Kardashian driver among 17 arrested in France over jewel heist
PARIS - French police investigating the theft of nearly $10 million in jewels from Kim Kardashian arrested 17 people on Monday, including a chauffeur who drove the American reality television star around Paris in the days before the robbery. Many of those arrested in coordinated police raids in several different parts of France were known underworld figures aged around 50 and at least three were women, police and judicial sources said. French radio and TV reports on Monday said DNA traces from the scene of the heist led police to the suspects and that they would be held for questioning, possibly for as much as four days. A police source said one of those detained was Kardashian’s chauffeur when she was visiting Paris in October for Fashion Week and that police were trying to establish whether he had passed on information to the gang. Kardashian, 36, was photographed frequently while on the Paris trip, attending fashion shows and parties. She also posted numerous pictures to her social media accounts. Jean Veil, a French lawyer for Kardashian, told France 2 television: “She (Kardashian) is very happy, very satisfied and to a certain extent reassured by the ef-

They tied her up at gunpoint before making off with her engagement ring and other jewels, police said at the time. They fled on bicycles with jewellery worth 9 million euros ($9.5 million). Kardashian was badly shaken but physically unharmed. She has mostly since kept a low public profile but broke her silence on the robbery in
a promotional clip for the upcoming season of her reality TV show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” which was released on Friday. “They’re going to shoot me in the back. Ronaldo wins FIFA’s player of the year award ZURICH - Cristiano Ronaldo won FIFA’s player of the year award for the fourth time on Monday, beating his old rival Lionel Messi who was pulled out of the ceremony only a few hours earlier by his club Barcelona. Italian Claudio Ranieri won the coach of the year award for leading rank outsiders Leicester City to the English Premier League title. Ronaldo was rewarded for his performance in 2016 when he won the Champions League with his club Real Madrid and then Euro 2016 with Portugal. Five-times winner and four-times runner-up Messi was second and Frenchman Antoine Griezmann third. Barcelona said that Wednesday’s game against Athletic Bilbao would take priority over the ceremony and that none of their invited players would travel, which disappointed Ronaldo. “I would like Messi to have been here today but they have an important game on Wednesday and we can understand that,” he said after accepting the award from FIFA president Gianni Infantino. “I don’t have much more to say, I think the awards
speak for themselves,” he added. “I’m very happy and I can say that 2016 was the best year of my career, the trophy shows that people aren’t blind and watch the games.” FIFA, which organised the award jointly with France Football magazine from 2010 to 2015 when it was named the Ballon d’Or, rebranded it as “The Best” this year after splitting with the French publication. Be cautious, fraudsters rove around ATM
MANGUPURA - Criminals associated with ATM continue to act, even though many of them have been arrested. Currently the fraudsters impersonating to offer help when bank customers get difficulty to withdraw money at ATM are on the rise. This was also experienced by Alfred Nicholas Saudale, 47, on Sunday (Jan. 8) when withdrawing money from the ATM BRI in front of Harta Dewata supermarket at Dalung, North Kuta, Badung. According to an officer of Badung Police on Monday (Jan. 9), it happened at 11:00. The victim wanted to withdraw money through ATM of Bank BRI at the scene. After trying to insert ATM card for three times, he always failed. When the victim left the ATM booth, suddenly there was an unidentified man approaching the victim and intending to help insert the ATM card into the machine. When the ATM card was inserted, the perpetrator directly went away and the victim did not see any further process on the display screen of the ATM machine. A moment later came another man
directed the victim to press PIN number. Since it did not succeed, the man went away, but the victim saw the card stuck in the ATM machine. He tried to pull out with a screwdriver and pliers. After successfully taken out, the victim re-entered the ATM card, but it was not his. “The victim then contacted to BRI and got a print out. He was quite surprised because the money in the savings has been withdrawn and transferred as much as IDR 25 million,” said the officer asking for anonymity. Chief of Badung Police, Ruddi Setiawan, confirmed the report regarding the case. “Please contact to criminal investigation unit. The case is still under investigation,” he said. Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit, Mikael Hutabarat, said that the perpetrator changed the victim’s ATM card while pretending to help. After that, the victim’s savings were transferred. “Meanwhile, the CCTV footage is being explored by North Kuta Police,” he said. (kmb36)

Waymo self-driving minivan will start test drives this month
DETROIT — Waymo, Google’s self-driving car division, will start testing its new fleet of minivans on public roads in California and Arizona later this month.
The minivans, built in collaboration with Fiat Chrysler, are Chrysler Pacifica hybrids outfitted with Waymo’s own suite of sensors and radar. Waymo and FCA announced their partnership in May. In a speech at the Detroit auto show Sunday, CEO John Krafcik revealed that Waymo built the sensors, radar and software for the new minivans itself. Krafcik said the company felt the system would work better if it was developed specifically for selfdriving instead of using off-the-shelf parts. “A single integrated system means that all the different parts of a self-driving car work together seamlessly,” Krafcik said. Waymo also was able to significantly lower the cost of the system, Krafcik said. The rooftop lidar — which uses lasers to give the car a three-dimensional picture of the world — cost $75,000 a few years ago. Waymo has brought that cost down by 90 percent and
has developed its own short-range and long-range lidar. Waymo’s long-range lidar can see a football helmet two football fields away. Krafcik didn’t say exactly how Waymo lowered the costs. But the announcement could concern suppliers like Velodyne, which makes lidar systems used by Ford Motor Co. and others, and Delphi Corp., which is developing its own autonomous driving system. Stephanie Brinley, an auto analyst for IHS Markit, said Google won’t control the market for self-driving technology, so other suppliers with go ahead with development of their own systems. But some smaller players in the nascent industry are “going to fall away,” she said. Waymo has repeatedly said that it doesn’t plan to build its own cars, but provide self-driving systems to established carmakers, car-sharing services or others. In addition to FCA, Honda Motor Co. recently announced that it’s in talks with Waymo about using its technology in Honda vehicles. Krafcik said Waymo, which has been developing self-driving cars for eight years, expects to reach 3 million miles of test-driving this May. (ap)

Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones since its debut, spawning millions of mobile applications and prodding other technology companies to make similar smartphones that have become like phantom limbs for many of us. We use iPhones and their copycats to instantly share video and pictures with friends and family from almost anywhere. We use them to figure out where we are going. We use them to find the best deals while shopping in stores and to pay for stuff at the checkout stand. We use the phones to a hail ride, to tune instruments, to monitor our health and help find our next jobs. Phones have gotten so smart that they even talk back to us via helpful digital concierges such as the iPhone’s Siri and the recently introduced Assistant on Google’s Pixel phone. “IPhone is an essential part of our customers’ lives, and today

BANGLI - Jelekungkang hamlet, Tamanbali, Bangli, was formerly renowned as arrack producer in Bangli district. In the past, almost all citizens at the local hamlet produced arrack at their respective home. Over time, the number of arrack makers at Jelekungkang diminished. Of the hundreds of people involved in the business of arrack making, currently only two people still survive. Gusti Ketut Ada, 64, is one of two craftsmen at Jelekungkang hamlet remaining to survive up to these days. When interviewed at his home on Monday (Jan. 9), Gusti Ketut Ada said that in the past almost residents of Jelekungkang ran the business of arrack making. This then made the arrack produced at local hamlet labeled as Jelekungkang arrack. “In the past, the arrack of Jelekungkang was very famous. In Bangli, it is the only hamlet remaining to produce arrack,” he said. However, over the times the arrack making business is increasingly left by Jelekungkang resi-
dents. Various job options available offer more promising income as well as anxiety due to frequent enforcement operation against alcohol by police caused a number of arrack makers at Jelekungkang to continuously decrease. Gusti Ada said that currently there are only two arrack makers, including him. “Arrack makers have been getting rarer now. They mostly chose to work elsewhere in construction projects and young people work in Denpasar,” he said. This husband of Gusti Biang said that the arrack he produced all this time is made with traditional techniques. All this time, the results of homemade arrack are sold in traditional market as a complementary to ritual offerings. Each day he just produces not more than one liter of arrack. In order to be able to produce one liter of arrack, he said, the distillation process takes up to three hours. For a liter of arrack, he cooks ten liters of wine into a saucepan. His arrack product is sold for IDR 30,000 per liter. (kmb40)

The iPhone’s revolutionary touch screen doomed the BlackBerry, another once-popular internetconnected phone. Mobile phones and their tablet cousins triggered a downturn in personal computer sales that is still unfolding. An estimated 219 million desktop and laptop computers shipped worldwide last year, down from 264 million in 2007, according to the research firm Gartner Inc. Meanwhile, nearly 1.9 billion mobile phones shipped last year, up from 1.15 billion in 2007. All told, Gartner estimates about 5 billion mobile phones are currently in use around the world compared to 1.3 billion PCs. The eroding popularity of PCs spurred shake-ups at powerful tech companies such as Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Dell, none of which adapted nimbly to the mobile world unleashed by the iPhone. Then-Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer scoffed at Apple’s glassand-metal gadget, telling USA Today in April 2007 that “there’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.” Microsoft wound up squandering the $7.6 billion that it spent to buy phone maker Nokia in a futile attempt to catch up to the iPhone. Ballmer stepped down as CEO three years ago and was replaced by Satya Nadella, who introduced versions of Microsoft’s popular Office programs that worked on Apple’s iPad — a tablet based on the iPhone. Having arranged the parking lot and some SME stalls in the region, currently the government of Denpasar through the Tourism Office will re-arrange the management. This plan has been discussed in internal meeting with Regional Secretary of Denpasar last week.

There are rules that need to be synchronized namely the Law No.19/2016 related to guidelines on managing assets or property owned by local government with the Law on tourism. “We have to coordinate with the BPKP so that the asset management on the beach is in accordance with the existing rules,” he said. Gunawan said that the land under the authority of municipal government of Denpasar located on
Mertasari Beach, Sanur Kauh, spreads across about 2.3 hectares. It has been arranged for parking lot and 15 stalls have been established for merchants. In the future, he wanted the area can be managed more professionally because when only managed by the government, it will become less optimal. He mentioned that pursuant to the existing provisions, the government can delegate management authority to the components of society. With a more competent management, it is expected to maximize the results. “Initially, we will make coordination first, so that the application of the rules will not go wrong because we will use two references. So, it needs to be synchronized first,” he explained. As is known, the Mertasari Beach is a place of recreation for citizens of the surrounding Denpasar. Moreover, during holidays, residents throng the beach so that it is pretty crowded and good for bathing or canoeing and other water recreation. Moreover, some time ago the central government already established a building next to the area belonging to Denpasar city. The traditional cuisine is known as taro satay. It becomes a typical cuisine owned by Pedawa village because taro is commonly planted by residents in the area of coffee or clove plantations. Then, grill the satay on embers prepared from coffee trunks. Heat and smoke of the coffee trunk generate typical aroma of the taro satay of Pedawa. When tasted, the taro satay is sticky and complete seasoning made from herbs and spices really taste good, especially the spicy flavor. GIANYAR - To meet the chili needs in Gianyar, merchants are now relying on agricultural commodity production in the northern region. In southern region of Gianyar like Sukawati, chili plants begin to dry out and should be replaced with other plants such as tobacco. This was disclosed by the Head of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Made Raka. Made Raka mentioned that rain in recent months indeed has a significant impact on agriculture, especially chili commodity. “Prolonged rains have significant impacts, not just on chili but also on other agricultural products such as onions where they do not grow up,” he said. He said that to meet the chili needs at a number of markets in Gianyar, his agency is now relying on the chili production around Northern Gianyar especially Tegallalang, including from Kintamani, Bangli. “Yesterday, there was quite a lot of chili deteriorating. So far, the chili production to be relied on is from Tegallalang and surrounding areas,” he said. The incident, which occurred on Sunday and was first reported by Reuters, comes as U.S. Presidentelect Donald Trump prepares to take office on Jan. 20. In September, Trump vowed that any Iranian vessels that harassed the U.S. Navy in the Gulf would be “shot out of the water.” “This was an unsafe and unprofessional interaction, and that is due to the fact that they were approaching at a high level of speed with weapons manned and disregarding repeated warnings,” Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a briefing. The warning shots were fired at the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats by the USS Mahan after it established radio contact but failed to get them to slow down, Davis said, confirming earlier accounts of U.S. defense officials. Those officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the Iranian vessels came within 900 yards (800 meters) of the Navy destroyer, which was escorting two other U.S. military ships. The Mahan also fired flares and a U.S. Navy helicopter also dropped a smoke float before the warning shots, they said. The IRGC and Trump transition team were not immediately avail-
able for comment. The White House said the Iranian vessels had behaved in an unacceptable manner and that such incidents risked increasing tensions. “At this point the United States does not know what the intentions of the Iranian vessels were, but the behavior is not acceptable given that the USS Mahan was operating in international waters,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said during a press conference on Monday. Years of mutual animosity eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran last year after a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. JERUSALEM - Israel’s government has been quick to suggest a Palestinian who rammed a truck into a group of Israeli soldiers at the weekend was inspired by Islamic State, raising questions over how it came to that conclusion. Hours after the attack on Sunday, which killed four soldiers and wounded 17, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the assailant showed all the signs of being a supporter of the ultra-hardline Sunni movement. He did not give details and on Monday, an obscure Palestinian group claimed responsibility, saying it had no outside links and had acted on political motives. Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman had also pointed to Islamic State, citing parallels with Islamic State-inspired attacks on crowds using trucks in Germany and France last year. “We saw it in France, we saw it in Berlin and unfortunately we saw it today in Jerusalem,” he said during a visit to the scene overlooking Jerusalem’s Old City.
The group which said it was responsible for the attack gave few details and it was not possible to verify the claim, but in Israel, multiple voices pointed out the differences between Palestinian violence and that perpetrated by Islamic State. Egypt’s annual urban consumer price inflation jumps to 23.3 pct in December
CAIRO - Egypt’s annual urban consumer price inflation jumped for the second month since the pound was freely floated last year to reach 23.3 percent in December from 19.4 percent in November, the official CAPMAS statistics agency said on Tuesday.
Egypt abandoned its currency peg of 8.8 to the U.S. dollar on Nov. 3 in a dramatic move that has since seen the currency depreciate roughly by half. It accompanied the move with a 300 basis point interest rate hike to fight inflationary pressures. Despite the hike, inflation is rising sharply and is expected to climb further this year as the government pushes on with economic reforms, including fuel subsidy cuts and the implementation of a value-added tax (VAT), that helped it secure a $12 billion International Monetary Fund loan programme. In cities and towns, food and beverage inflation touched 28.3 percent in December. Healthcare inflation stood at 32.9 percent while transportation was 23.2 percent. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is under increasing pressure to revive the economy, keep prices under control and create jobs to avoid a backlash from the public. Sisi predicted last month that the Egyptian pound would strengthen in the coming months and promised to ensure basics were available and affordable. The government has expanded its social security network and some 70 million Egyptians have access to state subsidised bread. Egypt’s non-oil business activity shrank for the 15th consecutive month in December as inflation caused purchase costs to rise at a near-record pace. Economists said rising inflation would erode spending power, hit economic growth and prompt further hikes to interest rates, which are already up to 15.75 percent. Egypt’s central bank has held interest rates steady at two monetary policy meetings following its flotation and some economists expect further rate hikes this year. BERLIN - The euro zone should be split into two with a strong cluster around Germany and a weak cluster including France, the co-leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Joerg Meuthen, said in a Reuters interview. “The euro is a seed of discord in Europe that has different currency cultures and different competitiveness levels,” Meuthen said. The AfD has climbed to 15 percent in opinion polls ahead of September’s election, but no other party in Germany is willing to form a coalition with it.
Meuthen, speaking by telephone, said the German economy could suffer for a year or two in the wake of such a euro zone split. “The euro is too strong for southern European countries while for Germany and several others it’s too weak,” he said. “It’s conceivable that the weaker countries leave,” he said, mentioning Italy, Spain, Portugal and France. He said Greece is so weak that no country wants to share a currency with it. Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Finland should remain in the core euro group, he said, even though a stronger currency would
hurt exports from those countries. “That could cause an economic slump (in Germany),” he added. “It’s impossible to say how deep. But in my view the economic slump would be over in about a year or two.” Meuthen distanced himself from a proposal from France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen. LONDON - A clean break with the EU’s single market is not inevitable, British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday, seeking to clarify comments that pushed down the pound on the possibility of a hard Brexit from the European Union. She criticised British media for misinterpreting what she described as long-term position on EU talks but the pound failed to recover from a 10week low and was down more than 1 percent to the dollar and 1.2 percent against the euro on the day. May, under pressure to offer more detail on her strategy before launching divorce talks with the European Union, said on Sunday in her first televised interview of the year that Britain would not be able to keep “bits” of its membership. LONDON - Triple Olympic track champion Kenenisa Bekele, the secondfastest marathon runner in history, will make another attempt at claiming the world record over the classic 26.2 mile distance when he leads a stellar field for the London marathon in April. Ethiopian Bekele, widely regarded as the greatest distance runner of all time and world record holder over 10,000 and 5,000 metres, ran two hours, three minutes and three seconds when winning Berlin last September, six seconds outside Dennis Kimetto’s world record of 2:02:57 set on the same course in 2014. Having been left out of the Ethiopian team for the Rio Olympics a month earlier it was a clear message from Bekele that he had mastered the marathon after intially producing very good, but not world bestthreatening times in his first forays over the distance. The 34-year-old, with five track world titles to his name over 10,000m and 5,000, finished third in London last year behind Kenyan duo Eliud Kipchoge and Stanley Biwott and Kipchoge’s course record of 2:03:05 and Kimetto’s world mark will both
be in his sights. “London is the greatest marathon in the world and I would love to win there,” Bekele said in a statement issued by race organisers revealing the lineup on Monday. “The field is always the best and victory means so much. After finishing third last year, I know what I need to do to win.” Biwott, who won the 2015 New York City Marathon, is likely to be Bekele’s main rival as he leads the Kenyan challenge in the absence of two-time champion Kipchoge. Biwott finished runner-up in 2014, fourth in 2015 and second again last year in a personal best of 2:03:51. The leading pair are two of seven in the field who have run under 2:06, while the race will also feature two marathon world champions, three of the top five finishers from last summer’s Olympics, and the winners of the Abbott World Marathon Majors races in Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago and New York in 2016. Abel Kirui, who won the world marathon title in 2011 and 2013, returns to London for the first time since 2012 when he was fifth, four months before winning Olympic silver in the same city.

ZURICH — FIFA will expand the World Cup to 48 teams, adding 16 extra nations to the 2026 tournament which is likely to be held in North America. President Gianni Infantino’s favored plan — for 16 three-team groups with the top two advancing to a round of 32 — was unanimously approved Tuesday by the FIFA Council. It meets Infantino’s election pledge of a bigger World Cup, and should help fund promised raises for FIFA’s 211 member federations. With 80 matches instead of 64, FIFA forecasts the equivalent of $1 billion extra income at current rates from broadcasting and sponsor deals, plus ticket sales, compared to $5.5 billion revenue forecast for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. FIFA projects an increased profit of $640 million despite some extra operating costs and prize money for teams. FIFA’s six continents should find out by May how many extra places they will each get. UEFA wants 16 European teams at the tournament, which is strongly favored to be played in North America. The CONCACAF region has not hosted the World Cup since the 1994 tournament in the United States. American, Canadian and Mexican soccer leaders have had informal talks about a co-hosting bid. Africa and Asia could be winners in a bigger World Cup with up to nine places each. They had only five and four teams, respectively, at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Still, FIFA said it expects the standard of soccer to drop compared to the 32-team format locked in for the next two World Cups in Russia and Qatar. The “absolute quality” of play, defined by highranked teams facing each other most often, is achieved
by 32 teams, FIFA acknowledged in a research document sent to members last month. It made 10,000 tournament simulations to reach that conclusion. However, it leaves one team idle for final group games and could risk collusion between the other two teams. FIFA said it could guard against result-rigging by introducing penalty shootouts after group games that end in draws. Despite the 16 extra games, FIFA believes the current maximum of stadiums needed will stay at the 12 used by Brazil and Russia. However, the demand for more training bases and hotels means developed countries would be better equipped to win future hosting contests. North America is the strong favorite for 2026 because European and Asian countries are blocked by a FIFA rule excluding continents which hosted either of the two previous tournaments. Social media was flooded with congratulatory messages for the Malaysian Super League player, including from Prime Minister Najib Razak and other national leaders. “Your achievement in the #FIFAPuskasAward 2016 will inspire all Malaysian footballers and also makes the country proud!” the prime minister said in a Twitter post. LONDON - Triple Olympic track champion Kenenisa Bekele, the secondfastest marathon runner in history, will make another attempt at claiming the world record over the classic 26.2 mile distance when he leads a stellar field for the London marathon in April. Ethiopian Bekele, widely regarded as the greatest distance runner of all time and world record holder over 10,000 and 5,000 metres, ran two hours, three minutes and three seconds when winning Berlin last September, six seconds outside Dennis Kimetto’s world record of 2:02:57 set on the same course in 2014. Having been left out of the Ethiopian team for the Rio Olympics a month earlier it was a clear message from Bekele that he had mastered the marathon after intially producing very good, but not world bestthreatening times in his first forays over the distance. Trump’s son-in-law Kushner to become senior White House adviser
WASHINGTON - U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will become a senior White House adviser working on trade and the Middle East, transition officials said on Monday, in a rare case of a close presidential family member taking a major job.
Kushner, 35, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka, is taking the post after receiving legal counsel that doing so would not violate U.S. anti-nepotism law, transition officials said. The position, unlike Cabinet posts, does not require U.S. Senate confirmation, and Kushner will not be paid. LONDON - A clean break with the EU’s single market is not inevitable, British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday, seeking to clarify comments that pushed down the pound on the possibility of a hard Brexit from the European Union. She criticised British media for misinterpreting what she described as long-term position on EU talks but the pound failed to recover from a 10week low and was down more than 1 percent to the dollar and 1.2 percent against the euro on the day. May, under pressure to offer more detail on her strategy before launching divorce talks with the European Union, said on Sunday in her first televised interview of the year that Britain would not be able to keep “bits” of its membership. Some commentators saw that as a sign she was heading for a hard Brexit, which business says would damage the economy by breaking links with the single market of 500 million consumers. May shot back that the media was using terms she did not accept. “I’m tempted to say that the people who are getting it wrong are those who print things saying I’m talking about a hard Brexit, (that) it is absolutely inevitable there’s a hard Brexit,” she told the Charity Commission, a government department that regulates charities in England and Wales. “I don’t accept the terms hard and soft Brexit. What we’re doing is (that we are) going to get an ambitious, good, best possible deal for the United Kingdom in terms of ... trading with and operating within the single European market.” May’s frustration was clear. Egypt’s annual urban consumer price inflation jumps to 23.3 pct in December
CAIRO - Egypt’s annual urban consumer price inflation jumped for the second month since the pound was freely floated last year to reach 23.3 percent in December from 19.4 percent in November, the official CAPMAS statistics agency said on Tuesday.
Egypt abandoned its currency peg of 8.8 to the U.S. dollar on Nov. 3 in a dramatic move that has since seen the currency depreciate roughly by half. It accompanied the move with a 300 basis point interest rate hike to fight inflationary pressures. Despite the hike, inflation is rising sharply and is expected to climb further this year as the government pushes on with economic reforms, including fuel subsidy cuts and the implementation of a value-added tax (VAT), that helped it secure a $12 billion International Monetary Fund loan programme. In cities and towns, food and beverage inflation touched 28.3 percent in December. Healthcare inflation stood at 32.9 percent while transportation was 23.2 percent. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is under increasing pressure to revive the economy, keep prices under control and create jobs to avoid a backlash from the public. Sisi predicted last month that the Egyptian pound would strengthen in the coming months and promised to ensure basics were available and affordable. The government has expanded its social security network and some 70 million Egyptians have access to state subsidised bread. Egypt’s non-oil business activity shrank for the 15th consecutive month in December as inflation caused purchase costs to rise at a near-record pace. Economists said rising inflation would erode spending power, hit economic growth and prompt further hikes to interest rates, which are already up to 15.75 percent. Egypt’s central bank has held interest rates steady at two monetary policy meetings following its flotation and some economists expect further rate hikes this year. BERLIN - The euro zone should be split into two with a strong cluster around Germany and a weak cluster including France, the co-leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Joerg Meuthen, said in a Reuters interview. “The euro is a seed of discord in Europe that has different currency cultures and different competitiveness levels,” Meuthen said. The AfD has climbed to 15 percent in opinion polls ahead of September’s election, but no other party in Germany is willing to form a coalition with it.
Meuthen, speaking by telephone, said the German economy could suffer for a year or two in the wake of such a euro zone split. “The euro is too strong for southern European countries while for Germany and several others it’s too weak,” he said. “It’s conceivable that the weaker countries leave,” he said, mentioning Italy, Spain, Portugal and France. He said Greece is so weak that no country wants to share a currency with it. Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Finland should remain in the core euro group, he said, even though a stronger currency would
hurt exports from those countries. “That could cause an economic slump (in Germany),” he added. “It’s impossible to say how deep. But in my view the economic slump would be over in about a year or two.” Meuthen distanced himself from a proposal from France’s far-right leader Marine Le Pen. She said that France should leave the euro but shift to a new national currency accompanied by a framework similar to the pre-euro era of the ECU. “The euro exit shouldn’t be linked to a fixed exchange rate system,” he said. “The currencies need to be able to breathe.”(rtr)

ASIDE from natural beauty and spinning top art, Pedawa village in Banjar subdistrict, Buleleng, also has a unique traditional cuisine and remains to be preserved until now. The traditional cuisine is known as taro satay. It becomes a typical cuisine owned by Pedawa village because taro is commonly planted by residents in the area of coffee or clove plantations. Then, grill the satay on embers prepared from coffee trunks. Heat and smoke of the coffee trunk generate typical aroma of the taro satay of Pedawa. When tasted, the taro satay is sticky and complete seasoning made from herbs and spices really taste good, especially the spicy flavor. GIANYAR - To meet the chili needs in Gianyar, merchants are now relying on agricultural commodity production in the northern region. In southern region of Gianyar like Sukawati, chili plants begin to dry out and should be replaced with other plants such as tobacco. This was disclosed by the Head of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Made Raka. Made Raka mentioned that rain in recent months indeed has a significant impact on agriculture, especially chili commodity. “Prolonged rains have significant impacts, not just on chili but also on other agricultural products such as onions where they do not grow up,” he said. He said that to meet the chili needs at a number of markets in Gianyar, his agency is now relying on the chili production around Northern Gianyar especially Tegallalang, including from Kintamani, Bangli. “Yesterday, there was quite a lot of chili deteriorating. So far, the chili production to be relied on is from Tegallalang and surrounding areas,” he said. In the meantime, many chili plants having been repeatedly harvested in Southern Gianyar like Sukawati, start to dry out. “I think chili plants in Sukawati has started to dry up, and they are usually replaced with tobacco plant or other plants such as corn,” he said. The incident, which occurred on Sunday and was first reported by Reuters, comes as U.S. Presidentelect Donald Trump prepares to take office on Jan. 20. In September, Trump vowed that any Iranian vessels that harassed the U.S. Navy in the Gulf would be “shot out of the water.” “This was an unsafe and unprofessional interaction, and that is due to the fact that they were approaching at a high level of speed with weapons manned and disregarding repeated warnings,” Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said in a briefing. The warning shots were fired at the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps boats by the USS Mahan after it established radio contact but failed to get them to slow down, Davis said, confirming earlier accounts of U.S. defense officials. Those officials, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the Iranian vessels came within 900 yards (800 meters) of the Navy destroyer, which was escorting two other U.S. military ships. The Mahan also fired flares and a U.S. Navy helicopter also dropped a smoke float before the warning shots, they said. The IRGC and Trump transition team were not immediately avail-
able for comment. The White House said the Iranian vessels had behaved in an unacceptable manner and that such incidents risked increasing tensions. “At this point the United States does not know what the intentions of the Iranian vessels were, but the behavior is not acceptable given that the USS Mahan was operating in international waters,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said during a press conference on Monday. Years of mutual animosity eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran last year after a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. But serious differences still remain over Iran’s ballistic missile program as well as conflicts in Syria and Iraq. One of the U.S. defense officials said similar incidents occur occasionally. Most recently in August, another U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots toward an Iranian fast-attack craft that approached two U.S. ships. JERUSALEM - Israel’s government has been quick to suggest a Palestinian who rammed a truck into a group of Israeli soldiers at the weekend was inspired by Islamic State, raising questions over how it came to that conclusion. Hours after the attack on Sunday, which killed four soldiers and wounded 17, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the assailant showed all the signs of being a supporter of the ultra-hardline Sunni movement. He did not give details and on Monday, an obscure Palestinian group claimed responsibility, saying it had no outside links and had acted on political motives. Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman had also pointed to Islamic State, citing parallels with Islamic State-inspired attacks on crowds using trucks in Germany and France last year. “We saw it in France, we saw it in Berlin and unfortunately we saw it today in Jerusalem,” he said during a visit to the scene overlooking Jerusalem’s Old City.

While Islam may inspire some Palestinian assailants, political motivations around Israel’s occupation and the long-running conflict remain the dominant factor, they said, suggesting the government was seeking to downplay politics. “Palestinian attacks are overwhelmingly motivated by nationalism, not by religion,” said Orit Perlov, a social media expert and research fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. “Israel is trying to generalise the phenomenon, saying everyone faces the same threat. Waymo self-driving minivan will start test drives this month
DETROIT — Waymo, Google’s self-driving car division, will start testing its new fleet of minivans on public roads in California and Arizona later this month.
The minivans, built in collaboration with Fiat Chrysler, are Chrysler Pacifica hybrids outfitted with Waymo’s own suite of sensors and radar. Waymo and FCA announced their partnership in May. In a speech at the Detroit auto show Sunday, CEO John Krafcik revealed that Waymo built the sensors, radar and software for the new minivans itself. Krafcik said the company felt the system would work better if it was developed specifically for selfdriving instead of using off-the-shelf parts. “A single integrated system means that all the different parts of a self-driving car work together seamlessly,” Krafcik said. Waymo also was able to significantly lower the cost of the system, Krafcik said. The rooftop lidar — which uses lasers to give the car a three-dimensional picture of the world — cost $75,000 a few years ago. Waymo has brought that cost down by 90 percent and
has developed its own short-range and long-range lidar. Waymo’s long-range lidar can see a football helmet two football fields away. Krafcik didn’t say exactly how Waymo lowered the costs. But the announcement could concern suppliers like Velodyne, which makes lidar systems used by Ford Motor Co. and others, and Delphi Corp., which is developing its own autonomous driving system. Stephanie Brinley, an auto analyst for IHS Markit, said Google won’t control the market for self-driving technology, so other suppliers with go ahead with development of their own systems. But some smaller players in the nascent industry are “going to fall away,” she said. Waymo has repeatedly said that it doesn’t plan to build its own cars, but provide self-driving systems to established carmakers, car-sharing services or others. In addition to FCA, Honda Motor Co. recently announced that it’s in talks with Waymo about using its technology in Honda vehicles. BANGLI - Jelekungkang hamlet, Tamanbali, Bangli, was formerly renowned as arrack producer in Bangli district. In the past, almost all citizens at the local hamlet produced arrack at their respective home. Over time, the number of arrack makers at Jelekungkang diminished. Of the hundreds of people involved in the business of arrack making, currently only two people still survive. Gusti Ketut Ada, 64, is one of two craftsmen at Jelekungkang hamlet remaining to survive up to these days. When interviewed at his home on Monday (Jan. 9), Gusti Ketut Ada said that in the past almost residents of Jelekungkang ran the business of arrack making. This then made the arrack produced at local hamlet labeled as Jelekungkang arrack. “In the past, the arrack of Jelekungkang was very famous. In Bangli, it is the only hamlet remaining to produce arrack,” he said. However, over the times the arrack making business is increasingly left by Jelekungkang resi-
dents. Various job options available offer more promising income as well as anxiety due to frequent enforcement operation against alcohol by police caused a number of arrack makers at Jelekungkang to continuously decrease. Gusti Ada said that currently there are only two arrack makers, including him. “Arrack makers have been getting rarer now. They mostly chose to work elsewhere in construction projects and young people work in Denpasar,” he said. This husband of Gusti Biang said that the arrack he produced all this time is made with traditional techniques. All this time, the results of homemade arrack are sold in traditional market as a complementary to ritual offerings. Each day he just produces not more than one liter of arrack. In order to be able to produce one liter of arrack, he said, the distillation process takes up to three hours. For a liter of arrack, he cooks ten liters of wine into a saucepan. Mobile phones and their tablet cousins triggered a downturn in personal computer sales that is still unfolding. An estimated 219 million desktop and laptop computers shipped worldwide last year, down from 264 million in 2007, according to the research firm Gartner Inc. Meanwhile, nearly 1.9 billion mobile phones shipped last year, up from 1.15 billion in 2007. All told, Gartner estimates about 5 billion mobile phones are currently in use around the world compared to 1.3 billion PCs. The eroding popularity of PCs spurred shake-ups at powerful tech companies such as Microsoft, Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Dell, none of which adapted nimbly to the mobile world unleashed by the iPhone. Then-Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer scoffed at Apple’s glassand-metal gadget, telling USA Today in April 2007 that “there’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance.” Microsoft wound up squandering the $7.6 billion that it spent to buy phone maker Nokia in a futile attempt to catch up to the iPhone. Gunawan said that the land under the authority of municipal government of Denpasar located on
Mertasari Beach, Sanur Kauh, spreads across about 2.3 hectares. It has been arranged for parking lot and 15 stalls have been established for merchants. In the future, he wanted the area can be managed more professionally because when only managed by the government, it will become less optimal. He mentioned that pursuant to the existing provisions, the government can delegate management authority to the components of society. With a more competent management, it is expected to maximize the results. “Initially, we will make coordination first, so that the application of the rules will not go wrong because we will use two references. So, it needs to be synchronized first,” he explained. As is known, the Mertasari Beach is a place of recreation for citizens of the surrounding Denpasar. Moreover, during holidays, residents throng the beach so that it is pretty crowded and good for bathing or canoeing and other water recreation. Moreover, some time ago the central government already established a building next to the area belonging to Denpasar city. SINGARAJA - Difficulty to get clean water becomes the problem faced by some villagers of Wanagiri, Sukasada, for years. for community to be largely affected. When dry season comes, the production is disrupted due to drought. “Agriculture is also disturbed. Moreover, during the drought, it dries out. On that account, some residents have to buy water to Pancasari,” he said. Responding to the issue, said Gumiasa, a number of villages had planned to utilize the water of Lake Buyan. However, since it is rumored to have a less good quality, it is
forced to be undone. Actually, there is a water source with large enough discharge around the village. Since it is located at lower place than settlement, the utilization cannot apply gravitational technique, but must be taken up with machine. This requires considerable expense and cannot be afforded by the village. “There are many water sources located about three kilometers from the center of the village. But it costs too expensive. We cannot afford it,” he said.
The issue, he said, had actually been submitted to the Buleleng government through the Public Works Agency. Unfortunately, it does not get any follow up so far. “We have submitted the proposal. We expect this can get the attention so that this problem will not prolong,” he said while adding that the availability of clean water is also necessary to support tourism sector which recently begins to flourish. Be cautious, fraudsters rove around ATM
MANGUPURA - Criminals associated with ATM continue to act, even though many of them have been arrested. Currently the fraudsters impersonating to offer help when bank customers get difficulty to withdraw money at ATM are on the rise. This was also experienced by Alfred Nicholas Saudale, 47, on Sunday (Jan. 8) when withdrawing money from the ATM BRI in front of Harta Dewata supermarket at Dalung, North Kuta, Badung. According to an officer of Badung Police on Monday (Jan. 9), it happened at 11:00. The victim wanted to withdraw money through ATM of Bank BRI at the scene. After trying to insert ATM card for three times, he always failed. When the victim left the ATM booth, suddenly there was an unidentified man approaching the victim and intending to help insert the ATM card into the machine. When the ATM card was inserted, the perpetrator directly went away and the victim did not see any further process on the display screen of the ATM machine. A moment later came another man
directed the victim to press PIN number. Since it did not succeed, the man went away, but the victim saw the card stuck in the ATM machine. He tried to pull out with a screwdriver and pliers. After successfully taken out, the victim re-entered the ATM card, but it was not his. “The victim then contacted to BRI and got a print out. He was quite surprised because the money in the savings has been withdrawn and transferred as much as IDR 25 million,” said the officer asking for anonymity. Chief of Badung Police, Ruddi Setiawan, confirmed the report regarding the case. “Please contact to criminal investigation unit. The case is still under investigation,” he said. Chief of Criminal Investigation Unit, Mikael Hutabarat, said that the perpetrator changed the victim’s ATM card while pretending to help. After that, the victim’s savings were transferred. “Meanwhile, the CCTV footage is being explored by North Kuta Police,” he said. (kmb36)

Kardashian driver among 17 arrested in France over jewel heist
PARIS - French police investigating the theft of nearly $10 million in jewels from Kim Kardashian arrested 17 people on Monday, including a chauffeur who drove the American reality television star around Paris in the days before the robbery. Many of those arrested in coordinated police raids in several different parts of France were known underworld figures aged around 50 and at least three were women, police and judicial sources said. French radio and TV reports on Monday said DNA traces from the scene of the heist led police to the suspects and that they would be held for questioning, possibly for as much as four days. A police source said one of those detained was Kardashian’s chauffeur when she was visiting Paris in October for Fashion Week and that police were trying to establish whether he had passed on information to the gang. Kardashian, 36, was photographed frequently while on the Paris trip, attending fashion shows and parties. She also posted numerous pictures to her social media accounts. Ronaldo wins FIFA’s player of the year award ZURICH - Cristiano Ronaldo won FIFA’s player of the year award for the fourth time on Monday, beating his old rival Lionel Messi who was pulled out of the ceremony only a few hours earlier by his club Barcelona. Italian Claudio Ranieri won the coach of the year award for leading rank outsiders Leicester City to the English Premier League title. Ronaldo was rewarded for his performance in 2016 when he won the Champions League with his club Real Madrid and then Euro 2016 with Portugal. Five-times winner and four-times runner-up Messi was second and Frenchman Antoine Griezmann third. Barcelona said that Wednesday’s game against Athletic Bilbao would take priority over the ceremony and that none of their invited players would travel, which disappointed Ronaldo. “I would like Messi to have been here today but they have an important game on Wednesday and we can understand that,” he said after accepting the award from FIFA president Gianni Infantino. “I don’t have much more to say, I think the awards
