NASHVILLE — Miley’s back, y’all. Miley Cyrus made her delayed-due-toillness return to the town where she grew up Thursday night, bringing a flying hot dog, a dwarf dressed as the Liberty Bell, a dozen recognizable hits, a taunt to the girls who beat her up in school and a lot of inappropriate touching. Drawing a crowd of mostly young women — and a hefty number of moms — the show was a little bit pop concert, a little bit late-night pay cable and a little bit great. In the audience: Two 20-something women with a gift for arts and crafts arrived at Cyrus’ homecoming concert with identical bedazzled shirts that read, “R.I.P. Hannah Montana.” Look no further than that for the official theme to Cyrus’ Bangerz Tour, a pastiche of weird culture that plays a lot like a YouTube channel devoted to absurdist performance art. The surprising thing, after the former teen television star raised such a lather last year with a highly memorable MTV Video Music Awards appearance, is how tame the show actually is. It’s true that Nashville is a pretty quiet town. And sure, Cyrus does simulate sex acts on stage during a few songs — Abe Lincoln has never seemed less presidential — and mentions drug use. But the woman whose twerking and foam finger started a national discussion balanced her naughty images and
saucier choreography with messages espousing personal freedom and a few moments of pop perfection. For the most part, the night — her fifth date since restarting a U.S. tour that was postponed for more than three months after an allergic reaction to antibiotics — was PG13, filled with images that are unavoidable on the Internet where much of Cyrus’ audience spends its time. The only thing pushing the show into truly R-rated territory was Cyrus’ spirited use of the F-word. The debate over Cyrus’ transformation from wholesome teen to a young woman exploring her sexuality hovered around the soldout show as mothers shepherded thousands of teenage girls into Bridgestone Arena, where the 21-year-old singer once attended shows as a teen herself. For some she was a guilty pleasure, and the presence of rolling papers, R-rated possibilities, booty shorts and inflat-
able bananas at the merch table only added to the feeling of things being taboo. Inside the arena, the crowd was all in as Cyrus gave something of a history lesson in over-the-top moments in pop music. For all the guff Cyrus has gotten, she’s not covering unfamiliar territory. Touching your special parts (Michael Jackson), well-endowed dancers expert in the butterfly (2 Live Crew), uncovered rear ends (David Lee Roth) are milestones passed decades ago. And to be clear, there were a lot of these things — a whole lot — during Cyrus’ 2 1/2-hour, 20-plus song set, along with flying kittens, inflatable dogs three stories tall, plushy dancers, giant tongues and even a simulated orgy. But there were also a lot of impressive moments where Cyrus showed her growing prowess as an entertainer. She pushed her voice to the edge at times while holding the attention of 16,000 people with just a microphone, and had moms and daughters singing every
word with the same gusto on major hits like “Wrecking Ball” and “Party in the USA.” Those were the moments that provided the real spectacle.

Bali International Summer School is an annual event held by Bali Foreign Affair Department under The Student Committee of Medical Faculty in Udayana University. The role of the department is to give information and communicate, also to coordinate in the area outside of Udayana University. The 2014 Bali International Summer School led by Kadek Dede Frisky Wiyanjana was held on August 7 through 13, 2014. The school presented the theme “Knowing The Prevention of Tropical Diseases for Traveller through Socio-Culture Approach”. The school consisted of academic and non academic activities such as lecture, workshop, talkshow, Student Project Presentation, Hospital Visit, Social Visit, water sport and cultural activities. The participants were taken to watch Kecak Dance, playing traditional Balinese games and visiting Kertalangu Village. The participants were coming from various countries such as Indonesia as the host, Germany, Netherlands, Tunisia, Sweden and Slovenia. The opening ceremony of Bali Summer School was held in Nikki Hotel Denpasar and closed by a farewell party in Pirates Bay, Nusa Dua.

Rimba Jimbaran opens New Kids’ Club
People keep Buleleng Festival area clean SINGARAJA - Environmental sanitation got highlight during the Buleleng Festival (Bulfest) 2014 activity. Since the opening on August 6 to the closing on August 10, the Buleleng Sanitation and Landscape Agency with its ‘yellow troop’ team cleaned up the rubbish around the area of Bulfest activities. A total of 60 janitors were deployed and spread evenly along the Jalan Pahlawan, Jalan Veteran and Jalan Ngurah Rai. By using tricycle waste bins, janitors went around to sweep and pick up waste of the Bulfest visitors. The Head of Buleleng Sanitation and Landscape Agency, Nyoman Genep, said that during the Bulfest activity his party involved a total of 60 janitors to help maintain the sanitation of the festival area as long as it was thronged by visitors. To that end, the tasks were divided into 6 zones, where the ‘yellow troop’ worked in shifts from the morning till night. “Each zone is handled by several teams to maintain the sanitation. Nevertheless, we still hope visitors to dispose their waste in place,” he said, Friday (Aug 8). At least the Bulfest moment could educate people to maintain environmental sanitation as well as support the Buleleng program to be free from plastic waste in 2015. The equipment such as organic and inorganic waste bins had been prepared by Buleleng Sanitation and Landscape Agency, while broom stick, scoop, plastic trash bags, trash bins and mobile tricycle trash bin were still operated to support the sanitation. “Education on the waste care is very helpful so that people will be disciplined to dispose waste in place,” he said. On Klumpu hilltop there is a oneroof junior-senior high school. Principal of the local school, Ketut Suweta, said on Friday (Aug 7) that the school still lacked of building. Initially, on the barren land was just established a one-roof elementary-junior high school since the academic year 2004/2005. Then, it was resumed with the establishment of one-roof junior-senior high school in the academic year 2010/2012. In other words, during the period the region did not have a high school. However, due to high interest of local students to learn, a one-roof junior-senior high school was established. Unfortunately, the high interest in learning was not accompanied with the increase in the quality of infrastructure. Its junior high school remained to lack of three classes. Meanwhile, the high school had just owned a building with two classrooms. Besides, the high school required six classrooms. To overcome the problem, high school students should learn in the afternoon. Thus, in the morning the high school building was taken advantage by junior high school students. Currently, the student of junior high school amounted to 227 people.
Meanwhile, the high school student came to 189 people. So far, the high school had graduated one generation. The one-roof junior-senior high school had 12 teachers. Similarly, it also lacked of teachers so that many teachers should teach both at junior high and high school every day. Despite in very limited condition, the junior and senior high school could pass 100 percent in the final examination last year. Suweta admitted that similar condition was widely experienced by other regions with the same geographical conditions. So, he expected local government to be really aware of the educational condition in Nusa Penida. Education on the islands required more attention, so that it would not kindle gap between the condition of educational infrastructures in the region and mainland Klungkung. “Geographical conditions have resulted in difficulties. Now, let’s build together, do not even abandon,” said Suweta. In response to such condition, the Secondary Education Division Head of Klungkung Education Agency, Ketut Suadnyana, said that his agency planned a new building for one-roof junior-senior high school at Klumpu
this year. Even, its groundbreaking ceremony was undertaken on Thursday (Aug 7). The budget was taken from Klungkung regional budget worth IDR 1.017 billion. As planned, one of the new building units would be constructed for 120 days. So, it could be completed and operated next November. With the addition of the new building for six classrooms, his party expected that all classes of junior and senior high school of Klumpu could learn in the morning. Construction of the new building funded with Klungkung main budget 2014 was also intended for the construction of classroom at the one-roof senior high school on Lembongan Island. Its value reached IDR 1.3 billion and the project was expected to be completed by this November. He realized that many schools, especially in the hilly areas, lacked of building infrastructures. Nevertheless, his party confirmed the Education Agency would make improvement gradually. To that end, in the next five years, condition of school infrastructure would be more representative to shore up the learning achievement of students. (kmb31)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WASHINGTON - Even if you don’t open a newspaper, turn on a television, log on to a computer or pull out a smartphone, you can get news -- from wearable technology. As wearables gain traction, news purveyors are eyeing these devices for their potential to deliver headlines and more to people who want to stay up to date. Some news apps already have the capacity to deliver news notifications, or full articles, to smartwatches or eyewear such as Google Glass. “We are going full speed on smartwatches,” said Gilles Raymond, the San Francisco-based chief executive of News Republic, a mobile app that delivers news to mobile devices from hundreds of outlets. Raymond told AFP he expects people will find it useful to get not only headlines but full articles on a smartwatch as the wearable trend revs up. “When the iPhone came out, people were saying that not one would read news on a phone. Now nobody is saying that,” said Raymond. “People will read articles on a watch. They may not read 300 articles, but people adapt quickly to technology.” Raymond founded News Republic in France and has expanded to other European markets as well as North America and China, aggregating news from hundreds of outlets, including AFP, Al-Jazeera, Reuters and The Associated Press. Roman Karachinsky, CEO of the news aggregation app News360, also sees a future for wearables, but mainly for quick notifications they might not otherwise see. “We want to change the formula from one where you go and seek information out to a world where information finds you when it’s relevant and useful,” Karachinsky said. He said the newly introduced Android Wear platform for Google allows for News360 alerts to be sent to some smartwatches, and to Google Glass. These alerts fulfill a need of getting information out quickly -- whether it is a sports score, stock market action or breaking news -- in an unobtrusive way. “Instead of digging around your pocket for your smartphone, now you can just look at your wrist or glance up to your Google Glass,” said Karachinsky. “It’s a very transformative experience.” It remains unclear at the moment how fast wearable technologies will catch on, and how people will use the devices. While News Republic’s Raymond sees a demand for full articles, he differs from News360 on Google Glass. But he said smartwatches may gain more traction when they become independent of smartphones, allowing people to shed their phones for some of the time. Roger Kay, analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates, said news on smartwatches and Google Glass will probably be limited to short items that can be absorbed in a glance. “The glanceability of it is important,” Kay said. “I don’t imagine people squinting at their watches to read articles; they have enough trouble reading on their phones.”

Police confirms no ISIS presence in Bali
DENPASAR - The chief of the Denpasar police resort in Bali confirmed that no Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) activity had so far been found in the island’s capital city. “Until now, we have received no information about ISIS development in Denpasar,” Senior Commissioner Djoko Hariutomo stated. Hariutomo, however, stressed that he had ordered his men to be vigilant and keep monitoring the situation in the community. Hariutomo emphasized that he will communicate with religious and community leaders with regard to preventing people from being influenced and being part
of the movement, which is now being considered as a threat to world security by several countries including Indonesia. Hariutomo noted that the police will tighten security measures to ensure that the network will not spread in the region. “We will secure the public by not profiling certain people,” he remarked. TOKYO — A new generation of Japanese architects is scoring success by reinterpreting the past. Unlike their predecessors, who modernized Japan with Western-style edifices, they talk of fluidly defining space with screens, innovatively blending with nature, taking advantage of earthy materials and incorporating natural light, all trademarks of Japanese design. And their sensibility that speaks to a human-oriented yet innovative everyday life is proving a hit abroad, said Erez Golani Solomon, professor of architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo. “Food and architecture,” said Solomon, stressing how the two are Japan’s most potent brands. “They are powerful — Japan’s strongest cultural identity.” Kengo Kuma, one of the star architects, finds he is in demand not only in Japan and in the West but also in places such as China. Among the major China projects for Kuma are the recent Xinjin Zhi Museum, whose sloping angles and repeated tile motifs are characteristically Kuma, and the still ongoing Yunnan Sales Center, a sprawling complex of shops, housing and a theater, where a wooden lattice decorates the main structure overlooking a pond. He also designs private homes for affluent Chinese who admire Zen philosophy
and want to incorporate that stark aesthetic into their daily lives, he said. Japanese architecture offers warmth and kindness as it is adept in the use of natural light and artisanal craftsmanship, such as bamboo and paper. It is “working together like music,” to create a comfortable and luxurious spot even in a cramped space, the basic principle of a Japanese tea house, Kuma said. “It’s part of our genetic makeup,” Kuma told The Associated Press, sitting in his Tokyo studio among elegant chairs designed by himself and others by by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and pointing with disgust at the vaulting skyscrapers visible from his window. DENPASAR - The number of Russian holiday makers visiting Bali has declined lately on escalation of conflicts in Ukraine and Middle East, an observer said. Russian tourists to Bali generally used chartered aircraft as there is no regular flight between Russia and Indonesia, leading tourist observer Made Sudana said. Generally, Russian holiday makers visited Bali in the first months of year, Sudana said. Now almost every months from January to June the number of Russian visitors to Bali declined, he noted. Based on official record of the Bali Tourism Office, the number
of Russian visitors to Bali shrank 12 percent to 29,783 in the first half of the year from 45,216 in the same period in 2013. The number, however, is expected to rise in the remaining months of the year. Russians make up only around 2.3 percent of foreign tourists based on arrival record at the Bali’s airport of Ngurah Rai. In January-June period this year the number of foreign visitors to Bali totaled 1,727,875 people. Sudana said despite the decline in the number of visitors from Russia, the total number of foreign visitors to Bali rose 15.73 percent in the first half of the year from 1,493,020 in the same period last year. Australians are still dominant in
number with 446,406 visitors in the same period followed by visitors from China reaching 264,840 and Malaysians 109,298. Meanwhile, the central bureau of statistics office (BPS) said star rated hotels in Bali recorded a decline in the length of stay of tourists to 2.95 days on the average in June from 3.36 days in May this year. “Foreign tourists stayed only for 3.23 days per visit as against 3.50 days in May and domestic guests stayed for 2.41 days as against 3.08 days in May,” head of the Bali BPS office Panusunan Siregar said. Star rated hotels in Bali recorded an occupancy rate of 62.10 percent in June, up from 61.01 percent in May.

Meanwhile, to meet the needs of diesel especially for fishermen, he had actually submitted to central government for the establishment of special petrol station for fishermen. However, the proposal did not work because many requirements were proposed by central government chiefly the Ministry of Maritime Affairs related to the matter. Among them, there should the supporting data on the potential of fish catch in an area, availability of catch resources, clean and clear land availability to road access. “All this time, special petrol stations for fishermen in some regions in Bali and other provinces are indeed through the assistance of the ministry. BANGLI - Evidently rubbish does not always become worthless stuff. When processed with considerable skill, rubbish can produce goods with high economic value and even equivalent to the value of gold. Not only that, waste processing activities can also create job opportunities for other people. For instance, such initiative has been carried out by a resident of Landih village, Bangli, Putu Sedan. After struggling for seven years with the profession as scavenger in the Bangli regional landfill, Sedan is now trying to process rubbish into something useful for society. Organic waste dumped by people in the landfill is processed into fertilizer to help fertilize plants. He said that other than indeed wishing to generate economic value from waste, the organic waste processing having been done since the past few years was driven by his concern to the utilization of chemi-
cal fertilizers on crops. According to him, the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture would provide longterm adverse impact on the health and condition of the soil. “Besides, it is also meant to prepare farmers in facing scarcity of urea fertilizer whose subsidies have been reduced by the government,” he explained. Armed with the reason, along with several colleagues coalesced into the Sanja Mas scavenger he focused on processing organic waste into fertilizer. Without adequate knowledge about organic fertilizer processing technique, he was able to produce 3 tons of organic fertilizer each day just armed with his strong determination. The organic fertilizer raw materials were obtained from the results of sorting waste at the landfill. In the process, the organic waste was blended with chicken manure, cow manure and some composting microorganism to help decompose the soil. Subsequently the mixture was
fermented for several days. By using the machine assisted by central government, the materials were fermented, chopped and then sifted. “After that, the products are ready to pack,” he said. Sedan said that all this time his organic fertilizer products had been marketed to local community. However, he acknowledged the interest of farmers to use organic fertilizers on their crops was not much. To prove the superiority of the organic fertilizer on crops, he claimed to have been developing a pilot project. “All this time, farmers would only like to know the quality of the use of organic fertilizers on plants. On that account, at this time I am trying to make a pilot project,” he added. From the organic waste processing activities, he was able to hire some local residents at the village to help the treatment process. In addition, he also empowered 30 local scavengers to help sort the rubbish in the landfill. (ina)

Fifty years ago Sunday, reacting to reports of a U.S. Navy encounter with enemy warships in the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam — reports long since discredited — President Lyndon Johnson signed a resolution passed overwhelmingly by Congress that historians call the crucial catalyst for deep American involvement in the Vietnam War. Many also see it as a cautionary tale that has gone unheeded. “I think we are probably a bit better informed now, but I don’t think that makes us a lot safer,” says Edwin Moises, author of “Tonkin Gulf and the Escalation of the Vietnam War.” Every era brings new foreign policy and political challenges, said the Clemson University history professor, “and I think it is utterly unpredictable what kind of misunderstandings may come along.” “If you ask whether we learned
anything, I would say not enough,” says former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, a Florida Democrat who opposed the war in Iraq, long after Tonkin and Vietnam. In the last five decades, Tonkin has not kept Washington from backing wars, but it has shadowed relations between presidents and Congress. Debates about foreign conflicts, whether in Bosnia, Syria or Iraq, have also been referendums on trust. Is the war really necessary? Is the president telling everything he knows? What should be the parameters, if any, for military action? Graham was chairman of the intelligence committee when the Senate debated, in the fall of 2002, whether to authorize military action in Iraq. Did Saddam Hussein, as alleged by President George W. Bush’s administration, possess weapons of mass destruction?
Graham found the case “soft and unreliable” and voted no. But most of his colleagues disagreed. The Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were barely a year old, and the midterm election was just a month away, a difficult time to turn away the president or the Pentagon. The Senate approved the Iraq resolution by 77-23, the House 296-133. A U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq, opening a conflict that lasted for years. As Graham and others feared, the weapons were not found. Former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia, who had been badly wounded in Vietnam, was among those who supported the 2002 legislation. “I can’t believe I volunteered for one war, which turned out to be a massive tragedy for the United States, and I went to the Senate and voted for another war, which turned out to be a massive tragedy,” he says. “It was right before my reelection, and I felt compelled for my own hide,” explains Cleland, who nonetheless was defeated. “It became the worst vote I made in my life.”

JAKARTA - International health law and forensic experts will hold a World Congress on Medical Law in Nusa Dua, Bali, next August 22-24, 2014. “The congress will among other things discuss law enforcement in health-related criminal case, health law, medical law, legal medicine, forensic medicine, bioethics and medical ethics,” said President of the Congress M Nasser. According to him the congress will be participated in by law experts, forensic doctors and law practitioners in health-related case from countries around the world. The congress aims to allow health law experts to share their experiences in dealing with various criminal cases in their respective countries. Indonesia is named as the host of the World Congress on Medical Law this year. The congress in Bali will be held in cooperation with the Association of Medical Law Society Indonesia (MHKI). Apart from law and health experts, the congress will also be attended by Indonesia’s Attorney General, Chief of the Supreme Court, Chief of the Constitutional Court and Chief of the National Police.

SEMARAPURA - Abrasion increasingly threatens the entire coastline in Klungkung County. Other than on mainland Bali, the abrasion to coastal area also happens to Jungut Batu area. The area known as tourism resort also suffers a severe abrasion. Such condition was justified headman of Jungut Batu, Made Gede Suryawan, when met at Jungut Batu recently. Coastal areas at the region stretched over two kilometers. Most of the area had been eroded. As the result, it made the face of Jungut Batu known as tourist destination slightly tarnished. Quite a lot of foreign tourists complained. Actually, the region was a favorite tourist destination in Bali, especially Klungkung. The current abrasion was quite severe. Moreover, there would be the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Surely it increased the
concerns of local residents against coastal abrasion at Jungut Batu. He admitted to have reported the condition to local government. Even, the regent of Klungkung and his staff had inspected the condition of Jungut Batu coastal area. He said that local government asked the headmen to inventory of the real damage caused by the abrasion on Jungut Batu Beach. So, it could be proposed for repair to be further allocated through the Klungkung regional budget. “Without immediate repair, the abrasion will spread to other embankment. As a result, the road access to tourist accommodation can be broken,” he said. Besides, the shoreline abrasion also threatened the existence of numerous local tourist accommodations located on the shoreline. On that account, construction of the coastal embankments should be realized to prevent further damage.
Abrasion condition in the area of Nusa Penida islands (including Lembongan and Jungut Batu) had occurred for a long time but it obtained minimal handling. As seen on the coast of Nusa Gede, virtually all the local beaches had been eroded by abrasion. At the same time, it threatened the existence of local seaweed farmers because they did activities on the coast every day. Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, already responded to the coastal abrasion in the region of Klungkung. The abrasion was quite severe and required immediate handling. He said to have attempted by taking measures through gradual repair and continued to establish communication with the BaliPenida River Agency and central government. The IrAn-140 is a twin-engine turboprop plane based on Ukrainian technology that is assembled under license in Iran. It is a version of the Antonov An-140 regional plane and can carry up to 52 passengers. Mehrabad, located in western Tehran, is the busier of two main airports serving the Iranian capital, and primarily handles domestic flights. Most international flights use the newer Imam Khomeini International Airport. Iran has suffered a series of airplane crashes, blamed on its aging aircraft and poor maintenance. Many of the Boeing aircraft in state-run Iran Air’s fleet were bought before the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which disrupted ties with the U.S. and Europe.
Iranian airlines, including those run by the state, are chronically strapped for cash, and maintenance has suffered, experts say. U.S. sanctions prevent Iran from updating its American aircraft and make it difficult to get European spare parts or planes as well. The country has come to rely on Russian aircraft, many of them Soviet-era planes that are harder to get parts for since the Soviet Union’s fall. In March of this year, a small plane belonging to the State Aviation Organization crashed while on a test flight near the tourist resort of Kish Island, killing all four crew members. The last major airliner crash in Iran happened in January 2011, when an Iran Air Boeing 727 broke to pieces on impact while trying an emergency landing in a snowstorm in northwestern Iran, killing at least 77 people.

JAYAPURA - Indonesian police have arrested two French journalists who were reporting on the separatist movement in the restive eastern region of Papua, police and embassy officials said Friday. The detained pair are documentary makers Thomas Dandois, 40, and Valentine Bourrat, 29, from Franco-German television channel Arte, a spokesman for the French embassy in Jakarta told AFP. They are accused of reporting illegally, as they only had tourist visas, and could face up to five years in prison and a 500 million rupiah ($42,000) fine, Papua province police spokesman Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said. Dandois was arrested Thursday at a hotel in the city of Wamena with three members of what Hartono described as an armed criminal gang. That is the term generally used by police in Papua to refer to the separatist group the Free Papua Movement (OPM). He gave no details on Bourrat’s arrest. They are in custody in Jayapura, the capital of Papua province. Indonesia’s central government keeps a tight grip on Papua and rarely grants foreign journalists full access to report independently in the
region. Foreign NGOs are also restricted from operating there. “We were concerned that (the French nationals’) activities were part of a plan to create insecurity and instability in Papua,” Hartono said. “The pair admit to working as foreign journalists for... Arte,” he added. “But we are continuing to investigate who Valentine and Thomas are and their purpose in Wamena.” Video footage, audio recordings and the journalists’ phones had been seized, said Hartono. He said the separatists at the hotel were from the highlands of Lanny Jaya district, where five OPM members were killed in a shootout with the military last week. The shootout came after two policemen were shot dead, killings that were blamed on the separatist movement. The OPM has for decades waged a lowlevel insurgency against Indonesian rule over the resource-rich but poor, ethnically Melanesian region. BANDA ACEH - An Indonesian couple reunited with their daughter a decade after she was swept away by the 2004 tsunami said Friday they were now hopeful of finding their son, who also went missing in the disaster. Raudhatul Jannah, then aged four, and her seven-year-old brother were carried away clinging to wooden planks when huge waves struck their home in Aceh province on December 26, 2004. The children’s mother, Jamaliah, and her husband survived the quake-triggered tsunami that killed tens of thousands in Aceh, on western Sumatra island, and had long ago given up hope of finding their children alive. But in June, Jamaliah’s brother spotted a girl in an Aceh village walking home from school who bore a striking resemblance to Jannah. He made inquiries and found out that the girl had been caught up in the tsunami, and was swept from Aceh to remote islands southwest of the province. She was taken back to the mainland by a fisherman, whose elderly mother raised the youngster. Jannah’s parents, who moved to the neighbouring province of North Sumatra following the tsunami, travelled to Aceh soon afterwards to meet the girl, and firmly believe it is their missing daughter, now aged 14. Jamaliah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, on Thursday said it was a “miracle” her daughter had been found and described how she could not stop the “tears from flowing” during an emotional reunion. Jannah this week moved to North Sumatra to live with her birth parents, and the couple say they are now hopeful they can find their son. “We are very hopeful we can find her brother,” Jannah’s father, Septi Rangkuti, told reporters. “We have reported our son
missing to the police so they can help us find out his whereabouts.” Rangkuti, 52, believes his son Arif Pratama Rangkuti may still be on the Banyak Islands, an archipelago some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the Aceh coast where the children ended up after being swept away. For around a year, they lived with fishermen and their families on the islands. A fisherman wanted to adopt both of them, but ended up taking just Jannah as he did not think his family could provide for two more children. His mother, Sarwani, was the one who mainly cared for Jannah when she was growing up. Rangkuti admitted he did not believe his daughter could be alive when his brother-in-law first spotted Jannah. “There’s no way that’s my daughter, I thought, because it had already been 10 years,” he said, speaking in the capital of Aceh province, Banda Aceh, where the family had travelled to meet journalists. But he went on: “When we saw her, we knew, we felt the bond right away.” “If we need to do a DNA test, then we are prepared to, if people don’t believe us. But we are sure she is our daughter,” he added. Jannah, who appeared shy and overwhelmed by the media attention, told reporters: “I am very happy I can be with my mother and father again.” She also said she was happy to meet her younger brother, who was born after the tsunami, for the first time. Sarwani, who goes by one name, said Jannah’s adoptive family were delighted the teenager had found her birth parents. “We are very happy they have reunited. She will always be part of our family, and actually, we now all feel like one big family,” she said. Venus Williams upset little sister Serena 6-7(2) 6-2 6-3 on Saturday to register the first win over her top ranked sibling in five years and move into the Rogers Cup final in Montreal. The meeting marked the 25th time the sisters had squared off but the first time Venus had come out on top since a 2009 semi-finals encounter in Dubai. World number one Serena holds a 14-11 lead in their head-to-heads after coming out on top in their previous five encounters, including the 2009 Wimbledon final. Clashes between the pair, which at one time were an almost regular and welcome occurrence on tennis courts around the world, have become rare and their meeting in Montreal was just the second since the 2009 Tour championships. The siblings have won 106 WTA Tour singles titles, including 24 grand slams, between them. “It was a tough match out there,” said Venus, who will meet Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska in Sunday’s final. Surrounded by family, friends and fans in a city welcoming him home, James delivered a line he’s been waiting to say for four years. “I love you,” he told the crowd of nearly 25,000. “I’m back.” James then dropped the microphone and left the stage as fireworks exploded about InfoCision Stadium, illuminating the Akron sky. The NBA superstar, who re-signed with Cleveland last month, said Friday he intends to play the rest of his career with the Cavaliers, the team he returned to after winning two NBA titles in Miami. When he signed a two-year, $41 million contract that included an option after one year, there was speculation he would one day test free agency again. The contract made Cleveland fans nervous, but they can now relax. “I don’t plan on going nowhere,” James said. “I don’t have the energy to do it again.” James, who returned to Northeast Ohio after four seasons with the Heat, was welcomed back with open arms. Fans waited in line for six hours for a prime seat for the event on the University of Akron campus, not far from where the 29-year-old James bounced his first basketball. Hulk double as Zenit wins 8-1 in Russian league Associated Press Writer
MOSCOW — Hulk scored twice as Zenit St Petersburg underlined its Russian Premier League title credentials with an 8-1 thrashing of Torpedo Moscow on Saturday. The emphatic win sends Zenit provisionally top of the table after two games of the new season, level on points with defending champion CSKA Moscow, which beat Mordovia Saransk 1-0 earlier Saturday. As well as the double for Brazil striker Hulk, Zenit coach Andre Villas-Boas saw his other strikers Jose Rondon and Alexander Kerzhakov score two goals each. Also on target for the hosts were full back Igor Smolnikov and midfielder Oleg Shatov, before Dmitry Aidov managed a late consolation for newly promoted Torpedo. The match was played behind closed doors as part of Zenit’s punishment for an incident last season when fans invaded the pitch and one of them attacked a Dynamo Moscow player.
The win continues strong league form for Zenit, who beat Arsenal Tula 4-0 last week, but were made to work hard in Europe in midweek, eventually beating Cypriot club AEL Limassol 3-1 over two legs. CSKA struggled to break down newly promoted Mordovia, only prevailing after Seydou Doumbia was fouled by his former teammate Viktor Vasin and converted the resulting penalty on 79 minutes. establishing himself in the first team and he has only made 35 appearances overall. He has played 44 times for the Netherlands, scoring five goals, but did not feature in the squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. LONDON - Manchester City’s French midfielder Samir Nasri has decided to quit international football over a breakdown in his relationship with national coach Didier Deschamps and the French media. The 27-year-old playmaker won the Premier League last season with City but was left out of the France squad for this year’s World Cup in Brazil, where the side reached the quarter-finals. Deschamps later filed a legal complaint for ‘public insult’ against Nasri’s girlfriend, Anara Atanes, for messages she posted on Twitter after the player was omitted from the France squad. “Let’s face it, as long as he (Deschamps) is going to be the manager I don’t think I have a shot after everything that has happened,” Nasri told reporters before Sunday’s Community Shield against his former club Arsenal.

Venus Williams upset little sister Serena 6-7(2) 6-2 6-3 on Saturday to register the first win over her top ranked sibling in five years and move into the Rogers Cup final in Montreal. The meeting marked the 25th time the sisters had squared off but the first time Venus had come out on top since a 2009 semi-finals encounter in Dubai. World number one Serena holds a 14-11 lead in their head-to-heads after coming out on top in their previous five encounters, including the 2009 Wimbledon final. Clashes between the pair, which at one time were an almost regular and welcome occurrence on tennis courts around the world, have become rare and their meeting in Montreal was just the second since the 2009 Tour championships. The siblings have won 106 WTA Tour singles titles, including 24 grand slams, between them. “It was a tough match out there,” said Venus, who will meet Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska in Sunday’s final. Third seed Radwanska beat Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 7-6(1) 7-6(3) to advance to her second final of the year. “I don’t think we played for a number of years, as well. It’s not like we’ve been playing year in and year out,”
added Venus. “I definitely expected a tough match. She played well. She hit so many aces. “What’s so unique about the situation is that we’re both very good players. “I think typically you may have some siblings, one is quite good, one is not as good, so you kind of know what the result is, or the one that’s better knows they’re going to win. “I think we both know when we walk out there, it’s not like you’re guaranteed a win. I think that’s what makes it challenging for both of us.” While a Williams-Williams matchup is one tennis fans have always looked forward to, for the sisters it is something they could live without. There was little excitement when the match was over, the two players walking slowly to the net and hugging briefly. Venus’s reaction at ending her sister’s Rogers Cup title defense was
muted as she turned and offered a small wave to the crowd before slumping into her courtside chair and staring blankly across the court. If losing to her sister stung Serena, she hid it well. “For me it was just a regular match,” she shrugged. “Obviously she’s my sister but I still want to go out there and try to play well and try to win. “I think Venus played a great match. It was what it was. “Obviously I always want her to do the best that she can. AKRON, Ohio — LeBron James attracted a crowd of nearly 25,000 to his official homecoming to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, and saved the biggest moment for last. Surrounded by family, friends and fans in a city welcoming him home, James delivered a line he’s been waiting to say for four years. “I love you,” he told the crowd of nearly 25,000. “I’m back.” James then dropped the microphone and left the stage as fireworks exploded about InfoCision Stadium, illuminating the Akron sky. The NBA superstar, who re-signed with Cleveland last month, said Friday he intends to play the rest of his career with the Cavaliers, the team he returned to after winning two NBA titles in Miami. When he signed a two-year, $41 million contract that included an option after one year, there was speculation he would one day test free agency again. The contract made Cleveland fans nervous, but they can now relax. “I don’t plan on going nowhere,” James said. “I don’t have the energy to do it again.” James, who returned to Northeast Ohio after four seasons with the Heat, was welcomed back with open arms. Fans waited in line for six hours for a prime seat for the event on the University of Akron campus, not far from where the 29-year-old James bounced his first basketball. So I’m looking forward to it. He’s a great piece.” As for David Blatt, the former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach hired by Cleveland in June, James did some research on his offense and likes what he’s seen. “I watched all his clips form him coaching Maccabi and I kind of broke them down to see how I fit and obviously I can fit in every position on the floor,” he said. TOKYO — A tropical storm was moving out into the Sea of Japan on Sunday after lashing the country with rain and wind, leaving one person dead, more than 50 injured and prompting evacuation alerts for about 1.2 million residents near swollen rivers. Tropical Storm Halong disrupted land and air traffic as Japan began its annual “Obon” Buddhist holiday week. Japan was also shaken Sunday afternoon by a magnitude-6.1 earthquake that struck off the northeastern coast. There was no danger of a tsunami, and there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage. The Nuclear Regulation Authority said nuclear facilities in the area remained intact. Originally a typhoon, Halong was downgraded to a tropical storm as it approached the southwest coast and made two landfalls — over Shikoku Island and Hyogo prefecture in western Japan. It was on track to exit into the Sea of Japan from the northern coast near Kyoto later Sunday, and further lose strength in the next 12 hours. Japan’s Meteorological Agen-
cy issued the highest alert for heavy rain in Mie prefecture in central Japan, prompting two towns to order about 570,000 residents to move away from swollen rivers. Another 600,000 people were advised to evacuate across the country. Some of the evacuation advisories in western Japan were later lifted as the storm moved farther north. In Iwate prefecture in northern Japan, a 78-year-old man was found dead late Saturday after plunging into a swollen irrigation canal at his farm. Japan’s public television NHK said 52 people were injured in the storm. More than 200 flights were canceled, stranding thousands of holidaymakers at airports around the country. The rainstorm also flooded about 330 homes and damaged 70 others in western Japan. The storm, packing winds of up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) per hour, was expected to dump 30 centimeters (12 inches) of rain in central Japan by Monday morning. The meteorological agency warned of landslides and floods, and predicted heavy rain and strong wind in Tokyo and northern Japan through Monday.

TEHRAN, Iran — A regional passenger plane assembled in Iran crashed Sunday while taking off from the country’s capital, Tehran, killing 39 and injuring another nine onboard, according to a senior transportation official and state media. Deputy Minister of Transportation Ahmad Majidi provided the latest casualty figures in an appearance on state TV. The channel earlier reported that all 48 people onboard had died. mangled but largely intact tail section was torn from the fuselage and came to rest on a nearby road. The IrAn-140 is a twin-engine turboprop plane based on Ukrainian technology that is assembled under license in Iran. It is a version of the Antonov An-140 regional plane and can carry up to 52 passengers. Most international flights use the newer Imam Khomeini International Airport. Iran has suffered a series of airplane crashes, blamed on its aging aircraft and poor maintenance. Many of the Boeing aircraft in state-run Iran Air’s fleet were bought before the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which disrupted ties with the U.S. and Europe.
Iranian airlines, including those run by the state, are chronically strapped for cash, and maintenance has suffered, experts say. U.S. sanctions prevent Iran from updating its American aircraft and make it difficult to get European spare parts or planes as well. The country has come to rely on Russian aircraft, many of them Soviet-era planes that are harder to get parts for since the Soviet Union’s fall. In March of this year, a small plane belonging to the State Aviation Organization crashed while on a test flight near the tourist resort of Kish Island, killing all four crew members. The last major airliner crash in Iran happened in January 2011, when an Iran Air Boeing 727 broke to pieces on impact while trying an emergency landing in a snowstorm in northwestern Iran, killing at least 77 people.

JAYAPURA - Indonesian police have arrested two French journalists who were reporting on the separatist movement in the restive eastern region of Papua, police and embassy officials said Friday. The detained pair are documentary makers Thomas Dandois, 40, and Valentine Bourrat, 29, from Franco-German television channel Arte, a spokesman for the French embassy in Jakarta told AFP. They are accused of reporting illegally, as they only had tourist visas, and could face up to five years in prison and a 500 million rupiah ($42,000) fine, Papua province police spokesman Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said. Dandois was arrested Thursday at a hotel in the city of Wamena with three members of what Hartono described as an armed criminal gang. That is the term generally used by police in Papua to refer to the separatist group the Free Papua Movement (OPM). He gave no details on Bourrat’s arrest. They are in custody in Jayapura, the capital of Papua province. Indonesia’s central government keeps a tight grip on Papua and rarely grants foreign journalists full access to report independently in the
region. Foreign NGOs are also restricted from operating there. “We were concerned that (the French nationals’) activities were part of a plan to create insecurity and instability in Papua,” Hartono said. “The pair admit to working as foreign journalists for... Arte,” he added. “But we are continuing to investigate who Valentine and Thomas are and their purpose in Wamena.” Video footage, audio recordings and the journalists’ phones had been seized, said Hartono. He said the separatists at the hotel were from the highlands of Lanny Jaya district, where five OPM members were killed in a shootout with the military last week. The shootout came after two policemen were shot dead, killings that were blamed on the separatist movement. The OPM has for decades waged a lowlevel insurgency against Indonesian rule over the resource-rich but poor, ethnically Melanesian region. Normally foreign journalists detained for illegally reporting in Papua are deported. The children’s mother, Jamaliah, and her husband survived the quake-triggered tsunami that killed tens of thousands in Aceh, on western Sumatra island, and had long ago given up hope of finding their children alive. But in June, Jamaliah’s brother spotted a girl in an Aceh village walking home from school who bore a striking resemblance to Jannah. He made inquiries and found out that the girl had been caught up in the tsunami, and was swept from Aceh to remote islands southwest of the province. She was taken back to the mainland by a fisherman, whose elderly mother raised the youngster. Jannah’s parents, who moved to the neighbouring province of North Sumatra following the tsunami, travelled to Aceh soon afterwards to meet the girl, and firmly believe it is their missing daughter, now aged 14. Jamaliah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, on Thursday said it was a “miracle” her daughter had been found and described how she could not stop the “tears from flowing” during an emotional reunion. Jannah this week moved to North Sumatra to live with her birth parents, and the couple say they are now hopeful they can find their son. “We are very hopeful we can find her brother,” Jannah’s father, Septi Rangkuti, told reporters. “We have reported our son
missing to the police so they can help us find out his whereabouts.” Rangkuti, 52, believes his son Arif Pratama Rangkuti may still be on the Banyak Islands, an archipelago some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the Aceh coast where the children ended up after being swept away. For around a year, they lived with fishermen and their families on the islands. A fisherman wanted to adopt both of them, but ended up taking just Jannah as he did not think his family could provide for two more children. His mother, Sarwani, was the one who mainly cared for Jannah when she was growing up. Rangkuti admitted he did not believe his daughter could be alive when his brother-in-law first spotted Jannah. “There’s no way that’s my daughter, I thought, because it had already been 10 years,” he said, speaking in the capital of Aceh province, Banda Aceh, where the family had travelled to meet journalists. But he went on: “When we saw her, we knew, we felt the bond right away.” “If we need to do a DNA test, then we are prepared to, if people don’t believe us. But we are sure she is our daughter,” he added. Jannah, who appeared shy and overwhelmed by the media attention, told reporters: “I am very happy I can be with my mother and father again.” She also said she was happy to meet her younger brother, who was born after the tsunami, for the first time. Sarwani, who goes by one name, said Jannah’s adoptive family were delighted the teenager had found her birth parents. “We are very happy they have reunited. She will always be part of our family, and actually, we now all feel like one big family,” she said. The tsunami killed more than 170,000 people in Aceh, which was the worst-hit area, and tens of thousands more in other countries around the Indian Ocean.

International medical law experts to hold meeting in Bali Antara
JAKARTA - International health law and forensic experts will hold a World Congress on Medical Law in Nusa Dua, Bali, next August 22-24, 2014. “The congress will among other things discuss law enforcement in health-related criminal case, health law, medical law, legal medicine, forensic medicine, bioethics and medical ethics,” said President of the Congress M Nasser. According to him the congress will be participated in by law experts, forensic doctors and law practitioners in health-related case from countries around the world. The congress aims to allow health law experts to share their experiences in dealing with various criminal cases in their respective countries. Indonesia is named as the host of the World Congress on Medical Law this year. The congress in Bali will be held in cooperation with the Association of Medical Law Society Indonesia (MHKI). Apart from law and health experts, the congress will also be attended by Indonesia’s Attorney General, Chief of the Supreme Court, Chief of the Constitutional Court and Chief of the National Police.

SEMARAPURA - Abrasion increasingly threatens the entire coastline in Klungkung County. Other than on mainland Bali, the abrasion to coastal area also happens to Jungut Batu area. The area known as tourism resort also suffers a severe abrasion. Such condition was justified headman of Jungut Batu, Made Gede Suryawan, when met at Jungut Batu recently. Coastal areas at the region stretched over two kilometers. Most of the area had been eroded. As the result, it made the face of Jungut Batu known as tourist destination slightly tarnished. Quite a lot of foreign tourists complained. Actually, the region was a favorite tourist destination in Bali, especially Klungkung. The current abrasion was quite severe. Moreover, there would be the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Surely it increased the
concerns of local residents against coastal abrasion at Jungut Batu. He admitted to have reported the condition to local government. Even, the regent of Klungkung and his staff had inspected the condition of Jungut Batu coastal area. He said that local government asked the headmen to inventory of the real damage caused by the abrasion on Jungut Batu Beach. So, it could be proposed for repair to be further allocated through the Klungkung regional budget. “Without immediate repair, the abrasion will spread to other embankment. As a result, the road access to tourist accommodation can be broken,” he said. Besides, the shoreline abrasion also threatened the existence of numerous local tourist accommodations located on the shoreline. On that account, construction of the coastal embankments should be realized to prevent further damage.
Abrasion condition in the area of Nusa Penida islands (including Lembongan and Jungut Batu) had occurred for a long time but it obtained minimal handling. As seen on the coast of Nusa Gede, virtually all the local beaches had been eroded by abrasion. At the same time, it threatened the existence of local seaweed farmers because they did activities on the coast every day. Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, already responded to the coastal abrasion in the region of Klungkung. The abrasion was quite severe and required immediate handling. He said to have attempted by taking measures through gradual repair and continued to establish communication with the BaliPenida River Agency and central government. BANGLI - Evidently rubbish does not always become worthless stuff. When processed with considerable skill, rubbish can produce goods with high economic value and even equivalent to the value of gold. Not only that, waste processing activities can also create job opportunities for other people. For instance, such initiative has been carried out by a resident of Landih village, Bangli, Putu Sedan. After struggling for seven years with the profession as scavenger in the Bangli regional landfill, Sedan is now trying to process rubbish into something useful for society. Organic waste dumped by people in the landfill is processed into fertilizer to help fertilize plants. He said that other than indeed wishing to generate economic value from waste, the organic waste processing having been done since the past few years was driven by his concern to the utilization of chemi-
cal fertilizers on crops. According to him, the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture would provide longterm adverse impact on the health and condition of the soil. “Besides, it is also meant to prepare farmers in facing scarcity of urea fertilizer whose subsidies have been reduced by the government,” he explained. Armed with the reason, along with several colleagues coalesced into the Sanja Mas scavenger he focused on processing organic waste into fertilizer. Without adequate knowledge about organic fertilizer processing technique, he was able to produce 3 tons of organic fertilizer each day just armed with his strong determination. The organic fertilizer raw materials were obtained from the results of sorting waste at the landfill. In the process, the organic waste was blended with chicken manure, cow manure and some composting microorganism to help decompose the soil. Subsequently the mixture was
fermented for several days. By using the machine assisted by central government, the materials were fermented, chopped and then sifted. “After that, the products are ready to pack,” he said. Sedan said that all this time his organic fertilizer products had been marketed to local community. However, he acknowledged the interest of farmers to use organic fertilizers on their crops was not much. To prove the superiority of the organic fertilizer on crops, he claimed to have been developing a pilot project. “All this time, farmers would only like to know the quality of the use of organic fertilizers on plants. On that account, at this time I am trying to make a pilot project,” he added. From the organic waste processing activities, he was able to hire some local residents at the village to help the treatment process. In addition, he also empowered 30 local scavengers to help sort the rubbish in the landfill. (ina)

Fifty years ago Sunday, reacting to reports of a U.S. Navy encounter with enemy warships in the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam — reports long since discredited — President Lyndon Johnson signed a resolution passed overwhelmingly by Congress that historians call the crucial catalyst for deep American involvement in the Vietnam War. Many also see it as a cautionary tale that has gone unheeded. “I think we are probably a bit better informed now, but I don’t think that makes us a lot safer,” says Edwin Moises, author of “Tonkin Gulf and the Escalation of the Vietnam War.” Every era brings new foreign policy and political challenges, said the Clemson University history professor, “and I think it is utterly unpredictable what kind of misunderstandings may come along.” “If you ask whether we learned
anything, I would say not enough,” says former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, a Florida Democrat who opposed the war in Iraq, long after Tonkin and Vietnam. In the last five decades, Tonkin has not kept Washington from backing wars, but it has shadowed relations between presidents and Congress. Debates about foreign conflicts, whether in Bosnia, Syria or Iraq, have also been referendums on trust. Is the war really necessary? Is the president telling everything he knows? What should be the parameters, if any, for military action? Graham was chairman of the intelligence committee when the Senate debated, in the fall of 2002, whether to authorize military action in Iraq. Did Saddam Hussein, as alleged by President George W. Bush’s administration, possess weapons of mass destruction?
Graham found the case “soft and unreliable” and voted no. But most of his colleagues disagreed. The Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were barely a year old, and the midterm election was just a month away, a difficult time to turn away the president or the Pentagon. The Senate approved the Iraq resolution by 77-23, the House 296-133. A U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq, opening a conflict that lasted for years. As Graham and others feared, the weapons were not found. Former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia, who had been badly wounded in Vietnam, was among those who supported the 2002 legislation. “I can’t believe I volunteered for one war, which turned out to be a massive tragedy for the United States, and I went to the Senate and voted for another war, which turned out to be a massive tragedy,” he says. “It was right before my reelection, and I felt compelled for my own hide,” explains Cleland, who nonetheless was defeated. “It became the worst vote I made in my life.”

WASHINGTON - Even if you don’t open a newspaper, turn on a television, log on to a computer or pull out a smartphone, you can get news -- from wearable technology. As wearables gain traction, news purveyors are eyeing these devices for their potential to deliver headlines and more to people who want to stay up to date. Some news apps already have the capacity to deliver news notifications, or full articles, to smartwatches or eyewear such as Google Glass. “We are going full speed on smartwatches,” said Gilles Raymond, the San Francisco-based chief executive of News Republic, a mobile app that delivers news to mobile devices from hundreds of outlets. Raymond told AFP he expects people will find it useful to get not only headlines but full articles on a smartwatch as the wearable trend revs up. “When the iPhone came out, people were saying that not one would read news on a phone. Now nobody is saying that,” said Raymond. “People will read articles on a watch. They may not read 300 articles, but people adapt quickly to technology.” Raymond founded News Republic in France and has expanded to other European markets as well as North America and China, aggregating news from hundreds of outlets, including AFP, Al-Jazeera, Reuters and The Associated Press. Roman Karachinsky, CEO of the news aggregation app News360, also sees a future for wearables, but mainly for quick notifications they might not otherwise see. “We want to change the formula from one where you go and seek information out to a world where information finds you when it’s relevant and useful,” Karachinsky said. He said the newly introduced Android Wear platform for Google allows for News360 alerts to be sent to some smartwatches, and to Google Glass. These alerts fulfill a need of getting information out quickly -- whether it is a sports score, stock market action or breaking news -- in an unobtrusive way. “Instead of digging around your pocket for your smartphone, now you can just look at your wrist or glance up to your Google Glass,” said Karachinsky. “It’s a very transformative experience.” It remains unclear at the moment how fast wearable technologies will catch on, and how people will use the devices. While News Republic’s Raymond sees a demand for full articles, he differs from News360 on Google Glass. But he said smartwatches may gain more traction when they become independent of smartphones, allowing people to shed their phones for some of the time. Roger Kay, analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates, said news on smartwatches and Google Glass will probably be limited to short items that can be absorbed in a glance. “The glanceability of it is important,” Kay said. “I don’t imagine people squinting at their watches to read articles; they have enough trouble reading on their phones.”

Police confirms no ISIS presence in Bali
DENPASAR - The chief of the Denpasar police resort in Bali confirmed that no Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) activity had so far been found in the island’s capital city. “Until now, we have received no information about ISIS development in Denpasar,” Senior Commissioner Djoko Hariutomo stated. Hariutomo, however, stressed that he had ordered his men to be vigilant and keep monitoring the situation in the community. Hariutomo emphasized that he will communicate with religious and community leaders with regard to preventing people from being influenced and being part
of the movement, which is now being considered as a threat to world security by several countries including Indonesia. Hariutomo noted that the police will tighten security measures to ensure that the network will not spread in the region. “We will secure the public by not profiling certain people,” he remarked. Hariutomo expressed hoped that the people will promptly report any signs of ISIS activity
to the police. The ISIS issue has drawn mass attention in the country following the uploading of a video footage depicting an Indonesian ISIS fighter calling for Indonesian Muslims to join the movement on the social media site, “YouTube.” The government has called for blocking access to the video footage. TOKYO — A new generation of Japanese architects is scoring success by reinterpreting the past. Unlike their predecessors, who modernized Japan with Western-style edifices, they talk of fluidly defining space with screens, innovatively blending with nature, taking advantage of earthy materials and incorporating natural light, all trademarks of Japanese design. And their sensibility that speaks to a human-oriented yet innovative everyday life is proving a hit abroad, said Erez Golani Solomon, professor of architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo. “Food and architecture,” said Solomon, stressing how the two are Japan’s most potent brands. “They are powerful — Japan’s strongest cultural identity.” Kengo Kuma, one of the star architects, finds he is in demand not only in Japan and in the West but also in places such as China. Among the major China projects for Kuma are the recent Xinjin Zhi Museum, whose sloping angles and repeated tile motifs are characteristically Kuma, and the still ongoing Yunnan Sales Center, a sprawling complex of shops, housing and a theater, where a wooden lattice decorates the main structure overlooking a pond. He also designs private homes for affluent Chinese who admire Zen philosophy
and want to incorporate that stark aesthetic into their daily lives, he said. Japanese architecture offers warmth and kindness as it is adept in the use of natural light and artisanal craftsmanship, such as bamboo and paper. DENPASAR - The number of Russian holiday makers visiting Bali has declined lately on escalation of conflicts in Ukraine and Middle East, an observer said. Russian tourists to Bali generally used chartered aircraft as there is no regular flight between Russia and Indonesia, leading tourist observer Made Sudana said. Generally, Russian holiday makers visited Bali in the first months of year, Sudana said. Now almost every months from January to June the number of Russian visitors to Bali declined, he noted. Based on official record of the Bali Tourism Office, the number
of Russian visitors to Bali shrank 12 percent to 29,783 in the first half of the year from 45,216 in the same period in 2013. The number, however, is expected to rise in the remaining months of the year. Russians make up only around 2.3 percent of foreign tourists based on arrival record at the Bali’s airport of Ngurah Rai. In January-June period this year the number of foreign visitors to Bali totaled 1,727,875 people. Sudana said despite the decline in the number of visitors from Russia, the total number of foreign visitors to Bali rose 15.73 percent in the first half of the year from 1,493,020 in the same period last year. Australians are still dominant in
number with 446,406 visitors in the same period followed by visitors from China reaching 264,840 and Malaysians 109,298. Meanwhile, the central bureau of statistics office (BPS) said star rated hotels in Bali recorded a decline in the length of stay of tourists to 2.95 days on the average in June from 3.36 days in May this year. “Foreign tourists stayed only for 3.23 days per visit as against 3.50 days in May and domestic guests stayed for 2.41 days as against 3.08 days in May,” head of the Bali BPS office Panusunan Siregar said. Star rated hotels in Bali recorded an occupancy rate of 62.10 percent in June, up from 61.01 percent in May.

Bali International Summer School is an annual event held by Bali Foreign Affair Department under The Student Committee of Medical Faculty in Udayana University. The role of the department is to give information and communicate, also to coordinate in the area outside of Udayana University. The 2014 Bali International Summer School led by Kadek Dede Frisky Wiyanjana was held on August 7 through 13, 2014. The school presented the theme “Knowing The Prevention of Tropical Diseases for Traveller through Socio-Culture Approach”. The school consisted of academic and non academic activities such as lecture, workshop, talkshow, Student Project Presentation, Hospital Visit, Social Visit, water sport and cultural activities. The participants were taken to watch Kecak Dance, playing traditional Balinese games and visiting Kertalangu Village. The participants were coming from various countries such as Indonesia as the host, Germany, Netherlands, Tunisia, Sweden and Slovenia. The opening ceremony of Bali Summer School was held in Nikki Hotel Denpasar and closed by a farewell party in Pirates Bay, Nusa Dua.

People keep Buleleng Festival area clean SINGARAJA - Environmental sanitation got highlight during the Buleleng Festival (Bulfest) 2014 activity. Since the opening on August 6 to the closing on August 10, the Buleleng Sanitation and Landscape Agency with its ‘yellow troop’ team cleaned up the rubbish around the area of Bulfest activities. A total of 60 janitors were deployed and spread evenly along the Jalan Pahlawan, Jalan Veteran and Jalan Ngurah Rai. By using tricycle waste bins, janitors went around to sweep and pick up waste of the Bulfest visitors. The Head of Buleleng Sanitation and Landscape Agency, Nyoman Genep, said that during the Bulfest activity his party involved a total of 60 janitors to help maintain the sanitation of the festival area as long as it was thronged by visitors. To that end, the tasks were divided into 6 zones, where the ‘yellow troop’ worked in shifts from the morning till night. “Each zone is handled by several teams to maintain the sanitation. Nevertheless, we still hope visitors to dispose their waste in place,” he said, Friday (Aug 8). At least the Bulfest moment could educate people to maintain environmental sanitation as well as support the Buleleng program to be free from plastic waste in 2015. The equipment such as organic and inorganic waste bins had been prepared by Buleleng Sanitation and Landscape Agency, while broom stick, scoop, plastic trash bags, trash bins and mobile tricycle trash bin were still operated to support the sanitation. “Education on the waste care is very helpful so that people will be disciplined to dispose waste in place,” he said. On Klumpu hilltop there is a oneroof junior-senior high school. Principal of the local school, Ketut Suweta, said on Friday (Aug 7) that the school still lacked of building. Initially, on the barren land was just established a one-roof elementary-junior high school since the academic year 2004/2005. Then, it was resumed with the establishment of one-roof junior-senior high school in the academic year 2010/2012. In other words, during the period the region did not have a high school. However, due to high interest of local students to learn, a one-roof junior-senior high school was established. Unfortunately, the high interest in learning was not accompanied with the increase in the quality of infrastructure. Its junior high school remained to lack of three classes. Meanwhile, the high school had just owned a building with two classrooms. Besides, the high school required six classrooms. To overcome the problem, high school students should learn in the afternoon. Thus, in the morning the high school building was taken advantage by junior high school students. Currently, the student of junior high school amounted to 227 people.
Meanwhile, the high school student came to 189 people. So far, the high school had graduated one generation. The one-roof junior-senior high school had 12 teachers. Similarly, it also lacked of teachers so that many teachers should teach both at junior high and high school every day. Despite in very limited condition, the junior and senior high school could pass 100 percent in the final examination last year. Suweta admitted that similar condition was widely experienced by other regions with the same geographical conditions. So, he expected local government to be really aware of the educational condition in Nusa Penida. Education on the islands required more attention, so that it would not kindle gap between the condition of educational infrastructures in the region and mainland Klungkung. “Geographical conditions have resulted in difficulties. Now, let’s build together, do not even abandon,” said Suweta. In response to such condition, the Secondary Education Division Head of Klungkung Education Agency, Ketut Suadnyana, said that his agency planned a new building for one-roof junior-senior high school at Klumpu
this year. Even, its groundbreaking ceremony was undertaken on Thursday (Aug 7). The budget was taken from Klungkung regional budget worth IDR 1.017 billion. As planned, one of the new building units would be constructed for 120 days. So, it could be completed and operated next November. With the addition of the new building for six classrooms, his party expected that all classes of junior and senior high school of Klumpu could learn in the morning. Construction of the new building funded with Klungkung main budget 2014 was also intended for the construction of classroom at the one-roof senior high school on Lembongan Island. Its value reached IDR 1.3 billion and the project was expected to be completed by this November. He realized that many schools, especially in the hilly areas, lacked of building infrastructures. Nevertheless, his party confirmed the Education Agency would make improvement gradually. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NASHVILLE — Miley’s back, y’all. Miley Cyrus made her delayed-due-toillness return to the town where she grew up Thursday night, bringing a flying hot dog, a dwarf dressed as the Liberty Bell, a dozen recognizable hits, a taunt to the girls who beat her up in school and a lot of inappropriate touching. Drawing a crowd of mostly young women — and a hefty number of moms — the show was a little bit pop concert, a little bit late-night pay cable and a little bit great. In the audience: Two 20-something women with a gift for arts and crafts arrived at Cyrus’ homecoming concert with identical bedazzled shirts that read, “R.I.P. Hannah Montana.” Look no further than that for the official theme to Cyrus’ Bangerz Tour, a pastiche of weird culture that plays a lot like a YouTube channel devoted to absurdist performance art. The surprising thing, after the former teen television star raised such a lather last year with a highly memorable MTV Video Music Awards appearance, is how tame the show actually is. It’s true that Nashville is a pretty quiet town. And sure, Cyrus does simulate sex acts on stage during a few songs — Abe Lincoln has never seemed less presidential — and mentions drug use. But the woman whose twerking and foam finger started a national discussion balanced her naughty images and
saucier choreography with messages espousing personal freedom and a few moments of pop perfection. For the most part, the night — her fifth date since restarting a U.S. tour that was postponed for more than three months after an allergic reaction to antibiotics — was PG13, filled with images that are unavoidable on the Internet where much of Cyrus’ audience spends its time. The only thing pushing the show into truly R-rated territory was Cyrus’ spirited use of the F-word. The debate over Cyrus’ transformation from wholesome teen to a young woman exploring her sexuality hovered around the soldout show as mothers shepherded thousands of teenage girls into Bridgestone Arena, where the 21-year-old singer once attended shows as a teen herself. For some she was a guilty pleasure, and the presence of rolling papers, R-rated possibilities, booty shorts and inflat-
able bananas at the merch table only added to the feeling of things being taboo. Inside the arena, the crowd was all in as Cyrus gave something of a history lesson in over-the-top moments in pop music. For all the guff Cyrus has gotten, she’s not covering unfamiliar territory. Touching your special parts (Michael Jackson), well-endowed dancers expert in the butterfly (2 Live Crew), uncovered rear ends (David Lee Roth) are milestones passed decades ago. And to be clear, there were a lot of these things — a whole lot — during Cyrus’ 2 1/2-hour, 20-plus song set, along with flying kittens, inflatable dogs three stories tall, plushy dancers, giant tongues and even a simulated orgy. But there were also a lot of impressive moments where Cyrus showed her growing prowess as an entertainer. She pushed her voice to the edge at times while holding the attention of 16,000 people with just a microphone, and had moms and daughters singing every
word with the same gusto on major hits like “Wrecking Ball” and “Party in the USA.” Those were the moments that provided the real spectacle.
