A hostage crisis involving Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail outside Jakarta has been resolved nearly two days after a deadly riot broke out at the prison, Indonesian officials said Thursday. Hundreds of police and armoured vehicles were deployed to rescue a police officer taken hostage by inmates after chaos erupted late Tuesday at the facility inside the Mobile Police Brigade headquarters in Depok, leaving five officers and an inmate dead. In the pre-dawn operation, 145 prisoners “surrendered unconditionally” and the hostage was released with no further casualties reported, said Chief Security Minister Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. Another ten inmates holding out against police later surrendered after tear gas was used, according to Wiranto. OSLO - Streaming numbers of Beyonce and Kanye West’s respective albums on rap mogul Jay Z’s music platform Tidal have been manipulated, allowing the stars excessive royalty payouts, a Norwegian newspaper said on Wednesday. In its investigative report, the financial daily Dagens Naeringsliv (DN) claimed the streaming numbers for Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade” were inflated through manipulated user play counts on Tidal. Jay Z bought the online service, which has its roots and significant activities in Oslo, through his holding Project Panther for $56 million in March 2015. His wife Beyonce and his former protege West both launched their albums exclusively on the streaming platform in 2016. DN’s revelations suggest that West and Beyonce, along with their record companies, received a disproportionate share of royalty payouts at the expense of other artists on Tidal. This could put the service in a tricky situation, as it has promised to pay rights holders more money than its other streaming rivals including Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer.

Based on an analysis provided by the Norwegian Center for Cyber and Information Security (CCIS), DN reported more than 320 million false plays of songs from the two albums over short periods, a manipulation which affected more than 1.7 million users. User accounts and play counts obtained by the newspaper revealed suspicious listening patterns, such as simultaneous playbacks of multiple songs by the same user or repeated playbacks of the same song at regular intervals. Bali’s economy grows 5.68 percent

Gap remains wide between urban and rural areas

DENPASAR - Bali’s economy is slowly recovering. In the first quarter of 2018, Bali’s economy grew 5.68 percent compared to the first quarter of 2017. Compared to the fourth quarter in 2017, Bali’s economy only grew 0.09 percent. Head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, said the 5.68-percent growth can be said to be good when compared to the fourth quarter of 2017. However, if compared to the first quarter of 2017, the growth in the first quarter of 2018 reaching 5.68 percent is not very encouraging as Bali’s economy grew 6.24 percent in the first quarter of 2017. Similarly, when compared to the first quarter of 2016 it grew 6.03 percent. “This means the growth in the

first quarter of 2018 is not better than what achieved in 2017. However, this 5.68-percent figure also indicates a good recovery situation after the eruption of Mount Agung disaster,” he said Monday (May 7). By quarter to quarter (qtq), Bali’s economy grew positively at 0.09 percent. Although the growth is small, it is positive. This positive number is different from previous years. also grew negative at 1 percent. Bali’s economy always growing above the national rate, in fact has not provided prosperity for the community. Scale of the gini ratio is 0-1. Meanwhile, the gini ratio of Bali as an indicator of inequality is 0.38, approaching 0. This means the gap in Bali is not too wide. However, if broken down, the gap between urban and rural areas will be seen. Statistical data revealed by Division Head of Social Statistics of BPS Bali, Asim Saputra, mentioned the highest poverty population occurred in two districts namely Karangasem and Buleleng with respectively 27,023 people and 37,841 people. In percentage, the poor population of Karangasem is 6.55 percent and Buleleng 5.74 percent. Both are rural areas which in fact also belong to agricultural area. Bali’s economy is concentrated in the south. Meanwhile, Northern Bali is largely agricultural and belongs to rural area that should be encouraged to pursue development in the south. “The inequality among the villagers is indeed small, but when compared to urban people, the gap will be seen to increasingly widen,” he said. The imbalance between the city and village makes urbanization in Bali increasingly higher. There is indeed an economic improvement while working in the city but not too significant. “If people can get an economic pie at their village, their economy will also increase. If they work in the city, their

income is deducted with house rental, so the remittent obtained and taken to the village is not much,” he said. According to him, to break the flow of urbanization can be done by advancing the Northern Bali by building infrastructure and simplifying access to Northern Bali. corded in Bali, it means the poor people in Bali that in fact working in the agricultural sector is not so depressed in terms of economy. They can still meet the needs of living standards. “Condition in Bali stays better than other regions such as NTB, NTT, East Java and Horseshoe,” he explained. Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Bali, A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said that Bali’s economy is still growing below 5.5 percent. This causes the economic imbalance in Bali. In addition, Bali’s imports are also quite high dominated by tourism needs. Added to the rising insignificant exports, Bali’s economic growth in terms of spending becomes disproportionate between exports and imports. The gap is evident from the high income in Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar categorized to be Southern Bali. The average income in Badung is IDR 36 million per month, Denpasar at IDR 24 million per month and Gianyar at IDR 18 to IDR 20 million per month. Meanwhile, the average income of Northern Bali consisting of Buleleng is IDR 1.6 million per month, Jembrana (IDR 1.9 million), and Bangli (IDR 1.5 million). Therefore, to overcome this gap Alit also agreed with the BPS that the key is infrastructure. With the presence of good infrastructure, investment will also grow in the Northern Bali regions. Widening of Jimbaran intersection threatened to cancel

Mangupura - The government’s plan to reduce congestion around Jimbaran intersection seems to be difficult to achieve. The process of land acquisition around the location has not been resolved. As a result, the Denpasar Metro Road Agency may cancel the plan of road widening project at the Jimbaran intersection. When confirmed on Tuesday (May 8), Commitment Making Officer (PPK) of the National Road Authority (BBPJN) VIII, Nyoman Yasmara, said that the development of Jimbaran intersection project has a letter from Badung district government. Essentially, in accordance with the schedule, the project must

be worked on immediately because it is in the same package as the Ngurah Rai Statue underpass project. They are expected to finish simultaneously in August or September. However, Yasmara said the process of land acquisition around the location has not been resolved. Until now, the land is not ready so his party cannot yet start the workmanship. “If the land still cannot be released, we will reduce the scope of work, in the sense that the contract will be cut or cannot be done because the land is not ready,” he concluded. In relation to the land acquisition process, some landholders are still reluctant to release their land be-

Arab Fashion Week eschews the abaya with resort-couture DUBAI - As the abaya witnesses a global resurgence, the sixth edition of Arab Fashion Week opened Wednesday with fallen angels, Rococo corsets, cupcake headbands and nary a kaftan in sight. Billed as an official fashion week alongside the famed Paris, Milan and London shows, the Arab edition of fashion week is the sole event dedicated entirely to ready-couture and pre-collections. Hosted on the Queen Elizabeth II cruise ship, the show, which prides itself on its Arab name, opened with angel-inspired and baroque kitsch collections by designers from Russia, Portugal, the UAE, the Philippines, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and more. Designer Furone One, loved in Dubai for his ethereal designs, opened the four-day affair with his “White Noise” resort collection, inspired by angels both cherubin and fallen. Kurma Asih turtle conservation group at Perancak village, Jembrana, is one of the conservation groups having tried the concept of ecotourism. Compared to similar conservation groups in other districts, the location is further away from tourism center. Actually, Perancak is the location of the largest turtle nest in Bali. In order to support the conservation concept, it needs synergy with the community. The ecotourism applied at Perancak village is trying to develop conservation with a slightly different approach. It implements the conservation- and community-based ecotourism development. Local people are involved to gain economic benefits. On that account, it can reduce the exploitation of turtles in this region. A turtle conservationist at Perancak, I Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, said the conservation effort is expected to be coupled with ecotourism to improve the economy of local community. “So, it can provide an alternative income for fishermen to create homestay for researchers and volunteers from various countries, not just from the results of fish catch. With this effort, it does not empower the Kurma Asih but the community of Perancak village in general,” he explained. The group ever won the Kalpataru for the category of environmental conservation in 2017. This group has started to preserve turtles since June 11, 1997. It was commenced with the breeding and educating the community. After that it could embrace fishermen that previously hunted turtles, but now save turtles. Until these days, the group has collected 17,000 turtle eggs. After being hatched, the hatchlings will be instantly released together with the community, students and institutions as a tourist attraction. (olo)

Thankfully, we’ll hold the second meeting on Thursday (May 11). We will have a dialogue together so that the local government knows the problem and can benefit both sides. NEGARA - A number of villages in Jembrana have recently developed rural tourism by utilizing their natural landscape. One thing that can help popularize these new attractions is social media. For instance, it has been experienced by JR Pancaseming Peak, Puncak Mawar or Rose Peak at Dewasana and Green Cliff at Yehembang Kangin village. One of the locations having a hilly landscape is the Puncak Mawar Hill at Dewasana hamlet, Pendem, Jembrana. Spot of the rural tourism located in the hills of Dewasana offers natural view contemporarily beautified. Initially, the area remaining beautiful and cool was difficult to be reached by community. Only a few people could climb to such a precipitous location. However, gradually the area on the hillside is arranged by the community and worth visiting. Bukit Mawar is located near the Batu Belah waterfall equally located at Dewasana. Batu Belah also has natural peculiarities in the hills. The flowing river water remains fresh surrounded by beautiful trees. In order not to get stuck with these two locations, the village will also develop other spots. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s veteran ex-leader Mahathir Mohamad, 92, won a historic election victory Thursday, in a political earthquake that toppled the country’s scandal-plagued premier and ousted a regime that had ruled for over six decades. In a stunning political upset that took pundits by surprise, Mahathir’s opposition alliance ended the long hold on power of the Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been in power in Malaysia since its birth as an independent country in 1957. The thumping victory capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years and came out of retirement to take on Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.

When he takes power, Mahathir will be the oldest prime minister in the world. Despite the shock result there were no reports of trouble on the streets, where pockets of celebration erupted overnight. A flag-waving crowd of supporters gathered on a field outside the headquarters of Mahathir’s party near Kuala Lumpur. Suva Selvan, a 48-year-old doctor, said he felt the country had just won its independence. “I feel that with this change we probably can see something better

in the future... our hope for the future is a better government, fair, free and united,” he told AFP. Defeat could just be the beginning of Najib’s troubles. Mahathir has vowed to bring him to justice over allegations that billions of dollars were looted from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, which the scandal-hit leader set up and oversaw. But at a press conference after his win, Mahathir vowed: “We are not seeking revenge. We want to restore the rule of law.” He said he would be sworn in

Mahathir’s return to the political frontlines saw him throw in his lot with an opposition alliance filled with parties that he crushed while in power, and which includes jailed opposition icon Anwar Ibrahim -his former nemesis. Anwar is due to be released from prison in June. Mahathir has vowed to get him a royal pardon, and later hand over the premiership to him. As well as seizing control of the national government, several state legislatures across the country fell into opposition hands for the first time, including the highly symbolic bastion of Johor, the birthplace of Najib’s party that was the lynchpin of the ruling coalition.

Lightning strikes kill dozens across Bangladesh

DHAKA - Dozens of Bangladeshis were killed in lightning strikes as pre-monsoon thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the South Asian country, an official said Thursday. Farmers harvesting rice in open fields made up the majority of victims, Iftekharul Islam, a director at Bangladesh’s disaster management department, told AFP.

“In the last 24 hours, 29 people have died from lightning in 12 districts. Almost all of them are farmers,” he said. Scores of people die every year after being struck by lightning during Bangladesh’s wet season, which runs from April to October, but officials say the numbers are exceptionally high this year. Islam said that more than 112

people had been killed in strikes in the first 10 days of May. “Every day 10-12 people are dying from lightning,” he explained, adding that it was instilling fear in farmers who harvest rice during this time of the year. Authorities declared lightning a natural disaster after 82 people were killed in a single day in May 2016.

Independent monitors estimated that some 349 Bangladeshis died from lightning that year. Experts say deaths are rising as Bangladesh, one of the world’s poorest nations, witnesses the increased deforestation of rural areas. Farmers are known to chop down trees to free up space to grow more rice. Disaster management officials

are trying to reduce the high death toll by planting five million palm trees to provide better shelter. “We have already planted 3.8 million palm trees. First ever Indigenous Celebration of its kind in Indonesia

Bali hosts 180 elders and youth from 7 different countries

Indigenous Celebration is a monumental event that will be taking place at Arma Museum and Resort , Ubud from May 11-13 featuring over 180 indigenous representatives - young and old from 7 different countries, including many from different parts of Indonesia as well as elder wisdom keepers who seldom leave their remote villages. Although there will be dance and music performances every night of the celebration this gathering is intended to be far more than a presentation of tribal dances. Over the course of the three day event, there will be exhibitions, booths and cultural art workshops aimed at introducing the peoples of these indigenous communities to each other and the broader public to share about their cultural practices and struggles. During the press conference for Indigenous Celebration 2018, that took place at Kubu Kopi on Monday (May 7th), organisers and some of the participating artists explained how this unique event took form and some of the impacts they hope it will have. Emmanuel Sinta from the Dayak people of Kalimantan explained that her organization Banu Welum who are co-organizers of the event, advocate for cultural pride amongst Dayak youth through the use of media such as film and magazines in which they tell stories about themselves that are covered in the mainstream media.

Focusing on art and culture as a way to encourage young people to have a sense of dignity related to their ancestral culture, Banu Welum are also working in cooperation with greening projects including planting 500 tree per hectare on a plot of 8 hectares in the district of Gunung Mas which has been deforested by mining. For every Indigenous Celebration ticket sold, 1 tree will be planted there. Their aim is to eventually create a permaculture center there to help deal with economic issues in the area. As Sinta explained: “there is a lot of appreciation for the art and visual cultures of indigenous people, in Indonesia and around the world, but there are also alot of struggles including human rights issues, these issues need to be addressed - not just by elders and NGO;s but also by the youth of affected communities”. Professional photographer and adventurer, New Zealand born David Metcalf was inspired to create this event out of a desire to bring different indigenous groups together. Through extensive travels through

the world, he noticed that many indigenous peoples know very little about other indigenous communities from other countries and by coming together in celebration, he hopes will allow them to share their struggles, create networks, promote the preservation of their lands and wisdom and generally grow a stronger appreciation for thier own value as guardians of the earth. Event organizer Bli Anom from Antida records Denpasar, said that he was quite overwhelmed by the scope of Indigenous Celebration which is the first time that peoples of the South Pacific and Polynesia have come together on this scale - especially as they only had three months to put the whole thing together with very little sponsorship. Major Israeli raids hit ‘Iranian’ targets in Syria after rocket fire

JERUSALEM - Israel’s army said Thursday it had carried out widespread raids against Iranian targets in Syria overnight after rocket fire towards its forces which it blamed on Iran, marking a sharp escalation between the two enemies. The incident came after weeks of rising tensions and followed US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from a key 2015 Iran nuclear deal on Tuesday, a move Israel had long advocated. The raids were one of the largest Israeli military operations in recent

years and the biggest such assault on Iranian targets, the military said. “We hit nearly all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria,” Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told a security conference on Thursday morning. “They need to remember the

I hope we’ve finished this episode and everyone understood.” Israel carried out the raids after it said around 20 rockets, either Fajr or Grad type, were fired from Syria at its forces in the occupied Golan Heights at around midnight. It alleged the rockets followed a “first Israeli bombardment on the town of Baath” in Quneitra province. SHANGHAI - A Chinese court jailed the former high-flying head of troubled Anbang Insurance Group for 18 years on Thursday for defrauding the company of more than $10 billion. Wu Xiaohui was toppled as Anbang’s head last year and China’s insurance regulator announced an unprecedented takeover of the conglomerate in February, as the government moves to prevent heavily-indebted large private companies from collapsing and posing a risk to the financial system. Established in 2004, Anbang grew rapidly into a financial-services powerhouse, making waves in 2014 by buying New York’s landmark Waldorf Astoria hotel for $1.95 billion and other acquisitions. In addition to the prison sentence, the Shanghai Municipal

No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court announced that it had ordered the seizure of 10.5 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) worth of his property and the suspension of his political rights for four years. The court found him guilty of defrauding Anbang of more than 65 billion yuan following a trial in March. The funds were transferred to companies that Wu personally controlled to repay debts or for “personal expenditures”, the judges said. JAKARTA - Efforts to improve security of Komodo National Park tourist area in West Manggarai District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, will continue to be made to address the issues of poaching, illegal fishing, and waste management. In a bid to maintain security at Komodo National Park, the Directorate General of Law Enforcement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will soon establish a security post in the region. The national park is home to some of the world`s largest Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis), but they are under threat and defined as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Hence, the security post, which is targeted to be completed before the International Monetary Fund - World Bank (IMF-WB) annual meeting in Bali in October 2018, will be established around the Komodo National Park. The post, according to the park office chief Budi Setiawan, will step up security to prevent animal poaching activities within and around the national tourism spot. The establishment of the security post is also part of the synergy of the Komodo National Park Office regarding the security scheme and the rebuilding of intelligence functions. Following the establishment of the security post, the Directorate General of Law Enforcement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will provide a speedboat to monitor illegal fishing activities in the waters around Komodo Island. The support in the form of protection activities, security, and handling of waste in the tourist area, known as the habitat of ancient Komodo dragons, will also continue to be improved. The

Komodo National Park is a popular tourist destination, and therefore, the lawlessness, waste, and poaching activities have become negative issues that discourage tourists. Hence, the security of the park, as one of the seven wonders of the world (new 7 wonders), remains a top priority. So far, continuous integrated float patrols, involving the Navy and Water Police in West Manggarai, have been continuously conducted. These routine patrols are carried out in water and land that are prone to disturbances such as illegal harvesting of seafood, illegal hunting, or disruption by visitors` activities. Regarding offering security to tourism boats, some 10 boat mooring facilities have been built to offer docking facilities, with five of them around the Pink Beach area, and the others spread around various points of interest. The mooring facilities were built so that boats carrying tourists, keen on conducting surfing and diving activities, would not anchor recklessly. Security around the Komodo National Park will continue to be optimized, so that the worldfamous Komodo Island and its surrounding natural beauty would be preserved and would make tourists feel safe and comfortable. In 2017, more than 120 thousand tourists, comprising 65 percent foreign holidaymakers, had visited Komodo Island. In addition, serious efforts must also be taken to overcome the problem of waste at the Komodo National Park, after complaints from foreign tourists. The tourists stated that based on their experience of diving in the waters of the Komodo National Park in the previous years, they have found the current situation to be bad due to pollution by waste. School’s out for Asian Games in Indonesia

Jakarta will close schools across the city during the Asian Games, organisers said Wednesday, in a bid to clear streets of notorious traffic congestion that threatens to create travel chaos. With just over three months to go until the showpiece event, Games organisers have been looking at ways to tackle the Indonesian capital’s traffic snarls. It was not immediately clear how many schools would be closed during the August 18-September 2 event, which will see 15,000 athletes and hordes of spectators coming to Jakarta and co-host Palembang on Sumatra island. Taking pupils out of their daily ride to and from school is expected to reduce traffic by about 20 percent, organisers said. But primary and secondary students delighted by a free pass to skip school will find some strings attached -- they’ll be required to write papers about the event at home, or possibly help out as volunteers at the second-biggest multi-sport event behind the Olympics.

“This is an opportunity for us ... to get the younger generation involved in the Asian Games and it will reduce the traffic by nearly 20 percent,” Games chief organiser Erick Thohir told an organising committee meeting on Wednesday. Organisers plan to create dedicated lanes for athletes and officials to ensure they reach events on time. Jakarta may also expand an existing odd-even licence plate system to keep a lid on traffic, Thohir added. The moves are expected to help cut drive times between an athlete village in North Jakarta and the main sporting venue in central Senayan district to 30 minutes from the current trip of almost two hours. The closure could help reduce choking smog -much of it from vehicle exhaust -- that can envelop Jakarta, a city of some 10 million. But not everyone thinks closing schools is the best way to ease congestion. “There are other problems in the city such as street food vendors who sell on the roads or construction projects which hinder people’s mobility,” transportation analyst Danang Parikesit told AFP earlier. Scientists say Chinese-backed dam risks orangutan habitat

JAKARTA - Scientists are calling for cancellation of a Chinesebacked hydroelectric dam in Indonesia that threatens the habitat of a newly discovered orangutan species numbering only 800 animals. In the journal Current Biology, the experts say the 510-megawatt dam in Sumatra will flood or otherwise alter part of the habitat and likely make it impossible to take a crucial step toward ensuring the species survives — reconnecting fragmented forests the primates are spread across.

China’s state-owned Sinohydro is building the dam, which is reportedly financed by Chinese loans. Critics of the project say it’s part of China’s “Belt and Road” plans to carpet Asia with Chinese-financed infrastructure and extend its economic and political influence. Scientists announced the discovery of the third orangutan species, Pongo tapanuliensis, in November. The population, with frizzier hair and distinctively long calls for the males, was previously

believed to be Sumatran orangutans. Without special protection, it’s in danger of rapid extinction, scientists say. “It’s appalling to think that within our lifetimes, a new great ape species could be both discovered and driven to extinction,” said Serge Wich, a professor at Liverpool John Moores University, who was involved in identifying the new orangutan species. The scientists also urged that the remaining habitat in the Batang Toru forest of northern Sumatra be

given strict conservation protection and that forest corridors be created to link separated populations. One way to do that, they said, is to close a section of the road between two main forest fragments. The Batang Toru orangutan was the first great ape species to be proposed by scientists in nearly 90 years. Previously, science has recognized six great ape species: Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, eastern and western gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. The International Union for

Conservation of Nature classified Bornean orangutans as critically endangered in 2016 due to a precipitous population decline caused by destruction of their forest habitat for palm oil and pulp wood plantations. Sumatran orangutans have been classified as critically endangered since 2008. The scientists writing in Current Biology said orangutan subpopulations need to number at least 200 to have a chance of surviving a century and more than 500 for longer-term survival. (ap)

Taman Festival Bali Ghost Town DENPASAR - Taman Festival Bali Ghost Town is an abandoned amusement park at Padanggalak Beach, north of the Sanur main hub. The site is often referred to as one of Bali’s very few ‘ghost towns’. Being located on a remote coast that’s far away from the main Sanur crowds adds to its eeriness. The locals believe long-abandoned sites like this become ‘occupied’ by lost spirits. One thing is for sure, extra care must be taken around these gradually failing structures. Nevertheless,

the Taman Festival Bali ghost town is a favourite location for photographers looking for a desolate or ominous setting. You can explore more of its front and central grounds. There’s a Turbo Theatre and several dining outlets with crumbling walls covered in graffiti art, dust, and moss. Large statues and ornamental figures around the courtyards and throughout its open spaces now stand under dense vines and foliage. Most of the grounds are reachable by foot. However, a network of dirt trails wind throughout the rear grounds, which are better explored by motorbike. Like the main grounds, extra caution must be taken when wandering these quieter areas. Former world number one Sharapova fired 30 winners and nine aces in her victory which gave her a last-eight clash with Dutch player Kiki Bertens who knocked out world number two Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-2. Spain will practise with VAR before World Cup - Lopetegui

Spain players are doing their homework on Video Assistant Referees (VAR) and will know the system inside-out at the World Cup, according to the national team coach Julen Lopetegui. This summer’s football showpiece in Russia will be the first of its kind to use video techonology, with referees able to consult on decisions relating to goals, penalties, red cards and cases of mistaken identity.

VAR was introduced in the top divisions in Germany and Italy this term, as well as selected matches in England’s domestic cups, but Spanish football has been slower on the uptake. Guardiola, Pochettino ‘happy’ Ferguson is out of intensive care Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino said they were delighted that former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is out of intensive care following surgery on a brain haemorrhage.

United announced on Wednesday that Ferguson no longer needed intensive care following his emergency operation at the weekend and would continue rehabilitation as an inpatent.

“His family have been overwhelmed by the level of support and good wishes but continue to request privacy as this will be vital during this next stage of recovery,” said a statement from the club.

the Taman Festival Bali ghost town is a favourite location for photographers looking for a desolate or ominous setting. You can explore more of its front and central grounds. There’s a Turbo Theatre and several dining outlets with crumbling walls covered in graffiti art, dust, and moss. Large statues and ornamental figures around the courtyards and throughout its open spaces now stand under dense vines and foliage. Most of the grounds are reachable by foot. However, a network of dirt trails wind throughout the rear grounds, which are better explored by motorbike. Like the main grounds, extra caution must be taken when wandering these quieter areas. First ever Indigenous Celebration of its kind in Indonesia

Bali hosts 180 elders and youth from 7 different countries

Indigenous Celebration is a monumental event that will be taking place at Arma Museum and Resort , Ubud from May 11-13 featuring over 180 indigenous representatives - young and old from 7 different countries, including many from different parts of Indonesia as well as elder wisdom keepers who seldom leave their remote villages. Although there will be dance and music performances every night of the celebration this gathering is intended to be far more than a presentation of tribal dances. Over the course of the three day event, there will be exhibitions, booths and cultural art workshops aimed at introducing the peoples of these indigenous communities to each other and the broader public to share about their cultural practices and struggles. During the press conference for Indigenous Celebration 2018, that took place at Kubu Kopi on Monday (May 7th), organisers and some of the participating artists explained how this unique event took form and some of the impacts they hope it will have. Emmanuel Sinta from the Dayak people of Kalimantan explained that her organization Banu Welum who are co-organizers of the event, advocate for cultural pride amongst Dayak youth through the use of media such as film and magazines in which they tell stories about themselves that are covered in the mainstream media.

Focusing on art and culture as a way to encourage young people to have a sense of dignity related to their ancestral culture, Banu Welum are also working in cooperation with greening projects including planting 500 tree per hectare on a plot of 8 hectares in the district of Gunung Mas which has been deforested by mining. For every Indigenous Celebration ticket sold, 1 tree will be planted there. Their aim is to eventually create a permaculture center there to help deal with economic issues in the area. As Sinta explained: “there is a lot of appreciation for the art and visual cultures of indigenous people, in Indonesia and around the world, but there are also alot of struggles including human rights issues, these issues need to be addressed - not just by elders and NGO;s but also by the youth of affected communities”. Professional photographer and adventurer, New Zealand born David Metcalf was inspired to create this event out of a desire to bring different indigenous groups together. Through extensive travels through

the world, he noticed that many indigenous peoples know very little about other indigenous communities from other countries and by coming together in celebration, he hopes will allow them to share their struggles, create networks, promote the preservation of their lands and wisdom and generally grow a stronger appreciation for thier own value as guardians of the earth. Event organizer Bli Anom from Antida records Denpasar, said that he was quite overwhelmed by the scope of Indigenous Celebration which is the first time that peoples of the South Pacific and Polynesia have come together on this scale - especially as they only had three months to put the whole thing together with very little sponsorship. JERUSALEM - Israel’s army said Thursday it had carried out widespread raids against Iranian targets in Syria overnight after rocket fire towards its forces which it blamed on Iran, marking a sharp escalation between the two enemies. The incident came after weeks of rising tensions and followed US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from a key 2015 Iran nuclear deal on Tuesday, a move Israel had long advocated. The raids were one of the largest Israeli military operations in recent

years and the biggest such assault on Iranian targets, the military said. “We hit nearly all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria,” Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman told a security conference on Thursday morning. “They need to remember the

It alleged the rockets followed a “first Israeli bombardment on the town of Baath” in Quneitra province. Established in 2004, Anbang grew rapidly into a financial-services powerhouse, making waves in 2014 by buying New York’s landmark Waldorf Astoria hotel for $1.95 billion and other acquisitions. JAKARTA - Efforts to improve security of Komodo National Park tourist area in West Manggarai District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, will continue to be made to address the issues of poaching, illegal fishing, and waste management. In a bid to maintain security at Komodo National Park, the Directorate General of Law Enforcement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will soon establish a security post in the region. The national park is home to some of the world`s largest Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis), but they are under threat and defined as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Hence, the security post, which is targeted to be completed before the International Monetary Fund - World Bank (IMF-WB) annual meeting in Bali in October 2018, will be established around the Komodo National Park. The post, according to the park office chief Budi Setiawan, will step up security to prevent animal poaching activities within and around the national tourism spot. The establishment of the security post is also part of the synergy of the Komodo National Park Office regarding the security scheme and the rebuilding of intelligence functions. Following the establishment of the security post, the Directorate General of Law Enforcement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will provide a speedboat to monitor illegal fishing activities in the waters around Komodo Island. The support in the form of protection activities, security, and handling of waste in the tourist area, known as the habitat of ancient Komodo dragons, will also continue to be improved. The

Komodo National Park is a popular tourist destination, and therefore, the lawlessness, waste, and poaching activities have become negative issues that discourage tourists. Hence, the security of the park, as one of the seven wonders of the world (new 7 wonders), remains a top priority. So far, continuous integrated float patrols, involving the Navy and Water Police in West Manggarai, have been continuously conducted. These routine patrols are carried out in water and land that are prone to disturbances such as illegal harvesting of seafood, illegal hunting, or disruption by visitors` activities. Regarding offering security to tourism boats, some 10 boat mooring facilities have been built to offer docking facilities, with five of them around the Pink Beach area, and the others spread around various points of interest. The mooring facilities were built so that boats carrying tourists, keen on conducting surfing and diving activities, would not anchor recklessly. Security around the Komodo National Park will continue to be optimized, so that the worldfamous Komodo Island and its surrounding natural beauty would be preserved and would make tourists feel safe and comfortable. In 2017, more than 120 thousand tourists, comprising 65 percent foreign holidaymakers, had visited Komodo Island. In addition, serious efforts must also be taken to overcome the problem of waste at the Komodo National Park, after complaints from foreign tourists. The tourists stated that based on their experience of diving in the waters of the Komodo National Park in the previous years, they have found the current situation to be bad due to pollution by waste. Jakarta will close schools across the city during the Asian Games, organisers said Wednesday, in a bid to clear streets of notorious traffic congestion that threatens to create travel chaos. With just over three months to go until the showpiece event, Games organisers have been looking at ways to tackle the Indonesian capital’s traffic snarls. It was not immediately clear how many schools would be closed during the August 18-September 2 event, which will see 15,000 athletes and hordes of spectators coming to Jakarta and co-host Palembang on Sumatra island. Taking pupils out of their daily ride to and from school is expected to reduce traffic by about 20 percent, organisers said. But primary and secondary students delighted by a free pass to skip school will find some strings attached -- they’ll be required to write papers about the event at home, or possibly help out as volunteers at the second-biggest multi-sport event behind the Olympics.

“This is an opportunity for us ... to get the younger generation involved in the Asian Games and it will reduce the traffic by nearly 20 percent,” Games chief organiser Erick Thohir told an organising committee meeting on Wednesday. Organisers plan to create dedicated lanes for athletes and officials to ensure they reach events on time. Jakarta may also expand an existing odd-even licence plate system to keep a lid on traffic, Thohir added. The moves are expected to help cut drive times between an athlete village in North Jakarta and the main sporting venue in central Senayan district to 30 minutes from the current trip of almost two hours. The closure could help reduce choking smog -much of it from vehicle exhaust -- that can envelop Jakarta, a city of some 10 million. But not everyone thinks closing schools is the best way to ease congestion. “There are other problems in the city such as street food vendors who sell on the roads or construction projects which hinder people’s mobility,” transportation analyst Danang Parikesit told AFP earlier. Scientists say Chinese-backed dam risks orangutan habitat

JAKARTA - Scientists are calling for cancellation of a Chinesebacked hydroelectric dam in Indonesia that threatens the habitat of a newly discovered orangutan species numbering only 800 animals. In the journal Current Biology, the experts say the 510-megawatt dam in Sumatra will flood or otherwise alter part of the habitat and likely make it impossible to take a crucial step toward ensuring the species survives — reconnecting fragmented forests the primates are spread across.

China’s state-owned Sinohydro is building the dam, which is reportedly financed by Chinese loans. Critics of the project say it’s part of China’s “Belt and Road” plans to carpet Asia with Chinese-financed infrastructure and extend its economic and political influence. Scientists announced the discovery of the third orangutan species, Pongo tapanuliensis, in November. The population, with frizzier hair and distinctively long calls for the males, was previously

believed to be Sumatran orangutans. Without special protection, it’s in danger of rapid extinction, scientists say. “It’s appalling to think that within our lifetimes, a new great ape species could be both discovered and driven to extinction,” said Serge Wich, a professor at Liverpool John Moores University, who was involved in identifying the new orangutan species. The scientists also urged that the remaining habitat in the Batang Toru forest of northern Sumatra be

given strict conservation protection and that forest corridors be created to link separated populations. One way to do that, they said, is to close a section of the road between two main forest fragments. The Batang Toru orangutan was the first great ape species to be proposed by scientists in nearly 90 years. Previously, science has recognized six great ape species: Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, eastern and western gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. The International Union for

Conservation of Nature classified Bornean orangutans as critically endangered in 2016 due to a precipitous population decline caused by destruction of their forest habitat for palm oil and pulp wood plantations. Sumatran orangutans have been classified as critically endangered since 2008. The scientists writing in Current Biology said orangutan subpopulations need to number at least 200 to have a chance of surviving a century and more than 500 for longer-term survival. (ap)

NEGARA - A number of villages in Jembrana have recently developed rural tourism by utilizing their natural landscape. One thing that can help popularize these new attractions is social media. For instance, it has been experienced by JR Pancaseming Peak, Puncak Mawar or Rose Peak at Dewasana and Green Cliff at Yehembang Kangin village. One of the locations having a hilly landscape is the Puncak Mawar Hill at Dewasana hamlet, Pendem, Jembrana. Spot of the rural tourism located in the hills of Dewasana offers natural view contemporarily beautified. Initially, the area remaining beautiful and cool was difficult to be reached by community. Only a few people could climb to such a precipitous location. However, gradually the area on the hillside is arranged by the community and worth visiting. The name of Bukit Mawar itself does not refer to presence of many roses at this time. Rather it originated from the name of the landowner under the location familiarly known as Mr. Mawar. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s veteran ex-leader Mahathir Mohamad, 92, won a historic election victory Thursday, in a political earthquake that toppled the country’s scandal-plagued premier and ousted a regime that had ruled for over six decades. In a stunning political upset that took pundits by surprise, Mahathir’s opposition alliance ended the long hold on power of the Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been in power in Malaysia since its birth as an independent country in 1957. The thumping victory capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years and came out of retirement to take on Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.

When he takes power, Mahathir will be the oldest prime minister in the world. Despite the shock result there were no reports of trouble on the streets, where pockets of celebration erupted overnight. A flag-waving crowd of supporters gathered on a field outside the headquarters of Mahathir’s party near Kuala Lumpur. Suva Selvan, a 48-year-old doctor, said he felt the country had just won its independence. “I feel that with this change we probably can see something better

in the future... our hope for the future is a better government, fair, free and united,” he told AFP. Defeat could just be the beginning of Najib’s troubles. Mahathir has vowed to bring him to justice over allegations that billions of dollars were looted from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, which the scandal-hit leader set up and oversaw. Lightning strikes kill dozens across Bangladesh

DHAKA - Dozens of Bangladeshis were killed in lightning strikes as pre-monsoon thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the South Asian country, an official said Thursday. Farmers harvesting rice in open fields made up the majority of victims, Iftekharul Islam, a director at Bangladesh’s disaster management department, told AFP.

“In the last 24 hours, 29 people have died from lightning in 12 districts. Almost all of them are farmers,” he said. Scores of people die every year after being struck by lightning during Bangladesh’s wet season, which runs from April to October, but officials say the numbers are exceptionally high this year. Islam said that more than 112

people had been killed in strikes in the first 10 days of May. “Every day 10-12 people are dying from lightning,” he explained, adding that it was instilling fear in farmers who harvest rice during this time of the year. Authorities declared lightning a natural disaster after 82 people were killed in a single day in May 2016.

Independent monitors estimated that some 349 Bangladeshis died from lightning that year. Experts say deaths are rising as Bangladesh, one of the world’s poorest nations, witnesses the increased deforestation of rural areas. Farmers are known to chop down trees to free up space to grow more rice. Disaster management officials

are trying to reduce the high death toll by planting five million palm trees to provide better shelter. “We have already planted 3.8 million palm trees. Kurma Asih turtle conservation group at Perancak village, Jembrana, is one of the conservation groups having tried the concept of ecotourism. Compared to similar conservation groups in other districts, the location is further away from tourism center. Actually, Perancak is the location of the largest turtle nest in Bali. In order to support the conservation concept, it needs synergy with the community. The ecotourism applied at Perancak village is trying to develop conservation with a slightly different approach. It implements the conservation- and community-based ecotourism development. Local people are involved to gain economic benefits. On that account, it can reduce the exploitation of turtles in this region. A turtle conservationist at Perancak, I Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, said the conservation effort is expected to be coupled with ecotourism to improve the economy of local community. “So, it can provide an alternative income for fishermen to create homestay for researchers and volunteers from various countries, not just from the results of fish catch. With this effort, it does not empower the Kurma Asih but the community of Perancak village in general,” he explained. The group ever won the Kalpataru for the category of environmental conservation in 2017. This group has started to preserve turtles since June 11, 1997. It was commenced with the breeding and educating the community. After that it could embrace fishermen that previously hunted turtles, but now save turtles. Until these days, the group has collected 17,000 turtle eggs. After being hatched, the hatchlings will be instantly released together with the community, students and institutions as a tourist attraction. (olo)

Bali’s economy grows 5.68 percent

Gap remains wide between urban and rural areas

DENPASAR - Bali’s economy is slowly recovering. In the first quarter of 2018, Bali’s economy grew 5.68 percent compared to the first quarter of 2017. Compared to the fourth quarter in 2017, Bali’s economy only grew 0.09 percent. Head of the Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, said the 5.68-percent growth can be said to be good when compared to the fourth quarter of 2017. However, if compared to the first quarter of 2017, the growth in the first quarter of 2018 reaching 5.68 percent is not very encouraging as Bali’s economy grew 6.24 percent in the first quarter of 2017. Similarly, when compared to the first quarter of 2016 it grew 6.03 percent. “This means the growth in the

first quarter of 2018 is not better than what achieved in 2017. However, this 5.68-percent figure also indicates a good recovery situation after the eruption of Mount Agung disaster,” he said Monday (May 7). However, if broken down, the gap between urban and rural areas will be seen. Statistical data revealed by Division Head of Social Statistics of BPS Bali, Asim Saputra, mentioned the highest poverty population occurred in two districts namely Karangasem and Buleleng with respectively 27,023 people and 37,841 people. In percentage, the poor population of Karangasem is 6.55 percent and Buleleng 5.74 percent. Both are rural areas which in fact also belong to agricultural area. Bali’s economy is concentrated in the south. Meanwhile, Northern Bali is largely agricultural and belongs to rural area that should be encouraged to pursue development in the south. “The inequality among the villagers is indeed small, but when compared to urban people, the gap will be seen to increasingly widen,” he said. The imbalance between the city and village makes urbanization in Bali increasingly higher. There is indeed an economic improvement while working in the city but not too significant. “If people can get an economic pie at their village, their economy will also increase. If they work in the city, their

income is deducted with house rental, so the remittent obtained and taken to the village is not much,” he said. According to him, to break the flow of urbanization can be done by advancing the Northern Bali by building infrastructure and simplifying access to Northern Bali. Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Bali, A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said that Bali’s economy is still growing below 5.5 percent. This causes the economic imbalance in Bali. In addition, Bali’s imports are also quite high dominated by tourism needs. Added to the rising insignificant exports, Bali’s economic growth in terms of spending becomes disproportionate between exports and imports. The gap is evident from the high income in Denpasar, Badung and Gianyar categorized to be Southern Bali. The average income in Badung is IDR 36 million per month, Denpasar at IDR 24 million per month and Gianyar at IDR 18 to IDR 20 million per month. Meanwhile, the average income of Northern Bali consisting of Buleleng is IDR 1.6 million per month, Jembrana (IDR 1.9 million), and Bangli (IDR 1.5 million). Therefore, to overcome this gap Alit also agreed with the BPS that the key is infrastructure. With the presence of good infrastructure, investment will also grow in the Northern Bali regions. Mangupura - The government’s plan to reduce congestion around Jimbaran intersection seems to be difficult to achieve. The process of land acquisition around the location has not been resolved. As a result, the Denpasar Metro Road Agency may cancel the plan of road widening project at the Jimbaran intersection. When confirmed on Tuesday (May 8), Commitment Making Officer (PPK) of the National Road Authority (BBPJN) VIII, Nyoman Yasmara, said that the development of Jimbaran intersection project has a letter from Badung district government. Essentially, in accordance with the schedule, the project must

be worked on immediately because it is in the same package as the Ngurah Rai Statue underpass project. They are expected to finish simultaneously in August or September. However, Yasmara said the process of land acquisition around the location has not been resolved. Until now, the land is not ready so his party cannot yet start the workmanship. “If the land still cannot be released, we will reduce the scope of work, in the sense that the contract will be cut or cannot be done because the land is not ready,” he concluded. In relation to the land acquisition process, some landholders are still reluctant to release their land be-

A hostage crisis involving Islamist prisoners at a high-security jail outside Jakarta has been resolved nearly two days after a deadly riot broke out at the prison, Indonesian officials said Thursday. Hundreds of police and armoured vehicles were deployed to rescue a police officer taken hostage by inmates after chaos erupted late Tuesday at the facility inside the Mobile Police Brigade headquarters in Depok, leaving five officers and an inmate dead. In the pre-dawn operation, 145 prisoners “surrendered unconditionally” and the hostage was released with no further casualties reported, said Chief Security Minister Wiranto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. OSLO - Streaming numbers of Beyonce and Kanye West’s respective albums on rap mogul Jay Z’s music platform Tidal have been manipulated, allowing the stars excessive royalty payouts, a Norwegian newspaper said on Wednesday. In its investigative report, the financial daily Dagens Naeringsliv (DN) claimed the streaming numbers for Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo” and Beyonce’s “Lemonade” were inflated through manipulated user play counts on Tidal. Jay Z bought the online service, which has its roots and significant activities in Oslo, through his holding Project Panther for $56 million in March 2015. His wife Beyonce and his former protege West both launched their albums exclusively on the streaming platform in 2016. DN’s revelations suggest that West and Beyonce, along with their record companies, received a disproportionate share of royalty payouts at the expense of other artists on Tidal. This could put the service in a tricky situation, as it has promised to pay rights holders more money than its other streaming rivals including Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer.

Based on an analysis provided by the Norwegian Center for Cyber and Information Security (CCIS), DN reported more than 320 million false plays of songs from the two albums over short periods, a manipulation which affected more than 1.7 million users. User accounts and play counts obtained by the newspaper revealed suspicious listening patterns, such as simultaneous playbacks of multiple songs by the same user or repeated playbacks of the same song at regular intervals.
