediately, but this first meeting conjures up the dynamic of a predator and a scared feral animal more than anything else. Still, something snaps in Christian and he decides he must have her as his own. He starts popping up

everywhere, from the hardware store where she works to the college bar where she’s had a bit too much to drink to save her from a handsy friend. Soon he’s whisking Ana (Ms. Steele as he calls her) away on his helicopter to a garish bachelor’s pad/ penthouse apartment, wooing her with white wine (but not too much, as he constantly reminds her), domineering gazes, and antiquated formalities. Laughable sexual innuendo peppers all their conversations. But instead of the will-they-won’tthey tension that even the silliest sitcom can pull off effectively, the unfortunate consequence is that the nearly 40 minutes that it takes for Christian and Ana to go under the sheets almost seem more gratuitous than anything that happens in the Red Room of Pain. Also, after the sex starts, so do the exhaustive and dull contract negotiations. The chemistry between Johnson and Dornan is decent, even if they do seem to be acting in different movies. “These places will be utilized as a rehabilitation centera for the addicts”, he stated. Budiartha accompanied by Prevention Division Head, Ni Luh Ketut Lisdiani, revealed that 90 percent of addicts are productive aged people, with teenage addicts accounting for 40 percent of all addicts in Bali. “It is not a huge number but if the situation is not addressed the numbers will continue to rise. It is a good time for teachers to play the important role of reminding students to stay away

Farming generation lacking, youth tend to flock urban areas

BANGLI - At the moment, agriculture has increasingly minimal participation by the younger generation. It is the professional sector that is the least considered by young people today. The same is true is true of Bangli County, that is famous for its agriculture. The Head of Bangli Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency, A.A. Ngurah Samba, revealed that current lack of interest by younger generation in getting involved in the farming profession remains very low. According to him, young people are far more interested in sectors that yield more subsantial and clearer incomes, compared to agriculture. The younger generation is currently flocking to urban areas in order to pursue work that pays the minimal wage rather than getting involved in the agricultural sector. Gusti Suteja, a farmer from Taman Bali Village Bangli, echoed the words of Samba. He explained that the people working in the paddy fields at Subak Jelekungkang were all of the older generation. With an average age of 35, he emphasized that there was not a single young person involved in agricultural activities. “No members of the younger generation are willing to become farmers, all of them chose to go to work in urban areas”, he said. The lack of interest on the past of young people to become farmers is associated with prestige. The profession of farmer is considered a plebeian job that does not result in considerable income Currently farmers work in their own paddy fields, inherited from their parents. The number of

sharecroppers is minimal. The Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency needs to think hard about how to deal with this situation. To reduce the involvement of older farmers, the government has provided agricultural machinery. By 2014 a total of 60 units of hand tractors had been distributed around Bali with 22 tractors given to Bangli, 16 to Tembuku, 20 to Susut, and 2 to Kintamani. Another 24 were allocated to farmers this year. Samba conveyed, that the agricultural machinery was expected to improve the ability of farmers in increase production quantitatively and qualitatively by improving the effectiveness and efficiency of their work. The tractor giveaway was also intended to accelerate and improve land cultivation, enable simultaneous planting, and enhance agricultural yields and food self-sufficiency in face of the lack of young farmers.. He confirmed that farmers who were formerly growing rice had switched to other crops, such as coconut and papaya. In response to this, Samba claimed that his party would conduct an investigation and find out about the cause of the crop switching - whether it was due to lack of water or something else. “We will investigate the situation first, to find out the cause”, he said. He also revealed that if it was revelaed that there was in fact enough water to plant rice, there would be a possibility of switching back to rice paddies as part of an effort to increase food production. Police strictly guard demolition of concrete on Anturan Beach SINGARAJA - Execution of demolition to concrete jutting out to sea at Munduk hamlet, Anturan village, Buleleng subdistrict on Tuesday (Feb 10) was closely guarded by police. A number of police personnel from Singaraja Town Police and noncommissioned military personnel were also deployed to secure the execution by judiciary team with the Buleleng Municipal Police. Twists, turns, eventually lead to promising Ebola vaccine

WASHINGTON — It took 16 years of twists and turns. Over and over, Dr. Nancy Sullivan thought she was close to an Ebola vaccine, only to see the next experiment fail. “A case of resuscitation more than once,” is how the U.S. National Institutes of Health researcher describes the journey. But it is those failures that Sullivan credits for finally leading her to a vaccine promising enough to test in parts of West Africa ravaged by Ebola. Last week, volunteers in Liberia’s capital began rolling up their sleeves for the first large-scale testing of two potential Ebola vaccines, the one Sullivan developed at NIH and a similar one created by Canada’s government. Sullivan just hopes it was in time to prove whether the shots really work. Ebola has claimed nearly 9,000 lives in West Africa over the past year, although new infections have dropped dramatically in recent months. It’s too soon to declare victory: Last week, new cases inched up for the first time this year, and health officials fear a resurgence if they don’t completely stamp out the disease before the upcoming rainy season. Waning cases make it more difficult to tell if a vaccine is protective, but the shots will be tested in multiple places and ways “hoping that one of those will give us real data,” said Dr. Bruce Aylward of the World Health Organization. Getting to that step is a story of nitty-gritty laboratory science, the kind that seldom makes headlines. “You don’t know what’s going to be important 15 years from now,” noted Sullivan, a cell biologist who

kept hitting roadblocks as she tried to unravel enough mysteries of the immune system to create an Ebola vaccine. “You need a failure to know what immune responses aren’t helpful, as difficult as they were at the time,” she said. It all started in the late 1990s, when Sullivan, who had just earned her Ph.D. at Harvard, landed a new job at the University of Michigan. She wanted to study how Ebola infects cells, but her boss, Dr. Gary Nabel, gave her a bigger assignment: develop a vaccine capable of protecting monkeys. Back then, the average person probably knew of Ebola only from Richard Preston’s best-seller “The Hot Zone” or the movie “Outbreak.” Discovered in 1976, the virus cropped up every few years in remote parts of Africa, killed dozens to a few hundred people with horrifying swiftness and retreated back into the jungle again. Early vaccine attempts had failed. “The thinking was, this virus was too aggressive, it’s not possible to mount an immune response in sufficient time,” recalled Sullivan, who followed Nabel to NIH and now heads biodefense vaccine research there. Most vaccines spur production of immune system antibodies that block a

virus from entering cells, but Sullivan didn’t think that would be enough for Ebola, a large virus that infects in an unusual way. Gene-based vaccines can induce additional virus fighters called T cells, so that’s what Sullivan created with pieces of Ebola genetic material. In July 1999, colleagues emailed that they’d given her vaccine to monkeys and measured a big immune reaction. Sullivan recently showed President Barack Obama the lab notebook where she’d scribbled her reaction: “Yahoo!” In November 2000, Sullivan and Nabel reported in the journal Nature that four vaccinated monkeys survived an otherwise lethal dose of Ebola. But her vaccine required multiple shots over several months, not useful during an outbreak. Sullivan scaled back, using a human cold virus, called an adenovirus, to carry the Ebola genetic material in one shot. Then she learned it wouldn’t work in people who’ve had that particular cold virus. Using rare human adenoviruses didn’t work at all; finally a chimpanzee cold virus did the trick. “It isn’t the case where you discover something and instantly move it to humans,” Sullivan wants the public to understand. “There are lots of pitfalls.” (ap)

Grey matter loss from smoking may be reversible

PARIS - Damage to the brain’s outer layer caused by smoking may be reversible after quitting, but it could take years, a study said Tuesday. Brain scans of 500 Scottish septuagenarians confirmed a link between smoking and an acceleration of age-related thinning of the cortex -- the outer layer of grey matter, researchers reported. But they also pointed, for the first time, to potential for recovery after quitting. The cortex of ex-smokers in the group “seems to have partially recovered for each year without smoking,” the multinational research team wrote in the Nature journal Molecular Psychiatry. But they warned that: “Although partial recovery seems possible, it can be a long process.” Many studies have linked cigarette smoking with cognitive decline and dementia, and some also with brain degeneration. “Evidence suggests that smokers have, on average, slightly poorer global cognitive functioning in later life, as well as lower mean scores on several cognitive domains such as cognitive flexibility and memory,” said the study authors. But it has never been shown whether the effects may be reversible. For the new study, the team used people who had participated in the Scottish Mental Survey as school children in 1947, when their

cognitive function was tested. The survivors underwent MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans again in 2007, and the results of 504 of them were analysed. There were 36 current smokers, 223 ex-smokers and 245 who had never smoked in the group, which had an average age of 73, said the study paper. There was no significant difference between their ages or childhood IQ, and the group was split just almost equally between men and women. Analysis of the scans showed that current smokers “had a generally thinner cortex than those who had never smoked,” said the study. As for the quitters, who had on average smoked about a pack a day for 30 years, “it took roughly 25 years without smoking for differences in cortical thickness to no longer be observed between ex-smokers and those that never smoked,” the authors wrote. And they warned: “Heavy exsmokers remained with a thinner cortex at age 73 years even after more than 25 years without smoking.” The findings could mean that giving up smoking caused cortical thinning to decelerate to a rate slower than normal age-related thinning, to allow ex-smokers to “catch up”, the study said. Or it could be that the cortex actually started to thicken and rebuild. (afp)

MIAMI - An experimental “smart insulin” that acts for 14 hours has shown promise in mice and could be tested in people with type 1 diabetes in two years, researchers said Monday. The product, known as InsPBA-F and developed by biochemists at the University of Utah, self-activates when blood sugar soars, according to the research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Tests on mice with a form of type 1 diabetes showed that one injection could “repeatedly and automatically lower blood sugar levels after mice are given amounts of sugar comparable to what they would consume at mealtime,” said the study. The drug closely mimicked the way the bodies of normal mice would return their blood sugar levels to normal after eating. “This is an important advance in insulin therapy,” said co-author

Danny Chou, assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Utah. “Our insulin derivative appears to control blood sugar better than anything that is available to diabetes patients right now.” People with type 1 diabetes must constantly monitor their blood sugar and manually inject themselves with insulin when needed. Any mistake or lapse can lead to complications, including heart disease, blindness or even death. Ins-PBA-F is a chemically modified version of a naturally occurring hormone. It differs from other “smart insulin” products in development that use a protein-based barrier, such as a gel or coating, that inhibits insulin when blood sugar is low. Snakefruit harvest abundant

Agriculture Agency prevents price from free fall

AMLAPURA - As previous years from January to March, abundant snakefruit crop flooded the market. Since the supply of snakefruit surpassed the demand, the price finally fell sharply. In order to prevent the price of snakefruit from dropping, the Karangasem Agriculture and Horticulture Agency channeled the crops to various processed products. Currently, the average price of snakefruit reaches IDR 3,000 per kilogram. It remains better when compared to the harvest in previous years that could only reach IDR 500 to IDR 1,500 per kilogram. Meanwhile, the price of sugar snakefruit is about IDR 10,000 per kilogram. It is different from the price of Balinese snakefruit, particularly those from Bebandem subdistrict, having not too bad selling price. The decrease occurred only about IDR 500 in the market price from IDR 3,500 to IDR 3,000 per kilogram. “Despite facing decline due to abundant supply during harvest season, the price of snakefruit does not drop too much,” said the Production Division Head of Karangasem Agriculture Agency, I Gusti Putu Sukasta, Tuesday (Feb 10). 100-car pileup on South Korean bridge leaves 2 dead, 68 hurt

SEOUL — Two people were killed and at least 68 were injured Wednesday in a pileup involving about 100 vehicles in foggy weather on a bridge near South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, officials said. He said 18 foreigners were hurt, including seven Chinese, three Thai nationals and two each from the Philippines and Vietnam. Farmers at Mengesta complain on fertilizer delay

TABANAN - As the planting season approaches, farmers at Subak Piling, Piling hamlet, Mengesta village, are facing a new problem. The NPK Pelangi fertilizer they ordered has not arrived yet. As described by Piling Kawan’s hamlet chief, I Ketut Astra Buana, the farmers had submitted their request for NPK fertilizer through the Definitive Plan of Working Group (RDKK). But so far, farmers have yet to receive the fertilizer. “We have only just received the Ponska fertilizer. However, farmers at Piling prefer to use NPK”, he said.

Iran marks Islamic Revolution anniversary amid nuclear talks

TEHRAN — Iran marked the anniversary of its 1979 Islamic Revolution on Wednesday with massive rallies, with many chanting against the U.S. and Israel as the country tries to reach a permanent deal with world powers over its contested nuclear program. The remote area lies 80 miles (130 kms) off the state’s northwest coast, beyond even sparsely populated subsistence whale-hunting towns such as Barrow, the northernmost community in the U.S. Federal estimates, however, show that the Chukchi and Beaufort seas could hold 26 billion barrels of recoverable oil, and many Alaska leaders are eager to begin drilling in the area to create jobs and generate revenue. About 90 percent of Alaska state

revenue comes from oil taxes or fees, and with the price drop of nearly $60 per barrel since April, the state faces a $3.5 billion budget deficit next year. Leaders in Alaska want to find new drilling opportunities to offset those losses. UN: At least 200 migrants dead and possibly more off Italy ROME — The U.N. refugee agency says some 200 migrants — and possibly many more — have died in frigid temperatures in the latest deadly Mediterranean tragedy. Elephant patrols seek to protect Indonesia’s rainforests TRUMON, Indonesia - Indonesian men ride on Sumatran elephants as they patrol though dense jungle in the west of the tropical archipelago, warriors on the front line of the fight against illegal logging and poaching. They trek alongside rivers, over rough terrain and deep into the rainforest in an area that is home to numerous endangered species, from orangutans to tigers, but which has suffered devastating deforestation in recent years. The sprawling Indonesian archipelago has large swathes of tropical forest but vast tracts are being felled to make way for palm oil and pulp and paper plantations, destroying biodiverse habitats and adding to greenhouse gas emissions. Much of the logging that takes place is illegal as it happens outside concessions granted to companies, but it is hard for authorities to keep track. Poaching of endangered species is also common, with elephants killed for their ivory and tigers for their pelts. The elephant patrol project, run with communities in the Trumon district of Aceh province, on Sumatra island, aims to give a helping hand. It employs local men as “mahouts”, or elephantkeepers, who keep a lookout for illegal logging and poaching and report it to authorities to follow up. Hendra Masrijal, 33, quit his job as a food vendor to become a mahout. He is among a group of around about 25 keepers involved in the scheme, including former separatists who fought against the central government until a peace deal was struck a decade ago. “It makes me sad when I see pictures of elephants killed by poachers for their tusks,” Masrijal told AFP. “Their habitat is also being encroached (on) by farmers and villagers.” The patrols deep into the jungle last between two and seven days, with mahouts normally spending 15 to 20 days a month on expeditions. The initiative covers a vast area of 27,000 hectares (66,700 acres) called the “Trumon Wildlife Corridor”, which is wedged between two conservation areas. Authorities are currently trying to push through legislation to give it protected status. As well as keeping a watch for logging and poaching, the programme has staff who conduct training in local communities and develop eco-tourism to give villagers who have traditionally lived off illegal practices an alternative livelihood. Tisna Nando, a spokeswoman for USAID, which has funded the expansion of the project over the past year, said communities were “enthusiastic” about the initiative. “They see that they can actually benefit economically from protecting the forest in the area, rather than cutting it down,” she told AFP. A study last year published in the journal Nature Climate Change showed that Indonesia had for the first time surpassed Brazil in its rate of tropical forest clearance, despite a moratorium on new logging permits imposed several years ago. Rivals suspect Ferrari’s testing form shows real progress

Ferrari’s strong form in the first pre-season Formula 1 test has left rivals wary that it might have made a much bigger leap than expected over the winter. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were fastest on three of the four days of the first pre-season test at Jerez last week. Their consistent speed throughout the test has prompted speculation over whether Ferrari’s speed is a sign of a genuine breakthrough or can be put down to simple low-fuel glory runs. CAIRO — Egyptian prosecutors have ordered three soccer fans detained for 15 days and have released 18 others on bail in the wake of a deadly stampede outside a Cairo stadium. The fans are accused of attacking policemen, damaging police cars and terrorizing the public, an official said Tuesday. The official said the three still detained include a 15-year old. He said 18 others were released after paying a $26 bail each, pending investigation. They are all also accused of rioting and burning a police car. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.
