Tom Cruise returns as a top-secret agent battling a rogue global organization in the fifth installment of the blockbuster franchise. Box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said the film pulled in an estimated $29.4 million over the weekend, edging out the latest Marvel superhero flick “Fantastic Four.” “Fantastic Four,” a reboot of the comic book franchise about four youths transported to an alternate universe where they gain superpowers, debuted to poor reviews and a disappointing $26.2 million take. Also making its North American debut was “The Gift,” a psychologi-

TOKYO - US entertainment giant Disney was forced to apologise after one of its Japanese language tweets was criticised for being insensitive as the country commemorated the 70th anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bombing. The company’s Japanese unit, referencing the animated film “Alice in Wonderland”, took to social media on Sunday with a message about the movie’s well-known “unbirthdays”. The original English tweet wished followers a “very merry unbirthday”. In Disney’s original film, characters celebrate an “unbirthday” -- every day of the year except their own birthday -- during a party with Alice. However, the Japanese tweet’s wording translated as “a

day of nothing” -- and coincided with commemorations for the more than 74,000 people killed when the US dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Disney quickly deleted the tweet on Sunday, following a string of online criticism. “We deeply apologise for using an inappropriate expression that could annoy people,” it tweeted on Sunday. Company officials could not be reached for comment on Monday. The attack on Nagasaki came three days after American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped a bomb, dubbed “Little Boy”, on Hiroshima, the first atomic bombing in history. ‘Jackass’ star arrested for climbing crane in Hollywood LOS ANGELES — “Jackass” star Steve-O has been arrested for climbing a crane in Hollywood in a protest against SeaWorld. Los Angeles police said 41year-old Stephen Glover drew dozens of emergency responders to a construction site where he climbed a crane towering at least 100 feet (30 meters). Lt. Michael Ling said that when Glover reached the top, he inflated a large killer whale balloon with the words “SeaWorld Sucks” on it. He climbed down on his own and was taken into custody. El Nino impacts in Bali

Drought in a number of regions DENPASAR - The Head of the National Weather Service (BMKG), Andi Eka Sakya, recently conveyed the results of the monitoring of El Nino 2015, which showed that Indonesia will likely continue to be affected for the next few months. El Nino is considered to be moderate this year, but is predicted to have an increased impact on Bali between August and September. El Nino is a natural phenomenon related to the rising temperature of the surface of the Pacific Ocean, particularly in equatorial Chile, Peru and Latin America. As a consequence of the rising temperature of the sea, many other weather patterns are affected and often cause drought in several

regions of Indonesia especially those areas of Eastern Indonesia that lie south of the equator such as South Sumatra, Lampung, Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, Sulawesi and Southern Papua. Sakya explained that El Nino is is not just hot waves but tends to have far reaching effects such as prolonging the dry season. In Indonesia this impact tends to be felt for about 4-5 months after which the rainy season finally neutralizes its effects.

In Bali, threat of drought is predicted to enter its peak in August and September. The Head of the Bali Social Service, I Nyoman Wenten, said that the drought in Bali mainly occurred in Karangasem, Buleleng as well as Nusa Penida, Klungkung. But this time, only Julah village in Buleleng Regency had requested a help of water tanker. His party has alerted six water tanks every Friday in the area. “We have anticipated and made coordination with the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency to address the problem. For mapping out the areas experiencing drought, we have made coordination with the county and municipal government,” he said.

In addition to preparing water tanks, added Wenten, his party is also backed up with the help of rice reserves. Social Service is said to have 50 tons of rice stocks that can be distributed when drought disaster also results in hunger problem. The water tank truck will be only used to meet the needs of drinking water. “Of course, it cannot be used to meet the need of paddy fields, but just for drinking water. Some villages have been in drought condition. I think the Bali Social Service, Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Public Works and county government have prepared (tank truck—Ed), at least to serve the needs of drinking water,” said the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika.

For medium- and long-term program, he added, the drought disaster must be prevented by making dams and reservoirs. In addition, the lakes are filled with water hyacinth and the silting occurred must be dredged. In Tabanan, approximately 333 hectares of paddy plants could possibly face severe drought conditions as water upstream diminishes. Massive crop failure could occur if the drought becomes severe. As of July 15, 2015, data shows that Tabanan paddy plants are already facing three different levels of drought, depending on the area -namely: light, moderate and severe draught. The total surface area of paddy plants facing drought condition in Tabanan is 333 hectares spread over 5 subdistricts. So far most areas are classified as “light drought” though areas such as Kerambitan also have portions that are facing severe drought. East Selemadeg, West Selemadeg and Marga also face varying degrees of drought. According to the Production Division Head, of the Tabanan Agriculture, Horticulture and Food Crops Agency, I Wayan Suandra, the drought rate for the agriculture sector is not measured based on the cracks in the soil but by the percentage of shrivelled paddy plants. He explained that fields are considered to be facing “light drought” when the paddy plants wither during the day but can still access water after sundown and if given water will recover 100 percent. Moderate drought refers to conditions where where only some of the plants can recover thus resulting in reduced yields, whereas severe drought is when there is the possibility of total harvest failure if no water is made available from external sources. Suandra added that the the present drought that Tabanan is facing is due to the declining discharge of water from sources upstream that is especially affecting farmers in West Tabanan. Irrigation projects like at Ho River 1 and Ho River 2 are being appealed to as a way to help overcome this problem. According to Suandra, the Agriculture Agency in collaboration with the Public Works have set a limit on the amount of water that can be used upstream, so that more water can be channeled to the agricultural lands downstream that are facing drought. “There is a policy amongst the subak organizations in Tabanan, of setting water usage limits upstream, so that the drought affecting the paddy plants will not become more serious,” he explained. Apart from setting water usage limits, farmers are being asked to plant other -less water intensive crops. Similar drought conditions have also started to hit Buleleng County again this year, so Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, said that his government is attempted to built retention basins in five villages that are prone to drought conditions. These retention basins will serve as a backup sources of water in times of scarcity. “Buleleng faces droughts every year, but according to out assessment in the field, much of our water simply runs-off into he sea, perhaps due to the proximity of the mountains to the ocean here,” said Sutjidra. BANGLI - The drought that has been occurring in Bangli over the last few months, has resulted in increasing amounts of airborne dust from the dried up land. Elementary school children in many areas including, Pradi, Songan A village, Kintaman are forced to wear medical masks when they go to school. School principle Ketit Baru from SDN 4 Songan elementary school, said that this area is very dry and since the start of the dry season there has been lots of dusts in the air. Only very few plants can grow in Pradi due to the lack of water, so that when the dry season comes, the fields are left empty and as a result, the land quickly turns to dust that can affects respiratory health. “We experience such conditions every dry season” he said. Baru went on to explain that medical masks are required to protect the children from the adverse affects of the airborne dust during the dry season, “however, not all of our students wear such a mask. In fact, most of them do not because they cannot afford to buy them,” he said. Nearly 99 percent of the 219 students are classified as poor and do not have pocket money to buy snacks, let alone buy medi-

cal masks. Baru explained that the school therefor plans to use part of the school’s operating budget (BOS) to buy masks for the students, but needs to get approval from the Education Agency before doing so. In addition to coordinating with the Education Agency, Baru also plans to contact the Bangli Health Agency in the hopes that they can provide masks free of charge. “We will try to do what we can for the sake of the

student’s health,” he said. Some schools in Songan village are also dealing hygiene issues due to the lack of water, including not being able to flush their toilets. Head of the Bangli Education Agency, Nyoman Suteja, said that most students in the area were wearing medical masks as protection against the harmful dust. (kmb40)

evaporation process, winds are also cooler at this time. However, not all of El Nino’s effects are negative, such conditions are for example conducive to abundant chlorophyll which means that fish have more to eat and so their

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Rich countries could be at risk of worse flooding

WASHINGTON - It has long been thought that wealthy countries, bolstered with more money for infrastructure investment, face lower risks of flooding.

But new research Thursday found that rich countries face major risks as climate change and human activity render coastal populations increasingly vulnerable to devastating river delta floods. Though wealthy nations have greater resources to protect against flooding such as dams, climate change could increase the frequency and severity of floods and storms to a level that those nations may be challenged to keep pace with due to costs, according to a study in the US journal Science. Man-made changes are also increasing the risk that coastal communities face, the study found. As more land is used for agricultural production, for example, erosion occurs that reduces natural protections against flooding, the research found. The researchers calculated the challenges that more than 340 million people could face in 48 major coastal delta river communities around the world. The researchers flagged the Mississippi and the Rhine delta as potentially vulnerable, and said in some cases, the risk multiplied by four or eight times. The study said infrastructure is key to preventing flooding and recommended that wealthy nations make wise investments now. “Economic ability and decisions to deploy engineering solutions will be key factors in determining how sustainable deltas become in the long term,”

So far, paddy fields in Denpasar not affected by drought

DENPASAR - The threat of drought that is affecting planting season in many areas of Bali, has yet to affect farmers in Denpasar, where water levels have decreased but are still sufficient. Made Sudiana, a farmers at Subak Intaran, said that the dry season of the last few months has not had adverse effects on the farmers of Denpasar who use a rotating pattern for the discharge of irrigation water. “Until now, water remains available, even though its discharge has started to diminish,” he said. On Sunday, Production Division, the Denpasar Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture Agency, I.B. Mayun Suryawangsa concurred that Denpasar farmers still have access to flowing water though he admit-

ted that: “our water discharge is reduced”. Suryawangsa added that despite massive urbanization, Denpasar still has paddy fields that cover a total area of 2,506 hectares, that are spread across 43 different subak zones. Denpasar rice farmers plant twice a year, and so far about 80 percent have been able to plant. The process is still ongoing, so Denpasar might be able to plant at full production this year,” said Suryawangsa. Suryawangsa added that the field extension officers (PPL) on duty in each subdistrict moni-

tor agricultural condition in Denpasar every day. Based on incoming reports so far, there have been no ‘planting failures’. “We are very grateful that -so far, Denpasar has not been adversely affected by this dry season,” he explained. ‘No Parking’ signs still being ignored GIANYAR - The Ceking rice terrace tourist attraction apparently needs more parking spaces so as to avoid traffic congestion in the area of Tegallallang and Ceking. Even though the government has put up No Parking signs along the highway at the tourist attraction, violations are frequent and people often give the excuse that the central parking area (that can accommodate 70 cars) is full. The Gianyar Transportation Agency was forced to put up the five No Parking signs along the highway as a way to help prevent severe congestion that can stall traffic for up to an hour along tho stretch of road. Chief of Gianyar Police Traffic Affairs, Kristiyan BM however explained that the signage is still in the “dissemination” phase so police officers cannot issue tickets to violators yet so, “should there be a violation and it triggers congestion, we simply advise the driver to move their vehicle,” he said. There is also fear that issuing

parking tickets would affect the number of tourists visiting the site, but Kristiyan added that police will be regularly checking the Celing attraction in order to help avoid severe traffic congestion. “Yes, we are parking in a No Parking zone but what else can we do? The parking attendant just old me that the central parking lot is full, so I parked my car here. If I parked south of the No Parkign signs the tourists that I am accompanying would have to walk a long way, and they don’t want to, they want to be dropped off here,” said tour guide Made Dharma. “Traffic security for the region is temporarily under the command of the Tegallalang Police. More than a billion people, especially in Asia and South America, get more than half of their drinking water from the seasonal melting of snow melt and glacier ice, previous research has shown. observation, and probably for much longer, Zemp added. Moreover, accelerated ice loss has created a dynamic whereby glaciers in many regions will continue to diminish even if global warming did not continue to boost global temperatures. SINGARAJA - Cacao cultivation in Buleleng has become sluggish lately as cacao pod borers have attacked nearly 50 percent of the bean pods.Over the last five years, farmers have also had to deal with Phytoptora sp fungal disease on their cacao plants. Many farmers have simply replaced their cacao plants with other plants out of pure frustration. previsouly nearly every village in Buleleng produced cacao intercropped with other plants such as clove or coffee. At first, cacao production in Buleleng was very good and farmers were able to earn more that they could by just planting clove r coffee because the price of cacao tends to be more stable and now reaches as much as IDR 37,000 per kg of dry bean. This good situation did not last long as pests began to attack such as the cacao pod bore which shocked farmers. They have attempted to eradicate this pest but have not been very successful. In Kayu Putih village, Banjar subdistrict, for example cocoa became the leading commodity and was widely grown by farmers using the intercropping system. However, due to the insect attack, currently more than half of the local farmers have cut down their cacao plants because they have been unable to eradicate the insect that cause the cacao pods to suddenly drop from the tree after being infested by the borers.

The cacao pods were then attacked by Phytoptora sp fungus which also viciously attacks the small cacao pods. The fungus attaches to the skin of cacao pod which then turns yellow and falls from the tree and turn black. Due to the attack of the cacao pod borer and Phytoptora sp fungus, cacao development in Buleleng is danger of coming to a complete halt. Without special handling, this commodity will go disappear facing the same fate a vanilla did previously. Furthermore, he said, due to the attack of insect and Phytoptora sp the productivity of cacao in Buleleng declined by 50 percent. Under normal circumstances, every hectare of cacao plantation with a population of 1,000 plants can produce 1,100 kg dry cacao bean. In the meantime, due to the attack of cacao pod borer and Phytoptora sp, it can only produce 662 kg. “Due to the attack of insect and disease, the productivity declines to 50 percent. Besides, farmers also pay less attention to the de-

velopment of their plants, so that the attack continues to worsen,” he said. Since the cacao pod borer attacked, the control effort has been carried out by spreading the natural enemies of the cacao pod borer in the form of black ants. From the research made, black ants nesting around the cacao pod can prey on the insect of cacao pod borer that will attack. In addition, the efforts by spraying pesticide have also been done. In the meantime, farmers have been taught to use a toxic substance commonly known as Sexperomon to control the Phytoptora sp. This substance is produced to stimulate Phytoptora sp stud to get closer to Sexperomon and the trapped stud will die. Since the stud gets trapped, proliferation of this fungus will be suppressed. In addition, farmers are also recommended to pick the attacked cacao pod and throw them away from the plantation area so as

not to infect the other plants. Besides, the efforts of pruning, balanced fertilizing and maintenance of sanitation have been frequently recommended by the extension officers. “We have disseminated this control pattern through our extension officers. Apparently the results do not meet the expectation and we continue to sensitize farmers to follow our advice so that the cacao pod borer and Phytoptora sp can be eliminated,” he added. According to the latest data in 2014, Buleleng has a total area of 1,279 hectares of cacao plantation. Of that acreage, 99 hectares are recorded as newly producing plants. The remaining 1,147 hectares have already produced. In addition, there are 33 hectares of crops in the category of old or damaged plants. In 2014, the total productive plants are recorded to have produced 759.54 tons. (kmb38)

Pergung River filled with trash

NEGARA - Pergung River, which divides the villages of Pergung and Pohsanten is filled with garbage that is even visible front the bridge and gives the river a distinct impression of being neglected. Based on observation made from the bridge of Pergung on Friday, the river is inundated by plastic waste as well as leaves and tree branches. Stagnant waste has rotted, and emits a horrid stench.

There is so much filth in the river that local residents cannot use the water for bathing or washing. Apparently, the rubbish has been deliberately dumped into the river, despite the fact that a large trash container has been placed near the river. “Individuals on motorcycles usually just toss their garbage-filled plastic bags right into the water,” said local resident Ardana. Despite being quite close to the river, the

container that was deliberately placed there to accommodate people’s garbage, is left unused. As a result, the river has become filthy. Allegedly the container cannot accommodate the large volume of garbage generated by the customary market activities at Perung Sqaure that take place periodically. Japan to restart 1st reactor under new rules since crisis TOKYO — A power plant operator said it will restart a reactor in southern Japan on Tuesday, the first restart under new safety requirements following the Fukushima disaster and a milestone for the nation’s return to nuclear power. Kyushu Electric Power Co. said Monday that it will restart the No. 1 reactor at its Sendai nuclear plant Tuesday morning. The restart marks Japan’s return to nuclear energy, breaking a four-and-half-year nuclear power impasse since the 2011 meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan following the earthquake and tsunami. The Nuclear Regulation Authority affirmed the safety of the reactor and another one at the Sendai plant in September under stricter safety rules imposed after the accident, the worst since the 1986 Chernobyl explosion. The plans call for the second reactor to be restarted in October.

The Sendai No. 1 reactor is scheduled to start generating power Friday and reach full capacity next month. All of Japan’s nearly 50 workable reactors have been offline for repairs or safety checks. Police: Man who killed 8 had a dispute with woman victim

HOUSTON — A family of six children and two parents were fatally shot in the head at a Houston home by a man with a violent criminal history who had previously been in a contentious relationship with the mother, authorities said Sunday. David Conley, 48, was charged with capital murder in the deaths. Most of the victims had been handcuffed and some had been shot multiple times, said Sgt. Craig Clopton. The dead were identified as parents Dewayne Jackson, 50, his wife Valerie Jackson, 40, and children Nathaniel, 13, Dewayne, 10, Honesty, 11, Caleb, 9, Trinity, 7, and Jonah, 6. Nathaniel was believed to be Conley’s son from the relationship with Valerie Jackson. Police had earlier said that there were three adults and five children killed. “We do not — cannot — fully comprehend the motivation of an individual that would take the lives of so many innocent people. Especially the lives of the young ones,” said Chief Deputy Tim Cannon. “The killer’s motives appear to be related to a dispute with Valerie, who was his former domestic partner.” Conley, who is being held in Jail, didn’t appear at a court hearing Sunday where an arrest affidavit was read. The judge denied him bond. Conley doesn’t yet have an attorney. Authorities were first alerted about a problem at the home when a relative of Valerie Jackson’s contacted the sheriff’s office to conduct a welfare check there. A standoff ensued for several hours between Conley and authorities until Conley surrendered, said Clopton. Investigators declined to say when on Saturday the victims were shot or if any victims were alive when deputies first tried to enter the home. Conley told authorities that he discovered on Saturday morning that the locks had been changed at the home after he had moved out. He entered the home through an unlocked window, according to the affidavit. Court records show Conley’s criminal history dates back to at least 1988, with the most recent incident last month, when was charged with assault. In court documents, authorities say the suspect had been arrested for allegedly assaulting Valerie Jackson. The attack happened at the home where the bodies were found and documents say he had a dating relationship with her. Authorities declined to comment on assault charges Conley had faced in the past in connection with his relationship with Valerie Jackson or what prompted relatives to worry and request that deputies be sent to the home on Saturday. Male participants in the procession will carry bamboo tube containing palm wine, while women participants bring rice ball placed on a coconut leaf plate or tamas. Rice ball and palm wine become a gift given to senior figures of the local customary village. The gift is eaten together in a long pavilion located in the temple area. Furthermore, after the procession takes place at the clan temple, the next sequence of the ceremony is held at Pelisan Temple. Procession at this temple lasts relatively shorter because it is only meant to say prayers for invoking a blessing. Later, the procession is continued at Sang Telaga Temple located two kilometers from Pelisan Temple.

Rampant wildlife poaching, hamlet sets bylaw and puts up signs

BANGLI - The potentially devasting effect that rampant wildlife poaching could have on the environment has led resident of Pucangan hamlet, Kayubihi village, to stand up against this nefarious practice. Hamlet chief of Pucangan, I Wayan Sudirman, said that wild animals such as civet have recently started to be hunted and so they have created an animal preservation bylaw making such hunting illegal. Poaching not only threatens the ecosystem of all animals but also makes local residents uneasy as the hunting has been taking place at night. As a result the hamlet authorities have now prohibited the hunting of wildlife. “Hunting wildlife threatens the ecosystem and disturbs the peace, so we immediately created a ban in hunting,” said Sudirman. Sudirman explained that the poaching ban applies to all types of animals

and is intended to preserve the environment and maintain the wildlife some members of which have become increasing;ly scarce. Violators will be liable to fines worth IDR 2,000 per household (there are 800 households) and will also be required to perform a panyapuh (purificatory) rite. “This rule has been set forth in the awig-awig or customary bylaw. If violated, the offender will be imposed with sanctions,” he said. He also added that 3 x 2.5 meters large signs that read “NO HUNTING” have also been posted at several points, including at the entrance to the village and quiet residential areas within the

The next day the procession is followed with ngayab bhakti where oblation of each participant will be filled in with a duck. As the final procession, they will stab jero gede or sanctified buffalo. Blood of the buffalo is then applied onto forehead of each participant. “This is the end of fasting made by the participants,” he explained. He added that after completing the mawinten all the participants will take part in the pemaksan organization or clan temple, while women are coalesced into kadean organization. Sumbersari gas station sells mixed fuel NEGARA - A number of residents of Sumbersari, Melaya village, Melaya subdistrict, approached the management of Sumbersari gas station 54.82214 on Saturday morning (Aug. 8), to complain about damage caused to their vehicles by the fuel that they purchased there. Allegedly the Premium (gasoline) fuel had been mixed with diesel fuel, causing havoc on their engines. Sumbersari gas station employee, Kadek Hendra Ardiana, said that on Thursday night (Aug. 6), that the tank truck conductor had made an error while refilling the gas station tanks causing the two fuels to be mixed. Apparently, the tank truck with license plate DK 9493 AQ, driven by Nyoman Widya Putra with his conductor Mr. Patra were transporting 24 tons of fuel: 16 tons of diesel fuel and 8 tons of Premium fuel. The gas station purchased 8 tons of Premium fuel and 8 tons of diesel fuel. However, an error occurred when refilling the gas station fuel tank “The tank that should have been re-filled with Premium fuel was instead filled with Diesel fuel, but none realized until later,” he said. So far there have been approximately 50 motorcycle and three car owners who have complained. The fuel mix-up incident has been reported to gas station manager Mr. Diki, domiciled in Mojokerto who immediately took steps to address the issue. “Until now, the situation is looking quite favorable. Greek coast guard rescues 1,417 migrants over 3 days

KOS, Greece — Greece’s coast guard has rescued more than 1,400 migrants in nearly 60 search and rescue operations near several Greek islands in the eastern Aegean Sea over the past three days as the pace of new arrivals increase, authorities said Monday. Tens of thousands of people, many of them fleeing war and conflict in Syria and Afghanistan, have been making their way from the Turkish coast to nearby Greek islands in inflatable dinghies, overwhelming cash-strapped authorities on the islands. The vast majority then head to mainland Greece and from there, try to access more prosperous European Union countries by either walking across the Balkans from northern Greece, or sneaking onto Italy-bound ferries from the west. The 1,417 migrants rescued between Friday morning and Monday

morning were picked up at sea in 59 separate incidents off the coasts of the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Agathonisi and Kos, the coast guard said. Those figures do not include the hundreds of others who manage to reach the islands’ coasts themselves, walking to the main towns to turn themselves in to local authorities and receive registration papers. On the island of Kos alone, more than 150 migrants in at least six boats landed on the shore in the early hours of Monday morning. Some 40 Syrians waved and

cheered as their boat arrived at the popular tourist destination. Men jumped into the water to help women and children off the dinghy, with one man so overcome with emotion that he began to sob. The new arrivals add to the 124,000 migrants who have reached Greece by boat in the first seven months of 2015 alone, a staggering 750 percent increase from the same period last year, according to the United Nations’ refugee agency. INDONESIA Court rejects sex abuse lawsuit against international school

JAKARTA - A Jakarta court on Monday threw out a multi-million dollar sex abuse lawsuit against an international school, raising hopes for two teachers who were jailed in a related case that had triggered concerns about the justice system in Indonesia. The Jakarta Intercultural School, a U.S.-embassy backed school, was sued for $125 million last year by a parent who claimed her son had been sexually abused by staff on school grounds. Monday’s ruling came after two teachers, a Canadian national and an Indonesian national, were jailed in April for abusing kindergarten pupils in a separate criminal case that critics say was fraught with irregularities. Harry Ponto, a lawyer representing the school, told reporters Monday’s decision could affect those sentences. “Hopefully this case can have a positive impact for our teachers who we believe are innocent,” he said. Many expatriates and diplomats in Jakarta send their children to the school,

previously known as the Jakarta International School. “The lawsuit is not accepted because the charges are not clear and the evidence presented is not enough to prove wrongdoing on the part of the school,” Judge Haswandi told a packed Jakarta courtroom. JAKARTA - Indonesia is now open to joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement following U.S. President Barack Obama’s victory in a congressional battle over the pact, the country’s chief economic minister said on Friday. The TPP would cut trade barriers and harmonize standards across 12 Pacific rim economies, including Australia and Japan, that have a combined gross domestic product of $28 trillion. The government of Southeast Asia’s largest economy was initially opposed to joining the TPP but has had a change of heart since legislation vital to securing the deal was passed by the U.S. Senate in June, Coordinating Minister for Economics Sofyan Djalil said. “Many policymakers in Asia didn’t believe that President Obama will get the mandate,” Djalil told Reuters in an interview late on Friday. “TPP is now getting closer and closer to reality, and now the option is

to join it or you’re left out.” “Of course we have to look at it, we have to study it comprehensively ... But in principal, we don’t have any problem.” U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed confidence on Friday that the pact could be completed this year even though countries involved failed to overcome feuds over auto trade, dairy goods and next-generation drugs in their latest negotiations. Phelps made it 3 for 3 at the U.S. national championships Sunday night, winning the 200-meter individual medley with yet another time that would have been good enough for a world title if he had been allowed to compete at the biggest meet outside the Olympics. On the heels of brilliant performances in the 100 and 200 butterfly, Phelps set himself up as the favorite in all three races looking toward Rio. “I’m very happy where I am right now,” he said. “This is a great foundation. This is a place we really haven’t been in a long time leading up to an Olympics. I definitely wasn’t like this leading up to 2012. It’s probably been since 2007 that it’s been like this. I can sit here and argue with you that 2007 is probably the best year of my career. It’s probably the last time I had three events like this back to back to back.” Phelps was under world-record pace through the first three laps

LONDON — Two mistakes by new goalkeeper Petr Cech sent a much-hyped Arsenal side crashing to a 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham, while Liverpool’s start to the new Premier League season ended with a late 1-0 win at Stoke on Sunday. Marseille hits back at Bielsa after resignation MARSEILLE, France — Marseille has condemned Marcelo Bielsa’s sudden decision to resign as coach of the French club, accusing the Argentine on Sunday of putting his personal interests first. Bielsa quit over a contract dispute minutes after his players lost to Caen 1-0 in their opening French league match on Saturday. The former Argentina national coach was out of contract but had struck an agreement with club president Vincent Labrune to extend his tenure. Bielsa said he changed his mind because Marseille officials allegedly amended the terms of the new deal at the last minute. Marseille’s board of directors hit back Sunday, saying that the club “can’t submit itself to a single man’s rule.” “In no instance can Marseille be held prisoner of the demands of someone who puts his own interests well above those of the institution,” Marseille said in a statement. Bielsa, who said goodbye to his players at Marseille’s training center on Sunday morning, has been linked with a move to Mexico as a possible replacement for fired national coach Miguel Herrera but he insists he did not quit with another job lined up. Bielsa took over in 2014 and was widely credited for Marseille’s

return to form last season with his brand of attacking football. Marseille was in contention for the league title before a run of four straight defeats in April ended those hopes. The nine-time champions ultimately finished fourth, and allowed Andre-Pierre Gignac, Andre Ayew, Dimitri Payet, and Jeremy Morel to leave. The departures angered the fans, but Marseille compensated their loss with the signing of talented young players, and the arrival of veterans Lassana Diarra and Abou Diaby. Bielsa, who criticized club president Vincent Labrune for keeping him away from the recruitment process when he took his job, said this week he was “satisfied with the squad.” Labrune was stunned by Bielsa’s resignation. “I’m struggling to understand how Wednesday’s meeting on technical details of the deal (for Bielsa) ... created this hasty departure,” Labrune said. Bielsa’s assistant coach, Franck Passi, is interim coach. In 2004 Bielsa led Argentina to the Olympic title and runner-up in the Copa America. He also helped Chile qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
