LOS ANGELES - The galaxy far, far away was brought to life in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday for the world premiere of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” where the anticipated first screening was dedicated to the franchise’s late star, Carrie Fisher. “I want to dedicate tonight to Carrie, who is up there right now flipping me the bird, saying ‘Damn it Rian, don’t you dare make this night a solemn tribute,’” the film’s writer-director Rian Johnson said as he introduced the screening. “So let’s all have a blast tonight for Carrie,” he said. The film ends with a dedication to Fisher, who plays Princess Leia. The actress died at age 60 last December after completing her work on “The Last Jedi”. Her character, now known as General Leia Organa, leader of the Resistance, plays a key role in the film.
Walt Disney Co.’s “The Last Jedi”, out in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, follows 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and picks up with the Resistance fighting off Supreme Leader Snoke’s First Order which is trying to take control of the galaxy. Rey (Daisy Ridley), meanwhile, tries to convince Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to join the Resistance fight and bring a spark of hope to the rebels against Snoke’s tyrannical rule. The film explores themes of the battle to find a balance in the Force, the supernatural energy that runs through the fictional “Star Wars” galaxy. Reviews of the film are embargoed until

The star-studded ensemble cast, including Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Adam Driver, Andy Serkis and Hamill, walked the red carpet at the premiere, surrounded by droids and Stormtroopers. SYDNEY - Australian actor Geoffrey Rush said on Friday he had filed a defamation lawsuit against Sydney’s Daily Telegraph newspaper after it published a report about a complaint alleging inappropriate conduct. The newspaper article last month said an Australian theatre company had received a complaint about “inappropriate behaviour” following the production of King Lear two years ago in which Rush was the star. Rush has denied any wrongdoing and said he was never told of the complaint at the time. Details of the complaint have not been
made public. “They have splashed spurious claims with bombastic titles on their front pages,” the Oscarwinning actor said in a brief press conference in Melbourne. “This has created irreparable damage to my reputation,” he added. “This situation is intolerable and I must now seek vindication of my good name through the courts in Australia.” The Daily Telepgrah Editor Chris Dore said in a statement to Reuters that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp-run newspaper will defend itself. “The Daily Telegraph accurately
reported the Sydney Theatre Company received a complaint alleging that Mr Geoffrey Rush had engaged in inappropriate behaviour. We will defend our position in court,” Dore said. Rush’s lawsuit said he was seeking damages and a restraint on further publication on the matter. Last week, Rush voluntarily stepped down as president of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television until the matter is resolved. More snow to fall across UK with travel disruption expected
LONDON - Large parts of the UK will continue to see heavy snowfall on Sunday as temperatures drop and forecasters warn of widespread travel disruption. An amber weather warning will remain in place for central areas until 6pm, while up to 28cm (11in) of snow was recorded in Wales. Rain, sleet and snow are expected to continue for the rest of the day and the Met Office said rural communities could be cut off as roads become hazardous. Significant traffic was reported in Leicestershire, Worcestershire and Bedfordshire, and snow fell heavily in Birmingham city centre. Police forces in Wales and across the Midlands urged motorists not to
travel unless absolutely necessary as they dealt with an increased number of calls. A northbound section of the M1 was closed in Leicestershire due to numerous vehicles being stranded.Flights were suspended at Birmingham airport while the runway was cleared, leaving passengers facing delays. Other airports advised customers to leave extra time for their journey and check with airlines for delays and cancellations before travelling. The Met Office said: “Road, rail and air travel delays are likely, as
well as stranding of vehicles and public transport cancellations.” Parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland were expected to be spared snow and to see a bright, clear day on Sunday, with very cold temperatures. Only a few places in the south were expected to have double-figure temperatures, with 10C (50F) in Plymouth. Heavy snow across the middle of the country was expected to lighten as the day progressed, with skies clearing by Monday morning. The Met Office warned that many areas would start next week with very cold temperatures and severe frost, presenting a risk of ice. The amber alert was accompa-
nied by a yellow warning of strong winds of up to 80mph (129km/h) on Sunday for parts of eastern England, London and the south-east, the south-west and Wales, which could cause a short-term loss of power and other services, as well as transport disruption. Highways England issued advice for drivers travelling through the north-west and north-east of England and the Midlands to check forecasts and road conditions before they travel. Motorists should prepare for any eventuality by carrying “warm clothing, food, drink, required medication, boots, shovel and a torch”, it said. Highways England said traffic had
stopped on the M1 northbound between J16 and J17 due to numerous breakdowns and stranded vehicles. Entrepreneurs reminded not to lay off employees
SINGARAJA - Hoteliers and restaurateurs in Bali are expected not to immediately issue the policy of employee layoff in the middle of the decrease of tourist visit to Bali as the impact of Mount Agung eruption. The government has so far been trying to convince foreign parties to convey that Bali remains safe to be visited. This was expressed by Deputy Governor of Bali, Ketut Sudikerta, when visiting Buleleng on Friday (Dec. 8).
Sudikerta further said the decline in foreign tourists visiting Bali has a negative impact on hotel occupancy and restaurant visit. Amid this situation, tourism entrepreneurs on the Island of the Gods should not immediately issue a decision of layoffs against their employees. Conversely, employers should make policies to regulate the schedule and the existing workload. Meanwhile, regarding the farmland affected due to the distribution of volcanic ashes and inundation of cold lava, Sudikerta claimed to have coordinated with related party to resolve the problem. “Do not im-
mediately lay off employees, and it is better to arrange the working hours of employees. It can be done by reducing the provision of services, and we hope it will not apply to the basic salary that must be paid,” he said. Similar opinion was expressed by Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana. The Mount Agung is now threatening farmers in his region. The region adjacent to Karangasem district is feared to be affected especially by the spread of volcanic ashes. He pointed out that many cultivated clove plants in the border of East ??Buleleng cannot have optimal productivity. It happens because the plants are currently in blooming stage. If the Mount Agung spews volcanic ashes, the cloves will certainly fail to bloom. If they fail to bloom, farmers will fail to harvest and result in huge losses. Actually, if there is no natural disturbance like the Mount Agung eruption, cloves in the upcoming harvest season will enter massive harvest. “We can only hope that Mount Agung will not erupt. If the eruption occurs, cloves at Madenan village and the eastern area will fail to harvest and our farmers will get nothing,” he explained. (kmb38)

Using social media to help boost tourism amidst threat of volcano
MANGUPURA - Bali has been loosing billions of rupiah a day due to the effects of the eruption of Mount Agung – particularly from the slumping tourism sector. Mount Agung is notoriously hard to predict in terms of volcanic activity so nobody knows how long such conditions will last. The financial losses encured by Bali due to Mount Agung eruption reaches billions of rupiahs each day, especially the tourism sector. Special characteristic of Mount Agung makes this condition difficult to be predicted how long it will last. According to Head of Bali Recreation Entrepreneurs Association, Indha Trimafo Yudha, social media should be taken advantage of to promote tourism in Bali in order to encourage visitors to come to Bali. “Recreational sites remain quite and hotel occupancy rates are down to 10 percent in many parts of the island. November and early December have seen very few tourists. Around 10 days before Christmas is usually a peak time for tourism, but so far, the number of visitors are down 80-90 percent”, she said. Foreign tourists tend to plan their trip long in advance, whereas domestic tourists may plan their holidays at the last minute. So given the current uncertain conditions of Mount Agung, it , even massive amounts of tourism
promotion may not be enough to convince foreign tourists to book their holiday in Bali. Using social media to show people that Bali is safe is one way to help recover the tourism sector. Testimonies from tourists can also be an effective way of convincing people to come to Bali. “There are even tourists who specifically want to get a closer look at Mount Agung for themselves- though of course form a safe distance. It is not surprising as this is a rare historical event that they can witness first hand”, explained Yudha. We are asking all related parties to lend a hand in this effort. “We should not put on airs or remain too theoretical about how to increase tourism”, she added. Currently, many tourism businesses are restructuring their operations so as to remain in business. Reserve funds are needed, however tourism tends not to have such funds set aside. “ We tend to re-invest our profits. We need the help of the government to motivate guests to come to Bali”, she added. Yudha added that the eruption of Mount Agung should be taken advantage of to look for ways for Bali to generate income from sectors other than tourism such as small and medium enterprise (SMEs) and small and medium industry (SMIs). BANGLI - Hotel occupancy rates and restaurant customers have declined drastically in Kintamani since Mount Agung, Karangasem erupted last November. If such conditions persist there could be major layoffs in the tourism sector. Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Bangli, Ketut Mardjana, said on Friday (Dec. 8) that the eruption of Mt. Agung in November has had a significant negative impact on tourism in Bangli. Lake View Hotel and Restaurant for example is almost always crowded with tourist, but for the last few weeks has become deserted. Before the eruption this hotel in Penelokan had average occupancy rates of 75 percent, but now occupancy rates are just 5 percent. “Likewise, the Klumpu that is usually full of European guests is now empty”, he explained. Mardjana however added that despite the drastic decrease in visitors, so far no hotels or restaurants have shut down or laid off employees. Instead employees have been working shorter
shifts or have taken time off in turns. Nevertheless, there is a very real possibility of mass layoffs and businesses closing down if there continues to be a lack of guests, added Mardjana. The tourism sector is not the only one that would be affected, farmers for example face a direct threat if their produce is no longer in demand. In order to prevent loss of employment, serious measures need to be taken now to encourage tourists to visit Kintamani. Hoteliers and restaurateurs as well as the government including the Ministry of Tourism, provincial and district governments need to spread the word that Kintamani and Bali in general remain safe to visit. One way of doing this is by inviting foreign media to convey the fact that there are many places in Bali that are perfectly safe visit. “This needs to be made known to people. If possible the government could invited consulates to meet with the governor as they did before the eruption when the warning level was still on alert”, said Mardjana. (kmb40)

Bosnian museum of wartime childhood aims to go global, wins top prize
SARAJEVO - In just a year, a small Bosnian museum dedicated to the experience of growing up during the Balkan wars has opened its doors, won a best European museum prize and decided to go global. The War Childhood Museum in Sarajevo, a trove of memorabilia from Bosnians whose childhood was traumatized by the 1990s war, has started collecting personal items from children affected by other wars, such as those in Syria and Ukraine. The idea was born out of the experience of the museum’s founder,
Jasminko Halilovic, and has become a long-term project to create the world’s largest archive on the impact of war on children. “Speaking about the war from a child’s perspective is the most powerful anti-war message,” 27-yearold Halilovic told Reuters. He said that giving away personal items also helped children cope with the trauma of war. The Bosnian 1992-95 war was Europe’s bloodiest since World War Two. The museum has collected more than 4,000 exhibits donated by children who endured it, and over 150 hours of a video archive
of oral history interviews. Halilovic said the items from other conflicts could be put on display next year. Among the artefacts is a perfume bottle donated by 10-year-old Syrian girl Yehya from Homs. It belonged to her father, who was killed going to work, and its scent used to bring back memories in
Lebanon, where she found a refuge. “The notion that we have such museum in Bosnia opened a window of hope to the Syrian children in Lebanon that the war in Syria will also come to an end and they could make something similar,” Amina Krvavac, the museum’s executive director, said.
The museum’s current exhibit showcases around 50 items hanging from the ceiling, such as a bright blue “dress of spite” worn by a Sarajevo girl to defy snipers, or ballet shoes in which another danced “to disconnect from reality”, set on simple white pedestals against a minimalist grey backdrop. The Council of Europe this week picked the museum for its annual prize among 40 candidates as “a truly inspiring example of a grassroots initiative”. The judges praised its potential to become “a powerful selfsustained model of civic initiative” and said it offered an example that could be replicated in war zones worldwide. The project encountered political obstructionism, a protracted struggle to secure adequate space and lack of institutional support until it turned to a combination of crowdfunding, international aid and voluntarism. Lack of tourist visit, management asked to repair object
TABANAN — The eruption of Mount Agung has had a tremendous impact on Bali relying on tourism. So far, the number of tourist visits at several attractions decreased as soon as Mount Agung showed its volcanic activity. However, the lack of tourist visits does not necessarily make the management remain silent. In Tabanan district, the management decided to improve the existing facilities. Head of the Tabanan Tourism Office, I Made Yasa, when asked for his confirmation admitted that tourism sector of Bali, including in Tabanan, is hit with the current natural conditions. Admittedly, tourist visits, especially foreign tourists, to Bali plummeted extraordinarily. This condition occurred all over Bali including the favorite tourist destinations. “It is a matter of natural factor, we can only surrender,” said Yasa on Wednesday (Dec. 6). Admittedly, the tourists especially for foreign tourists are very much dependent on security factor. Mount Agung eruption has made tourists afraid to visit Bali, although the condition of Bali in general is safe. Moreover, the Tabanan is quite far from Mount Agung. This condition is worsened by the closure of Ngurah Rai Airport due to volcanic ashes resulting in a tremendous impact. Foreign tourists are afraid to come to Bali. In addition, the airlines also cancel their flights to Bali. “As the name implies that foreign tourists arrive through the airport, if the flight is closed, no foreign tourists can come,” he said.
He said there is still a glimmer of hope for tourism sector of Bali, especially Tabanan. He hoped in the yearend holidays, Christmas and New Year, along with school holidays after the semester final exam, there will be a lot of domestic tourists coming to Tabanan. The existence of three main attractions is expected to remain attractive for domestic tourists to come to Tabanan. He just hoped the weather condition will be getting better to avoid high waves. “Hopefully, domestic tourists will come and the eruption of Mount Agung will pass by quickly,” he said. Nevertheless, his management keeps trying to attract tourists to come to Tabanan. For instance, the promotion is continuously made through website, including internet via Google that tourist attractions in Tabanan are safe to be visited. “We still do promotions through leaflet and the internet,” he said. Behind the current condition and deterioration occurred, he said it is the moment or opportunity for the management of tourist attractions to repair their objects. Thus, when the tourism sector recovered, the attractions are ready and there are new things to be offered for the convenience of tourists. Seven charms becoming the tourism icon should be encouraged so that tourists are happy to come to Bali especially to Tabanan. The current condition is the opportunity for us to do arrangement and repair of tourist object so that they will be better and ready to accept the arrival of tourists,” he concluded. (kmb28)

Based on latest data, the refugee here reaches 1,930 people consisting of children, teenagers and elderly that come from several hamlets at Besakih and Pempatan. They occupy hamlet hall, Yadnya Market and tent or temporary shelter built independently by refugees. Although it is only a temporary shelter, refugees organize their refuge creatively. is also equipped with alley name. Besides, a number of refugees also paint their tent walls to beautify their refuge so as to become pleasing to the eyes. Meanwhile, elementary school students are learning to play gamelan in order to fill their spare time when coming home from school. A resident from Palak hamlet, Besakih, I Gusti Ngurah Alit, expressed there are indeed some refugees making creativity by decorating their dwellings in order to look more beautiful. He said it is meant to make them more comfortable in the evacuation and their tents look neater and cleaner when viewed. “In addition to painting tent walls, they also decorate their front area with ornamental plants. I think it is very positive, although it is only a temporary shelter. However, they still want their place to look beautiful and clean,” he said. Aside from beautifying their refugee camp, he gives the opportunity to school students to play gamelan. It is used to fill their spare time outside school hours. “This gamelan instrument is brought by one of the refugees. To make the gamelan useful, I finally take the initiative to give children gamelan playing activity. Hopefully, the gamelan playing will make them no longer bored in the evacuation,” said Ngurah Alit. (nan)

Left to bar, belonging of tourist stolen MANGUPURA — Theft case occurred at Old Man Bar & Restaurant on Jalan Batu Bolong, Canggu, North Kuta. The iPhone owned by David Pierre Michael Bakker, 49, from the Netherlands, was lost. Actually, the iPhone worth IDR 15 million was placed on the table and left to the bar. The perpetrator is Yudha Purnama Jaya, 23, and he was arrested on Sunday (Nov. 26) on Jalan Batu Bolong, North Kuta. Chief of North Kuta Police, Johanes H. Widya Dharma Nainggolan, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit, Putu Ika Prabawa, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) the victim on Tuesday (Nov. 21) at 23:20 was at the scene chatting with his friend. At that time, the victim staying on Jalan Batu Mejan, Canggu, North Kuta, put his black iPhone 7 plus on the table. “At that time, a friend was there, so the victim left the desk for a moment to go to the bar. The iPhone was left on the table,” said Ika Prabawa. After that, in fact the victim’s friend left the table briefly to the bathroom. A few minutes later, the victim returned to the desk and found his iPhone to have gone. The victim immediately asked about it to his friend and it was answered if he did not know. On the incident, the victim reported the case to North Kuta police. “We immediately held crime scene investigation. Based on the testimonies of witnesses, the suspicion led to the perpetrator posing a visitor to the bar,” he said. Result of the investigation indicated if the perpetrator was tracked to be on Jalan Batu Bolong, North Kuta. Police immediately hunted him and could be arrested on Sunday at 02:00 Local Time. When interrogated, the perpetrator admitted to have stolen the iPhone 7 Plus belonging to the victim. After that, the stolen item was sold to his friend for IDR 1.2 million. AMLAPURA — Mount Agung eruption continues to increase. If on the previous day only reached two eruptions, there were eight times of eruption and 18 times of gust on Saturday (Dec. 9) starting at 00-00 to 12:00. The eruptions accompanied with a cloud of smoke reached a height of 2,000 meters. As a result, the area of Ban village, Kubu, was exposed to lapili rain. Meanwhile, volcanic ashes of Mount Agung since Saturday have reached Tembok village, Buleleng. Headman of Ban, I Wayan Potag, revealed the lapili rain in the form of ashes which is round like a bullet had made people shocked. The rain caused their zinc roof in their residence to sound. He said the drops of rain took place shortly or less than one minute. “It is like ash rain, but bigger. The shape is round like a bullet making the zinc roof to result in sounds. After being been taken and crushed, it turned into ashes. I have put it in a plastic bag so that it can be checked by the officer to make sure what it is,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Head of the Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, I Gede Suantika, explained the objects falling at Ban village located 3 km from the peak of Mount Agung is lapili. It is a volcanic material in the form of ash, but has a slightly larger size. “Lapili coming out is commonplace when volcano erupts. Later, we will make sure again, and we take samples,” explained Suantika. California firefighters make gains ahead of strong winds
VENTURA - Firefighters across Southern California made progress on Saturday battling a slew of scattered wildfires that have killed at least one person, destroyed hundreds of buildings and forced more than 200,000 people from their homes this week. As the dry Santa Ana winds that have fueled the blazes abated slightly, officials lifted evacuation orders for parts of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, and crews started getting the upper hand in containing some major fires. FRANKFURT - Three central banks, meeting on both sides of the Atlantic, will highlight the diverging fortunes of the world’s biggest economies as they head into 2018 after an exceptionally tranquil year. While the growth cycle in the United States may be close to peaking, the euro zone is just getting comfortable with its economic run and Britain is weighed down by Brexit uncertainty, suggesting that their monetary policies will be out of sync for years to come. Indeed, the U.S. Federal Reserve is all but certain to raise rates on Wednesday, likely predicting three more hikes for next year, even as the European Central Bank pledges on Thursday to maintain super-low borrowing costs and the Bank of England promises only very gradual increases over the coming years. Brazil’s PSDB picks Sao Paulo Gov. Alckmin to lead it into 2018 race
BRASILIA - The centrist Brazilian Social Democracy Party, or PSDB, elected four-time Sao Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin as its leader on Saturday, making him its most likely presidential nominee in next year’s elections. Tamba Waras Temple, a Sanctum to Invoke Recovery It is said that King of Tabanan, Cokorda Tabanan, was in serious illness. None of the royal healers could heal him. Those belonging to this temple group are the Muncaksari and the underneath Tamba Waras located at the right side of the Batukaru Temple. Geographically, the Tamba Waras Temple is located on the south slope of Mount Batukaru,
precisely at Sangketan, Penebel, Tabanan. The temple located on the same line as the Batukaru Temple sits on the altitude of about 725 meters above sea level. To get to this temple, pilgrims have to cover a distance of about 22 km from the town of Tabanan. In terms of the temple structure, the Tamba Waras Temple is also nicknamed as the warehouse of universal medicine. It is estimated to have been established in the twelfth century. Before saying prayers, all the pilgrims should first do self-purificatory rite or melukat at the sapta Ganges shower. Palestinians to snub Pence during visit over Jerusalem move
CAIRO - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not meet U.S. Vice President Mike Pence during Pence’s visit to the region this month in a snub over the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the Palestinian foreign minister said on Saturday.
Violence erupted for a third day in Gaza in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement on Wednesday, which overturned decades of U.S. policy towards the Middle East. Israeli air strikes killed two Palestinian gunmen on Saturday after militants fired rockets from the enclave into Israel on Friday, which had been declared a “day of rage” by Palestinian factions. Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem has infuriated the Arab world and upset Western allies, who say it is a blow to peace efforts and risks sparking more violence in the region. Late on Saturday, Arab foreign ministers urged the United States to abandon its decision and said the move would spur violence throughout the region. The Arab League, in a statement issued after an emergency session in Cairo, called Trump’s announcement a “dangerous violation of international law” which had no legal impact and was void. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to critics in a statement before meetings in Paris on Sunday with French President Emmanuel Macron to be followed by a meeting with European foreign ministers in Brussels. “I hear (from Europe) voices of condemnation over President Trump’s historic announcement but I have not heard any condemnation for the rocket firing against Israel that has come (after the announcement) and the awful incitement against us,” Netanyahu said.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said the Palestinians will be looking for a new peace talks broker instead of the United States and would seek a United Nations Security Council resolution over Trump’s decision. “We will seek a new mediator from our Arab brothers and the international community,” Maliki told reporters in Cairo before the Arab League meeting on Trump’s Jerusalem decision. A Turkish presidential source said Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron will work together to try to persuade the United States to reconsider the move. A possible meeting with Pence has also been turned down by Egypt’s Coptic Church, MENA state news agency reported. White House and U.S. State Department officials did not respond to requests for comment. Palestinian officials said Pence had been due to meet Abbas on Dec. 19. CAIRO - Arab foreign ministers late on Saturday urged the United States to abandon its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, saying the move would increase violence throughout the region. The announcement by President Donald Trump on Wednesday was a “dangerous violation of international law”, had no legal impact and was “void”, the Arab League said in a statement after a session attended by all its members in Cairo. Trump’s endorsement of Israel’s claim to all of Jerusalem as its capital would reverse long-standing U.S. policy that the city’s status must be decided in negotiations with the Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. “The decision has no legal effect ... it deepens tension, ignites anger and threatens to plunge region into more violence and chaos,” the Arab League said at 3 a.m. local time
after hours of meetings that began on Saturday evening. It said it would seek a U.N. Security Council resolution rejecting the U.S. move. Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said during the emergency meeting that Arab nations should consider imposing economic sanctions against the United States to prevent it moving its Israel embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. “Pre-emptive measures (must be) taken ... beginning with diplomatic measures, then political, then economic and financial sanctions,” he said, without giving specific details. The Arab League statement made no mention of economic sanctions. Arab criticism of Trump’s plan contrasted sharply with the praise Washington’s traditional Arab allies heaped on him at the beginning of his administration in January. (rtr)

Security Council and the international community to respond immediately with more decisive and concrete political and diplomatic actions in saving the Palestinians from the Israeli occupation and its collaborator, the United States of America,” Iman said. “Indonesia as the world’s largest Muslim country has the largest responsibility toward the independence
of Palestine and the management of Jerusalem,” he told reporters, adding that he hoped Indonesia would take a leading role within the OIC on the matter. “Trump has disrupted world peace. It’s terrible,” one protester, Yusri, told Reuters. The decision was “a major disaster for the Palestinian people, while the Palestinian’s own rights have been taken away for a long time,”
said Septi, a student at the rally. Violence erupted for a third day in Gaza on Saturday in response to Trump’s decision, which overturned decades of U.S. policy towards the Middle East. SOLO - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) acknowledged that there is still a lot of homework for human rights enforcement that has not been done by the government. “I realize there are still a lot of big jobs, homework concerning the enforcement of human rights that has not been completed yet, including the violation of human rights,” said President Jokowi here on Sunday. The President made the remarks during the commemoration of the 69th World Human Rights Day in Solo attended by Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yasonna H Laoly, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Chief of Staff of President Teten Masduki, special presidential staff for Communication Johan Budi Sapto Pribowo, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and other officials. Some cases of unresolved human rights violations include the 1982-1985 mysterious shootings, the forced disappearances of 1997-1998, the May 1998 riots, the Trisakti, Semanggi I and Semanggi II events and others. “This requires our work, the joint work among the central government, the regional governments and all components of society. With our joint work on human rights, we bring social justice to the people of Indonesia,” said the President. However, President Jokowi admitted that there have been many government efforts made to provide basic services for the community. “The government has distributed Indonesia Smart Cards (KIP) to 17.9 million children from poor families. Recipi-
ents of national health insurance through the distribution of the Healthy Indonesia Card (KIS) have reached more than 92.4 million beneficiaries,” added the President. In addition, there is still the fulfillment of the rights of local communities and the rights of indigenous peoples who become the government`s serious concern. “The government has given management rights to customary lands, customary forests, to local communities and indigenous peoples,” said the President. The President also appreciates the hard efforts of all those who have made a real contribution to upholding human rights principles in Indonesia, appreciating the governors, mayors and district heads who are developing “human rights cities and developing areas of human rights. “And thanks to human rights commissions and human rights activist colleagues who are constantly fighting for peoploe`s justice. Bottas shrugs off his low rating by F1 bosses
PARIS - Valtteri Bottas has shrugged off a poll of Formula One team bosses that rated the Mercedes driver in only 10th place despite him winning three races this year and ending up third in the championship. The placing was one lower than the Finn had managed with Williams in 2016. “There’s always all kind of polls and stuff,” Bottas, who joined Mercedes in January as a replacement for Nico Rosberg after the 2016 champion retired, told reporters at the governing FIA’s end-of-year prize-giving. “I don’t really think about it, if I’m under-rated or things like that. “Really what matters is how I perform on track: how many races I will be able to win in future. The main thing is within the team, that they know exactly my level of performance, that they know what
I’m capable of doing.” The Finn jokingly hoped his own team boss Toto Wolff had not voted him 10th in the poll conducted by motorsport.com. Bottas also took three pole positions and ended up on the podium 13 times but he also suffered something of a slump after the August break and in some races he was comprehensively out-performed by team mate Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton, who topped the poll by a huge margin, won nine times and took his fourth world championship. The Briton has praised his team mate for bringing a new harmony to the team after a prickly time with Rosberg and emphasised how well the pair get on. “I think as a driver I’ve definitely learned a lot. MILAN - Inter Milan stayed top of Serie A and unbeaten after 16 games after surviving their toughest test of the season by holding champions Juventus to a 0-0 draw in Turin on Saturday. Juve created more chances, but were foiled by Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic or their own poor finishing in a Derby d’Italia that was always intriguing but never quite caught fire. Cagliari survived a freak sequence of first-half injuries to draw 2-2 at home to Sampdoria, helped by an extraordinary goal where Samp goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano’s clearance hit Diego Farias and flew into the net. Inter lead the standings with 40 points from 16 games, two ahead of Napoli, who host Fiorentina on Sunday, and Juventus. Bottas shrugs off his low rating by F1 bosses
PARIS - Valtteri Bottas has shrugged off a poll of Formula One team bosses that rated the Mercedes driver in only 10th place despite him winning three races this year and ending up third in the championship. The placing was one lower than the Finn had managed with Williams in 2016. “There’s always all kind of polls and stuff,” Bottas, who joined Mercedes in January as a replacement for Nico Rosberg after the 2016 champion retired, told reporters at the governing FIA’s end-of-year prize-giving. “I don’t really think about it, if I’m under-rated or things like that. “Really what matters is how I perform on track: how many races I will be able to win in future. The main thing is within the team, that they know exactly my level of performance, that they know what
I’m capable of doing.” The Finn jokingly hoped his own team boss Toto Wolff had not voted him 10th in the poll conducted by motorsport.com. Bottas also took three pole positions and ended up on the podium 13 times but he also suffered something of a slump after the August break and in some races he was comprehensively out-performed by team mate Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton, who topped the poll by a huge margin, won nine times and took his fourth world championship. The Briton has praised his team mate for bringing a new harmony to the team after a prickly time with Rosberg and emphasised how well the pair get on. “I think as a driver I’ve definitely learned a lot. Palestinians to snub Pence during visit over Jerusalem move
CAIRO - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not meet U.S. Vice President Mike Pence during Pence’s visit to the region this month in a snub over the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the Palestinian foreign minister said on Saturday.
Violence erupted for a third day in Gaza in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement on Wednesday, which overturned decades of U.S. policy towards the Middle East. Israeli air strikes killed two Palestinian gunmen on Saturday after militants fired rockets from the enclave into Israel on Friday, which had been declared a “day of rage” by Palestinian factions. Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem has infuriated the Arab world and upset Western allies, who say it is a blow to peace efforts and risks sparking more violence in the region. Late on Saturday, Arab foreign ministers urged the United States to abandon its decision and said the move would spur violence throughout the region. The Arab League, in a statement issued after an emergency session in Cairo, called Trump’s announcement a “dangerous violation of international law” which had no legal impact and was void. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted to critics in a statement before meetings in Paris on Sunday with French President Emmanuel Macron to be followed by a meeting with European foreign ministers in Brussels. “I hear (from Europe) voices of condemnation over President Trump’s historic announcement but I have not heard any condemnation for the rocket firing against Israel that has come (after the announcement) and the awful incitement against us,” Netanyahu said.
Israel maintains that all of Jerusalem is its capital. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future independent state. Most countries consider East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed after capturing it in a 1967 war, to be occupied territory, and say the status of the city should be left to be decided at future Israeli-Palestinian talks. The Trump administration says it is still committed to Palestinian-Israeli talks, that Israel’s capital would be in Jerusalem under any serious peace plan, and that it has not taken a position on the city’s borders. It says the moribund negotiations can be revived only by ditching outdated policies. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said the Palestinians will be looking for a new peace talks broker instead of the United States and would seek a United Nations Security Council resolution over Trump’s decision. “We will seek a new mediator from our Arab brothers and the international community,” Maliki told reporters in Cairo before the Arab League meeting on Trump’s Jerusalem decision. A Turkish presidential source said Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron will work together to try to persuade the United States to reconsider the move. A possible meeting with Pence has also been turned down by Egypt’s Coptic Church, MENA state news agency reported. White House and U.S. State Department officials did not respond to requests for comment. Palestinian officials said Pence had been due to meet Abbas on Dec. 19. Trump’s adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is leading efforts to restart negotiations, though his bid has shown little public progress so far. (rtr)

CAIRO - Arab foreign ministers late on Saturday urged the United States to abandon its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, saying the move would increase violence throughout the region. The announcement by President Donald Trump on Wednesday was a “dangerous violation of international law”, had no legal impact and was “void”, the Arab League said in a statement after a session attended by all its members in Cairo. Trump’s endorsement of Israel’s claim to all of Jerusalem as its capital would reverse long-standing U.S. policy that the city’s status must be decided in negotiations with the Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. “The decision has no legal effect ... it deepens tension, ignites anger and threatens to plunge region into more violence and chaos,” the Arab League said at 3 a.m. local time
after hours of meetings that began on Saturday evening. It said it would seek a U.N. Security Council resolution rejecting the U.S. move. Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said during the emergency meeting that Arab nations should consider imposing economic sanctions against the United States to prevent it moving its Israel embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. “Pre-emptive measures (must be) taken ... beginning with diplomatic measures, then political, then economic and financial sanctions,” he said, without giving specific details. The Arab League statement made no mention of economic sanctions. SOLO - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) acknowledged that there is still a lot of homework for human rights enforcement that has not been done by the government. “I realize there are still a lot of big jobs, homework concerning the enforcement of human rights that has not been completed yet, including the violation of human rights,” said President Jokowi here on Sunday. The President made the remarks during the commemoration of the 69th World Human Rights Day in Solo attended by Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yasonna H Laoly, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Chief of Staff of President Teten Masduki, special presidential staff for Communication Johan Budi Sapto Pribowo, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and other officials. Some cases of unresolved human rights violations include the 1982-1985 mysterious shootings, the forced disappearances of 1997-1998, the May 1998 riots, the Trisakti, Semanggi I and Semanggi II events and others. “This requires our work, the joint work among the central government, the regional governments and all components of society. With our joint work on human rights, we bring social justice to the people of Indonesia,” said the President. However, President Jokowi admitted that there have been many government efforts made to provide basic services for the community. “The government has distributed Indonesia Smart Cards (KIP) to 17.9 million children from poor families. Geographically, the Tamba Waras Temple is located on the south slope of Mount Batukaru,
precisely at Sangketan, Penebel, Tabanan. The temple located on the same line as the Batukaru Temple sits on the altitude of about 725 meters above sea level. To get to this temple, pilgrims have to cover a distance of about 22 km from the town of Tabanan. In terms of the temple structure, the Tamba Waras Temple is also nicknamed as the warehouse of universal medicine. It is estimated to have been established in the twelfth century. Before saying prayers, all the pilgrims should first do self-purificatory rite or melukat at the sapta Ganges shower. Left to bar, belonging of tourist stolen MANGUPURA — Theft case occurred at Old Man Bar & Restaurant on Jalan Batu Bolong, Canggu, North Kuta. The iPhone owned by David Pierre Michael Bakker, 49, from the Netherlands, was lost. Actually, the iPhone worth IDR 15 million was placed on the table and left to the bar. The perpetrator is Yudha Purnama Jaya, 23, and he was arrested on Sunday (Nov. 26) on Jalan Batu Bolong, North Kuta. Chief of North Kuta Police, Johanes H. Widya Dharma Nainggolan, accompanied by Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit, Putu Ika Prabawa, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) the victim on Tuesday (Nov. 21) at 23:20 was at the scene chatting with his friend. At that time, the victim staying on Jalan Batu Mejan, Canggu, North Kuta, put his black iPhone 7 plus on the table. “At that time, a friend was there, so the victim left the desk for a moment to go to the bar. The iPhone was left on the table,” said Ika Prabawa. After that, in fact the victim’s friend left the table briefly to the bathroom. A few minutes later, the victim returned to the desk and found his iPhone to have gone. The victim immediately asked about it to his friend and it was answered if he did not know. AMLAPURA — Mount Agung eruption continues to increase. PARIS - Hundreds of thousands of people paid homage to late French rock and roll giant Johnny Hallyday at a Paris memorial service attended by French stars and politicians. A hearse carrying Hallyday’s white coffin, accompanied by 700 Harley Davidson motorcycles, drove the length of the Champs Elysees boulevard in a rare honour usually reserved for foreign statesmen on July 14 National Day. As his band played instrumental versions of his biggest hits, the crowds belted out the words, many in leather biker jackets and carrying pictures of Harley Davidson enthusiast Hallyday, who died of lung cancer on Wednesday at the age of 74. Largely unknown abroad, Hallyday was a household name in France, where he had tens of millions of fans and sold more records than any other singer in a career spanning five decades. His death nine months after announcing his illness sparked days of national mourning, with broadcasters providing wall-to-wall coverage of the rocker’s life, tracing the history of a man regarded by many, non-fans included, as part of French national heritage. In a eulogy on the stairs of the La Madeleine church, French President Emmanuel Macron said Hallyday was “more than a singer ...he was part of ourselves, part of France”. “It is a sad day today but you had to be there because Johnny was there for you from the beginning. Using social media to help boost tourism amidst threat of volcano
MANGUPURA - Bali has been loosing billions of rupiah a day due to the effects of the eruption of Mount Agung – particularly from the slumping tourism sector. Mount Agung is notoriously hard to predict in terms of volcanic activity so nobody knows how long such conditions will last. The financial losses encured by Bali due to Mount Agung eruption reaches billions of rupiahs each day, especially the tourism sector. Special characteristic of Mount Agung makes this condition difficult to be predicted how long it will last. According to Head of Bali Recreation Entrepreneurs Association, Indha Trimafo Yudha, social media should be taken advantage of to promote tourism in Bali in order to encourage visitors to come to Bali. “Recreational sites remain quite and hotel occupancy rates are down to 10 percent in many parts of the island. November and early December have seen very few tourists. Around 10 days before Christmas is usually a peak time for tourism, but so far, the number of visitors are down 80-90 percent”, she said. Foreign tourists tend to plan their trip long in advance, whereas domestic tourists may plan their holidays at the last minute. So given the current uncertain conditions of Mount Agung, it , even massive amounts of tourism
promotion may not be enough to convince foreign tourists to book their holiday in Bali. Using social media to show people that Bali is safe is one way to help recover the tourism sector. Testimonies from tourists can also be an effective way of convincing people to come to Bali. “There are even tourists who specifically want to get a closer look at Mount Agung for themselves- though of course form a safe distance. It is not surprising as this is a rare historical event that they can witness first hand”, explained Yudha. We are asking all related parties to lend a hand in this effort. “We should not put on airs or remain too theoretical about how to increase tourism”, she added. Currently, many tourism businesses are restructuring their operations so as to remain in business. Reserve funds are needed, however tourism tends not to have such funds set aside. “ We tend to re-invest our profits. We need the help of the government to motivate guests to come to Bali”, she added. Yudha added that the eruption of Mount Agung should be taken advantage of to look for ways for Bali to generate income from sectors other than tourism such as small and medium enterprise (SMEs) and small and medium industry (SMIs). BANGLI - Hotel occupancy rates and restaurant customers have declined drastically in Kintamani since Mount Agung, Karangasem erupted last November. If such conditions persist there could be major layoffs in the tourism sector. Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Bangli, Ketut Mardjana, said on Friday (Dec. 8) that the eruption of Mt. Agung in November has had a significant negative impact on tourism in Bangli. Lake View Hotel and Restaurant for example is almost always crowded with tourist, but for the last few weeks has become deserted. Before the eruption this hotel in Penelokan had average occupancy rates of 75 percent, but now occupancy rates are just 5 percent. “Likewise, the Klumpu that is usually full of European guests is now empty”, he explained. Mardjana however added that despite the drastic decrease in visitors, so far no hotels or restaurants have shut down or laid off employees. Instead employees have been working shorter
shifts or have taken time off in turns. Nevertheless, there is a very real possibility of mass layoffs and businesses closing down if there continues to be a lack of guests, added Mardjana. The tourism sector is not the only one that would be affected, farmers for example face a direct threat if their produce is no longer in demand. In order to prevent loss of employment, serious measures need to be taken now to encourage tourists to visit Kintamani. Hoteliers and restaurateurs as well as the government including the Ministry of Tourism, provincial and district governments need to spread the word that Kintamani and Bali in general remain safe to visit. One way of doing this is by inviting foreign media to convey the fact that there are many places in Bali that are perfectly safe visit. “This needs to be made known to people. If possible the government could invited consulates to meet with the governor as they did before the eruption when the warning level was still on alert”, said Mardjana. (kmb40)

Bosnian museum of wartime childhood aims to go global, wins top prize
SARAJEVO - In just a year, a small Bosnian museum dedicated to the experience of growing up during the Balkan wars has opened its doors, won a best European museum prize and decided to go global. The War Childhood Museum in Sarajevo, a trove of memorabilia from Bosnians whose childhood was traumatized by the 1990s war, has started collecting personal items from children affected by other wars, such as those in Syria and Ukraine. The idea was born out of the experience of the museum’s founder,
Jasminko Halilovic, and has become a long-term project to create the world’s largest archive on the impact of war on children. “Speaking about the war from a child’s perspective is the most powerful anti-war message,” 27-yearold Halilovic told Reuters. He said that giving away personal items also helped children cope with the trauma of war. The Bosnian 1992-95 war was Europe’s bloodiest since World War Two. The museum has collected more than 4,000 exhibits donated by children who endured it, and over 150 hours of a video archive
of oral history interviews. Halilovic said the items from other conflicts could be put on display next year. Among the artefacts is a perfume bottle donated by 10-year-old Syrian girl Yehya from Homs. It belonged to her father, who was killed going to work, and its scent used to bring back memories in
Lebanon, where she found a refuge. “The notion that we have such museum in Bosnia opened a window of hope to the Syrian children in Lebanon that the war in Syria will also come to an end and they could make something similar,” Amina Krvavac, the museum’s executive director, said.
The museum’s current exhibit showcases around 50 items hanging from the ceiling, such as a bright blue “dress of spite” worn by a Sarajevo girl to defy snipers, or ballet shoes in which another danced “to disconnect from reality”, set on simple white pedestals against a minimalist grey backdrop. The Council of Europe this week picked the museum for its annual prize among 40 candidates as “a truly inspiring example of a grassroots initiative”. The judges praised its potential to become “a powerful selfsustained model of civic initiative” and said it offered an example that could be replicated in war zones worldwide. The project encountered political obstructionism, a protracted struggle to secure adequate space and lack of institutional support until it turned to a combination of crowdfunding, international aid and voluntarism. Lack of tourist visit, management asked to repair object
TABANAN — The eruption of Mount Agung has had a tremendous impact on Bali relying on tourism. So far, the number of tourist visits at several attractions decreased as soon as Mount Agung showed its volcanic activity. However, the lack of tourist visits does not necessarily make the management remain silent. In Tabanan district, the management decided to improve the existing facilities. Head of the Tabanan Tourism Office, I Made Yasa, when asked for his confirmation admitted that tourism sector of Bali, including in Tabanan, is hit with the current natural conditions. Admittedly, tourist visits, especially foreign tourists, to Bali plummeted extraordinarily. This condition occurred all over Bali including the favorite tourist destinations. “It is a matter of natural factor, we can only surrender,” said Yasa on Wednesday (Dec. 6). Admittedly, the tourists especially for foreign tourists are very much dependent on security factor. Mount Agung eruption has made tourists afraid to visit Bali, although the condition of Bali in general is safe. Moreover, the Tabanan is quite far from Mount Agung. This condition is worsened by the closure of Ngurah Rai Airport due to volcanic ashes resulting in a tremendous impact. Foreign tourists are afraid to come to Bali. In addition, the airlines also cancel their flights to Bali. “As the name implies that foreign tourists arrive through the airport, if the flight is closed, no foreign tourists can come,” he said.
He said there is still a glimmer of hope for tourism sector of Bali, especially Tabanan. He hoped in the yearend holidays, Christmas and New Year, along with school holidays after the semester final exam, there will be a lot of domestic tourists coming to Tabanan. The existence of three main attractions is expected to remain attractive for domestic tourists to come to Tabanan. He just hoped the weather condition will be getting better to avoid high waves. “Hopefully, domestic tourists will come and the eruption of Mount Agung will pass by quickly,” he said. Nevertheless, his management keeps trying to attract tourists to come to Tabanan. For instance, the promotion is continuously made through website, including internet via Google that tourist attractions in Tabanan are safe to be visited. “We still do promotions through leaflet and the internet,” he said. Behind the current condition and deterioration occurred, he said it is the moment or opportunity for the management of tourist attractions to repair their objects. Thus, when the tourism sector recovered, the attractions are ready and there are new things to be offered for the convenience of tourists. Seven charms becoming the tourism icon should be encouraged so that tourists are happy to come to Bali especially to Tabanan. The current condition is the opportunity for us to do arrangement and repair of tourist object so that they will be better and ready to accept the arrival of tourists,” he concluded. (kmb28)

Based on latest data, the refugee here reaches 1,930 people consisting of children, teenagers and elderly that come from several hamlets at Besakih and Pempatan. They occupy hamlet hall, Yadnya Market and tent or temporary shelter built independently by refugees. Although it is only a temporary shelter, refugees organize their refuge creatively. Meanwhile, elementary school students are learning to play gamelan in order to fill their spare time when coming home from school. A resident from Palak hamlet, Besakih, I Gusti Ngurah Alit, expressed there are indeed some refugees making creativity by decorating their dwellings in order to look more beautiful. He said it is meant to make them more comfortable in the evacuation and their tents look neater and cleaner when viewed. “In addition to painting tent walls, they also decorate their front area with ornamental plants. I think it is very positive, although it is only a temporary shelter. However, they still want their place to look beautiful and clean,” he said. Aside from beautifying their refugee camp, he gives the opportunity to school students to play gamelan. It is used to fill their spare time outside school hours. “This gamelan instrument is brought by one of the refugees. To make the gamelan useful, I finally take the initiative to give children gamelan playing activity. Hopefully, the gamelan playing will make them no longer bored in the evacuation,” said Ngurah Alit. (nan)

LOS ANGELES - The galaxy far, far away was brought to life in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday for the world premiere of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” where the anticipated first screening was dedicated to the franchise’s late star, Carrie Fisher. “I want to dedicate tonight to Carrie, who is up there right now flipping me the bird, saying ‘Damn it Rian, don’t you dare make this night a solemn tribute,’” the film’s writer-director Rian Johnson said as he introduced the screening. “So let’s all have a blast tonight for Carrie,” he said. The film ends with a dedication to Fisher, who plays Princess Leia. The actress died at age 60 last December after completing her work on “The Last Jedi”. Her character, now known as General Leia Organa, leader of the Resistance, plays a key role in the film.
Walt Disney Co.’s “The Last Jedi”, out in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, follows 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and picks up with the Resistance fighting off Supreme Leader Snoke’s First Order which is trying to take control of the galaxy. Rey (Daisy Ridley), meanwhile, tries to convince Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to join the Resistance fight and bring a spark of hope to the rebels against Snoke’s tyrannical rule. SYDNEY - Australian actor Geoffrey Rush said on Friday he had filed a defamation lawsuit against Sydney’s Daily Telegraph newspaper after it published a report about a complaint alleging inappropriate conduct. The newspaper article last month said an Australian theatre company had received a complaint about “inappropriate behaviour” following the production of King Lear two years ago in which Rush was the star. Rush has denied any wrongdoing and said he was never told of the complaint at the time. Details of the complaint have not been
made public. “They have splashed spurious claims with bombastic titles on their front pages,” the Oscarwinning actor said in a brief press conference in Melbourne. “This has created irreparable damage to my reputation,” he added. “This situation is intolerable and I must now seek vindication of my good name through the courts in Australia.” The Daily Telepgrah Editor Chris Dore said in a statement to Reuters that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp-run newspaper will defend itself. “The Daily Telegraph accurately

More snow to fall across UK with travel disruption expected
LONDON - Large parts of the UK will continue to see heavy snowfall on Sunday as temperatures drop and forecasters warn of widespread travel disruption. An amber weather warning will remain in place for central areas until 6pm, while up to 28cm (11in) of snow was recorded in Wales. Rain, sleet and snow are expected to continue for the rest of the day and the Met Office said rural communities could be cut off as roads become hazardous. Significant traffic was reported in Leicestershire, Worcestershire and Bedfordshire, and snow fell heavily in Birmingham city centre. Police forces in Wales and across the Midlands urged motorists not to
travel unless absolutely necessary as they dealt with an increased number of calls. A northbound section of the M1 was closed in Leicestershire due to numerous vehicles being stranded.Flights were suspended at Birmingham airport while the runway was cleared, leaving passengers facing delays. Other airports advised customers to leave extra time for their journey and check with airlines for delays and cancellations before travelling. The Met Office said: “Road, rail and air travel delays are likely, as
well as stranding of vehicles and public transport cancellations.” Parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland were expected to be spared snow and to see a bright, clear day on Sunday, with very cold temperatures. Only a few places in the south were expected to have double-figure temperatures, with 10C (50F) in Plymouth. Heavy snow across the middle of the country was expected to lighten as the day progressed, with skies clearing by Monday morning. The Met Office warned that many areas would start next week with very cold temperatures and severe frost, presenting a risk of ice. The amber alert was accompa-
nied by a yellow warning of strong winds of up to 80mph (129km/h) on Sunday for parts of eastern England, London and the south-east, the south-west and Wales, which could cause a short-term loss of power and other services, as well as transport disruption.
