Residents’ home and mosque at Jalak Putih flooded Singaraja (Bali Post)—
Courtyard of residents living in the housing complex of Jalan Jalak Putih, Banyuasri village, Buleleng, was hit by flooding on Sunday (Jun 9). Not only that, the mosque courtyard in the area was also inundated. Luckily, the puddles did not come into the house, so that people’s furniture could be saved. Neighborhood Head of the Jalak Putih housing complex, Ketut Derestika, said at the location last Sunday the flooding happened since heavy rains hit Buleleng district from the afternoon to the evening. The active water channel to irrigate rice field around the settlement was unable to drain water volume from the south. As a result, the overflowing water came into the courtyard of residents reaching the adult-knee high. The overflowing water happened
because the irrigation channel was narrow and occurred a silting. Even, the channel was often clogged by rubbish, so that when it rained the water was impeded and overflowed into people’s home yard. Aside from people’s home yard, floodwater also drowned the mosque courtyard in the region. Fortunately, the puddles could quickly be drained through the gutter and the rain stopped. As a result, the water did not puddle up into the pray-
ing space in the mosque. “Every heavy rain, the condition is like this because the irrigation channel is narrow and shallow, so that it cannot hold the rainwater flowing from the south,” he said. According to Derestika, as the lower official he had repeatedly complained about the matter to technical agency in Buleleng County. The complaint related to request for deepening the irrigation channel so that it could hold larger volume
of rainwater. Besides, his party had often appealed to residents to keep the environment and never disposed rubbish into the channel. Therefore, when it rained the rubbish would not clog up the water and the threat of flash floods could be avoided. “We’ve submitted it but there is no response. Meanwhile, a number of urban areas were also flooded due to heavy rain such as at Kaliuntu village, Jalan Serma Karma and Jalan Laksamana. The most severe flooding occurred on Jalan Laksamana, exactly ten meters west of Baktiseraga headman’s office.

Perpetrators using hypnosis mode seemed to wander in Bali. As evidence, a Russian citizen named Pavel Pleteshkov, 27, claimed to have become a hypnosis victim around Jalan Legian Kuta, Thursday night (Jun 6). As a result, the victim suffered a loss worth IDR 18 million. The case had also been reported to Denpasar Metro Police and the perpetrators were under pursuit. Information in police station explained on Sunday (Jun 9) that the perpetrator amounted to some six people. Initially, the victim living at Vila Layar at Jalan Pangkung Sari 10X, Seminyak, Kuta, Badung, was about to withdraw money at a Commonwealth ATM located at a minimarket on Jalan Legian, Kuta, at 10:36 p.m. Before withdrawing the money, the victim was approached by six unidentified people. He was offered a medicinal product by the perpetrators. As he was unfamiliar with the perpetrators, the victim working as a businessman rejected it. It was unknown what happened later, one of the perpetrators held his hand for a moment. Then, the victim was taken to chat.
From that point, the victim was not aware and any command given by the perpetrators was undertaken by the victim. “The victim was asked to withdraw his money at the ATM,” the source said last Sunday. The source explained the victim unconsciously withdrew the money for three times with a total of IDR 18 million. In fact, the money withdrawn was given to the perpetrators. Once the perpetrators held the money, they immediately fled. After a few minutes, the victim realized if he had undergone a criminal action. “It was the chronology of the report made by the victim to Denpasar Metro Police,” said the source asking not to publish his name. On knowing that matter, the victim reported the case to Denpasar Metro Police. Afterward, police examined the crime scene and interrogated witnesses, but the identity of perpetrators had not been identified. Lately, a suggestion came into view to make Kertha Gosa a cultural heritage so that it will be managed by central government, including conducting a thorough restoration. According to one of the royal figures of Klungkung Grand Palace, Tjokorda Bagus Oka, Monday (May 20), the proposal was legitimate to do, especially for the preservation of Kertha Gosa. “As long as it complies with the provisions, I support if the Kertha

waters needing to be preserved because it had an important value for history, science, education, religion, and/or culture through stipulation process. Chapter III, article 5 described about the criteria of cultural heritage regarding the building or structure that could be proposed to be included in cultural heritage. Any object, building or structure could be considered a cultural heritage if they met the criteria, had been 50 years old or more, represented the style of the shortest of 50 years old, had a significant meaning to history, science, education, religion, and/or culture as well and had a value for strengthening the national cultural identity.

High wave, Perancak fishermen worried Negara (Bali Post)Bad weather lately attacked Jembrana shores causing high currents occurring all the time moreover last Sunday (9/6) it caused a traditional fisherman, Wayan Bagia, from Perancak, Jembrana sank and managed to be saved by other fishermen that saw his boat turned upside down. The high current also caused tens of fishermen can’t parked to shore and so their boats stayed in the ocean for around four hours. Victim admitted to have got capsized around 10 am local time which at the time he managed to get 15 kilograms of tongkol fishes. The incident happened 300 meters off shore where heavy rain and strong wind abruptly occurred. Bagia was alone on his wounded. He then got wounded on the left waist, got his boat broken to pieces and his fishing result all gone in the middle of the water. At least IDR 2 million loss was experienced. Wayan Lara, another fisherman admitted was going to shore on the same time as Bagia but knowing the bad weather have caused such incident, him and other fishermen chose to stay to avoid such thing happening to any of them as well. According to Perancak Head Village, I Nyoman Wijana, stated in two weeks the bad weather caused at least four fishermen from Perancak sank and had its boat capsized. There were no casualties, they were all saved yet their equipments were not. Thw village has given whatever they had as aid to help them go fishing again. (kmb26)

As informed last Sunday (9/6), locals admitted to have disappointed by the government who promised to do so when actually their land has been taken. In other hand these locals have bought other lands and due to no compensation has been given yet, they had to borrow money for their down payment. One local, Nyoman Okadana, stated he and his colleagues have had their lands measured completely by the National Land Board (BPN) Buleleng. When asked to the Board’s team, the compensation is stated to being processed by administration and should be able to be received first week of June 2013, yet nothing happened. These disappointed locals from Ularan and Ringdikit Village of Seririt also Titab and Telaga Villages of Busungbiu, will come down to close the project route on Monday (10/6) morning, reaching 100 locals. It is known that the project was under the State Budget and Expenses while land freeing is central, Bali and Buleleng Province’s responsibility which has been done in stages due to the minim budget they have. Terminal and bungalows given condoms Tabanan (Bali Post)— High incidence of HIV/AIDS transmission made the Tabanan Health Agency work harder. One of the efforts was aggressively distributing condoms for the safety of free sexual activity. Such an action was made to a few locations being prone to the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Among them, the officers targeted the Pesiapan Terminal region and bungalows. At least 60 points were made distribution center for the condoms. The safety device had been disseminated for free since last year. The officer targeted the hangout locations of commercial sex workers (PSK). “As the target, we focused on the prostitutes at Pesiapan Terminal. And the condom outlet is handled by their own employer,” said the Head of the Tabanan Health Agency, Nyoman Suratmika, last week. The condom outlet program involved the officers from the Tabanan AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA). He described there were a variety of efforts to minimize the high incidence of HIV/AIDS. Aside from socialization and suggesting mutually faithful movement faithful, the Health Agency and AIDS Prevention Commission also took last measure for prevention of HIV/AIDS through the use of condoms if people were forced to have free sex. “The most vulnerable transmission of HIV/AIDS is
through free sex. Then, the distribution of condoms is expected to reduce the transmission,” he explained. Other than terminal and bungalows, the condoms were also distributed to dimly-lit cafés. According to Suratmika, provision of condom was not the only effort to minimize the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Coastal revetment restricts movement of turtle Negara (Bali Post)—
Along the coast of Jembrana is a natural habitat for turtles to lay egg. It has become an annual cycle for female turtles being ready to lay egg to go up onto the beach to look for nest. However, the recent widespread abrasion on some beaches has restricted the movement of turtle looking for nests. As a result, the turtle nest tends to decrease. A turtle conservationist, I Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, met recently at Perancak revealed that one of the problems faced by turtle conservation in Bali in general was the reduction of coastal points where turtle nested due to natural effects. It could be kindled by the diminishing coastal land as getting eroded by abrasion and extreme weather. Such condition caused the turtle formerly laying eggs on the beach to switch. Additionally, it was also caused by instant handling of the abrasion tending to use concrete revetment like on Cupel, Candikusuma, Gilimanuk, Pengeragoan and several other beaches. Indirectly, the turtles would lose their nest. The data of the Kurma Asih turtle conservationist group since 1997 indicated the amount of turtle nest found constantly increased. At first was found four nests, but in 2010 the nest had reached 455 pieces. However, in the following years due to widespread effects of abrasion, the number of nest obtained slightly decreased. Total nest found on Pengeragoan Beach to Gilimanuk Beach reached 2,500 nests. Since 1997, the group had released at least 115,000 turtle hatchlings into their habitat in the sea. “In the future, the existence of turtle is very important and we must preserve it. The conservation is our shared responsibility. I think the making of revetment will not resolve the problem, including the abrasion at Perancak here,” he said. Without immediate handling, he worried about the abrasion to be more widespread, including at Perancak, location of the turtle conservation group. (kmb26)
Spicing up Endek clothes of Bangli Spicing Up Endek Clothes of BangliRegional Handicraft Council (Dekranasda) of Bangli County organized Endek Fashion Contest at the Giri Kusuma Cultural Hall, Thursday (May 30). With the theme “My Endek, My Culture,” the cultural contest was followed by 38 participants constituting the representatives of regional working unit (SKPD) and regional and state-owned enterprises in Bangli. Aside from design or motif, the criteria assessed by the jury panel were the neatness of sewing, clothing (standard fashion design used by the agency uniform), stage control elements and expression of each participant. Of the criteria, design or motif was the most significant element in the contest. “The contest is expected to stimulate the development of endek clothes,” said Chairperson of the Regional Handicraft Council of Bangli, Mrs. Erik Gianyar. The endek fashion contest, explained Mrs. Erik Gianyar, was an effort to preserve the potential of weaving craft, so that it was not undermined in harmony with the passage of times. Moreover, the endek clothes had been favored by many lineups, both young and old. “Celebration of the 809th anniversary of Bangli town is a good moment to introduce further the endek clothes,” she said. Meanwhile, First Assistant to Regional Secretary of Bangli Government, Alit Darmawan, said that such an event would be able to stimulate the development of endek clothes in Bangli County. Similar event should continue to be held, so that it could contribute to the development of endek in Bali. “The best design of endek in the contest will be used as sample of working clothes by Bangli government in the future,” he said.

Grain price in Tabanan the lowest in Bali Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Price of harvest dry grain (GKP) produced by farmers in Bali averagely decreased in May 2013. The lowest grain price was experienced by farmers in Tabanan reaching IDR 3,300 per kg for Ciherang variety, while the highest price was enjoyed by farmers in Gianyar reaching IDR 3,750 per kg for the same Ciherang variety. The Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali, I Gde Suarsa, recently said the lowest price doubling as the benchmark of government purchase price (HPP) was IDR 3,300 per kg at the farmer level and IDR 3,350 per kg at milling level. Such price benchmark was the lowest price of grain in the market. It also meant that farmers’ income in the recent harvest season decreased due to the abundance of rice production in the field. “We estimate the harvest season of rice in Bali will continue until June 2013,” he said. Suarsa said that farmers of rice producers in Bali Province generally sold their grain in the form of harvest dry grain. In May 2013, the price of grain categorized into the quality of harvest dry grain averagely decreased by 2.28 percent compared to previous month. Meanwhile, at the level of milling showed a decline of 1.96 percent. He added the BPS also found that
31.75 percent of farmers remained to sell grain beyond the quality or low quality, whose moisture content was above 25 percent. Nevertheless, said Suarsa, averagely the grain price in Bali in May 2013 belonged to the quality of harvest dry grain above the price benchmark, namely IDR 3,435.70 per kg at farmer level and IDR 3,502.67 per kg at milling level. Taliban launch large attack on Kabul international airport Reuters
KABUL - Seven Taliban insurgents including suicide bombers attacked the main airport in the Afghan capital, Kabul, early on Monday, with explosions and gunfire heard near an area that also houses major foreign military bases. The attackers took up positions inside a partially constructed building next to the international airport, interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said, and fought Afghan security forces for about four hours before the raid ended. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Roads were sealed off and flights out of the airport were quickly canceled, while incoming flights were diverted to the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Attacks on the heavily guarded airport, used by civilians and the military, are relatively rare and represent an ambitious target for insurgents, with recent assaults staged against less well-protected targets. While it did not escalate dramatically, Monday’s assault will add to mounting concerns over how the 352,000-strong Afghan security forces will cope with an intensifying insurgency once most foreign combat troops leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

JOHANNESBURG — Former President Nelson Mandela’s condition remains serious but stable on Monday, his third day in a Pretoria hospital, the South African government said. “His condition is unchanged,” the office of President Jacob Zuma said in a brief statement. Mandela, who is 94 years old, was taken to a hospital early Saturday to be treated for a recurring lung infection. At that time, Zuma’s office described the anti-apartheid leader’s condition as “serious but stable.” On Sunday, members of Mandela’s family were seen visiting the hospital where the anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate is believed to be staying. Mandela, also known by his clan name Madiba, has been hospitalized several times in recent months. During a hospital stay that ended April 6, doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia and drained fluid from his chest. “President Jacob Zuma reiterates
his call for South Africa to pray for Madiba and the family during this time,” the presidential statement said. On April 29, state television broadcast footage of a visit by Zuma and other leaders of the ruling African National Congress to Mandela’s home. They seized Helen Rumbali and three female relatives, set the building on fire and took the women away to be tortured. Their alleged crime: Witchcraft. After being repeatedly slashed with knives, Rumbali’s older sister and two teenage nieces were released following negotiations with police. Rumbali, a 40-something former schoolteacher, was beheaded. Her assailants claimed they had clear proof that Rumbali had used sorcery to kill another villager who recently died of sickness: The victim’s grave bore the marks of black magic, and a swarm of fire flies apparently led witch hunters to Rumbali’s home. Violence linked to witch hunts is an increasingly visible problem in Papua New Guinea — a diverse tribal society of more than 800 languages and 7 million people who are mostly subsistence farmers. Experts say witch hunting appears to be spreading to parts of the country where the ruthless practices never took place before. There is no clear explanation for the apparent uptick in killings in parts of the South Pacific nation, and even government officials seem at a loss to say why this is happening. Chalmers led the charge and James broke out of a shooting slump and finished the game with a flurry as the Heat used a 33-5 run to beat the San Antonio Spurs 103-84 in Game 2 of the finals on Sunday night. “I know my shooters only need a little bit of room to get the shot off,” James said. “For me, I struggled offensively, but the shooters made some good shots.” James missed 10 of his first 13 shots and the Heat trailed by a point late in the third quarter before starting to play the kind of flawless basketball that led them to a team-record 66 wins this season. Chalmers finished with 19 points and James had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists while shooting only 7 of 17 from the field. The Heat made 10 of 19 3-pointers and got 13 points from Ray Allen, and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Chris Bosh. San Antonio was incredibly precise in its 92-88 victory in Game 1, but committed 17 turnovers on Sunday, leading to 19 Miami points. Danny Green made all six of his shots, including five 3-pointers, to score 17 points to lead the Spurs. Tony Parker had 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting, and Tim Duncan shot 3 of 13 and finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. “They were really aggressive, obviously,” Parker said about a Heat team determined not to go down 0-2 in this best-of-seven series. “You have to give a lot of credit to their defense. They played great defense tonight. They were very aggressive on the pick-and-rolls and all our drives.” The Spurs host Game 3 on Tuesday night. James insisted he wouldn’t force himself to do more to lead the team after getting a triple-double in Game 1, and he never seized the opportunity in Game 2 to take control
of the scoring. He didn’t need to. Not with Chalmers making big shots and the Heat’s defense making the Spurs look shaky all night. The often-maligned Chalmers is often seen in Heat highlights being yelled at by James or another Miami veteran. But he’s as cocky as any of the superstars in Miami, and he has the big-moment plays to back up his bravado, such as his 25 points in Game 4 of last year’s NBA Finals. The point guard sparked the Heat late in the third after San Antonio had taken a 62-61 lead. He converted two three-point plays, Allen and Mike Miller nailed 3-pointers, and James made only his third field goal of the game during a 14-3 run that sent Miami to the fourth with a 75-65 advantage. They opened the fourth with nine straight points to make it 84-65, erasing any chance of their first two-game losing streak in five months. “LeBron couldn’t get into a rhythm early on and other guys stepped up,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “He showed great poise and trust in not getting caught up in feeling like he had to make ‘the play’ or score, but rather he would facilitate or let other guys make plays. And that’s what they did.” The Spurs had only four turnovers in Game 1, matching an NBA Finals record low. But they surpassed that total in the first quarter, with Parker committing two of their five turnovers after not coughing it up once in the opener. The Spurs’ unrecognizable sloppy play continued, with Parker firing passes on the pick-and-roll right into a Heat player’s leg on multiple occasions and even getting benched barely three minutes into the third quarter. Red Bull’s Horner says Sebastian Vettel is still getting stronger SEBASTIAN Vettel’s victory in the Canadian Grand Prix showed that he is still improving as a driver, according to his Red Bull boss Christian Horner. The triple world champion took his third win of the season in Montreal with the biggest winning margin of the campaign that helped open up a 36-point advantage in the drivers’ standings. Horner had nothing but praise for the way that Vettel has shrugged off tyre frustrations this year to eke out a healthy title gap, and he said that all he was seeing was an improvement in form. “He is continuing to get stronger, continuing to get better,” explained Horner. “He is a very focused and determined young man, and has achieved a huge amount in his career. “But the impressive thing about him is how much desire he has to continue to improve himself. He obviously wants to achieve as much as he can.” Horner said that there was also evidence for the first time that Vettel may be willing to sacrifice some of his youthful exuberance, like chasing the fastest lap in the closing stages. “Some things don’t surprise us, like the fastest lap thing - which of course he was going for,” he said. “I said to Rocky [his race engineer], ‘get him under control’.
“So he said to Sebastian after he went purple on the first sector - ‘Monaco 1988, Senna’. “I thought that might work and Seb came back on the radio and said, ‘Alright, I am only joking’ – with a purple sector. So he backed off.” Despite Vettel’s advantage in the title standings, Horner also sees no reason to believe that his team is now in the driving seat for the championship. “We are just focusing on trying to get the maximum out of ourselves and the drivers at each individual event,” he said. “While the points look healthy at the moment, Fernando [Alonso] put in another strong race and you cannot afford for any complacency. “The margins can rapidly be eroded.”

Brazil set for Confed Cup despite difficulties Associated Press Writer
SAO PAULO — Even if Brazil does well in hosting the Confederations Cup, the troubled preparations for the tournament will be hard to ignore. The World Cup warm-up tournament will begin as scheduled on Saturday, but only after Brazil drew complaints from FIFA and local critics for the delays and cost overruns. Few infrastructure projects were completed and the nation’s capacity to host the tournament was put in doubt several times. Ticket sales and the volunteer program were considered a success, but even the official instrument created by local organizers to help fans cheer turned out to be a failure. If there is one thing Brazil can say it learned for the 2014 World Cup, it’s that it can’t make the same mistakes it did in preparing for the Confederations Cup. FIFA has been saying loud and clear that it will not tolerate the same problems ahead of football’s main event next year. “The Confederations Cup is a major tournament and it has really grown into a football spectacle,” said Walter De Gregorio, FIFA Communications and Public Affairs Director. “It also represents a great opportunity to fine-tune the preparations for next year, when a global audience will be coming for the World Cup. It’s a major operational test for us, we will go through all the operations in a full tournament, which is good for next year.” Brazil was picked as World Cup host in 2007, knowing it would need to build stadiums and improve infrastructure across the country. But those remain the greatest problems as the Confederations Cup looms closer. Only two of the six Confedera-
tions Cup stadiums were ready by the December deadline originally established by FIFA, and subsequent deadlines also were missed by some of the venues. Because of construction delays, the cities of Salvador and Recife nearly were dropped from the tournament, being approved just before the tournament’s draw last year. FIFA usually wants venues to go through at least three test events, but it had to make an exception in Brazil because of the series of delays. FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said that football’s governing body would accept two events in each of the venues, but in the end only one full test event happened in some of the stadiums. That was the case in Brasilia, host of the opener on June 15, and in Rio de Janeiro, home of the final at the Maracana Stadium on June 30. The Brasilia stadium missed three deadlines, while Maracana ran the risk of not hosting a single full test event after a judge ordered the cancellation of Brazil’s friendly against England on June 2 because the venue was allegedly unsafe. Japan booked their spot at the 2014 World Cup finals with a draw against Australia last week but the Asian champions have a score to settle in their final qualifier on Tuesday and have no intention of going easy on Iraq in Doha. Iraq held Japan to a 2-2 draw in the Qatari capital 20 years

Two decades on, it is Group B basement dwellers Iraq who must beat Japan in Doha to give themselves any realistic chance of qualifying for Brazil next year. PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil — Oscar, Hernanes and Lucas scored second-half goals on Sunday as Brazil defeated France 3-0 in its final warm-up before the Confederations Cup. Chelsea playmaker Oscar opened the scoring with a shot from close range in the 54th minute. Hernanes added to the lead with a left-footed attempt from inside the area in the 85th, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas sealed the victory by converting a penalty kick in injury time. The result ended Brazil’s 21-year winless run against France, and gave the “Selecao” its first victory over a former World Cup champion in nearly four years. Kupang, E Nusa Tenggara - All 46 passengers of a plane operated by Merpati Airlines survived after it skidded off the El Tari airport runway in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on Monday morning. “The 46 passengers, including one infant and four crew members survived the incident. It is also reported that the shocked passengers were immediately rushed to a nearby Air Force`s Hospital,” said Head of state-owned airport company PT Angkasa Pura El Tari Kupang Airport Imam Pramono told reporters. He said that the causes of the incident is unknown, and still need further investigation by authorities. El Tari Kupang Airport Air Force Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Pilot Eko Dono Indarto said that his personnel directly placed police line at the scene for the investigation. “We do not know the causes of the incident, so it needs further investigation to determine the causes,” he said. According to witnesses, the plane stopped in place while the front wheels touched the runway while landing. As a result, the aircraft skidded out of the runway. The passengers survived the incident, but some of them who were still shocked after the incident immediately rushed to the hospital. “I was shocked when I heard the explosion. A hard impact may occur while landing and made the plane skidded off the runway,” said Benny Lapebesi, a resident.

The policy is made after Saudi Arabian government announced it will give the chance for illegal foreign workers to work in the country as long as they can complete the documents required to stay. “During the past weeks there were thousands of Indonesian workers who come to the consulate office to get the document. The process runs smoothly. We regret to see the chaotic situation happening last Sunday. Right now the consulate general has added more officers to fasten the process for those workers to get their documents,” said the spokesman.

LONDON - The dollar jumped higher against the yen and Japanese stocks led a rise in world shares on Monday as signs of economic momentum in the United States and Japan outweighed worries about a slowdown in China. A central bank forecast that the French economy will grow slightly in the second quarter and a pickup in euro zone investor sentiment for June also added to the positive outlook. But markets are still fixated on the timing of a potential slowdown in the Federal Reserve’s bondbuying program and are likely to remain volatile after U.S. data last week, including the key jobs report, did little to change expectations. “(The jobs data) hasn’t changed the market’s view much on the timing of Fed tapering,” said Kasper Kirkegaard, currency strategist at Danske Bank. With the United States continuing to drive a world economic recovery, the dollar rose 1 percent to 98.56 yen, recovering some 3.5 percent from Friday’s low of 94.98, which was its weakest level since April 4. The yen weakness and data showing Japan’s economy grew 1.0 percent in January-March, revised up slightly from a preliminary estimate, lifted the Nikkei index
(.N225) 4.9 percent for its biggest one-day gain since March 2011. The Nikkei has now swung by more than 3 percent on all but two of the last 11 sessions, five of those by more than 4 percent, making it one of the most volatile periods since the height of the financial crisis at the end of 2008. Analysts and traders will now scrutinize forthcoming U.S. data for clues on the timing of the potential tapering. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian longhaul budget carrier AirAsia X launched an up to $370 million initial public offering on Monday, seeking funds for its fleet expansion as it targets buoyant travel demand in Asia-Pacific and looks to fend off regional rivals. The carrier, which competes with Singapore Airlines’ (SIAL.SI) Scoot and Qantas Airways’ (QAN.AX) Jetstar, has said it plans to add 13 Airbus A330 widebodied planes in total this year and next to take its fleet to 23 aircraft by 2014. The expansion comes as passenger traffic in the Asia-Pacific region more doubled between 1998 and 2012, putting air travel activity in the region on par with North America, according to figures from research firm Strategic Airport Planning Ltd, which were cited in AirAsia X’s preliminary IPO prospectus. “The focus in on the sweet-spot flights of 4 to 8, or possibly 9 hours,” Tony Fernandes, AirAsia X’s founder, told reporters at the IPO launch. He added that AirAsia X plans to strengthen its position in its key markets in Australia and East Asia. AirAsia X and its shareholders are offering 790.1 million shares in an indicative price range for institutional investors
of 1.15 ringgit to 1.45 ringgit per share, according to a term sheet of the deal seen by Reuters. About 75 percent of the offering will come from new shares. The company plans to use 33.3 percent of the proceeds to repay bank loans, with another 32.6 percent set for capital expenditure and 29.7 percent as general working capital. AirAsia X’s chief executive, Azran Osman Rani, said the carrier’s expansion would come through more flights on existing routes as well as from new routes within some countries where it already operates. In an interview with Reuters in January, Azran said the carrier was aiming to build brand awareness in new markets like China and Japan and establish crucial early dominance on key routes after dropping its loss-making Europe and India routes last year. “You want to make sure you are well ahead both in terms of dominating individual routes but also dominating across the networks,” he said then. CIMB (CIMB.KL), Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX) and Maybank (MBBM. KL) were hired as joint global coordinators on the IPO. Treasury to sell 30 million shares of GM stock Associated Press Writer
DETROIT — The U.S. government plans to sell another 30 million shares of General Motors stock in a public offering on Thursday as it speeds up efforts to divest itself from a stake in the auto giant that it got in a bailout four years ago. The Treasury Department will set the price for the shares after the markets close on Thursday, with the sale taking place shortly thereafter. A United Auto Workers retiree health care trust fund will join the sale and sell 20 million shares, pushing the size of the offering to 50 million shares. General Motors Co. stock fell 76 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $34.20 in Wednesday afternoon trading, but it has seen huge growth recently. The stock hit $35.49 on Tuesday, the highest point since December of 2010, according to FactSet. Shares are up about 19 percent since the beginning of the year. The public offering will help accelerate the government’s exit from
owning GM stock, which it got in exchange for a $49.5 billion bailout in 2008 and 2009. Late last year the government still owned 500 million shares of the automaker, but GM bought 200 million shares for $5.5 billion in December, and the Treasury pledged to gradually sell its remaining stake by early next year. GM has longed for the government to exit partial ownership of the company, hoping to shed the derisive nickname “Government Motors,” as well as attract customers who have shunned GM cars because it took government money. GM nearly ran out of cash late in 2008 and needed the government cash to make it through bankruptcy protection. While under government ownership, the company also falls under executive pay caps that it says hinder recruiting of top talent. 2 Koreas to hold seniorlevel meeting in Seoul Associated Press Writer SEOUL, South Korea — North and South Korea agreed Monday to hold senior-level talks this week in Seoul, a breakthrough of sorts to ease tensions after Pyongyang’s recent threats of nuclear war and Seoul’s vows of counterstrikes. The two-day meeting starting Wednesday will focus on stalled cooperation projects, including the resumption of operations at a jointlyrun factory park near the border in North Korea that was the last remaining symbol of inter-Korean rapprochement until Pyongyang pulled out its workers in April during heightened tensions that followed its February nuclear test. The details of the upcoming talks were ironed out in a nearly 17-hour negotiating session by lower-level officials. Those discussions began Sunday in the countries’ first government-level meeting on the Korean Peninsula in more than two years and took place at the village of Panmunjom on their heavily armed border, near where the armistice ending the three-year Korean
War was signed 60 years ago next month. That truce has never been replaced with a peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula technically at war. The agreement to hold the talks was announced in a statement early Monday by South Korea’s Unification Ministry, which is responsible for North Korea matters. North Korea’s official news agency, KCNA, also reported the agreement. It’s still unclear who will represent each side in what will likely be the highest-level talks between the Koreas in years. But dialogue at any level marks an improvement in the countries’ abysmal ties. The last several years have seen North Korean nuclear tests, long-range rocket launches and attacks blamed on the North that killed
50 South Koreans in 2010. The meeting that starts Wednesday will also include discussions on resuming South Korean tours to a North Korean mountain resort, the reunion of separated families and other humanitarian issues, officials said. The issue most crucial to Washington, however — a push to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons — isn’t on the official agenda. While there was broad agreement, Seoul’s Unification Ministry said in a statement, sticking points arose over the delegation heads and the agenda. Seoul said it will send a senior-level official responsible for North Korearelated issues while Pyongyang said it would send a senior-level government official, without elaborating. North Korea said that in addition to the rapprochement projects, the two sides would also discuss how to jointly commemorate past inter-Korean statements, including one settled during a landmark 2000 summit between the countries’ leaders, civilian exchanges and other joint collaboration matters.

Turkey’s Erdogan warns patience with protests will run out Reuters ISTANBUL/ANKARA - Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan warned protesters who have taken to the streets across Turkey demanding his resignation that his patience has its limits and compared the unrest with an army attempt six years ago to curb his power. Riot police used teargas and water cannon to disperse anti-government protesters from a square in the capital, Ankara, just a few kilometers from where Erdogan spoke. He held six rallies on Sunday, a measure of tensions after a week of the biggest demonstrations and worst rioting of his decade in power. Thousands waved red Turkish flags and shouted Allahu Akbar (God Is Greatest) as he accused protesters of attacking women wearing headscarves and desecrating mosques by taking beer bottles into them. “I believe in Erdogan and his path. We will not let some looters hijack our country and our flag,” said a housewife who gave her name as Zeynep, waving a national flag with Erdogan’s picture emblazoned on it. In the commercial center Istanbul, tens of thousands flooded the central Taksim Square, where protests began nine days ago when police used teargas and water cannon against a peaceful demonstration over plans to build on a park there. Many see Turkey’s secular order threatened by Erdogan. Protesters, many camped out in tents, now control a large area around the square, with approach roads barricaded by masonry, paving stones and steel rods. Police have withdrawn completely from the area, water cannon kept hundreds of meters away by the side of the Bosphorus waterway. Western countries have held up Erdogan’s Turkey as an example of an Islamic democracy that could be emulated elsewhere in the Middle East. Violent police action, however, has drawn criticism from the West and Erdogan has increasingly accused foreign forces of trying to aggravate the troubles. He also rounded on speculators, foreign and domestic, in the country’s capital markets, vowing to “choke” those who he said were growing rich off “the sweat of the people”, and urging Turks to put their money in state not private banks. “Those who attempt to sink the bourse, you will collapse ... If we catch your speculation, we will choke you. No matter who you are, we will choke you,” he said. Turkey’s financial markets were turbulent last week and investors are preparing for more volatility this week. Early on Friday, the lira hit its weakest point against its euro/dollar basket since October 2011, while Istanbul’s main share index lost around 15 percent over the week. The yield of Turkey’s two-year benchmark sovereign bond hit a six-month high on Thursday.

Americans’ expectations of privacy have diminished remarkably since Sept. 10, 2001 — and only partly because of the terror attacks that happened the next day. Laws were passed to take up the fight against shadowy terrorists by giving authorities access to information that previously was off limits. At the same time, technologies intended to make Americans’ everyday lives easier have also made it easier for corporations — and the government — to track their movements and habits. Here are seven ways in which our world has become a less private place: —In the wake of the terror attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 gave the federal government unprecedented access to telephone and computer exchanges and expanded the government’s right to wiretap. But it also dictated financial, library, travel, video rental, phone, medical, church, synagogue or mosque records held by third parties can be searched without your knowledge or consent, as long as the government says it is
acting against terrorism. —Facebook, founded in 2004, has prompted hundreds of millions of people to put details of their lives on public display. The company has come under fire for making people’s personal photos available for use in advertisements, but media reports suggest the government has scoured Facebook’s servers for audio, video, contacts, e-mails and other documents. —”Smartphones” with built-in GPS capabilities could allow users to be electronically tracked. As of this year, more than half of all American adults use smartphones, according to the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. —Remote frequency identification, or RFID, chips. The Department of Agriculture used it to keep track of cattle being medicated, but RFID technology is now in everything from commuter passes to key cards. Tags

“China is in space for the long haul. The U.S. ignoring that and refusing to work with China will neither stop them nor slow them down,” said Joan Johnson-Freese, an expert on the Chinese space program at the U.S. Naval War College. The Shenzhou 10 spacecraft — its name means “sacred vessel” — is to be launched aboard a Long March 2F rocket, a safer and more reliable version of that used in previous missions. It will transport the crew for a 12-day stay aboard the Tiangong 1, which functions as an experimental prototype for a much larger Chinese space station to be launched in 2020. The space classrooms mark the boldest step so far to bring the military-backed program into the lives of ordinary Chinese and follows in the footsteps of NASA, which used student outreach to inspire interest in space exploration and sustain support for its budgets. Thus far, Chinese astronauts have been paraded before the public at rallies and other events, but they’ve had almost no genuine interaction with ordinary Chinese. NEW YORK — Apple is expected to reveal a digital radio service and changes to the software behind iPhones and iPads on Monday as the company opens its annual conference for software developers. Apple hasn’t said what it will unveil at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. But the major announcements are expected during Monday’s keynote presentation. Last year, Apple used the conference to announce its own mapping service, better integration with social networks and improvements to virtual assistant Siri. It also announced thinner MacBooks with high-resolution screens. The conference runs through Friday. This year, Apple is expected to show off a simplified look on iPhones and iPads. If the speculation is correct, it would be the most radical design change since the iPhone made its debut in 2007, showing consumers that phones could do much more than make calls and exchange messages. This week’s event comes at an important time for Apple. The company’s stock price has fallen amid concerns that another breakthrough product isn’t imminent. Although CEO Tim Cook has said people shouldn’t expect new products until the fall, Apple is likely to preview how future products will function in its unveiling of new services and features. Monday’s highlight is expected to be an updated version of iOS, the software that runs iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches. It will be called iOS 7 and will come with new devices expected to go on sale this fall. Owners of recent models such as last fall’s iPhone 5 will likely be eligible for free upgrades. Icons in iOS now have a three-dimensional look that tries to mimic the real-world counterparts of certain apps. For instance, the icon for the Notes app looks like a yellow notepad and the Contacts app is represented by a leather-bound address book. The speculation is that Apple will do away with that theme in iOS 7. Instead, icons will look plain and simple, offering more consistency from app to app. The new design is likely to favor black and white elements rather than splashes of color.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Hobbits and elves drawing tourists to New Zealand Associated Press Writer
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Hobbits, elves and dragons appear to be luring tourists to New Zealand as fans await their first glimpse of the second movie in “The Hobbit” trilogy. Figures released this month by government agency Tourism New Zealand show that international vacations to the South Pacific nation rose 10 percent from January through April when compared to the same period last year. The agency said a survey indicated that 8.5 percent of visitors cited “The Hobbit” as one reason for coming and that 13 percent took part in some kind of hobbit-themed tourism like visiting a film set. Kinky Boots’ struts off with the most Tony Awards Associated Press Writer NEW YORK — The feel-good musical “Kinky Boots,” with songs by pop star and Broadway newcomer Cyndi Lauper, strutted away with a leading six 2013 Tony Awards on Sunday, including best musical, best original score and best leading man. Christopher Durang’s comical “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won the best play Tony. “Matilda the Musical” and “Pippin” won four awards each and two other shows — “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “The Nance” — shared three awards each. Tom Hanks left empty-handed, a Broadway newcomer not fated to be a “Lucky Guy.” Neil Patrick Harris was back for his fourth turn as host and was once again crucial to keeping the show funny and smart. He opened with a razzle-dazzle bang amid dozens of dancers and singers — even getting boxer Mike Tyson to hoof — and closed it three hours later by rapping with Audra McDonald to a reworked “Empire State of Mind.” The big, opening number started with Harris simply holding a guitar in a pub like “Once” but quickly morphed into a flashy number that showcased performers from almost a dozen musicals. Harris sang “It’s bigger! Tonight it’s bigger,” jumped through a hoop, vanished from a box and promised a “truly legendary
show” before glitter guns went off. Lauper, who popularized the hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” was part of an impressive group of women who took top honors. Diane Paulus and Pam MacKinnon both won for directing — a rare time women have won directing Tonys for both a musical and a play in the same year. (It happened most recently at the 1998
Tonys.) It was also a night that celebrated diversity: Of the eight trophies for acting, four went to African-Americans. “Kinky Boots” — based on a 2005 film about a failing shoe factory that turns to making drag queen boots — also won for choreography and two technical awards, and Billy Porter won for leading man in a musical.

The trilogy is directed by New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson and shot in his home country. The opener “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” was released December 2012. It received mixed reviews but proved extraordinarily popular with audiences, earning a little over $1 billion at the box office. In an email, Jackson’s spokesman Matt Dravitzki said fans can expect “a surprise or two” in this week’s trailer, “but I can’t say anything more than that!”
