BERLIN — Actor Shia LaBeouf hit the Berlin Film Festival in memorable style Sunday, first walking out of a press conference for the film “Nymphomaniac Volume I” and then wearing a paper bag over his head at the red carpet premiere. The actor posed for photographers in a stylish tuxedo — and a paper bag with eyeholes and the words “I am not famous anymore” written across it. LaBeouf has frequently used the statement on his Twitter page, and he was identifiable by a tattoo on his hand.
The unconventional attire came shortly after the star walked out of a press conference with co-stars Uma Thurman and Christian Slater to promote Lars von Trier’s film, the first installment of a two-part drama about a woman’s sexual life from girlhood to age 50. A reporter’s question as to whether the actors were worried about the film’s sex scenes elicited the response: “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. NEW YORK — “The Lego Movie” clicked with moviegoers, assembling an exceptional $69.1 million debut at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates. The better-than-expected result made the Warner Bros. collaboration with the Danish toy company easily the biggest hit of the year so far. A sequel is already in development for the 3-D animated film, digitally drawn to mimic a world composed entirely of Lego bricks. The film has drawn raves from critics. Co-directors and co-writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“21 Jump Street,” ‘’Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”) gave the film a playful tone to capture the whimsy of a child playing in a box of Legos. Characters are largely voiced by comic actors like Chris Pratt and Will Ferrell. The film marks the biggest animation hit for Warner Bros., a studio that despite popular live-action franchises has struggled to develop animated hits on par
with other studios. “I can’t imagine this not turning into a long-term franchise,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “This is such a runaway success that Warner Bros is now a major player in the animated genre.” Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., said the film, made with a production budget of $60 million, resounded because of the popularity of the Lego brand. KEROBOKAN - Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby, her face veiled against a horde of press photographers, was hustled out of prison Monday to start the next chapter of her troubled life after more than nine years behind bars in Bali. Corby, whose case has drawn huge fascination in Australia since she was caught entering Bali in
2004 with marijuana stashed in her surfing gear, sped off to complete final administrative steps for her release, with journalists giving chase. After visiting government officials who will oversee her parole in Indonesia -- where she must remain until 2017 -- she was whisked away by a black SUV to a luxury resort and spa in the popular Seminyak

MANGUPURA - The growth of modern markets in Bali continues to eat away at traditional markets. Government as regulator must support the existence of traditional markets by strengthening them with favoring policies. Secretary of the Indonesian Economists Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. I.B. Raka Suardana, said that modern market should pay attention to the existence of traditional markets, so it would not shut off the traditional markets. “Traditional market must be grown, developed and reinforced by favoring policies of the government, especially in terms of regulation,” said Raka Suardana, Saturday (Feb 8). According to him, traditional markets should also make improvement in line with the demands of today’s consumers accentuating services, comfort, sanitation, safety and satisfaction. Thus, the behavior of traders in traditional markets should also be changed. Besides, the modern store should also pay attention to the existing regulations, especially the chained modern stores, so as not to aggressively open
more outlets to remote villages that could shut off stalls or shops owned by local communities. “The players of traditional stalls or shops should also improve, at least can make their stall or shop worth visiting by today’s modern consumers, especially in terms of services and the comfort must be considered,” he explained. He said the weakness of traditional stall or shop lay in the matter of sanitation and comfort. This deficiency should be improved in order to provide convenience for consumers. “The government, both county and municipal government, must be more selective in issuing permit to modern markets and modern stores. The distance between the modern market and modern store should consider the existence of traditional markets or stores,” he said.
He argued that establishment of the modern market or modern stores should make partnership with the players of local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and have CSR programs. It could be done by marketing the SME products such as packaging or repackaging the products with the brand of modern stores or another brand having been agreed in order to increase the selling value of the products. Besides, the marketing the SME products could also be made through the storefront or outlet of modern store. “Modern stores can also provide business space in the area of modern markets or modern stores for small businesses with rental price in accordance with the capability of the small businesses or which can be used by small business through other cooperation in the form of partnerships,” he said. SEMARAPURA - Heavy rain for two hours resulted in flooding in the Semarapura town, Klungkung, Sunday (Feb 9). The rain accompanied with strong winds and flashes of lightning caused the culvert to clog. As a result, a number of lines in the Semarapura town were hit by floods. One of them was at the four-way intersection. This icon of the Klungkung town was besieged by floods from three directions as high as adult thigh. Heavy rains in Klungkung began around two o’clock in the afternoon. Flush of the rain for two hours caused large enough floodwater from the north, right from Jalan Gajah Mada. Apparently, the culvert along the road was clogged. Thus, the rainwater directly besieged the four-way intersection on Jalan Gajah Mada. At the location, the floodwater also flowed to Jalan Diponegoro eastward, Jalan Puputan southward and Jalan Untung Surapati westward. Floods at the four-way intersection were getting severe after the coming of floods from the opposite direction on Jalan Diponegoro and Jalan Untung Surapati. Thus, the four-way intersection was completely surrounded by floods. By degrees, the flood leading to Jalan Puputan westward receded. A number of road users were trapped in the middle of flood, precisely at point of four-way intersection. Even, vehicles such as cars and motorcycles broke down in the middle of the flood. Meanwhile, other motorists seemed to turn round after seeing the path in front of them was surrounded by floods. Meanwhile, the rain at that time was still very heavy. “The flood is quite large. Rather than being trapped in flood and breaks down, I prefer to turn round to other line,” said one of the residents, Wayan Nata, Sunday. Until 4:30 in the afternoon, the flood at the four-way intersection was not secure enough to be passed through by vehicles. Though having receded, the floodwater on Jalan Puputan remained quite high. Even, the next heavy rain flushed Klungkung at 4:45 p.m. Thus, both cars and motorcycles coming from the four-way intersection ultimately turned round. Similarly, the flooding also caused vehicles on the road to jam for four hours. However, the vehicles could begin to move at late afternoon. Unsurprisingly, the flood also drew the attention of local residents. One of them was Gede Sarjana where he said the flood at the intersection very rarely happened. “This severe flood is for the first time. Apparently, the culvert in the north is blocked. Moreover, the culvert was never maintained. Due to clogged culvert, a number of sidewalk parts exploded. So far, it has not been repaired,” he said. Other than the intersection, the Semarapura Market was also besieged by floods. For instance, the Block D was hit by floods and receded slowly around 5:10 p.m. Another resident, Wayan Putra, said the other path in the Semarapura town was also besieged by floods. For instance, it happened on the five-way intersection leading to Jalan Flamboyan, Jalan Ngurah Rai, Jalan Surapati and Pegending village. However, the floods at these areas were not as severe as at the four-way intersection. Puddles were also seen on Jalan Kecubung. Seeing this phenomenon, every culvert needed to be checked and repaired. Allegedly, a number of culverts in the Semarapura town had been clogged by rubbish. “When it rained heavily like this, we just knew if the culvert has been filled by rubbish,” said Wayan Putra. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Natural History Museum archaeologist Chris Stringer said that 800,000 or 900,000 years ago Britain was “the edge of the inhabited world.” “This makes us rethink our feelings about the capacity of these early people, that they were coping with conditions somewhat colder than the present day,” he said.

Archaeologists announced Friday that they have discovered human footprints in England that are between 800,000 and 1 million years old — the most ancient found outside Africa, and the earliest evidence of human life in northern Europe. A team from the British Museum, London’s Natural History Museum and Queen Mary college at the University of London uncovered imprints from up to five individuals in ancient estuary mud at Happisburgh on the country’s eastern coast. BOSTON — It was April 1956, and the No. 1 song was Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” At the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, scientist Dean Bumpus was busy releasing glass bottles into the Atlantic Ocean as part of his work to track currents. Nearly 58 years later, a biologist studying grey seals off Nova Scotia found one of the bottles in a pile of debris on a beach. “It was almost like finding treasure in a way,” Warren Joyce said Friday. The drift bottle was among thousands dumped in the Atlantic Ocean between 1956 and 1972 as part of Bumpus’ study of surface and bottom currents. About 10 percent of the 300,000 bottles have been found over the years. Joyce found the bottle Jan. 20 on Sable Island, about 185 miles southeast of Halifax. He contacted scientists at Woods Hole and dutifully gave them the time and place information Bumpus had asked for in a postcard inside the bottle. His reward will be exactly what Bumpus promised in 1956 to anyone who returned a bottle: a 50-cent piece. “I didn’t want the reward, but they said they are sending it to me anyway,” Joyce said, chuckling. Joyce said the bottle had been sandblasted over about 75 percent of its surface. He could still read the words, “Break This Bottle,” so he did. Inside, there was a note from Bumpus explaining that the bottle was among many being released to study the ocean.

“We have held a meeting with hundreds of hoteliers and restaurateurs located on Kuta Beach in Kuta subdistrict head office, Thursday (Feb 6). No doubt all the economic, cultural, social and environmental activities were driven by the presence of tourism. “Tourism is defined as an activity for fun or to get a delight or better live, done in free time or vacation, done with spending money, and get out of the area where people live or there is removal. If any of these activities are not met then the activity cannot be
categorized into tourism activities,” she added. Tourism, said the lecturer of the Bali Tourism Institute (STP Nusa Dua), had an impact as described above. If it was related to tourism, then the presence of congestion could affect the tourism activities. Such condition would have an impact in the whole and could directly affect the revenue of all related sectors of the industry. “For example, the impact of traffic congestion is that tour guides are unable to set the time of their trip schedule, tour package sales will get disturbed and fun activities will be disrupted. In addition, the flow of tourist money that should be spent to shop, eat, buy a souvenir and enjoy attractions will be delayed and even canceled. Consequently, travelers will get irritated and complain. This can lead to poor destination image,” said Eka. In order to remain to become a preferred destination, according to associate professor of the STP Nusa Dua, Bali should at least focus on destination competitiveness index factor. Bali should also focus on creating a transportation system complying with the requirements and creating comfort, security, value for money destination, satisfaction and a positive image for travelers. MANGUPURA - Badung government will establish a sustainable farmland with total area of 17,223 hectares. This acreage is less than the previous estimation namely at least 18,000 hectares. Of the six subdistricts in Badung, it is only Kuta having no sustainable farmland. The Head of Badung Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency, IGAK Sudaratmaja, said the sustainable farmland would set forth in the Detail Spatial Plan (RDTR) of each subdistrict. The current acreage of farmland had been socialized with the RDTR to each subdistrict. He said that among the six subdistricts in Badung, only Kuta subdistrict that did not have a sustainable farmland. It happened because the development in this subdistrict was very crowded. Thus, it left no productive farmland. Meanwhile, related to the total area of sustainable farmland, Sudaratmaja admitted there was a change from the previously estimated amount. Current farmland conversion reaching hundreds of hectares was difficult to be prevented due to a variety of reasons and considerations, especially with regard to the infrastructure development. He said the sustainable farmland consisted of wetlands or paddy fields and dry farmlands. Later on, these lands could not be tampered with or converted or they were exclusively intended for farmland. Meanwhile, the paddy field in Badung totally spread across 9,723 hectares. On the other hand, Sudaratmaja also highlighted the problem of farmland conversion in Badung. Decline in the farmland was also one of the causes of the reduced number of farming households (RTP) in Badung. From the results of the Agricultural Census 2013 in Badung, the farming household in Badung decreased by 34.72 percent from the previous census 10 years before (2003). In 2013, the farming household in Badung amounted to 39,975 people, while in 2003 reached 44,773 people. “Other than decline in the farmland, many farmers also switched their profession by looking for other job opportunities to sustain their economy,” he said. To note, approximately at the end of 2013 the Badung government planned to set at least 18,000 hectares of sustainable farmland. Such acreage was predicted to come from the 10,195 hectares of paddy fields and about 8,000 hectares of dry land agriculture. The decrease in the land area at the time was predicted only about 195 hectares. Based on field research, the forest area of Suter village is the most appropriate place for the development of this nature-based tourism because the nature is very supportive and has very strategic location in the proximity to Penelokan tourist attraction. It poses the center of Kintamani tourist attraction. The nature-based tourism will be developed in various types of tourist attraction such as bird park, trekking, jungle trekking, horse riding as well as educational tour and research. In addition, a restaurant will be built on tree top, and the facilities of outbound and hanging house on cliff top. On the contrary, the judges
agreed with the legal counsel of the accused, namely Chris Harno. The accused never committed criminal acts of fraud or embezzlement in the sale of precious stone with the victim witness Patrick Finlay as described in the indictment. Another consideration was that the judges stated the case did not belong to a criminal act but to civil act so he should be acquitted of all charges and lawsuits. When asked for his confirma-
tion, the prosecutor I Nyoman Sucitrawan justified on Sunday (Feb 9) if the accused Barry was acquitted because the judges believed if his case did not belong to criminal law but to civil law. SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has canceled for a second time its invitation for a senior U.S. envoy to visit the country to discuss a long-detained American’s possible release, the State Department said Monday. The cancellation comes only days after detained American missionary Kenneth Bae told a pro-Pyongyang newspaper that he expected to meet this month with the envoy. It signals an apparent protest of upcoming annual military drills between Washington and Seoul and an alleged mobilization of U.S. nuclear-capable B-52 bombers during training near the Korean Peninsula. North Korea calls the planned drills a rehearsal for invasion, a claim the allies deny. The State Department also said in a statement that civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson has offered to travel to North Korea at the request of Bae’s family. The State Department did not elaborate and referred questions to Jackson, whose spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Analysts say North Korea has previously used detained Americans as leverage in its standoff with the U.S. over its nuclear and missile programs; North Korea denies this. Bae has been held in North Korea for 15 months. The North accused him of smuggling in inflammatory literature and trying to establish a base for antigovernment activities at a border city hotel. Bae was quoted last week in an interview with the Japanbased Choson Sinbo newspaper as saying that a Swedish diplomat told him the U.S. envoy on North Korean human rights issues, Bob King, would visit him as early as Monday and no later than the end of the month. Bae said he also heard from the diplomat that the U.S. government had told North Korea that it intends to send the Rev. Jackson, but the North instead allowed King to come to the country, the report said, without elaborating. The U.S. and North Korea, which fought the 1950-53 Korean War, have no diplomatic relations. BANGKOK - More than 1,000 farmers protested outside the Thai government’s temporary headquarters on Monday over the state’s failure to pay for rice bought under a subsidy scheme that the caretaker administration admits it is struggling to fund. The rice programme was a signature policy of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who was swept to power in 2011 with the help of millions of rural votes, but has become one of the biggest threats to her grip on power. The unrest among farmers has opened a new front against Yingluck’s government, which has been facing off against a Bangkok-based protest movement seeking to drive it from office for nearly three months. One of the organisers of those protests was arrested on Monday, the first of the core leaders to be held since the campaign to disrupt normal business in the capital began in November. The protests, which are still blocking parts of Bangkok, have found much of their support from middle-class, urban taxpayers appalled at what they see as corruption and waste in the rice scheme. Tarit Pengdith, head of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), Thailand’s equivalent of the FBI, said protest leader Sonthiyarn Chuenruethai-naitham was being detained by border patrol police on the outskirts of the city. US economy may be stuck in slow lane for long run Associated Press
WASHINGTON — In the 4½ years since the Great Recession ended, millions of Americans who have gone without jobs or raises have found themselves wondering something about the economic recovery: Is this as good as it gets? It increasingly looks that way. Two straight weak job reports have raised doubts about economists’ predictions of breakout growth in 2014. The global economy is showing signs of slowing — again. Manufacturing has slumped. Fewer people are signing contracts to buy homes. Global stock markets have sunk as anxiety has gripped developing nations. Some long-term trends are equally dispiriting. The Congressional Budget Office foresees growth picking up through 2016, only to weaken starting in 2017. By the CBO’s reckon-
ing, the economy will soon slam into a demographic wall: The vast baby boom generation will retire. Their exodus will shrink the share of Americans who are working, which will hamper the economy’s ability to accelerate. At the same time, the government may have to borrow more, raise taxes or cut spending to support Social Security and Medicare for those retirees. Only a few weeks ago, at least the short-term view looked brighter. Entering 2014, many economists predicted growth would top 3 percent for the first time since 2005. That pace would bring the U.S.
economy near its average postWorld War II annual growth rate. Some of the expected improvement would come from the government exerting less drag on the economy this year after having slashed spending and raised taxes in 2013. In addition, steady job gains dating back to 2010 should unleash more consumer spending. Each of the 7.8 million jobs that have been added provided income to someone who previously had little or none. It amounts to “adrenaline” for the economy, said Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist for Northern Trust. And since 70 percent of the economy flows from consumers, their increased spending would be expected to drive stronger hiring and growth. “There is a dividing line between a slow-growth economy that is not satisfactory and above-trend growth
with a tide strong enough to lift all the boats and put people back to work,” said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi. “That number is 3 percent.” The recovery had appeared to achieve a breakthrough in the final quarter of 2013. The economy grew at an annual pace of 3.2 percent last quarter. Leading the upswing was a 3.3 percent surge in the rate of consumer spending, which had been slack for much of the recovery partly because of high debt loads and stagnant pay. Yet for now, winter storms and freezing temperatures, along with struggles in Europe and Asia, have slowed manufacturing and the pace of hiring. Just 113,000 jobs were added in January, the government said Friday. In December, employers had added a puny 75,000. Job creation for the past two months is roughly
half its average for the past two years. A third sluggish jobs report in February would further dim hopes for a breakout year. “Three months in a row would mean the job market is taking a turn for the worst,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for PNC Financial Services. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman have suggested that the economy might be in a semipermanent funk. In November, Summers warned in a speech that the economy is trapped by “secular stagnation.” By that, he meant a prolonged period of weak demand and slow growth. If the United States hasn’t already slipped into that period, the CBO predicts it could over the next four years. That’s when the retirements of baby boomers would start to restrain growth.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported Monday that Zuckerberg’s donation was the largest charitable gift on the public record in 2013 and put the young couple at the top of the magazine’s annual list of 50 most generous Americans in 2013. The top 50 contributors made donations last year totaling $7.7 billion, plus pledges of $2.9 billion. The Chronicle’s editor says the most significant fact from the list was the amount of money coming from living donors, which totaled about the same amount as the two previous years combined. “It’s a sure sign that the economy is getting better and people are getting a lot less cautious,” said Stacy Palmer, Chronicle editor. Some of the nation’s biggest givers do not appear on the 2013 list, not because they stopped being generous, but because their donations in 2013 were counted as pledges in previous years. For example, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, gave their foundation slightly more than $181.3 million last year, but they were paying off a pledge of about $3.3 billion they made in 2004. made large gifts toward previous pledges. It took gifts totaling at least $37.5 million to make the list this year. Forty-two of the top 50 made gifts of $50 million or more. The Knight pledge requires the university match it within the next two years. No. 4 was philanthropist and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, who made gifts totaling $452 million in 2013 to arts, education, environment, public health and other causes. Nineteen people or couples on the list have signed the Giving Pledge, started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in 2010. More than 120 of the world’s wealthiest individuals and families have pledged to give at least half their wealth to charity since the movement began. Avalanche hampers roads access of Tampaksiring-Tegallalang Bali Post
GIANYAR - The rain flushing on Sunday afternoon (Feb 9) caused another avalanche at Tampaksiring region. At this time, the avalanche occurred at the border region between Tampaksiring and Tegallalang (leading to Bayad hamlet, Kedisan village). As a result, the road access connecting two subdistricts was hampered by the avalanche materials. Based on information compiled at the location, the avalanche was said to occur around five o’clock in the afternoon. Around the scene, it rained somewhat heavily. Land condition at roadside turned unstable so that the avalanche was inevitable. A jackfruit tree uprooted as the land was dragged by the avalanche. The entire road body was blocked by avalanche materials and trees. However, such incident did not last long. The quick response team of the Gianyar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) directly came down to location thirty minutes after receiving the information and then made an evacuation. Up to five o’clock in the afternoon, the avalanche could be resolved so that the road access of TampaksiringTegallalang could be back to normal. The Head of BPBD Gianyar, Anak Agung Oka Digjaya, accompanied by his section head Wayan Eka said the team along with a number of equipment was directly deployed to the scene to help residents open the road access. Until the night, the officers were still trying to open the line of Tampaksiring to Bayad hamlet, Kedisan village, Tegallalang subdistrict. In response to the extreme weather happened lately, he expected all people to always improve alertness. Particularly, the Tampaksiring and Tegallalang in the mapping of disaster area was declared prone to avalanche. “We do expect the people to be alert and immediately report in case there is disaster so that we can make any mitigation effort,” he explained. culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous
wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings. His work has helped the writing of Balinese characters in word processing application like Microsoft Word. Shelves with a couple thousand books have been crammed into a hallway of Ukrainian House, an exhibition center and former Lenin museum that protesters took over two weeks ago after attacking it with rocks and firebombs to drive out police who were sheltering there. It’s hardly a model of finicky propriety — no one hushes the patrons, tough young men holding clubs confront unfamiliar people — but for those who come to read, it’s an oasis for the intellect and a break from the tensions of the Maidan, the downtown square that is the center of protests now in their third month. “It’s very important for the Maidan because it’s cool, it’s not extremist, not radical — it’s study: painting, art, different
projects,” said Eugeniy Fedirets, a young IT specialist who was pawing through a box of newly donated books. He was picking out some books on Ukrainian history, which one of the library’s organizers, Andzhelika Zozula, said has been the most popular topic among the 200-500 people who visit every day. The library is an element of the extensive community that has grown up around the protests, including field kitchens, first aid
stations and clothes distribution booths. Zozula said the library’s lending policies are in line with that communitarian spirit, trusting patrons to sign their correct names and rewarding the return of books with a piece of candy. “Libraries in Ukraine usually are very poor,” said volunteer Lilija Shmyhelska. “When we have the opportunity to bring it all together, to create it, we do it and we do it better than the government.”

SINGAPORE — Airbus showed off its new wide-body A350 on Monday ahead of Asia’s biggest airshow, signaling that the jet’s delivery schedule is on track and stepping up its battle with Boeing for the lucrative long-haul market. The European plane-maker gave reporters a look at the twin-engine A350 before it goes on display at the Singapore show starting Tuesday in its first public appearance since its debut flight in June last year. It will also join the show’s flying display. A little more than half of the jet is made of lightweight carbon fiber to make it lighter and more fuel efficient, a key consideration for airlines contending with volatile fuel prices. The A350, which comes in three versions typically carrying 276 to 369 passengers and has a list price ranging from $254.3 million to $332.1 million, will allow Airbus to step up competition in the long-haul market dominated by Boeing’s 777 and 787 jets. Airbus has received 814 orders for the A350 so far, with 30 percent coming from Asian airlines such as Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways and Singapore Airlines. The region is a crucial market for plane makers because its economic growth is driving rapid expansion of jet fleets. Airbus hopes to woo buyers by showing off the plane to trade visitors on the show’s first two days. Visitors won’t see a plane with a completed passenger cabin because it’s still outfitted with monitoring equipment used in ongoing testing. The A350 presents an alternative to Boeing’s 787, which also make extensive use of carbon fiber but suffered from teething problems last year. Lightweight lithium-ion batteries that caught fire on some planes were the highest profile problem. Airbus opted to abandon using the same type of battery on the A350 after the fires forced authorities to ground the 787 fleet for more than a month. “Airbus has learned a lot from the 787 Dreamliner’s unfortunate problems since its launch. This is the plane for the next decade and beyond,” said Shukor Yusof, an airline analyst at Standard & Poor’s. He predicted that Asian and Middle East carriers would place more orders over the next two years because of the plane’s fuel efficiency, advanced design, long range and cheap operating and maintenance costs. “If you’re the CEO of an airline and you’ve seen the problems that airlines have had with their 787s, you’d seriously have to consider the A350.”

Singapore has complained to Indonesia, its third-largest trading partner, about naming the warship “KRI Usman Harun”. Usman Haji Mohamed Ali and Harun Said were executed in Singapore for their role in the March 1965 blast at a downtown office complex which killed three people and injured 33. The attack was part of an effort by then Indonesian president Sukarno to stage an armed confrontation against the newly formed federation of Malaysia,
which included Singapore. Singapore acrimoniously split from Malaysia to become an independent country on August 9, 1965. Total trade between Singapore and Indonesia reached Sg$79.4 billion ($62.6 billion) in 2012. Singapore’s airshow is Asia’s top aerospace and defence gathering and features daily flying displays by military aircraft from several countries including the United States. It runs until Sunday.

The end of her sentence was brought forward to 2016 after she received several remissions for good behaviour, and a five-year cut following an appeal for clemency to the Indonesian president. Her parole bid was a complex, months-long process which repeatedly ran into bureaucratic hurdles. The process sped up in recent weeks when a justice ministry parole board in Jakarta finally heard her case. Her application included letters of support from the Australian government, as well as her family, the head of the Balinese village where she will live and Kerobokan prison.

ROSA KHUTOR - Women ski jumpers will compete in the Olympics for the first time on Tuesday after more than a decade of pleading, fighting, tears and humiliation and while the athletes are happy to make their Games debut in Sochi they say their fight isn’t over yet. The sport favours light jumpers and although women can often leap as far as men, they were excluded on the grounds there were not enough good athletes to ensure a real competition. Jessica Jerome realised in 2002 she was not being allowed to compete and that U.S. skiing authorities had little interest in women’s jumping. Peter Jerome bought a book titled: “Non profits for dummies” and set up a body to raise money and awareness of the sport. “It very quickly turned into other things, like a huge lobbying organisation for inclusion of women in the Olympics,” he told Reuters. The small non-profit is now Women’s Ski Jumping USA, which runs and largely funds the sport. “I didn’t think it would be as costly as it was ... for all the board members in terms of the amount of time and effort and angst and heartache,” said Jerome, who had to fit his work for the body around a career as an airline pilot for Delta.

Women jumpers had petitioned to be included in every Games since Nagano in 1998 but it was not until April 2011 that the International Olympic Committee announced female athletes could compete on the normal hill in Sochi. And the backers of women’s ski jumping were learning that few people seemed to realise or care that female athletes had been excluded. “I definitely had levels of frustration beyond belief. I just couldn’t believe ... that so many people still lived in the Dark Ages,” Jessica’s mother Barb told Reuters. Women eventually gained their own secondtier international competition in 2004 but could not break into the Olympics. Some suspected sexism might be partly responsible and noted comments that International Ski Federation President Gian Franco Kasper made to National Public Radio in 2005. “Don’t forget, it’s like jumping down from, let’s say, about two metres on the ground about a thousand times a year, which seems not to be appropriate for ladies from a medical point of view,” he said. LONDON - Manchester United manager David Moyes was singing from a familiar hymn sheet as he blamed his side’s profligate finishing and failure to kill off the game after a 2-2 home draw against Fulham on Sunday. United enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but could not turn their dominance of the ball into the solid currency of three points and were undone in the 94th minute when Fulham’s Darren Bent grabbed a late leveller. “We deserved to get back in the game and we deserved to win it, but we gave away a diabolical second goal,” Moyes told reporters. “We should have made it 3-1 and it was really disappointing that we didn’t do that. LONDON - Manchester United manager David Moyes was singing from a familiar hymn sheet as he blamed his side’s profligate finishing and failure to kill off the game after a 2-2 home draw against Fulham on Sunday. United enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but could not turn their dominance of the ball into the solid currency of three points and were undone in the 94th minute when Fulham’s Darren Bent grabbed a late leveller. “We deserved to get back in the game and we deserved to win it, but we gave away a diabolical second goal,” Moyes told reporters. “We should have made it 3-1 and it was really disappointing that we didn’t do that. We should have seen the game out. “I don’t know if we could have done an awful lot more. We completely dominated the game and should have won it comfortably.” He added on MUTV: “We needed to take the opportunities that were given to us, like some of the half chances. “I don’t think anyone can really say we did a lot wrong, we tried to play it, get it wide at the right times. What we needed to do was get the third goal when we were 2-1 up.” The draw
was a blow to United’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League and left them in seventh place, nine points adrift of Liverpool in fourth. United’s leaky defence were undone after 19 minutes when Steve Sidwell was left unmarked to sidefoot home a pass from Lewis Holtby. The champions set up camp in the Fulham half but did not find a breakthrough until the 78th minute when Robin van Persie finished from close range. ROSA KHUTOR - Women ski jumpers will compete in the Olympics for the first time on Tuesday after more than a decade of pleading, fighting, tears and humiliation and while the athletes are happy to make their Games debut in Sochi they say their fight isn’t over yet. The sport favours light jumpers and although women can often leap as far as men, they were excluded on the grounds there were not enough good athletes to ensure a real competition. Jessica Jerome realised in 2002 she was not being allowed to compete and that U.S. skiing authorities had little interest in women’s jumping. Peter Jerome bought a book titled: “Non profits for dummies” and set up a body to raise money and awareness of the sport. “It very quickly turned into other things, like a huge lobbying organisation for inclusion of women in the Olympics,” he told Reuters. The small non-profit is now Women’s Ski Jumping USA, which runs and largely funds the sport. “I didn’t think it would be as costly as it was ... for all the board members in terms of the amount of time and effort and angst and heartache,” said Jerome, who had to fit his work for the body around a career as an airline pilot for Delta.

Women jumpers had petitioned to be included in every Games since Nagano in 1998 but it was not until April 2011 that the International Olympic Committee announced female athletes could compete on the normal hill in Sochi. Each time the IOC argued there were not enough good women jumpers to guarantee a quality competition. And the backers of women’s ski jumping were learning that few people seemed to realise or care that female athletes had been excluded. “I definitely had levels of frustration beyond belief. I just couldn’t believe ... that so many people still lived in the Dark Ages,” Jessica’s mother Barb told Reuters. Women eventually gained their own secondtier international competition in 2004 but could not break into the Olympics. Some suspected sexism might be partly responsible and noted comments that International Ski Federation President Gian Franco Kasper made to National Public Radio in 2005. “Don’t forget, it’s like jumping down from, let’s say, about two metres on the ground about a thousand times a year, which seems not to be appropriate for ladies from a medical point of view,” he said. Shelves with a couple thousand books have been crammed into a hallway of Ukrainian House, an exhibition center and former Lenin museum that protesters took over two weeks ago after attacking it with rocks and firebombs to drive out police who were sheltering there. It’s hardly a model of finicky propriety — no one hushes the patrons, tough young men holding clubs confront unfamiliar people — but for those who come to read, it’s an oasis for the intellect and a break from the tensions of the Maidan, the downtown square that is the center of protests now in their third month. “It’s very important for the Maidan because it’s cool, it’s not extremist, not radical — it’s study: painting, art, different
projects,” said Eugeniy Fedirets, a young IT specialist who was pawing through a box of newly donated books. He was picking out some books on Ukrainian history, which one of the library’s organizers, Andzhelika Zozula, said has been the most popular topic among the 200-500 people who visit every day. The library is an element of the extensive community that has grown up around the protests, including field kitchens, first aid
stations and clothes distribution booths. Zozula said the library’s lending policies are in line with that communitarian spirit, trusting patrons to sign their correct names and rewarding the return of books with a piece of candy. “Libraries in Ukraine usually are very poor,” said volunteer Lilija Shmyhelska. “When we have the opportunity to bring it all together, to create it, we do it and we do it better than the government.”

SINGAPORE — Airbus showed off its new wide-body A350 on Monday ahead of Asia’s biggest airshow, signaling that the jet’s delivery schedule is on track and stepping up its battle with Boeing for the lucrative long-haul market. The European plane-maker gave reporters a look at the twin-engine A350 before it goes on display at the Singapore show starting Tuesday in its first public appearance since its debut flight in June last year. It will also join the show’s flying display. A little more than half of the jet is made of lightweight carbon fiber to make it lighter and more fuel efficient, a key consideration for airlines contending with volatile fuel prices. The A350, which comes in three versions typically carrying 276 to 369 passengers and has a list price ranging from $254.3 million to $332.1 million, will allow Airbus to step up competition in the long-haul market dominated by Boeing’s 777 and 787 jets. Airbus has received 814 orders for the A350 so far, with 30 percent coming from Asian airlines such as Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways and Singapore Airlines. The region is a crucial market for plane makers because its economic growth is driving rapid expansion of jet fleets. Airbus hopes to woo buyers by showing off the plane to trade visitors on the show’s first two days. Visitors won’t see a plane with a completed passenger cabin because it’s still outfitted with monitoring equipment used in ongoing testing. The A350 presents an alternative to Boeing’s 787, which also make extensive use of carbon fiber but suffered from teething problems last year. Lightweight lithium-ion batteries that caught fire on some planes were the highest profile problem. Airbus opted to abandon using the same type of battery on the A350 after the fires forced authorities to ground the 787 fleet for more than a month. “Airbus has learned a lot from the 787 Dreamliner’s unfortunate problems since its launch. This is the plane for the next decade and beyond,” said Shukor Yusof, an airline analyst at Standard & Poor’s. He predicted that Asian and Middle East carriers would place more orders over the next two years because of the plane’s fuel efficiency, advanced design, long range and cheap operating and maintenance costs. “If you’re the CEO of an airline and you’ve seen the problems that airlines have had with their 787s, you’d seriously have to consider the A350.”

Singapore has complained to Indonesia, its third-largest trading partner, about naming the warship “KRI Usman Harun”. Usman Haji Mohamed Ali and Harun Said were executed in Singapore for their role in the March 1965 blast at a downtown office complex which killed three people and injured 33. The attack was part of an effort by then Indonesian president Sukarno to stage an armed confrontation against the newly formed federation of Malaysia,
which included Singapore. Singapore acrimoniously split from Malaysia to become an independent country on August 9, 1965. Total trade between Singapore and Indonesia reached Sg$79.4 billion ($62.6 billion) in 2012. Singapore’s airshow is Asia’s top aerospace and defence gathering and features daily flying displays by military aircraft from several countries including the United States. It runs until Sunday.

The end of her sentence was brought forward to 2016 after she received several remissions for good behaviour, and a five-year cut following an appeal for clemency to the Indonesian president. Her parole bid was a complex, months-long process which repeatedly ran into bureaucratic hurdles. The process sped up in recent weeks when a justice ministry parole board in Jakarta finally heard her case. Her application included letters of support from the Australian government, as well as her family, the head of the Balinese village where she will live and Kerobokan prison.

US economy may be stuck in slow lane for long run Associated Press
WASHINGTON — In the 4½ years since the Great Recession ended, millions of Americans who have gone without jobs or raises have found themselves wondering something about the economic recovery: Is this as good as it gets? It increasingly looks that way. Two straight weak job reports have raised doubts about economists’ predictions of breakout growth in 2014. The global economy is showing signs of slowing — again. Manufacturing has slumped. Fewer people are signing contracts to buy homes. Global stock markets have sunk as anxiety has gripped developing nations. Some long-term trends are equally dispiriting. The Congressional Budget Office foresees growth picking up through 2016, only to weaken starting in 2017. By the CBO’s reckon-
ing, the economy will soon slam into a demographic wall: The vast baby boom generation will retire. Their exodus will shrink the share of Americans who are working, which will hamper the economy’s ability to accelerate. At the same time, the government may have to borrow more, raise taxes or cut spending to support Social Security and Medicare for those retirees. Only a few weeks ago, at least the short-term view looked brighter. Entering 2014, many economists predicted growth would top 3 percent for the first time since 2005. That pace would bring the U.S.
economy near its average postWorld War II annual growth rate. Some of the expected improvement would come from the government exerting less drag on the economy this year after having slashed spending and raised taxes in 2013. In addition, steady job gains dating back to 2010 should unleash more consumer spending. Each of the 7.8 million jobs that have been added provided income to someone who previously had little or none. It amounts to “adrenaline” for the economy, said Carl Tannenbaum, chief economist for Northern Trust. And since 70 percent of the economy flows from consumers, their increased spending would be expected to drive stronger hiring and growth. “There is a dividing line between a slow-growth economy that is not satisfactory and above-trend growth
with a tide strong enough to lift all the boats and put people back to work,” said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi. “That number is 3 percent.” The recovery had appeared to achieve a breakthrough in the final quarter of 2013. The economy grew at an annual pace of 3.2 percent last quarter. Leading the upswing was a 3.3 percent surge in the rate of consumer spending, which had been slack for much of the recovery partly because of high debt loads and stagnant pay. Yet for now, winter storms and freezing temperatures, along with struggles in Europe and Asia, have slowed manufacturing and the pace of hiring. Just 113,000 jobs were added in January, the government said Friday. In December, employers had added a puny 75,000. Job creation for the past two months is roughly
half its average for the past two years. A third sluggish jobs report in February would further dim hopes for a breakout year. “Three months in a row would mean the job market is taking a turn for the worst,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for PNC Financial Services. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Nobel Prize winner Paul Krugman have suggested that the economy might be in a semipermanent funk. In November, Summers warned in a speech that the economy is trapped by “secular stagnation.” By that, he meant a prolonged period of weak demand and slow growth. If the United States hasn’t already slipped into that period, the CBO predicts it could over the next four years. That’s when the retirements of baby boomers would start to restrain growth.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported Monday that Zuckerberg’s donation was the largest charitable gift on the public record in 2013 and put the young couple at the top of the magazine’s annual list of 50 most generous Americans in 2013. The top 50 contributors made donations last year totaling $7.7 billion, plus pledges of $2.9 billion. The Chronicle’s editor says the most significant fact from the list was the amount of money coming from living donors, which totaled about the same amount as the two previous years combined. “It’s a sure sign that the economy is getting better and people are getting a lot less cautious,” said Stacy Palmer, Chronicle editor. Some of the nation’s biggest givers do not appear on the 2013 list, not because they stopped being generous, but because their donations in 2013 were counted as pledges in previous years. For example, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, gave their foundation slightly more than $181.3 million last year, but they were paying off a pledge of about $3.3 billion they made in 2004. CNN-founder Ted Turner and Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett also
made large gifts toward previous pledges. It took gifts totaling at least $37.5 million to make the list this year. Forty-two of the top 50 made gifts of $50 million or more. Thirty made big gifts to colleges and universities, but Palmer noted most college gifts went to science and research this year, not to buildings, as in previous years. Avalanche hampers roads access of Tampaksiring-Tegallalang Bali Post
GIANYAR - The rain flushing on Sunday afternoon (Feb 9) caused another avalanche at Tampaksiring region. At this time, the avalanche occurred at the border region between Tampaksiring and Tegallalang (leading to Bayad hamlet, Kedisan village). As a result, the road access connecting two subdistricts was hampered by the avalanche materials. Based on information compiled at the location, the avalanche was said to occur around five o’clock in the afternoon. Around the scene, it rained somewhat heavily. Land condition at roadside turned unstable so that the avalanche was inevitable. A jackfruit tree uprooted as the land was dragged by the avalanche. The entire road body was blocked by avalanche materials and trees. However, such incident did not last long. The quick response team of the Gianyar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) directly came down to location thirty minutes after receiving the information and then made an evacuation. Up to five o’clock in the afternoon, the avalanche could be resolved so that the road access of TampaksiringTegallalang could be back to normal. The Head of BPBD Gianyar, Anak Agung Oka Digjaya, accompanied by his section head Wayan Eka said the team along with a number of equipment was directly deployed to the scene to help residents open the road access. Until the night, the officers were still trying to open the line of Tampaksiring to Bayad hamlet, Kedisan village, Tegallalang subdistrict. In response to the extreme weather happened lately, he expected all people to always improve alertness. As Japanese and Chinese, Balinese language also has its own characters. They consist of some 18 main characters and 10 vowel sounds. Ordinarily, Balinese characters are used to write palm-leaf manuscript or lontar. Such characters are incised with sharp knife or stylus. When the writing works have completed, they should be rubbed with a blend of oil and lamp shoot to blacken them. So they are visible easily. Since the works were performed manually, the copying of a manuscript took a long time. At a glance, Balinese characters look like Old Javanese, Tamil (India). It is inseparable from historical aspect where they had similarity of genealogical lines. Today, Balinese characters still have restricted use, namely at school for local subject from elementary school to senior high school. It is becoming the responsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages. Balinese language poses a medium and spirit of Balinese
culture. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books for commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous
wisdoms that are relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Of course, such treasures will be beneficial for the conservation and future development of Balinese culture because it stays in touch with its original roots. Young generation should be introduced to these roots at early stage. Later, they will not lose their identity and even could feel proud of it. Moreover, it could give them inspiration in making their creativities, either in fine arts, performance, traditional architecture or herbal healings. Thanks to modern technology, the writing of Balinese characters now can be made easy by Bali Simbar font. It is the innovative thinking of I Made Suatjana (1986) lies behind the composing of this font. His work has helped the writing of Balinese characters in word processing application like Microsoft Word. Hopefully, there would be more creative software helping the development and learning of Balinese language so it would not come into extinction or be far left behind with the modern life.

Later on, at least a minimum of 25 hectares of land would be required for the nature-based tourism development.
Based on field research, the forest area of Suter village is the most appropriate place for the development of this nature-based tourism because the nature is very supportive and has very strategic location in the proximity to Penelokan tourist attraction. It poses the center of Kintamani tourist attraction. The nature-based tourism will be developed in various types of tourist attraction such as bird park, trekking, jungle trekking, horse riding as well as educational tour and research. In addition, a restaurant will be built on tree top, and the facilities of outbound and hanging house on cliff top. The accused never committed criminal acts of fraud or embezzlement in the sale of precious stone with the victim witness Patrick Finlay as described in the indictment. Another consideration was that the judges stated the case did not belong to a criminal act but to civil act so he should be acquitted of all charges and lawsuits. When asked for his confirma-

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has canceled for a second time its invitation for a senior U.S. envoy to visit the country to discuss a long-detained American’s possible release, the State Department said Monday. The cancellation comes only days after detained American missionary Kenneth Bae told a pro-Pyongyang newspaper that he expected to meet this month with the envoy. It signals an apparent protest of upcoming annual military drills between Washington and Seoul and an alleged mobilization of U.S. nuclear-capable B-52 bombers during training near the Korean Peninsula. North Korea calls the planned drills a rehearsal for invasion, a claim the allies deny. The State Department also said in a statement that civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson has offered to travel to North Korea at the request of Bae’s family. The State Department did not elaborate and referred questions to Jackson, whose spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Analysts say North Korea has previously used detained Americans as leverage in its standoff with the U.S. over its nuclear and missile programs; North Korea denies this. Bae has been held in North Korea for 15 months. The North accused him of smuggling in inflammatory literature and trying to establish a base for antigovernment activities at a border city hotel. Bae was quoted last week in an interview with the Japanbased Choson Sinbo newspaper as saying that a Swedish diplomat told him the U.S. envoy on North Korean human rights issues, Bob King, would visit him as early as Monday and no later than the end of the month. Bae said he also heard from the diplomat that the U.S. government had told North Korea that it intends to send the Rev. BANGKOK - More than 1,000 farmers protested outside the Thai government’s temporary headquarters on Monday over the state’s failure to pay for rice bought under a subsidy scheme that the caretaker administration admits it is struggling to fund. The rice programme was a signature policy of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who was swept to power in 2011 with the help of millions of rural votes, but has become one of the biggest threats to her grip on power. The unrest among farmers has opened a new front against Yingluck’s government, which has been facing off against a Bangkok-based protest movement seeking to drive it from office for nearly three months. One of the organisers of those protests was arrested on Monday, the first of the core leaders to be held since the campaign to disrupt normal business in the capital began in November. The protests, which are still blocking parts of Bangkok, have found much of their support from middle-class, urban taxpayers appalled at what they see as corruption and waste in the rice scheme. Tarit Pengdith, head of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), Thailand’s equivalent of the FBI, said protest leader Sonthiyarn Chuenruethai-naitham was being detained by border patrol police on the outskirts of the city. BOSTON — It was April 1956, and the No. 1 song was Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” At the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, scientist Dean Bumpus was busy releasing glass bottles into the Atlantic Ocean as part of his work to track currents. Nearly 58 years later, a biologist studying grey seals off Nova Scotia found one of the bottles in a pile of debris on a beach. “It was almost like finding treasure in a way,” Warren Joyce said Friday. The drift bottle was among thousands dumped in the Atlantic Ocean between 1956 and 1972 as part of Bumpus’ study of surface and bottom currents. About 10 percent of the 300,000 bottles have been found over the years. Joyce found the bottle Jan. 20 on Sable Island, about 185 miles southeast of Halifax. He contacted scientists at Woods Hole and dutifully gave them the time and place information Bumpus had asked for in a postcard inside the bottle. His reward will be exactly what Bumpus promised in 1956 to anyone who returned a bottle: a 50-cent piece. “I didn’t want the reward, but they said they are sending it to me anyway,” Joyce said, chuckling. Joyce said the bottle had been sandblasted over about 75 percent of its surface. He could still read the words, “Break This Bottle,” so he did. Inside, there was a note from Bumpus explaining that the bottle was among many being released to study the ocean.

If there is any violation, we will ticket it,” said the Traffic Affairs Chief of Denpasar Police, I Nyoman Nuryana. Such a measure was made because many travelers complained related to traffic jam. Having been surveyed and analyzed, said Nuryana, in fact it was not caused by the number of vehicles, but by the poorly managed parking. On that account, his party took decisive measure to gather the hoteliers and restaurateurs. “Actually it is the vehicle, especially the car coming in and out of the parking lot, triggering the traffic jam. Moreover, the parking space is dominantly used by hotel and restaurant employees, including the hawkers,” he said. the advancement of tourism in Kuta. “If traffic jam occurs and travelers do not want to make a visit, they also suffer a loss. In addition, the view along the road would look more beautiful because the parking of motorcycle was neatly arranged. “We told to parking authority in order the head of motorcycle is facing out (facing the road—Ed). Thus, the motorcycle owner can directly move. Now, we still focus on arranging the parking space on Jalan Pantai Kuta,” he added. Meanwhile, according to tourism academician, Ni Made Eka Mahadewi, tourism was a dominant and leading sector of Bali. No doubt all the economic, cultural, social and environmental activities were driven by the presence of tourism. “Tourism is defined as an activity for fun or to get a delight or better live, done in free time or vacation, done with spending money, and get out of the area where people live or there is removal. If any of these activities are not met then the activity cannot be
categorized into tourism activities,” she added. Tourism, said the lecturer of the Bali Tourism Institute (STP Nusa Dua), had an impact as described above. If it was related to tourism, then the presence of congestion could affect the tourism activities. Such condition would have an impact in the whole and could directly affect the revenue of all related sectors of the industry. “For example, the impact of traffic congestion is that tour guides are unable to set the time of their trip schedule, tour package sales will get disturbed and fun activities will be disrupted. In addition, the flow of tourist money that should be spent to shop, eat, buy a souvenir and enjoy attractions will be delayed and even canceled. Consequently, travelers will get irritated and complain. This can lead to poor destination image,” said Eka. In order to remain to become a preferred destination, according to associate professor of the STP Nusa Dua, Bali should at least focus on destination competitiveness index factor. Bali should also focus on creating a transportation system complying with the requirements and creating comfort, security, value for money destination, satisfaction and a positive image for travelers. MANGUPURA - Badung government will establish a sustainable farmland with total area of 17,223 hectares. This acreage is less than the previous estimation namely at least 18,000 hectares. Of the six subdistricts in Badung, it is only Kuta having no sustainable farmland. The Head of Badung Agriculture, Plantation and Forestry Agency, IGAK Sudaratmaja, said the sustainable farmland would set forth in the Detail Spatial Plan (RDTR) of each subdistrict. The current acreage of farmland had been socialized with the RDTR to each subdistrict. He said that among the six subdistricts in Badung, only Kuta subdistrict that did not have a sustainable farmland. It happened because the development in this subdistrict was very crowded. Thus, it left no productive farmland. Meanwhile, related to the total area of sustainable farmland, Sudaratmaja admitted there was a change from the previously estimated amount. Current farmland conversion reaching hundreds of hectares was difficult to be prevented due to a variety of reasons and considerations, especially with regard to the infrastructure development. He said the sustainable farmland consisted of wetlands or paddy fields and dry farmlands. Later on, these lands could not be tampered with or converted or they were exclusively intended for farmland. Meanwhile, the paddy field in Badung totally spread across 9,723 hectares. On the other hand, Sudaratmaja also highlighted the problem of farmland conversion in Badung. Decline in the farmland was also one of the causes of the reduced number of farming households (RTP) in Badung. From the results of the Agricultural Census 2013 in Badung, the farming household in Badung decreased by 34.72 percent from the previous census 10 years before (2003). In 2013, the farming household in Badung amounted to 39,975 people, while in 2003 reached 44,773 people. “Other than decline in the farmland, many farmers also switched their profession by looking for other job opportunities to sustain their economy,” he said. To note, approximately at the end of 2013 the Badung government planned to set at least 18,000 hectares of sustainable farmland. Such acreage was predicted to come from the 10,195 hectares of paddy fields and about 8,000 hectares of dry land agriculture. The decrease in the land area at the time was predicted only about 195 hectares. Secretary of the Indonesian Economists Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. I.B. Raka Suardana, said that modern market should pay attention to the existence of traditional markets, so it would not shut off the traditional markets. “Traditional market must be grown, developed and reinforced by favoring policies of the government, especially in terms of regulation,” said Raka Suardana, Saturday (Feb 8). According to him, traditional markets should also make improvement in line with the demands of today’s consumers accentuating services, comfort, sanitation, safety and satisfaction. Thus, the behavior of traders in traditional markets should also be changed. Besides, the modern store should also pay attention to the existing regulations, especially the chained modern stores, so as not to aggressively open
more outlets to remote villages that could shut off stalls or shops owned by local communities. “The players of traditional stalls or shops should also improve, at least can make their stall or shop worth visiting by today’s modern consumers, especially in terms of services and the comfort must be considered,” he explained. He said the weakness of traditional stall or shop lay in the matter of sanitation and comfort. This deficiency should be improved in order to provide convenience for consumers. “The government, both county and municipal government, must be more selective in issuing permit to modern markets and modern stores. The distance between the modern market and modern store should consider the existence of traditional markets or stores,” he said.
He argued that establishment of the modern market or modern stores should make partnership with the players of local Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and have CSR programs. It could be done by marketing the SME products such as packaging or repackaging the products with the brand of modern stores or another brand having been agreed in order to increase the selling value of the products. Besides, the marketing the SME products could also be made through the storefront or outlet of modern store. “Modern stores can also provide business space in the area of modern markets or modern stores for small businesses with rental price in accordance with the capability of the small businesses or which can be used by small business through other cooperation in the form of partnerships,” he said. SEMARAPURA - Heavy rain for two hours resulted in flooding in the Semarapura town, Klungkung, Sunday (Feb 9). The rain accompanied with strong winds and flashes of lightning caused the culvert to clog. As a result, a number of lines in the Semarapura town were hit by floods. One of them was at the four-way intersection. This icon of the Klungkung town was besieged by floods from three directions as high as adult thigh. Heavy rains in Klungkung began around two o’clock in the afternoon. Flush of the rain for two hours caused large enough floodwater from the north, right from Jalan Gajah Mada. Apparently, the culvert along the road was clogged. Thus, the rainwater directly besieged the four-way intersection on Jalan Gajah Mada. At the location, the floodwater also flowed to Jalan Diponegoro eastward, Jalan Puputan southward and Jalan Untung Surapati westward. Floods at the four-way intersection were getting severe after the coming of floods from the opposite direction on Jalan Diponegoro and Jalan Untung Surapati. Thus, the four-way intersection was completely surrounded by floods. By degrees, the flood leading to Jalan Puputan westward receded. A number of road users were trapped in the middle of flood, precisely at point of four-way intersection. Even, vehicles such as cars and motorcycles broke down in the middle of the flood. Meanwhile, other motorists seemed to turn round after seeing the path in front of them was surrounded by floods. Meanwhile, the rain at that time was still very heavy. “The flood is quite large. Rather than being trapped in flood and breaks down, I prefer to turn round to other line,” said one of the residents, Wayan Nata, Sunday. Until 4:30 in the afternoon, the flood at the four-way intersection was not secure enough to be passed through by vehicles. Though having receded, the floodwater on Jalan Puputan remained quite high. Even, the next heavy rain flushed Klungkung at 4:45 p.m. Thus, both cars and motorcycles coming from the four-way intersection ultimately turned round. Similarly, the flooding also caused vehicles on the road to jam for four hours. However, the vehicles could begin to move at late afternoon. Unsurprisingly, the flood also drew the attention of local residents. One of them was Gede Sarjana where he said the flood at the intersection very rarely happened. “This severe flood is for the first time. Apparently, the culvert in the north is blocked. Moreover, the culvert was never maintained. Due to clogged culvert, a number of sidewalk parts exploded. So far, it has not been repaired,” he said. Other than the intersection, the Semarapura Market was also besieged by floods. For instance, the Block D was hit by floods and receded slowly around 5:10 p.m. Another resident, Wayan Putra, said the other path in the Semarapura town was also besieged by floods. For instance, it happened on the five-way intersection leading to Jalan Flamboyan, Jalan Ngurah Rai, Jalan Surapati and Pegending village. However, the floods at these areas were not as severe as at the four-way intersection. Puddles were also seen on Jalan Kecubung. Seeing this phenomenon, every culvert needed to be checked and repaired. Allegedly, a number of culverts in the Semarapura town had been clogged by rubbish. “When it rained heavily like this, we just knew if the culvert has been filled by rubbish,” said Wayan Putra. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BERLIN — Actor Shia LaBeouf hit the Berlin Film Festival in memorable style Sunday, first walking out of a press conference for the film “Nymphomaniac Volume I” and then wearing a paper bag over his head at the red carpet premiere. The actor posed for photographers in a stylish tuxedo — and a paper bag with eyeholes and the words “I am not famous anymore” written across it. LaBeouf has frequently used the statement on his Twitter page, and he was identifiable by a tattoo on his hand.
The unconventional attire came shortly after the star walked out of a press conference with co-stars Uma Thurman and Christian Slater to promote Lars von Trier’s film, the first installment of a two-part drama about a woman’s sexual life from girlhood to age 50. A reporter’s question as to whether the actors were worried about the film’s sex scenes elicited the response: “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. NEW YORK — “The Lego Movie” clicked with moviegoers, assembling an exceptional $69.1 million debut at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates. The better-than-expected result made the Warner Bros. collaboration with the Danish toy company easily the biggest hit of the year so far. A sequel is already in development for the 3-D animated film, digitally drawn to mimic a world composed entirely of Lego bricks. The film has drawn raves from critics. Co-directors and co-writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“21 Jump Street,” ‘’Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”) gave the film a playful tone to capture the whimsy of a child playing in a box of Legos. Characters are largely voiced by comic actors like Chris Pratt and Will Ferrell. The film marks the biggest animation hit for Warner Bros., a studio that despite popular live-action franchises has struggled to develop animated hits on par
with other studios. “I can’t imagine this not turning into a long-term franchise,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “This is such a runaway success that Warner Bros is now a major player in the animated genre.” Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., said the film, made with a production budget of $60 million, resounded because of the popularity of the Lego brand. KEROBOKAN - Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby, her face veiled against a horde of press photographers, was hustled out of prison Monday to start the next chapter of her troubled life after more than nine years behind bars in Bali. The 36-year-old, who is now out on parole, covered her face with a scarf and hat as she was ushered into a minibus waiting outside Kerobokan jail on the resort island, as camera crews and photographers fought to get a shot of her. Corby, whose case has drawn huge fascination in Australia since she was caught entering Bali in
2004 with marijuana stashed in her surfing gear, sped off to complete final administrative steps for her release, with journalists giving chase. After visiting government officials who will oversee her parole in Indonesia -- where she must remain until 2017 -- she was whisked away by a black SUV to a luxury resort and spa in the popular Seminyak
district. A bidding war has heated up in recent days for her first post-jail interview and a second black car containing a TV crew raced into the resort after Corby, while the rest of the following media pack were barred from entering. As expected the former beauty school student, whose proclamations of innocence and battle with depression in prison drew great sympathy in Australia, did not comment but one official said she seemed upset. “We asked her how she was. She cried and said she was still feeling traumatised due to all the
journalists,” said Agung Bagus Kusimantara, from the Bali prosecutors’ office. The media have been camped outside Kerobokan jail for the past week in anticipation of her release, with one Australian television network alone having reportedly dispatched 17 staff. Indonesian Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin announced on Friday that Corby had been granted parole following a drawnout process that repeatedly ran into bureaucratic hurdles.
