Surviving Bee Gee mourns Robin Gibb’s loss Associated Press Writer

THAME, England — Surviving Bee Gee Barry Gibb lamented the loss of his brother, telling mourners on Friday that he would miss Robin Gibb’s “magnificent mind and his beautiful heart.” He said Robin’s death from cancer last month at age 62 means that he would now be reunited with his late twin brother Maurice, who died in 2003. “They were both beautiful,” Barry Gibb said. “And now they’re together. They’re actually together.” Many mourners at St. Mary’s Church wept as Robin’s coffin was brought into the church while the Bee Gees classic “How Deep is Your Love” was played. Robin’s widow Dwina and his elderly mother Barbara were close behind. Barbara Gibb has outlived three of her four sons. Singer Andy Gibb, who had a successful solo career, died in 1988. The Bee Gees, known for soaring harmonies and disco tunes, were one of the most popular bands in history. Robin Gibb also enjoyed success as a solo artist and as a songwriter. Crowds of mourners lined the streets of the southern English town before the service as a glass-sided horse-drawn carriage pulled Robin Gibb’s coffin to the church. Irish wolfhounds, Ollie and Missy, along with friends and family. Barry Gibb told the congregation that his late brother Robin’s humor was always present, even in times of tension between the two. “We were laughing all the way,” Barry Gibb said. “Sometimes crying. God knows how much we argued. Even right up to the end we found conflict with each other, which now means nothing.” Guests filed out of the church to the sound of the Bee Gees’ song “I Started A Joke,” which includes the line: “Till I finally died, which started the whole world living.” Gibb was then buried in the churchyard, with a piper playing “Ellan Vannin,” the unofficial anthem of the Isle of Man, where the Bee Gees were born. Mourners tossed red roses into the grave. A memorial service is scheduled for a later date.

LOS ANGELES — Lindsay Lohan emerged uninjured from a collision with a dump truck on a coastal highway near Los Angeles on Friday, returning to the set of her new movie hours after the accident left her sports car crumpled. Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis said there was no sign Lohan was impaired at the time of the accident and said his agency would continue to investigate who was at fault in the wreck. The truck’s driver was uninjured and that driver also showed no signs of driving under the influence, Lewis said. Police are seeking witnesses to the crash, writing in a news release that detectives were trying to determine who was driving. Lohan was traveling with a male assistant to the set of her new film; the assistant was also uninjured. “We’re treating this as a regular accident,” Lewis said. The agency is accepting anonymous tips about the wreck, and offering a $1,000 reward if it leads to an arrest. The accident at around 11:40 a.m. Friday on the Pacific Coast Highway occurred while Lohan was on her way to film scenes for the Lifetime movie “Liz and Dick,” which chronicles the love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Determination of Jatiluwih area in Penebel as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in fact has not had a maximum impact for local farmers. It is indicated by the number of tourist visit to the destination stays normal and even it seems a small number. Several irrigation infrastructures have not been touched by improvements. However, after the determination by UNESCO there had been no indications of repairs made against the damaged irrigation channels. “Farmers expected the irrigation channels can be repaired. Anyhow, we have become a tourist attraction here,” he said. Aside from repair to the minimal

infrastructure, said Semarajaya, the number of tourist visit to the region had not indicated any sharp increase. On average, 150-200 tourists made a visit to the region each day. “The tourist visit remains normal, we do not yet know the cause,” he explained whereas it was currently a holiday season in western countries. Ideally, the visit rate should increase and have an impact on farmers at Jatiluwih. The farmland area spreading across 300 hectares was cultivated by at least 100 farmers. They all relied on livelihood from the farming of red rice. The lack of tourist visits to Jatiluwih was also disclosed by a tourist guide, Sudira. The man from Denpasar admitted if the demand of guests for sightseeing to the agricultural destination was still fairly minimal, even there was no improvement. “If guests do not request to come here (Jatiluwih—Ed), we will not escort to this destination,” he said. He hoped that after determination by UNESCO, the demand of tourist for visiting Jatiluwih would increase. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

When the tsunami hit the northern coast of Japan last year, the waves ripped four dock floats the size of freight train boxcars from their pilings in the fishing port of Misawa and turned them over to the whims of wind and currents. One floated up on a nearby island. Two have not been seen again. But one made an incredible journey across 5,000 miles of ocean that ended this week on a popular Oregon beach. Along for the ride were hundreds of millions of individual organisms, including a tiny species of crab, a species of algae, and a little starfish all native to Japan that have scientists concerned if they get a chance to spread out on the West Coast. “This is a very clear threat,” said John Chapman, a research scientist at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Ore., where the dock washed up early Tuesday. “... It’s incredibly difficult to predict what will happen next.” A dozen volunteers scraped the dock clean of marine organisms and sterilized it with torches Thursday to prevent the spread of invasive species, said Chris Havel, spokesman for the state Department of Parks and Recreation, which is overseeing

the dock’s fate. The volunteers removed a ton and a half of material from the dock, and buried it above the high-water line, Havel said. Biologists have identified one species of seaweed, known as wakame, that is native to Japan and has established in Southern California but has not yet been seen in Oregon, he said. While scientists expect much of the floating debris to follow the currents to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an accumulation of millions of tons of small bits of plastic floating in the northern Pacific, tsunami debris that can catch the wind is making its way to North America. Futuristic Computer Program Arrives Ahead of Computer Quantum computers don’t exist yet, but physicists already have a software program ready for them to use. A group of scientists has designed an algorithm that they say could run on any future quantum computer to simulate all the possible interactions between two colliding particles. The program could be used to model how the universe evolved after the Big Bang, when conditions cooled enough for the formation of subatomic particles called quarks, which then collided with each other to form protons and neutrons. Eventually, the first atoms were born. The complexity of a particle’s quantum properties makes these post-Big Bang interactions far too complicated for existing computers to simulate. Scientists are hoping for the eventual creation of computers based on the principles of quantum physics. Such computers would use quantum processor switches that could exist in both “on” and “off” states simultaneously, enabling them to consider all possible solutions to a problem at once. Quantum computers should be able to perform incredibly complex calculations at a

small fraction of the time required by current technology. “We have this theoretical model of the quantum computer, and one of the big questions is: What physical processes that occur in nature can that model represent efficiently?” Stephen Jordan of the National Institute of Standards and Technology said in a statement. “Maybe particle collisions, maybe the early universe after the Big Bang? Can we use a quantum computer to simulate them and tell us what to expect?” Jordan, a theorist in the institute’s applied and computational mathematics division, and his colleagues detail their algorithm in a paper published in the June 1 issue of the journal Science. Experts say quantum computers could be decades away but it’s not too soon to think about what they can do. “Universal quantum computers in the strict sense do not yet exist, but it is still of fundamental importance to know which problems they can solve more efficiently than classical computers,” wrote scientists, led by Philipp Hauke of Spain’s Institute of Photonic Sciences, in an accompanying essay in the same issue of Science.

Bamboo points way to green construction in Bali

SIBANG KAJA - Strong, light and cheaper than steel poles, bamboo is ubiquitous across Asia as scaffolding. So much so that in recognition of the material’s versatility, the Indonesian island of Bali has made it an emblem of sustainable construction, replacing buildings of concrete and steel with far greener alternatives. An entire school, luxury villas and even a chocolate factory are the latest structures to rise from bamboo skeletons as the plant’s green credentials and strength are hailed. The factory, which opened last year and produces organic drinking chocolate and cocoa butter, is the latest in a string of buildings on the island, including homes and businesses, to be built of bamboo. Erected in the village of Sibang Kaja between the resort island’s smoggy capital Denpasar and the forests of Ubud, the factory is the initiative of specialty food firm Big Tree Farms, which claims the 2,550square-metre (27,500-square-foot) facility is the biggest commercial bamboo building in the world.

“Bamboo is unmatched as a sustainable building material. What it can do is remarkable,” Big Tree Farms co-founder Ben Ripple, 37, told AFP. “It grows far more quickly than timber and doesn’t destroy the land it’s grown on,” said Ripple, an American from Connecticut. “Our factory can be packed up and moved in days, so if we decided to shut it down one day, we’re not going to damage the rice paddies we sit on.” The 100 hectares (247 acres) of paddies sit inside a so-called “bamboo triangle,” with the factory, school and villas standing at each of the three points. Such ambitious bamboo projects in Bali are mostly driven by ecoconscious foreigners. With studies showing construction to be one of the world’s least sustainable industries -- eating up around half of the globe’s nonrenewable resources -- sustainable

construction is slowly taking root around the world. It is among the key topics for discussion at the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, which opens June 20 in Rio de Janeiro. In Sibang, the tawny brown bamboo buildings with their grass thatched roofs appear to be rising from the earth. The three-storey chocolate factory is pieced together using a complex system of scissor trusses and bolts, thanks to clever architecture. It resembles the traditional longhouses found on Borneo island and was made with more than 18,000 metres (59,000 feet) of bamboo from Bali and Java. At Sibang’s nearby Green School, the 240 students -most of them children of expatriates -- learn in semi-outdoor classrooms decked with bamboo furniture. The school, which opened in 2008 and was the magnet for the other two projects, has 25 bamboo buildings, the main one being a stilt-structure constructed with 2,500 bamboo poles, or culms. “In Hong Kong and China, they make new skyscrapers of concrete

and glass using bamboo scaffolding. But here, the workmen stood on steel scaffolding to build this bamboo building. That’s always seemed funny to me,” said Green School admissions head Ben Macrory, from New York. “In most parts of Asia, bamboo is seen as the poor man’s timber.” Not, however, in Sibang, where the bamboo villas that nestle between the palm trees are worth $350,000 to $700,000 each. Like decadent treehouses for adults, they have semi-outdoor areas and include innovative bamboo flooring that resembles smooth timber and jellybean-shaped coffee tables made from thin bamboo slats. Bamboo -- technically a grass -- has been used in building for centuries because of its impressive strengthto-weight ratio. Jules Janssen, an authority on bamboo in the Netherlands, says that the weight of a 5,000-kilogram (11,000-pound) elephant can be supported by a short bamboo stub with a surface area of just 10 square centimetres (1.5 square inches). One reason bamboo is so environmentally-friendly is the speed at

which it grows, according to Terry Sunderland, a scientist at the Centre for International Forestry Research in Indonesia. “In China, eucalyptus can grow at three to four metres (10-13 feet) a year, which is very impressive for timber. But building-quality bamboo will grow between six and 10 metres (20-33 feet) in that time,” he said. And unlike trees that rarely grow back once felled, bamboo will continue to produce new shoots even after cutting. But even bamboo has its drawbacks. Without intensive treatment, it is prone to rotting after exposure to water. It also catches fire relatively easily, which is why many countries limit bamboo structures to just a few storeys. Ripple acknowledged that building with bamboo was not foolproof, but expressed optimism that the technology to protect it from the elements will improve. “A friend we work with here always says bamboo needs a hat, rain jacket and boots,” he said. “We’re lacking on the rain jacket a bit, but we’re looking at non-toxic materials to give it some protection.”

Even hoteliers admit that the situation is unsustainable. “To be really honest at this point I don’t think that Myanmar is ready yet to cope with the high demand of mass tourism,” said Thomas Moons, front office manager at the colonial-style Governor’s Residence hotel in Yangon. “At the moment in terms of avail-

ability and accommodation that we’re able to offer, it’s just not enough to cope with demand,” he told AFP. “People might think that if they come to Myanmar they will have a cheap holiday when it’s completely the opposite.” While few doubt Myanmar’s attraction to tourists, some people returning to the country say they enjoyed it more before the hordes arrived. Klaus, a 61-year-old German travelling with his wife in the remote western town of Sittwe, said they were “disappointed” by their third trip to Myanmar. “There are too many people this time, even though it is April (the peak of hot season),” he told AFP.

“People in hotels used to be so nice -- smiling and taking care of us -- but they don’t have time anymore... And hotel prices have gone through the roof.” International arrivals have rocketed, with almost 365,000 foreigners jetting into the main city Yangon in 2011, up 22 percent on the previous year and almost double the figure for 2003, industry figures show. This year is likely to see another jump, with more than 175,000 arrivals between January and April, against almost 130,000 in the same period of 2011. According to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, there are only around 8,000 hotels rooms in the city.

Canadian tech town feels BlackBerry’s decline

WATERLOO — President Barack Obama couldn’t bear to part with his BlackBerry. Oprah Winfrey declared it one of her “favorite things.” It could be so addictive that it was nicknamed “the CrackBerry.” Then came a new generation of competing smartphones, and suddenly the BlackBerry, that gamechanging breakthrough in personal connectedness, looks ancient. There is even talk that the fate of Research In Motion, the company that fathered the BlackBerry in 1999, is no longer certain as its flagship property rapidly loses market share to flashier phones like Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android-driven models. With more than $2 billion in cash, bankruptcy for RIM seems highly unlikely in the near term, but these are troubling times for Waterloo, Ontario, the town of 100,000 that was transformed by the BlackBerry into Canada’s Silicon Valley. RIM is Canada’s most valuable technology company, an international icon so prestigious that founder Mike Lazaridis and its other driving force, Jim Balsillie, are on an official government list of national heroes, alongside the likes of Alexander Graham Bell. RIM’s U.S. share of the smartphone market belly-flopped from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent in 2011 according to market researcher NPD Group. The company still has 78 million active subscribers across the globe, but last month RIM issued a warning that it will lose money for the second consecutive quarter, will lay off workers this year, and has hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options. Last July it slashed 2,000 jobs. John Lind says RIM’s impact on his field, commercial real estate, is enormous. “We talk about RIM in

However, when going down the mountain with the altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level, a student fell into a ravine. The victim Agus Bayu Sentana, 16, suffered a broken bone on right ankle. Chief of Selat Police, Nyoman Susila, with permission of the Karangasem Police Chief, Jefri Torunde, confirmed the incident last Saturday in Selat. He said the victim could be evacuated from the ravine where he fell around 3:00 p.m. local time. The victim had been evacuated to the Pasar Agung Temple post, where the entourage originally camped or spent their night. Later, the

victim was rushed to Sanglah Hospital. Immediately, the victim was rushed to Emergency Room of Sanglah Hospital. Allegedly, the victim fell into the ravine due to exhaustion. Then, his feet slipped. The victim was evacuated from an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level. For the evacuation, the team involved the element of Karangasem SAR, Bali Police SAR, Karan-

gasem Police, Selat Police, regional disaster management agency (BPBD) of Karangasem, Sebudi residents and friends of the victim who had previously gone down the mountain. Chief of Selat Police, Nyoman Susila, said the victim fell approximately at 08:00 a.m. The entourage previously climbed the Mount Agung from the climbing post at Pasar Agung Temple, Sebudi, Selat. Residents of Pacut hamlet, Rejasa village, Penebel, were recently hit by unrest. It happened because the bridge connecting the local village to other subdistricts set to be fragile. This condition made them anxious. They worried that their village would be isolated if the bridge over the Yeh Ho River collapsed. Moreover, many parts of the wooden bridge had been holey and broken. Fragility of the bridge has taken place for a long time, about two years. The most dangerous damage is that many bolts binding the wooden parts of the bridge came off. As a result, the pieces of the wood are holey and broken. Similarly, the side iron divider was in apprehensive condition and looked fragile. “Residents have long complained about the bridge condition. However, there are no indications to be repaired,” complained Agung Sumantra, one of the local residents, Saturday (Jun 9). This man explained the bridge set to be built in 1994 and financed with the funds obtained from non-governmental organization and governmental assistance. Since its establishment, the bridge had been renovated twice and the last renovation was in 2005. The recent renovation was intended to replace the slabs used as track of vehicle wheels. “Now, many wooden elements have been broken and holey,” he said. Similar complaint was also expressed by another resident, Gede Yudiana. This man had jumped into the river because the bridge was fragile a few years ago. Fortunately, his life could have been helped after plunging from a height of 22 meters. He explained the bridge was the main route for residents to go to Tabanan town and some other subdistricts. Without the bridge, the residents should turn along 25 km. Despite connecting a small road, the bridge was always crowded with cars, even trucks conveying goods. Such condition made people more anxious. “The route can connect the residents to Batukaru Temple, Tambawaras up to Penatahan. Therefore, it is always crowded by passing vehicles,” he said. Since the condition was fragile, residents hoped the bridge could be promptly repaired because the bridge was the only and closest route for residents. If the bridge collapsed, they would be isolated and had to turn around. Chief of administrative hamlet of Pacut, Made Juliastra, explained the bridge fragility had long been complained by residents. Even, residents had proposed the closure for heavy vehicles. Since it belonged to regency road, the proposal of residents ended in stalemate. Consequently, until this moment many heavy vehicles were desperate to cross the bridge.

Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard will move out of her official Canberra residence, in part due to some bad-mannered possums which have made their home in its roof. an interview with The Sunday Telegraph. “There was much shooing of people out of the dining room in a way that looked -- it wasn’t rudely done. “But it was because someone had spotted that wee was making its way down the wall to one of the very precious paintings from the National Gallery.” Government officials last year announced that the 40-room Georgian revival-style mansion known as The Lodge would undergo a major renovation to fix the leaking roof, redo the electrical wiring and remove asbestos.

SPLIT, Croatia — Riot police watched on as several hundred people, including some government ministers, marched unhindered through the Croatian town of Split on Saturday, many carrying flags and banners reading “Gay is OK” and “We are all equal.” Authorities had pledged to secure the pride event as a sign of determination to protect gay and other human rights ahead of joining the European Union in 2013. Police said that they had briefly detained more than 40 people, but that there was no unrest despite threats of violence. Last year, extremists threw bottles and rocks at participants, drawing international condemnation. The crowd walked along a route that was fenced off by the police, while a helicopter flew overhead and a water cannon was parked nearby. Participants urged more rights for Croatia’s gays and lesbians. “We want to be equal, we want equality for our families,” activist Mirjana Kucer told the gathering. “We have to stand in defense of every person in Croatia, and let them be whatever she or he wants to be,” Minister for Foreign Affairs Vesna Pusic, t. “People should have the freedom and right to be what they want. And no one should persecute, attack, beat and discriminate them just because of what they want to be.” Local police chief Ivica Tolusic said police were “more than pleased” that the event had passed without incident. Also Saturday, a march in support of the Split event was held in the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka, where some 300 people took part. Anti-gay violence is common in the conservative Balkans. INDONESIA President revises regulation on deputy ministers Antara

JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a new presidential regulation on the status of deputy ministers, in the wake of a recent Supreme Court ruling. “The presidential regulation was signed by the President yesterday and would be made known to the public soon,” said presidential spokesman Julian A Pasha, who was accompanying the President on a visit to Ambon, Maluku, on Friday. In its ruling, the Supreme Court pointed out that Article 10 of Law Number 39 of 2008 was inconsistent with the Constitution. Several parties had previously filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court, stating the selection process of deputy ministers was unconstitutional. The Supreme Court ruled the president did not violate the constitution when he appointed the deputy ministers. However, the court requested the president to review his regulation in order to bring it in line with the court`s ruling. The new presidential regulation number 60 of 2012 has replaced three previous regulations - number 47 of 2009, number 76 of 2011, and number 92 of 2011. The new regulation states deputy ministers report to ministers and assist them in implementation of ministerial duties, according the cabinet secretary`s official website. The tasks include assisting ministers in: the decisionmaking process; the implementation of working programs and contracts; giving recommenda-

tions and advice regarding the implementation of ministerial tasks and functions; controlling and monitoring the implementation of ministerial tasks and functions; and assessing and determining officials in ministries. Deputy ministers are appointed and dismissed by the President. Their term of office is same as that of the President`s, or ends when the President ends his tenure, according to the new regulation. Regarding the deputy ministers, financial rights and other perks, the regulation states they are less than those of ministers but more than those of echelon IA officials. The finance minister is yet to unveil the exact figures. According to Article 6 of the regulation, both civil servants and non-civil servants can become deputy ministers. Civil servants who are appointed as deputy ministers will be suspended as civil servants during their tenure and would be reinstated after the tenure is over. During their tenure as deputy ministers, retired civil servants would not get a pension. While carrying out their duties, the deputy ministers will be assisted by the secretariat general, directorate general, deputies, inspectorate general, and other agencies under their respective ministries.
