‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Slings to Massive $117 Million Domestic Opening

LOS ANGELES - Spider-Man is officially a box office overachiever. As of Sunday morning, the latest cinematic depiction of the webbed-hero, “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” is looking at a $117 million opening from 4,348 locations. $10.6 million of the domestic total came from 392 Imax screens. That’s a huge win for Sony, Columbia Pictures, and Marvel Studios for the film, which cost roughly $175 million to produce. The anticipated opening weekend is higher than industry estimates, which were in the $90 million to $110 million range, while the studio cautiously pegged it at $80 million. “Everyone at Sony and Marvel are thrilled,” said Josh Greenstein, Sony’s marketing chief. “It’s safe to say it’s a triumphant return for Spider-Man.” “Homecoming” banked on the idea that the summer box office was craving a family-friendly superhero movie -- Tom Holland plays a high school version of Peter Parker who, at 15 years old, has to prove that he is worthy of being called an Avenger. And it seems that bet is paying off. The $117 million figure is the second largest in Sony Pictures history, behind “Spider-Man 3.” Much attention has been paid to the flick’s successful marketing campaign, which heavily featured Iron Man (Robert Downy Jr.), who serves as Spider-Man’s mentor in the film. Michael Keaton plays the big bad, Vulture, Jon Favreau plays Spidey’s guardian, Happy Hogan, and Zendaya stars as Michelle Jones (“MJ”), Parker’s brainy classmate. The movie consistently dominated social media in the weeks leading up to its release. Before “Homecoming,” Jon Watts directed two much lowerbudget feature films -- the 2014 horror movie “Clown” and 2015’s “Cop Car” starring Kevin Bacon. He also has a handful of writing and producing credits, and is one of six writers credited on the “Homecoming” script. Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal share production credit. While the former has proven essentially infallible in the biz, “Homecoming”

serves as a redemption narrative for the latter. After the infamous 2014 Sony hack, Pascal was ousted from her post at the top of the studio, and began to focus on producing. This is her second major release following last summer’s “Ghostbusters” reboot, but she also has a hand in a long list of upcoming projects including Sony’s “Barbie” movie, Steven Spielberg’s A-list-studded “The Papers,” and future “SpiderMan” movies. “We have incredible partners,” said Greenstein, who said that those relationships helped the film to be “embraced in a big way. It really shows the strength for this beloved character.” Despite the reliability of superhero movies at the box office, “Homecoming” could have been seen as a big bet for all parties involved. For one, it’s the third iteration of the character in the past 15 years -- before Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire donned the Spidey suit. The makers had to trust that audiences would be ready to see the character yet again. On top of that, the summer box office has not been particularly kind to the sequels and reboots that have become the industry’s summer signature. As audience fatigue has impacted previously reliable franchises like “Transformers” and even “Despicable Me,” the one thing that this summer has proved is that the domestic audience is not yet burnt out on superheroes. This is yet another Marvel movie release that has managed to capture

Starting with “Despicable Me 3,” which is headed for a $34 million second frame, or a 53% drop from last weekend. “Baby Driver” should sit comfortable in third, as positive word of a mouth is steering to a $12.8 million second weekend, or a 38% drop. “Wonder Woman” continues to hold on with $10.1 million in its sixth weekend, and

“Transformers: The Last Knight” should round out the top five with $6.3 million. Kumail Nanjiani’s “The Big Sick” is entering the top ten as it expands toward wide release, starting next Friday. From 326 North American theaters this weekend the movie should make $3.7 million. Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” should stay in the top ten as it, too, expands. This weekend it’s expected to make $2.1 million from 941 locations. Meanwhile, A24’s “A Ghost Story” starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck should spook $105,000 from four locations during its opening frame. Overall, the summer box office stands at about $2.3 billion, or 8% lower than last year. That leaves the

year overall about dead even with 2016 after movies like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Logan,” “Get Out” and “The Fate of the Furious” laid a strong foundation for the summer during the early part of the calendar year. “Despite the strength of ‘SpiderMan: Homecoming,’ yet another ‘down’ weekend puts us dead even with last year’s box office pace as we remain down 8% for the summer,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore. “The silver lining is the expected continued strength of Spidey, plus ‘War For The Planet of The Apes,’ ‘Dunkirk,’ and ‘Atomic Blonde’ all in rapid succession that could fuel a much-needed late summer renaissance at the multiplex.”(rtr)

Germans angry over ‘orgy of violence’ at Merkel’s pre-election G20

BERLIN - Germans expressed anger on Sunday over violence that hit a G20 world leaders’ summit in Hamburg, raising awkward questions for Chancellor Angela Merkel less than three months before an election. About 20,000 police struggled to contain several hundred anti-capitalist militants who torched cars, looted shops and hurled Molotov cocktails and stones during the July 7-8 summit. Tens of thousands more people demonstrated peacefully. Overall, 476 officers suffered injuries ranging from cuts and firework burns to eye damage from laser pointers. Police said on Sunday they had arrested 186 people and took 225 into custody. German newspapers devoted far more space to pictures of police firing water cannon onto hooded anarchists and other protestors than they did to Merkel’s diplomatic balancing act with fellow leaders of major world economies. “Embarrassment for Germany”

was Tagesspiegel’s description. “The pictures of helpless police who could not secure state order and protection of property are a political catastrophe,” columnist Gerd Nowakowski wrote in the paper. Top-selling Bild am Sonntag splashed pictures of masked anarchists and politicians on its front page with the headline “Criminals and Losers”. Inside, a political scientist described the scenes as an ‘orgy of violence’.

International media have focused more on U.S. President Donald Trump’s first meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin at the summit, as well as Trump’s diverging views on climate change and trade from those of the other leaders. Nevertheless, an Emnid poll showed that a majority of Germans, 59 percent, believed the riots damage the image of their country - even though violence has affected a number of international meetings around

the world over the years. Merkel was forced to defend her choice of Hamburg, saying other cities, like London, had hosted similar meetings. Hamburg, a seaport which is Germany’s second biggest city, has a strong radical leftist tradition. It was also home to an al Qaeda cell that carried out the 9/11 attacks on U.S. targets in 2001. Merkel had wanted to demonstrate to G20 partners, including Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, her commitment to freedom of speech and rejected the notion that some cities were out of bounds as summit venues. The strategy has backfired, said some commentators. “I can barely

breathe with anger because Chancellor Merkel and Hamburg mayor (Olaf) Scholz trivialise the brutal riots as ‘not acceptable’,” wrote a commentator in Bild am Sonntag. The Social Democrats (SPD), trailing Merkel’s conservatives by 12-15 percentage points in polls, squarely blamed Merkel. Police prepare article 359 of Criminal Code GIANYAR —A day after the death incident of a tourist from China, Wang Yumei, in Ayung River, in fact it did not dampen tourist visits to Toekad Rafting. China tests self-sustaining space station in Beijing

There are about 500 cars parked every day in the road border of Jalan Hanoman and around Jalan Monkey Forest.

BEIJING - Sealed behind the steel doors of two bunkers in a Beijing suburb, university students are trying to find out how it feels to live in a space station on another planet, recycling everything from plant cuttings to urine. They are part of a project aimed at creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides everything humans need to survive. Four students from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics entered the Lunar Palace-1 on Sunday with the aim of living self-sufficiently for 200 days. They say they are happy to act as human guinea-pigs if it means getting closer to their dream of becoming astronauts. “I’ll get so much out of this,” Liu Guanghui, a PhD student, who entered the bunker on Sunday, said. “It’s truly a different life experience.” President Xi Jinping wants China to become a global power in space exploration, with plans to send the first probe to the dark

side of the moon by 2018 and to put astronauts on the moon by 2036. The Lunar Palace 365 experiment may allow them to stay there for extended periods. For Liu Hong, a professor at Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the project’s principal architect, said everything needed for human survival had been carefully calculated. “We’ve designed it so the oxygen (produced by plants at the station) is exactly enough to satisfy the humans, the animals, and the organisms that break down the waste materials,” she said. But satisfying physical needs is only one part of the experiment, Liu said. Charting the mental impact of confinement in a small space for such a long time is equally crucial. “They can become a bit de-

pressed,” Liu said. “If you spend a long time in this type of environment it can create some psychological problems.” Liu Hui, a student leader who participated an initial 60-day experiment at Lunar Palace-1 that finished on Sunday, said that she sometimes “felt a bit low” after a day’s work. The project’s support team has found mapping out a specific set of daily tasks for the students is one way that helps them to remain happy. But the 200-day group will also be tested to see how they react to living a for period of time without sunlight. The project’s team declined to elaborate. “We did this experiment with animals... so we want to see how much impact it will have on people,” Liu, the professor, said. (rtr)

Driving under the influence in car powered by whisky biofuel LONDON - Alcohol and automobiles famously do not mix - but one Scottish scientist has disproved that maxim by driving a car powered by biofuel derived from making whisky. Edinburgh-based Celtic Renewables has developed a process to manufacture the biofuel biobutanol from draff and pot ale - barley kernels and a yeasty liquid that are produced when whisky is made and then usually thrown away. Martin Tangney, the president of Celtic Renewables and director of Edinburgh Napier University’s Biofuel Research Centre, said that a desire to effectively manage resources had inspired him to pursue the project. “What I did was I look at this as a business innovation as much as a technical innovation and thought: ‘if 70 percent of the cost of production is coming from the raw materials – why not tackle that end of it?’” he told Reuters by telephone on Friday. Tangney showed the new fuel’s efficiency by driving a rental car filled with the mixture around the university’s car park this week. Tangney said that Celtic would

Police arrest effigy thief at eight temples

AMLAPURA — Theft of pratima or sanctified effigy is rampant again in Karangasem. After the incident at Dalem Temple of Nongan early this year and several other temples in Karangasem, this time similar incident occurred again at Bukit village, Karangasem, last Saturday (Jul. 8). However, this time police could immediately reveal the identity of the thief and arrested him at his home, not far from the location of the effigy theft. The act of perpetrator is quite disturbing because he has broken in eight temples at the village. Chief of Karangasem Police, Gede Ardana, said on Sunday (Jul. 9) the perpetrator is I Wayan Juli Anggara Tama alias Pentong, 21. The Hindu perpetrator from Bukit Kaler hamlet, Bukit, was originally known to have stolen effigies in several crime scenes, such as Mas Manik Temple at Kebon Bukit hamlet and Alit Pasek clan temple at Bukit Kaler hamlet. However, after developed, there were a total of eight temples broken in by Pentong. Other than both temples, six other temples are the Dadia Kelod clan temple at Bukit Kelod Temple, Dalem Temple of Bukit customary village, Mas Bingin Sari Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet, Manuaba Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet, Pasek clan temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet and Bale Agung Temple at Bukit Kelod. Before arresting the perpetrator, police through operations unit received a report from local residents that there had been an effigy burglary from a storage box at Mas Bingin Sari Temple at Bukit Kelod hamlet around 16:30. After that, the operations unit headed by chief unit 1 and identification team of the criminal investigation carried out crime scene examination and identified missing items. In addition, police already interrogated some witnesses. Furthermore, after getting some clues, police carried out more intensive investigations and obtained data that some other temples at Bukit village also suffered losses in the form of effigies. Armed with testimonies from witnesses, the team got information that there is a resident used to behave negatively. Police immediately suspected the person and conducted a search for the person. Around 21:00, police managed to find the suspect Wjat. When interrogating the perpetrator, he initially gave crinkled information. However, he could no longer dodge after all the testimonies of witnesses and evidences entirely pointed to him. Finally, he confessed his deeds that have stolen effigies at a number of temples at Bukit village. “From the hands of the perpetrator, we secure some evidences. Now, we are still developing the case whether similar cases also occurred in other regions,” he said. From the perpetrator’s hands, police secured some evidences, such as a triangular black gemstone, five pieces of perforated coins, ten old coins, and a tin of Sampoerna cigarette, a black purse and a box. NEGARA — Dozens of residents of Anyar hamlet, West Tegalbadeng, Negara, protested the existence of chicken coops having the impact on fly invasion. The three adjacent chicken coops located close to one another are not far from people’s settlement and have been operating for years. Lately, the fly invasion adequately disturbs the residents up to a radius of one kilometer from the chicken coops. Residents have also sent their objection to the local village authority last April and the owner has made a statement. However, within the past week the fly emerged again. According to residents, peak of the fly invasion occurred on Wednesday (Jul. 5) and on the piodalan or temple festival at subgroup meeting hall. At that time, residents gathered and found the fly invasion. Moreover, the residents living in a distance of one kilometer also feel the impact. Cardinal Pell arrives in Australia to face sexual offence charges

SYDNEY - A top Vatican official charged in his native Australia with historical sex crimes arrived in Sydney on Monday ahead of his first court appearance later this month. BUSINESS China’s June factory price inflation subdued on modest raw materials recovery

BEIJING - China’s producer price inflation was unchanged in June and remained well off highs seen earlier this year, amid lingering oversupply issues in the steel sector and as signs of economic weakness weighed on the outlook for prices. The producer price index (PPI) rose 5.5 percent in June from a year earlier, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Monday. This was in line with analyst forecasts and unchanged from the previous month. Prices of raw materials are making a modest recovery, helped by stronger futures prices in China over the past few weeks, after an earlier hit taken from a broader cooling in economic activity since March. China’s June consumer prices rose 1.5 percent from a year earlier, in line with market expectations and May’s reading, the NBS said, with food prices continuing their declines albeit at a slower pace. There are some concerns among analysts that price pressures could weaken throughout the rest of the year as economic fundamentals soften. “The upshot is that, having eased in previous months, price pressures appear to have stabilised in June,” Julian Evans-Pritchard from Capital Economics in Singapore wrote in a note. “Nonetheless, with slowing credit growth likely to weigh on economic activity in coming quarters we think that, volatility in food prices aside, inflation still has further to fall. This will disappoint those hoping for a sustained period of reflation that could help to erode corporate debt burdens.”

Food prices, the biggest component of the consumer price index, fell at a slower 1.2 percent from the previous year, after sliding 1.6 percent in May and 3.5 percent in April. “Falling food prices can be attributed to a high build-up of food reserves and seasonal factors,” Zhu Baoliang, chief economist at the State Information Center (SIC), said, according to a story published on Monday in China’s Financial News newspaper, affiliated with the People’s Bank of China (PBOC). Unique, Magoak-goakan Tradition in Kintamani

Kintamani customary village held magoak-goakan tradition on Thursday (Mar. 23). The tradition was attended by approximately 4,000 people ranging from children, adolescents, adults to the elderly. The tradition was organized in a series of Nyepi Desa at the local customary village. From the morning, thousands of people putting on middle traditional attires have thronged the village square or sacred land to implement magoakgoakan tradition.

Not infrequently, the participants should turn upside down due to the sloping arena. In addition, a number of participants, especially women, were crushed by the other participants. Nevertheless, it did not reduce the enthusiasm of residents to follow the tradition. Amid the activities, chief of Kintamani customary village, Nyoman Sukadia, said that magoak-goakan tradition has been started at 8:00 until midnight. This activity is routinely held every year considering this tradition is the legacy of ancestors that must continue to be preserved. “The magoak-goakan tradition has something to do with religious ceremonies of Nyepi Desa of Kintamani village. This event has been organized since the full moon of Balinese ninth month (Mar. 12)

and the ceremony ended at 00:00 on Wednesday,” he said. Sukadia explained that the magoak-goakan tradition aims to more establish relationship among the residents of Kintamani customary village. Moreover, this tradition is intended for preservation of the natural environment and wildlife. His technique was considered unorthodox, albeit in a brilliant way. Le Mayeur utilized thick and rather stiff brushes to create sharp yet fluent caresses, which were later elaborated on by Antonio Blanco, another influential painter in Bali. Le Mayeur passed away on May 31, 1958. The loving couple left no children but the well-crafted mansion that is the museum today, and its legacy was bequeathed to the Indonesian government. The museum exemplifies the priceless heritage of an artist and a nation.

The main building features the former living quarters of the couple, with classical Balinese elements, sculpted stone walls and red terrazzo floor tiles. Carved wood dominates the furnishings, and window sills feature motifs inspired by wayang shadow puppet characters. There are five rooms that serve as silent witnesses to the lives of Le Mayeur and Ni Pollok. Visitors may imagine the similar love story brought again to life through inanimate objects, similar to the retro-styled storytelling of the film Titanic. Walkthroughs include the artist’s studio, reading room and study, and the bedroom as well as Ni Pollok’s vanity corner and bathroom.

SPIELBERG - Formula One rivals Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo saw Valtteri Bottas take off like a rocket at the start of Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix and concluded the Mercedes driver had either jumped the lights, got lucky or was not human. Both immediately went on the radio to ask their teams, Ferrari and Red Bull respectively, whether the Finn had gone too soon. “But when I said I don’t believe, it’s because I don’t believe. “I think normally the reaction times (to the lights) are around 0.2 for everyone.
