More sex education needed in China, director Vivian Qu says with new film

VENICE - Vivian Qu hopes her new film “Angels Wear White” (“Jia Nian Hua”) will generate a discussion on sex education and child protection in her home country, the Chinese director said at the Venice film festival on Friday. Qu, whose directorial debut “Trap Street” (“Shuiyin jie”) premiered to critical acclaim at the festival in 2013, is back in Venice to present her latest project. “We are trying to tell educators it’s important to (educate about sex) at an early age because children need to learn how to protect themselves because the parents are not necessarily always around,” Qu told Reuters in an interview. “Angels Wear White” is set in a seafront town, where two young girls are assaulted in a motel by a middle-aged man. The only witness is receptionist Mia, played by Wen Qi, who is only a few years older than the girls. As news of the assault spread, the hotel’s managers try to cover up the evidence. Mia, worried she may lose her job, says nothing, and with few adults to turn to, both her and Wen have to find their own way out of their troubles. Qu said she drew inspiration for the film from real life. It pained her to think that justice often was not served or came too late for the victims, she said. Making a movie on such a sensitive topic with a young, non-professional actress presented its own challenges, she added. Qu spent two months training her young star Zhou Meijun on weekends when the girl was out of school. Zhou was not aware of the full plot and was given the scenes only gradually. “She didn’t understand, she was very young and very pure. So, we only gave her scene by scene,” Qu said. “We focused more on her relationship with her parents because that’s also how the film was and because those are the things that she could understand,” she added. Qu is the only female director in the festival’s main competition this year and, while acknowledging the difficulties female film makers face, Qu said she believed it was more important to encourage women to get into the industry rather than opt for quotas. YANGON/SHAH PORIR DWIP ISLAND, Bangladesh - M yanmar on Sunday rebuffed a ceasefire declared by Muslim Rohingya insurgents to enable the delivery of aid to thousands of displaced people in the violence-racked state of Rakhine, declaring simply that it did not negotiate with terrorists. Attacks by militants on police posts and an army base on Aug. 25 prompted a military counter-offensive that triggered an exodus of Rohingya to Bangladesh, adding to the hundreds of thousands already there from previous spasms of conflict. According to the latest estimate by U.N. workers in the Cox’s Bazar region of southern Bangladesh, about 294,000 - many of them sick or wounded - have arrived in just 15 days, putting huge strain on humanitarian agencies’ operations. Thousands of Rohingya remaining in the north-western state of Rakhine have been left without shelter or food, and many are still trying to cross mountains, dense bush and rice fields to reach Bangladesh. The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgent group declared a month-long unilateral ceasefire, starting on Sunday, so that aid could reach these people. The impact of ARSA’s move is unclear, but it does not appear to have been

able to put up significant resistance against the military force unleashed in Rakhine state, where thousands of homes have been burned down and dozens of villages destroyed. ARSA’s declaration drew no formal response from the military or the government of Buddhistmajority Myanmar. However, the spokesman for Myanmar’s leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, said on Twitter: “We have no policy to negotiate with terrorists.” Myanmar says its security forces are carrying out clearance operations to defend against ARSA, which the government has declared a terrorist organisation. Human rights monitors and fleeing Rohingya say the army

About a dozen Muslim villages were burned down on Friday and Saturday in the ethnically mixed Rathedaung region of Rakhine, two sources monitoring the situation said. “Slowly, one after another, villages are being burnt down - I believe that Rohingyas are already wiped out completely from Rathedaung,” said one of the sources, Chris Lewa of the Arakan Project, a Rohingya monitoring group. LANDMINE ALLEGATIONS In Cox’s Bazar, Reuters journalists saw waves of Rohingya arriving on Sunday, and crowds of desperate people - mostly women and children - queuing for handouts of food and clothes. More than 300 people arrived on small boats and fishing trawlers on Shah Porir Dwip island, a short distance from the mouth of the Naf river that separates the two countries and flows out into the Bay of Bengal. Many collapsed on the beach from motion sickness and dehydration. Three Rohingya were killed by landmines on Saturday as they tried to cross from Myanmar, a Bangladeshi border guard said, and Amnesty International said there were two landmine incidents on Sunday, including a blast that blew off a man’s leg. “All indications point to the Myanmar security forces deliberately targeting locations that Rohingya refugees use as crossing points,” Tirana Hassan, Amnesty international’s Crisis Response Director, said in a

statement. “This is a cruel and callous way of adding to the misery of people fleeing a systematic campaign of persecution,” she said. A Myanmar military source told Reuters last week that landmines had been laid along the border in the 1990s to prevent trespassing and the military had since tried to remove them. But none had been planted recently. Dipayan Bhattacharyya, the World Food Programme’s spokesman in Bangladesh, said the latest estimate of new arrivals was 294,000 and there were discussions underway to revise up the prediction made last week that it would reach 300,000. Abundance of diversity in epic performance by Pancer Langiit for celebration of Bali Post’s 69th anniversary

Last night (Sep. 10), saw a fully packed house at the Denpasar Art Center’s Adicandra open stage, from where every single person present no doubt went home fully satisfied with the truly colossal 3.5 hour show. Indonesia is world renowned for its truly astonishing array of divers cultures, beliefs, customs and arts which are represented by Pancasila’s motto “Bhinekka Tungal Ika’ (Unity in diversity). Although every island in the archipelago and each region of every island has its own unique and rich performing arts heritage, it is perhaps only in Bali that these could be represented with such shocking pageantry and yet remain deliciously palatable. Bali’s Pancer Langit dance troupe put together a monumental performance in homage to Pancasila’s motto: Bhinekka Tungal Ika (unity in diversity) in celebration of Bali Post’s 69th anniversary and in recognition of Bali Post’s steadfast dedication to Pancasila over the years. The starling diversity of both the dances and other acts that made up this unforgettable evening was a most fitting expression of the contribution that Bali Post has made to this great nation over the years. A brief though vivacious gamelan music piece opened the great event followed by the Balinese dancers who combined traditional choreography with distinctly contemporary dance moves. The honoured guests then took to the stage inviting the audience to chant in unison: “I am Indonesia, I am Pancasila, we are all family”. The audience responded with subdued enthusiasm but everyone’s fist was in the air. Governor of Bali, Mangku Pastika gave a short speech congratulating Bali Post and thanking them for their contribution to the media landscape. The bondres (traditional Balinese comedy troupe), then took to the stage where they remained, accompanying the audience through the journey that this evening was to be. In typical bondres fashion they fumbled around making silly though cutting jokes about media in general and power in particular and continued in this line of social commentary when the “king of Bali”, joined them onstage making fun of the powerful but also demonstrating his own power. After two Barong opened the journey and Goddess Saraswati in

full regalia descended to sing her blessings for the arts, the three buffoons set off on a journey across Indonesia on the king’s behalf to invite dancers from all over the archipelago to come and perform in Bali. Starting in East Java with the mystical Kuda Lumping dance and accompanying whip-yielding shamans, moving onto to Ponorogo’s equally mystically charged Reog dance, then onto West Java’s Japongan dance, the Balinese buffoons introduced and explained each dance and then scrambled after the dancers to give them their invitations. This continued through Sumatera, Kalimantan and finally to Papua with dances from each region being performed one after another with impressive skill and vitality, elaborate costumes and props and with modern stage lighting that created a somewhat surreal experience. For most people this would have already been a more than satisfying show, but the night was still young. After their ‘return’ to Bali, the three bondres actors were greeted with a performance by a local pop legend who sang and bantered with the young men before they reported back to the king who then presented them with a gift of thanks for their efforts. From the very heavens the king had summoned three nymphs for the young men. The three ‘nymphs’ it turned out were aged European ladies who the young men promptly refused. The ladies (who have their own bondres troupe), would not be refuted so easily. Hilarious antics followed in which the ladies demonstrated their mastery of Indonesian, Balinese and the ancient court language of Kawi and a brief Balinese dance. One of the ladies even threatened to use the very language of the gods before launching into a local pop song. The ladies finally decided that they would be better off back in paradise and promptly returned from where they had come. Before the young men knew what to do, the gates of heaven opened again and a beautiful Balinese singer descended dressed in Diva attire serenaded the audience. Two more equally beautiful and talented divas took turns sharing their songs. After a few moments of determining which lady would be suited to which of the bondres actors, balanced had been restored. to sing a a moving song about his love for Indonesia. His heartfelt voice might have brought tears to the eyes of the audience were he not interrupted after each line of his song by the bondres guys and the king translating his words into English, Balinese, Japanese and grunts. His song nonetheless managed to move the audience who cheered with great applause. The journey was however not over yet. Another pop band took to the stage along with four deities who paraded around in the background as the young men performed. Then there was some more comedy which one might have thought was bringing the whole show to a close, but this was not so. First the two Barong return to the stage, only this time they were soon accompanied by about fifty other dancers holding giant wooden cow bells with Barong heads who all danced a traditional west Balinese dance that was both highly rhythmic and visually mesmerizing. Suddenly we were transported again but this time from the world of pop stars, glamour and young love to an ancient ritual that called us out of this time and place to a space beyond time and place. The entire cast of the evening then joined the Barong crew on stage as pyrotechnics were set ablaze and the whole stage moved back and forth in unison. Believe it or not, this was not the finale. Since it was established 69 years ago, Bali Post has seen its ups and downs and as any media outlet has ventured into the grey areas of the socio-political arena. Most however would agree that this celebratory performance represented the dedication and perseverance that this Balinese newspaper has shown for their commitment to serving as a voice for the people of Bali as part of the great nation of Indonesia. After the pyrotechnics were done and the Barong has been encircled several times, the other dancers left the stage to make room for the gamelan players to backup the full Barong troupe and as the giant dance troupe resumed its ranks and the pulsating rhythm reached a crescendo, what some might call raindrops started to fall gently from the sky as if the gods themselves wanted to show that they approved and gave their blessing with a brief sprinkle as Balinese priests do to mark the closing of prayers and ceremonies. As the show ended, so did the light rain and the satiated gathering dispersed into the night. (kmb)

No smartphones! Vintage mobile phone museum opens in Slovakia

DOBSINA - As new smartphones hit the market month in month out, one Slovak technology buff is offering visitors to his vintage cellphone museum a trip down memory lane - to when cellphones weighed more than today’s computers and most people couldn’t afford them.

Twenty-six year-old online marketing specialist Stefan Polgari from Slovakia began his collection more than two years ago when he bought a stock of old cellphones online. Today, his collection boasts some 1,500 models, or 3,500 pieces when counting duplicates.

The museum, which takes up two rooms in his house in the small eastern town of Dobsina, opened last year and is accessible by appointment. The collection includes the Nokia 3310, which recently got a facelift and re-release, as well as a fully

functional, 20-year old, brick-like Siemens S4 model, which cost a whopping 23,000 Slovak koruna more than twice the average monthly wage in Slovakia when it came out. “These are design and technology masterpieces that did not steal your time. There are no

phones younger than the first touchscreen models, definitely no smartphones,” said Mr Polgari. “It’s hard to say which phone is most valuable to me, perhaps the Nokia 350i Star Wars edition,” said Mr Polgari - who uses an iPhone in his daily life. (rtr)

SEMARAPURA - Sente landfill at Sente hamlet, Pikat, Dawan, has been overloaded. Responding to this condition, the government of Klungkung district intensively looking for a solution. The steps taken do not only pursue the realization of waste disposal to regional landfill in Bangli district but also proposes the construction of new landfill to central government. This proposal is said to have received a response, and the process will start in 2018. This was conveyed by the Head of the Klungkung Environmental and Land Affairs Agency, Anak Agung Kirana, in a working meeting with Commission II of the Klungkung House of Representatives on Wednesday (Sep. 6). Construction of the new landfill will be located at Glogor hamlet, Pikat, not far from the Sente landfill. The proposal was submitted through the ministry of public works and housing (PU-PR). Previously, there was information related to workmanship and site inspection having been done. In terms of location, the land area and accessibility have met the requirements. “It has been surveyed. The area spreads across 1.5 hectares and the land is owned by district government. Position and road access also support,” he explained. Selection of Dawan subdistrict, especially Pikat village, as the location is inseparable from the Regional Spatial Plan. The cost of this project is fully handled by central government. It will apply a sanitary landfill system. “So far, we do not know about the budget. It is fully handled by central government, while district government only prepares the land,” said Kirana. Furthermore, he added that this project has been disseminated but just targeted community leaders. He claimed it got positive response. “If worked on next year, we can dispose of garbage there in 2019. Methane gas generated by the

waste will also be utilized as at Sente landfill,” he explained. Before it can be realized, the district government still pursues the realization of regional landfill in Bangli district. Based on information, it is just waiting for the signing of the MoU. This measure is important to accelerate the handling of daily garbage where the garbage produced by urban areas reaches 15 trucks. “Sente landfill has already overloaded. The garbage will be brought to regional landfill of Bangli. Hopefully, by the end of this year it will have run. We also continuously make other efforts to reduce the volume of garbage. One of them is by processing it into briquettes,” he said. In addition to landfill construction in Klungkung mainland, next year the government will also repair the Biaung and Jungutbatu landfill in Nusa Penida. These two projects will also be handled directly by the ministry of public works. In the meantime, Chairman of Commission II of the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Komang Suantara, said the waste management must be maximized starting from household level even though there is a landfill construction plan. Besides, the implementation of Regional Regulation No. 7/2014 on waste management should also be fully implemented. “Just take action against them (violators—Ed) whoever they are,” he asserted. This Gerindra politician mentioned that the fleet availability also needs to get the attention from the district government. There must be a need mapping. It is important to make the procurement proposals easier. “In terms budgetary side, we can support the procurement of the fleet,” he said accompanied by a member of the Commission, Anak Agung Gede Bagus. PANCER Langiit Bali is one of the art communities in Bali that intensively embraces and develops contemporary art especially in the field of dance. Though exploring contemporary ‘territories,’ the works of this art community initiated by A.A. Gede Agung Rahma Putra, still refer to the aesthetic strength inherited from the Balinese ancestors. In other words, the works of Pancer Langiit Bali do no uproot from Balinese art and culture.

When the creativity of Pancer Langiit develops into other fields, such as creation of carnival costumes, the Balinese nuance is never left behind. Instead, it is believed to be the source of strength and should be made into an identity so that creative works of Pancer Langiit are able to survive amidst the increasingly tight competition. “In principle, we want to develop contemporary art coming with new life in the world of Balinese performing arts without having to leave the Balinese identity itself,” said Chief of the Pancer Langiit Foundation, AA Rahma Putra, when met at Bali Post amidst the rehearsal of the colossal performance entitled ‘Rainbow in the Land of Kertharaharja’ on Wednesday (Sep. 6). Comedian Cedil presents diversity of dialects in Indonesia

GIANYAR - Cedil is one of Bali’s comedians whose career has extends to the national level. Drawing ont the diversity of dialects in this archipelago, Ketut Suanda AKA Cedil has manages to convey messages about diversity through comedy. When met at his residence at Batubulan village, Sukawati, on Friday (Sep. 8), Ketut Suanda, admitted that translating the material of his comedy routines from Balinese into Indonesian is difficult. So instead when he performs outside of Bali, he uses local dalects to convey his material. “For instance, I can imitating the dialects from Madura to Papua, effectively enough to attract the attention fo the audience”, he said. Cedil explained that while attending Saraswati Junior High School in Denpasar, he had friends from all over Indonesia from whom he learned many dialects. “ I never thought that these friendships would have such a benefit” he said. Using the local languages of the places that he visits, he said is a real advantage in terms of delivering the material and have the audience understand his jokes. “When attending a lecture, I realized the

benefit of having friends from all over Indonesia” he said. Dialect are just one of the many differences that make up the wealth of Indonesia that works well in comedy. The diversity of tribes and languages can also be interesting material. “ Indonesia consists of approximately 700 tribes, and more than 1,100 languages. If we establish them into a single entity, the archipelago of the NKRI will become beautiful”, he said. Currently, he is also keen to convey moral messages about maintaining unity amid the diversity through comedy. However, he emphasized that featuring diversity in a comedy act must done in a way that pays attention to ethics in order to avoid undesirable things. “I also want to do something that can strengthen the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI) against the radical forces wishing to disintegrate the nation”, he said. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested dozens of top officials under the anti-graft campaign, including officers at national oil company Petronas and state-controlled palm oil firm Felda. More than 600 arrests were made just this year, MACC data showed. The actions are unusual in the Southeast Asian country, where corruption is seen as widespread. Four out of five Malaysians aged 18-35 cited corruption as the most serious issue facing the country, according to a survey released last month by the Global Shapers Community, a programme under the World Economic Forum. The United States and its allies had been bracing for another longrange missile launch in time for the 69th anniversary of North Korea’s founding on Saturday, but no fresh provocations were spotted while the North held numerous events to mark the holiday. Throughout last week, South Korean officials had warned the North could launch another intercontinental ballistic missile in defiance of U.N. sanctions and amid an escalating standoff with the United States. Washington told the U.N. Security Council on Friday to call a meeting on Monday to vote on a draft resolution establishing additional sanctions on North Korea for its missile and nuclear programme. Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said it was vital to put pressure on North Korea through additional sactions, including blocking or slowing its fuel supplies. “If we put firm pressure on North Korea such that it realises it cannot develop missiles, it will accept dialogue and we can progress with diplomatic efforts,” Onodera told public broadcaster NHK on Sunday. “Unless we firmly apply pressure, North Korea will not change its direction.” KCNA said Kim threw a banquet to laud the nuclear scientists and other top military and party officials who contributed to the nuclear bomb test last Sunday, topped with an art performance and a photo session with the leader himself.

KCNA did not specify when the banquet had been held, but analysts said it had likely been on Saturday. Photos released on Sunday by KCNA showed the young leader breaking into a broad smile at the People’s Theatre with two prominent scientists: Ri Hong Sop, head of North Korea’s Nuclear Weapons Institute, and Hong Sung Mu, deputy director of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea’s munitions industry department. Ri and Hong have played vital roles in the North’s nuclear programme, appearing at close distance to Kim during field inspections and weapons tests, including the latest nuclear test. Ri is a former director of Yongbyon Nuclear Research Centre, North Korea’s main nuclear facility north of Pyongyang, where Hong also worked as a chief engineer. North Korea had said the latest test was an advanced hydrogen bomb. There was no independent confirmation but some Western experts said there was enough strong evidence to suggest the reclusive state has either developed a hydrogen bomb or was getting very close. KCNA said on Sunday the scientists and technicians “brought the great auspicious event of the national history, an extra-large event through the perfect success in the test of Hbomb”. Though firmly rooted in themes related to Balinese arts and customs such as dance and shadow puppets, Nyoman Gunarsa has a most distinct style which he said was based on expressing rhythm through lines and colours. His love for life and culture and his kind disposition can be seen in his works which span many decades. Museum Nyoman Gunarsa was founded in 1990 and is a testament to Nyoman Gunarsa deep appreciation for Indonesian art and traditions. Last month President Jokowi visited this museum and was gifted a portrait of himself drinking jamu. The last painting that Gunarsa

worked on was a depiction of all of Indonesia’ presidents sitting together playing gamelan for a puppet show for which Jokowi serves as puppet master. Flying into the eye of Hurricane Irma with US ‘Hurricane Hunters’

THE EYE OF HURRICANE IRMA - The sky darkened, lightning flashed and a jolt of turbulence shook the cabin of the hulking Air Force turbo-prop aircraft as it plied its way toward the eye of Hurricane Irma, one of the strongest Atlantic storms ever recorded.

Piloting the four-engine, WC-130J aircraft was Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Jim Hitterman, who over the past 22 years has flown into 40 to 50 hurricanes. Every storm is different but he likens the experience to driving through a car wash - with one big difference. “As you’re driving through that car wash, a bunch of gorillas start jumping on top of your car,” Hitterman said, adding that sometimes shaking gets so bad, he cannot see his instruments. On Friday and Saturday, Reuters accompanied the Air Force Reserves’ “Hurricane Hunters,” whose hard-won data taken directly from the center of storms like Hurricane Irma are critical to U.S. forecasts that save lives. Experts say U.S. satellite data simply cannot do the job. “We can estimate by satellite what the strength and size of a hurricane is. But only if you go into the hurricane can you really get an accurate measure of its exact center location, the structure, the maximum winds,” said Rick Knabb, a hurricane expert at the Weather Channel and a former director the National Hurricane Center. The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron’s “Hurricane Hunters” are based at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Its members trace the origin of hurricane hunting to a 1943 barroom dare by two then-Army Air Corps pilots to fly through a hurricane off Texas. Today, the missions are carried out largely by Air Force reservists who, after a few days or weeks of chasing storms, return to their jobs in the civilian world. Hitterman, 49, flies for Delta Airlines most of the time and, as a hobby, races motorcycles. The flight meteorologist, Major Nicole Mitchell, is an experienced television news meteorologist and mother of an eight-month-old baby boy. She normally lives in Minnesota. The way Mitchell sees it, the more accurate her data is, the more accurate the forecasts can be that tell U.S. citizens whether to evacuate their homes as Irma or other storms advance. “It’s a fact that we make a difference,” she said.

Its final pass came on Saturday, as Hurricane Irma walloped Cuba’s northern coast. Irma’s interaction with Cuba’s terrain weakened the storm from a Category 5 to a Category 4 hurricane but U.S. National Hurricane Center warned the storm was anticipated to strengthen again. Irma was expected to hit Florida on Sunday morning, bringing massive damage from wind and flooding to America’s fourth-largest state by population. Millions of Florida residents have been ordered to evacuate. Despite the severity of storms like Irma and the undeniable danger on the ground, these U.S. flights into hurricanes have an incredible safety record - not one aircraft has been lost in more than four decades. The last time was in 1974. But they are not without risk. Some six hurricane or typhoon hunting aircraft have been lost in total, costing 53 lives, according to the Weather Underground website. The pilot lost control of the aircraft, one of the engines caught on fire, and the aircraft descended rapidly, all because satellite data had given his crew the sense they were flying into a Category 3 storm. It turned out to be a Category 5. They were flying much too low for a storm that potent. “We went in at 1,500 feet, which is a no-no in a Category 5 and we got clobbered,” recounted Masters. The pilot was able to recover control after entering Hugo’s eye. On the mission into Irma, jolts of turbulence also shook the equipment in the cabin as it neared the eye of the hurricane. Emergency parachutes swayed. But then, suddenly, everything in the plane settled down. It was safe enough to take off seat belts. The flying was smooth. Inside the eye, the sky opened up. The dark “eyewall” - the surrounding ring of clouds - could be seen outside the cockpit window. (rtr)

JUCHITAN - Anguished mourners lined the streets of the southern Mexican city devastated by the most powerful earthquake to strike the country in 85 years, coffins raised on their shoulders as they advanced slowly to a crowded cemetery on Saturday. More than half of the 65 known victims of Thursday night’s 8.1 magnitude quake died in Juchitan, a picturesque, historic city near the coast where more than 5,000 homes were destroyed and many more left without running water or electricity. In the Eighth Section neighborhood, a working-class area where nearly every home was damaged, a loud drum and horn band played traditional music before the funeral of one of the 37 dead so far recovered from the wreckage of the somber city. The piercing blasts of the burly horn section at times were drowned out by the plaintive wailing of mourners for Maximo Zuniga, a little boy whose distraught relatives said was fond of his spiky black hair and bright red tennis shoes. The three-year-old boy was asleep when the force of the quake brought his brick bedroom walls crumbling down on top of him, his mother and an older brother. The boy died shortly after he was pulled from the rubble; the other two survived. “I could barely see a little bit of his

hair peeking out and his forehead,” said neighbor Alejandro Sanchez, who was the first to come to the stricken family’s aid. “There was a heavy wooden beam on top of all three of them and lots of dirt,” he added, as the dead boy’s uncle sobbed uncontrollably nearby. The long, juddering tremor was felt some 500 miles (800 km) away in Mexico City and as far south as Honduras, but unlike the 8.0 magnitude quake in 1985 that killed thousands in the capital, outlying areas of Mexico were left relatively unscathed. Piles of rubble lay scattered across town, chunks of roofs littering the ground, and more than 300 locals were receiving care for injuries in area hospitals. Protection of Indonesian coral reefs still needed

JAKARTA - Indonesia, which is home to some 10-25 percent of the worlds coral reefs, still needs to increase public awareness on protecting its coral reefs for the preservation of its marine ecosystem and fishery resources.

Ultimately, the livelihoods of millions of fishermen residing in the coastal areas depend on resources gathered from the reefs. Indonesias coral reefs continue to bear the brunt of different human activities or natural causes, such as the rising temperature. Hence, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has reminded various parties of the importance of protecting coral reefs in various regions, as it is vital to the preservation and sustainability of the nations marine ecosystem. “Efforts to maintain the marine ecosystem should start from coral reefs,” Director General of Sea Spatial Management of the KKP Brahmantya Satyamurti Poerwadi remarked in Jakarta on Friday (Sept 8). To this end, he said, constantly improving the quality of coral reefs and seagrass beds in the Indonesian waters holds the same significance as ensuring the potential and preservation of fishery resources. The KKPs Directorate General of Sea Space Management also emphasized the importance of creating large areas for coral reefs, so that they cannot be destroyed but be fully preserved. Based on the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPIs) data, the latest measurement results through satellite mapping show that Indonesias coral reefs are spread across 25 thousand square kilometers, or some 10 percent of the worlds coral reefs. According to the monitoring conducted by 1,064

observation stations in 108 locations in Indonesia, some 6.39 percent of the coral reefs at 68 sites are still in a very good condition; 23.4 percent at 249 places are in a good state; 35 percent in 373 spots, fairly good; and 35.15 percent at 374 sites are in a bad condition. According to LIPIs analysis, the unfavorable conditions are due to bleaching as a result of the rising sea temperature triggered by the El Nino weather phenomenon. Coral reefs are also damaged due to other human activities, such as transportation or fishing using trawls. In some areas, environmentalists regretted the recurrence of coral reef destruction as had occurred in the Karimunjawa waters, Jepara District, in Central Java by coal barges. Deputy of the Indonesia Coralreef Action Network Amiruddin stated during a meeting with Commission B of the Central Java Provincial Legislative Assembly in Semarang on Monday (Sept 9) that more than 1,660 square meters of coral reefs in the Karimunjawa waters were damaged by barge activities. Meanwhile, environmentalist Gabriel Mahal reported alleged damage to coral reefs in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, caused by sea transportation or tourist transportation vessels. Mahal said several vessels operating in Labuan Bajo are damaging the coral reefs and affecting the marine habitat. Despite efforts being made to conserve resources, illegal activities detrimental to coral reefs still continue unabated. These activities are disadvantageous for fishermen. The Peoples Coalition for Fishery Justice highlighted three key issues causing coral reef damage in Indonesia: illegal fish-catching equipment, coastal reclamation, and mining activities. (ant)
