No monkey business in ‘Planet of the Apes’

Digital characters have by now long populated our movies like unwanted house guests. Some of these CGI inventions, like Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings,” have been pleasant, even precious company. But most have disrupted our movie worlds — and not just as monsters tearing our cities apart, but as awkward distractions to our cinematic realities. The name Jar Jar Binks will forever be followed by solemn head shaking. Never forget. his human corollary, Gary Oldman — urge their species toward battle. To a surprising degree, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” belongs to the monkeys. In the uncommonly sure-handed fusion of computer-generated and live-action images, apes are the more fully realized, expressive characters. Given that the apes communicate in sign language and spurts of English, this may be the biggest summer movie with so many subtitles. Whereas Pierre Boulle’s original “Planet of the Apes” was satirical, Reeves and screenwriters Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Mark Bomback have given this “Apes” the grandly gloomy “Dark Knight” treatment, complete with an exceptional score by Michael Giacchino. The movie feeds off a sense that, given the state of the planet, a reordering of the animal kingdom may be due. There’s a pervasive jealousy to the primates in “Apes”: their comfort in nature and simplicity of life. Audiences, in fact, will cheer the animals over the humans. And few will miss the gun control argument shallowly buried throughout the film. What would Charlton Heston have made of that? But there’s also a question of putting too much gravity on an essentially absurd story. Eventually we have screaming monkeys on horseback firing automatic weapons amid roaring flames. One is tempted to lean forward and whisper,

NEW YORK — What does it take to get country legends like Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard on the same album? A 19-year-old newcomer named Mary Sarah. Sarah’s debut album, “Bridges,” features duets with their original performers including Parton and Nelson on their well-known country songs. It also includes one of Ray Price’s final recordings before he died last year. She was able to pull off the dream list of collaborators after meeting country singer-songwriter Freddy Powers, a close friend of Nelson and Haggard. Sarah, a Texas native, had performed throughout the Texas Opry circuit for years, mostly in Galveston and around Houston. But in “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” the tables have turned, and not just because apes now rule a world where all but 1 in 500 humans have been wiped out by a so-called simian flu virus. No, the biggest uprising in the sequel to 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is by those digitally created, nonhuman characters which have finally and resoundingly come of age. Hail Caesar. That’s the ape played by Andy Serkis, the motion-capture maestro of creatures like Gollum and a much bigger ape, Kong. Serkis played Caesar in “Rise of the Planet Apes,” the surprisingly good origin story of the rebooted “Apes” franchise wherein chimps, injected with a serum meant to cure human brain damage, develop great intelligence. Caesar was a fine character then, but in “Dawn,” he shifts to center stage. It’s 10 years after the last film ended and Caesar is now a weary leader and firmlyrooted family man with a wife, a teenage son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and a new baby. Who gets credit for Caesar’s deep, troubled eyes, Serkis or the effects by Joe Letteri and Dan Lemmon? Does it matter? Looking for a dam to restore power for a colony of human survivors, a group (Jason Clarke, Keri Russell) stumbles upon the monkeys’ Muir Woods home in the Redwoods outside San Francisco. The encounter sets off panic on both sides, as the firebrands in each community — the ape Koba, played by Toby Kebbell, and

JAKARTA - Indonesian stocks rallied to a one-year high Thursday after most unofficial tallies showed Jakarta governor Joko Widodo ahead of ex-general Prabowo Subianto in a closely fought race to lead Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. Both candidates declared victory Wednesday in the tightest and most divisive presidential election since the downfall of dictator Suharto in 1998. However the polling agencies considered most reliable indicated a Widodo win, and the Jakarta benchmark index surged more than 2.5 percent at the open. Investors have been hoping for victory for the Jakarta governor, the first serious presidential contender without deep roots in the Suharto era, seeing him as a potential reformer and clean leader in a graft-ridden country. Stocks eased slightly in early afternoon trade but remained

more than 1.8 percent up and at their highest level since May last year. The rupiah, which has retreated in recent weeks as Prabowo gained ground against Widodo, was up 0.6 percent at 11,565 to the dollar. Official results are not expected until July 22. “Joko Widodo looks to have won (the) presidential election in Indonesia, and hopes are high that he will make a fresh start on economic reform,” said Gareth Leather from Capital Economics. Widodo is seen as more likely than Prabowo to embark on much-needed reforms to inject new life into the economy, and as being more welcoming to foreign companies operating in

Jokowi temporarily wins 70 percent in Bali

Although the Electoral Commission (KPU) has not officially announced the results, the Jokowi-JK Campaign Team of Bali Province has released the results of internal calculation or real count for Bali Province. Team Leader of the JokowiJK Campaign for Bali Province, Wayan Koster, in a press conference in the office of the PDI-P Bali, claimed on Wednesday (Jul 9) that Jokowi-JK camp won the majority of the votes in all counties / municipality in Bali with the votes exceeded the target of 70 percent. “Gratefully, based on the result of real count, for the time being Jokowi-JK absolutely won in Bali with 70.99 percent or 685,411 votes of the totally 965,531 valid votes,” said Koster accompanied by Secretary of the Jokowi-JK Campaign Team for Bali Province Ida Bagus Oka Gunastawa with the ranks of the team and supporting volunteer of Jokowi-JK. However, Koster added that such figure might still change until all the valid votes came to tabulation. “But, we estimate the amount of vote will hold on. It’s remarkable because in fact this achievement exceeds our target at least 70 percent of the vote in Bali,” said Koster while adding that nearly 71 percent of victory gained by Jokowi-JK in Bali Province posed the accumulation of victory throughout the county/ municipality. “It’s very encouraging because we got the majority of victory in Bali, including in Karangasem and Klungkung County that was considered pretty hard at our initial prediction,” said the PDI-P politician from Buleleng.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - China dominates 72.05 percent of the Bali’s import market or reaches USD 111,328,781 of the total value of Bali’s import during the period of January-May 2014 reaching USD 154,523,111. The presence of a variety of products from China beats out South Korea, United States, Hong Kong and Australia. The Head of Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Panusunan Siregar, said the development of import value of the five countries indicated if the United States and Hong Kong showed a decrease by 10.90 percent and 74.85 percent. “Meanwhile, three other countries, namely China, South Korea and Australia showed an increase with the respective percentage of 405.64 percent, 597.27 percent and 25.31 percent,” said Panusunan Siregar. According to him, the main commodities imported by Bali included machinery products, jewelry, electrical equipment, essential oils, cosmetics and watches. “Most imported products are mechanical equipment such as tractors and heavy equipment. It is in accordance with our needs in Bali,” he said. He said the import of production equipment was considered much better than bringing in food or beverages to meet consumer needs. The effort to maintain the region as green belt falls in line with the appearance of semi-permanent buildings in the area. As a result, the nurseries previously standing in a row in the region have disappeared with the presence of semi-permanent buildings. SARAJEVO — Hundreds of people turned out in Sarajevo’s main street on Wednesday to pay respect to 175 victims of the Srebrenica massacre — Europe’s worst since World War II — as a truck carried their coffins to a final resting place. The remains of the men and boys, found in mass graves and identified through DNA analysis, will be buried in Srebrenica on Friday, the 19th anniversary of the massacre, next to 6,066 previously found victims. As the coffins passed by, shielded by a canvas cloth, some tucked flowers in or caressed the canvas. Others silently prayed as the truck stopped briefly in front of Bosnia’s presidency. was a United Nations-protected area that was besieged by Serb forces throughout the 1992-95 war for Serb domination in Bosnia. But U.N. troops offered no resistance when the Serbs overran the majority Muslim town on July 11, 1995, rounding up Srebrenica’s Muslims and killing over 8,000 men and boys. An international court later labeled the killings as genocide. Workers are still excavating the victims’ bodies from hidden mass graves, and their job is made harder because those responsible often retrieved the bodies and relocated them elsewhere to hide the crimes. Many of the remains were torn apart or mixed up by bulldozers, and experts have had to use DNA analysis to put a body together from bones found in locations miles from each other.

SEOUL — South Korea’s central bank said economic growth will be slower than expected this year because consumer spending has waned following a deadly ferry sinking. Lee Ju-yeol, governor at the Bank of Korea, said Thursday that South Korea’s economy will expand 3.8 percent this year instead of 4.0 percent predicted in April. He said outlook for next year was also downgraded. Asia’s fourthlargest economy will likely grow 4.0 percent, not 4.2 percent, in 2015. The revision was due to a decline in consumer spending after the April 16 ferry disaster that profoundly shocked South Koreans. The tragedy killed 293 people and left 11 missing. Most of the dead were teenagers on a school trip. Sales of clothes, food and fuel dropped in April. Tourism, restaurant and leisure industries took most of the brunt of the tragedy because schools canceled trips and South

Koreans refrained from drinking and other festive activities. In May, the drop narrowed but spending still remained sluggish. Inflationary pressure was also weakened, giving policymakers room to support the economy. Consumer prices will increase 1.9 percent this year, lower than the previously forecast 2.0 percent increase, the bank said. Also Thursday, Bank of Korea left its policy rate unchanged at 2.5 percent for a 14th month. However, the decision was not unanimous, with one policymaking dissenting.

Lee said South Korea’s economy faced a higher chance of slowing. Even then, policymakers kept the rate steady because the recovery was intact, albeit a bit slower than before, he said. VATICAN CITY - The Vatican on Wednesday said it would separate its bank’s investment business from its Church payments work to try to clean up after years of scandal, and vowed to become a “model of financial transparency”. French businessman Jean-Baptiste de Franssu was named as the new head of the bank, officially known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), succeeding German lawyer Ernst Von Freyberg, who has run the bank since February 2013. Freyberg, who has said he is leaving for personal reasons, has introduced reforms to make the IOR more transparent and compliant with international norms against money laundering, and has closed many suspicious accounts. The Vatican also plans to increase scrutiny on one of the two sections of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See, or APSA - also hit by recent scandals - that runs Vatican properties, handles income and spending, prepares budgets and acts as a central accounting department and purchasing office. Australian Cardinal George Pell, head of the Vatican’s recently formed Secretariat for the Economy, told a news conference that the move was necessary in order for his department to “exercise its responsibilities of economic control and vigilance” over all Vatican departments. To underscore the importance the pope attaches to cleaning up the Vatican, he issued an official Latin decree called a “Motu Proprio” modifying a Vatican constitution to shift the responsibility for the APSA department to the Secretariat. The decree said all had to obey his order “regardless of anything to the contrary”. A new central Vatican Asset Management department will handle investments, leaving the bank to concentrate on its original aim and focus on payment services for religious orders, Vatican employees and charities, he said, changes that will be phased in over three years. Pell said he wanted the entire Vatican to become “a model of financial transparency instead of cause for occasional scandal” and that all the changes had been approved by Pope Francis, noting that the cardinals who elected the pope in 2013 had given him a mandate to make the Vatican transparent and scandal-free. “We are aiming at substantial transparency. There will be audits and these reports will be audited externally,” Pell said, noting that the IOR “is in a peaceful transition” and Freyberg had “cleared the decks” for a new phase in the bank’s history. In June 2013, Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, who worked for 22 years as a senior accountant at APSA, was arrested and is on trial on charges of using his position in a plot to smuggle millions of dollars into Italy from Switzerland for his rich friends in order to avoid Italian taxes. Scarano, who has told Italian magistrates of numerous irregularities at APSA, such as allowing outsiders to have accounts there, is also the subject of a separate trial on money laundering charges connected to the Vatican bank. Pell said the Vatican would appoint an “independent auditor general who will be able to go anywhere and everywhere” in the Vatican to guarantee transparency and legality. Many voters using form A5 and identity card unable to vote Bali Post

DENPASAR - Various administrative and logistic issues still occurred related to voting in the presidential election, Wednesday (Jul 9). Based on facts in the field, it was found that a number of voters using A5 or removal letter to vote and identity card could not vote. It happened because the polling stations they visited had run out of ballots. Such condition happened at a number of polling stations in Denpasar and Badung County. For example, at polling station (TPS) 14 and 15 of Sanglah hamlet, Dauh Puri village, the voting organizer committee (KPPS) was confused and overwhelmed with the presence of many voters using identity

cards. Similarly, many other voters wanted to vote by using form A5 especially the doctors and employees of Sanglah Hospital. Unluckily, those voters could not cast because the ballot had run out. They were encouraged to vote at the polling station nearby, but they did not accept. Similar experience was told by a reporter from NTT. Despite carrying the form A5, he still could not vote because the polling station he visited had run out of ballots. At polling station 4 Kutuh, South Kuta, a total of 10 people who wanted to cast were rejected because they did not carry form A5. Something similar also happened in Denpasar namely at polling station 56 and 78 Panjer.

Many voters wanted to use identity card to vote. Unfortunately, most of them were rejected because the ballot had been exhausted, too. Chairman of the Bali Electoral Commission (KPU), Dewa Kade Wiarsa Raka Sandhi, said there were a number of problems during the voting in some polling stations. Admittedly, a lot of voters who used identity card and form A5 did not get the opportunity to vote due running out of ballots. Thousands of Israeli troops massed near the Gaza border, the possibility of a ground invasion grew larger — along with the risk of heavier casualties on both sides. “Despite the fact it will be hard, complicated and costly, we will have to take over Gaza temporarily, for a few weeks, to cut off the strengthening of this terror army,” Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s intelligence minister, told Israel Radio. “If you ask my humble opinion, a significant operation like this is approaching.” The government has authorized the army to activate up to 40,000 reservists and Israeli TV stations said about a quarter of those forces had been called up, signaling a decision on a ground invasion could still be days away. A ground offensive in Gaza would be a risky gamble for Israel. It could lead to heavy civilian casualties on the Palestinian side and trigger strong international criticism, as was the

case during one that killed hundreds of Palestinians in 2009. SPRING, Texas — A father opened fire at a suburban Houston home, killing four of his children as well as two adults who were with them and critically wounding his 15-year-old daughter, authorities said. The teenager was able to call police Wednesday and later warned that her father planned to go to her grandparents’ home to kill them, said Deputy Thomas Gilliland of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. The suspected gunman eventually surrendered after a three-hour standoff with deputies who had cornered him in a nearby street. Gilliand said there were “two hours of constant talking with a man armed with a pistol to his head and who had just killed six people.” The sheriff’s department said precinct deputy constables were called to the house Wednesday evening and found two adults and three children dead. Another child later died at a hospital. Killed were two boys, ages 4 and 14; two girls, ages 7 and 9; a 39-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, Gilliland said. The gunman and his wife are estranged, and she was out of state, Gilliland said. All of the children were theirs. It is an act that has caused a lot of innocent casualties in Palestine, and it has created a new obstacle in the efforts to create a condition conducive for the continuation of peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine,” stated Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa. The minister noted that Israel’s recent military action had aggravated the distress of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank. Marty described the military action as a “collective punishment” conducted by Israel on the people of Palestine. “It must be understood that the core problem here is Israel occupying Palestine’s area. This must end. We must push through the peace negotiation process between Israel and Palestine in order for them to agree on a two-state solution,” Marty remarked. “Regarding Israel’s recent attack, the UN’s Security Council and the international community must push Israel to stop conducting violence on the civilians in Gaza. Dani Pedrosa will race with the Honda MotoGP team at least until the end of the 2016 season after extending his current deal. The Spaniard’s future had been the subject of speculation amid team-mate Marc Marquez’s incredible form, as the reigning champion won the first eight races of the year while Pedrosa was left tied with Valentino Rossi for a distant second in the standings. Honda had announced a new contract with Marquez in May, but there had been no news about Pedrosa’s new deal. On Wednesday, however, the speculation came to an end, with the Japanese team announcing a new two-year deal for Pedrosa. That means works Honda line-up will remain unchanged at least until the end of 2016. “I’m very happy to be able to announce my renewal with the Honda team, and grateful to Honda for the trust they have shown in me for for a further two years,” said Pedrosa, who has spent his entire world championship career with Honda, starting from 125cc in 2001. “It’s the best way for me to continue in my racing career, together with the company I was with in my very first race. The Netherlands forwards, and the rest of the team, essentially ran out of steam Wednesday in the World Cup semifinals, losing to Argentina in a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw. How different to a month ago and the start of the tournament, when the teammates scored two goals each and the Dutch soared to a glorious 5-1 win over defending champion Spain. It was all downhill from there for the three-time World Cup runnersup. The Dutch never again reached the heights of that win over the world champions in Salvador, trailing Australia at one point, and then needing a last-gasp comeback against Mexico and their own shootout win over underdog Costa Rica to make the last four. On Wednesday in a grinding battle against Argentina in Sao Paulo, the Dutch were on their last legs. Their fate appeared to be especially tied to the two front men, who both failed to score in open play in the knockout stages. And on Wednesday, the Argentine defense kept them covered yet again. The Netherlands’ World Cup hopes faded through the last three games and finally ended with a 4-2 shootout loss to the Argentines at Itaquerao Stadium. “You can’t blame anybody, also not the boys who missed penalties,” said Robben, who did score in the shootout. “You win together and you lose together.” As a team, the Dutch all appeared weary. Defender Bruno Martins Indi was substituted at halftime because he was struggling with the pace of Enzo Perez, and midfielder Nigel de Jong, only recently back from injury, had to come off after an hour. Van Persie, the Netherlands captain, didn’t even make the shootout.
