At first the both children came up with a diagnosis of pneumonia or lung infection. However, after further investigation by medical team in Sanglah Hospital, it was known that both patients had contact with chickens that died suddenly and they experienced a clinical symptom in accordance with the indication of bird flu. Director of Medical and Nursing Services of Sanglah Hospital, A.A.N. Jayakusuma, when giving a press conference on Saturday (Oct 8) said that having known the disease history of the victims, the bird flu countermeasure team of Sanglah Hospital immediately took action. “We immediately conducted an examination and laboratory investigation to ascertain whether the virus infected both victims is H5N1 or the virus causing bird flu. The laboratory tests carried out in Sanglah Hospital found if the results are positive,” said Jayakusuma. Despite the preliminary result declared positive, to affirm them as bird flu patients should be confirmed with three different laboratory tests, namely from Sanglah Hospital, Medical Faculty of Udayana University as well as Research and Development. According to Jayakusuma, the samples of both patients had been submitted for the examination to the Laboratory of Research and Development in Jakarta on Saturday (Oct 8) and were expected the result from the Medical Faculty of Udayana University could be issued immediately. ”If the three results declared positive, it means the patients can be stated positive to bird flu. Australia will do all it can to bring home a 14-year-old boy arrested in Indonesia for allegedly carrying marijuana, Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said. The boy was allegedly in possession of a small amount of the drug when he was picked up on the resort island of Bali on Tuesday and could face a lengthy jail term if convicted.
Rudd said consular officials were in close contact with Indonesian authorities and he had told Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs to make the matter its top priority. “I think if you put yourself in the position of being a mum or a dad with a 14-year-old who’s got themselves caught up in this situation your heart would go out to the parents,” Rudd said late Thursday. “My heart goes out to the par-
ents. I’m sure many Australians would feel exactly the same and we will do all within our power to support them and to get this young fella back home.” Indonesian police sources have told AFP the teenager was arrested on Tuesday with 6.9 grams of marijuana as he returned to his hotel from a massage in the Kuta tourist area. Australian media reported that the boy told police the dealer said he had not eaten for a day and needed
money. He paid 250,000 rupiah ($25) for the drugs, reports said. Children face the same courts as adults in Indonesia and are often imprisoned with adults although there is a separate children’s cell in Bali’s Kerobokan jail. Several Australians have been arrested for drug possession on Bali island in recent years, while two traffickers are on death row and six serving life sentences in Kerobokan.

SANAA, Yemen — President Ali Abdullah Saleh made vague comments Saturday that he is willing to leave power in his first major speech since returning Yemen, but he gave no concrete plan for the future of the country. Yemen’s opposition cast doubt that the embattled leader was serious. It was not the first time Saleh has expressed a willingness to step down amid eight months of mass protests demanding his ouster. Still, he has repeatedly refused to resign immediately and rejected a U.S.backed deal for him to hand over his authority. Saleh was gravely wounded in an explosion at his presidential palace in June, after which he left to Saudi Arabia for treatment. During his absence, mediators and opposition groups sought to convince him to stay away and transfer power to his deputy— a way to launch the regional power transfer deal. Saleh declined and returned abruptly to Yemen late last month. A violent crackdown against Saleh’s opponents followed, with outright street battles in the capital Sanaa between troops loyal to Saleh’s son Ahmed and dissident military units and pro-opposition tribesmen. In the meantime, the longtime leader has come under a
considerable pressure from the international community to step down. His new declaration Saturday aired on state TV gave little clue to his intentions. Saleh spoke to a gathering of lawmakers, his hands encased in beige medical gloves for the treatment of burns from the June bombing. He didn’t shake hands with any of his guests, who instead, shook the hands of his deputy standing by his side. “I never wanted power. I will reject power in the coming days. I will give it up,” he said. “But there are men will take power. There are men who are true to their pledges, whether military or civilians, who will take power. They can never destroy the country.” He did not elaborate on whom he was referring to or give any firm commitment to resign. Saleh said he would meet with parliament in the coming days to “transparently discuss” the situation in Yemen.

BEIJING — China’s President Hu Jintao has used the centennial of a revolution that ended imperial rule to make an appeal to further relations with Taiwan. Hu said at a ceremony in Beijing Sunday that China and Taiwan should end antagonisms, “heal wounds of the past and work together to achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.” The centennial marks the events set in motion in 1911 when revolutionaries overthrew the Qing dynasty’s imperial rule on the mainland. The Republic of China was established 2 1/2 months later, but its government fled in disarray to Taiwan in 1949 following the victory of Mao Zedong’s Communists over Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalists in the Chinese civil war.
TOKYO — Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived in the Japanese city of Fukushima on Sunday to observe the massive decontamination effort following the world’s worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Local doctors also began a long-term survey of children for thyroid abnormalities, a problem associated with radiation exposure. Officials hope to test some 360,000 people who were under the age of 18 when the nuclear crisis began in March, and then provide follow-ups throughout their lifetimes. The 12-member IAEA group was to visit farms, schools and government offices throughout Fukushima prefecture in northeastern Japan to observe the cleanup process. It is the U.N. atomic agency’s second major mission to Japan since the crisis at Fukushima’s Dai-ichi nuclear power plant began. Nearly 20,000 people were killed when the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11, and the disaster severely damaged the Fukushima complex. Officials say the plant is now relatively stable, but tens of thousands of people still cannot — or choose not to — return to their homes because of the radioactive contamination. No one has died from radiation in the nuclear crisis, but concerns remain high over how the lingering contamination will impact the safety of Fukushima’s children. The thyroid testing program is intended to allay those fears and build a database that might help deal with future disasters. On its opening day Sunday, more than 100 children, whose thyroid glands are more susceptible to radioactive iodine than adults, were checked.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The minister said he had received detailed information on the readiness of the local security agencies, namely the Bali provincial military command, the Bali
provincial police, the Ngurah Rai Air Base and Benoa Naval Base commands, to ensure the summit’s security. Djoko said a number of countries had already confirmed their plans to attend the upcoming Asean Summit. Plastic is an outcome of technology. Since its invention, it has been replacing many materials for many necessities at homes and beyond due to its practical purposes. Threat averted: Fox renews ‘Simpsons’ for 2 years Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — Fans of “The Simpsons” can breathe a “d’oh!” of relief: The animated series was renewed Friday for two more seasons. A contract dispute with the show’s voice cast had threatened to end the series, but Fox announced it will air through seasons 24 and 25. The animated series about the Simpson family, including dad Homer and his familiar “D’oh!” is TV’s longest-running scripted nighttime series. Negotiations over the future of “The Simpsons,” which began its 23rd season last month, spilled out into the public. Twentieth Century Fox Television, which makes the show, said it couldn’t continue without cutting costs and targeted the salaries of voice actors Harry Shearer, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith and Hank Azaria. Each actor makes a reported $8 million a year for their work on “The Simpsons,” and Fox said the show could not continue without pay cuts. Earlier Friday, Shearer said producers demanded a 45 percent reduction. The terms of the cast’s new deal were not announced. The Hollywood Reporter, citing unidentified sources, said the actors accepted a 30 percent pay cut in
the $440,000 they’d received for each of 22 episodes per season. Shearer said he’d told producers he’d be willing to accept a 70 percent pay cut, but in return the actors wanted “a tiny share” of the billions of dollars in profits the show has earned through syndication and marketing. The show’s creators, Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, have profit participation but the actors have been rebuffed in efforts to join them. Based on the rock in which the footprints were found, researchers have a good idea of what the climate would have been like, Boss said. “Picture an environment much like that of the shores of the Persian Gulf today. The air temperature was hot. The water was shallow and very salty,â€? Boss said. “It was a harsh environment. We’re not sure what the animals were doing here, but clearly they were here in some abundance.â€? Some of the tracks in the ďŹ eld have not been documented before in Arkansas. The researchers’ work will expand knowledge about dinosaurs that roamed the area and the climate during the period. The tracks from the three-toed dinosaur are about 2 feet long by 1 foot wide and likely are from Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, one of the largest predators ever known. There are also prints from
sauropods, large, long-necked planteating dinosaurs. Other sauropod tracks have been found in the state, including at a site near Nashville, also in the state’s southwest. “Through tracks, we can learn all sorts things about dinosaur biomechanics and behavior,� said University of Kansas researcher Brian Platt, who is taking part in the program. “Dinosaur bones can be dragged away by animals or swept out to sea. But we know that about 120 million years ago, dinosaurs walked right through here.� The grant from the National Science Foundation enabled a team of researchers to spend two weeks studying the site. They used traditional tools, including hammers, chisels and brooms, but also cutting-edge technology to record images, take measurements and map the site. Rock samples from the site can also shed light on the conditions under which the dinosaurs lived.
