NEW YORK — Jay Z will headline the Global Citizen Festival on Sept. 27 in New York’s Central Park. Organizers announced Wednesday that fun., Carrie Underwood, The Roots, No Doubt and Tiesto also will perform. Tickets are free for the event, but must be earned through acts meant to help end extreme poverty around the world. VIP tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster. The festival is designed to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly meeting

and put pressure on world leaders to address the needs of the world’s poor. Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys and John Mayer headlined the festival last year. Neil Young, Foo Fighters and the Black Keys performed in 2012, when the festival debuted.

NEW YORK — Idina Menzel is bringing Broadway to baseball. The Tonywinning performer will sing the national anthem at the MLB All-Star Game on July 15 in Minneapolis. Menzel will also perform during the pre-game ceremony, including a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young.” The game at Target Field will air on Fox, where country singer Joe Nichols will sing “God Bless America.” MLB All-Star week will also include a Saturday concert by Grammywinning rockers Imagine Dragons at the TCF Bank Stadium. JAKARTA - Both sides claimed victory Wednesday in Indonesia’s tightest and most divisive presidential election since the end of authoritarian rule, as unofficial tallies showed Jakarta governor Joko Widodo leading ex-general Prabowo Subianto. Widodo, the first serious presidential contender without roots in the era of dictator Suharto, declared victory in the world’s third largest democracy after the tallies from reliable polling agencies showed him leading by four to five percentage points. But shortly afterwards Prabowo, who has admitted human rights abuses during the Suharto era and was formerly married to one of the strongman’s daughters, also claimed victory. Prabowo said survey institutes used by his campaign team showed that he and running mate Hatta Rajasa “have received the support and mandate from the people of Indonesia”. A spokesman for Widodo’s campaign, Anies Baswedan, called on Prabowo and his running mate to behave like “statesmen”. “For me, all credible survey institutes declared our victory at a minimum of five percent,” he said. It was an unprecedented standoff in Indonesia since Suharto’s downfall in 1998. The only two other direct presidential elections since then were won resoundingly by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The unofficial tallies that Widodo’s party relied on, known as “quick counts”, have accurately predicted the winner of previous elections. However official results are not due for around two weeks, due to the complexity of holding elections across the archipelago of more than 17,000 islands that spans three time zones. Provincial road at Pengotan planted with banana tree Bali Post

BANGLI - Provincial road of Bangli-Kintamani, precisely at Pengotan village, was planted with banana tree. It was not known for sure who deliberately planted the banana trees. Allegedly the planting of banana trees on the pothole was carried out as a kind of protest because people were upset with the government that so far did not repair the road. Moreover, the most serious condition of the pothole lay near the corner. “Probably, people were upset because the road is never paved, so they decided to plant the pothole with banana tree,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Bangli House, Nyoman Basma, separately said that he had seen the banana tree standing in the middle of the provincial road. Basma assessed it was the expression of public disappointment over the badly damaged road condition. “Indeed, there is a pothole at the location of banana tree planting. Such road condition frequently kindled traffic accidents. Perhaps, it is a kind of public expression of disappointment,” he said. As revealed by the local ashram leader, Ida Pandita Nabe Mpu Parama Daksa Nata Ratu Bagus, the victim had come to his ashram for medication for the second time. Chief of Pengotan customary village, Wayan Kopok, said on Tuesday (Jul 8) the banana tree planted in the middle of the road was first known around 07:00 a.m. He admitted not to know exactly who planted the trees. Even, being curious, Kopok had asked to residents about the man who put the banana trees. But the residents around the location said they did not know for sure. “So far, they did not know who planted the banana tree,” he said. Kopok suspected the banana tree planting was intentionally committed by someone who was upset with the road condition that never got improvement. Moreover, traffic accident frequently occurred at the location. He mentioned at least there were 7 riders of motorcycle getting accident at that location.

SINGARAJA - A new breakthrough has been executed to improve services for the convenience of pedestrians. The Head of Buleleng Transportation Agency, Gede Gunawan AP, said on Tuesday (Jul 8) that he had a strategy specifically to maintain the pedestrian safety. One of which was by installing a traffic barrier at some vulnerable points of highways. Location of the barrier installation, said Gunawan, would be at some points of sidewalk and curves of roadway such as at the intersection of Jalan Udayana and Jalan Ahmad Yani. Installation of the steel traffic barrier was intended to protect road users from the hazards of reckless motorcycle riders. “The traffic barrier for the safety of pedestrians

began to be installed at some points considered vulnerable for pedestrians. Primarily, it was installed in the areas frequently passed through by motorcycles and cars at high speed,” said Gunawan. Gunawan confirmed the budget for the traffic barrier was estimated to cost IDR 117 million. The installation would also be equipped with ornamental plants to give beautiful and attractive impression. “The construction has not completed yet. We are going to cooperate with the Buleleng Sanitation and Landscape Agency (DKP) to complement the traffic barrier and ornamental plants. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Child TB problem far greater than thought

PARIS - Twenty-five percent more children are falling ill with TB than the UN had thought, with more than 650,000 hit by the disease each year in the 22 worst affected countries, specialists said Wednesday. Reporting in The Lancet, they said that about 53 million children under 15 are living with latent TB infection, a condition that can develop into active TB at any time. A contagious disease of the lungs, TB is caused by a microbe called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Millions of people are latent cases, meaning they are infected with the germ yet have yet to develop any symptoms. Last year the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated there were 530,000 cases of active TB among children younger than 15 years in 2012. But this estimate was based on reporting by paediatric doctors -- a technique faulted by many experts as its methods and reliability vary hugely from country to country. The new estimate is based on a mathematical model based on each of 22 countries where TB falls into the category of a “high burden” for health. It factored in the national prevalence of TB in adults, the likely risk of household exposure from infected relatives and the effectiveness of vaccination against the disease. The findings suggested that about 7.6 million children younger

NEW YORK - That obesity can cut life short by causing strokes and other illnesses comes as no surprise, but a study reported on Tuesday quantifies the toll: The most extreme cases cut a person’s lifespan more than cigarettes. The analysis, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, is the largest-ever study of the effect of extreme obesity on mortality. It found that people who are extremely obese -- for someone of average height, carrying an extra 100 lb (45 kg) or more -- die 6.5 to 13.7 years earlier than peers

with a healthy weight. The study, based on data from 20 large studies of people in the United States, Sweden and Australia, comes as rates of obesity have soared. Worldwide, nearly 30 percent of people, or 2.1 billion, are either obese or overweight. “Overweight” is defined as having a body mass index, or weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters, of 25.0 to 29.9. At the low end, that is 150 lb (68 kg) for someone 5 feet 5 inches (1.65 meters) tall. “Obesity” means a BMI of 30 or higher (180 lb at 5 feet 5

inches). “Extreme obesity” is a BMI of 40 or higher, or 241 lb at that height. The study included data on 9,564 adults with extreme obesity and 304,011 of normal weight. The overall risk of dying at any given time rose continuously with increasing BMI within the extremely obese group, mostly due to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. People with a BMI of 40 to 44.9 lost an average of 6.5 years of life. Those with a BMI of 45 to 49.9 lost 8.9 years, while BMIs of 50 to 54.9 cut 9.8 years and 55 to 59.9 cut 13.7 years. Among people

with a healthy weight, those who smoked lost about 8.9 years. The study, by scientists at the National Cancer Institute, did not calculate whether less extreme obesity shortens life, and the researchers could not say whether the results would hold for poorer, non-Western populations. Because extreme obesity was so rare in the past, it was not possible to calculate its effect on mortality until now. The new calculation is unlikely to cause people with extreme obesity to shed pounds, for “that presupposes that the main reason people don’t lose weight is lack

of willpower, and I’d argue that’s not the case,” said Dr Lee Kaplan, director of the weight center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “But it could have a beneficial effect if it galvanizes society to change in ways that stop promoting obesity and to develop aggressive treatments for extreme obesity.” In the United States, 36 percent of adults are obese, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The incidence of BMIs of 40 or higher has more than quadrupled since the mid-1980s, and about one in six U.S. adults is extremely obese.

Despite the spring located in the sea sand, the water emanating does not taste salty but fresh. Based on the inspiration, it was then established a simple shrine (using tree branches) at several locations. Until now, the temple had complete buildings funded by the donations from devotees who did purificatory rite and had a vow. He said the temple priest Mangku Gede Linggih who found the temple site has passed away. As the succes-

sor, he was replaced by his wife Jro Mangku Lingsir Mangku Sumpang living in Gilimanuk. Meanwhile, Winada added that every full moon, there were always devotees coming from all over Bali and even from Java. They all came to do purificatory rite directly on the beach. But at high tides, the temple attendant had taken holy water for purificatory rite from the three springs and kept it in the temple area. Having performed the purificatory rite, devotees entered into the three temple areas. Devotees said prayers at the shrine located in the innermost courtyard. Here lay a number of three-tiered meru shrines as well as the shrine respectively dedicated for the veneration of the Lord Kasiap, Balian and Lord Lumajang. In the meantime, on the west area outside the main building and few meters from the three springs sat a shrine. It was used to venerate Goddess Ayu Giri Putri Dapdapsari. Then, on the north side could be found a shrine located rather far away with a complete building. Here, according to Winada, was venerated the Goddess Ayu Mas Melanting. During the visit, a number of devotees, mostly from outside Jembrana, came to say prayers. They delivered various invocations, some of which related to recovery from illness, while some others asked for a job opportunity. The three springs used for purificatory rite were arranged by means of concrete manholes at three sites which were adjacent to one other. The mass cremation ceremony along with atma wadana / nyekah was held at the local hamlet hall and cemetery as well as officiated over by Ida Bhagawan Taman Sekar from Griya Jelijih Megati. Chairman of the Ritual Committee, I Ketut Sukantera, said the mass cremation including the Pitri Yajña and atma wadana at Kikian customary village, Pupuan Sawah village was made for 25 bodies and one newly dead body where each body was charged at IDR 7.5 million. “Today (Tuesday—Ed), we conduct a mass cremation and nyekah ngelanus while the meajarajar (pilgrimage) will be carried out the next day (Wednesday),” he said. Chief of Kikian customary village, I Nyoman Suardiana, explained the mass cremation was held for the first time based on the convention and customary bylaw of Kikian. And for the next mass cremation ceremony would be routinely carried out every five years. Meanwhile, the mass cremation at Jatiluwih customary village, Penebel subdistrict was made for

41 adult bodies and 45 toddler’s bodies. The cremation itself was attended by legislator of Tabanan House Nyoman Arnawa and Wayan Tamba as well as subdistrict head of Penebel Agus Hendra Manik. Other than Pitri Yajña, the ritual activity was also resumed with Manusha Yajña ceremony followed by 36 residents. The budget incurred by family for each adult body was IDR 6 million, while for toddler’s body was IDR 300,000 and metatah or tooth filing was IDR 600,000 per person. “We regularly hold a mass cremation every 5 years. With these activities, we do hope to strengthen the brotherhood and togetherness having been established so far,” he said. from the regent and deputy regent of Tabanan. It had something to do with the togetherness and unity as the basis of government in building the Tabanan region in accordance with the vision of prosperous, secure and having achievement. “Let’s support all kinds of government programs. JERUSALEM — The Israeli army on Wednesday intensified its offensive on the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, striking Hamas sites and killing at least 8 people on the second day of a military operation it says is aimed at quenching rocket fire against Israel. The offensive has set off the heaviest fighting between Israel and the Islamic militant group Hamas since an eight-day battle in November 2012. Militants unleashed rocket salvos deep into Israeli territory, and Israel mobilized thousands of forces along the Gaza border for a possible ground invasion into the Palestinian territory. Since the offensive began Tuesday, Israel has attacked more than 400 sites in Gaza, killing at least 32 people. The strikes from air and sea came after militants fired more than 160 rockets at Israel, including one that reached the northern Israeli city of Hadera for the first time. The city is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Gaza. The army said it attacked more than 160 sites in Gaza early Wednesday, including 118 concealed rockets launching sites, six Hamas compounds — including naval police and national security compounds — 10 militant command centers, weapons storage facilities and 10 tunnels used for

militant activity and to ferry supplies in from Egypt. The border between Gaza and Egypt has effectively been closed for months. Gaza health official Ashraf AlKedra said Wednesday’s airstrikes killed one militant in south Gaza, as well as an Islamic Jihad operative, his mother, and four siblings in northern Gaza. SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles Wednesday morning into the sea off its east coast, a South Korean defense official said, in a continuation of a recent series of missile and rocket test launches. The missiles, presumed to Scudseries missiles, were fired from the southwest Hwanghae province and flew across the country before landing in the ocean, the official said requesting anonymity citing department rules. After all, my husband is of German descent and he is extremely happy with the result.” Muller was one of about 2,000 people who packed into the Vila Germanica complex to watch the game on two large TV screens, drink beer and eat typical German dishes like wurst sausages and hackpeter — raw ground pork with onions and spices. Muller said most people at the special early edition of Oktoberfest seemed resigned to the loss and sad. “But they are dealing with all that by drinking more beer, which helps them realize that it’s no use crying, that life must go on and that Germany played much better and deserved to win,” she said. Vila Germanica’s architecture resembles houses in a traditional German village and the shops inside sell beer mugs, handicrafts and traditional German clothing. Every year, it hosts an Oktoberfest that attracts upward of 450,000 people. This year’s festival will run from Oct. 6-26. Blumenau’s tourism secretary, Ricardo Stodiek, said the city’s Oktoberfest is the globe’s second largest — losing out only to the one held in Munich. German immigrants started arriving in Blumenau in 1850 and today 30 percent of the city’s 320,000 residents are of German descent, Stodiek said. Before the match, Stodiek said that “we in Blumenau attach a lot of value to the culture of our forefathers, but like all good Brazilians we will root for Brazil to win the Cup.”
