CALIFORNIA - Donald Trump called Meryl Streep an “overrated actress” on Monday after the three-time Oscar winner publicly criticized him for having belittled a disabled journalist. Without naming the presidentelect, Streep, the most admired U.S. actress of her generation, assailed him while giving a lifetime achievement acceptance speech at Sunday night’s Golden Globe awards. Her speech received more than a million YouTube views. revival of local economy,” he advised. He hoped that all the components in Bali move in single integrated policy if wishing to make young people of Bali have entrepreneurship mentality. Campus, government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can participate in preparing the field for younger generation of Bali to become a host of Bali Island. “Rise up to overcome famine in the native entrepreneurs should be supported by all elements. This is the benchmark of the independence for Bali in the future,” he said. In the meantime, administrator of the Real Estate Indonesia (REI) of Bali Chapter, Gede Putra Semadi, said that to become working generation, Balinese people must perform various innovative measures. Capital, according to him, is not the main reason to be afraid of competing. Today, many entrepreneurs grow because of their creative and innovative measures. “The opportunity for Bali younger generation to become entrepreneurs is very open. Now, it just needs the way how to manage the existing opportunities,” he advised. He reminded that Bali must become beneficial investment area for Balinese people. “I think the regulations have been nurturing it. The problem is that the implementation at local level is not yet clear and effective. Japanese traveler experiences theft at hotel

MANGUPURA - A Japanese traveler, Yamada Mayumi, 49, reported a loss of JPY 43,000, put in the room of Hotel Aquarius Star on Jalan Legian, on Monday (Jan. 9). The culprit is no other than the hotel employee named Esa Tirtanaya, 19, so that he was immediately taken to Kuta Police Station. Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, said on Tuesday (Jan.

10) that the victim stayed in room 303. Initially her money worth JPY 43,000 was placed on the bed. After that, the victim went out of the room for breakfast. When returning to the room, in fact her money already disappeared and the incident was then reported to police station. Based on the report, a team led by Kuta Criminal Investigation Unit Budiartama conducted a

crime scene investigation. Results of the investigation led to the hotel employee because there were no damages found in the room. “We checked the hotel employees who were on duty at the time, where one of them is the perpetrator. When questioned, initially the perpetrator avoided, but after his confession was deepened he finally admitted,” he said. The suspect from Rogojampi,

Banyuwangi, East Java, admitted that he first came into the victim’s room by using a master key that was taken at the hotel reception. After that, the perpetrator pretended to check the completeness of the room. “The perpetrator knocked at the door of hotel room in advance. Since there is no response from the guest, the perpetrator came into the room by using a master key,” he said.

The victim’s money was then taken and exchanged at money changer and he obtained IDR 4.5 million. “The evidence is still intact because this case was quickly revealed. The incident clearly tarnished the image of Bali tourism. We hope employees of hotel and other establishments in Kuta to jointly maintain the security and not vice versa,” said Sumara. (kmb36)

Men who eat lots of red meat have higher risk for common bowel disease

BOSTON - A new study suggests that men who eat lots of red meat are much more likely to have bowel problems, pain and nausea than their peers who stick mainly with chicken or fish. Researchers examined more than two decades of data on more than 46,000 men and found frequent red meat eaters were 58 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diverticulitis, a common bowel condition that occurs when small pockets or bulges lining the intestines become inflamed. “Previous studies have shown that a high fiber diet is associated with a lower risk of diverticulitis, however, the role of other dietary factors in influencing risk of diverticulitis was not well studied,” said senior study author Andrew Chan, a researcher at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “Our result show that diets high in red meat may be associated with a higher risk of diverticulitis,” Chan added by email. Diverticulitis is common, resulting in more than 200,000 hospitalizations a year in the U.S. at a cost of more than $2 billion, Chan and colleagues note in the journal Gut. New cases are on the rise, and the exact causes are unknown, although the condition has been linked to smoking, obesity and the use of certain nonprescription painkillers known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). While diverticulitis can often be treated with a liquid or low-fiber diet, severe cases may require hospitalization and surgery to fix complications like

perforations in the gut wall. Researchers examined data collected on men who were aged 40 to 75 when they joined the study between 1986 and 2012. Every four years men were asked how often, on average, they ate red meat, poultry and fish over the preceding year. They were given nine options, ranging from ‘never’ or ‘less than once a month,’ to ‘six or more times a day.’ During the study period, 764 men developed diverticulitis. Men who ate the most red meat were also more likely to smoke, more likely to regularly take NSAIDs, and less likely to eat foods with fiber or get intense exercise. By contrast, men who ate more chicken and fish were less likely to smoke or take NSAIDs and more likely to get vigorous exercise. After accounting for these other factors that can influence the risk of diverticulitis, red meat was still associated with higher odds of developing the bowel disorder. Each daily serving of red meat was associated with an 18 percent increased risk, the study found. Unprocessed meats like beef, pork and lamb were associated with a greater risk than processed meats like bacon or sausage. It’s possible the higher cooking temperatures typically used to prepare unprocessed meats may influence the composition of bacteria in the gut or inflammatory activity, though the exact reason for the increased risk tied to these foods is unknown, the researchers note. About 76 percent of mothers said they took vitamin D themselves, and most of them preferred daily supplements to longer-acting versions taken less often. Overall, nearly nine in 10 women said they would prefer to take supplements themselves rather than give drops to their babies. Women who didn’t give babies vitamin D most often cited safety concerns, the survey found. One limitation of the study is that it included mostly white mothers, and the findings might not apply to women of other racial or ethnic groups or with a high risk of vitamin D deficiency, the authors note in the Annals of Family Medicine. Still, the findings highlight the need to educate new parents about vitamin D and make sure breastfeeding mothers take supplements themselves or give babies drops, said Dr. Lydia Furman, a researcher at Case Western Reserve University and Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. “Infants can only receive adequate vitamin D if their mothers receive adequate vitamin D and thus there is adequate vitamin D in their breast milk, or if they are supplemented,” Furman, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. Some infant formulas may contain enough vitamin D to make drops unnecessary. But babies who consume both breast milk and formula may not get enough vitamin D and still need drops or mothers who take supplements. Many women who breastfeed incorrectly believe that this gives babies all the nutrients they need, said Dr. Carol Wagner of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. (rtr)

Breastfed babies still need extra vitamin D

MANY breastfed infants may not get enough vitamin D because their mothers prefer not to give babies supplement drops, a study suggests. Pediatricians recommend that mothers exclusively breastfeed infants until at least six months of age because it can reduce babies’ risk of ear and respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome, allergies, childhood obesity and diabetes. Because breast milk typically doesn’t contain enough vitamin D to help infants develop healthy bones, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises nursing mothers to give their babies daily supplements of 400 IU (international units) of vitamin D. As an alternative, women can take vitamin D supplements themselves – typically 4,000 to 6,000 IU daily – to give babies enough in breast milk so that drops aren’t needed. The research team surveyed 184 breastfeeding mothers, including 44 mothers who also gave their babies formula in addition to breast milk. Altogether, just 55 percent of the women said they gave their babies vitamin D drops and only 42 percent supplemented with the recommended 400 IU. “Many mothers were not aware of the need for vitamin D supplementation or their physician had not recommended supplementation,” said senior study author Dr. Tom Thacher, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “Others believed that breast milk had all the needed nutrition, and some mentioned the inconvenience of giving a supplement or their poor experience of giving a supplement to previous children,” Thacher added by email. With the addition of heavy equipment and personnel, Eka Merthawan is optimistic there will be no longer accumulation of waste along the beaches in Badung. “Collection and transportation of the waste is carried out by different officers. Transportation Agency Head promises to give response next April

DENPASAR - Hundreds of taxi drivers coalesced into the members of the Alliance of Bali Transport Driver (Alstar-B) came again to rally to the office of the governor of Bali, on Tuesday (Jan. 10). Prior to coming to the governor’s office, they first took action at the north of Dewa Ruci roundabouts.

The demand of the Alstar-B remains the same, namely asking the government to block the online application-based taxi services. In this case, they include Grab and Uber Taxi. Alstar-B was received by the Head of Bali Transportation Agency I Gusti Agung Ngurah Sudarsana as well as the Head of Bali Infocom and Statistics Agency I Nyoman Sujaya in front of the office of the Bali governor. Responding to the demand of the Alstar-B, the Head of the Bali Transportation Agency I Gusti Agung Ngurah Sudarsana promised to give response until April. It is the end of the extension period of the dissemination for the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation No.32/2016 on the Implementation of Human Passenger with Non-Route Vehicle (Ministerial Regulation No. 32—Ed) made since last October 2016. “We’ve been preparing some things related to the dissemination. Nevertheless, your presence reminds us of always knowing the progress of the online taxi. We will remain to hold your commitment until April in accordance with the order of the Minister of Transportation to do dissemination,” he stated that was responded with dissatisfaction of the demonstrators. YANGON - A special envoy of Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi will begin top-level talks in Bangladesh on Wednesday, as the United Nations said the Rohingya crisis prompted 65,000 people to flee Myanmar for Bangladesh in the past three months. Kyaw Tin, Myanmar’s deputy minister of foreign affairs, will make a three-day visit to the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, in a rare diplomatic foray to tackle the biggest challenge facing Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi’s nine-month old administration. TOKYO - Asian shares rose to two-month highs on Wednesday as investors looked to President-elect Donald Trump’s news conference later in the day for clues on his policies on taxes, fiscal spending, international trade and currencies. The Soviet-built Liaoning aircraft carrier, returning from exercises in the South China Sea, was not trespassing in Taiwan’s territorial waters but entered its air defence identification zone (ADIZ) in the southwest, Taiwan’s defence ministry said. As a result Taiwan scrambled jets and navy ships to “surveil and control” the passage of the Chinese ships through the narrow body of water separating Taiwan and China, Taiwan defence ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi said. Taiwanese military aircraft and ships have been deployed to follow the carrier group, which is sailing up the west side of the median line of the strait, he said. Taiwan’s top policymaker for China affairs on Wednesday urged Beijing to resume dialogue with Taipei, after official communication channels were halted by Beijing from June. “I want to emphasise our government has sufficient capability to protect our national security. U.S. says might not shoot down North Korean ICBM, eying intel

WASHINGTON - The U.S. military might monitor a North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test and gather intelligence rather than destroy it, as long as the launch did not pose a threat, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Tuesday. North Korea declared on Sunday it could test-launch an ICBM at any time from any location set by leader Kim Jong Un, saying a hostile U.S. policy was to blame for its arms development. “If the missile is threatening, it will be intercepted. If it’s not threatening, we won’t necessarily do so,” Carter said in his final news briefing before President Barack Obama’s administration leaves office on Jan. 20. “Because it may be more to our advantage to, first of all, save our interceptor inventory, and, second, to gather intelligence from the flight, rather than do that (intercept the ICBM) when it’s not threatening.” The top U.S. military officer, Marine General Joseph Dunford, who will stay in his role as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, concurred with Carter at the event but did not enter into specifics. Carter’s language left open the possibility of U.S. military action in any scenario. Carter’s remarks came just over a week after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump vowed that North Korea would never fulfill its threat to test an ICBM. Trump said in a Jan. 2 tweet: “It won’t happen!”

Preventing an ICBM test is far easier said than done, and Trump has given no indication of how he might roll back North Korea’s weapons programs after he takes office, something successive U.S. administrations, both Democratic and Republican, have failed to do. A 2016 assessment released by the Pentagon’s weapons testing office on Tuesday said that U.S. ground-based interceptors meant to knock out any incoming ICBM still had low reliability, giving the system itself a limited capability of shielding the United States. Once fully developed, a North Korean ICBM could threaten the continental United States, which is around 9,000 km (5,500 miles) from the North. ICBMs have a minimum range of about 5,500 km (3,400 miles), but some are designed to travel 10,000 km (6,200 miles) or farther. Former U.S. officials and other experts have said the United States essentially had two options when it came to trying to curb North Korea’s fast-expanding nuclear and missile programs - negotiate or take military action. Neither path offers certain success and the military option is fraught with huge dangers, especially for Japan and South Korea, U.S. allies in close proximity to North Korea. ‘Miracle Man’ Jacobs to challenge unbeaten Golovkin

NEW YORK - Undefeated middleweight slugger Gennady Golovkin will put four world championship belts on the line March 18 against WBA champion Daniel Jacobs, who said on Tuesday that he relished another chance to beat the odds. Golovkin of Kazakhstan is 36-0 with 33 knockouts but Jacobs, known as “The Miracle Man” after winning his battle with bone cancer, is keen for the Madison Square Garden clash. “The creator has positioned my life to be an inspiration to so many people throughout the world. So many people are affected by cancer,” Brooklyn’s Jacobs told reporters. “The fact that I can overcome ... winning this fight will take everything to the next level.”

While Golovkin, with knockout power in both hands, has been invincible, Jacobs has earned respect for his courage and perseverance as well as for pugilistic skills that have led to a 32-1 record with 29 stoppages. In May 2011, Jacobs was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer and was left partially paralyzed. After radiation treatments, surgery to remove a tumor wrapped around his spine and arduous rehabilitation, he returned to boxing in late 2012. Two years later, Jacobs stopped Jarrod Fletcher in five rounds to win the WBA middleweight title, and has finished off his last dozen opponents within the distance. BOLIVIA - Sebastien Loeb won the eighth stage of the Dakar Rally and recaptured the lead from Peugeot team mate Stephane Peterhansel on Tuesday as the Frenchmen led the field back into Argentina from Bolivia. The timed element of the stage from the high plains of Uyuni down to Salta was again shortened due to the bad weather that has made life difficult since the weekend. Peterhansel, who led by one minute 57 seconds overnight, ended the day one minute 38 seconds behind the nine times world rally champion, who won his third stage of this year’s event. It might have been more if Loeb, who started after his team mate,

had not suffered a puncture on the Argentine side of the border. “I tried really hard because today was a stage like the ones I like, with some fast roads, whereas tomorrow is more desert-like with dunes,” said Loeb. “I wanted to try to make a gap today but finally I had a puncture on the last part of the stage so I lost a few minutes to change the wheel,” he added. “At the moment the fight seems to be between me and Stephane, but I think the two next days will be very, very tough and anything can happen there.” The rally, which finishes in Buenos Aires on Saturday, is famed as one of the toughest endurance
