The American movie studio deleted images of the poster, which it had placed on Australian Twitter and Facebook accounts this week, after it was slammed by users of the social media sites. “We are deeply sorry to have used that artwork for the marketing materials promoting the September 11 opening in Austral i a ,”
Paramount Australia said in a statement. “Combining that image and date was a mistake. We intended no offence and have taken immediate action to discontinue its use.” The World Trade Center Twin Towers collapsed during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York. NEW YORK — NBC has picked its Peter Pan: high-flying “Girls” star Allison Williams. The network announced Wednesday that Williams will play the boy who refused to grow up in NBC’s new staging of “Peter Pan Live!” The live telecast of this musical classic will air Dec. 4. The 26-year-old actress-comedian plays Marnie Michaels on HBO’s comedy “Girls,” for which she has recorded several songs. She is the daughter of NBC News anchor Bria n Williams and has also appeared on “The Mindy Project” and “The League.” NBC recently announced that Oscar winner
Christopher Walken will play the villainous pirate Captain Hook. “I have wanted to play Peter Pan since I was about three years old, so this is a dream come true,” said Williams, who added, “What could go wrong in a live televised production with simultaneous flying, sword fighting and singing?” This musical version of “Peter Pan” has a long tradition on NBC. It opened on Broadway in 1954, starring Mary Martin as the flying boy and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook in a pair of Tony Award-winning performances. They reprised their Broadway roles in a live telecast of the production that aired on NBC in 1955, revived a year later with a second live telecast — and then, in 1960, with a new, videotaped “Peter Pan” that again starred Martin and Ritchard. The upcoming “Peter Pan Live!” is a follow-up to the success NBC found with a live version of “The Sound of Music” in 2013 with Carrie Underwood. DENPASAR - Evidently the Benoa Bay reclamation plan has been prepared carefully by investor PT Tirta Wahana Bali Internasional (TWBI). In the proposal of the Benoa Bay reclamation sent to the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs and the Bali government, it is mentioned that the Benoa Bay water area to be reclaimed will reach a total area of 810 hectares of the existing water area of 1,400 hectares. The reclamation process is targeted to take 34 months. Under the proposal, PT TWBI mentions that on the 810 hectares reclaimed land area will be focused on the development of tourist destinations and other business supporting activities. Total investment of the reclamation and development of business activities on the reclaimed land reaches IDR 30 trillion. But at least 40 percent of the area will include local content. Chapter IV of the proposal carries the land utilization plan where the 810 hectares of reclaimed land area will be used for some activities. Firstly, the area of commercial development such as retail as well as Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (MICE) area will
cover an area of 84.2 hectares. Secondly, residential and commercial development or the development of mixed area needs 37.6 hectares. Thirdly, the development of recreational activities such as recreational parks and resorts is allocated with a total of 116.9 hectares. Meanwhile, office area gets the allocation of 29.4 hectares. Fifthly, residential development in the form of standard residential apartments, villas and villas on water will include a total land area of 389.7 hectares. Sixthly, a total of 8.3 hectares will be earmarked for public facilities. Seventhly, the green open space will get the allocation of only 85 hectares or 10.49 percent of the
total 810 hectares of reclaimed land. It means that PT TWBI is not consistent with the commitment aka lying whereas in the introduction of the proposal is mentioned that 40 percent of the land area will be allocated for greening. Eighthly, 8.3 hectares will be intended for Pudut Island and 34 hectares for road infrastructure. Regarding the material of reclamation such as sand will be drawn from the results of dredging in the harbor area experiencing siltation and from the islands around the reclamation site. Similarly, the materials will also be taken from the coastal sand of Sawangan (Nusa Dua), Sekotong (Lombok), a
number of locations in Karangasem and the former dredging materials of groove deepening and seabed at location of the Benoa Bay project. In the introductory chapter, the PT TWBI mentions the reclamation is intended for alternative evacuation venue in case of a tsunami, expanding the area of Bali Island so as to increase tax revenue for the government, both the Land and Property Tax (PBB) and Regionally Generated Revenue (PAD) and increasing the area of green open space. Besides, it is also intended to protect, conserve, rehabilitate, utilize and enrich coastal resources and small islands sustainably. Another purpose is to revitalize the Pudut Island by providing additional social facilities and public facilities. However, the proposal does not give specific discussion about the revitalization of Pudut Island and the responsibility of PT TWBI for the island preservation including the area of mangrove for-
est—Grand Forest Park (Tahura)— around the reclamation site. The proposal gives more highlight to the aspects of Benoa Bay reclamation for the interest of investment and business. Meanwhile, regarding the purpose of business or investment is mentioned that the Benoa Bay reclamation increases the investment value in Bali as much as IDR 30 trillion. On the other hand, in the introductory section of the proposal, PT TWBI mentions the reclamation plan is motivated by the degrading condition of Benoa Bay due to sedimentation and pollution caused by human activities in the form of activities at Benoa Harbor, toll road over the waters as well as a number of other developments located adjacent to the Benoa Bay. Such conditions are considered to threaten the Grand Forest Park denoting a conservation area of the Ministry of Forestry. (kmb29)

One of the citrus farmers at Pecatu village, I Ketut Nomer, said that citrus farming was actually very promising for family’s economy. However, citrus farming had been left by most local communities in South Kuta. In harmony with the increasing demand for fruits, especially citrus, he and several other farmers re-invigorated the citrus farming. Yet, growing citrus at Pecatu was not easy. Farmers, he said, had not been able to work on the potential maximally because they still faced many problems such as the availability of water for watering and marketing that had not penetrated the hotel. “Nursery transplant is also a problem, although it has been given support by the government,” he said. NEGARA - A vessel passenger riding motorcycle drowned under the quay MB 1 at Gilimanuk Harbor, Wednesday morning (Jul 30). The incident was triggered by a motorist Anshori from Pengambengan, Negara who was getting out in a hurry from the passenger vessel. Although the rider got splashed with his motorcycle, the victim survived. Information obtained around the quay mentioned if Anshori riding the motorcycle with license plate DK 5473 WN sailed from Ketapang Harbor towards Gilimanuk on Wednesday morning. At that time, the vessel was crowded with private vehicles both cars and motorcycles. Around 07:00 a.m., the passenger vessel Labrita moored at quay MB-1. When the vessel ramp door was down, a number of motorcycles could not wait to get out of the vessel. Some motorcycles lined
up before going out, but the Honda Supra X motorcycle from behind suddenly overtook the other cars and motorcycles through the right side of ramp door. Meanwhile, dozens of other motorcycles at that time were preparing to get out of the vessel. When overtaking, the victim was alleged to be inadvertent so slid out of the ramp door and fell before touching the quay. A moment after getting splashed, the resident from Munduk hamlet, Pengambengan could be evacuated with his motorcycle by the officers at the quay. Chief of Gilimanuk Marine Police, Nyoman Wirya Sucipta, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident if the motorcycle slid into the sea. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

KUTA - Thousands of Idul Fitri holidaymakers crowded the famous Kuta beach in Bali. Since 9 am visitors kept flowing to the beach blocking Jalan Pantai Kuta, the only accessible road to the beach. Main roads around the neighborhood such as Jalan Legia, Jalan Imam Bonjol, Sunset Road, and Seminyak were also crowded causing serious traffic jams. To break the jams, traffic police had to work hard to spread traffic flows through several short cuts. The chief of the Kuta Beach Task Force, Gusti Ngurah Agung Tresna, said the number of visitors had soared drastically. “Just look at Kuta Beach, Legian Beach. They are all very crowded,” he said. A visitor from Jakarta, Halimah, said she was glad she could visit Bali with her extended family. “This is the first time I have come to Bali. I am very glad I could enjoy the Idul Fitri holiday in Bali,” she said. She expressed hope that the beautiful Kuta beach would be maintained and preserved. Hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists meanwhile were seen releasing baby turtles into the sea. “This is done as part of campaign to preserve rare animal species in Bali,” Gusti Ngurah Agung Tresna said. Agung Tresna, who is a Kuta beach turtle preservation campaign volunteer, said around 100 baby turtles from their conservation center in Kuta beach were released that day. He expressed hope that the event could also offer a special attraction to visitors. He said, “Baby turtles must be released into the sea soon after birth, as they immediately need water to survive.” In view of that, he said no exact schedule was given for their release. A visitor from Surabaya in East Java who took part in the event, Septa, said he felt proud he could participate in releasing the baby turtles. “This is a rare event,” he said, while hoping that the baby turtles would survive so that their population would increase.

He remarked that Australia meanwhile had imported 9.33 percent of the products. The products were also exported to Singapore reaching 8.16 percent, Japan 7.48 percent, Thailand 0.36 percent, Germany 3.18 percent, Hong Kong 0.09 percent, France 8.08 percent, Spain 2.03 percent, Britain 13.57 percent, and the rest 25.52 percent were exported to other countries. Siregar however pointed out that the foreign exchange income from the exports of non-knitted garments had dropped by 23.47 percent as compared to US$5.42 million noted in April. In the past five months of this year, Bali’s industry and trade service recorded that the exports of textile and textile products from the region dropped by 12.14 percent in value to only US$53.28 million as compared to US$60.65 million in the same period last year. The exports of textile and textile products contributed 24.78 percent of the total exports from the region that reached US$215.04 million, he added. The income came from the exports of a total of 37.75 million pieces of the products in the first five months of this year, down 2.91 percent from 38.88 million pieces in the same period last year. An exporter, Ni Nyoman Sukerti, stated on a separate occasion that although the exports of garments were not as good as that recorded in previous years, the exports still continued, especially to the US. She added that the exports of garments had dropped from first rank to third and now trail behind the exports of wooden products and fish, including shrimps. As a result of that, she said many garment manufacturers have now started competing in the domestic market.

The damage happens from the faucet in the sink to the blockage in the water drains. Not only that, some damaged toilets sometimes exude bad odor. For instance, such conditions can be found in the toilet owned by the guardhouse of Bangli Municipal Police. According to one of the officers met on Wednesday (Jul 30), the toilet located near the parking area could not be functioned because the discharge channel was
blocked. To repair, some of the officers were forced to make an effort independently. “Formerly, this toilet was also blocked and could not be used. Recently, this can be used again,” he said. The General Affairs Division Head of Bangli Regional Secretariat and Asset, AA Trisnawijaya, when asked for his confirmation did not deny if the condition of most toilets in Bangli County had been damaged. To that end, his party planned to make improvement to some of those toilets. Currently his party was proposing the fund to repair the toilets in the amended budget.

CONAKRY, Guinea — Hundreds of people leaving a late-night rap concert on a beach in Guinea rushed to leave through a single exit, creating a stampede that killed at least 33 people, officials said Wednesday. The victims included children as young as 10, and most bodies brought to an overflowing morgue in the capital were still dressed in bathing suits and swim trunks. Some had bled from their mouths after their small bodies were trampled, causing internal bleeding.
“We are not used to seeing such a large number of bodies at the same time. It’s such a tragedy, these young victims killed in the prime of their life,” said an employee at Donka Hospital where bodies awaited burial. The hospital’s director, Dr. Fatou Sike Camara, announced the toll of 33 deaths. President Alpha Conde went on national television to declare a week of national mourning and promised a full investigation. The capital’s beaches also were ordered closed until further notice. “The president calls on au-
thorities at all levels to take the necessary steps so that this same tragedy never happens again in our country,” his office later said in a statement. More than 700 people had gathered on the beach in Conakry, the capital city, for a concert celebrating the end of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which featured the Guinean rap groups Instinct Killers and Banlieuzart. Witnesses said the stampede happened after the show ended as the large crowd tried to exit through a small gate. Some people fell to the ground and were trampled.

Samsung profit falls as smartphone sales slow

SEOUL, South Korea — Samsung Electronics Co. reported a bigger-than-expected fall in second quarter profit on Thursday and said it was uncertain if earnings from its handset business would improve in the current quarter. Samsung warned earlier this month that the second quarter would be its worst in two years as rapid growth in smartphone sales had faded. The company particularly struggled to compete in cheap smartphones, currently the fastest growing part of the global smartphone business. Samsung shares dived 4 percent in Seoul. Its net income for the April-June quarter dropped 20 percent to 6.3 trillion won ($6.1 billion) from 7.8 trillion won a year earlier. That was the lowest since the second quarter of 2012. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast 6.5 trillion won income. Sales fell 9 percent to 52.4 trillion won while operating profit sank 25 percent to 7.2 trillion won, in line with Samsung’s guidance
earlier this month. Robert Yi, head of investor relations, told a conference call that Samsung had higher marketing expenses as competition increased in mid- to low-end smartphones and because it tried to clear old inventory before the release of updated smartphone models in the fall. Tablet computer sales also fell, he said, citing weak overall demand.

The Swiss National Bank says the profit in its half-year results is largely based on gains in the gold, foreign exchange and capital markets.
The central bank said Thursday that net profit on foreign currency positions stood at 12.6 billion francs while its gold holdings gained 3.5 billion francs in value. In January, the bank reported that its 2013 results included a loss of 15 billion francs in the value of its gold holdings, but that was partly offset by gains in foreign currency and from selling its stabilization fund that bailed out Swiss bank UBS AG.

Net profit was $5.31 billion, up from $1.74 billion in the same period a year earlier. Shell booked net one-time charges of $979 million in the quarter, down
from $2.21 billion in the second quarter of 2013. The Anglo-Dutch company produced 3.08 million barrels of oil and equivalents per day, only a fractional increase. But Shell said production of oil, which is more lucrative, was up 3 percent while natural gas production fell 8 percent. The company said oil production has increased in Iraq and the Gulf of Mexico, offsetting declines at aging fields.
Samsung sold 95 million mobile handsets in the quarter and smartphones were close to 80 percent of those sales, Yi said. It sold 8 million tablet PCs. Research firm IDC estimated that Samsung shipped 74.3 million smartphones during the second quarter, down 4 percent from a year earlier, even as the overall smart-
phone market expanded 23 percent. Chinese vendors, Huawei and Lenovo, were the companies that drove growth in global smartphone sales. Samsung was still the world’s largest supplier of smartphones but its global market share fell to 25 percent from 32 percent. The company’s smartphones use Google’s Android operating system. With lower handset sales, Samsung’s profits also took a hit. Samsung’s mobile business recorded 4.4 trillion won in operating profit during the second quarter, the lowest in two years. Previously, Samsung’s mobile business contributed about 70 percent of its overall profit. That fell to about 60 percent in the
second quarter. Analysts said Samsung struggled in developing nations as consumers using handsets powered by the popular Android operating system were more willing to try devices from other brands. Switching between different Android devices has become easier and cheaper than before for consumers, reducing loyalty to one brand. Smartphones have become ubiquitous in developed markets and are becoming so in emerging markets, making it harder to find people who are buying a smartphone for the first time, said Melissa Chau, senior research manager at IDC, a market research firm. “Just staying on Android is not going to keep you in one brand.” That would make it more important for Samsung to develop unique services for its Galaxy phone users or to push use of its own software that does not rely on Google’s Android. Samsung has stumbled in its efforts to make even a small move away from Android. Earlier this week, it delayed the release of the first smartphone powered by Tizen, its own mobile operating system, just two months after announcing a launch date. It did not give a future schedule. For the third quarter, Samsung forecast it would sell more handsets as there is usually higher demand for consumer electronics during that period. But it would also face higher competition. Apple Inc. is expected to release a new iPhone with a larger screen, the key feature in Galaxy phones that helped Samsung lure consumers from the iPhone. “Looking ahead, the second half of 2014 will remain a challenge,” Samsung said in a statement.

Chairman of the Consumer Protection Foundation (YLPK) Bali, Putu Armaya, said the less strict supervision by the officers in the field had kindled many imported food and beverages to enter illegally and be without label in supermarkets. “Necessarily, there is an intensive supervision in the field and provision of severe penalties to distributors and traders who have illegally brought in foods and beverages so that it would result in a deterrent effect. In addition, the supervision by relevant agencies should work together so that it will not overlap,” said Armaya in Denpasar, recently. Meanwhile, based on the existing data, the imported products circulating in Bali were mostly from Australia, Spain, France, Africa, Italy, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the United States. During the period of 2010, the BBPOM found 3,395 imported food products without a distribution permit issued by the joint team of the BBPOM Bali. Advisory Council (Listibya) for the tenure of 2014-2019, Saturday (Jul 26). The regent assessed the presence of the advisory council had been dormant in recent years. With the current situation, its presence was considered very strategic to counteract various negative influences and maintain a variety of arts and cultural regenerations in order to remain sustainable. Suwirta wanted the artists of Klungkung to unite considering he saw the artists of Klungkung often ran individually. Even, many artists were forced to devote their capability to other counties whereas Klungkung had qualified people in the field of the
arts. The new call-up orders follow another day of intensive fighting, in which 116 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were killed. It also coincides with stalled diplomatic efforts to end the war, which has already claimed more than 1,360 Palestinian lives — most of them civilians -- and reduced entire Gaza neighborhoods to rubble. Fifty-six Israeli soldiers and three civilians on the Israeli side have died in the campaign, as Palestinians have fired hundreds of rockets at Israel -- some reaching major cities -- and carried out attacks inside Israel through tunnels beneath the heavily guarded frontier. MALIN, India — Rescue workers and desperate villagers dug through deep mud, rocks and the debris of shattered homes Thursday after a massive landslide buried a remote village in western India, killing at least 24 people and trapping more than 150, authorities said. Two days of torrential rains triggered the landslide early Wednesday, but national rescue personnel could not reach the stricken area in Pune district of Maharashtra state for several hours because of bad roads and debris. Rain was still hampering the effort by Thursday morning. “Everything on the mountain came down,” said Suresh Jadhav, a district official. Alok Avasthy, a National Disaster Response Force commander, said 23 bodies had been recovered. Large crowds of people from nearby villages reached the spot and helped rescuers in moving fallen trees and rocks with their bare hands, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. BEIJING — An outspoken Chinese minority scholar was indicted on separatism charges amid a renewed flare-up of bloody anti-government violence in the country’s far west. The prosecutor’s office in the Xinjiang regional capital of Urumqi announced the indictment of economics professor Ilham Tohti in a brief online statement Wednesday. Tohti was detained in mid-January and later accused of separatism. Through his lawyer, he has firmly rejected accusations of advocating Xinjiang’s independence from China. Such charges almost always end in conviction and a sentence of up to several years in prison. Tohti is widely considered a moderate but vocal proponent of equal rights for the Turkic Uighur (pronounced WEE-gur) ethnic minority in Xinjiang. Many Uighurs say they face repressive cultural and religious policies along with economic disenfranchisement in their homeland. The indictment was condemned by Human Rights Watch, the PEN American Center writers group and others, which warned that squelching moderate Uighur voices could worsen tensions in the region. “The Chinese government appears determined to silence Uighurs like Tohti, who for years has tried to peacefully express Uighurs’ legitimate grievances and advocate peaceful solutions,” said Sophie Richardson, China director at Human Rights Watch. “Demonizing moderates like Tohti won’t bring peace to the region.” Tohti was originally accused of recruiting followers through a website he founded to allegedly manufacture rumors, distort and play-up incidents, spread separatist thoughts, incite ethnic hatred and engage in separatist activities. He is also accused of telling his students that minority Uighurs should emulate Chinese who violently resisted Japanese invaders in World War II, and of teaching them to hate China and seek to overthrow the government.

JAYAPURA - The Indonesian Human Rights Monitor (Imparsial) has expressed hope that the armed group, whose attack led to the death of two policemen in Lanny Jaya District, Papua, on Monday, would be arrested soon. “We deplore the repetition of a shooting incident that has killed two police personnel in Lanny Jaya. We hope the police will soon arrest the shooters and take them to the court,” Executive Director of Imparsial for Jakarta Poengky Indarti said on Wednesday. Indarti expressed hope that the same incident would not happen again. “It should not happen, otherwise civilians and apparatuses will fall victims,” she said. Regional leaders must help police apparatuses for negotiations and create calmness for the public, Indarti remarked. “Security matters are not merely responsibility of the police but also of district heads and governor,” she added. The Papua Regional Police is expected to sharpen its intelligence capacity to carry out early detection in the future, the Imparsial executive director stated. “The Papua Regional Police must coordinate well with intelligence officials in the fields,” she stressed. Two police officers died while two others were wounded and another one still unaccounted for following a shootout with an unknown armed group in the district of Lanny Jaya, Papua, at 12.45 local time on Monday. The two dead officers were Second Brigadier Zulkifli and Second Brigadier Prayoga, while the wounded officers were Second Brigadier Alex Numbery and First Brigadier Helsky Bonyadone. The spokesman of the Papua Police Command, Senior Commissioner Pubjo, had confirmed the incident to Antara on Monday evening, saying that the incident had occurred while the officers were visiting villagers in a community counseling program. They were attacked while conducting the activity, he said. In the meantime, five police officers who were shot by unidentified gunmen in Indawa Village, Lanny Jaya District of Papua, on Monday (July 28), are currently undergoing intensive medical treatment at the National Polices Hospital in Jayapura. The Jayapura National Police Hospitals spokesperson Senior Police Commissary Dr Raymond has confirmed the news of the shootout. One personnel is in a critical condition and is being treated at the National Polices Hospital in Jayapura. “We are still observing and monitoring the current condition of First Brig. (Briptu) Helsky Bonyadone, as the bullet is lodged in his organ,” Raymond stated here on Wednesday. Four police officers who were on duty at the Lanny Jaya police station were also hospitalized but are expected to be released from the hospital in a day or two and will undergo outpatient treatment. The gunshot wounds suffered by the four police personnel were not as serious as that by Brigadier Helsky, so they can be allowed to go home, noted Raymond. The shooting incident took place in the Lanny Jaya police station on Monday (July 28) and was conducted by a group of seven unidentified gunmen, which led to the death of two police officers on the spot. Officer Zulkifli was laid to rest on Tuesday (July 29) at the Waena Kusuma Bangsa National Heroes Cemetery, Jayapura, while Officer Prayoga was buried on Wednesday (July 30) in his hometown in Semarang, Central Java.

NEW YORK — Former NBA Commissioner David Stern praised the NBA’s handling of the Donald Sterling controversy and predicts it will “end well” for the league. Stern says his successor, Adam Silver, has been “forceful” but also “demonstrated a compassionate side” in his reaction to the racist remarks that were made by the Los Angeles Clippers owner. “He’s done great. He has been forceful, he has been reflective, he has been buttoned-down and I think he has also demonstrated a compassionate side as well,” Stern told The Associated Press on Wednesday during a phone interview. “So I think it’s going to end well.” Silver fined Sterling $2.5 million

Sterling’s wife, Shelly, later agreed to sell the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for a record $2 billion, a transaction the league believes will close shortly even as Donald Sterling continues trying to fight in court. Stern retired after 30
years as commissioner in February. He will be enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame next week. During his tenure, Shelly and Donald Sterling faced allegations that they discriminated against tenants based on race in Los Angeles according to a lawsuit filed by U.S.
Department of Justice in 2006. The Sterlings, who at the time owned and managed about 119 apartment buildings or 5,000 apartments throughout Los Angeles County, agreed to settle the suit for $2.725 million. Stern has remained an adviser to the league and remained in frequent contact with Silver, who worked under him since 1992. Silver was the commissioner for less than three months when TMZ released audio of Sterling’s remarks. Silver handed out his punishment days later and has navigated the league as
it tries to oust Sterling, who owned the Clippers franchise even before Stern became commissioner. “Adam has been a part of the fabric of every important decision and event for the last 22 years,” Stern said. “He knows exactly what to do, he’s done mostly everything, and he’s continuing his run as being a terrific manager.” Sterling still has lawsuits against Silver and the league, though his best attempt to block the sale may have slipped away when a Los Angeles judge ruled Monday that Shelly Sterling had the authority to sell the team. That’s a relief to players, some of whom have said they wouldn’t want to play if Sterling is still in the league. New Players Association executive director Michele Roberts said the response to Sterling would likely be on the list of things she would discuss with the players, whose president, Chris Paul, plays for the Clippers. Referees carry a small aerosol can with the spray, used successfully at a World Cup for the first time, to mark the line of the defensive wall and the spot where a free kick is to be taken. It disappears inside a minute. “At the Premier League we are open to developments that enhance the competition, and it was clear from watching the World Cup in Brazil that vanishing spray benefitted referees, players, and all of those who watched the matches,” Scudamore said in a statement. “Having witnessed that, and following consultation with our clubs and the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), we have decided to introduce it in the Premier League and look forward to having it in place for the 2014/15 season.” Former referee Mike Riley, head of the PGMOL officials’ board, said: “As an assessor at the World Cup in Brazil I saw first-hand the benefits of vanishing spray for referees, and for the game as a whole.” The spray, produced in Argentina under the name 915 Fair Play Limit, has already been in use in major South American competitions, the MLS in the United States and FIFA junior tournaments. LONDON - England’s Premier League referees will use vanishing spray at free kicks from this season after officials saw the benefits during the World Cup finals in Brazil, chief executive Richard Scudamore said on Wednesday. Referees carry a small aerosol can with the spray, used successfully at a World Cup for the first time, to mark the line of the defensive wall and the spot where a free kick is to be taken. It disappears inside a minute. “At the Premier League we are open to developments that enhance the competition, and it was clear from watching the World Cup in Brazil that vanishing spray benefitted referees, players, and all of those who watched the matches,” Scudamore said in a statement. “Having witnessed that, and following consultation with our clubs and the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), we have decided to introduce it in the Premier League and look forward to having it in place for the 2014/15 season.” Former referee Mike Riley, head of the PGMOL officials’ board, said: “As an assessor at the World Cup in Brazil I saw first-hand the benefits of vanishing spray for referees, and for the game as a whole.” The spray, produced in Argentina under the name 915 Fair Play Limit, has already been in use in major South American competitions, the MLS in the United States and FIFA junior tournaments. NEW YORK — Former NBA Commissioner David Stern praised the NBA’s handling of the Donald Sterling controversy and predicts it will “end well” for the league. Stern says his successor, Adam Silver, has been “forceful” but also “demonstrated a compassionate side” in his reaction to the racist remarks that were made by the Los Angeles Clippers owner. “He’s done great. He has been forceful, he has been reflective, he has been buttoned-down and I think he has also demonstrated a compassionate side as well,” Stern told The Associated Press on Wednesday during a phone interview. “So I think it’s going to end well.” Silver fined Sterling $2.5 million
and banned him for life after the recorded comments became public. Sterling’s wife, Shelly, later agreed to sell the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for a record $2 billion, a transaction the league believes will close shortly even as Donald Sterling continues trying to fight in court. Stern retired after 30
years as commissioner in February. He will be enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame next week. During his tenure, Shelly and Donald Sterling faced allegations that they discriminated against tenants based on race in Los Angeles according to a lawsuit filed by U.S.
Department of Justice in 2006. The Sterlings, who at the time owned and managed about 119 apartment buildings or 5,000 apartments throughout Los Angeles County, agreed to settle the suit for $2.725 million. Stern has remained an adviser to the league and remained in frequent contact with Silver, who worked under him since 1992. Silver was the commissioner for less than three months when TMZ released audio of Sterling’s remarks. Silver handed out his punishment days later and has navigated the league as
it tries to oust Sterling, who owned the Clippers franchise even before Stern became commissioner. “Adam has been a part of the fabric of every important decision and event for the last 22 years,” Stern said. “He knows exactly what to do, he’s done mostly everything, and he’s continuing his run as being a terrific manager.” Sterling still has lawsuits against Silver and the league, though his best attempt to block the sale may have slipped away when a Los Angeles judge ruled Monday that Shelly Sterling had the authority to sell the team. That’s a relief to players, some of whom have said they wouldn’t want to play if Sterling is still in the league. New Players Association executive director Michele Roberts said the response to Sterling would likely be on the list of things she would discuss with the players, whose president, Chris Paul, plays for the Clippers. JERUSALEM — Israel’s military said Thursday it was calling up another 16,000 reserves, a move that allows it to substantially widen its 23-day campaign against Islamic militants in the Gaza Strip. The new call-up orders follow another day of intensive fighting, in which 116 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were killed. It also coincides with stalled diplomatic efforts to end the war, which has already claimed more than 1,360 Palestinian lives — most of them civilians -- and reduced entire Gaza neighborhoods to rubble. Fifty-six Israeli soldiers and three civilians on the Israeli side have died in the campaign, as Palestinians have fired hundreds of rockets at Israel -- some reaching major cities -- and carried out attacks inside Israel through tunnels beneath the heavily guarded frontier. Israel has now called up a total of 86,000 reserves during the Gaza conflict, which it launched on July 8 to try to end rocket
fire from Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza. An initial aerial campaign was widened into a ground offensive on July 17. MALIN, India — Rescue workers and desperate villagers dug through deep mud, rocks and the debris of shattered homes Thursday after a massive landslide buried a remote village in western India, killing at least 24 people and trapping more than 150, authorities said. Two days of torrential rains triggered the landslide early Wednesday, but national rescue personnel could not reach the stricken area in Pune district of Maharashtra state for several hours because of bad roads and debris. Rain was still hampering the effort by Thursday morning. “Everything on the mountain came down,” said Suresh Jadhav, a district official. Alok Avasthy, a National Disaster Response Force commander, said 23 bodies had been recovered. Large crowds of people from nearby villages reached the spot and helped rescuers in moving fallen trees and rocks with their bare hands, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. With 70 homes buried and reports of another 158 hit by the landslide, rescuers anticipated more dead in the village, home to 704 people in the foothills of the Sahyadri Mountains. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned the loss of lives and said all possible efforts must be made to help the victims, according to a statement from his office. He sent Home Minister Rajnath Singh to the disaster area. About 250 disaster response workers were in the area assisting local police and medical teams who began clearing the debris. At least 100 ambulances were also sent, Jadhav said. “It is a small village and this happened very suddenly,” local legislator Dilip Walse Patil told CNN-IBN TV network. One local commissioner, Prabhakar Deshmukh, said earlier that more than 150 people could be trapped. BEIJING — An outspoken Chinese minority scholar was indicted on separatism charges amid a renewed flare-up of bloody anti-government violence in the country’s far west. The prosecutor’s office in the Xinjiang regional capital of Urumqi announced the indictment of economics professor Ilham Tohti in a brief online statement Wednesday. Tohti was detained in mid-January and later accused of separatism. Through his lawyer, he has firmly rejected accusations of advocating Xinjiang’s independence from China. Such charges almost always end in conviction and a sentence of up to several years in prison. Tohti is widely considered a moderate but vocal proponent of equal rights for the Turkic Uighur (pronounced WEE-gur) ethnic minority in Xinjiang. Many Uighurs say they face repressive cultural and religious policies along with economic disenfranchisement in their homeland. The indictment was condemned by Human Rights Watch, the PEN American Center writers group and others, which warned that squelching moderate Uighur voices could worsen tensions in the region. “The Chinese government appears determined to silence Uighurs like Tohti, who for years has tried to peacefully express Uighurs’ legitimate grievances and advocate peaceful solutions,” said Sophie Richardson, China director at Human Rights Watch. “Demonizing moderates like Tohti won’t bring peace to the region.” Tohti was originally accused of recruiting followers through a website he founded to allegedly manufacture rumors, distort and play-up incidents, spread separatist thoughts, incite ethnic hatred and engage in separatist activities. He is also accused of telling his students that minority Uighurs should emulate Chinese who violently resisted Japanese invaders in World War II, and of teaching them to hate China and seek to overthrow the government.

JAYAPURA - The Indonesian Human Rights Monitor (Imparsial) has expressed hope that the armed group, whose attack led to the death of two policemen in Lanny Jaya District, Papua, on Monday, would be arrested soon. “We deplore the repetition of a shooting incident that has killed two police personnel in Lanny Jaya. We hope the police will soon arrest the shooters and take them to the court,” Executive Director of Imparsial for Jakarta Poengky Indarti said on Wednesday. Indarti expressed hope that the same incident would not happen again. “It should not happen, otherwise civilians and apparatuses will fall victims,” she said. Regional leaders must help police apparatuses for negotiations and create calmness for the public, Indarti remarked. “Security matters are not merely responsibility of the police but also of district heads and governor,” she added. The Papua Regional Police is expected to sharpen its intelligence capacity to carry out early detection in the future, the Imparsial executive director stated. “The Papua Regional Police must coordinate well with intelligence officials in the fields,” she stressed. Two police officers died while two others were wounded and another one still unaccounted for following a shootout with an unknown armed group in the district of Lanny Jaya, Papua, at 12.45 local time on Monday. The two dead officers were Second Brigadier Zulkifli and Second Brigadier Prayoga, while the wounded officers were Second Brigadier Alex Numbery and First Brigadier Helsky Bonyadone. The spokesman of the Papua Police Command, Senior Commissioner Pubjo, had confirmed the incident to Antara on Monday evening, saying that the incident had occurred while the officers were visiting villagers in a community counseling program. They were attacked while conducting the activity, he said. In the meantime, five police officers who were shot by unidentified gunmen in Indawa Village, Lanny Jaya District of Papua, on Monday (July 28), are currently undergoing intensive medical treatment at the National Polices Hospital in Jayapura. The Jayapura National Police Hospitals spokesperson Senior Police Commissary Dr Raymond has confirmed the news of the shootout. One personnel is in a critical condition and is being treated at the National Polices Hospital in Jayapura. “We are still observing and monitoring the current condition of First Brig. (Briptu) Helsky Bonyadone, as the bullet is lodged in his organ,” Raymond stated here on Wednesday. Four police officers who were on duty at the Lanny Jaya police station were also hospitalized but are expected to be released from the hospital in a day or two and will undergo outpatient treatment. The gunshot wounds suffered by the four police personnel were not as serious as that by Brigadier Helsky, so they can be allowed to go home, noted Raymond. The shooting incident took place in the Lanny Jaya police station on Monday (July 28) and was conducted by a group of seven unidentified gunmen, which led to the death of two police officers on the spot. Officer Zulkifli was laid to rest on Tuesday (July 29) at the Waena Kusuma Bangsa National Heroes Cemetery, Jayapura, while Officer Prayoga was buried on Wednesday (July 30) in his hometown in Semarang, Central Java.

Samsung profit falls as smartphone sales slow

SEOUL, South Korea — Samsung Electronics Co. reported a bigger-than-expected fall in second quarter profit on Thursday and said it was uncertain if earnings from its handset business would improve in the current quarter. Samsung warned earlier this month that the second quarter would be its worst in two years as rapid growth in smartphone sales had faded. The company particularly struggled to compete in cheap smartphones, currently the fastest growing part of the global smartphone business. Samsung shares dived 4 percent in Seoul. Its net income for the April-June quarter dropped 20 percent to 6.3 trillion won ($6.1 billion) from 7.8 trillion won a year earlier. That was the lowest since the second quarter of 2012. Analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast 6.5 trillion won income. Sales fell 9 percent to 52.4 trillion won while operating profit sank 25 percent to 7.2 trillion won, in line with Samsung’s guidance
earlier this month. Robert Yi, head of investor relations, told a conference call that Samsung had higher marketing expenses as competition increased in mid- to low-end smartphones and because it tried to clear old inventory before the release of updated smartphone models in the fall. Tablet computer sales also fell, he said, citing weak overall demand.

GENEVA - Switzerland’s central bank is reporting a profit of 16.1 billion Swiss francs ($17.7 billion) for the first half of the year, a big turnaround from its loss of 9 billion francs for 2013. The Swiss National Bank says the profit in its half-year results is largely based on gains in the gold, foreign exchange and capital markets.
The central bank said Thursday that net profit on foreign currency positions stood at 12.6 billion francs while its gold holdings gained 3.5 billion francs in value. In January, the bank reported that its 2013 results included a loss of 15 billion francs in the value of its gold holdings, but that was partly offset by gains in foreign currency and from selling its stabilization fund that bailed out Swiss bank UBS AG.

AMSTERDAM — Royal Dutch Shell PLC, Europe’s largest oil company, says second quarter earnings rose on higher production and higher selling prices for oil, and fewer one-time charges. Net profit was $5.31 billion, up from $1.74 billion in the same period a year earlier. Shell booked net one-time charges of $979 million in the quarter, down
from $2.21 billion in the second quarter of 2013. The Anglo-Dutch company produced 3.08 million barrels of oil and equivalents per day, only a fractional increase. But Shell said production of oil, which is more lucrative, was up 3 percent while natural gas production fell 8 percent. The company said oil production has increased in Iraq and the Gulf of Mexico, offsetting declines at aging fields.
Samsung sold 95 million mobile handsets in the quarter and smartphones were close to 80 percent of those sales, Yi said. It sold 8 million tablet PCs. Research firm IDC estimated that Samsung shipped 74.3 million smartphones during the second quarter, down 4 percent from a year earlier, even as the overall smart-
phone market expanded 23 percent. Chinese vendors, Huawei and Lenovo, were the companies that drove growth in global smartphone sales. Samsung was still the world’s largest supplier of smartphones but its global market share fell to 25 percent from 32 percent. The company’s smartphones use Google’s Android operating system. With lower handset sales, Samsung’s profits also took a hit. Samsung’s mobile business recorded 4.4 trillion won in operating profit during the second quarter, the lowest in two years. Previously, Samsung’s mobile business contributed about 70 percent of its overall profit. That fell to about 60 percent in the
second quarter. Analysts said Samsung struggled in developing nations as consumers using handsets powered by the popular Android operating system were more willing to try devices from other brands. Switching between different Android devices has become easier and cheaper than before for consumers, reducing loyalty to one brand. Smartphones have become ubiquitous in developed markets and are becoming so in emerging markets, making it harder to find people who are buying a smartphone for the first time, said Melissa Chau, senior research manager at IDC, a market research firm. “Just staying on Android is not going to keep you in one brand.” That would make it more important for Samsung to develop unique services for its Galaxy phone users or to push use of its own software that does not rely on Google’s Android. Samsung has stumbled in its efforts to make even a small move away from Android. Earlier this week, it delayed the release of the first smartphone powered by Tizen, its own mobile operating system, just two months after announcing a launch date. It did not give a future schedule. For the third quarter, Samsung forecast it would sell more handsets as there is usually higher demand for consumer electronics during that period. But it would also face higher competition. Apple Inc. is expected to release a new iPhone with a larger screen, the key feature in Galaxy phones that helped Samsung lure consumers from the iPhone. “Looking ahead, the second half of 2014 will remain a challenge,” Samsung said in a statement.

Meanwhile, based on the existing data, the imported products circulating in Bali were mostly from Australia, Spain, France, Africa, Italy, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the United States. During the period of 2010, the BBPOM found 3,395 imported food products without a distribution permit issued by the joint team of the BBPOM Bali. The damage happens from the faucet in the sink to the blockage in the water drains. Not only that, some damaged toilets sometimes exude bad odor. For instance, such conditions can be found in the toilet owned by the guardhouse of Bangli Municipal Police. According to one of the officers met on Wednesday (Jul 30), the toilet located near the parking area could not be functioned because the discharge channel was
blocked. To repair, some of the officers were forced to make an effort independently. “Formerly, this toilet was also blocked and could not be used. Recently, this can be used again,” he said. The General Affairs Division Head of Bangli Regional Secretariat and Asset, AA Trisnawijaya, when asked for his confirmation did not deny if the condition of most toilets in Bangli County had been damaged. CONAKRY, Guinea — Hundreds of people leaving a late-night rap concert on a beach in Guinea rushed to leave through a single exit, creating a stampede that killed at least 33 people, officials said Wednesday. The victims included children as young as 10, and most bodies brought to an overflowing morgue in the capital were still dressed in bathing suits and swim trunks. Some had bled from their mouths after their small bodies were trampled, causing internal bleeding.
“We are not used to seeing such a large number of bodies at the same time. It’s such a tragedy, these young victims killed in the prime of their life,” said an employee at Donka Hospital where bodies awaited burial. The hospital’s director, Dr. Fatou Sike Camara, announced the toll of 33 deaths. President Alpha Conde went on national television to declare a week of national mourning and promised a full investigation. The capital’s beaches also were ordered closed until further notice. “The president calls on au-
thorities at all levels to take the necessary steps so that this same tragedy never happens again in our country,” his office later said in a statement. More than 700 people had gathered on the beach in Conakry, the capital city, for a concert celebrating the end of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which featured the Guinean rap groups Instinct Killers and Banlieuzart. Witnesses said the stampede happened after the show ended as the large crowd tried to exit through a small gate. Some people fell to the ground and were trampled.

KUTA - Thousands of Idul Fitri holidaymakers crowded the famous Kuta beach in Bali. Since 9 am visitors kept flowing to the beach blocking Jalan Pantai Kuta, the only accessible road to the beach. Main roads around the neighborhood such as Jalan Legia, Jalan Imam Bonjol, Sunset Road, and Seminyak were also crowded causing serious traffic jams. To break the jams, traffic police had to work hard to spread traffic flows through several short cuts. The chief of the Kuta Beach Task Force, Gusti Ngurah Agung Tresna, said the number of visitors had soared drastically. “Just look at Kuta Beach, Legian Beach. They are all very crowded,” he said. A visitor from Jakarta, Halimah, said she was glad she could visit Bali with her extended family. “This is the first time I have come to Bali. I am very glad I could enjoy the Idul Fitri holiday in Bali,” she said. She expressed hope that the beautiful Kuta beach would be maintained and preserved. Hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists meanwhile were seen releasing baby turtles into the sea. “This is done as part of campaign to preserve rare animal species in Bali,” Gusti Ngurah Agung Tresna said. Agung Tresna, who is a Kuta beach turtle preservation campaign volunteer, said around 100 baby turtles from their conservation center in Kuta beach were released that day. He expressed hope that the event could also offer a special attraction to visitors. He said, “Baby turtles must be released into the sea soon after birth, as they immediately need water to survive.” In view of that, he said no exact schedule was given for their release. He remarked that Australia meanwhile had imported 9.33 percent of the products. The products were also exported to Singapore reaching 8.16 percent, Japan 7.48 percent, Thailand 0.36 percent, Germany 3.18 percent, Hong Kong 0.09 percent, France 8.08 percent, Spain 2.03 percent, Britain 13.57 percent, and the rest 25.52 percent were exported to other countries. Siregar however pointed out that the foreign exchange income from the exports of non-knitted garments had dropped by 23.47 percent as compared to US$5.42 million noted in April. In the past five months of this year, Bali’s industry and trade service recorded that the exports of textile and textile products from the region dropped by 12.14 percent in value to only US$53.28 million as compared to US$60.65 million in the same period last year. The exports of textile and textile products contributed 24.78 percent of the total exports from the region that reached US$215.04 million, he added. The income came from the exports of a total of 37.75 million pieces of the products in the first five months of this year, down 2.91 percent from 38.88 million pieces in the same period last year. An exporter, Ni Nyoman Sukerti, stated on a separate occasion that although the exports of garments were not as good as that recorded in previous years, the exports still continued, especially to the US. She added that the exports of garments had dropped from first rank to third and now trail behind the exports of wooden products and fish, including shrimps. As a result of that, she said many garment manufacturers have now started competing in the domestic market.

A moment after getting splashed, the resident from Munduk hamlet, Pengambengan could be evacuated with his motorcycle by the officers at the quay. Chief of Gilimanuk Marine Police, Nyoman Wirya Sucipta, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident if the motorcycle slid into the sea. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The network announced Wednesday that Williams will play the boy who refused to grow up in NBC’s new staging of “Peter Pan Live!” The live telecast of this musical classic will air Dec. 4. The 26-year-old actress-comedian plays Marnie Michaels on HBO’s comedy “Girls,” for which she has recorded several songs. She is the daughter of NBC News anchor Bria n Williams and has also appeared on “The Mindy Project” and “The League.” NBC recently announced that Oscar winner
Christopher Walken will play the villainous pirate Captain Hook. “I have wanted to play Peter Pan since I was about three years old, so this is a dream come true,” said Williams, who added, “What could go wrong in a live televised production with simultaneous flying, sword fighting and singing?” This musical version of “Peter Pan” has a long tradition on NBC. It opened on Broadway in 1954, starring Mary Martin as the flying boy and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook in a pair of Tony Award-winning performances. They reprised their Broadway roles in a live telecast of the production that aired on NBC in 1955, revived a year later with a second live telecast — and then, in 1960, with a new, videotaped “Peter Pan” that again starred Martin and Ritchard. DENPASAR - Evidently the Benoa Bay reclamation plan has been prepared carefully by investor PT Tirta Wahana Bali Internasional (TWBI). In the proposal of the Benoa Bay reclamation sent to the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs and the Bali government, it is mentioned that the Benoa Bay water area to be reclaimed will reach a total area of 810 hectares of the existing water area of 1,400 hectares. The reclamation process is targeted to take 34 months. Under the proposal, PT TWBI mentions that on the 810 hectares reclaimed land area will be focused on the development of tourist destinations and other business supporting activities. Total investment of the reclamation and development of business activities on the reclaimed land reaches IDR 30 trillion. But at least 40 percent of the area will include local content. Chapter IV of the proposal carries the land utilization plan where the 810 hectares of reclaimed land area will be used for some activities. Firstly, the area of commercial development such as retail as well as Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition (MICE) area will
cover an area of 84.2 hectares. Secondly, residential and commercial development or the development of mixed area needs 37.6 hectares. Thirdly, the development of recreational activities such as recreational parks and resorts is allocated with a total of 116.9 hectares. Meanwhile, office area gets the allocation of 29.4 hectares. Fifthly, residential development in the form of standard residential apartments, villas and villas on water will include a total land area of 389.7 hectares. Sixthly, a total of 8.3 hectares will be earmarked for public facilities. Seventhly, the green open space will get the allocation of only 85 hectares or 10.49 percent of the
total 810 hectares of reclaimed land. It means that PT TWBI is not consistent with the commitment aka lying whereas in the introduction of the proposal is mentioned that 40 percent of the land area will be allocated for greening. Eighthly, 8.3 hectares will be intended for Pudut Island and 34 hectares for road infrastructure. Regarding the material of reclamation such as sand will be drawn from the results of dredging in the harbor area experiencing siltation and from the islands around the reclamation site. Similarly, the materials will also be taken from the coastal sand of Sawangan (Nusa Dua), Sekotong (Lombok), a
number of locations in Karangasem and the former dredging materials of groove deepening and seabed at location of the Benoa Bay project. In the introductory chapter, the PT TWBI mentions the reclamation is intended for alternative evacuation venue in case of a tsunami, expanding the area of Bali Island so as to increase tax revenue for the government, both the Land and Property Tax (PBB) and Regionally Generated Revenue (PAD) and increasing the area of green open space. Besides, it is also intended to protect, conserve, rehabilitate, utilize and enrich coastal resources and small islands sustainably. Another purpose is to revitalize the Pudut Island by providing additional social facilities and public facilities. However, the proposal does not give specific discussion about the revitalization of Pudut Island and the responsibility of PT TWBI for the island preservation including the area of mangrove for-
est—Grand Forest Park (Tahura)— around the reclamation site. The proposal gives more highlight to the aspects of Benoa Bay reclamation for the interest of investment and business. Meanwhile, regarding the purpose of business or investment is mentioned that the Benoa Bay reclamation increases the investment value in Bali as much as IDR 30 trillion. On the other hand, in the introductory section of the proposal, PT TWBI mentions the reclamation plan is motivated by the degrading condition of Benoa Bay due to sedimentation and pollution caused by human activities in the form of activities at Benoa Harbor, toll road over the waters as well as a number of other developments located adjacent to the Benoa Bay. Such conditions are considered to threaten the Grand Forest Park denoting a conservation area of the Ministry of Forestry. (kmb29)
