Bon Jovi shows in China canceled for ‘unforeseen reasons’ BEIJING — Bon Jovi’s concert tour in China next week has been abruptly canceled because of what promoters said were “unforeseen reasons.”

AEG Live Asia declined to give the reason for the cancellation, but said in a statement Tuesday that refunds will be offered for shows scheduled Sept. 14 in Shanghai and Sept. 17 in Beijing. For Gere, playing a homeless man was a humbling experience

NEW YORK — The last time Richard Gere walked into this bar, he did it as a homeless man. Gere plays one in “Time Out of Mind,” a movie that he shot almost entirely on the streets of Manhattan — in East Village back allies, among the trash cans outside Grand Central Station and inside the Houston Street bar he’s returned to in order to reflect on an unusually spare and neo-realistic movie, one Gere has wanted to make for more than a decade. “I really believe this was one of the things I was meant to do,” says Gere, sitting in a booth in the back. Inspired by the photography of Saul Leiter, director Oren Moverman (“The Messenger, “Rampart”) frequently shot Gere from far away, hiding the camera from view to capture an unwitting city moving around one of the more famous faces on the planet. It was an audacious approach, one that, if successful, would only further prove part of the movie’s point: Most of us are oblivi-

ous to those suffering around us. Gere (also a producer) and Moverman nervously gave it a test run on the first day of shooting in the East Village’s Astor Place, where the man forever linked to “Pretty Woman” begged for change with a coffee cup. “As someone who would probably never stand on a street corner that long, it was an anxiety-ridden moment,” Gere recalls. “None of us really knew what was going to happen. We thought maybe we would get five minutes before crowds started to screw up the shot, that I would be recognized and it would be over. A couple minutes into the shot, we realized no one was paying attention.” They went on shooting unnoticed for 40 minutes, and the same lack of recognition continued throughout the production. “They could have seen Richard Gere if they looked into his eyes,” says Moverman. “Here we are putting make-believe in the middle of reality, and reality is saying, ‘No, that’s reality. That’s not make-believe.’ It

doesn’t matter who it is.” In “Time Out of Mind,” which opens Friday, Gere plays a vagrant named George Hammond whose unfortunate fate is teased out slowly and without sentiment. His backstory comes through only in Moverman’s patient observation of his movements around New York. (ap)

A concert by U.S. pop group Maroon 5 planned for Saturday in Shanghai was canceled in July following a reported tweet by a band member about meeting the Dalai Lama. The announcement of the Bon Jovi cancellations came on the same day as the Communist Party held grand celebrations in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa to mark 50 years since it established Tibet as an ethnic autonomous region firmly under Beijing’s control. China claims Tibet has always been part of its territory, but many Tibetans say the Himalayan region was virtually independent for centuries and that Beijing’s tight control is draining them of their culture and identity. LONDON - British soul singer Sam Smith on Tuesday said he will sing the theme song for the next James Bond film, “Spectre,” following in the footsteps of top artists selected for the prestigious spot. THE FORUM of Bali’s People Rejecting Benoa Bay Reclamation (ForBALI) sent letters to Presiden Joko Widodo, protesting the reclamation plan for Benoa Bay. There are at least 56 letters that have been sent to President Jokowi voicing people’s rejection of the reclamation plan. Previously, ForBALI also send a document to the president with the statement of all actions since 2013 to 2015. “We want to make sure that the president received the rejection letter from the Balinese so that Jokowi can clearly assess the situation and makes the right decision. JAKARTA - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo announced economic policy packages on Wednesday at the State Palace. The package, that’s been announced, is part of four economic packages promised by the government to reduce the effects of global economic slowdown and improve investment climate in the country. The package that will be announced today will cover simplification of several regulations and stimulus in the finance and investment sector.

In connection with investment deregulation, the government will simplify the 154 existing regulations that burden investors. Fiscal and financial policies consists of six or seven points, including those that mention foreign property ownership. Another policy will facilitate the disbursement of village funds, particularly for three main projects: irrigation, bridges and roads. The government also planned to

The letters were also sent to 19 government officials and agencies in the central, provincial and municipal governments. “These letters that we send are a form of protest, along with erecting billboards, holding rallies, concerts and other forms of protest all of which seek to encourage President Jokowi to revoke Presidential Decree No. 51, 2014 and cancel the reclamation plan for Benoa Bay,” he said. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

And those consumers often take their style pointers from elsewhere, which is why many brand companies are increasingly focusing on the country described by Bain as Asia’s “trendsetter and influencer for fashion and luxury”. Over the past year, leading global fashion houses have upped their game in South Korea in a bid to reach those well-heeled Asians

who take their fashion cues from popular Korean TV and pop stars. French powerhouse Chanel held its 2015/16 Cruise Collection in Seoul in May -- its first show in South Korea. TABANAN - Agricultural activity near Lake Beratan is one of the contributing causes of the contamination of the Lake, as witnessed by the rising Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) rates of the lake water near agricultural areas. The use of inorganic fertilizers, has been blamed as the cause of the pollution of the lake. Responding to the issue, the Head of the Tabanan Agriculture, Horticulture and Food Crops Agency, Nyoman Budana, admitted that farmers near the lake area indeed use chemical fertilizers. Budana said the this agency has taken several measures to urge the farmers to reduce their use of chemical fertilizers and to develop green house agriculture.

Budana added that even though farmers have been urged to reduce the use of inorganic fertilizer not all of the farmers have complied. “They are not all aware of the problem, so we will continue to appeal to them and disseminate information,” he said. Greenhouses, are one way to overcome this problem, but not all farmers can participate due to

budgetary constraints. According to Budana, making a green house is quite costly. Currently only large-capital farmers can afford to build them and the local government only has a very limited budget for such programs. Budana, would like to see all farmers in Baturiti switch over the greenhouse-based agriculture than emphasizes organic fertilizers. Regarding agricultural and tourism activities that contribute to the pollution of Lake Beratan, legislator of the Tabanan House, I Putu Eka Putra Nurcahyadi, said the issue needs to be addressed

Regulations governing eco-friendly agricultural and tourism activities, as well as regulations that aim at maintaining the vegetation at the buffer zone around the lake are also required. “We are certainly ready to give recommendations to the relevant agencies,” he said. NEGARA - Of the total 4,031 hectares of paddy plants in Jembrana, 516 hectares of them are facing possible crop failure. Last year however a number of subak areas have managed to yield two harvests. On that account, stocks of grain for food in Jembrana are more than adequate, exceeding the needs of the community.

Head of the Jembrana Agriculture, Plantation and Livestock Agency, I Ketut Wiratma, said that rice availability in Jembrana this year exceeds the amount required by the community. Some subak areas have been able to harvest up to two times a year. “The availability of rice from two yearly harvests, supplies more

than enough rice for needs of the population of Jembrana- of approximately 320,000 people,” said Wiratma. Previously the agency had attended a meeting with the Jembrana/1617 Military District Command, Jembrana Police and relevant stakeholders in food security. In fact, there are 516 hectares of paddy fields that are

prone to crop failure, but the agency ensures that rice stock in Jembrana stays safe. For one year, the average population needs 114 kilograms of rice per person. With a population of just over 320,000 people, Jembrana needs 36,522 tons per year. Currently, thanks to the two harvest of last April to August 2015 have

produced 34,043 tons of rice. In addition 2,304 hectares of paddy fields werenewly planted in June. As estimated, the subak area will harvest in September or October. With average results of 6.9 tons of per 100 meters, they can produce a total of 16,056 tons of rice. Thus, there could be a surplus of about 13,547 tons of rice. (kmb26)

Tensions rose ahead of a huge anti-government protest planned for Wednesday night. Lebanon’s latest crisis was sparked by popular anger over the heaps of trash accumulating in Beirut’s streets after authorities closed the capital’s main landfill on July 17 and failed to provide an alternative. The protests quickly moved beyond just the trash in the street to target an entire political class that has dominated the country and undermined its growth since the civil war ended in 1990. Lebanon has a confessional power-sharing system that often leads to incessant bickering and cronyism among the country’s politicians. Alibaba gets in the game with new sports company SHANGHAI - Chinese online giant Alibaba on Wednesday set up a new company to focus on professional sports, it said in a statement, as it seeks new business areas beyond e-commerce. Alibaba Sports Group, majority owned by Alibaba Group, will use its parent’s e-commerce ecosystem to participate in businesses such as sports media, events and ticketing, the statement said. It aims to “transform the China sports industry” and “bring greater and better products and services to consumers, sports participants and sports fans alike,” said Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang, who will also

Toyota rolls out new Prius hybrid as gas prices tumble

LAS VEGAS — The rollout of Toyota’s new Prius comes at an inauspicious time for gas-sipping vehicles. The Japanese automaker unveiled a sleeker version of the car that runs on gas and electricity at a glitzy event Tuesday night in Las Vegas. But gas prices nationwide were at $2.39 per gallon Thursday, the lowest level in since 2004, and analysts expect more declines now that summer driving season has ended. South Carolina prices are under $2 per gallon according to AAA, and four other states were at $2.10 or lower. The 2016 Prius is more sculpted and sportier looking than the current version as Toyota tries to move the car from appealing mainly to environmentalists to more of a mainstream vehicle. The company says it will get about 55 mpg in combined city and highway driving, about 10 percent better than the 2015 version. It’s more than 2 inches longer than the current car, and it sits almost an inch lower. The fourth-generation Prius’ new underpinnings, including a new suspension, will give it a lower center of gravity for crisper handling than the current Prius, plus a smoother ride. “What once was a rational purchase that for many customers focused on fuel economy is now so much more,” said Bill Fay, general manager of the Toyota Division in the U.S. Tom Libby, manager of industry

Conservation forest vulnerable to fire after drought

BANGLI - Section Head of the Regional Conservation II, of the Bali Conservation and Natural Resources Agency, I Ketut Catur Marbawa recently conveyed that during the dry season, conservation forests in the county of Bangli, are vulnerable to catching fire. For this reason, people -especially those living near the forests, are being asked to be vigilant. Marbawa explained that the conservation forest area in Bangli County, at Mount Batur and Bukit Payang cover an area of 2,075 hectares. The forests that are overgrown with weeds become vulnerable to wild fires during the dry season.

“Conservation forests are extremely prone to catching on fire because of all the dry weeds at this time of year. Even a small spark can quickly ignite a large fire,” said Marbawa. He added that about two weeks ago, a conservation forest near Jati

Temple caught fire. Fortunately, the fire did not spread, as they were abel to extinguished it in a relatively short time. Marbawa also revealed that a conservation forest in the area of Penelokan covering about 500 hectares is also prone to fires because of the abundance of dry weeds there during the dry season. of some of the fires may in fact be from people throwing their cigarettes butts onto dry weeds especially in forest areas that are near highways. JAKARTA - Smog from forest fires in Indonesia on Tuesday prompted the cancellation of flights and warnings for people to stay indoors, while pushing air quality to unhealthy levels in neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia. The thick haze came from blazes on western Sumatra island and the Indonesian part of Borneo island, which are home to huge palm oil and pulp and paper plantations. Vast tracts of land are cleared on both islands for plantations using illegal slash-and-burn methods, causing fierce fires every year during Indonesia’s dry season that choke the region with acrid smog. In Sumatra’s Riau province, air quality reached hazardous levels and visibility dropped as low as 100 metres (330 feet), with the airport and schools in the provincial capital closed and people warned not to venture outdoors. Flights were also disrupted at other airports in Sumatra. In Singapore, east of Sumatra, haze shrouded the skyscrapers of the citystate’s skyline and air pollution rose above the “unhealthy” level. LONDON - Indonesia has made an official request to rejoin OPEC, the oil producing cartel announced on Tuesday. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries welcomed the move after Indonesia made its intentions public in June. Resource-rich Indonesia, southeast Asia’s largest economy, was part of OPEC for almost 50 years until suspending its membership in 2009 after becoming a net oil importer. Its return is seen as a way for Indonesia to access cheaper oil supplies as demand soars amid falling domestic production. “Indonesia has submitted an official request to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to reactivate its full membership in the Organization,” Vienna-based OPEC said in a statement Tuesday. OPEC said that Energy Minister Sudirman Said would be invited to attend the cartel’s next regular meeting on December 4 in the Austrian capital that “will include the formalities of reactivating Indonesia’s membership”. The statement added: “Indonesia

has contributed much to OPEC’s history. We welcome its return to the Organization.” The OPEC statute states that “any country with a substantial net export of crude petroleum” can become a full member. But it also says associate membership is possible for countries who do no qualify as full members, the course Indonesia is likely to pursue, analysts say. There would six trains to carry 24,000 passengers every day with a speed on 60-80 km per hour. President Joko Widodo said the ground breaking ceremony will mark the start of work to build the mass transport infrastructure in the greater Jakarta area . “The LRT is integrated with all other means of public transport in Jakarta including TransJakarta, airport railway JakartaBandung speed train, etc,” the president said. LONDON - UEFA’s decision to expand the European championship to 24 teams six years ago was condemned by many but millions of fans across the continent are delighted with that choice now as the Euro 2016 qualification race draws to a gripping finale. KUALA LUMPUR - Asian soccer officials have condemned the crowd disturbances that forced the abandonment of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier in Malaysia and vowed to help the sport’s world governing body FIFA with its investigation into the incident. The match, between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia at the Shah Alam Stadium in Selangor, was called off less than three minutes before fulltime after local fans launched flares and fireworks from the stands. Players from both teams fled the pitch as thick smoke began filling the ground and did not return. The match was later abandoned and a report on the incident was sent to FIFA by the match commissioner, Rufus Prince of India. “The AFC is extremely disappointed with the events which took place on Tuesday and we stress that we take such matters very seriously,” Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said in a stronglyworded statement on Wednesday.

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — Neymar scored twice as Brazil beat the United States 4-1 in an international friendly on Tuesday, the last warmup for the American squad ahead of a playoff against Mexico next month for a 2017 Confederations Cup berth. Hulk scored in the ninth minute for Brazil, which opened a 4-0 lead before Danny Williams scored from about 30 yards in injury time. Brazil has won 10 consecutive games against the U.S. With Fabian Johnson and Damarcus Beasley sidelined by injuries, the American defense was outclassed. Left back Tim Ream was outmaneuvered in the run-up to the first and third goals, right back Geoff Cameron conceded a penalty kick for the second, and central defenders Michael Orozco and Ventura Alvarado gave the five-time world champions time and space. “I don’t think we handled it as well as we should have,” U.S. captain Michael Bradley said. “We’ll look at it and we’ll talk about it, but we have bigger things to come.” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said the Americans missed Johnson and Beasley and he hopes to have both back to face Mexico on Oct.

Rafinha entered in the 63rd in his second international appearance and scored almost immediately, taking a pass from Lucas and using three quick touches to get Ream to lean the wrong way. Rafinha then slotted past Guzan. Neymar got his 46th goal in 67 international appearances in the 67th minute when the defense gave him space following a feed from Lucas. “It was just a completely different tempo that they set,” Klinsmann said, “and we couldn’t go that tempo.” (ap)
