Actor Shia LaBeouf arrested in Georgia on disorderly conduct charge
GEORGIA - Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested in Georgia on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication early on Saturday after he became unruly in downtown Savannah, police said. LaBeouf, best known for his role as Sam Witwicky in the “Transformers” action movie franchise, was in the bustling City Market neighborhood before dawn when he approached a bystander and a police officer and asked for a cigarette, Savannah police said in a statement. “When LaBeouf wasn’t given a cigarette, he became disorderly, using profanities and vulgar language in front of the women and children present,” the statement said. He became aggressive toward the officer when asked to leave, police said, and when the officer tried to arrest LaBeouf he ran into a hotel lobby. Eventually he was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and obstruction, and booked into the Chatham County jail, authorities said. He was released a few hours later, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said. A spokeswoman for LaBeouf, 31, did not return a call or email seeking comment. LaBeouf was in Savannah to act in independent movie “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” according to trade publication Variety. This is the latest in a series of arrests for LaBeouf. In January, he was arrested after a scuffle outside a New York museum where he was chanting, “He will not divide us,” during a live-streamed protest against President Donald Trump. In 2014 he was arrested after disturbing a performance of the musical “Cabaret” on Broadway in New York, which led to him pleading guilty to a disorderly conduct violation and receiving outpatient care for addiction. Western Canada wildfires prompt state of emergency, evacuations KAMLOOPS - Some 180 wildfires raged over a massive section of Western Canada’s British Columbia on Saturday, prompting the evacuation of 3,000 households and the province’s first state of emergency in 14 years. The blazes were scattered across hundreds of kilometers of the interior portion of the province, burning through bone-dry forests used for logging and rolling grasslands that are home to ranches. High temperatures and winds complicated firefighting efforts. “The weather situation is not favorable,” said John Rustad, provincial minister in charge of firefighting operations. “There is very aggressive fire behavior that makes it very difficult to directly attack.” The spate of wildfires began on Friday, when 138 new fires were reported, most of them sparked by lightning in dry electrical storms. No injuries or deaths were reported. Provincial officials said they did not know how much damage had been caused, though evacuees said they had left behind farm animals and witnessed destruction of homes and other buildings.
Some evacuees made their way to a make-shift emergency center at a sporting facility in Kamloops, some 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Vancouver. Some people said they were not given adequate time to pack up their goods. Others, who had been away from their homes on vacation, feared they would lose cherished belongings in the fires. Chalky red fire retardant dust was splashed on some vehicles that passed through areas that were sprayed with the substance from “water bomber” planes used to fight the fire. Canada’s federal government on
Saturday offered to help British Columbia respond to the fast-spreading wildfires, though provincial authorities said they may have enough resources already. Rustad said that he expected about 260 personnel from other jurisdictions in Canada to support a team of more than 1,600 people helping respond to the fire. “We are bringing a tremendous amount of resources to bear,” he said, noting that their main priority was “to keep people safe.” British Columbia last declared a state of emergency in August 2003, which was also to deal with wildfires. Growing awareness about need to protect turtles
DENPASAR - Before the 1990’s the turtle trade was booming in Bali and turtle meat was commonly consumed as satay, lawar, and other delicacies. Turtles were and still are also used for ceremonies in Bali. However growing concerns about the fate of the turtle species has been growing and there are now measures been taken to ensure that the turtles survive. Such measures include the creation of the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) in Serangan Village, South Denpasar that is chaired by I Made Sukanta.
Slowly but surely, public awareness about the need to protect the turtles is growing. People will sometimes collect turtle eggs form the shore to bring them to this center where they can be protected until they hatch. The people of Serangan are particularly careful about no longer slaughtering turtles for food. “There used to be a turtle trade here, but now people have understood the negative impact this has on the environment”, said Sukanta. Every day, Sukanta and the management team of the TCEC come to Serangan Village to take care of the turtle eggs. Sukanta said that the TCEC currently has 95 egg nests with an estimated 9,300 eggs. Turtle eggs found on the beach are brought to the conservation site so that they will not be eaten by other animals or accidentally trampled. The eggs take anywhere from between 45 to 75 days to hatch , depending on the species of turtle. A single turtle can spawn hundred of eggs a year. Once the eggs have hatched at the center, they are released back into the sea. “On average a turtle produce 100 to 130 several times a year”, he explained. The center is therefore
able to provide turtles for ceremonies. As Sukanta explained, it is better to hand over a turtle that has already laid 300 eggs that for people to hunt turtles who might not have laid their eggs yet. The TCEC only takes care of a few turtles so that they can provide for the community’s ceremonial needs. Request for turtles must have recommendations from several institutions, including the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI). In 2016, The TCEC received a total of 47 requests fro turtles for ceremonial purposes. In addition to serving as a centre of conservation and education, the TCEC as serves as a tourist attraction where foreign visitors of all ages come to see the turtle conservation process. (kmb42)

Demand for organic fertilizer reaches 50 tons each day
DENPASAR - Organic fertilizers are in great demand by all kinds of people. In fact Tabanan alone provides 50 tons of organic fertilizer every day. Organic fertilized is of course used by the agricultural sector but also in small nurseries, hotels, villas and fish ponds. The use of organic fertilizer is not only for agriculture but also varies, such as for nurseries, industry, hotels, villas and fish ponds. Foreigners are also interested in using organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer entrepreneur, A.A. Nyoman Wijana, said that the annual demand for organic fertilizer can reach 350 tons. He and nine other organic fertilizer producers can supply 50 tons. “ I can only produce 10 tons”, he explained during a during a press conference held by the HKTI recently. The price of organic fertilizer is six times cheaper than urea fertilizer at only IDR 950 per kg but is nonetheless a very profitable business. “So, by getting
involved in waste processing you can become rich, so people should grab this opportunity” he said. Wijana explained that organic fertilizer is more effective than urea fertilizer. His organic fertilizer is made from 15 tons of waste consisting of a variety of non-toxic sources including sewage, sawdust etc. After being processed, the source materials amount to less than the organic fertilizer obtained so it is no wonder that people are competing to get their hands on waste materials. “ We care about eh environment so we compete to get the water materials. There is tight competition but we work closely”, he said. He refute accusations of organic fertilizer causing weeds to grow that could disrupt agricultural crops, explaining that organic fertilizer is best used on the land before cultivation begins. Weeds are then crushed by the tractors during planting, so they will not disrupt the intended crops, he said. (kmb2)

Education agency and education council affirm to be lawful TABANAN - The process of student admission with zoning system seems to still raise a variety of problems. In Tabanan, there are at least two subdistricts getting the attention namely Tabanan and Kediri. Many students are still not accommodated due to the lack of private schools in the regions. Legislative and executive ranks with the education council and clinic immediately made coordination after the plenary session. As a result, a number of public schools are still possible to add classrooms. The addition of classroom is considered not to violate the rules because in the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017 is set forth that schools are allowed to increase the number of student admission by adding classrooms, but should not exceed 11 classes. “On average, there is an addition of two classes in order to be able to accommodate students who have not been received by school. This does not violate the rules of new student admission or PPDB,” said the Head of the Tabanan Education Agency, I Wayan Adnyana. Further, he said that new student admission surely remains to comply with the procedures as in the previous new student admission. For example, the SMPN 1 Tabanan junior high school adding three classes from eight to 11 classes is considered not a problem. It has been set forth in the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017. “In the ministerial regulation, it is also set forth that schools having many enthusiasts can be opened up to 11 classes,” he explained. For SMPN 1 Tabanan, there is an addition of 114 students where 20 students of them have been already registered because the requirements are already met, while the 90 other students have enrolled on the last day of registration, Friday (Jul. 7), while the SMPN 2 added 119 students from the addition plan as many as 128 students. This happens because 9 students of them have passed the selection because on the student admission there is similarity of scores. Meanwhile, the SMPN 3 Tabanan got 81 additional students. Wayan Adnyana admitted the additional classrooms and implementation of double shifts for three public schools in Tabanan subdistrict is still enforced. “Since this is a new rule, surely it needs a process, while preparing school facilities. Possibly two years ahead this program can be more maximal,” he explained. Head of the Tabanan Education Council, I Wayan Madra Suartana, attending the meeting of the Commission IV of the Tabanan House of Representatives, said that re-opening of student admission at the SMPN 1 Tabanan can only be followed by those who have registered. “Other than those cannot,” he explained. In the meantime, Principal of the SMPN 1 Tabanan, I Made Sucahya, said that he cannot do much because the addition of the class has been already a decision from the legislative and the education agency. “I do not want to apply double shifts. Probably, the students will put into the existing class even though it exceeds 32 students. With the addition of approximately 90 students, there will be at least 42 students in one class,” he explained. Associated with the recruitment system, he emphasized that it refers to the prevailing system, namely through exam score (NEM) and achievement. “There is no registration made in the poor student track,” he said. He already denied the names of students recommended by the Tabanan education agency in last minutes of the student enrollment period. When asked about the basis of recommendation, he mentioned it refers to circular issued by the regional secretary of Tabanan and the education agency. Besides, it refers to the latest circular from the ministry of education and culture. “There is a recent circular of the ministry of education and culture equally used as the basis. THE RUNNING OF THE BULLS
This street festival gained international popularity after the American author Ernest Hemingway used the celebration as a backdrop for the characters of his 1926 masterpiece The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta in Spanish). Today, Los Sanfermines continue to be world famous as a place where the brave take the challenge in the Encierro (running of the bulls). However, San Fermin is not only running with bulls. The streets of
Pamplona also come alive with music, fireworks, folkloric events, dancing, singing and religious ceremonies. Los Sanfermines offer visitors an open and hospitable festival, where anything out of the ordinary is welcome and can soon become part of the tradition, as long as it is respectful of others. Los Sanfermines are a festival where nobody is a stranger, where all participants are considered equal, and where the festive spirit never dies throughout its 9 days of celebrations. The festive spirit of Los Sanfermines is important, but this is also a festival with religious origins. Events such as the procession that takes place on the morning of the 7th day, help keep this aspect alive. The religious celebration complements, in perfect harmony, the iconic bull -a totem- and Baco, the god of wine. Everyone in the city including locals and outsiders has a great time over these 9 days, a time that always seems to go by too fast.

A brown bull named “Huracan,” or Hurricane, broke away early and sped ahead through the parting crowds of runners, several of whom barely dodged its swinging horns. Huracan came close to catching a runner when it hooked a horn in the pant leg of a young man entering the bullring, lifting him along the wall before dragging him for a few meters (yards). The man apparently escaped unscathed. The nine-day San Fermin fiesta attracts tens of thousands of partygoers from Spain and abroad. Bali, the only province to experience deflation during Eid 2017
DENPASAR - Bali is the only province that experienced deflation during the period of fasting and Eid ul-Fitr 2017. In June 2017, the province of Bali experienced deflation of -0.12 percent (mtm) or 4.02 percent (yoy). This achievement is much better compared to national monthly and annual inflation. This was revealed by Chief of Bali Representative Office of Bank Indonesia (BI), Causa Iman Karana, in his press conference in Denpasar on Friday (Jul. 7). “This makes Bali the only province in Indonesia to have experienced deflation in June 2017”, he said. Of the 82 cities across Indonesia whose inflation rate is calculated, only three cities experienced deflation in June 2017, and two of these cities are in Bali, namely Singaraja and Denpasar. “Singaraja recorded deflation of -0.64 percent (mtm), while Denpasar recorded a deflation of -0.01 percent (mtm). Therefore, the two cities in Bali sampled for inflation are recorded to have experience deflation”, said Iman happily. The deflation that occurred in June, he added was influenced by the falling prices of food commodities such as garlic, cayenne pepper, red chili and chicken meat. “Maintenance of distribution system and availability of supplies seem to have been key to deflation in both cities and Bali in general”, he added. Aside from food commodities, Causa added that air transportation rates in Bali province during the period of Eid ul-Fitr 2017 also experienced deflation, amounting to -1.23 percent (mtm). “During
the period of Eid ul-Fitr over the past three years, air freight rates are always recorded as amongst the five highest commodities that contribute to inflation in the province of Bali”, he said. Chairman of Bali’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said on Friday (Jul. 7) that the BAF should have a positive impact on the sales and marketing of the products on display and that these products should be ready for export and able to compete in the international market. According to Wiraputra, craft businesses should only be allowed to participate in the BAF twice before being obliged to upgrade the types of products they offer to export quality or at least to a quality that could be sold throughout Indonesia. He added that different artisans should be given an opportunity to participate
in the BAF every year. In addition, the organizers of the BAF need to be bringing in buyers from across Indonesia as well as from abroad. Since the Baf is a big event, he said, it should be utilized as an opportunity fro businesses to develop their products and their businesses. “Each district / municipality should also be given the same opportunity”, he concluded. The security and comfort of visitors to the BAF also needs to be maintained. Wiraputra pointed out that because Bali is as an international tourist destination, the BAF should be able to attract more tourists and serve to develop and promote Balinese cultural tourism. “The committee should not just be profit oriented, but should also provide education, including about Bali’S handy-craft products. “If it too difficult to implement every year, then it should only be held once every two years”, he said. Chinese tourist killed rafting in the rapids of Ayung River
to rescue five of them. Unfortunately, Wang Yumei was taken downstream by the swift current of the Ayung River. After some time the 25 yearold Chinese woman was seen caught between two rocks in the river. Wayan Purnayasa and Kadek Karyasa tried to rescue here but had a hard time retrieving the woman due to the swift current. Eventually they were able to lift her to shore but by that time the victim had no pulse. Wang Yumei was ascertained to have died on the rocks. This incident was then reported to the Payangan police and the victim’s body was evacuated to the Payangan Health Center on Saturday afternoon around 17:00. On Saturday night, the victim’s body was sent to Sanglah Hospital.
Chief of Payangan Police, Gde Endrawan, confirmed the facts of the incident, explaining that based on their investigation the swift current of the Ayung River caused by heavy rains over the last few days was to blame for the victim loosing her life. “According to the testimonies of the witnesses, the river currents were swift at the time of the incident but most of the passengers were able to survive” he said. The police Chief added that the victim’s body only had an external examination at the Payangan Health Center before being sent to Sanglah Hospital. “The victim’s body has been sent to Sanglah Hospital and tomorrow it will be handled by her consulate”, said police chief. CAIRO - Egyptian police officers have shot dead 16 gunmen in two shootouts, the country’s Interior Ministry said on Saturday, adding that most of those killed were fugitive militants linked to recent attacks on security forces in Northern Sinai.

According to the testimony of the rafting guides on duty at Tukad rafting, I Wayan Purnayasa and Kadek Karyasa on Saturday afternoon around 13:30, they started a trip down the river with 13 guests on two rafts. The first raft held 6 guests with I Wayan Purnayasa acting as guide, while the second raft carried 7 guests with Kaedek Karyasa as their guide. After moving southward down the river for about 10 minutes, the rafts reached the first set of rapids 300 meters downriver where Wayan Purnayasa raft was suddenly flipped upside-down leaving the six passengers in the river. Egypt faces an Islamist insurgency led by the Islamic State group in the restive Sinai Peninsula, where hundreds of soldiers and police have been killed since 2013. At least two policemen were killed and nine wounded when their armoured vehicle was hit by an explosion in the Sinai on Saturday, Egypt’s state news agency MENA said. Saturday’s attack came a day after at least 23 soldiers were killed when suicide car bombs tore through two military checkpoints in the region in an attack claimed by Islamic State. It was one of the bloodiest assaults on security forces in years. The Interior Ministry said that gunmen had opened fire on police as they approached a desert training camp for militants in Ismailia.
The officers returned fire, killing 14 militants, five of whom have been identified so far. The camp was used to “subject (recruits) to military training programmes on the use of various types of firearms and manufacture explosive devices...,” the ministry said in a statement. In a separate statement the ministry also said its forces killed two men described as fugitive terrorists in an exchange of gunfire in the city of Giza. The men, who were inside an apartment, opened fire on security forces as soon as the officers approached to arrest them, it said. The ministry said the pair were members of a newly emerged militant group called Hasm, which claimed responsibility for the killing of a homeland security officer outside his home in Qalubiya, a
province just north of Cairo, while on his way to prayers on Friday. Hasm has claimed several attacks around Cairo targeting judges and policemen since last year. Other militant groups such as Hasm, which the government says are linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, are active in Cairo and other cities where they have targeted security forces, judges and progovernment figures. The Brotherhood was outlawed in 2013 after the military ousted one of its leaders, Mohamed Mursi, from the presidency following mass protests. It maintains that it is a peaceful organisation. Hours after his pre-dawn transfer from the Ramo Verde military jail, Lopez appeared over a wall of his Caracas house, waving the Venezuelan flag and punching the air before a crowd of supporters who cheered and cried upon seeing him. In a message released by his party, the 46-year-old hardliner urged opposition supporters to continue street protests against President Nicolas Maduro, which are in their fourth month and have led to at least 90 deaths. “If maintaining my fight for freedom means running the risk of returning to a cell in Ramo Verde, I am more than happy to take it,” he said in the message read by Freddy Guevara, the No. 2 in Lopez’s Popular Will party. “Today, I am a prisoner in my house, but so are the Venezuelan people. CAIRO - Egypt aims to double production of its most famous export, the silky soft cotton once known as “white gold”, after a period of slumping output, an Agriculture Ministry spokesman said on Saturday. Hamed AbdelDayem told Reuters production should rise to 1.4 million qintar (160 kg) in the 2017-18 fiscal year that started in July from 700,000 qintar a year earlier. All the cotton will be exported. The government aims to increase the price of the long staple cotton to more than 3000 Egyptian pounds ($168.07) per qintar, which will all be exported, the spokesman said.
Production of the cotton, used in luxury bedding, has fallen sharply since 2011, a year of political upheaval that coincided with looser regulations that degraded the quality of local cotton. Since the 1980s, the people at Ketewel village, Sukawati, have made shrine decorations known as murda craft and this region is now the center of the murda craft industry. Murda artisan Ketut Mita, admitted that his craft business often goes through ups and downs, but added that he has still managed to earn a living with this business. He explained that most customers will order a single set of murda but that on good days he gets as many as ten orders, with each sold for anywhere between IDR 25,000 and IDR 700,000 a piece. In one day Mita can only produce one or two murda as he explained that Ketewel murda frames are carved with intricate ornamental motifs that include images of holy bells, dragons, elephants, mango leaves and others. His wife, I Nyoman Sutini, added that the making of murda ornaments indeed requires special skills and takes a long time because everything is done manually without the help of machines or molds. “To make the bottom frame, we must first form it by using iron and then cast it with concrete. HAMBURG - Leaders from the world’s leading economies broke with U.S. President Donald Trump on climate policy at a G20 summit on Saturday, in a rare public admission of disagreement and blow to multilateral cooperation.

LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate from a fast-moving wildfire burning through steep terrain near California’s central coast on Saturday, after searing temperatures and parched land fueled dozens of blazes in the U.S. West and Southwest. The so-called Alamo Fire, feeding on bone-dry vegetation, nearly tripled in size on Saturday to about 19,000 acres (7,700 hectares) on the border between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. More than 1,000 firefighters have been fighting the blaze that started on Thursday and was 10-percent contained as of Saturday afternoon, officials said. There were 40 uncontained large U.S. wildfires on Saturday, the National Weather Service said. One of the largest was the Truckee Fire in Nevada, which was nearly 100,000 acres (40,460 hectares) in size, according to the InciWeb tracking service. There have been no immediate reports of fire-related deaths. No major injuries have been reported in California’s Alamo fire, according to Santa Barbara County spokeswoman Gina DePinto. She said authorities are working to evacuate people from the blaze, aiming to stop it from reaching wineries to the south and electric transmission lines to the southeast. JAKARTA - State fertilizer company PT Pupuk Indonesia distributed 4.35 million tons of subsidized fertilizers to the food crops sector in the first semester of 2017, accounting for 46 percent of the targeted 9.55 million tons. The fertilizers comprised 1.9 million tons of urea-based fertilizers, 1.25 tons of NPK, 432 thousand tons of SP36, 472 thousand tons of ZA, and 296 thousand tons of organic fertilizer, Pupuk Indonesia Corporate Communication Chief Wijaya Laksana said here on Friday. The distribution of subsidized fertilizers to the food crops sector is relatively good this year, he stated. “The current stocks are also quite safe. On a national scale, total stocks in lines III & IV or warehouses and kiosks stood at 856,114 tons as of July 6. The amount is enough to meet the needs for six weeks ahead. The amount excludes stocks in the warehouses of fertilizer plants and provincial governments,” he noted. The national stocks in lines III & IV consist of 446,771 tons of urea-based fertilizers; 208,896 tons of NPK; 40,202 tons of SP36; and ZA and organic fertilizers. Jokowi, Trump meet on sidelines of G20 Summit
JAKARTA - Presidents of Indonesia and the United States, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Donald Trump, held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, on Saturday.
The meeting was held at the Hamburg meeting room Messe Und Congress, according to Chief of the Press, Media and Information Bureau at the Presidential Secretariat Bey Machmudin in a press statement released on Saturday. “I would like to express greetings from millions of your fans in Indonesia. They are interested to welcome you to Indonesia,” Jokowi remarked as an ice breaker of their talks. He also expressed his appreciation to Trump for the visit by US Vice President Michael Pence to Jakarta some time ago. Pence’s visit marked US commitment to strengthen ties with Indonesia. During the meeting, enhancement of cooperation in the economic field and the eradication of terrorism were discussed. In the economic sector, Jokowi conveyed Indonesias concern regarding palm oil exports for biodiesel to the United States. Jokowi also stated that Indonesia would import large amounts of soy. Both Jokowi and Trump agreed to promote mutually beneficial bilateral trade. Indonesia’s trade ties with the United States vary widely, ranging from palm oil and soy to airplanes. In the field of counter-terrorism, Jokowi expressed his appreciation to the United States for its commitment of not being hostile to Islam and cooperating with Muslim countries to combat terrorism.

Indonesia ready to face negotiations on guidelines in COP23
JAKARTA - The government of Indonesia is ready to negotiate its interest to be included in the Modality, Procedures and Guidelines (MPGs) for the implementation of the Paris Agreement 2016. The modality, procedures and guidelines will be discussed in the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which will take place in Germany on November 6-17, 2017. Environment and Forestry Ministrys General Director of Climate Change Management Nur Masripatin said in a press statement received by ANTARA News here on Sunday, that the Indonesian delegation would ensure its national interest to be accommodated in the MPGs. The COP-23 will discuss a concept called “One Conference, Two Zones” divided into two major meeting agenda of negotiations and non-negotiations. On the National Focal Point (NFP), Masripatin explained that Indonesia has been preparing some
strategies since June 2017 in the face of the COP-23. It has formed a negotiator team, a delegation secretariat team and a pavilion team. It is also preparing a delegation office; a side event themed “Forest and Land Sector”; a submission draft; a standard operating procedure; and a guideline and position for the Indonesian delegation. In regard to the pavilion of Indonesia, Masripatin noted it would be themed “A Smarter World: Green Solutions for A Changing Climate”, which pictures commitment, readiness, and capability of Indonesia as the part of the solution to mitigate the climate change. “The theme is divided into four sub-themes, which are strategy, plan, implementation, and review,” she said. Zverev was billed as an intriguing conundrum for Federer and a potential third-round banana skin with his old-school style harking back to a bygone era of the grasscourt game. Yet, unfortunately for the German, the seven times champion has a flair for such puzzles and, after a testing opening set, swept home 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4 in Saturday’s Centre Court clash. That saw Federer safely into the second week at the All England Club for the 15th time and gave him a few days to recover from a head cold that has been bothering him before he takes on Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the last 16 on Monday. “I had more problems with my cold than my opponents,” he said after a third successive match without dropping a set. Perhaps the only positive for Zverev was that it was not as bad as the first time he played Federer on grass four years ago when he lost without winning a game.
The result on Saturday, however, never really looked in doubt for Federer, who is seeking a record eighth Wimbledon men’s singles title. Zverev’s relentless charging of the net posed few issues for third seed Federer, who stayed on course for a record eighth Wimbledon title by using the German as a target and relentlessly picking him off. Federer hit 61 winners to Zverev’s 20, while the German won only 55 percent of points at the net, usually a prime position of strength. OLDEST PLAYER With Federer seeking to become the oldest player to win Wimbledon in the professional era, this was the sort of stress-free workout he would have enjoyed. He did, however, have a minor wobble in the first set that sent it to a tiebreak. Having broken for a 3-1 lead, Federer failed to pick a volley
off his shoelaces to hand Zverev a break point that the German took when the Swiss shanked a forehand. Any frustration Federer may have felt was channelled in a clinical tiebreak, which he won without dropping a point on his serve. From then on it was easy going for Federer, who did not face a break point in the remainder of the encounter. He broke for a 2-1 lead in the second set with a clinical forehand put-away and again at the same point in the third, when 27th-seeded Zverev double faulted. Having not been pushed to his brilliant best, Federer at least finished with a flourish, wrapping up the match after an hour and 49 minutes with his 13th ace. Thirteenth seed Dimitrov, now aged 26, may provide a sterner challenge, although he is another player who has never beaten Federer in five previous efforts. “Grigor is stronger every time I play him, he’s at the perfect age right now, understands his game and is physically strong... I’m ready for a tough one but another exciting match because he’s a great shot player.” (rtr)
HOUSTON - James Harden and the Houston Rockets agreed on a four-year contract extension that reportedly is the richest in NBA history. The contract is a super-maximum extension that will guarantee Harden $228 million through the 2022-23 season, league sources told ESPN on Saturday. “Houston is home for me,” Harden said in a statement released by the Rockets. “(Owner Leslie Alexander) has shown he is fully committed to winning and my teammates and I are going to keep putting in the work to get better and compete for the title.” Harden, runner-up for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award last season, has two years and $59 million left on his current contract. The four-year extension carries a value of $170 million. The Rockets fast-tracked the Harden extension with the arrival of All-Star guard Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers, and reportedly are trying to complete a deal with the New York Knicks for eight-time All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony. With the mega-deal, Harden is taking advantage of new collective bargaining agreement rules that enable contract extensions for superstars. Romelu Lukaku has confirmed he will be joining Manchester United from Everton. Pre-empting an official announcement by the club, the Belgium striker said in an interview with ESPN that he chose United despite a late offer from Premier League champion Chelsea, his former team. “My mind was already set,” the 24-year-old Lukaku said. “I gave my word, and I don’t look back ... I was already mentally preparing to be part of the team.” Lukaku had a medical examination Saturday in Los Angeles, where he is currently on vacation. He is set to move for 75 million

The game was abandoned, with Ajax tweeting soon after that Nouri had heart arrhythmias, a condition whereby the organ beats either too fast or too slow. A later statement said the reasons for his collapse were unclear and that he was being kept in intensive care but “out of danger”.
“Since arriving at the hospital he has been thoroughly examined. He had a weak heart beat and is being kept asleep to allow for optimal treatment and care,” the club added. Zverev was billed as an intriguing conundrum for Federer and a potential third-round banana skin with his old-school style harking back to a bygone era of the grasscourt game. Yet, unfortunately for the German, the seven times champion has a flair for such puzzles and, after a testing opening set, swept home 7-6(3) 6-4 6-4 in Saturday’s Centre Court clash. That saw Federer safely into the second week at the All England Club for the 15th time and gave him a few days to recover from a head cold that has been bothering him before he takes on Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in the last 16 on Monday. “I had more problems with my cold than my opponents,” he said after a third successive match without dropping a set. Perhaps the only positive for Zverev was that it was not as bad as the first time he played Federer on grass four years ago when he lost without winning a game.
The result on Saturday, however, never really looked in doubt for Federer, who is seeking a record eighth Wimbledon men’s singles title. Zverev’s relentless charging of the net posed few issues for third seed Federer, who stayed on course for a record eighth Wimbledon title by using the German as a target and relentlessly picking him off. Federer hit 61 winners to Zverev’s 20, while the German won only 55 percent of points at the net, usually a prime position of strength. OLDEST PLAYER With Federer seeking to become the oldest player to win Wimbledon in the professional era, this was the sort of stress-free workout he would have enjoyed. He did, however, have a minor wobble in the first set that sent it to a tiebreak. Having broken for a 3-1 lead, Federer failed to pick a volley
off his shoelaces to hand Zverev a break point that the German took when the Swiss shanked a forehand. Any frustration Federer may have felt was channelled in a clinical tiebreak, which he won without dropping a point on his serve. From then on it was easy going for Federer, who did not face a break point in the remainder of the encounter. He broke for a 2-1 lead in the second set with a clinical forehand put-away and again at the same point in the third, when 27th-seeded Zverev double faulted. Having not been pushed to his brilliant best, Federer at least finished with a flourish, wrapping up the match after an hour and 49 minutes with his 13th ace. Thirteenth seed Dimitrov, now aged 26, may provide a sterner challenge, although he is another player who has never beaten Federer in five previous efforts. “Grigor is stronger every time I play him, he’s at the perfect age right now, understands his game and is physically strong... HOUSTON - James Harden and the Houston Rockets agreed on a four-year contract extension that reportedly is the richest in NBA history. The contract is a super-maximum extension that will guarantee Harden $228 million through the 2022-23 season, league sources told ESPN on Saturday. “Houston is home for me,” Harden said in a statement released by the Rockets. “(Owner Leslie Alexander) has shown he is fully committed to winning and my teammates and I are going to keep putting in the work to get better and compete for the title.” Harden, runner-up for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award last season, has two years and $59 million left on his current contract. The four-year extension carries a value of $170 million. The Rockets fast-tracked the Harden extension with the arrival of All-Star guard Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers, and reportedly are trying to complete a deal with the New York Knicks for eight-time All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony. HAMBURG - Leaders from the world’s leading economies broke with U.S. President Donald Trump on climate policy at a G20 summit on Saturday, in a rare public admission of disagreement and blow to multilateral cooperation.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, keen to show off her skills as a mediator two months before a German election, achieved her primary goal at the meeting in Hamburg, convincing her fellow leaders to support a single communique with pledges on trade, finance, energy and Africa. But the divide between Trump, elected on a pledge to put “America First”, and the 19 other members of the club, including countries as diverse as Japan, Saudi Arabia and Argentina, was stark. Last month Trump announced he was pulling the United States out of a landmark international climate accord clinched two years ago in Paris. “In the end, the negotiations on climate reflect dissent – all against the United States of America,” Merkel told reporters at the end of the meeting. “And the fact that negotiations on trade were extraordinarily difficult is due to specific positions that the United States has taken.” The summit, marred by violent protests that left the streets of Hamburg littered with burning cars and broken shop windows, brought together a volatile mix of leaders at a time of major change in the global geopolitical landscape. California wildfire forces evacuations as blazes hit U.S
LOS ANGELES - Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate from a fast-moving wildfire burning through steep terrain near California’s central coast on Saturday, after searing temperatures and parched land fueled dozens of blazes in the U.S. West and Southwest. The so-called Alamo Fire, feeding on bone-dry vegetation, nearly tripled in size on Saturday to about 19,000 acres (7,700 hectares) on the border between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. More than 1,000 firefighters have been fighting the blaze that started on Thursday and was 10-percent contained as of Saturday afternoon, officials said. There were 40 uncontained large U.S. wildfires on Saturday, the National Weather Service said. One of the largest was the Truckee Fire in Nevada, which was nearly 100,000 acres (40,460 hectares) in size, according to the InciWeb tracking service. There have been no immediate reports of fire-related deaths. No major injuries have been reported in California’s Alamo fire, according to Santa Barbara County spokeswoman Gina DePinto. She said authorities are working to evacuate people from the blaze, aiming to stop it from reaching wineries to the south and electric transmission lines to the southeast. Heavy rainfall in parts of the West over the winter and spring helped delay the onset of the fire season, but also spurred the growth of dense vegetation that has dried out and become highly combustible in summertime heat. Temperatures in the Southern Californian resort city of Palm Springs climbed to 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) on Friday, breaking a record high for that date set in 1976, according to the National Weather Service. JAKARTA - State fertilizer company PT Pupuk Indonesia distributed 4.35 million tons of subsidized fertilizers to the food crops sector in the first semester of 2017, accounting for 46 percent of the targeted 9.55 million tons. The fertilizers comprised 1.9 million tons of urea-based fertilizers, 1.25 tons of NPK, 432 thousand tons of SP36, 472 thousand tons of ZA, and 296 thousand tons of organic fertilizer, Pupuk Indonesia Corporate Communication Chief Wijaya Laksana said here on Friday. The distribution of subsidized fertilizers to the food crops sector is relatively good this year, he stated. “The current stocks are also quite safe. On a national scale, total stocks in lines III & IV or warehouses and kiosks stood at 856,114 tons as of July 6. The amount is enough to meet the needs for six weeks ahead. The amount excludes stocks in the warehouses of fertilizer plants and provincial governments,” he noted. The national stocks in lines III & IV consist of 446,771 tons of urea-based fertilizers; 208,896 tons of NPK; 40,202 tons of SP36; and ZA and organic fertilizers. Jokowi, Trump meet on sidelines of G20 Summit
JAKARTA - Presidents of Indonesia and the United States, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Donald Trump, held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, on Saturday.
The meeting was held at the Hamburg meeting room Messe Und Congress, according to Chief of the Press, Media and Information Bureau at the Presidential Secretariat Bey Machmudin in a press statement released on Saturday. “I would like to express greetings from millions of your fans in Indonesia. They are interested to welcome you to Indonesia,” Jokowi remarked as an ice breaker of their talks. He also expressed his appreciation to Trump for the visit by US Vice President Michael Pence to Jakarta some time ago. Pence’s visit marked US commitment to strengthen ties with Indonesia. During the meeting, enhancement of cooperation in the economic field and the eradication of terrorism were discussed. In the economic sector, Jokowi conveyed Indonesias concern regarding palm oil exports for biodiesel to the United States. Jokowi also stated that Indonesia would import large amounts of soy. Both Jokowi and Trump agreed to promote mutually beneficial bilateral trade. Indonesia’s trade ties with the United States vary widely, ranging from palm oil and soy to airplanes. In the field of counter-terrorism, Jokowi expressed his appreciation to the United States for its commitment of not being hostile to Islam and cooperating with Muslim countries to combat terrorism.
This is in line with the results of the Riyadh Summit attended by both the leaders last May. “We must pay extra attention to reduce the movement of ISIS not only in Syria and Iraq but also in other areas, including Southeast Asia. The assault and occupation of terrorist groups in Marawi, Philippines, is a testament to the growing threat of terrorism. Jokowi further expressed hope that the counterterrorism cooperation, through the exchange of intelligence information, the cessation of the flow of funds, community development, and deployment of moderate counter-narrative, can be done by both countries. Indonesia ready to face negotiations on guidelines in COP23
JAKARTA - The government of Indonesia is ready to negotiate its interest to be included in the Modality, Procedures and Guidelines (MPGs) for the implementation of the Paris Agreement 2016. The modality, procedures and guidelines will be discussed in the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which will take place in Germany on November 6-17, 2017. Environment and Forestry Ministrys General Director of Climate Change Management Nur Masripatin said in a press statement received by ANTARA News here on Sunday, that the Indonesian delegation would ensure its national interest to be accommodated in the MPGs. The COP-23 will discuss a concept called “One Conference, Two Zones” divided into two major meeting agenda of negotiations and non-negotiations. On the National Focal Point (NFP), Masripatin explained that Indonesia has been preparing some
strategies since June 2017 in the face of the COP-23. It has formed a negotiator team, a delegation secretariat team and a pavilion team. It is also preparing a delegation office; a side event themed “Forest and Land Sector”; a submission draft; a standard operating procedure; and a guideline and position for the Indonesian delegation. In regard to the pavilion of Indonesia, Masripatin noted it would be themed “A Smarter World: Green Solutions for A Changing Climate”, which pictures commitment, readiness, and capability of Indonesia as the part of the solution to mitigate the climate change. “The theme is divided into four sub-themes, which are strategy, plan, implementation, and review,” she said. CAIRO - Egypt aims to double production of its most famous export, the silky soft cotton once known as “white gold”, after a period of slumping output, an Agriculture Ministry spokesman said on Saturday. Hamed AbdelDayem told Reuters production should rise to 1.4 million qintar (160 kg) in the 2017-18 fiscal year that started in July from 700,000 qintar a year earlier. All the cotton will be exported. The government aims to increase the price of the long staple cotton to more than 3000 Egyptian pounds ($168.07) per qintar, which will all be exported, the spokesman said.
Production of the cotton, used in luxury bedding, has fallen sharply since 2011, a year of political upheaval that coincided with looser regulations that degraded the quality of local cotton. Since the 1980s, the people at Ketewel village, Sukawati, have made shrine decorations known as murda craft and this region is now the center of the murda craft industry. Murda artisan Ketut Mita, admitted that his craft business often goes through ups and downs, but added that he has still managed to earn a living with this business. He explained that most customers will order a single set of murda but that on good days he gets as many as ten orders, with each sold for anywhere between IDR 25,000 and IDR 700,000 a piece. In one day Mita can only produce one or two murda as he explained that Ketewel murda frames are carved with intricate ornamental motifs that include images of holy bells, dragons, elephants, mango leaves and others. His wife, I Nyoman Sutini, added that the making of murda ornaments indeed requires special skills and takes a long time because everything is done manually without the help of machines or molds. “To make the bottom frame, we must first form it by using iron and then cast it with concrete. Chinese tourist killed rafting in the rapids of Ayung River
to rescue five of them. Unfortunately, Wang Yumei was taken downstream by the swift current of the Ayung River. After some time the 25 yearold Chinese woman was seen caught between two rocks in the river. Wayan Purnayasa and Kadek Karyasa tried to rescue here but had a hard time retrieving the woman due to the swift current. Eventually they were able to lift her to shore but by that time the victim had no pulse. Wang Yumei was ascertained to have died on the rocks. This incident was then reported to the Payangan police and the victim’s body was evacuated to the Payangan Health Center on Saturday afternoon around 17:00. On Saturday night, the victim’s body was sent to Sanglah Hospital.
Chief of Payangan Police, Gde Endrawan, confirmed the facts of the incident, explaining that based on their investigation the swift current of the Ayung River caused by heavy rains over the last few days was to blame for the victim loosing her life. “According to the testimonies of the witnesses, the river currents were swift at the time of the incident but most of the passengers were able to survive” he said. The police Chief added that the victim’s body only had an external examination at the Payangan Health Center before being sent to Sanglah Hospital. “The victim’s body has been sent to Sanglah Hospital and tomorrow it will be handled by her consulate”, said police chief. Egyptian police kill 16 gunmen in raids targeting militants
CAIRO - Egyptian police officers have shot dead 16 gunmen in two shootouts, the country’s Interior Ministry said on Saturday, adding that most of those killed were fugitive militants linked to recent attacks on security forces in Northern Sinai.

This time, a 25 year old Chinese woman named Wang Yumai, died while rafting on the Ayung, near Begawan hamlet, Melinggih Kelod, Payangan. At the time of the incident, the Ayung was swollen with rain and thus had a swift current. According to the testimony of the rafting guides on duty at Tukad rafting, I Wayan Purnayasa and Kadek Karyasa on Saturday afternoon around 13:30, they started a trip down the river with 13 guests on two rafts. The first raft held 6 guests with I Wayan Purnayasa acting as guide, while the second raft carried 7 guests with Kaedek Karyasa as their guide. After moving southward down the river for about 10 minutes, the rafts reached the first set of rapids 300 meters downriver where Wayan Purnayasa raft was suddenly flipped upside-down leaving the six passengers in the river. Egypt faces an Islamist insurgency led by the Islamic State group in the restive Sinai Peninsula, where hundreds of soldiers and police have been killed since 2013. At least two policemen were killed and nine wounded when their armoured vehicle was hit by an explosion in the Sinai on Saturday, Egypt’s state news agency MENA said. Saturday’s attack came a day after at least 23 soldiers were killed when suicide car bombs tore through two military checkpoints in the region in an attack claimed by Islamic State. It was one of the bloodiest assaults on security forces in years. The Interior Ministry said that gunmen had opened fire on police as they approached a desert training camp for militants in Ismailia.
The officers returned fire, killing 14 militants, five of whom have been identified so far. The camp was used to “subject (recruits) to military training programmes on the use of various types of firearms and manufacture explosive devices...,” the ministry said in a statement. In a separate statement the ministry also said its forces killed two men described as fugitive terrorists in an exchange of gunfire in the city of Giza. The men, who were inside an apartment, opened fire on security forces as soon as the officers approached to arrest them, it said. The ministry said the pair were members of a newly emerged militant group called Hasm, which claimed responsibility for the killing of a homeland security officer outside his home in Qalubiya, a
province just north of Cairo, while on his way to prayers on Friday. Hasm has claimed several attacks around Cairo targeting judges and policemen since last year. Other militant groups such as Hasm, which the government says are linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, are active in Cairo and other cities where they have targeted security forces, judges and progovernment figures. The Brotherhood was outlawed in 2013 after the military ousted one of its leaders, Mohamed Mursi, from the presidency following mass protests. It maintains that it is a peaceful organisation. Islamic State has also intensified attacks on security forces and Coptic Christian civilians in the mainland in recent months, killing about 100 Copts since December. (rtr)
CARACAS - Venezuela’s best-known jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez celebrated a surprise return to his family after being granted house arrest on Saturday with a promise to fight on following three years’ imprisonment for leading anti-government protests. Hours after his pre-dawn transfer from the Ramo Verde military jail, Lopez appeared over a wall of his Caracas house, waving the Venezuelan flag and punching the air before a crowd of supporters who cheered and cried upon seeing him. In a message released by his party, the 46-year-old hardliner urged opposition supporters to continue street protests against President Nicolas Maduro, which are in their fourth month and have led to at least 90 deaths. “If maintaining my fight for freedom means running the risk of returning to a cell in Ramo Verde, I am more than happy to take it,” he said in the message read by Freddy Guevara, the No. 2 in Lopez’s Popular Will party. “Today, I am a prisoner in my house, but so are the Venezuelan people. What kept me going in the toughest days was knowing that whatever suffering I endured was nothing compared to our people.” Lopez’s release, aided by foreign pressure, gave some rare cheer to Venezuela’s opposition who have otherwise seen Maduro give few concessions in their demands for freedom of activists, general elections and fixes for an economic crisis. “Despite being under house arrest, he showed his face to the country,” said Maria Garcia, 36, a business consultant, outside his house. “What we need to do now is stay in the street, because we need to achieve not just the freedom of Leopoldo but also the freedom of the Venezuelan people.” Fresh opposition street rallies were planned for Sunday. PRESIDENTIAL AMBITION A photogenic, Harvard-educated former mayor and economist, Lopez would likely be a popular opposition presidential candidate if able to run in any future vote. He is serving a sentence of nearly 14 years. While the socialist Maduro may be calculating Lopez’s return home will ease pressure on him, opposition leaders presented it as a triumph for their protest strategy and a sign the government was caving. It was not clear, however, how Lopez’s presence at home could materially weaken Maduro, who is plowing ahead with a plan to create a parliamentary superbody that will be able to rewrite the constitution and even dissolve state institutions. This street festival gained international popularity after the American author Ernest Hemingway used the celebration as a backdrop for the characters of his 1926 masterpiece The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta in Spanish). Today, Los Sanfermines continue to be world famous as a place where the brave take the challenge in the Encierro (running of the bulls). However, San Fermin is not only running with bulls. The streets of
Pamplona also come alive with music, fireworks, folkloric events, dancing, singing and religious ceremonies. Los Sanfermines offer visitors an open and hospitable festival, where anything out of the ordinary is welcome and can soon become part of the tradition, as long as it is respectful of others. Los Sanfermines are a festival where nobody is a stranger, where all participants are considered equal, and where the festive spirit never dies throughout its 9 days of celebrations. The festive spirit of Los Sanfermines is important, but this is also a festival with religious origins. Events such as the procession that takes place on the morning of the 7th day, help keep this aspect alive. The religious celebration complements, in perfect harmony, the iconic bull -a totem- and Baco, the god of wine. Everyone in the city including locals and outsiders has a great time over these 9 days, a time that always seems to go by too fast.

Huracan came close to catching a runner when it hooked a horn in the pant leg of a young man entering the bullring, lifting him along the wall before dragging him for a few meters (yards). The man apparently escaped unscathed. The nine-day San Fermin fiesta attracts tens of thousands of partygoers from Spain and abroad. Bali, the only province to experience deflation during Eid 2017
DENPASAR - Bali is the only province that experienced deflation during the period of fasting and Eid ul-Fitr 2017. In June 2017, the province of Bali experienced deflation of -0.12 percent (mtm) or 4.02 percent (yoy). This achievement is much better compared to national monthly and annual inflation. This was revealed by Chief of Bali Representative Office of Bank Indonesia (BI), Causa Iman Karana, in his press conference in Denpasar on Friday (Jul. 7). “This makes Bali the only province in Indonesia to have experienced deflation in June 2017”, he said. Of the 82 cities across Indonesia whose inflation rate is calculated, only three cities experienced deflation in June 2017, and two of these cities are in Bali, namely Singaraja and Denpasar. “Singaraja recorded deflation of -0.64 percent (mtm), while Denpasar recorded a deflation of -0.01 percent (mtm). Therefore, the two cities in Bali sampled for inflation are recorded to have experience deflation”, said Iman happily. The deflation that occurred in June, he added was influenced by the falling prices of food commodities such as garlic, cayenne pepper, red chili and chicken meat. “Maintenance of distribution system and availability of supplies seem to have been key to deflation in both cities and Bali in general”, he added. Aside from food commodities, Causa added that air transportation rates in Bali province during the period of Eid ul-Fitr 2017 also experienced deflation, amounting to -1.23 percent (mtm). “During
the period of Eid ul-Fitr over the past three years, air freight rates are always recorded as amongst the five highest commodities that contribute to inflation in the province of Bali”, he said. Air transport inflation in the Bali province during the three periods respectively consisted of 1.82 percent (2014), 32.93 percent (2015), 19.36 percent (2016) and -1.23 percent (2017). In general, the inflation in some districts / municipality in June 2017 is recorded as follows: Denpasar -0.01 percent (mtm), 2.01 percent (ytd), 4.05 percent (yoy) while Singaraja -0.64 percent (mtm), 1.00 percent (ytd), 3.90 percent (yoy) and Bali 0.12 percent (mtm), 1.82 percent (ytd), 4.02 percent (yoy). In the meantime, the national inflation amounts to 0.69 percent (mtm), 2.38 percent (ytd), and 4.37 percent (yoy). The decrease in air transport tariffs during the peak season in Bali in June 2017 is inseparable from the role of the Bali regional inflation control team (TPID) conducted through related agencies for handling inflation in the air transportation sector. Reasonable tariff applications must now be submitted especially during peak seasons in Bali. This is intended to anticipate a spike in the number of passengers. With limited fleets ticket prices tend to soar, so the TPID proposed to the airlines that they apply for permits from relevant Ministries and agencies to increase the number of flights and obtain temporary permission to use wide-bodied aircrafts during peak seasons. Chairman of Bali’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said on Friday (Jul. 7) that the BAF should have a positive impact on the sales and marketing of the products on display and that these products should be ready for export and able to compete in the international market. According to Wiraputra, craft businesses should only be allowed to participate in the BAF twice before being obliged to upgrade the types of products they offer to export quality or at least to a quality that could be sold throughout Indonesia. He added that different artisans should be given an opportunity to participate
in the BAF every year. In addition, the organizers of the BAF need to be bringing in buyers from across Indonesia as well as from abroad. Since the Baf is a big event, he said, it should be utilized as an opportunity fro businesses to develop their products and their businesses. “Each district / municipality should also be given the same opportunity”, he concluded. The security and comfort of visitors to the BAF also needs to be maintained. Wiraputra pointed out that because Bali is as an international tourist destination, the BAF should be able to attract more tourists and serve to develop and promote Balinese cultural tourism. “The committee should not just be profit oriented, but should also provide education, including about Bali’S handy-craft products. “If it too difficult to implement every year, then it should only be held once every two years”, he said. Growing awareness about need to protect turtles
DENPASAR - Before the 1990’s the turtle trade was booming in Bali and turtle meat was commonly consumed as satay, lawar, and other delicacies. Turtles were and still are also used for ceremonies in Bali. However growing concerns about the fate of the turtle species has been growing and there are now measures been taken to ensure that the turtles survive. Such measures include the creation of the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) in Serangan Village, South Denpasar that is chaired by I Made Sukanta.
Slowly but surely, public awareness about the need to protect the turtles is growing. People will sometimes collect turtle eggs form the shore to bring them to this center where they can be protected until they hatch. The people of Serangan are particularly careful about no longer slaughtering turtles for food. “There used to be a turtle trade here, but now people have understood the negative impact this has on the environment”, said Sukanta. Every day, Sukanta and the management team of the TCEC come to Serangan Village to take care of the turtle eggs. Sukanta said that the TCEC currently has 95 egg nests with an estimated 9,300 eggs. Turtle eggs found on the beach are brought to the conservation site so that they will not be eaten by other animals or accidentally trampled. The eggs take anywhere from between 45 to 75 days to hatch , depending on the species of turtle. A single turtle can spawn hundred of eggs a year. Once the eggs have hatched at the center, they are released back into the sea. “On average a turtle produce 100 to 130 several times a year”, he explained. The center is therefore
able to provide turtles for ceremonies. As Sukanta explained, it is better to hand over a turtle that has already laid 300 eggs that for people to hunt turtles who might not have laid their eggs yet. The TCEC only takes care of a few turtles so that they can provide for the community’s ceremonial needs. Request for turtles must have recommendations from several institutions, including the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI). In 2016, The TCEC received a total of 47 requests fro turtles for ceremonial purposes. In addition to serving as a centre of conservation and education, the TCEC as serves as a tourist attraction where foreign visitors of all ages come to see the turtle conservation process. (kmb42)

Demand for organic fertilizer reaches 50 tons each day
DENPASAR - Organic fertilizers are in great demand by all kinds of people. In fact Tabanan alone provides 50 tons of organic fertilizer every day. Organic fertilized is of course used by the agricultural sector but also in small nurseries, hotels, villas and fish ponds. The use of organic fertilizer is not only for agriculture but also varies, such as for nurseries, industry, hotels, villas and fish ponds. Foreigners are also interested in using organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer entrepreneur, A.A. Nyoman Wijana, said that the annual demand for organic fertilizer can reach 350 tons. He and nine other organic fertilizer producers can supply 50 tons. “ I can only produce 10 tons”, he explained during a during a press conference held by the HKTI recently. The price of organic fertilizer is six times cheaper than urea fertilizer at only IDR 950 per kg but is nonetheless a very profitable business. “So, by getting
involved in waste processing you can become rich, so people should grab this opportunity” he said. Wijana explained that organic fertilizer is more effective than urea fertilizer. His organic fertilizer is made from 15 tons of waste consisting of a variety of non-toxic sources including sewage, sawdust etc. After being processed, the source materials amount to less than the organic fertilizer obtained so it is no wonder that people are competing to get their hands on waste materials. “ We care about eh environment so we compete to get the water materials. There is tight competition but we work closely”, he said. He refute accusations of organic fertilizer causing weeds to grow that could disrupt agricultural crops, explaining that organic fertilizer is best used on the land before cultivation begins. Weeds are then crushed by the tractors during planting, so they will not disrupt the intended crops, he said. (kmb2)

Education agency and education council affirm to be lawful TABANAN - The process of student admission with zoning system seems to still raise a variety of problems. In Tabanan, there are at least two subdistricts getting the attention namely Tabanan and Kediri. Many students are still not accommodated due to the lack of private schools in the regions. Legislative and executive ranks with the education council and clinic immediately made coordination after the plenary session. As a result, a number of public schools are still possible to add classrooms. The addition of classroom is considered not to violate the rules because in the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017 is set forth that schools are allowed to increase the number of student admission by adding classrooms, but should not exceed 11 classes. “On average, there is an addition of two classes in order to be able to accommodate students who have not been received by school. This does not violate the rules of new student admission or PPDB,” said the Head of the Tabanan Education Agency, I Wayan Adnyana. Further, he said that new student admission surely remains to comply with the procedures as in the previous new student admission. For example, the SMPN 1 Tabanan junior high school adding three classes from eight to 11 classes is considered not a problem. It has been set forth in the Regulation of Minister of Education and Culture No.17/2017. “In the ministerial regulation, it is also set forth that schools having many enthusiasts can be opened up to 11 classes,” he explained. For SMPN 1 Tabanan, there is an addition of 114 students where 20 students of them have been already registered because the requirements are already met, while the 90 other students have enrolled on the last day of registration, Friday (Jul. 7), while the SMPN 2 added 119 students from the addition plan as many as 128 students. This happens because 9 students of them have passed the selection because on the student admission there is similarity of scores. Meanwhile, the SMPN 3 Tabanan got 81 additional students. Wayan Adnyana admitted the additional classrooms and implementation of double shifts for three public schools in Tabanan subdistrict is still enforced. “Since this is a new rule, surely it needs a process, while preparing school facilities. Possibly two years ahead this program can be more maximal,” he explained. Head of the Tabanan Education Council, I Wayan Madra Suartana, attending the meeting of the Commission IV of the Tabanan House of Representatives, said that re-opening of student admission at the SMPN 1 Tabanan can only be followed by those who have registered. “Other than those cannot,” he explained. In the meantime, Principal of the SMPN 1 Tabanan, I Made Sucahya, said that he cannot do much because the addition of the class has been already a decision from the legislative and the education agency. “I do not want to apply double shifts. Probably, the students will put into the existing class even though it exceeds 32 students. With the addition of approximately 90 students, there will be at least 42 students in one class,” he explained. Associated with the recruitment system, he emphasized that it refers to the prevailing system, namely through exam score (NEM) and achievement. “There is no registration made in the poor student track,” he said. He already denied the names of students recommended by the Tabanan education agency in last minutes of the student enrollment period. When asked about the basis of recommendation, he mentioned it refers to circular issued by the regional secretary of Tabanan and the education agency. Besides, it refers to the latest circular from the ministry of education and culture. “There is a recent circular of the ministry of education and culture equally used as the basis. Actor Shia LaBeouf arrested in Georgia on disorderly conduct charge
GEORGIA - Actor Shia LaBeouf was arrested in Georgia on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication early on Saturday after he became unruly in downtown Savannah, police said. LaBeouf, best known for his role as Sam Witwicky in the “Transformers” action movie franchise, was in the bustling City Market neighborhood before dawn when he approached a bystander and a police officer and asked for a cigarette, Savannah police said in a statement. “When LaBeouf wasn’t given a cigarette, he became disorderly, using profanities and vulgar language in front of the women and children present,” the statement said. He became aggressive toward the officer when asked to leave, police said, and when the officer tried to arrest LaBeouf he ran into a hotel lobby. Eventually he was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and obstruction, and booked into the Chatham County jail, authorities said. He was released a few hours later, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said. A spokeswoman for LaBeouf, 31, did not return a call or email seeking comment. LaBeouf was in Savannah to act in independent movie “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” according to trade publication Variety. This is the latest in a series of arrests for LaBeouf. In January, he was arrested after a scuffle outside a New York museum where he was chanting, “He will not divide us,” during a live-streamed protest against President Donald Trump. In 2014 he was arrested after disturbing a performance of the musical “Cabaret” on Broadway in New York, which led to him pleading guilty to a disorderly conduct violation and receiving outpatient care for addiction. Western Canada wildfires prompt state of emergency, evacuations KAMLOOPS - Some 180 wildfires raged over a massive section of Western Canada’s British Columbia on Saturday, prompting the evacuation of 3,000 households and the province’s first state of emergency in 14 years. The blazes were scattered across hundreds of kilometers of the interior portion of the province, burning through bone-dry forests used for logging and rolling grasslands that are home to ranches. High temperatures and winds complicated firefighting efforts. “The weather situation is not favorable,” said John Rustad, provincial minister in charge of firefighting operations. “There is very aggressive fire behavior that makes it very difficult to directly attack.” The spate of wildfires began on Friday, when 138 new fires were reported, most of them sparked by lightning in dry electrical storms. No injuries or deaths were reported. Provincial officials said they did not know how much damage had been caused, though evacuees said they had left behind farm animals and witnessed destruction of homes and other buildings.
Some evacuees made their way to a make-shift emergency center at a sporting facility in Kamloops, some 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Vancouver. Some people said they were not given adequate time to pack up their goods. Others, who had been away from their homes on vacation, feared they would lose cherished belongings in the fires. Chalky red fire retardant dust was splashed on some vehicles that passed through areas that were sprayed with the substance from “water bomber” planes used to fight the fire. Canada’s federal government on
Saturday offered to help British Columbia respond to the fast-spreading wildfires, though provincial authorities said they may have enough resources already. Rustad said that he expected about 260 personnel from other jurisdictions in Canada to support a team of more than 1,600 people helping respond to the fire. “We are bringing a tremendous amount of resources to bear,” he said, noting that their main priority was “to keep people safe.” British Columbia last declared a state of emergency in August 2003, which was also to deal with wildfires.
