TABANAN - Apparently, the land along the Yeh Gangga Beach has been targeted by investors. Even, the corruption suspects also glanced at Yeh Gangga to re-invest their money. For instance, Djoko Susilo and the recent suspect Jro Wacik are known to have purchased a piece of land spreading across 2.1 hectares in the coastal area. The Head of Tabanan Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said that the land along the coast had been already owned by investors since long time ago. “Yeh Gangga is considered to have

potential for the future. On that account, since long time ago the land in coastal area has been purchased by investors,” said Adnyana. Although having been purchased by investors, the construction of ac-

commodation on Yeh Gangga was still not commonplace. Currently, the tourist accommodation on Yeh Gangga Beach consisted of two budget hotels, two cottages and two restaurants. In addition, there was horse riding attraction to be enjoyed. Availability of tourist accommodation on Yeh Gangga Beach remained some few, even though many coastal borderlines had been owned by investors. “The development of tourist accommodation is now dependent on the investors. Probably, some may have been

developed but not been recorded yet,” said Adnyana. Though it had been owned by investors, according to Adnyana, Tabanan government would provide protection for local residents. Accommodation could only be built on unproductive farming land so that the land of residents could be well maintained and not converted. “Other than for meeting the food needs, the paddy fields can also be developed into agrotourism. Thus, the accommodation can only be built on unproductive land,” said Adnyana.

Tabanan government also set Yeh Gangga as a tourist destination based on the Regent Regulation No.470/1998. “In order to develop the Yeh Gangga, Tabanan government has developed Sudimara village where Yeh Gangga belongs to one of its hamlets,” said Adnyana. Sudimara village included one of the tourism villages obtaining grants from the National Program for Tourism Self-Empowerment (PNPMP) since 2011 to develop the tourism potential at the Sudimara village. DENPASAR - A number of freelance tourist guides are often at issue in the circle of tourism businesspeople. On the one hand, they are hunted by the authorities, but on the other hand it is difficult to get license. Even, the tour guides handling guests often play hide-and-seek with the authorities because the driver does not have a permit. Interestingly, the unlicensed also has its own association because the license was complicated by the government. At the end, they are raided by municipal police at tourist attraction. On Tuesday (Sep 9), at least three freelance tourist guides were trialed in the Denpasar District Court. They

were Panca Hermawan, 32, Yusiman, 27, and Kadek Erna Johan, 31. All the three were declared to have

violated because as a tourist guide escorting guests to tourist attraction or objects they should equipped

However, the condition of the arrangement in the area seems to have been neglected by the existence of the merchandise displayed along the sidewalk. times the trucks such as container truck also take advantage of the sidewalk to load and unload their freights. As field observation on Tuesday (Sep 9), the unloading truck disrupted the sidewalk. They were charged to have violated the Article 4 paragraph (1) in conjunction with the Article 14 of the Regional Bylaw No.5/2008 on tourist guides. After the reading of the indictment, the defendants without being accompanied by lawyers underwent it by themselves. They stated to have understood about the indictment and did not object. The trial was resumed with substantiation, namely presenting witnesses from the municipal police of Bali Province who made the arrest, and one of the civil servant investigators. Basically the freelance tourist guides recognized their faults and regretted the act. Based on the testimony, the prosecutor then sued the defendant with a fine of IDR 2 million and subsidiary penalty of two months for each defendant. Responding to the demands, the three defendants pleaded for leniency, so that the judges after deliberation decided if the three defendants were proved guilty in appropriate with the charges in the Article 4 paragraph (1) in conjunction with the Article 14 of the Regional Bylaw No.5/2008 on tourist guide and fined them at IDR 1 million and subsidiary penalty of 20 days confinement. Pedophilia offender sued for five years

NEGARA - Individual officer of the West Bali National Park (TNBB) becoming a defendant in the pedophile case, I Made Sumanayasa aka Boceng, 51, was charged five years in prison. Public Prosecutor in the trial at the Negara District Court sued Boceng to have committed abuse against a minor, Tuesday (Sep 9). The prosecutor also included a fine worth IDR 80 million and subsidiary sentence of 5 months in prison. Earlier, in the indictment Boceng

was charged to have violated Article 82 of Law No. 23/2002 about child abuse, with a penalty of 3 to 15 years in prison and a fine of IDR 60 million to IDR 300 million. The closed trial only lasted for 5 minutes with the reading of the charges by the public prosecutor Chalida K Hapsari and Ni Ketut Lilik Suryanti. Boceng through his legal counsel, I Nyoman Karinata, responded to the demands and would deliver a defense in the upcoming trial. After the trial, Karinata told reporters that the demand of the prosecutor to the defendant was still too heavy.

According to him, one of the considerations was that the victim had forgiven Boceng. As reported earlier, Boceng was arrested by arrested after committing sexual abuse against a number of boys at the official residence of the West Bali National Park at Gilimanuk. The victims were boys with a number of rewards and clothes. The culprit also wrote down some names of the victims in the diary book. (kmb26)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Apple charts new course with large iPhones, smartwatch

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple moved to recapture its role as a tech trend-setter on Tuesday with its highly anticipated first smartwatch and two large-screen versions of the iPhone. With the debuts of Apple Watch and iPhone 6 models stretched to fit a hot “phablet” trend, the California company delivered what rumors had predicted leading up to the event. The Apple Watch, a sleek wrist device that links to the iPhone, “will redefine what people expect from this category,” chief executive Tim Cook said at a carefully staged presentation in Apple’s hometown Cupertino, California. Market tracker IHS saw Apple as aiming to reset the wearable computing market the way it transformed the world of smartphones with the release of the iPhone. “But moving into a new category is a bold, expensive and risky effort,” IHS said in an initial analysis of the Apple announcements. Despite an array of smartwatch releases, no one seems to have found the key to the market, according to analyst Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies. Syncing Apple Watch capabilities to iPhones also means that the overall cost of strapping one on could near $1,000, Kay noted. “I’m not getting the impression that Apple has nailed the category,” Kay told AFP. The latest Apple announcement failed to move Wall Street, with stock in the computer titan closing down by 0.4 percent and slipping a touch further in after-market trades. The iPhone 6 models boost screen sizes in what some see as the company catching up to a “phablet” trend combining features of

DETROIT — Honda shared its vision of the hands-free highway commute Tuesday, a car that can safely drive itself on the freeway while the driver’s hands are off the wheel. While the car is just a prototype, Honda says the technology could start appearing on Honda cars in 2020 and beyond. The prototype — an Acura RLX sedan — has cameras that monitor lane marking and multiple radar sensors on the front and sides. On top is a beacon that uses laser beams to continually scan the car’s surroundings, similar to self-driving prototypes already introduced by

Google, Ford and Toyota. GPS also helps the car stay on a previously mapped course and follow the speed limit. On a loop around Detroit, the car’s driver took his hands off the wheel as the car entered the freeway. It accelerated to the speed limit and applied the brakes if it got too close to a car in front. It signaled to change lanes and waited for an opening. The car merged easily onto two other freeways and edged to the left to avoid a construction zone. Related to the regular ngusaba kayehan, the chief of local customary village, Nyoman Terus, said that the ritual was habitually organized on the full

moon of September. Procession of the ritual was once presented in the cultural paraded held in the town of Amlapura recently. It was intended to conserve and foster people’s love to local wisdom for the welfare of society in terms of spiritual and physical aspect. The tradition of ngusaba kayehan (bathing place) or ngusaba negen (bearer) was alleged to have existed at local village from ancient time where the ancestors performed a meditation to local deities at the area of Manik Aji hamlet, Ban village. It was intended to invoke boon in the form of spring denoting the source of livelihood for the residents of Ban village where the village was barren and people were difficult to get clean water. Upon the request of residents who were crying and shedding tears (Balinese, Toya Panon), the deities then bestowed a spring which never dried out even though the spring often declined during long dry season. As an expression of gratitude, the residents of Ban village regularly held the ngusaba kayehan or ngusaba tegen ritual on the full moon in September. As the means used in the ritual, each native villager presented crops such as maize, cassava or sweet potatoes and fried cake carried to Puseh Temple. WASHINGTON — The Great Recession officially ended more than five years ago. Yet the feeling of many people around the world can be summarized in one word: Gloom. In a survey of 48,643 people in 44 countries out Tuesday, the Pew Research Center found that 60 percent say their own country’s economy is performing poorly. Dissatisfaction runs highest in the world’s most advanced economies, where 64 percent say conditions are bad. In the United States, 58 percent give the American economy poor marks. The deepest despair was recorded in countries hit hardest by the European debt crisis: 97 percent of Greeks, 96 percent of Italians and 93 percent of Spaniards said their economies were performing poorly. Unemployment rates are extraordinarily high in all three: 27 percent in Greece, 13 percent in Italy, 25 percent in Spain. There are exceptions to the pervasive gloom: 89 percent of Chinese are positive about their country’s economy, even though it’s slowed markedly from the double-digit growth of a few years ago. In Vietnam, 87 percent of respondents gave the economy high marks. In Germany, 85 percent did. In the countries that Pew characterizes as “emerging economies,” 59 percent said conditions were unsatisfactory. Only in low-income “developing economies” did a majority (51 percent) call economic conditions “good.” Brazil has seen the steepest drop in economic confidence: Just 32 percent of Brazilians were positive about their economy, down from 59 percent in 2013. Perceptions are improving in the United Kingdom: Last year, just 15 percent said the U.K. economy was in good shape. This year, the figure had jumped to 43 percent. Eighty percent of Chinese said their economy would be stronger in a year, making them the world’s most optimistic people. TOKYO — A nuclear power plant in southern Japan won regulators’ approval Wednesday under new safety standards imposed after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, a key step toward becoming the first to restart under the tighter rules. The Nuclear Regulation Authority unanimously approved an inspection report for the Sendai Nuclear Power Station’s two reactors. It concluded that the reactors complied with new regulations designed to avoid major damage during disasters such as the massive earthquake and tsunami that caused meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. The plant’s safety approval and its expected restart are a big boost for Japan’s nuclear industry. All of the

country’s 48 remaining reactors have been offline since the 2011 disaster for safety checks and repairs, except for two that briefly operated under the previous safety standards. The approval of the inspection report followed a 30-day review in which regulators read about 17,000 questions and comments from the public and experts, reflecting the huge public interest in the reactors’ safety and possible restart. The authority, however, has no say over a restart of the plant, and it will probably be several months before Sendai’s reactors are back online. The plant, which is operated by Kyushu Electric Power Co., still faces an on-site operational inspection and must obtain the consent of local authorities. Kyushu Electric has upgraded the plant’s seismic resistance and

is tripling the height of its tsunami seawall to 15 meters (50 feet). It also has evaluated newly added risks including terrorist attacks, airplane strikes and volcanic explosions. But opponents say the approval is premature because Kyushu Electric can wait two years to implement some key safety measures, such as filters on vents to reduce radiation leaks, and because nearby communities still lack adequate evacuation plans. Volkswagon can seal WRC crown in Australia SYDNEY — Volkswagon teammates Sebastian Ogier and JariMatti Latvala will be released from team orders and allowed to pursue their personal battle for the world drivers’ championships at the Rally of Australia starting Friday in New South Wales state. Ogier and Latvala jointly need only five points from the rally, the 10th of 14 rounds of the World Rally Championships, to clinch the manufacturers’ championships for Volkswagon. If the German team achieves that goal, it will be the earliest point of the season that a WRC title has been decided in 25 years. Volkswagon is already assured of the drivers’ crown as, with four rounds remaining, Latvala and teammate Andreas Mikkelsen are the only drivers in a position to catch Ogier who leads the title race with 187 points. Schumacher moves home to continue recovery

Michael Schumacher has returned home to continue his rehabilitation process after suffering head injuries in a skiing accident last December. Schumacher was treated in a hospital in Grenoble in the months following the accident, prior to being moved in June. Most recently, he was treated at the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland, prior to returning to his home near Lake Geneva. No further details have been issued regarding his condition, although a statement issued by his management did say that he has been making progress. “Henceforth, Michael’s rehabilitation will take place at his home,” said the statement. “Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months. “There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead. “We would like extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work. “We ask that the privacy of Michael’s family continue to be respected, and that speculations about his state of health are avoided.” The previous statement concerning his condition, released in June, confirmed that Schumacher was no longer in a coma.
