YouTube pares back Logan Paul partnership after suicide video post

LOS ANGELES - YouTube said Wednesday it is removing popular American vlogger Logan Paul from its Google Preferred platform and putting future projects with him on hold, after Paul posted a video on the platform of a suicide victim in Japan.

“In light of recent events, we have decided to remove Logan Paul’s channels from Google Preferred. Additionally, we will not feature Logan in season 4 of ‘Foursome’ and his new Originals are on hold,” Alphabet Inc’s YouTube, said in a statement. Google Preferred features YouTube’s most popular content in packages for sale to advertisers. Paul, 22, is one of YouTube’s top content creators, regularly drawing millions of views from his mainly youth-orientated audience. Paul also had projects in the works with YouTube’s premium subscription service, YouTube Red, and appeared on the platform’s web series “Foursome.” Representatives for Paul did not immediately return

requests from Reuters for comment. Paul apologized in a YouTube video titled “So Sorry” last week for posting the video that showed him and his friends laughing about the body they filmed hanging on a tree in Japan’s “suicide forest.” Paul said he had made a “huge mistake” and was ashamed of himself, and he deleted the video after it caused a social media backlash. YouTube in an open letter on Tuesday said it was “upset by the video that was shared last week,” saying that “suicide is not a joke, nor should it ever be a driving force for views.” The company said Paul’s video violated its guidelines and it was “looking at further consequences.” Paul has not posted any videos in the past week, saying he was “taking time to reflect.” Paul’s channel, Logan Paul Vlogs, which has more than 15 million subscribers, is still active on YouTube and advertisers can still choose to advertise on his videos, or they can opt out. LOS ANGELES - Oscar winning actor Michael Douglas has issued a pre-emptive denial of a sexual misconduct accusation, saying he wanted to get ahead of a potential story being investigated by Hollywood publications. In a lengthy interview with entertainment industry website Deadline.com, published late on Tuesday, Douglas denied that he had masturbated in front of a woman who worked for him about 32 years ago. “This is a complete lie, fabrication, no truth to it whatsoever,” Douglas said. The accusation by the unidentified woman has not been published but Douglas said he had been informed by his attorneys in December that The Hollywood Reporter and other publications were investigating her claim. “I felt the need to get ahead of this,” Douglas, 73, told Deadline.

“I had the choice of waiting for a story to come out, one that will clearly get picked up by other newspapers and magazines, and then I have to sit there and try to defend myself.” The double Oscar-winner is the second celebrity to get his version of events out before being publicly accused of sexual impropriety in a scandal that has rocked Hollywood and led to many men being fired or cut out of projects. Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock posted a social media message last month saying he was “part of the problem,” saying he had in the past been accused of rape and had settled a sexual harassment lawsuit. Douglas told Deadline he had been informed by his attorney that the woman also accused him of using coarse language around her, but not to her, and claimed that he had “blackballed” her in the industry after firing her. Due to the large volume and strong flow of water, visitors were temporarily forbidden from visiting Tegenungan waterfall as temporary buildings were swept away by the river. By Thursday (Jan. 10), the condition of the 30 meter high waterfall was back to normal, although the color of the water is still muddy as it carries silt down from Northern Gianyar. “Hope-

fully the volume of water does not overflow again like it did this weekend”, said Raka. Since the beginning of the year, there have been about 2,000 foreign and domestic visitors a day to the waterfalls. This is down from the 3,000 visitors a day at this time last year. GIANYAR —As of Wednesday (Jan.10), motorists were continuing to commit parking infractions in the tourist area of Ubud. Police have been affixing warning stickers on offending vehicles. However starting on Thursday (Jan. 11), the Gianyar Police Traffic Affairs started handing out parking tickets to offenders in Ubud. “I have ordered to my officers to start (on Thursday—Ed) giving tickets to traffic offenders”, said Chief of Gianyar Police Traffic Affairs, Gde Eka Putra Astawa, on Wednesday. In fact the ticketing was meant to start in early January but certain constraints postponed the ticketing. However starting on Thursday the police have started handing out tick-

ets. “At first we just affixed stickers to cars that were in no parking areas because the drivers were not around”, he explained. Offending cars will now be towed in collaboration with the Gianyar Transportation Agency. “We are still working out the details, once the tow truck is ready, car in violation will be towed”, he said. Marijuana of almost 1 kg alleged to be thrown into prison

MANGUPURA — Warden of Kerobokan Prison found two packages of plastic wraps weighing 990 grams on Tuesday (Jan. 9). The marijuana package was secured in the area between post 4 and post 5 in the southern part. Allegedly the package of illicit goods was thrown from outside the prison at Jalan Gunung Tangkuban Perahu, Kerobokan, North Kuta.

As information obtained in the field, around 11:00 a guard member, I Gede Agus Suarjunaidi, 32, was on duty. When burning garbage in front of post 5 at 11:36, Agus heard a sound of falling object. At that time, the defendant took a knife and stabbed it into the victim’s neck and to some parts of the victim’s body. As a result, the blood spilled onto the floor. washed his hands in the first-floor sink. He also changed his bloody clothes by wearing the victim’s clothes on the shelf. Around 14:00, the defendant left the victims’ home by driving the victims’ Ignis vehicle to meet his wife, Ni Putu Ayu Sekarini Asih. He asked for the key to the boarding house and changed clothes as well. The defendant was back and asked for permission to his wife (she did not know about the murder) and then told if he would like to go home to Negara. He then rushed to drive the victims’ car and went home. However, upon arrival in Munggu area, he saw a petrol merchant. He got an idea to eliminate the evidence. The defendant then found out a used bottle in the trash and then purchased gasoline, incense and matches. The defendant then decided to turn back and headed for Jimbaran.

At 19:00, the defendant arrived at victims’ house and sprinkled three bottles of gasoline on the first and second floor. In the meantime, the incense purchased was divided and lit, including putting some pieces on the victims’ body. After completing all, the defendant locked all the doors of the victims’ house. However, the gate and the car tank were left open. At 22:00 all the preparations were well done and the defendant fled by jumping through the gate. He walked to his boarding house and arrived at 02:00 in the morning. The house and both corpses were finally caught on fire until police officers came down to the crime scene. The defendant who was not peaceful then surrendered to Pemogan Police Post. In this case, the defendant is charged under articles 338 and 365 of the Criminal Code. (kmb37)

Application of e-ticket at Tanah Lot to enter bidding process

TABANAN — Implementation of electronic tickets (e-tickets) at the Tanah Lot tourist attraction will soon be realized. Regent of Tabanan, Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti, explained that e-tickets will be put into effect in the two or three months. “We are still in the preparation process, once the booth is ready we will start the biding process”, she said on Wednesday (Jan. 10). The program that was first launched in 2015 is in line with the electronic money or e-money program run by the district government of Tabanan. The district of Tabanan is currently implementing e-money to control expenditure and maximize regional income. “E-tickets

will allow clear tracking of tickets sales”, she added. The management of Tanah Lot tourist attraction conducted an inauguration ritual at for the electronic booths on Wednesday (Jan. 10), at four locations (two counters, the reserved parking lot and at the tourist information booth). Operations Manager of Tanah Lot Attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana, said that he has not received any information about when the electronic ticket both will be installed. “We have no information yet, and the survey has not been done yet. The locations that were inaugurated will be used for manual tickets only”, he explained. AMLAPURA — Residents of Timbrah customary village, Pertima, held their annual nyaga rituals in each tulukan (end of house row) of the residential settlement on Wednesday (Jan. 10). This ritual went on for six days before the implementation of the usaba muhumuhu on January 16. The nyaga ritual is the part of the usaba muhu-muhu that is intended as caru to neutralize evil spirits. Penyengker dina or metuhun buah is in effect over the same week when no other rituals can be held in the customary village until the peak of the usaba muhu-muhu ritual. The usaba muhu-muhu ritual always draws the attention of passerbys as the paraphernalia used is quite unique and made by representatives of each row of houses in turn. For instance, the oblation known aslahapan is composed of erythrina twigs and decorated with palm leaves, coconut tree bark and pelocokan made of bamboo. Meanwhile, offerings includes the banten nasi tebogan, panyeneng, canang bayuhan, sesayut, teterag, peradegan to pecaruan or segehan rice ketelan. The ritual using nyaga paraphernalia and offerings is officiated over by greatgrandchildren and temple priests in every residential settlement in the east, central and west of the center of customary village. Local residents are very enthusiastic about carrying this ritual as

seen from the facilities an d offerings that are made over two days before the implementation of the ritual. After hearing an announcement over the village loudspeaker at noon, the ritual paraphernalia and lahapan offerings are placed neatly in front of people’s homes. This scene sometimes draws the attention of passerbys from nearby villages and foreign tourists. Chief of Timbrah customary village, Wayan Sukertha, said the nyaga ritual is performed in order to neutralize evil spirits (bhuta kala) on a smaller scale before the larger caru that involves a buffalo is done for theusaba muhu-muhu. Caru offerings are meant to invoke the safety and welfare of all the residents of the village. “The customary village uses a buffalo as the sacrificial animal for the usaba muhu-muhu”, said Sukertha. During this ritual, local residents pary together at the where the Dalem Tengah Temple where the caru ritual is also carried out for the village. The annual Usaba muhu-muhu is greeted enthusiastically by local residents including those who have moved to other areas and return home to pray together. At the end of the ritual, after the caru offerings have ben made, all the people of Timbrah customary village megibung(have meals together) in each of the village meeting pavilions. TUNIS - Over 300 protesters were arrested overnight and the army was deployed in several Tunisian cities in violent demonstrations over prices, taxes and unemployment that have swept the country. In Thala, near the Algerian border, troops were sent in after protesters burned down the national security building forcing police to retreat from the town, witnesses told Reuters. Violent anti-government protests have raged in other towns in the North African country since Monday, among them the tourist resort of Sousse, against price and tax rises imposed by government to cut a ballooning deficit and satisfy international lenders. While Tunisia is widely seen as the only democratic success story among “Arab Spring” nations, it has also had nine governments since the overthrow of authoritarian leader Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, none of which have been able

to deal with growing economic problems. “Three hundred and thirty people involved in acts of sabotage and robbery were arrested last night,” interior Ministry spokesman Khelifa Chibani said bringing the number of detainees since the protests began to around 600. The army was also deployed in several other cities, including Sousse, Kebeli and Bizert to protect government buildings that have become a target for protesters. BUSINESS The Fed, worrying about the next recession, considers changes

Even while the economy and markets are booming, Federal Reserve officials are worrying about how they’ll respond to the next recession, and they don’t especially like the picture they see. It’s one where the economy starts contracting but the Fed, still at a low interest rate, has little ability to respond. It lowers rates to zero but that amounts to only a fraction of the stimulus it has provided in past downturns. Once again, the Fed faces the quandary of what more it can do when it’s at zero and can’t cut anymore and is forced to contemplate extraordinary, uncertain and controversial measures like quantitative easing. More and more, Fed officials and academic economists are wondering if there’s a better way and beginning to think seriously about a dramatic change to monetary policy that would revise or even scrap its current, flailing 2 percent inflation target. The Fed has missed that target almost since it was implemented in 2012, undermining its credibility in markets and possibly entrenching expectations that inflation will always run below target. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, speaking at a Brookings Institution conference this week on the Fed’s inflation target problem, urged the Fed to get moving on a

fix. He noted that the Fed typically has lowered interest rates by 5 percentage points over time to stimulate the economy in recessions. The Fed doesn’t have 5 points now, so the next recession will find the central bank less able to kick-start growth, possibly enabling a longer, deeper downturn. “The overwhelming likelihood is that when recession comes, policy will not have sufficient room to cut rates as much as it would like to within the current framework,’’ Summers said. Quoting a recent research paper, Summers suggested the Fed could be at a zero interest rate 30 to 40 percent of the time in the future unless it changes its current regime. “I am completely unconvinced that (quantitative easing) can be our salvation next time around,’’ Summers said.

Out of fiscal bullets as well?

The recent tax bill, which boosted the deficit outlook, means the fiscal side will have less ability to respond next time around as well. The solution gaining the most traction and mention by officials and academics is called “price-level targeting,” and at least three Fed officials in recent weeks have talked about it, though with varying levels of support. Currently, Fed policy calls for the Fed to hit a 2 percent inflation target over time. It continues to shoot for that inflation

rate even while it continuously misses that goal. Price-level targeting would ratchet up the seriousness of the effort. It would account for those past misses and prompt the Fed to aim for a higher target in the future to make up for its prior shortcomings. The belief is that this would convince markets and consumers of the Fed’s commitment, running a higher inflation rate to account for prior gaps. “The price-level target will keep rates lower for longer,’’ San Francisco Fed President John Williams said at the Brookings conference. Williams has been among the most outspoken advocates of making the change. Over time, it’s hoped that a price-level target would keep the Fed away from zero, giving the policymakers ammunition to fight the next recession. Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester spoke last week on several changes, including price-level targeting, saying the Fed could consider changes to its inflation target, but she was careful not to advocate any single solution. “Each framework is worthy of further study, and now may be an appropriate time to undertake such study because the economy is growing, labor markets are strong and inflation is projected to move back to our goal,” Mester said. Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren also advocated discussion of the topic, noting the Fed’s persistent failure to hit its target. “The Great Recession was a big enough event that we might want to reassess and say, “How do we make sure we don’t have those kinds of events?” he said at Brookings. There’s little conviction that price-level targeting or any of the alternatives is a silver bullet. Some wonder why the Fed, if it can’t hit its inflation target, will be able to hit a price-level target. By advocating higher inflation for a time, there’s concern that the Fed will introduce more volatility to both inflation and growth. And practically speaking, any change is a long way off. Fed Chairman nominee Jerome Powell hasn’t been approved yet by the Senate, though he’s supposed to start his term in three weeks. Former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, an advocate of a variant of price-level targeting, says the new chairman will likely appoint a committee to discuss the issue and the debate could take a year to 18 months. “Somewhere in 2019 there will be some pretty serious discussions,” Bernanke said. At the slow pace that the Fed changes policy and regimes, if it wants to change something in two years, it better begin talking about it now. But no one can say if that change will take place in time for the next downturn. (rtr)

Govt opens rice import option

JAKARTA - The government through the Ministry of Trade stated that it opened the option of importing special rice to strengthen the stock. Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita asserted that if the imports is carried out by the government, then the rice to be imported is not that of the medium quality, but special rice and is done in an effort to strengthen government stock. “Option of import is open, but I choose special rice only so that it would not harm our farmers and rice production,” said Lukita, when met at his office in Jakarta on Wednesday. The emergence of the rice import option is a response to the statement of Vice President Jusuf Kalla who asked state-logistics board Bulog to review rice import option to bring down rice prices at the consumer level. In recent times, the price of rice, especially that of the medium quality, has climbed and above the Highest Retail Price (HET) set by

the government. Based on data from Bulog, the current stock is approximately 950 thousand tons. Commercial rice stocks are only about 11 thousand tons, while cheap rice or rice assistance for the poor (rastra) is still declared safe is able to meet the needs of up to four months ahead. Vice President Jusuf Kalla has asked for studies of import option of medium-grade rice to stabilize prices which continue to increase in the market. “The import option is not prohibited but we asked that it should first be studied in case there is something necessary such as constant price increases that require immediate rice import,” he told reporters at the Presidential Office on Tuesday. The Vice President has earlier held a rice-related meeting with ministers and related officials. The Vice President conveyed that response in relation

to the continuing upward trend if rice price which has now reached more than Rp11,000 per kg, exceeding the highest retail price (HET) of Rp9.450 per kg. The Basic Necessity Market Monitoring System (SP2KP) of the Trade Ministry, sees that the price of medium quality rice has continued to increase. On Sunday (Jan 7), the national average price of medium quality rice was Rp11,041 but on Monday it increased to Rp11,131 per kilogram and Tuesday it rose to Rp11,177 per kg. The Vice President on the occasion asked state logistics board Bulog to conduct a massive market operation to curb the price increase. Referring to the report of the Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman, according to Vice President, in January there will also be rice harvest for rice that was planted in October so that it will increase rice stock. This unique ritual took place solemnly and festively attended by all local villagers. Chief of Sambirenteng customary village, Jro Bendesa Nengah Mas, said that the mecakcakan is a tradition having been carried out from generation to generation. Actually this ceremony is a series of pecaruan (animal sacrifice) at local village. The whole customary villagers are required to submit a rooster to the committee. If villagers do not submit a fighting rooster, it can be replaced with money. After that, the roosters of customary villagers are then pitted in the area of the village shrine. Uniqueness of this ritual

lies in the cockfighting where watching people are not allowed to bet, so that this ritual is free from the impression of gambling. The losing rooster is slaughtered and cooked together to fill in the ritual oblations. The remaining will be enjoyed together through megibung in the area of the Bale Agung temple. “This ritual is a heritage we’ve received and shall be held every year,” he said. According to Mas, from his predecessors the Mecakcakan ritual is held every entering the new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (January). This ritual signifies the devotion of people to God having bestowed prosperity to universe, especially to Sambirenteng village. However, in one region, this type of green vegetable sometimes becomes favorite food. Moreover, it is processed in a simple manner. It just needs to be boiled and then mixed with tomato seasoning and fried onion to make the taste very delicious. It offers typical and

tempting aroma. Plecing gonda has become a typical food for Balinese community. This vegetable menu is very close to farmers living in countryside. Other than easy to get the ingredient, the preparation is also easy. Simply fill with spices in the form of garlic, chili, large chili peppers, tomatoes, shrimp paste, lemon and salt to taste, plecing gonda is already tasted different from other vegetables.

Merkel sees “tough day” in crunch German coalition talks

BERLIN - Chancellor Angela Merkel said her conservatives still had high hurdles to clear in Thursday’s talks on forming a coalition with Social Democrats (SPD) pressing for accelerated European integration. Merkel, weakened by an election setback in September, turned to the left-leaning SPD to seek a re-run of their so-called “grand coalition” after the collapse in November of talks on a threeway coalition untested at national level. The chancellor, who has won widespread respect abroad in more than 12 years in power, needs the coalition talks to succeed to avoid her personal authority being further undermined and Germany’s international standing diminished. Speaking at the start of the final day of exploratory talks that could lead to formal negotiations, Merkel said it would be a tough day but she recognised that Germans expected results. “Of course we also have in mind that we have to create a good policy platform for our country. So it’s going to be a tough day,” she said. SPD leader Martin Schulz, a former president of the European Parliament,

made clear his priority was Europe. “On the last day of exploratory talks we will make clear that above all this must be a new start for the European Union,” he told reporters. “If we join a government it will be on the condition that it makes Europe strong.” Schulz has called for a United States of Europe by 2025 - an idea rejected by senior conservatives, many of whom are wary of such ambitious reform plans that they worry could see Germany funnel more of its taxpayers’ money to other EU states. However, Merkel helped lead Europe through its twin euro zone and refugee crises and is adept at finding compromises, especially on European issues. Should the parties fail to reach a deal on Thursday they could extend the talks, though President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is eager for an agreement, keenly aware that businesses want a stable coalition to end the uncertainty and avoid another vote.

Participants have described the negotiations as “good”, but SPD leaders need to convince their party members and are offering them a vote on Jan. 21 on whether to proceed. Merkel has ruled with the SPD in a sometimes unwieldy “grand coalition” in two of her three previous terms in office, including in the last parliament from 2013-2017. But both parties bled support in the Sept. 24 election, which saw the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) enter the Bundestag lower house of parliament for the first time. Many in the SPD rank-andfile oppose a repeat of the grand coalition as they fear it will further diminish the identity of the party, which suffered its worst result in September’s vote since the modern Federal Republic was founded in 1949. LONDON - Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May will pledge on Thursday to eliminate avoidable plastic waste within 25 years, in an attempt to shift the focus away from her government’s divisions over Brexit to a more wide-ranging domestic agenda. After months of headlines dominated by Brexit, scandal and an ill-judged election, May will try to show that she has a grip on domestic issues to help counter the rising popularity of the opposition Labour Party. In a speech on the environment, May will announce plans to close the exemption that means retailers with fewer than 250 employees do not have to charge customers 5 pence for a single-use plastic bag. Avoidable plastic waste is a term used by industry to describe products including plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles and most food packaging. May will also urge supermarkets to introduce plastic-free aisles where all the food is loose and announce a consultation on changes to the tax system to help reduce the use of other single-use plastic items. “This truly is one of the great environmental scourges of our time,” May will say, according to excerpts of a speech released by her office. “In years to come, I think people will be shocked at how today we allow so much plastic to be produced needlessly.” May will say over 1 million birds and over 100,000 other sea mammals and turtles die every year from eating and getting tangled in plastic waste, while one in three fish caught in the English Channel contains pieces of plastic. In 2015, Britain introduced a charge of 5 pence on all singleuse plastic bags provided by large shops, which led to an 83 percent reduction in UK plastic bags used in the first year. Earlier this week, a ban on plastic microbeads used in cosmetics and personal care products came into force across Britain. Worries about overuse of 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups each year have also been raised by campaigners, and the environmental audit committee last week called for a 25 pence “latte levy” to be charged on top of the price of a hot drink. Environment Secretary Michael Gove showed he was ready to practise what he preached, by turning up for a cabinet meeting clutching a reusable coffee mug earlier this week. (rtr)

JAKARTA - Indonesia is lucky to have the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) that has always supported development efforts across the country, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated here on Wednesday. “Indonesia is lucky to have the PDIP that has militant cadres, who are democratic, visionary, and never forget the history of the nation,” he noted in a speech at the commemoration of the ruling party`s 45th anniversary. The president remarked that the PDIP cadres support the efforts to undertake Indonesia-centric development, the initiatives to transform the nation into a global maritime axis, and implementation of the “Nawacita” (nine agendas) of the government. The party also reflects the country`s motto of unity in diversity, he noted. He stressed that the PDIP cadres had always supported poverty alleviation efforts and the fight against backwardness as well as the social gap. Jokowi also emphasized that PDIP`s service to the country is far from over and is to be continued for the development of the country. “I believe the spirit behind PDIP`s resilience, so far, has been “gotong royong” (solidarity). This is what has helped us to stand united. It is the spirit of gotong royong that has convinced us that we will be able to fight for goals that are noble,” he stated. JAKARTA - The controversy has continued over the decision of Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan to stop sinking foreign fishing vessels found operating illegally in Indonesian water. The law rules the sinking of foreign fishing vessels poaching in Indonesian water, law observer from the University of Bung Karno Azmi Syahputra said. “The sinking of foreign fishing vessels operating illegally in Indonesian water is on order of the law . It is in line with the fishery law,” Azmi said here on Thursday. Luhut has said there would be no ship sinking in 2018 as the government wants to focus more on increasing fish production to boost exports. LONDON - Julia Marino will head to next month’s Winter Games as a major medal contender, yet the American snowboarder may not have been on the plane to Pyeongchang at all were it not for a twist of fate during her teenage years. Marino emerged seemingly out of nowhere two years ago and has transformed herself into a major force in the discipline, with the 20-year-old leading a vibrant group of American freestyle snowboarders looking to take the Olympics by storm. At the age of 18, Marino leaped into the limelight when she won the Big Air World Cup event at the iconic Fenway Park baseball stadium in Boston, arriving as an alternate but seizing her chance when fellow American Ty Walker withdrew. Marino’s stock continued to soar at the 2017 Winter X Games in Aspen, where she became the first female snowboarder to win medals in two categories -- gold in slopestyle and bronze in big air. However, speaking to Reuters at a team freestyle camp in Stubai, Austria, Marino admitted that the extra attention heading into an Olympic year was causing her some anxiety. “But it is a good kind of stress,” she added quickly. “It is fun to have that and it is not something that psyches you out too much I guess, it just pumps you up and it is just a little adrenaline high that makes you want to work harder.” For young athletes, constant acclaim can become a little overwhelming, particularly in an individual discipline, but Marino says the U.S. team dynamic, which groups all the coaches and athletes together, has helped steady the nerves. “When you ride with someone, I think you progress at a faster rate because one, you are having fun and two, when you see something that they are doing, you want to do the same thing and then you guys just build off each other,” Marino said. If all goes to plan, Marino will lead a group of young snowboarders to their first Olympics, with teenage prospects Chloe Kim, Hailey Langland and Chris Corning all expected to make the team at the expense of more experienced riders. Marino long believed she was destined to one day compete at a Winter Games but had it not been for an incident on a family holiday when aged 13, she could have been on skis instead. Growing up near New York, her family regularly embarked on winter holidays in Colorado where, despite an early flirtation with snowboarding, the young Marino was an avid skier. MELBOURNE, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Roger Federer will open his Australian Open title defence against Slovenian Aljaz Bedene next week, while top seed Rafa Nadal, the losing finalist last year, was paired with Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos at the draw on Thursday. Women’s top seed Simona Halep of Romania faces Australian wildcard Destanee Aiava in the first round, with second seed Caroline Wozniacki starting out against Halep’s compatriot Mihaela Buzarnescu. Serena Williams will not defend the women’s title having had her first child last year but 2008 champion Maria Sharapova, who failed a drugs test at the tournament in 2016, is back unseeded after a ban and will face Germany’s Tatjana Maria. Despite forking out £75 million for Romelu Lukaku in the summer, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly on the hunt for an additional striker in the January transfer window.

Lukaku has been heavily relied upon since his switch to Old Trafford, with only David De Gea (1980) and Nemanja Matic (1944) playing more Premier League minutes than the Belgium international (1814) under Mourinho this season. “The boy is tired. He is physically a monster but not a machine and he is feeling it,” Mourinho said of Lukaku before Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Southampton.”The other day, I said [he had played] 19 matches in the Premier League; now I say 20 matches in the Premier League, 90 minutes. I think for a striker, any player, that’s absolutely incredible.” And the 24-year-old did indeed start for United in their final outing of 2017 but was forced off following a head clash after just 14 minutes, with Marcus Rashford taking his place. Rashford, as well as Anthony Martial are fine understudies for Lukaku, with Jesse Lingard also able to operate in a centreforward role. With Rashford woefully out of form, though, Martial more adept from wide

positions, and Lingard flourishing just off of the focal point, Mourinho is on the hunt for a direct replacement for Lukaku, should he need him. And while Mourinho has a ready-made swap in 36-yearold Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Swede has made just one start this season due to a recurring knee injury. “Zlatan needs sometimes very hard work on the muscle area that supports the knee that had the problem. When the period for that hard work comes, fatigue comes. To work really hard for a certain period of time he cannot play for these days, so we decide to do that. He’s on this cycle of work divided between the gym and the pitch.” It’s no wonder, then, that Mourinho has turned to Porto striker Moussa Marega. The 26-year-old has scored 14 Primeira Liga goals this season in just 14 starts and two substitute appearances, while registering two assists for his Porto team-mates. A product of his local side, French club Evry, Marega was handed his chance upon signing for third-division Amiens in 2013,

where he would score nine goals in his debut season for the club. He would eventually leave France for Portugal, joining Marítimo two seasons before Porto handed him a four-year deal with a €40 million buyout clause in place. A quiet first season with the coastal side saw him shipped to Vitoria S.C. where he would score 14 goals in 31 games and earn a recall into the Porto first team and a route into the Mali national side. Now, with only Bas Dost of Sporting and Jonas of Benfica ahead of him in the Primeira Liga goalscoring charts, a host of Premier League clubs are chasing his signature. Marega offers a physical presence as a central striker but has the discipline to be deployed in the wide areas, having played either side of forward partner Vincent Aboubakar this term and notching two goals and two assists while starting on the left of attack.
