NUSA DUA - Vice President Jusuf Kalla is scheduled to open the two-day 8th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), which will last until December 11, 2015, on Thursday. “The vice president will open the BDF tomorrow at 10 a.m. Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA),” Easti Handayani, the director general for Public Diplomacy Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on Wednesday. A total of 83 countries and three international organizations will be taking part in the annual Asia-Pacific forum. Of the participating countries, three states --- the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor Leste --- will send their ministers, while 16 others will be represented by their deputy ministers. Although it is not being inaugurated by President Joko Widodo, the interest among Asia-Pacific countries to take part in the forum is still high. The democracy forum, which began in 2008, has become a strategic agenda in the region. Australia praises interreligious relations in Bali NUSA DUA - Assistant Minister for Australia’s Multicultural Affairs, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, during a visit to Puja Mandala in Nusa Dua on Wednesday, praised the inter-religious relations in Bali. Concetta who came to Bali to attend the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), said that inter-religious harmony in Bali can be seen by the five different shrines found around Puja Mandala.

She said that Puja Mandala serves as an example of how to maintain diversity in a region, an example that should be emulated by others. “To my knowledge, in Australia, we do not have five

shrines representing five different faiths in any one place, such as at Puja Mandala. This is a good example of how to help promote diversity and multiculturalism,” said Concetta who was

accompanied by the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Paul Grigson. On the occasion, Concetta took time to visit the Ibnu Batutah Mosque located to the left of the Puja Mandala complex, Bunda Maria Segala Bangsa Catholic Church adjacent to the mosque, and Jagad Natha Temple located to the right of the complex. Concetta admired the fact that the architecture of these places of worship use components of Balinese architecture.

NUSA DUA - Indonesia will host the 8th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) from December 10 to 11 in Nusa Dua, Bali under the theme, “Democracy and Effective Public Governance.” The theme for the BDF meeting this year is very relevant to the current situation, not only at the national level but also at the global level, said a statement issued by the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday. According to the Ministry, the issue of development of democracy and governance around the world is now inseparable from the efforts to enhance social welfare.

“Indonesia believes that democracy and good governance effectively encourage comprehensive and holistic development through an approach that promotes transparency, accountability and law enforcement,” said the statement. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Gene in ‘last resort’ antibiotics resistance found in Denmark

COPENHAGEN - A gene that makes bacteria resistant to lastresort antibiotics has been found in Denmark, a new study has shown, after first being identified by researchers in China. Scientists had warned on November 19 of a gene -- found in southern China -- called MCR-1 that makes bacteria resistant to a class of antibiotics, known as polymyxins, used to fight superbugs. “Bacteria with the same resistance gene have now also been

found in Denmark,” the Technical University of Denmark said in a statement on the results of a study published late last week. Using a Danish database of bacterial DNA samples, the researchers found the gene in a patient who suffered from a blood infection in 2015,

and in five samples of imported poultry from between 2012 and 2014. The food had been imported “via Germany but if that is the origin we don’t know yet”, Professor Frank Moller Aarestrup, a microbiologist at the university, told AFP on Tuesday. The find was “very concerning”, said Robert Forest of Statens Serum Insitut, a Ministry of Health institute tasked with surveying and controlling infectious diseases.

“But because the gene has only been found in one patient and the oldest finds in food date back to 2012, it’s not a matter of an urgently critical situation,” he said in a statement. In Denmark, the gene has so far only been found in bacteria that can be treated with other types of antibiotics. Scientists warned in November that the new superbugs could erase nearly a century of antibiotic pro-

tection against killer diseases borne by common germs such as E. coli. The gene -- detected in common but deadly bacteria such as E. coli and K. pneumoniae, which causes pneumonia and blood disease -effectively makes these bacteria invincible. “These are extremely worrying results,” said Jian-Hua Liu, a professor at Southern Agricultural University in Guangzhou. WASHINGTON — Hair loss is one of the most despised side effects of chemotherapy, and now breast cancer patients are getting a new way to save their locks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it would allow marketing of the DigniCap to chill patients’ scalps — using a cap connected to a cooling machine — as they receive chemo. A study found it significantly reduced hair loss. The near-freezing temperature is supposed to reduce blood flow in the scalp, making it harder for cancer-fighting drugs to reach and harm hair follicles. It’s an idea that’s been around for decades, and several versions of cold caps are sold around the world. But the DigniCap, made by Sweden’s Dignitana AB, is the first to pass FDA scrutiny. (ap)

“The export earning, however, was lower compared with the same month last year when fish and shrimp exports were valued at US$120.15 million,” head of the regional office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Panasunan Siregar said. Panusunan said fish and shrimp exports accounted for 17.8 percent to the total export earning that reached US$48.64 million in October of the province. Fish and shrimp were one of five major export commodities from Bali. The other four are gold jewelry, garments, timber and timber products, and furniture and house illumination. Panasunan Siregar said fish and shrimp are exported mainly to the United States, Japan, and Taiwan. Head of the provincial marine and fishery office Made Gunaja said Bali’s production of sea fish and shrimps is expected to increase in 2015. In 20145, Bali’s production of sea fish and shrimp reached 118,241 tons, up significantly from 103,591 tons in the previous year. (ant)

BANGLI - Bangli District is not only well known for its abundant agricultural products whose marketing has penetrated the regions outside Bali. The timber industry is also increasingly gaining ground, particularly production of shrine crafts which is evident by the bustle of the crafters, as one enters the town of Bangli going towards Kintamani. At a glance, the crafters and sellers appear to not be facing any difficulties, however behind the smiles they are facing some serious setbacks. I Nyoman Dengol owns a shrine craft venture at Sidembunut hamlet, Cempaga, and says that in the ten years that he has been running his business he has seen the ups and downs of the trade and he considers this part of life. Currently, the most serious problem is the increasingly high prices of the raw materials that seem to have gotten out of control and the price of the crafts do not reflects this condition. Champak lumber for example has gone up

He explained that he has yet to be able to access low interest credit because he lacks information. “Actually I would like to apply for credit, but I do not know how to go about doing so,” he said. GIANYAR - The government of Gianyar is organizing another Archipelagic Mask Festival for 2016 that will involve artists from 24 of Indonesia’s provinces and also from a few other Asian countries. Plans and preparations for the festival will start in the new year.

HOUSTON — Pipeline operator Kinder Morgan Inc. slashed its quarterly dividend by 75 percent Tuesday, saying that doing so would allow it to fund expansion, eliminate the need to tap equity markets and maintain its credit rating. The Houston-based company said its board approved a cut to its quarterly dividend to 12.5 cents per share from 51 cents per share, starting with the fourth-quarter payment payable in February.

China inflation edges higher as food costs rise BEIJING — China’s consumer inflation rebounded in November after vegetable prices jumped due to unusually frigid winter. Toyota starts sales of 4th generation Prius hybrid

TOKYO — Toyota said Wednesday it expects annual sales of its newly-released fourth generation Prius hybrid to reach as many as 350,000 vehicles despite a big drop in oil prices making traditional gasoline cars cheap to run. The automaker is promising mileage of 40.8 kilometers a liter (96 miles a gallon) in Japan for its latest version of the gasolineelectric car, better than the 40 kpm initially projected. Mileage tests and driving conditions differ by nation. Toyota Motor Corp. has promised about 52 mpg in the U.S. Executive Vice President Mitsuhisa Kato told reporters at a Tokyo showroom, that the latest Prius made fewer driving experience compromises to achieve better mileage. “There is nothing you feel you are suffering through to get that mileage,” he said. Improvements in the battery, engine, wind resistance and weight are contributing to the improved performance, according to Toyota.

The new Prius also got a design makeover, although reaction has been divided. Toyota has sold about 4 million Prius vehicles globally, making it the world’s top-selling hybrid, but its popularity is mostly limited to the U.S. and Japan. Toyota faced skepticism when it first introduced Prius in 1997. “In my mind, there is no doubt that this new model will be well received,” said Max Zanan, chief executive of IDDS Group, a New York-based consulting company that specializes in auto retailing. “It will continue to set the pace for, and dominate, the global hybrid car market.” A hybrid switches back and forth between a gasoline engine and an electric motor to deliver

an efficient ride and reduce emissions. They deliver more of a perk in stop-and-go city driving than freeway driving. Japan sales started Wednesday, and are set for January in North America and February om Europe. Toyota says it’s expecting to sell 12,000 Prius cars a month in Japan, with projected annual global sales at 300,000 to 350,000 vehicles. Kato brushed off questions about how the recent drop in oil prices may negatively affect sales. Energy and ecological worries are here to stay, he said. Japan pre-orders total 60,000 vehicles, and many of the buyers will have to wait several months for their Prius to arrive, as production can’t keep up. Prices in Japan, also announced Wednesday, are higher than the previous model’s, starting at 2.4 million yen ($20,000), up from 2.2 million yen. Overseas prices have not yet been announced. (ap)

According to the Head of the Gianyar Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wijana, this years’ Archipelagic Mask Festival that took place between December 5th and December 7th at Wantilan Taman Pule in Mas Village was very successful. Artists showcased the cultural richness of the archipelago and provided inspiration and knowledge about masks to the public. Nevertheless, he admitted that the the organization of festival could be improved in the future. This was the first year that the festival was eld and only involved artists from 6 different regions due to the short time in which the festival was organized. “In 2016, we be holding the festival for the second time and plan to involve artists from more regions that have mask arts,” he said.

Wijana said in order to ensure the participation of the mask artists from around Indonesia and also from some other places in Asia, the Gianyar Culture Agency will start preparations well in advance including matters concerning the budget for the festival and will be sending out invitations to the artists at the beginning of 2016. Both Papua and Kalimantan are amongst the areas that will be invited, as they both have a very rich mask art heritage that is little known to the general public. “The mask artists are invited to display the distinctive characteristic masks of each region in Indonesia as a way to highlight the diversity of masks in Indonesia. Fear that Taman Temple at Bubunan will be destroyed by floods

The Puluran River is too shallow so the water cannot flow SINGARAJA - This years rainy season that started late, has meant that the paddy filed irrigation channel near Taman Temple, Buburan has become clogged forcing farmers to suspend their plowing activities.

Many farmers’ tractors have become stranded in the middle of Bubunan’s 6,000 square meters of paddy fields. Bubunan village is known for producing high quality rice grain that contributes to the District of Buleleng’s food ssel-sufficiency.

According to local farmer, Made Sarjana, the rain that suddenly poored down over several days, flooded the paddy fields and then the rainwater stagnated because the irrigation channels were not functioning properly. “Water could not flow as

smoothly as usual through the irrigation channels, so tractors had to contend with deep muddy water,” said Sarjana on Tuesday (Dec. 8). Sarjana explained that because Puluran River (Taman Hamalet) is very shallow, the overflowing water just pools instead of flowing. In fact the area is flooded every year because this issue has not received serious attention. “You see if there are heavy rains, the water for the river quickly overflows into the irrigation channels of the paddy fields and the Taman Temple (one of a trinity) gets flooded too,” he said. Headman of Bubunan, Ketut Sudarmawan Duniaji, explained that the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS) has already dredged some parts of the Puluran River bed but that they have not had a chance to dredge all the shallow area. What makes matter worse for the villagers is that many peoples homes dare not equipped with revetments, so they end up gutted flooded too. “The whole river has not been dredged yet so there are still some shallow areas,” he confessed. Duniaji said that many residents have already agreed to dismantle the buildings that do not have revetments along about 1 kilometre of the river. But he added that he did not know where to submit a proposal requesting funding for the construction of revetments and dredging. “We remain unable to determine which areas fall under the authority of the district or other bodies. We are asking for guidance about where we should apply for assistance and what is the solution for preventing Taman Temple for being destroyed by floods,” stated Duniaji. (kmb34)

Greece starts removing stranded migrants at Macedonia border

IDOMENI, Greece - Greek police started removing hundreds of migrants stranded on the Greek-Macedonian border and blocking rail traffic on Wednesday, a police official and a Reuters eyewitness said. Some 1,200 people mostly from Pakistan, Morocco and Iran, were stuck near the northern Greek town of Idomeni, demanding to cross into Macedonia to reach northern Europe after non-EU Balkan states began filtering migrants by nationality. The police official said the migrants would be taken to Athens on buses and will be accommodated in migration centers before being sent back to their home countries. Hundreds of thousands of people

streamed into Europe this year, mostly through Greece, but Balkan states began blocking passage last month to all but Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans, who are considered as refugees because they are fleeing war zones. Clashes have flared in the last two weeks between police and stranded migrants blocking the Greek-Macedonian crossing for refugees and the railway line running between the two countries. A Moroccan man was electrocuted to death on the line last week.

Macedonia has erected a metal fence to keep others out and plans to extend it to cover more than 40 km (25 miles) of the border. More than 600,000 people have arrived in Greece this year by making the short but perilous journey by boat or rubber dinghy from Turkey to outlying islands. Thousands more have drowned. In another such incident, Greek coastguard recovered the bodies of 11 people, including five children, after their wooden boat sank off the island of Farmakonisi in the early hours on Wednesday, a coastguard official said. Georgia executes man for 1992 killing of his mother’s friend

JACKSON, Ga. — A Georgia man convicted of forging checks belonging to his mother’s friend and killing the man after he demanded money back was executed, correction officials said. The execution of Brian Keith Terrell, 47, was carried out at earlier Wednesday at the state prison in Jackson, the Department of Corrections said. Terrell was convicted of murder in the June 1992 killing of 70-year-old John Watson of Covington, a community east of Atlanta. Terrell was on parole in 1992 when he stole 10 of Watson’s checks and signed his name on some, prosecutors said. Watson told police about the theft but asked them not to pursue charges if most of the money was returned. The day he was to return the money, according to the prosecutors, Terrell had his cousin drive him to Watson’s house where he shot Watson multiple times. Terrell’s lawyers had said their client was innocent. They argued that no physical evidence connected Terrell to the killing and that prosecutors had used false and misleading testimony to secure the conviction that drew the death penalty. State lawyers countered that the courts had already heard and rejected the defense arguments. The U.S. Supreme Court, without explanation, denied a request for a stay about four hours after the 7 p.m. scheduled execution time. On Monday, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles had denied Terrell’s request for clemency. A state court on Tuesday dismissed a complaint in which Terrell claimed innocence, and the state Supreme Court declined to halt the execution.

Ron Dennis is in the process of making major off-track changes he hopes will allow McLaren to compete with Formula 1 rivals Mercedes and Ferrari. Although Dennis has refused to divulge details, Autosport understands the 67-year-old has been working on attracting additional investment into the company. At present McLaren Technology Group CEO Dennis has a 25 per cent shareholding, along with Mansour Ojjeh, while the Bahrain sovereign wealth fund, Mumtalakat, holds the remaining 50 per cent. In an effort to revitalise the business, Dennis has been in discussions with potential investors in recent months, notably from China. Asked about the current shareholding, Dennis said: “There has always been movements in equity over the history of McLaren, and there is nothing particularly unusual about that. “Our objective as shareholders is always to think about growth. “The process we are going through at the moment is with regard to how we can be bigger, stronger, to build the organisation to match the resources some of the other players have because it’s not easy to race against Mercedes or Ferrari.” The McLaren group’s diversification - into areas such as roadcars, medical, financial, research, analytics - means its F1 team now accounts for just over a third of the business. MADRID — Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 10 goals or more in the group stage of the Champions League, claiming four as Real Madrid routed Malmo 8-0 on Tuesday. Ronaldo reached 11 goals in six games, surpassing the nine scored by Luiz Adriano with Shakhtar Donetsk last season. Ronaldo also scored nine times in the 2013-14 season group stage. As well, Ronaldo set up two goals by Karim Benzema, who scored a hat trick at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Mateo Kovacic also netted. Madrid secured the biggest margin of victory in the Champions League since Liverpool defeated Besiktas also by 8-0 in 2007. The game meant little for Madrid because it had already secured first place in Group A, but the convincing victory helped ease the pressure on coach Rafa Benitez and president Florentino Perez. Fans were still angry at the demoralizing 4-0 home loss to Barcelona in the Spanish league and disqualification from the Copa del Rey because of an ineligible player. “We are very satisfied and happy for all of the Madrid fans who didn’t lose faith in this team,” said Benitez, who was in command of Liverpool when it routed Besiktas in 2007. “This is football, things change week after week. It’s important for us to keep winning.” Ronaldo made life easier for his

coach and president with another remarkable performance, helping Madrid end the group stage with three more points than Paris SaintGermain. “I’m happy that I’ve achieved another record,” said Ronaldo, the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer. “I’m happy with my season so far. His third came after a breakaway midway through the second half. It was the second straight game in which he scored at least two, after a brace in the 4-1 win over Getafe in the Spanish league on Saturday. Those were his first goals since being implicated in a blackmail case in relation to an alleged extortion scam over a sex tape featuring his France teammate Mathieu Valbuena. After one of Ronaldo’s goals, Real Madrid players ran to the bench and embraced Denis Cheryshev, whose appearance in the Copa del Rey last week disqualified the team because he was carrying a one-game suspension from last season. Cheryshev was jeered by Madrid fans on Saturday, but he was loudly applauded on Tuesday when he came on as a substitute with Madrid up 8-0. WOLFSBURG, Germany Manchester United’s 3-2 Champions League defeat at VfL Wolfsburg on Tuesday was difficult to understand, said manager Louis van Gaal after they crashed out in the group stage for the first time since 2011. United went into the game needing a win to guarantee a place in the last 16 but were outplayed for long stretches and, having clawed their way back into the match, conceded a late goal to finish third in Group B and qualify for the Europa League. The irony for a shell-shocked Van Gaal was his team finally found their scoring touch, after two goalless draws in their last three games, but fell apart in defence. “The result is difficult to understand,” the Dutchman told a news conference. “I am happy we have scored and not happy we have two times in two minutes given a goal away. “I have to analyse why that is happening. Normally we are very good in that aspect.” The result will further increase the scrutiny on Van Gaal who has been heavily criticised for a perceived negative style of play. As well as frustrated supporters, there have also been no shortage of pundits willing to put the boot in.

Within minutes of United’s defeat on Tuesday, former United and England defender Rio Ferdinand described their Champions League exit as “embarrassing”. “If you strip it back this squad needs a hard look,” he said on BT Sport. “There is no pace or power. People are looking around at each other rather than saying, ‘I will drag you through’.” That opinion was echoed by Ferdinand’s co-pundit and former United and England team mate Michael Owen who suggested the players Van Gaal had sold over the last 18 months would beat Tuesday’s team. The Dutchman is now likely to reflect that United’s elimination has been largely self-inflicted. When the draw was made, few predicted United would have any problems emerging from a group that also contained CSKA Moscow and PSV Eindhoven but Van Gaal’s men won only two of their six matches, at home to Wolfsburg and CSKA. Ron Dennis is in the process of making major off-track changes he hopes will allow McLaren to compete with Formula 1 rivals Mercedes and Ferrari. Although Dennis has refused to divulge details, Autosport understands the 67-year-old has been working on attracting additional investment into the company. At present McLaren Technology Group CEO Dennis has a 25 per cent shareholding, along with Mansour Ojjeh, while the Bahrain sovereign wealth fund, Mumtalakat, holds the remaining 50 per cent. In an effort to revitalise the business, Dennis has been in discussions with potential investors in recent months, notably from China. Asked about the current shareholding, Dennis said: “There has always been movements in equity over the history of McLaren, and there is nothing particularly unusual about that. “Our objective as shareholders is always to think about growth. “The process we are going through at the moment is with regard to how we can be bigger, stronger, to build the organisation to match the resources some of the other players have because it’s not easy to race against Mercedes or Ferrari.” The McLaren group’s diversification - into areas such as roadcars, medical, financial, research, analytics - means its F1 team now accounts for just over a third of the business. To bring the team back to its former glories, Dennis recognises further off-track efforts are needed, hence his pursuit of other avenues. “The [F1] business model is not attractive in the long term, not least because 110 F1 teams have come and gone since 1966, and we don’t want to be one of those,” said Dennis. “The way to avoid it is you build a broader base that supports a Formula 1 team, which is an important part of the business. “It reflects badly when we are not succeeding, but it is part of our brand and part of our business. “You can achieve growth in two ways in a private company - you take the money you call profit and you invest it in the future. “Or, if you want to move faster than that, you have to find a completely different approach, and that’s been focusing my mind for four months at least, which has been the primary reason why you’ve not seen me at the grands prix. “But complex things take time, and as and when we get there, and if we get there, then we’ll take this giant step for McLaren, and I’ll share it with you.” (rtr)

Greece starts removing stranded migrants at Macedonia border

IDOMENI, Greece - Greek police started removing hundreds of migrants stranded on the Greek-Macedonian border and blocking rail traffic on Wednesday, a police official and a Reuters eyewitness said. Some 1,200 people mostly from Pakistan, Morocco and Iran, were stuck near the northern Greek town of Idomeni, demanding to cross into Macedonia to reach northern Europe after non-EU Balkan states began filtering migrants by nationality. The police official said the migrants would be taken to Athens on buses and will be accommodated in migration centers before being sent back to their home countries. Hundreds of thousands of people

streamed into Europe this year, mostly through Greece, but Balkan states began blocking passage last month to all but Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans, who are considered as refugees because they are fleeing war zones. Clashes have flared in the last two weeks between police and stranded migrants blocking the Greek-Macedonian crossing for refugees and the railway line running between the two countries. A Moroccan man was electrocuted to death on the line last week.

Macedonia has erected a metal fence to keep others out and plans to extend it to cover more than 40 km (25 miles) of the border. More than 600,000 people have arrived in Greece this year by making the short but perilous journey by boat or rubber dinghy from Turkey to outlying islands. Thousands more have drowned. In another such incident, Greek coastguard recovered the bodies of 11 people, including five children, after their wooden boat sank off the island of Farmakonisi in the early hours on Wednesday, a coastguard official said. Georgia executes man for 1992 killing of his mother’s friend

JACKSON, Ga. — A Georgia man convicted of forging checks belonging to his mother’s friend and killing the man after he demanded money back was executed, correction officials said. The execution of Brian Keith Terrell, 47, was carried out at earlier Wednesday at the state prison in Jackson, the Department of Corrections said. Terrell was convicted of murder in the June 1992 killing of 70-year-old John Watson of Covington, a community east of Atlanta. Terrell was on parole in 1992 when he stole 10 of Watson’s checks and signed his name on some, prosecutors said. Watson told police about the theft but asked them not to pursue charges if most of the money was returned. The day he was to return the money, according to the prosecutors, Terrell had his cousin drive him to Watson’s house where he shot Watson multiple times. Terrell’s lawyers had said their client was innocent. They argued that no physical evidence connected Terrell to the killing and that prosecutors had used false and misleading testimony to secure the conviction that drew the death penalty. State lawyers countered that the courts had already heard and rejected the defense arguments. The U.S. Supreme Court, without explanation, denied a request for a stay about four hours after the 7 p.m. scheduled execution time. On Monday, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles had denied Terrell’s request for clemency. A state court on Tuesday dismissed a complaint in which Terrell claimed innocence, and the state Supreme Court declined to halt the execution.

Tangerang - Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo expressed high regard for the legal process that led to the delay in elections in five regions. The implementation of the regional head elections (pilkada) has been delayed ahead of the voting on Wednesday in Central Kalimantan, Pematangsiantar in North Sumatra, Simalungung district in North Suma-

tra, Manado in North Sulawesi, and Fak-Fak district in West Papua. The Houston-based company said its board approved a cut to its quarterly dividend to 12.5 cents per share from 51 cents per share, starting with the fourth-quarter payment payable in February.

China inflation edges higher as food costs rise BEIJING — China’s consumer inflation rebounded in November after vegetable prices jumped due to unusually frigid winter. the slowing economy. “Today’s inflation data support our view that domestic price pressures are on the rise,” said Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics in a report. “Looking ahead, we expect inflation to rise going into 2016.” Also in November, wholesale prices measured as goods left the factory fell for a 44th straight month, declining by 5.9 percent from a year earlier. Toyota starts sales of 4th generation Prius hybrid

TOKYO — Toyota said Wednesday it expects annual sales of its newly-released fourth generation Prius hybrid to reach as many as 350,000 vehicles despite a big drop in oil prices making traditional gasoline cars cheap to run. The automaker is promising mileage of 40.8 kilometers a liter (96 miles a gallon) in Japan for its latest version of the gasolineelectric car, better than the 40 kpm initially projected. Mileage tests and driving conditions differ by nation. Toyota Motor Corp. has promised about 52 mpg in the U.S. Executive Vice President Mitsuhisa Kato told reporters at a Tokyo showroom, that the latest Prius made fewer driving experience compromises to achieve better mileage. “There is nothing you feel you are suffering through to get that mileage,” he said. Improvements in the battery, engine, wind resistance and weight are contributing to the improved performance, according to Toyota.

The new Prius also got a design makeover, although reaction has been divided. Toyota has sold about 4 million Prius vehicles globally, making it the world’s top-selling hybrid, but its popularity is mostly limited to the U.S. and Japan. Toyota faced skepticism when it first introduced Prius in 1997. “In my mind, there is no doubt that this new model will be well received,” said Max Zanan, chief executive of IDDS Group, a New York-based consulting company that specializes in auto retailing. “It will continue to set the pace for, and dominate, the global hybrid car market.” A hybrid switches back and forth between a gasoline engine and an electric motor to deliver

an efficient ride and reduce emissions. They deliver more of a perk in stop-and-go city driving than freeway driving. Japan sales started Wednesday, and are set for January in North America and February om Europe. Toyota says it’s expecting to sell 12,000 Prius cars a month in Japan, with projected annual global sales at 300,000 to 350,000 vehicles. Kato brushed off questions about how the recent drop in oil prices may negatively affect sales. Energy and ecological worries are here to stay, he said. Japan pre-orders total 60,000 vehicles, and many of the buyers will have to wait several months for their Prius to arrive, as production can’t keep up. Prices in Japan, also announced Wednesday, are higher than the previous model’s, starting at 2.4 million yen ($20,000), up from 2.2 million yen. Overseas prices have not yet been announced. (ap)

According to the Head of the Gianyar Culture Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Wijana, this years’ Archipelagic Mask Festival that took place between December 5th and December 7th at Wantilan Taman Pule in Mas Village was very successful. Artists showcased the cultural richness of the archipelago and provided inspiration and knowledge about masks to the public. Nevertheless, he admitted that the the organization of festival could be improved in the future. This was the first year that the festival was eld and only involved artists from 6 different regions due to the short time in which the festival was organized. “In 2016, we be holding the festival for the second time and plan to involve artists from more regions that have mask arts,” he said.

Wijana said in order to ensure the participation of the mask artists from around Indonesia and also from some other places in Asia, the Gianyar Culture Agency will start preparations well in advance including matters concerning the budget for the festival and will be sending out invitations to the artists at the beginning of 2016. Both Papua and Kalimantan are amongst the areas that will be invited, as they both have a very rich mask art heritage that is little known to the general public. “The mask artists are invited to display the distinctive characteristic masks of each region in Indonesia as a way to highlight the diversity of masks in Indonesia. Fear that Taman Temple at Bubunan will be destroyed by floods

The Puluran River is too shallow so the water cannot flow SINGARAJA - This years rainy season that started late, has meant that the paddy filed irrigation channel near Taman Temple, Buburan has become clogged forcing farmers to suspend their plowing activities.

Many farmers’ tractors have become stranded in the middle of Bubunan’s 6,000 square meters of paddy fields. Bubunan village is known for producing high quality rice grain that contributes to the District of Buleleng’s food ssel-sufficiency.

According to local farmer, Made Sarjana, the rain that suddenly poored down over several days, flooded the paddy fields and then the rainwater stagnated because the irrigation channels were not functioning properly. “Water could not flow as

smoothly as usual through the irrigation channels, so tractors had to contend with deep muddy water,” said Sarjana on Tuesday (Dec. 8). Sarjana explained that because Puluran River (Taman Hamalet) is very shallow, the overflowing water just pools instead of flowing. In fact the area is flooded every year because this issue has not received serious attention. “You see if there are heavy rains, the water for the river quickly overflows into the irrigation channels of the paddy fields and the Taman Temple (one of a trinity) gets flooded too,” he said. Headman of Bubunan, Ketut Sudarmawan Duniaji, explained that the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS) has already dredged some parts of the Puluran River bed but that they have not had a chance to dredge all the shallow area. What makes matter worse for the villagers is that many peoples homes dare not equipped with revetments, so they end up gutted flooded too. “The whole river has not been dredged yet so there are still some shallow areas,” he confessed. Duniaji said that many residents have already agreed to dismantle the buildings that do not have revetments along about 1 kilometre of the river. But he added that he did not know where to submit a proposal requesting funding for the construction of revetments and dredging. “We remain unable to determine which areas fall under the authority of the district or other bodies. We are asking for guidance about where we should apply for assistance and what is the solution for preventing Taman Temple for being destroyed by floods,” stated Duniaji. (kmb34)

AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan has disputed a U.N. report that 12,000 Syrian refugees have amassed in a remote desert area on the kingdom’s border, waiting to be let in. Government spokesman Mohammed Momani said late Tuesday that “the number is exaggerated,” but did not give an alternative figure. The U.N. refugee agency says the number of refugees stranded on the border tripled to 12,000 since November because of intensifying fighting in Syria. It has appealed to Jordan to allow them to enter, saying lives are at risk. Jordan hosts 630,000 of the more than 4 million Syrian refugees. Gene in ‘last resort’ antibiotics resistance found in Denmark

COPENHAGEN - A gene that makes bacteria resistant to lastresort antibiotics has been found in Denmark, a new study has shown, after first being identified by researchers in China. Scientists had warned on November 19 of a gene -- found in southern China -- called MCR-1 that makes bacteria resistant to a class of antibiotics, known as polymyxins, used to fight superbugs. “Bacteria with the same resistance gene have now also been

found in Denmark,” the Technical University of Denmark said in a statement on the results of a study published late last week. Using a Danish database of bacterial DNA samples, the researchers found the gene in a patient who suffered from a blood infection in 2015,

and in five samples of imported poultry from between 2012 and 2014. The food had been imported “via Germany but if that is the origin we don’t know yet”, Professor Frank Moller Aarestrup, a microbiologist at the university, told AFP on Tuesday. The find was “very concerning”, said Robert Forest of Statens Serum Insitut, a Ministry of Health institute tasked with surveying and controlling infectious diseases.

“But because the gene has only been found in one patient and the oldest finds in food date back to 2012, it’s not a matter of an urgently critical situation,” he said in a statement. In Denmark, the gene has so far only been found in bacteria that can be treated with other types of antibiotics. Scientists warned in November that the new superbugs could erase nearly a century of antibiotic pro-

tection against killer diseases borne by common germs such as E. coli. WASHINGTON — Hair loss is one of the most despised side effects of chemotherapy, and now breast cancer patients are getting a new way to save their locks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it would allow marketing of the DigniCap to chill patients’ scalps — using a cap connected to a cooling machine — as they receive chemo. A study found it significantly reduced hair loss. The near-freezing temperature is supposed to reduce blood flow in the scalp, making it harder for cancer-fighting drugs to reach and harm hair follicles. It’s an idea that’s been around for decades, and several versions of cold caps are sold around the world. But the DigniCap, made by Sweden’s Dignitana AB, is the first to pass FDA scrutiny. (ap)

“The export earning, however, was lower compared with the same month last year when fish and shrimp exports were valued at US$120.15 million,” head of the regional office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Panasunan Siregar said. Panusunan said fish and shrimp exports accounted for 17.8 percent to the total export earning that reached US$48.64 million in October of the province. Fish and shrimp were one of five major export commodities from Bali. The other four are gold jewelry, garments, timber and timber products, and furniture and house illumination. Panasunan Siregar said fish and shrimp are exported mainly to the United States, Japan, and Taiwan. Head of the provincial marine and fishery office Made Gunaja said Bali’s production of sea fish and shrimps is expected to increase in 2015. At a glance, the crafters and sellers appear to not be facing any difficulties, however behind the smiles they are facing some serious setbacks. I Nyoman Dengol owns a shrine craft venture at Sidembunut hamlet, Cempaga, and says that in the ten years that he has been running his business he has seen the ups and downs of the trade and he considers this part of life. Currently, the most serious problem is the increasingly high prices of the raw materials that seem to have gotten out of control and the price of the crafts do not reflects this condition. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NUSA DUA - Vice President Jusuf Kalla is scheduled to open the two-day 8th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), which will last until December 11, 2015, on Thursday. “The vice president will open the BDF tomorrow at 10 a.m. Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA),” Easti Handayani, the director general for Public Diplomacy Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on Wednesday. A total of 83 countries and three international organizations will be taking part in the annual Asia-Pacific forum. Of the participating countries, three states --- the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor Leste --- will send their ministers, while 16 others will be represented by their deputy ministers. Although it is not being inaugurated by President Joko Widodo, the interest among Asia-Pacific countries to take part in the forum is still high. The democracy forum, which began in 2008, has become a strategic agenda in the region. The annual meeting will be themed “Democracy and Effective Public Governance,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted in a press release published on its official website on Tuesday. The ministry said the theme was relevant to the current developments not only at the national but also the global level. Democracy is inseparable from public governance to promote public welfare.

LOS ANGELES — When speaking about “Star Wars,” there are few topics that inspire a twinkle in Harrison Ford’s eyes. The 73-year-old actor is matter-of-fact about almost everything involving the sci-fi series’ latest episode — from his reunion with Carrie Fisher (“It was no big deal.”) to the franchise’s unwavering popularity (“For me, it’s old news.”). Australia praises interreligious relations in Bali NUSA DUA - Assistant Minister for Australia’s Multicultural Affairs, Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, during a visit to Puja Mandala in Nusa Dua on Wednesday, praised the inter-religious relations in Bali. Concetta who came to Bali to attend the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), said that inter-religious harmony in Bali can be seen by the five different shrines found around Puja Mandala.

She said that Puja Mandala serves as an example of how to maintain diversity in a region, an example that should be emulated by others. “To my knowledge, in Australia, we do not have five

shrines representing five different faiths in any one place, such as at Puja Mandala. This is a good example of how to help promote diversity and multiculturalism,” said Concetta who was

accompanied by the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Paul Grigson. On the occasion, Concetta took time to visit the Ibnu Batutah Mosque located to the left of the Puja Mandala complex, Bunda Maria Segala Bangsa Catholic Church adjacent to the mosque, and Jagad Natha Temple located to the right of the complex. Concetta admired the fact that the architecture of these places of worship use components of Balinese architecture.

Concetta went on to say that during the Bali Democracy Forum, which will be held between Thursday (10/12) and Friday (11/12), Australia will be making a presentation about their experience in promoting multiculturalism. She said that like Indonesia, Australia also has ethnic diversity. “In Australia there are some 300 spoken languages, and many tribes that interacted peacefully. We hope that by sharing Australia’s ex-

perience as a nation that is running peacefully, this experience can serve as a good example for others,” said Concetta.
