Bali News Shrine collapsed, landslide blocked road Amlapura (Bali Post)-

After three days of heavy rain since Saturday (6/7), a number of local houses, shrines collapsed and caught by landslides. Meanwhile a number of roads in Selat, Sidemen and Rendang got covered by landslides. Karangasem Regional Disaster Management Board Secretary, Ketut Prama Budata, ST, last Tuesday (9/7) explained that landslides have been happening a lot yet it is still unknown how many damages were caused. “We still focus in opening the roads from landslides remains so traffic can go smoothly again. We just completed the one in Iseh which started in the morning and by 2 pm traffic route managed to be normal again. Hopefully there will be no more landslides as there has been no reports again,” Budata stated. The landslide in Iseh reached as far

as 20 meters and height 7 meters. Wayan Eka from Selat stated the rain almost did not stop the past three days. There hasn’t been any casualties or wounded reported so far. In Pesangkan, on a street in between hills and gorge, a house got its house dragged along with its shrine covered by landslides. The owner was asked to evacuate in the moment as the gorge condition is dangerous. Meanwhile in Banjar Tengah Amerta Buana Village, Selat, it was reported that the building and srhines owned by Ketut Kancrung (75) was destroyed due to landslides. In Bunteh, Sukawana, a kitchen owned by Wayan Dateng was destroyed by landslides while Ni Luh Darmiati also had the same incident with her bathroom. Beach sand theft on the coastal areas of Yehembang is increasingly prevalent lately. Such an action proliferates again because of the lack of decisive action from relevant authorities. The authorities seem to blindfold though having taken action repeatedly, yet such an action remains to emerge. A number of local people knowing about the matter cannot do much because it will directly have a social impact. Some residents caring for the environment admit to feel increasingly apprehensive because the impact is getting significant. The most severe abrasion occurs along Yehembang Beach. Even, the coastal levee established with the budget reaching billions of rupiahs starts to be porous and even collapses along some 10 meters. A number of perpetrators, according to residents, were uncomfortable to be accused of being the trigger of such abrasion. Even, they dared to openly excavate although having problem with local people. The perpetrators also assessed there was no abrasion or

broken safeguarding levee. Some residents getting the information on Tuesday (Jul 9) claimed to be frustrated with such an action because the perpetrator stayed to quarry the beach sand freely at Yehembang. Actually, the rules had clearly forbidden the beach sand excavation especially for commercial purposes. From information of local people, the excavation continued to be performed every night. Pickup and trucks usually came down and dug on the beach at night. One of the residents, Wayan Jana, deplored the lack of measures to stop the harmful action to the environment. Without decisive action from the authority, the perpetrators would dig the

beach sand freely. Even, according to the resident, the perpetrator was getting arrogant and considered to have been protected by a strong patron. Their action was never touched. If there was a disciplining operation, the information would leak so that it stopped the action before the officers arrived. “Residents are actually very frustrated. Thus, we do hope the authorities can take action against the perpetrator consistently,” he explained. On the other hand, the headman of Yehembang, I Made Semadi, said that his party would summon the alleged perpetrator to be given a coaching because it had something to do with the security aspect of his region. Kidney failure case in Bali indicates an increase. It is discernible from the dialysis service at Sanglah Hospital continuing to get additional new patients. According to a consultant physician from Bali Med Hospital, Wayan Sudhana, kidney failure was a condition where the kidneys failed to run

its function. Patients with kidney failure would require dialysis service if their kidney’s function only reached 15 percent. Such condition meant the kidneys were unable to filter the toxins produced by the body and they remained in the blood. If the blood was dirty and not purified, the patient would experience shortness and complications in some organs such as the brain, heart, kidneys and even the heart itself and could cause the patient to die. “Dialysis functions to purify the toxins that cannot be purified by kidneys,” said Sudhana. Another measure that could be taken for patients with kidney failure aside from dialysis was kidney transplant. In Bali, the kidney transplant could not be performed so that patients with kidney failure should undergo dialysis for the rest of their life. “Duration of the dialysis that should be taken by patients highly depends on their endurance,” said Sudhana. Kidney failure disease was more likely to happen to people suffering from hypertension, diabetes mellitus, bladder stones and urinary tract infection. Increasing cases of these diseases in the community had an impact on the increasing cases of kidney failure. Increase in the disease like hypertension and diabetes was caused by unhealthy lifestyles. Management of Kertalangu cultural village questioned Bali Post

DENPASAR - Nature tourist attraction at Kertalangu Cultural village having been opened since 2007 begins to reap a complaint. Particularly it related to the commitment of cooperation with local farmers becoming the landowners of the jogging track. Currently, the management of Kertalangu Cultural Village seems to ignore the landowners in the region so that it kindled charges to users of the jogging track. Information obtained in the field on Tuesday (Jul 9) mentioned the jogging track users in the region had to pay in order to be able to walk on the path. The charge was imposed because the jogging track occurred on private land. In addition, the shared contract agreement of the land by the management of Kertalangu Cultural Village was no longer extended. Amount of the charge varied widely. Some visitors claimed to have been charged at IDR 2,000 by an individual at the area. “We have been asked for IDR 200,000 when we were having promenade with family,” said one of the jogging track users. Director of the Kertalangu Cultural Village was not in the office when asked for confirmation about the complaint. According to the HRD Assistant of the Kertalangu Cultural Village, AA Mas Muliati, her boss was having a religious ceremony at his residence. Related to the complaint, Mas Muliati did not dare to give comment. “We will convey this to the leadership,” she said. Meanwhile, the former headman of Kesiman Kertalangu, I Wayan Warka, admitted to have heard about the problem in the area. Even, his party had made coordination with village apparatus to resolve the problem at Kertalangu cultural village. “We’ve heard about this problem and will promptly send a letter to the management,” he said. Warka serving as a legislator in the Denpasar House said the problem would be immediately resolved and found out the best solution. His party did not want the problem in the region to drag on because it would have an impact on the visitors and local village. On that account, a meeting would be soon organized in the near future with farmers owning the land. At least, there were seven farmers whose land was utilized for the jogging track. The dispute had also been revealed by a legislator of the Denpasar House, I Kadek Ari Sucita. In a meeting with a number of regional working units (SKPD) in Denpasar Municipality, Ari Sucita had questioned about its contribution to the Denpasar Municipality. Indeed, this tourism supporting sector is estimated to persistently decline. As predicted, the poor management, lack of interest among the young generation to do farming and diverse challenges faced such as the high conversion of land function will cause the rice production in Bali harvested in August to experience a decline. Even, the decline will even continue in the next period namely the sub-round III (September-December) where the rice production will still decline by 2.14 percent compared to the same period in 2012. “In the sub-round II (MayAugust), the rice production will probably decrease by 1.25 percent and similar condition continues to sub-round III,” said the Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali, Gde Suarsa. Further, he said the rice production forecast in sub-round II and III of 2013 purely sourced from the existing series and models. According to him, there had been no correction due to the other factors such as weather condition, natural disaster, pest, farmer ’s behavior or government program. “If Bali government does not make any breakthroughs, the rice production in 2013 will decrease by 2,927 tons of dry unhusked rice (down 0.34 percent),” he explained.

Nevertheless, Gde Suarsa added that such condition was different from sub-round I (January-April) 2013 where the rice production was recorded to increase by 2.49 percent (up 7,126 tons of dry unhusked rice) when compared to the same sub-round in 2012. “Such increase happened due to an increase in planting in January coming to 2,059 hectares. The planting area in January 2012 totally reached 19,669 hectares, while the planting area in January 2013 reached 21,728 hectares. In other words, there was an increase in the planting in January reaching 2,059 hectares (up 10.47 percent) of paddy plants resulting in an increase in the rice harvested area of 1,059 hectares (up 2.14 percent)

in the sub-round I of 2013,” he explained. Seeing the condition, the agricultural expert, Prof. Wayan Windia, argued despite the agricultural sector, including the subak, had got the attention from local government, the condition stayed to be considered less maximal. The existing assistance turned less focused and was likely to threaten the supply of basic needs. “The decline in the rice production occurred due to a continued decline in the irrigation systems in the downstream sector. The Balinese traditional irrigation system known as subak remains to face destruction in the downstream sector so that the production of rice fields continues to decline,” he said. (kmb28)

We’re open to the development of Benoa Bay made by any parties authorized by the government, provided that it can give added values and the safety of our environment, especially Tanjung Benoa, is guaranteed. I think our society and we as the society will agree,” said the Tanjung Benoa customary village chief. The consideration was based on the economic and infrastructural needs of the community. With the area development, he hoped the empowerment of local communities would increase. Although being open to investment, Wana Putra gave a number of requirements. The development of Benoa Bay, he said, should be based on in-depth study, especially regarding the environmental protection and public safety. Besides, the development should be based on the Tri Hita Karana (spiritual, social and environmental harmony) concept. Before the requirements could be complied, his party could not decide anything. “We want a guarantee that the new island will not cause Tanjung Benoa to be eroded,” he said. The statement is quite interesting. In fact, the investment opportunity at the Benoa Bay was positively responded by residents. Moreover, there was a lure of the investors to customary village amidst the issue. When asked about this matter, Wana Putra immediately denied it. According to him, no lures were promised to him regarding the reclamation plan at Benoa Bay. On the other hand, the information regarding the issuance of the Decree of the Governor of Bali, Mangku Pastika, about the Permit on the Utilization, Development and Management of Benoa Bay Waters provoked strong reaction from the legislator of Badung House, I Nyoman Giri Prasta. He asserted the permit issuance indicated the lack of transparency of Bali government especially the governor in making the policy. He also accused there was a hidden motive behind the lack of openness of Bali government related to the development plan at Benoa Bay. “Provincial government, chiefly

the governor, should be open. Do not cover up any issues related to the fate of Bali. Moreover, the development of Benoa Bay has a very broad impact on the environment and society of Bali and Badung County in particular,” he said, when met at his office on Monday (Jul 8). Giri Prasta confirmed that so far his party had not got any explanation directly from the parties concerned, especially the Bali government, regarding the reclamation plan and the development of Benoa Bay. He himself admitted to get the information from news in the mass media. As a matter of fact, the reclamation plan and development of Benoa Bay should also be communicated to county government. Components of Badung society, especially the Badung House, had the right to know about the existence of such a plan. If the plan would later on have a broad impact on society, the people’s representatives of Badung would also bear the impact. “Badung must know about the program in its own region. Necessarily, it should involve the public components of Badung. It’s called a transparent program and not covered up. Yet, should there be any impacts of the project, ultimately we are in Badung County will be requested for the accountability,” he asserted. Giri Prasta himself claimed to worry the reclamation would result in an increasingly more serious damage to the environment. It was feared that some points of the island would sink due to the large-scale reclamation. He also revealed about the sand dredging plan on Sawangan Beach for the reclamation of Benoa Bay. He firmly said it might not happen again because the effects were only detrimental to the environment and society. “It may not happen. Please do not perform any reclamation by taking materials from other areas. When using mud sediment of river estuary, it does not matter. Taking backfill materials from the other beach will have an impact on the beach itself such as on the ocean currents,” he said. Meanwhile, another legislator of the Badung House, Wayan Puspa Negara, said the reclamation should forward the concept of conservation and protection against the environment and its ecosystem. Moreover, there was a mangrove Grand Forest Park (Tahura) in the area. The reclamation should be able to provide an opportunity for the surrounding communities mostly consisting of fishermen. Price of onion skyrockets Negara (Bali Post)— The price of some groceries in the Negara Market showed an increase. Even, the most significant increase occurred to the price of onion and chicken meat. The increase continued after the increase following the fuel price hike. Such an increase continued when getting into the fasting period and will certainly rise again just before the holiday. Based on observation in the Negara Market, Tuesday (Jul 9), the price of spices rose as well. Cayenne pepper and onion showed the most significant increase. Previously, onion was sold for IDR 28,000 per kg and then increased to IDR 36,000-40,000 per kg. Meanwhile, cayenne pepper raised IDR 10,000 per kg. A number of traders in the market claimed to follow the price of distributor from Java. “When the

fuel price increased, the price has risen and now rises again. We just follow the price of the market,” said Suryanti, 38, one of the traders. Likewise, the price of chicken meat also increased 25-30 percent from the price on normal days. Broiler, for instance, also underwent a price hike from IDR 26,000 to IDR 30,000 per kg. While the price of kampong chicken gradually increased from IDR 50,000 to IDR

70,000. The price hike happened due to increasing demand, especially before the Eid. However, the price increase did not apply to beef which was relatively stable since the fuel price hike last month. Fake money distributor Convicted 2 Years Jail Denpasar (Bali Post)Three fake money distributors of IDR 50,000 involving Gusti Made Oka, Sukardi Anto and Haji Djamaludin got convicted 2 years jail by judge panel led by Erly Sulistyarini in Denpasar District Court last Tuesday (9/7). Erly agreed to public prosecutors, I Gusti Nyoman Widana and Eddy Artha Wijaya, conviction that stated that the three accused have had and distributed the fake money and as stated by Criminal

Code section 245. The conviction was received well by accused and their legal counselors. The crime started when I Gusti Made Oka told Sukardi Anto that he is in need of money to. Knowing that, Oka was then offered by Anto to use the fake money for shopping to get original cash. Oka was interested in the accumulation of 3:1 (three fake IDR 50,000 cash can be exchanged with original IDR 50,000 cash). Sukardi ordered IDR 5 million of fake money from Haji Dja-

maluddin for Oka yet only IDR 4 million can be given. Yet when the fake money was about to be used by Oka in a Tohpati Petrol Station, East Denpasar, the worker was suspicious of the cash and required Oka’s wallet. Inside it 18 tender of 50,000 were found. Oka was then reported to the East Denpasar Police and then jailed. Therefore, he explained that the pillars and the floors of the toll road would be made in the factory before being implanted or placed in the sea. “If the floors and pillars are directly made in the sea, it will pollute the waters,” he said, adding that the pile of soil for the Rp2.4

trillion worth of the toll road would also be taken into account in order not to destroy the mangrove forest around the bay. Akhmad noted that since the start of the toll road construction in December 2011, PT Jasamarga has planted around 15,000 mangrove seedlings along the coast of Benoa Bay as part of mangrove preservation effort.

He said Public Works Ministry and Transportation Ministry were scheduled to make feasibility study on July 25, 2013 about the operation of the freeway. “After the feasibility study is over, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will inaugurate the road on August 14 in conjunction with the anniversary of Bali provincial government,” he said.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The pilots of Asiana Flight 214 relied on automated cockpit equipment to control the jetliner’s speed as they landed at San Francisco airport, but realized too late they were flying too low and too slow before the aircraft crashed, investigators said Tuesday. The new details were not conclusive about the cause of Saturday’s crash, but they raised potential areas of focus: Was there a mistake made in setting the automatic speed control, did it malfunction or were the pilots not fully aware of what the plane was doing? One of the most puzzling aspects of the crash has been why the wide-body Boeing 777 jet came in far too low and slow, clipping its landing gear and then its tail on a rocky seawall just short the runway. The crash killed two of the 307 people and injured scores of others, most not seriously. Among those injured were two flight attendants in the back of the plane, who survived despite being thrown onto the runway when the plane slammed into the seawall and the tail broke off. National Transportation Safety Board chairman Deborah Hersman said the autothrottle was set for 157 mph and the pilots assumed it was controlling the plane’s airspeed. However, the autothrottle was only “armed” or ready for activation, she said. Anti-graft body meets Century case supervisory team Antara

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) finally met a summons of the Bank Century case supervisory team at the House of Representatives (DPR) to attend a meeting at the parliament building here on Wednesday. However, the meeting led by Deputy House Speaker Pramono Anung and attended by KPK Chief Abraham Samad and members of the supervisory team was held behind closed-doors. “Since the meeting will discuss a number of KPK’s findings it cannot be open to the general public. The supervisory team needs time to further study the findings,” Pramono said when opening the meeting.

The meeting was later held behind closed-doors. KPK Chief Abraham Samad told the press prior to the meeting that the anti-graft body would convey all developments in the handling of the Century case to the meeting. “We will convey a progress report on the handling of the Century case, including the results of a search on Bank Indonesia office,” he said.

The KPK would make an all-out effort to bring the alleged corruption case related to the bailouts to Bank Century to justice this year, he said. The commission had three times ignored a summons to attend a meeting with the team for various reasons. Abraham said the KPK could not meet the summons because it had other agenda at the same time.

In the company of First Lady Ani Yudhoyono and several cabinet ministers, the head of state visited the quake victims at Ketol sub-district in Central Aceh district on Tuesday for a dialog with them. “We will continue to make the post disaster management for the victims,” the president said, adding that during a meeting in Jakarta a day before he left for Aceh, it was decided that the government would provide financial assistance for the quake victims and renovate the damaged houses.

During the visit to the quake victims, the head of state asked them to remain calm and patient in face of the disaster that may happen anytime without warning. President Yudhoyono said he had instructed the national Search and Rescue Board, the National Defense Forces and the National Police to continue to search for other missing victims in Central Aceh district. At least 40 people were killed after the earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale rocked the two districts on July 2. Meanwhile, Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah earlier said that he was grateful to the central government for its quick response to the disaster. “The Aceh government is thankful to the central government for its quick reaction by sending relief aid to the affected area, including the visit by a number of ministers a day after the quake struck the area. We are also thankful to the commander of the Iskandar Muda regional military command and the chief of the Aceh provincial police and their ranks and files who have helped victims,” he said.

JAKARTA - Indonesian mosques must limit their use of loudspeakers to stop disrupting the lives of those who reside nearby, an official urged Wednesday at the start of the holy month of Ramadan. The approximately 800,000 mosques in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country go into overdrive during Ramadan, noisily blasting out Koranic verses from the early hours. But the Mosques Council, an independent body which groups many of the country’s mosques, said it had asked the places of worship to cut back on their use of loudspeakers. “Mosques are always more noisy during Ramadan so we have asked them to limit the use of their loudspeakers,” said deputy council head Masdar Masudi. The mosques begin their sermons earlier than usual in Ramadan, when Muslims forgo food, drink and sex between dawn and dusk, as they call people for the “sahur” breakfast that is eaten each day before fasting begins. Masudi said it was acceptable for mosques to use loudspeakers for the short call to prayer but they should limit their use beyond that. “A quiet atmosphere is very important so that Muslims can perform their religious duties solemnly during this holy month,” said the official, adding he hoped mosques would continue to limit their use of speakers even after Ramadan. There have been repeated calls for mosques to turn down the volume over the years following complaints from residents, but previous efforts have met with little success.

The figures came after the International Monetary Fund on Tuesday cut its global economic growth forecast, citing new downside risks in key emerging-market economies and a deeper recession in the eurozone. The IMF projected the world economy to expand 3.1 percent in 2013, down from its April estimate of 3.3 percent. China and other emerging economic powers now face new risks, it warned, “including the possibility of a longer growth slowdown”. China’s economy grew 7.8 percent in 2012, its worst performance in 13 years, on the back of slack demand for exports and weakness at home. The first three months of this year saw expansion of just 7.7 percent, disappointing analysts who had expected growth to accelerate after showing strength at the end of 2012. The government has set a growth target for 2013 of 7.5 percent, the same as last year’s, as it looks to retool its economic model from exports to domestic consumption. Beijing is due to announce gross domestic product figures for the second quarter on Monday.

New Zealand, Taiwan sign free trade deal Associated Press WELLINGTON — New Zealand on Wednesday signed a free trade agreement with Taiwan in a deliberately low-key ceremony designed to demonstrate the South Pacific nation’s fealty to its formal relations with mainland China. The location of the signing ceremony at a university and the absence of senior officials from either side underscored New Zealand’s interest in maintaining its increasingly important ties with Beijing. Five years ago, New Zealand became the first developed nation to sign a free trade deal with China, which has since become its largest export market. In contrast to New Zealand, the deal was widely trumpeted in Taiwan, which is eager to break out of its China-imposed diplomatic isolation. It was Taiwan’s first free trade agreement with a developed country and, from its point of view, a victory that was more political than economic. Television crews were on hand to beam the signing ceremony live to Taiwan. Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, and the Chinese government goes out of its way to pressure other countries to give short shrift to Taiwanese attempts to expand the democratic island’s interna-

tional profile. But it also seeks to assist the Taiwanese government of President Ma Ying-jeou in solidifying the island’s economy as a way of promoting the interests of Ma’s China-friendly Nationalist Party among an increasingly disaffected Taiwanese electorate. Like most Western nations, New Zealand doesn’t recognize Taiwan as an independent country. To complete the deal, New Zealand used the wording and status from the World Trade Organization, which describes Taiwan as a “separate customs territory.” The New Zealander who signed the deal was Stephen Payton, director of the Commerce and Industry Office which comes under the banner of the Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce. That meant he wasn’t technically a government official, although he had been seconded into the role from his government job. “We have a no surprises relationship

with China,” Payton said. “So yes, they are comfortable with what we are doing.” Payton said the gradual removal of tariffs from the beef, fruit and other products it exports to Taiwan would result in savings of 40 million New Zealand dollars ($31 million) in the first year and NZ$75 million after 12 years when all the tariffs expired. Taiwan will also win some small economic gains when New Zealand tariffs on machine tools, steel plates and bicycles are removed under the deal. Elliott Charng, who signed the agreement for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New Zealand, said the deal was a “win-win.” In Taipei, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister David Lin shrugged off questions about the choice of venue, saying that Victoria University of Wellington was an “ideal site” for the ceremony because the university assisted in the feasibility study of the deal when talks began in 2011. The agreement “will enhance interests on both sides,” Lin said. “The deal was signed under the WTO framework, and it had nothing to do with mainland China.” Taiwan is also negotiating free trade deals with India and Singapore.

ISTANBUL - Turkish police allowed thousands of protesters who have been trying to block the redevelopment of a park in Istanbul to break their Ramadan fast on Tuesday before resuming efforts to get them to leave the area. The previous night police fired teargas and water cannon at protesters as they tried to prevent them gathering in Gezi Park, which has become the focal point of protests against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s government. Two leftist Muslim groups sympathetic to the protests, the Revolutionary Muslims and AntiCapitalist Muslims, hosted fastbreaking iftar dinner in a nearby pedestrian street by the Gezi Park on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The local municipality also hosted a dinner in Taksim Square by the Gezi Park and people marched in the park afterwards. Police used loudspeakers to warn people to leave, while people booed and clapped, but the police did not intervene.

The park had been sealed off for three weeks after police expelled the residents of a protest camp there. “I hope the state will understand what these people have been trying to say with the protests. Thousands of Calif inmates refuse meals in protest Associated Press Writer SACRAMENTO, California — Nearly 30,000 of the 133,000 inmates in California prisons refused meals for the second day in support of inmates held in solitary confinement at Pelican Bay State Prison, corrections officials said Tuesday. The meals were refused on Monday and Tuesday as inmates announced what they said would be the third extended hunger strike in

two years protesting conditions for the more than 4,500 gang members, gang associates and serious offenders held in the security housing units. Many of those inmates are kept in solitary confinement, sometimes for decades. The protest is the latest disruption for a prison system already facing legal and logistical challenges. Officials are struggling to move about 2,600 inmates from two Central Valley prisons because they are

considered especially vulnerable to a potentially fatal airborne fungus. They also are appealing a separate court order requiring the state to release nearly 10,000 inmates by year’s end to reduce prison crowding as the best way to improve conditions for sick and mentally ill inmates. Next Mars rover should gather rocks, soil Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES — The next rover to Mars should hunt for signs of ancient life and gather rocks that a future mission could bring back to Earth for the first time, a team of scientists appointed by the U.S. space agency said Tuesday. The scientists’ new report outlines ambitious goals for a mission to Mars that NASA wants to launch in 2020. The plan marked the first concrete step toward returning a piece of Mars to Earth, but NASA said it’s unclear how or when the cache would be retrieved. “We’re not signing up to a timetable or a commitment for a follow-on mission,” said NASA sciences chief John Grunsfeld, adding that it’s up to future planners to decide the next steps. NASA has the ultimate say on what the future rover will accomplish within its $1.5 billion budget, excluding the cost of the launch vehicle. The rover will be modeled after Curiosity, which captivated the world last year with its daring controlled-crash landing near the Martian equator. Despite the successful touchdown, the $2.5 billion mission ran over budget and faced technical problems during develop-

ment. To save money, engineers will dust off Curiosity’s blueprints and reuse spare parts where possible. The future rover would build on discoveries of past Mars missions. Spirit and Opportunity, launched in 2004, uncovered plenty of geologic evidence of past water. Curiosity found a habitable environment where microbes could thrive. Scientists want Curiosity’s successor to carry high-tech instruments that can peer at rocks on a microscopic level in search of chemical clues that might have been left behind by microbes, if they existed. Since the Martian surface is a harsh environment with no signs of water, the panel said it didn’t make sense to look for current life. That would be a “foolish investment,” said Brown University planetary geologist John Mustard, who headed the NASAappointed team.

Exercise physiologist and running coach Tom Holland is a veteran of more than 60 marathons and 21 Ironman triathlons, many held in sweltering conditions including an Ironman in Malaysia, where the temperature soared to 104 degrees (40 Celsius) and humidity to 99 percent. “I actually love running in the brutal heat and humidity and have trained myself accordingly,” said

Holland, author of “The Marathon Man.” When running in the heat, he recommends adjusting speed and goals and said runners should expect to run more slowly and should focus on covering the distance. “I paced a 60-year-old client in the 2012 Boston Marathon where the race hit 90 degrees,” he said. “When I saw how hot it would be, we adjusted his race goal from 3:40 (three hours, 40 minutes) to just finishing.” Running in heat is difficult, Holland explained, because blood has two conflicting interests supplying working muscles and going to the skin to cool the body down. “So there is less blood for the muscles, our hearts have to work harder, our heart rate increases, and the relative intensity of the run increases,” he said. “You simply cannot run as fast in hot conditions.”

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — Elisabeth Hasselbeck is leaving the desk at “The View” for the couch on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends.” The news network said Tuesday that Hasselbeck will join co-anchors Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade on the threehour morning show “Fox & Friends” in September. Wednesday will be her last day after a decade on “The View.” Hasselbeck parlayed her popularity as a contestant on the TV reality show “Survivor” into a job on Barbara Walters’ ABC daytime show in 2003. During her decade on the show, she authored two cookbooks. She’s politically more conservative than her co-hosts on “The View,” which often led to some contentious moments.
