Hollywood set for Globes after website ‘winner’ glitch

The films were briefly posted on the Globes website as winning the best drama and best musical/comedy film awards, before the captions were taken down, according to industry journal Variety. A spokesman said the films were chosen “randomly” from nominees’ lists as Web technicians fine-tuned the website ahead of the show, and that the captions should not have been live. (afp)

Wild Gecko motorcycle gang

Robs 31 people and takes action across counties

DENPASAR – The sub-directorate of Crime and Violence Team 3, of the Bali Police Criminal Investigation Unit continues to develop the case of the Tokkek Liar (wild gecko) motorcycle gang (20 member). Initial results of the interrogation of gang leader, Yp, yielded his confessing to having committed 31 robberies in Denpasar, Klungkung, Gianyar and Tabanan. As of Saturday (Jan 10), police have arrested 11 members of the motorcycle gang, including Yp., and one member who was charged with selling the stolen goods. “Our investigation unit is intensifying the development of the case and collecting data about the offenders and the number of crime scenes involved,” said the Bali Police officer. As a result of examinations, the motorcycle gang members are known to be an association of students from several schools in Bali and even East Java. “Since they are still considered minors, we cannot give explicit information about them,” he said. According to gang leader, Yp,

they have used the same method of robbing 31 people, namely by hampering the movement of the victims at each crime scene. These muggings took place 17 times in Denpasar, 9 times in Klungkung, twice in Gianyar, and 3 times in Tabanan “We are still hunting for the two other perpetrators from Klungkung, who have the initials Sg. and Jr. respectively” said the officer who requested anonymity. As for the process of investigation, the band of robbers will

be detained for some time, as the investigators plan to deal with each crime scene, case by case. Trials will also be conducted for each crime scene, each requiring a separate verdict. Police suspected that the motorcycle gang functioned as a syndicate, based on the division of roles within the gang that included thieves, distributors of stolen goods, and intermediaries. According to the suspect with initials G.S. from Karangasem, his role was to sell the goods as

their children. According to him, the incident was absolutely the fault of both children as well as their parents. On that account, this case should be handled by involving all parties. “Let us not let other children in Bali be poisoned with this kind of crime,” he said. The instructions of Bali Police Chief, Benny Mokalu, to crack down on motorcycle gangs was immediately followed up by the Sub-directorate of Crime and Violence Team 3, Bali Police Criminal Investigation Unit. On Friday (Jan 9), the team raided the headquarters of the motorcycle gang on Jalan Tjokroaminoto Gang Swari, West Denpasar. Of the 20 members of the gang, police confiscated four perpetrators with the initials: Bg., 15, D.W., 15, A.P, 14, and D.K., 15 and gang leader Y.P,16. (kmb36)

Negara Public Market -river filled with garbage NEGARA - Apparently the clean river program (Prokasih) is not functioning at maximum capacity. A number of rivers, especially those near resettlements are still filthy and filled with garbage including a stream from the Lampah River that divides the Negara Public Market, Friday (Jan 9). The river’s banks are filled with garbage all the way down to the river. Most of the waste consists of plastic and has kindled complaints from residents around the Satria neighborhood, Pendem village. Other than garbage, animal carcasses can also be found in the pile of garbage. Allegedly the garbage was accidentally dumped into the river. One of the residents living along the river, Andik Prasetyo, 30, said that the pile of garbage had stagnated in the river for four days. Aside from looking shabby, it also exuded a strong stench. Local residents also often smelt the stench that makes them uncomfortable. According to residents, the gar-

bage stagnated because the floodgate was not opened. By and large, when the water was high, the floodgate is opened. The garbage was dragged downstream when it rained some time ago. On the other hand, the hamlet chief of Satria, I Ketut Parwata, told reporters that his party had no time to check the conditions of the river that passes through the Negara Public Market. According to him, it is a rain-fed river. So, when the water is stagnant, the garbage is left on the dried riverbed. When the river is filled with water, the floodgate are opened, and the subak downstream often complains because the garbage drifs into the subak irrigation channel. The Head of Environment, Sanitation and Landscaping Agency (LHKP) of Jembrana, I Wayan Darwin, said that his party would coordinate with relevant parties to resolve the issue. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Selfie sticks: Tourist convenience or purely narcissi-stick?

NEW YORK — Selfies at tourist attractions are nothing new. But until recently, if you wanted a perfectly composed picture of yourself with Times Square or the Colosseum in the background, you might have asked a passer-by to take the photo. Now, though, relatively new gadgets called selfie sticks make it easy to take your own wide-angled self-portraits or group shots. Fans say the expandable rods, which allow users to hold their cellphones a few feet away, are the ultimate convenience: no more bothering passers-by to take pictures, no more fretting about strangers taking lousy shots or running off with a pricey iPhone. But some travelers bemoan the loss of that small interaction that came with politely asking a local to help preserve a memory. And critics express outright hatred of selfie sticks as obnoxious symbols of self-absorption. They even have a derisive name for them, playing on

the narcissistic behavior they think the sticks encourage: narcissi-stick. Sarah Kinling of Baltimore said she was approached “17 times” by vendors selling selfie sticks at the Colosseum in Rome. “They’re the new fanny pack — the quickest way to spot a tourist,” she said. “The more I saw them in use, the more I saw how much focus people were putting on selfies, and not turning around to see what they were there to see.” When Kinling wanted a photo of herself with her sister and sister-inlaw, she asked strangers to take the shot. “Even when the other person didn’t speak English, you hold your camera up and make the motion and they understand,” she said.

But some travelers say it’s better to stage your own vacation photos. Andrea Garcia asked a passer-by to take her photo in Egypt and later realized he’d zoomed in on her face, cutting out the pyramids behind her. “I couldn’t really be mad at him — he wasn’t my photographer, I didn’t pay him,” she said. The experience made her appreciate the selfie sticks she sees tourists using at 1 World Trade near her office in Lower Manhattan. “Take control of your image!” she says. Selfie sticks are just starting to show up at attractions in the U.S., but they’re ubiquitous in many destinations overseas, from Dubai’s skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. A soccer sta-

dium in London, White Hart Lane, has even banned them because they obstruct other fans’ views. The Four Seasons Hotel in Houston started making them available to guests last week, “similar to the way many hotels provide umbrellas,” said hotel spokeswoman Laura Pettitt. The sticks range in price from $5 to $50. Simpler models merely grip the phone, so users must trigger the shot with a self-timer on the camera. More sophisticated versions either use Bluetooth technology or connect the phone to the stick with a cord, with a button on the grip triggering the shot. Jasmine Brett Stringer of Minneapolis writes a lifestyles blog called “Carpe Diem with Jasmine” and uses selfie sticks to record her videos. “A friend brought one back from Dubai and I said, ‘I’ve got to get one,’” she said. Now she doesn’t

have to rely on others to help shoot her work. The sticks are also an improvement over hand-held selfies because they let you shoot “at better angles, avoid the awkward arm reach and the dreadful halfface shot.” Megan Marrs of Boston, who writes a travel blog called Vanishing Balloons, thought the sticks were ridiculous when she saw them on a trip to South Korea last fall. “It seemed so vain and silly,” said Marrs. But she bought one to bring home as a gift, ended up trying it herself and became a fan. “I don’t love intruding on other people’s experience, asking them to take my picture — they’re there to enjoy their time, too,” she said. “Sometimes I feel silly — one more tourist taking a selfie in front of the Colosseum — but I’m more comfortable doing it myself than asking someone else.” (ap)

To revive Pejeng tourism, local artists empowered GIANYAR - Known to have many tourism potentials, either of nature, the art or ancient relics, does not necessarily make Pejeng village, Tampaksiring, into excellent tourist object of Gianyar. Even, as companion to Ubud tourist attraction, this old village has not been touched by tourism sector. In order to revive the hidden cultural heritages, every full moon or every month is performed a show entitled “Cultural Wonders of the Royal Pejeng Performance” at the Agung Soma Negara Palace, Pejeng. Senior figure of the royal palace, Cokorda Widiarsa Pemayun, said that local artists were alternately involved in the performance held once a month or every full moon at the Agung Soma Negara Palace, Pejeng. “It is an effort to empower the artists owned by Pejeng in the performing arts,” he said In the show on Monday night (Jan 5), dozens of foreign travelers were amazed when watching the performance of classical arts like psalmody chanting, puppet, wayang wong (human puppet) and Kecak with the storyline entitled “the Death of Kumbakarna” by local artist troupe and SMP Santi Yoga junior high school Pejeng. “Such performance is routinely held every full moon with special mask show and Legong in accordance with the potential of Pejeng village,” he said. Discovery of the potential and

preservation of the art and culture would be carried out at all villages in Gianyar County, so that it could be developed as a tourist attraction. To realize the idea, Gianyar government established a creative team having the task to discover and pack the potential of each village and realize it in the form of performance on an ongoing basis. Meanwhile, the headman of Pejeng, Cok Agung Kusumayudha Pemayun, explained if the arts of Pejeng village had revived. As a result, it would be easier to bring in travelers to Pejeng village because Pejeng village was the crossing path of travelers visiting Batur, Kintamani. “It just needs to direct it. Iran parliament session suspended amid shouting matches

TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian parliament session descended into chaos Sunday as several hard-line lawmakers disrupted a speech by a moderate colleague criticizing the long-term house arrest of two opposition leaders. Parliamentarian Ali Motahari was speaking out in an open session on the detention orders against Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi. The pair have been held under house arrest without charges since 2011 over their role in the widespread protests that followed the 2009 presidential elections. “Continuation of the house arrest without judicial verdict is a violation of the constitution. I consider it harmful (to the country),” Motahari told the house.

Military divers were trying to follow the pings to the boxes, believed to be on the floor of the Java Sea about 30 metres (100 feet) underwater, S.B Supriyadi, a director with the National Search and Rescue Agency told AFP. The hunt came after the mangled tail of the Airbus jet was lifted from the sea on Saturday. “The ping was detected about one kilometre (0.6 miles) east of the tail,” Supriyadi told AFP at the search headquarters of Panglakun Bun. The Indonesian meteorological agency has said stormy weather likely caused the Airbus A320200 to crash. But a definitive answer is impossible without the black boxes, which should contain the pilots’ final words as well as various flight data. Supriyadi and other officials involved in the search said they were confident the pings were from the black boxes, describing the signals as strong. Supriyadi said an object believed to be the main body of the plane had also been detected close to the area from where the pings were emanating. “We are now trying to check by sending our divers,” he added. Arsonists attack German paper that published French cartoons BERLIN — Police in Germany have detained two men suspected of an arson attack early Sunday against a newspaper that republished the cartoons of French weekly Charlie Hebdo. The newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost said on its website the overnight arson attack destroyed several files in its archive, but didn’t injure anyone. Hamburg police said it had detained the two young men near the newspaper building. Police spokeswoman Karina Sadowsky told The Associated Press several stones and a Molotov cocktail were found in the newspaper’s archive in the basement of the building. She didn’t identify or give any further details about the suspects. A spokesman for the Hamburg

PANGKALAN BUN - Indonesian authorities said Sunday strong signals were emanating from the crucial black box recorders of an AirAsia plane that crashed into the sea two weeks ago, killing all 162 people on board. Military divers were trying to follow the pings to the boxes, believed to be on the floor of the Java Sea about 30 metres (100 feet) underwater, S.B Supriyadi, a director with the National Search and Rescue Agency told AFP. The hunt came after the mangled tail of the Airbus jet was lifted from the sea on Saturday. “The ping was detected about one kilometre (0.6 miles) east of the tail,” Supriyadi told AFP at the search headquarters of Panglakun Bun. The Indonesian meteorological agency has said stormy weather likely caused the Airbus A320200 to crash. But a definitive answer is impossible without the black boxes, which should contain the pilots’ final words as well as various flight data. Supriyadi and other officials involved in the search said they were confident the pings were from the black boxes, describing the signals as strong. Supriyadi said an object believed to be the main body of the plane had also been detected close to the area from where the pings were emanating. “We are now trying to check by sending our divers,” he added. The search efforts, which have involved US, Chinese and other foreign naval ships, has recovered just 48 bodies. Supriyadi said many of the bodies were believed to be trapped in the cabin, so reaching that part of the wreckage was also a top priority. All but seven of those on board were Indonesian. Iran parliament session suspended amid shouting matches

TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian parliament session descended into chaos Sunday as several hard-line lawmakers disrupted a speech by a moderate colleague criticizing the long-term house arrest of two opposition leaders. Parliamentarian Ali Motahari was speaking out in an open session on the detention orders against Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi. The pair have been held under house arrest without charges since 2011 over their role in the widespread protests that followed the 2009 presidential elections. “Continuation of the house arrest without judicial verdict is a violation of the constitution. I consider it harmful (to the country),” Motahari told the house.

Several hard-line lawmakers then walked to the podium shouting, “death to seditionists” and “death to hypocrites,” and prevented Motahari from continuing his speech. Parliamentary security ordered journalists out of the chamber and vice-speaker Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard adjourned the session; it was resumed 25 minutes later. Before adjourning, Aboutorabi-Fard publicly criticized Motahari for his comments. “Continuation of your speech doesn’t serve (the country’s) interests,” he said. “Maximum Islamic mercy has been applied to these individuals. Selfie sticks: Tourist convenience or purely narcissi-stick?

NEW YORK — Selfies at tourist attractions are nothing new. But until recently, if you wanted a perfectly composed picture of yourself with Times Square or the Colosseum in the background, you might have asked a passer-by to take the photo. Now, though, relatively new gadgets called selfie sticks make it easy to take your own wide-angled self-portraits or group shots. Fans say the expandable rods, which allow users to hold their cellphones a few feet away, are the ultimate convenience: no more bothering passers-by to take pictures, no more fretting about strangers taking lousy shots or running off with a pricey iPhone. But some travelers bemoan the loss of that small interaction that came with politely asking a local to help preserve a memory. And critics express outright hatred of selfie sticks as obnoxious symbols of self-absorption. They even have a derisive name for them, playing on

the narcissistic behavior they think the sticks encourage: narcissi-stick. Sarah Kinling of Baltimore said she was approached “17 times” by vendors selling selfie sticks at the Colosseum in Rome. “They’re the new fanny pack — the quickest way to spot a tourist,” she said. “The more I saw them in use, the more I saw how much focus people were putting on selfies, and not turning around to see what they were there to see.” When Kinling wanted a photo of herself with her sister and sister-inlaw, she asked strangers to take the shot. “Even when the other person didn’t speak English, you hold your camera up and make the motion and they understand,” she said.

The sticks range in price from $5 to $50. Simpler models merely grip the phone, so users must trigger the shot with a self-timer on the camera. More sophisticated versions either use Bluetooth technology or connect the phone to the stick with a cord, with a button on the grip triggering the shot. Jasmine Brett Stringer of Minneapolis writes a lifestyles blog called “Carpe Diem with Jasmine” and uses selfie sticks to record her videos. “A friend brought one back from Dubai and I said, ‘I’ve got to get one,’” she said. Wild Gecko motorcycle gang

Robs 31 people and takes action across counties

DENPASAR – The sub-directorate of Crime and Violence Team 3, of the Bali Police Criminal Investigation Unit continues to develop the case of the Tokkek Liar (wild gecko) motorcycle gang (20 member). Initial results of the interrogation of gang leader, Yp, yielded his confessing to having committed 31 robberies in Denpasar, Klungkung, Gianyar and Tabanan. As of Saturday (Jan 10), police have arrested 11 members of the motorcycle gang, including Yp., and one member who was charged with selling the stolen goods. “Our investigation unit is intensifying the development of the case and collecting data about the offenders and the number of crime scenes involved,” said the Bali Police officer. As a result of examinations, the motorcycle gang members are known to be an association of students from several schools in Bali and even East Java. “Since they are still considered minors, we cannot give explicit information about them,” he said. According to gang leader, Yp,

they have used the same method of robbing 31 people, namely by hampering the movement of the victims at each crime scene. These muggings took place 17 times in Denpasar, 9 times in Klungkung, twice in Gianyar, and 3 times in Tabanan “We are still hunting for the two other perpetrators from Klungkung, who have the initials Sg. and Jr. respectively” said the officer who requested anonymity. As for the process of investigation, the band of robbers will

be detained for some time, as the investigators plan to deal with each crime scene, case by case. Trials will also be conducted for each crime scene, each requiring a separate verdict. Police suspected that the motorcycle gang functioned as a syndicate, based on the division of roles within the gang that included thieves, distributors of stolen goods, and intermediaries. According to the suspect with initials G.S. from Karangasem, his role was to sell the goods as

Negara Public Market -river filled with garbage NEGARA - Apparently the clean river program (Prokasih) is not functioning at maximum capacity. A number of rivers, especially those near resettlements are still filthy and filled with garbage including a stream from the Lampah River that divides the Negara Public Market, Friday (Jan 9). The river’s banks are filled with garbage all the way down to the river. Most of the waste consists of plastic and has kindled complaints from residents around the Satria neighborhood, Pendem village. Other than garbage, animal carcasses can also be found in the pile of garbage. Allegedly the garbage was accidentally dumped into the river. One of the residents living along the river, Andik Prasetyo, 30, said that the pile of garbage had stagnated in the river for four days. Aside from looking shabby, it also exuded a strong stench. Local residents also often smelt the stench that makes them uncomfortable. According to residents, the gar-

bage stagnated because the floodgate was not opened. By and large, when the water was high, the floodgate is opened. The garbage was dragged downstream when it rained some time ago. On the other hand, the hamlet chief of Satria, I Ketut Parwata, told reporters that his party had no time to check the conditions of the river that passes through the Negara Public Market. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.
