CAIRO - Islamists aim to deepen their control over Egypt’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday in a final phase of voting overshadowed by a threat from a liberal party to boycott elections for the upper chamber. Banned under Hosni Mubarak, the Muslim Brotherhood has emerged as a major winner from the uprising that toppled him, exploiting a well-organized support base in the first free legislative vote in decades. Islamists of various stripes are expected to win 60 percent of the 498-seat lower house, with the Brotherhood taking some 41 percent, by its own count. Run-offs scheduled to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday and a rerun in a district where the vote was cancelled in the first round due to irregularities, are set to fill the 11 percent of seats as yet undecided, according to Brotherhood figures. The outcome of the runoffs and rerun are unlikely, however, to alter the dominance of the Islamists who now look set to wield major influence over the shape of a new constitution to be
drafted by 100-strong body that the new assembly will pick. The Brotherhood has promised that Egyptians of all persuasions will have their say. The National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi boycotted what it saw as flawed elections in 2010 that signaled the end of half a century of military rule in the former Burma but it will contest by-elections in April. Suu Kyi’s stature alone should ensure it gains a presence in parliament but the party can only live off its role in the fight for democracy for so long. It badly needs to develop policies and then win over voters who come of age in the new parliamentary era.

It’s time for us to make way for a new force.” Suu Kyi has taken the leap of faith needed to commit her party to a political system still controlled by the army and its proxies in parliament, a move welcomed by Western countries cautiously renewing ties with the nominally civilian government. In a landmark visit to Myanmar last week, British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the former junta leaders in charge of the government to ensure the polls were free and fair, making that one of the conditions for lifting sanctions imposed for human rights abuses under the military regime.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘Fake pregnancy’ woman in N.Zealand baby snatch: police Agence France
A New ealand woman who allegedly fooled her family for nine months into believing she was pregnant walked into a hospital saying she had gone into labour and abducted a baby, police said on Tuesday. When 24-year-old Neha Narayan, of Fijian-Indian descent, told her partner she was about to give birth last Wednesday he dropped her off at Auckland’s Middlemore hospital where she was able to roam the maternity ward. She was found holding one baby which she said she comforting and later she was handed an Indian baby by a hospital staff member who believed she was the mother, police spokeswoman Ana-Mari GatesBowey said. “On her way out of the hospital, when she had a small two-day-old Indian child with her that she’d taken from the birthing unit, a nurse stopped her in her tracks, and asked her to come back inside,” she told Radio Newstalk B. The parents also saw her carrying their child and alerted other staff who called the police as Narayan made her way to where her partner was waiting in the car. Narayan has been charged with abduction and will appear in court later in the month.

Attack on car near Freeport mine in Papua kills 2 Associated Press
TIMIKA — Two Indonesian workers were shot to death in an attack near Freeport-McMoRan’s gold and copper mine. Freeport Indonesia spokesman Ramdani Sirait said the victims were employees of a contractor who were by car near the mining town of Tembagapura. Sirait says initial reports indicate that gunmen fired on the vehicle. Police were not immediately available for comment on Monday’s attack. The mine in restive Papua province is run by a subsidiary of the Phoenix, Arizona-based FreeportMcMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. It has been hit with arson, roadside attacks and blockades since operations began in the 1970s.

He said at least five commodities were listed as the biggest foreign exchange earners. They were palm oil, cocoa, rubber, coconut and copra, and coffee. Palm oil was predicted to contribute US$19.05 billion to the country`s foreign exchange earnings from planta-
tion commodities, followed by rubber US$12.4 billion, cocoa US$1.284 billion, coconut and copra US$1.198 billion, coffee US$1.09 billion. By volume, the country`s plantation commodity exports were predicted to fall to 24.5 million tons in 2011 from 25.6 million tons in 2010, he said. SEMUR LIDAH OVERVIEW: Although native to Indonesia, the nutmeg is not often used in cooking. One exception is the braised meat dish known as Semur, which is generally made with beef. This Balinese version uses ox tongue and partners the inimitable fragrance of nutmeg with sweet soy sauce. INGREDIENTS: 2,5 lt (10 cups) water 600 gr (1 ¼ lb) ox tongue, washed well 1 cup beef stock 4 tbsp sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) 2 tbsp thin soy sauce ¾ tsp ground black pepper ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg 4 ea salam leaves 3 fragrant lime leaves 3 tbsp fried shallots 3 medium size potatoes, peeled and cut in 2 cm (3/4 in dice) Fried shallots to garnish PREPARATION: 1. Bring water to boil in a heavy stockpot, add beef spice paste and salam leaves, whole ox tongue and bring back to boil. 2. Reduce heat and simmer for approximately 3 hours or until tongue is cooked and very tender. 3. Plunge ox tongue into ice water and cool for 5 minutes. Peel skin off with a sharp knife. 4. Slice ox tongue in thin even slices and place in saucepan. 5. Fill up with beef stock and add all remaining ingredients. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 6. Add potatoes and continue to simmer until potatoes are cooked. 7. Garnish with fried shallots.

NEW YORK - New DNA reader could bring genetics to medical clinics After years of predictions that the “$1,000 genome” - a readout of a person’s complete genetic information for about the cost of a dental crown - was just around the corner, a U.S. company is announcing Tuesday that it has achieved that milestone and taken the technology several steps ahead. The new genome-sequencing machine from Ion Torrent, a division of Life Technologies Corp., in Guilford, Connecticut, is 1,000 times more powerful than existing technology, says CEO and chairman Jonathan Rothberg. Taking up about as much space as an office printer, it can sequence an entire genome in a single day rather than six to eight weeks required only a few years ago. The new sequencer, says cardiologist Eric Topol, chief academic officer of private California hospital and
doctor network Scripps Health, “represents an exceptional advance and can change medicine.” Ion Torrent will sell the tabletop machine, called the Ion Proton Sequencer, for $99,000 to $149,000, making it affordable for large medical practices or clinics; existing sequencers cost up to $750,000. Jumping lizards adjust the position of their tails in mid-air to ensure a smooth landing, and certain agile dinosaurs probably did likewise. So say a team of biomechanics who put some red-headed agama lizards (Agama agama) through their paces in a laboratory. The scientists filmed the African reptiles as they jumped from a horizontal platform to a vertical wall.

Slow-motion footage showed that if a lizard had to hoist the front part of its body in order to land correctly, it bent its long, slender tail upwards. By curling its tail, the lizard provided a clockwise movement that gave an anticlockwise tilt to the front of its trunk. This enabled the critter to land safely, paws-first, onto the wall. Few lizards may have known this, but they were upholding the principle of conservation of angular momentum by exploiting the moment of inertia. Tightrope walkers, too, use this principle. They correct their balance by using a long pole. It is tilted to make the body lean in the opposite direction to the tilt. The team, led by Robert Full of the University of California at Berkeley, built a lizard-sized robot car, complete with a
tail controlled by gyroscopes, to see whether the lizard’s agility could be replicated by technology. When the car jumped off the ramp, it started to fall nose-first, but this angle was smartly corrected by a movement of the tail, and the toy vehicle -- named “Tailbot” -- landed on its wheels. Previous research has suggested there are several species of animals that use their tail to harness the moment of inertia, including lemurs, cats and kangaroo rats. The paper speculates that small, two-footed carnivorous dinosaurs, including the velociraptor made notorious by the movie Jurassic Park, may also have done the same trick. Larger dinos, though, are unlikely to have jumped far, if calculations of their bone-to-muscle ratio are right.

Rossi won’t rush 2013 decsion Valentino Rossi says he is not yet thinking too hard about his future beyond 2012, but would like to achieve success with Ducati before moving teams or retiring. The seven-time MotoGP champion failed to win a race in his first season with the Italian squad last year. Rossi said his preference was to continue in MotoGP beyond this season, and that ideally he hoped to take Ducati back to the top before leaving the sport. “The scenario is that during the season everything will become interesting, because all riders have their contracts expiring, so cards can be shuffled,” he said. “Honestly I don’t know [about the future]. I would like to be able to make Ducati go fast and be able to win something, and then perhaps even stop - to race for a few more years and achieve some good results this is perhaps my goal but there are many other possibili-
ties, but not now. “I would like to at least do another contract so would like to sign at least another two-year contract.” Rossi added that he did not want his 2013 deliberations to become a distraction from trying to improve Ducati’s form in 2012. “I think we are going to be speaking about the contract during the season, because we have to organise ourselves for 2013,” he said. “I do not want to do it too soon because when you risk losing concentration on the championship as it is underway, but we will try and plan my future.” Although Rossi has long been linked to future in car racing or rallying, he said there were no firm plans for this at present, only ambitions for whenever he did
decide to finish with MotoGP. “I am a great fan of cars, and I had two occasions to try the Mercedes DTM in 2006,” said Rossi. “It is a fantastic car, one of the nost fun cars I have ever driven, so I would love to do races in DTM - but these are projects to talk about when I finish motorbikes. “For cars, I have no programmes apart from Monza Rally, but I tried GT3 in Mugello and I hope on some other occasions. LONDON - Kimi Raikkonen will prepare for his Formula One comeback with some laps in a two-year-old Renault race car in Spain this month before official testing starts in February, the Finn’s Lotus team said Monday. “We can now confirm that Kimi Raikkonen will be completing some mileage in the team’s R30 car at Valencia on 23rd/24th January,” Lotus, formerly Renault, said on their Twitter feed. Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion with Ferrari, has not driven an
F1 car since he left the sport for the world rally championship after the 2009 season-ender in Abu Dhabi. The first pre-season test of the year will start at the Jerez circuit, in southern Spain, on February 7 when Lotus will have their new car on track. Under cost-saving regulations that limit testing, Raikkonen will not be able to drive the latest equipment until Jerez and nor will he be able to use the Pirelli tires that were introduced last year. The 32-year-old had a seat fitting at the team factory in England last week.
