JLo won’t perform in World Cup opener in Brazil Associated Press
SAO PAULO — Jennifer Lopez won’t perform the World Cup’s official song alongside fellow artists Pitbull and Claudia Leitte during the tournament’s opening ceremony in Brazil, FIFA officials said Sunday. Soccer’s governing body said Lopez cannot perform at Thursday’s event as earlier planned because of unspecified “production issues.” The singer’s representatives didn’t explain the reason
why Lopez wouldn’t be joining the act. They only confirmed the announcement in an emailed response, saying “regretfully Jennifer Lopez will not be attending this year’s World Cup opening ceremonies.” FIFA said in a news release that Cuban-American rapper Pitbull and Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte will sing the official tune “We Are One” before Brazil takes on Croatia at Thursday’s opening game in Sao Paulo. NEW YORK — A veteran and a newbie made history Sunday at the Tony Awards. Audra McDonald became the show’s most decorated actress, while Bryan Cranston won a best actor trophy for his Broadway debut. McDonald won her sixth Tony for portraying Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill,” putting her ahead of five-time winners Angela Lansbury and the late Julie Harris for the most competitive wins by an actress. Among those she thanked were her parents for not medicating their hyperactive child. The latest win — for best lead actress in a play — also makes McDonald the first grand-slam performance winner. She previously won as best featured actress in a play (“A Raisin in the Sun” and “Master Class”), best lead actress in a musical (“The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess”) and best featured actress in a musical (“Ragtime” and “Carousel”). Joni Sugiharto, one of the initiators, said the concert involving his fellows from various countries was the continuation of a series of anniversary celebration of the BaliTV.
“As a member of society, we should be concerned, especially with our children that are having problems in prison. They are all our fellows,” said Joni.
On that account, the children who underwent detention in Karangasem Prison and young people getting involved in problem should be fostered. By holding this charity
concert, the donation would be used to purchase musical instruments or painting tools. “We will use the proceedings for donation to children in prison. We will not give them as such, but purchase them musical instruments such as guitar, painting tools, and can immediately teach them and guide them,” said Joni. He hoped those who were undergoing detention could play the musical instrument or paint accordingly. “Hopefully, when they are out of
prison, they have a skill,” hoped the long-haired man. Such pattern was expected to have a positive influence, in which the children who were currently serving a period of detention could be received positively after their release. Not contrarily, they were isolated because they also had a bright future and plenty of time to learn. “With this concert, we are able to give a donation in the form of musical instruments. Russian citizen snatched, perpetrator arrested Bali Post
DENPASAR - A citizen of Russia named Ilya Kandybin, 29, was a victim of snatching when crossing on Jalan Uma Alas, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta, Badung, on Monday (Jun 2). A few days later, the North Kuta Police officers managed to arrest the perpetrator, I Made Putra Pica, 25, but police are still hunting the fellow of the perpetrator with initials IK. When interrogated by the officers of North Kuta Police, Putra claimed to always take action with IK, which played the role as a jockey aka motor rider, while Putra acted as the executor. Before taking action both perpetrators always rode Honda Vario Techno motorcycle with a fake license plate DK 4175 DF. After seeing their target, both perpetrators dogged and waited for the right time to act. Then, IK approached the prospective victims with the motorcycle, while Putra was ready to do seizing. “Putra always takes action together with his fellow IK, who is now a fugitive,” said Chief of North Kuta Police, Ronny R Eppang, Sunday (Jun 8). Further, he explained that the same mode was also committed by both suspects against Ilya. At that time, the victim living at Tegal Jaya hamlet, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta, Badung, was mugged when stopping at roadside, Monday (Jun 2). “The same mode was also committed by perpetrators while snatching last Monday around 10:00 p.m.,” he explained. After obtaining the bag that contained a Samsung S3 hand phone and a number of foreign currencies, Putra and IK ran away to the road among paddy fields. Being aware of her bag to have been snatched, Ilya crashed the motorcycle of the suspect to fall. “The suspect promptly took the motorcycle and fled, while the victim chose to report to the case to North Kuta Police,” he added. Having been investigated, police got the identity of Putra and immediately arrested the perpetrator in his boarding house at Campuan hamlet, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta Badung. Meanwhile, another suspect IK managed to escape and was still at large. “We arrested the perpetrator around 08:00 a.m. In addition, we also secured a Samsung S3 hand phone, a number of foreign currencies and Honda Vario Techno motorcycle,” he said. NPF exploits entire potentials of Nusa Penida

SEMARAPURA - Having long been initiated, ultimately the Nusa Penida Festival (NPF) was vibrantly opened at Sampalan Sport Stadium, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Sunday (Jun 8). The NPF drew thousands of local residents who had long thirst for entertainment. The NPF attempted to exploit the whole potential of Nusa Penida to build the first foundation in this underdeveloped tourism area. The NPF was inaugurated in person by the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta. The regent could answer entire the criticism and condemnation against him because he had not been able to make many changes to his native land since the beginning of his leadership. He considered the festival the first step to answer the criticism. “Development takes time, funds and processes. Give us time to think and work for you. I admit to have not been able to do much since the beginning of my term,” he said. Suwirta added that the three clusters of Nusa Penida Island were indeed unique and exciting destinations amidst the excel-
lence as territory of waters. It had become another attraction and spirit that should bring in prosperity to its residents. Unfortunately, the potential of the islands were virtually untouchable throughout the year, especially the largest island, Nusa Gede. He wanted the NPF could provide a positive impact for the tourism development plan of Nusa Penida. “It is the first. Hopefully, it can encourage the tourism development and increase the number of tourist visits,” he said. With the introduction to the entire potential of Nusa Penida, it was expected to attract investors to invest in all sectors. After the NPF, his party would look at the extent of the impact on tourism in Nusa Penida. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Wayan Sujana, said the NPF was budgeted at IDR 615 million. However, the activity was estimated to spend a budget of IDR 1.3 billion. After the opening with a fragmentary performance by SMAN 1 Nusa Penida high school, the event included an exhibition of local products, culinary competition, cultural
carnival to dance and other performances. Then, on Monday (Jun 9) was filled with exhibition and photography, environmental camp, inauguration of marine protected areas (NOA), painting and quiz competition, village and Crystal Bay excursion, transplantation of coral reefs and a parade of music and entertainment. On Tuesday (Jun 10), the festival would be filled with blood donation and mass sports, and photography exhibition, seminar, regatta, fashion show as well as Lembongan, Ceningan and Jungut Batu excursion. As planned, the NPF would be closed on Wednesday (Jun 11) with clean-up activities in coastal areas, mangrove planting and transplantation of coral reefs. In addition to drawing the attention of local community, the NPF was also visited by hundreds of foreign travelers. Most of them were curious about the NPF. “Tourism in the mainland and overland has not been balanced. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Dozens of new flora, fauna species in Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar — A dragon fish with intricate, mazelike markings on every scale, a frog with rough, chocolatecolored skin and a ginger plant are among more than two dozen flora and fauna species found in Myanmar since it emerged from a half-century of military rule and isolation. The World Wildlife Fund said Thursday the discoveries by global scientists in the last two years highlight the need to invest in conservation as the biologically diverse nation of 60 million revs up its economic engines and opens up to foreign investment. Already, it is starting to succumb to many of the pressures felt by neighbors in Southeast Asia, from deforestation and illegal wildlife trade to mining and the development of hydropower. The 26 plants and animals newly identified in Myanmar include a species of dragon fish, which are hugely popular in the Asian aquatic world. The so-called “scribbled arowana,” is creating a buzz on the aquarium fish blogosphere because of its unheardof complex, maze-like markings on every individual scale. Previously unidentified by scientists, a ginger plant collected from a single region in the cloud forests of the western state of Rakhine had been hiding in plain sight at local markets, WWF said. And a chocolate-spotted frog, a member of the Amolops family, was discovered in a mountain range that stretches along Myanmar’s western border and India. Win Myo Thu, co-founder of the local environmental group EcoDev, believes scientists have only scraped the surface of what is
yet to be discovered in his country. In part because Myanmar was cut off from the rest of the world for such a long time, limiting the ability to carry out a proper inventory, “there is a huge, huge knowledge gap,” he said. “The more research that is done, the more species we are going to find.” He too worries about the impact economic development will have on the country’s “biotreasures.” “Unfortunately, no one is paying attention to protecting biodiversity,” he said. “They say OK, we will do this or that, but on ground it’s an entirely different story.” Many of the national parks are protected, but only on paper. The WWF said some of the more remarkable and charismatic discoveries made in 2012-13 elsewhere in the Mekong Delta region of Southeast Asia included: — The Cambodian tailorbird — a small, dark warbler with an orange-red tuft on its head discovered, surprisingly, in that country’s capital, Phnom Penh, during spot checks for the avian flu.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The first video of life on Arctic sea ice from a polar bear point of view has been released by the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency on Friday released a clip recorded by a camera attached to the collar of a female polar bear without cubs in the Beaufort Sea north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The necks of polar bear males are wider than their heads and collars slide off. The clip shows the bear pursuing a seal under water, dunking a frozen seal into seawater and interacting with a male who might be a suitor. The cameras are part of a study to find out how polar bears, listed as a threatened species, are responding to sea ice loss from global warming. Scientists in the Beaufort are generally limited to about six weeks of field work each spring, between the time it’s light enough to work and before ice begins to break up. “It’s all information that we wouldn’t be able to get otherwise,” said Todd Atwood, research leader for the USGS Polar Bear Research Program, from his office in Anchorage. The collars were attached in April and collected eight to 10 days later as a test run of how they eventually will be deployed for longer periods. Cameras were attached to two bears in 2013, but the batteries could not handle Arctic temperatures, Atwood said. Redesigned collars were attached to four females that already were going to be captured for blood samples on a study of behavior and energy expenditure led by USGS research biologist Anthony Pagano. The bears already carry collars with GPS recording data and accelerometers, an activity sensor that records whether a bear is resting, walking, swimming or hunting. The USGS is part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Polar Bear Recovery Team that will draft a Polar Bear Conservation Management Plan to meet requirements of the Endangered Species Act. The law requires the plan to guide activities for polar bear conservation.

So, it was very worrying if the entire tourism potential was under control of foreigners. “We’ve got a program of tourism awareness movement. It needs reviving. I am confident that local people can afford, but the carrying capacity must also be ready,” he said. He added that today people might not go up against investment because the investors were not enemies. Local communities should play a role in it. However, the negative impacts should be minimized. When an area became tourism area, in addition to resulting in positive effects, it would definitely bring in a variety of negative impacts, ranging from security, rising prices of basic needs, incoming of the culture unsuitable with local culture to drugs and prostitution. Thus, local community should be prepared mentally to face a variety of negative impacts. However, a resident of Dukuh Pulu Kaja hamlet, Mambang village, East Selemadeg, takes advantage of the dry banana sheath to produce the work of painting with high economic value. Yet since many people are still unfamiliar, the banana sheath painting has not been considered by market. Made Darma Yasa, the painter, admitted that he initiated the marketing of his banana sheath painting in 2009 at the villas in Tabanan. “Indeed, this work of art has not yet widely recognized by market due to marketing constraints. All this time, the marketing is only carried out to a number of villas in Tabanan,” he said. US job market recovers losses Associated Press
WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy has finally regained the jobs lost to the Great Recession. But go easy on the hallelujahs. The comeback is far from complete. Friday’s report from the government revealed an economy healing yet marked by deep and lasting scars. The downturn that began 6½ years ago accelerated wrenching changes that have left many Americans feeling worse off than they did the last time the economy had roughly the same number of jobs it does now. Employers added 217,000 workers in May, more than enough to surpass the 138.4 million jobs that existed when the recession began in December 2007. But even as the unemployment rate has slipped to 6.3 percent from 10 percent at the depth of the recession, the economy still lacks its former firepower. To many economists, the job figures are both proof of the sustained recovery and evidence of a painful transformation in how Americans earn a living. “The labor market recovery has been disappointing,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services. “Even with the new peak, there is still a great deal of slack.” There are still 1.49 million construction jobs missing. Factories have 1.65 million fewer workers. Many of these jobs have been permanently replaced by new technologies: robots, software and advanced equipment that speeds productivity and requires less manpower, said Patrick O’Keefe, director of economic research for the advisory and consulting firm CohnReznick. “When heavy things need to be moved, we now have machines to do it,” O’Keefe said. “It is unlikely in the manufacturing sector that we recover much of the losses.” Government payrolls have shrunk, taking middle class pay with them. Local school districts have 255,400 fewer employees. The U.S. Postal Service has shed 194,700 employees. And during the economic recovery, more people have left the job market than entered it. Just 58.9 percent of working-age Americans have jobs, down from 62.7 percent at the start of the recession. Mike Evangelist, a policy analyst at NELP, said the nation’s evolution away from goods production to a more service-oriented economy has slowed hiring in many mid- and higher-paying sectors. The weak job gains in those sectors have slowed overall pay growth, giving consumers less money to spend and depriving the recovery of its usual vigor. Relative to much of Europe and Japan, lower-wage jobs have accounted for much of the job growth in the United States. About a quarter of U.S. jobs were in lowpaying industries in 2011, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a 34-nation association based in Paris. That was the highest proportion among developed nations, the OECD said. In 2001, the United States had ranked fifth in low-paying jobs. Employers have been shifting to more part-time workers, noted John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo. More than 27.2 million Americans now work part time, about 2.5 million more than before the recession. Roughly a quarter of those workers would prefer to be full time, according to the May jobs report. And while the number of full-time workers has risen during the 5-year-old recovery, the economy still has 2.9 million fewer of them.

TOKYO — Japan raised its estimate for economic growth in the JanuaryMarch quarter as investment by companies was stronger than first thought. The government said Monday that the economy grew an annualized 6.7 percent in the quarter. The initial growth estimate was 5.9 percent. From the previous quarter, the economy expanded 1.6 percent. Japan’s economy, the world’s third largest, is expected to contract in the current quarter due to a sales tax hike on April 1 that has sapped some momentum from consumer spending. Preliminary data show demand slowing in April. A corresponding decline in imports helped push the current account back into surplus in April for the first time in four months, the Finance Ministry reported Monday. The month’s surplus was 131 billion yen ($1.3 bil-
lion) compared with a current account deficit of 782.9 billion yen ($7.6 billion) in March. Retail sales and corporate spending both surged ahead of the 3 percentage point tax hike as families and businesses stepped up purchases to avoid paying the higher rate. The revised GDP data show private non-residential investment rose 7.6 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, up from the original estimate of a 4.9 percent increase. The higher growth estimate for the first quarter suggests corporate investment may be picking up and could help cushion the impact of the tax hike on the economy. But growth estimates can vary wide-
ly, and the data reported Monday may change again, London-based Capital Economics said in a commentary. “Revisions between the first and second estimate have historically not brought the data closer to final outcomes,” it said. The government is planning to cut corporate taxes to further encourage investment that it says will lead eventually to higher wages, ending a two-decade slump following the collapse of Japan’s “bubble economy” in the early 1990s. Sustained growth will require a recovery in purchasing power through increased wages that would help make up for the higher costs households face due to inflation and higher taxes, economists say. So far, most companies are raising bonuses rather than base wages, which have continued to fall and dipped 0.2 percent in April from a year earlier.

Fourteen-year-old Hunter Gandee walked from his junior high school not far from the Ohio border to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He packed his brother, Braden, throughout the two-day journey. On Sunday, they strolled up a winding road toward the university’s wrestling center. Asked how he felt, Braden said simply: “Tired.” Hunter acknowledges there was talk of stopping the walk around the 30-mile (48-kilometer) mark due to chafing on his brother’s legs. Called the Cerebral Palsy Swagger, the trek’s goal was to raise awareness about cerebral palsy and to put a face on the neurological disorder.

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Former rebel leader Hashim Thaci claimed a third term as prime minister of Kosovo on Sunday after official preliminary results gave him the lead in a snap parliamentary election that also saw minority Serbs casting votes for the 120-seat assembly despite their rejection of Kosovo’s claim to statehood. Official preliminary results gave Thaci’s Democratic Party of Kosovo a lead of three percentage points over the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo with over 70 percent of the ballots counted. The hardline ethnic Albanian Self-determination movement was in third place, it’s best showing ever in a general election. The vote was seen as important for European Union efforts toward stabilizing the Balkan flashpoint 15 years after its independence war from Serbia. Sunday’s election was called after parliament became deadlocked over key issues, including formation of Kosovo’s armed forces. Just over 43 percent of Kosovo’s 1.7 million voters cast ballots, state election authorities said after polls closed. “Tomorrow morning we continue with our work,” Thaci told supporters gathered in the capital Pristina. “Tomorrow we follow the will of the people that was expressed today.” Thaci’s strong showing comes despite allegations of government corruption, botched privatization deals and high-profile cases against his top aides suspected by European Union prosecutors in Kosovo of committing war crimes. Minority Serb participation in the vote was vital for EU-brokered talks to help Kosovo normalize its ties with Serbia. Hundreds of Serbs cast ballots, but turnout in Serb-held areas was still lower than the overall turnout. New religious affairs minister to visit KPK
JAKARTA - Newly appointed Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saefuddin planned to visit the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters on Tuesday, to consult about matters happening in the ministry. “Tomorrow, Tuesday (June 10), I am going to visit the KPK to hear their observations so far,” noted Lukman Hakim after his inauguration as the new minister of religious affairs at the State Palace here on Monday. Lukman stressed the need to identify actual problems related to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, including the process of organizing the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage program. Lukman added that he will meet the first echelon officials to identify the actual problems. “Therefore, I will be able to identify, diagnose, and if possible, I will adopt policy measures,” he
stressed. Lukman said that he wanted to know about the progress of the Hajj preparations, including passport, lodging, and catering. He also stated that he had met President Yudhoyono to set the Hajj Operation Costs (BPIH), so that the people can pay off the pilgrimage cost at the earliest. “The president has agreed to set BPIH soon,” Lukman emphasized. On the other hand, the KPK is still focused on examining witnesses related to the Hajj 2012-2013 corruption case in the ministry. The KPK is committed to not rushing into arresting the former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali who is the only suspect in the Hajj 20122013 corruption case so far. Bogor Palace set to attract 35 thousand visitors
BOGOR - The Bogor Palace opens its doors to the public between Monday and Thursday, and Saturday to mark the 532nd anniversary of Bogor city, which is expected to attract some 35 thousand visitors, stated an official. “Bogor Palace is open for the public for five days between June 9 and 12, and on June 14, to attract as many visitors as possible,” Bogor Culture and Tourism Department Chief Sri Herlina Nasution stated on Monday. She explained that the event this year
has been named “The Palace for Public” instead of “Open Palace” as in the previous year. “Besides online registration at the Palace for Public website since June 2, those interested to visit the Bogor Palace can also register at three locations provided by the city’s culture and tourism office,” Herlina noted. MONTREAL - Australian Daniel Ricciardo celebrated his first Formula One victory on Sunday in a Canadian Grand Prix that put Red Bull back on top of the podium and dealt Mercedes a first defeat of the season. An afternoon of high drama at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ended behind the safety car after Brazilian Felipe Massa’s Williams smashed into the back of Sergio Perez’s Force India as they entered the final lap. Ahead of them, Ricciardo cruised to the chequered flag with championship leader Nico Rosberg second for Mercedes after starting on pole position in what turned out to be a thriller in Montreal. Last year’s winner Sebastian Vettel, the quadruple world champion, was third for Red Bull. “I’m still a bit in shock,” beamed Ricciardo from the podium, where he was interviewed by 1995 Canadian GP winner Jean Alesi. “It’s an amazing feeling right now.” Rosberg still stretched his lead to 22 points after team mate Lewis Hamilton, his closest rival, retired with a rear brake problem. “It’s been a decent weekend and the points are important so I’m definitely pleased with that,” said Rosberg, who won two weeks ago in Monaco. He and Hamilton had fought wheel-to-wheel, their cars touching at the hairpin on lap 46, before the 2008 world champion suffered his second blank in seven races. “This has been a good track for me, so to come here and not finish is sad for the team but we’ve got many more races ahead of us, so let’s hope that there’s more fortune
coming in the future,” said Hamilton. The Mercedes pair had built up a comfortable lead but reported power problems half way through the race, with Rosberg holding out until he was passed by Ricciardo with two laps to go. “The boy has been brilliant all year,” declared Red Bull boss Christian Horner. “It was an incredible drive. It’s been a great team effort. We beat them (Mercedes) at the most unlikely track. We are closing the gap.” Realist Until Sunday, Mercedes had won every race and finished one-two in the last five. Doing what he does so well on the red clay of Roland Garros, a surface and site he dominates so completely, the No. 1-seeded Nadal wore down No. 2 Novak Djokovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 in a muggy final Sunday to win his ninth French Open championship and fifth in a row, both records. “For me,” Nadal said, “playing here in Roland Garros is just unforgettable, forever.” It is also his 14th Grand Slam title overall, tying the 28-year-old Spaniard with Pete Sampras for the second most by a man, behind only Roger Federer’s 17. That includes Nadal’s two trophies apiece at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, along with one from the Australian Open, proving he can beat the best on grass and hard courts, too. VOLTA REDONDA, Brazil — Ciro Immobile scored a hat trick and also set up two other goals as Italy ended its recent slump by beating Brazilian club Fluminense 5-3 in a World Cup warm-up match Sunday. The Azzurri had entered on a seven-match winless streak and this match was deadlocked at 2-2 at halftime before Italy scored three goals in a two-minute span at the start of the second half. Lorenzo Insigne opened the scoring in the 23rd and Chiquinho equalized two minutes later. Immobile scored his first in the 31st then Carlinhos equalized in the 37th. Immobile put Italy ahead for good in the 53rd then scored again a minute later before crossing to Insigne for another easy score in the 55th. Substitute Matheus
Carvalho pulled one back for Fluminense in the 64th. Italy opens the World Cup against England in Manaus on Saturday then faces Costa Rica and Uruguay in Group D, one of the tournament’s toughest. Then in the 37th, Carlinhos dribbled by Italy right back Ignazio Abate and scored when third-string goalkeeper Mattia Perin couldn’t hold on to his powerful shot. In the second half, Immobile scored from a rebound following a shot from Alessio Cerci then finished off a counterattack being sprung forward following a long vertical pass from Alberto Aquilani. Finally, Immobile stole the ball deep in Fluminense and was unselfish to set up Insigne to make it 5-2. Italy coach Cesare Prandelli should like what he saw from Immobile and Insigne in attack.

ITU, Brazil — On a sultry June evening last year in Recife, Brazil, it was hard to tell which side were the four-time World Cup champions and which the footballing outsiders who had never tasted global glory. Japan were confounding the Italian defense with precision passing, fast-paced attack and surprising flair. By the 40th minute Japan was up 2-0 at the Confederations Cup on goals by Europe-based stars Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda. Then it all fell apart. Baffling defensive errors, including an almost comical own goal, got the Italians back into the match — which they went on to win in a 4-3 thriller. The contest points to the somewhat ambiguous legacy of Japan’s Italian manager Alberto Zaccheroni, a grand seigneur of Serie A who won the Italian league in 1999 with AC Milan. Under Zaccheroni, Japan have cured the curse of being clueless before goal, and honed a pulsating, entertaining attacking style — but also shown sudden frailties in a defense that had long prided itself on its discipline. Hints into the reversal may lie in Zaccheroni’s Italian years. In Serie A, Zaccheroni was an atypical tactician: Attack-minded in an almost stiflingly defensive and conservative league, he developed a goal-getting strategy that relied on three (rather than the usual four) defenders, which was thrilling to watch but bad for the blood pressure. And ultimately disappointing. Zaccheroni never matched the triumph of winning the “scudetto” in his first year at AC Milan, and his spotty record in Serie A also roughly parallels Japan’s own inconsistency under his watch. The Japan coach spoke of the need to make “final improvements” after touching down in Brazil on Saturday on the back of another spotty performance in the team’s warm-up match, a last-gasp 4-3 win against Zambia. Japan captain Makoto Hasebe gave a more candid assessment speaking to reporters on the tarmac of Viracopos Airport: “Physically the condition is very good, the rest is the mental part ... and making it ready as a whole team.” It’s clear where Zaccheroni sets his strategic priorities. “In these past 20 years, I’ve seen Japan ever since they started playing in the World Cup as a good squad. A good squad, very organized, with good players — with the problem of the goal,” said Paolo Condo, the lead international football writer for Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport. “Zaccheroni made it his mission to succeed in producing goals with this team.”

SAO PAULO — FIFA says less than half of the tickets available for the opening match of the World Cup next week went directly to the general public, with most being reserved for commercial partners, broadcasters, local organizers and hospitality programs. FIFA said Sunday that of the 61,600 tickets available for the Brazil-Croatia match on Thursday in Sao Paulo, only 25,636 were sold to the general public. About 10,000 additional tickets are going to fans through promotional activities. Football’s governing body said more than 1,500 tickets were reserved for VIPs, and about the same number is going to journalists. More than 13,700 tickets went to hospitality programs, and 12,600 to commercial af-
filiates and broadcasters, who are expected to give away 85 percent of their share to fans and partners. Local organizers and the football community, including association members, received 6,600 tickets. FIFA initially said the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo would hold 68,000 people in the high-profile inaugural match, but the capacity was adjusted because of the seats reserved to journalists and to accommodate the 34 cameras needed to broadcast the match. FIFA denied that the decrease in capacity was caused by delays in construction at the Itaquerao. The stadium has been one of the most problematic in the runup to the World Cup, prompting a series of concerns to FIFA. Late last year, a crane hoisting a giant roofing structure into place collapsed, killing two workers and causing significant delays. Con-
structors have already said that the stadium’s roof will not be fully completed for the tournament. ITU, Brazil — On a sultry June evening last year in Recife, Brazil, it was hard to tell which side were the four-time World Cup champions and which the footballing outsiders who had never tasted global glory. Japan were confounding the Italian defense with precision passing, fast-paced attack and surprising flair. By the 40th minute Japan was up 2-0 at the Confederations Cup on goals by Europe-based stars Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda. Then it all fell apart. Baffling defensive errors, including an almost comical own goal, got the Italians back into the match — which they went on to win in a 4-3 thriller. The contest points to the somewhat ambiguous legacy of Japan’s Italian manager Alberto Zaccheroni, a grand seigneur of Serie A who won the Italian league in 1999 with AC Milan. Under Zaccheroni, Japan have cured the curse of being clueless before goal, and honed a pulsating, entertaining attacking style — but also shown sudden frailties in a defense that had long prided itself on its discipline. Hints into the reversal may lie in Zaccheroni’s Italian years. In Serie A, Zaccheroni was an atypical tactician: Attack-minded in an almost stiflingly defensive and conservative league, he developed a goal-getting strategy that relied on three (rather than the usual four) defenders, which was thrilling to watch but bad for the blood pressure. SAO PAULO — FIFA says less than half of the tickets available for the opening match of the World Cup next week went directly to the general public, with most being reserved for commercial partners, broadcasters, local organizers and hospitality programs. FIFA said Sunday that of the 61,600 tickets available for the Brazil-Croatia match on Thursday in Sao Paulo, only 25,636 were sold to the general public. About 10,000 additional tickets are going to fans through promotional activities. Football’s governing body said more than 1,500 tickets were reserved for VIPs, and about the same number is going to journalists. More than 13,700 tickets went to hospitality programs, and 12,600 to commercial af-
filiates and broadcasters, who are expected to give away 85 percent of their share to fans and partners. Local organizers and the football community, including association members, received 6,600 tickets. FIFA initially said the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo would hold 68,000 people in the high-profile inaugural match, but the capacity was adjusted because of the seats reserved to journalists and to accommodate the 34 cameras needed to broadcast the match. FIFA denied that the decrease in capacity was caused by delays in construction at the Itaquerao. The stadium has been one of the most problematic in the runup to the World Cup, prompting a series of concerns to FIFA. Late last year, a crane hoisting a giant roofing structure into place collapsed, killing two workers and causing significant delays. Con-
structors have already said that the stadium’s roof will not be fully completed for the tournament. FIFA is also worried about the recent wave of strikes in Sao Paulo, especially by operators of the subway line that will takes fans and journalists to the Itaquerao. “FIFA and the local organizing committee rely on the urban mobility plans presented by host city Sao Paulo, which include not only the usual means of transportation but also contingency plans in case of one of the modals is unavailable or partially working,” football’s governing body said. The strike by subway operators created havoc in the city’s traffic last week, nearly halting South America’s biggest city. “What FIFA and the LOC always stress is the importance of fans to plan their way to the stadium and leave early for the match,” FIFA said.

MONTREAL - Australian Daniel Ricciardo celebrated his first Formula One victory on Sunday in a Canadian Grand Prix that put Red Bull back on top of the podium and dealt Mercedes a first defeat of the season. An afternoon of high drama at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve ended behind the safety car after Brazilian Felipe Massa’s Williams smashed into the back of Sergio Perez’s Force India as they entered the final lap. Ahead of them, Ricciardo cruised to the chequered flag with championship leader Nico Rosberg second for Mercedes after starting on pole position in what turned out to be a thriller in Montreal. Last year’s winner Sebastian Vettel, the quadruple world champion, was third for Red Bull. “I’m still a bit in shock,” beamed Ricciardo from the podium, where he was interviewed by 1995 Canadian GP winner Jean Alesi. “It’s an amazing feeling right now.” Rosberg still stretched his lead to 22 points after team mate Lewis Hamilton, his closest rival, retired with a rear brake problem. “It’s been a decent weekend and the points are important so I’m definitely pleased with that,” said Rosberg, who won two weeks ago in Monaco. He and Hamilton had fought wheel-to-wheel, their cars touching at the hairpin on lap 46, before the 2008 world champion suffered his second blank in seven races. “This has been a good track for me, so to come here and not finish is sad for the team but we’ve got many more races ahead of us, so let’s hope that there’s more fortune
coming in the future,” said Hamilton. The Mercedes pair had built up a comfortable lead but reported power problems half way through the race, with Rosberg holding out until he was passed by Ricciardo with two laps to go. “The boy has been brilliant all year,” declared Red Bull boss Christian Horner. “It was an incredible drive. of responsibility, but Pakistani Taliban militants, allied with but separate from the Afghan Taliban, are battling to overthrow the Pakistani state and impose their hardline vision of Islamist rule. Teen finishes 40-mile walk while carrying brother

ANN ARBOR, Michigan — A Michigan teenager carrying his 7-year-old brother on his back has battled heat, rain, fatigue and more to finish a 40-mile (64-kilometer) walk to raise awareness about cerebral palsy. Fourteen-year-old Hunter Gandee walked from his junior high school not far from the Ohio border to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He packed his brother, Braden, throughout the two-day journey. On Sunday, they strolled up a winding road toward the university’s wrestling center. Asked how he felt, Braden said simply: “Tired.” Hunter acknowledges there was talk of stopping the walk around the 30-mile (48-kilometer) mark due to chafing on his brother’s legs. Called the Cerebral Palsy Swagger, the trek’s goal was to raise awareness about cerebral palsy and to put a face on the neurological disorder.

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Former rebel leader Hashim Thaci claimed a third term as prime minister of Kosovo on Sunday after official preliminary results gave him the lead in a snap parliamentary election that also saw minority Serbs casting votes for the 120-seat assembly despite their rejection of Kosovo’s claim to statehood. Official preliminary results gave Thaci’s Democratic Party of Kosovo a lead of three percentage points over the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo with over 70 percent of the ballots counted. The hardline ethnic Albanian Self-determination movement was in third place, it’s best showing ever in a general election. The vote was seen as important for European Union efforts toward stabilizing the Balkan flashpoint 15 years after its independence war from Serbia. Sunday’s election was called after parliament became deadlocked over key issues, including formation of Kosovo’s armed forces. Just over 43 percent of Kosovo’s 1.7 million voters cast ballots, state election authorities said after polls closed. “Tomorrow morning we continue with our work,” Thaci told supporters gathered in the capital Pristina. “Tomorrow we follow the will of the people that was expressed today.” Thaci’s strong showing comes despite allegations of government corruption, botched privatization deals and high-profile cases against his top aides suspected by European Union prosecutors in Kosovo of committing war crimes. Minority Serb participation in the vote was vital for EU-brokered talks to help Kosovo normalize its ties with Serbia. Hundreds of Serbs cast ballots, but turnout in Serb-held areas was still lower than the overall turnout. New religious affairs minister to visit KPK
JAKARTA - Newly appointed Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saefuddin planned to visit the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters on Tuesday, to consult about matters happening in the ministry. “Tomorrow, Tuesday (June 10), I am going to visit the KPK to hear their observations so far,” noted Lukman Hakim after his inauguration as the new minister of religious affairs at the State Palace here on Monday. Lukman stressed the need to identify actual problems related to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, including the process of organizing the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage program. Lukman added that he will meet the first echelon officials to identify the actual problems. “Therefore, I will be able to identify, diagnose, and if possible, I will adopt policy measures,” he
stressed. Lukman said that he wanted to know about the progress of the Hajj preparations, including passport, lodging, and catering. He also stated that he had met President Yudhoyono to set the Hajj Operation Costs (BPIH), so that the people can pay off the pilgrimage cost at the earliest. “The president has agreed to set BPIH soon,” Lukman emphasized. On the other hand, the KPK is still focused on examining witnesses related to the Hajj 2012-2013 corruption case in the ministry. The KPK is committed to not rushing into arresting the former religious affairs minister Suryadharma Ali who is the only suspect in the Hajj 20122013 corruption case so far. Bogor Palace set to attract 35 thousand visitors
BOGOR - The Bogor Palace opens its doors to the public between Monday and Thursday, and Saturday to mark the 532nd anniversary of Bogor city, which is expected to attract some 35 thousand visitors, stated an official. “Bogor Palace is open for the public for five days between June 9 and 12, and on June 14, to attract as many visitors as possible,” Bogor Culture and Tourism Department Chief Sri Herlina Nasution stated on Monday. She explained that the event this year
has been named “The Palace for Public” instead of “Open Palace” as in the previous year. “Besides online registration at the Palace for Public website since June 2, those interested to visit the Bogor Palace can also register at three locations provided by the city’s culture and tourism office,” Herlina noted. The downturn that began 6½ years ago accelerated wrenching changes that have left many Americans feeling worse off than they did the last time the economy had roughly the same number of jobs it does now. Employers added 217,000 workers in May, more than enough to surpass the 138.4 million jobs that existed when the recession began in December 2007. But even as the unemployment rate has slipped to 6.3 percent from 10 percent at the depth of the recession, the economy still lacks its former firepower. To many economists, the job figures are both proof of the sustained recovery and evidence of a painful transformation in how Americans earn a living. “The labor market recovery has been disappointing,” said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist at PNC Financial Services. “Even with the new peak, there is still a great deal of slack.” There are still 1.49 million construction jobs missing. Factories have 1.65 million fewer workers. Many of these jobs have been permanently replaced by new technologies: robots, software and advanced equipment that speeds productivity and requires less manpower, said Patrick O’Keefe, director of economic research for the advisory and consulting firm CohnReznick. “When heavy things need to be moved, we now have machines to do it,” O’Keefe said. “It is unlikely in the manufacturing sector that we recover much of the losses.” Government payrolls have shrunk, taking middle class pay with them. Local school districts have 255,400 fewer employees. The U.S. Postal Service has shed 194,700 employees. And during the economic recovery, more people have left the job market than entered it. Just 58.9 percent of working-age Americans have jobs, down from 62.7 percent at the start of the recession. Mike Evangelist, a policy analyst at NELP, said the nation’s evolution away from goods production to a more service-oriented economy has slowed hiring in many mid- and higher-paying sectors. The weak job gains in those sectors have slowed overall pay growth, giving consumers less money to spend and depriving the recovery of its usual vigor. Relative to much of Europe and Japan, lower-wage jobs have accounted for much of the job growth in the United States. About a quarter of U.S. jobs were in lowpaying industries in 2011, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a 34-nation association based in Paris. That was the highest proportion among developed nations, the OECD said. In 2001, the United States had ranked fifth in low-paying jobs. Employers have been shifting to more part-time workers, noted John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo. More than 27.2 million Americans now work part time, about 2.5 million more than before the recession. Roughly a quarter of those workers would prefer to be full time, according to the May jobs report. And while the number of full-time workers has risen during the 5-year-old recovery, the economy still has 2.9 million fewer of them.

lion) compared with a current account deficit of 782.9 billion yen ($7.6 billion) in March. Retail sales and corporate spending both surged ahead of the 3 percentage point tax hike as families and businesses stepped up purchases to avoid paying the higher rate. The revised GDP data show private non-residential investment rose 7.6 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, up from the original estimate of a 4.9 percent increase. The higher growth estimate for the first quarter suggests corporate investment may be picking up and could help cushion the impact of the tax hike on the economy. But growth estimates can vary wide-
ly, and the data reported Monday may change again, London-based Capital Economics said in a commentary. “Revisions between the first and second estimate have historically not brought the data closer to final outcomes,” it said. The government is planning to cut corporate taxes to further encourage investment that it says will lead eventually to higher wages, ending a two-decade slump following the collapse of Japan’s “bubble economy” in the early 1990s. Sustained growth will require a recovery in purchasing power through increased wages that would help make up for the higher costs households face due to inflation and higher taxes, economists say. So far, most companies are raising bonuses rather than base wages, which have continued to fall and dipped 0.2 percent in April from a year earlier.

However, a resident of Dukuh Pulu Kaja hamlet, Mambang village, East Selemadeg, takes advantage of the dry banana sheath to produce the work of painting with high economic value. Made Darma Yasa, the painter, admitted that he initiated the marketing of his banana sheath painting in 2009 at the villas in Tabanan. “Indeed, this work of art has not yet widely recognized by market due to marketing constraints. Dozens of new flora, fauna species in Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar — A dragon fish with intricate, mazelike markings on every scale, a frog with rough, chocolatecolored skin and a ginger plant are among more than two dozen flora and fauna species found in Myanmar since it emerged from a half-century of military rule and isolation. The World Wildlife Fund said Thursday the discoveries by global scientists in the last two years highlight the need to invest in conservation as the biologically diverse nation of 60 million revs up its economic engines and opens up to foreign investment. Already, it is starting to succumb to many of the pressures felt by neighbors in Southeast Asia, from deforestation and illegal wildlife trade to mining and the development of hydropower. The 26 plants and animals newly identified in Myanmar include a species of dragon fish, which are hugely popular in the Asian aquatic world. The so-called “scribbled arowana,” is creating a buzz on the aquarium fish blogosphere because of its unheardof complex, maze-like markings on every individual scale. Previously unidentified by scientists, a ginger plant collected from a single region in the cloud forests of the western state of Rakhine had been hiding in plain sight at local markets, WWF said. And a chocolate-spotted frog, a member of the Amolops family, was discovered in a mountain range that stretches along Myanmar’s western border and India. Win Myo Thu, co-founder of the local environmental group EcoDev, believes scientists have only scraped the surface of what is
yet to be discovered in his country. In part because Myanmar was cut off from the rest of the world for such a long time, limiting the ability to carry out a proper inventory, “there is a huge, huge knowledge gap,” he said. “The more research that is done, the more species we are going to find.” He too worries about the impact economic development will have on the country’s “biotreasures.” “Unfortunately, no one is paying attention to protecting biodiversity,” he said. “They say OK, we will do this or that, but on ground it’s an entirely different story.” Many of the national parks are protected, but only on paper. ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The first video of life on Arctic sea ice from a polar bear point of view has been released by the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency on Friday released a clip recorded by a camera attached to the collar of a female polar bear without cubs in the Beaufort Sea north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The necks of polar bear males are wider than their heads and collars slide off. The clip shows the bear pursuing a seal under water, dunking a frozen seal into seawater and interacting with a male who might be a suitor. The cameras are part of a study to find out how polar bears, listed as a threatened species, are responding to sea ice loss from global warming. Scientists in the Beaufort are generally limited to about six weeks of field work each spring, between the time it’s light enough to work and before ice begins to break up. “It’s all information that we wouldn’t be able to get otherwise,” said Todd Atwood, research leader for the USGS Polar Bear Research Program, from his office in Anchorage. The collars were attached in April and collected eight to 10 days later as a test run of how they eventually will be deployed for longer periods. Cameras were attached to two bears in 2013, but the batteries could not handle Arctic temperatures, Atwood said. Redesigned collars were attached to four females that already were going to be captured for blood samples on a study of behavior and energy expenditure led by USGS research biologist Anthony Pagano. The bears already carry collars with GPS recording data and accelerometers, an activity sensor that records whether a bear is resting, walking, swimming or hunting. The USGS is part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Polar Bear Recovery Team that will draft a Polar Bear Conservation Management Plan to meet requirements of the Endangered Species Act. The law requires the plan to guide activities for polar bear conservation.

I am confident that local people can afford, but the carrying capacity must also be ready,” he said. He added that today people might not go up against investment because the investors were not enemies. Local communities should play a role in it. However, the negative impacts should be minimized. When an area became tourism area, in addition to resulting in positive effects, it would definitely bring in a variety of negative impacts, ranging from security, rising prices of basic needs, incoming of the culture unsuitable with local culture to drugs and prostitution. Russian citizen snatched, perpetrator arrested Bali Post
DENPASAR - A citizen of Russia named Ilya Kandybin, 29, was a victim of snatching when crossing on Jalan Uma Alas, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta, Badung, on Monday (Jun 2). A few days later, the North Kuta Police officers managed to arrest the perpetrator, I Made Putra Pica, 25, but police are still hunting the fellow of the perpetrator with initials IK. When interrogated by the officers of North Kuta Police, Putra claimed to always take action with IK, which played the role as a jockey aka motor rider, while Putra acted as the executor. Before taking action both perpetrators always rode Honda Vario Techno motorcycle with a fake license plate DK 4175 DF. After seeing their target, both perpetrators dogged and waited for the right time to act. Then, IK approached the prospective victims with the motorcycle, while Putra was ready to do seizing. “Putra always takes action together with his fellow IK, who is now a fugitive,” said Chief of North Kuta Police, Ronny R Eppang, Sunday (Jun 8). Further, he explained that the same mode was also committed by both suspects against Ilya. At that time, the victim living at Tegal Jaya hamlet, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta, Badung, was mugged when stopping at roadside, Monday (Jun 2). “The same mode was also committed by perpetrators while snatching last Monday around 10:00 p.m.,” he explained. After obtaining the bag that contained a Samsung S3 hand phone and a number of foreign currencies, Putra and IK ran away to the road among paddy fields. Being aware of her bag to have been snatched, Ilya crashed the motorcycle of the suspect to fall. “The suspect promptly took the motorcycle and fled, while the victim chose to report to the case to North Kuta Police,” he added. Having been investigated, police got the identity of Putra and immediately arrested the perpetrator in his boarding house at Campuan hamlet, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta Badung. NPF exploits entire potentials of Nusa Penida

SEMARAPURA - Having long been initiated, ultimately the Nusa Penida Festival (NPF) was vibrantly opened at Sampalan Sport Stadium, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Sunday (Jun 8). The NPF drew thousands of local residents who had long thirst for entertainment. The NPF attempted to exploit the whole potential of Nusa Penida to build the first foundation in this underdeveloped tourism area. The NPF was inaugurated in person by the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta. The regent could answer entire the criticism and condemnation against him because he had not been able to make many changes to his native land since the beginning of his leadership. He considered the festival the first step to answer the criticism. “Development takes time, funds and processes. Give us time to think and work for you. I admit to have not been able to do much since the beginning of my term,” he said. Suwirta added that the three clusters of Nusa Penida Island were indeed unique and exciting destinations amidst the excel-
lence as territory of waters. It had become another attraction and spirit that should bring in prosperity to its residents. Unfortunately, the potential of the islands were virtually untouchable throughout the year, especially the largest island, Nusa Gede. He wanted the NPF could provide a positive impact for the tourism development plan of Nusa Penida. “It is the first. Hopefully, it can encourage the tourism development and increase the number of tourist visits,” he said. With the introduction to the entire potential of Nusa Penida, it was expected to attract investors to invest in all sectors. carnival to dance and other performances. Then, on Monday (Jun 9) was filled with exhibition and photography, environmental camp, inauguration of marine protected areas (NOA), painting and quiz competition, village and Crystal Bay excursion, transplantation of coral reefs and a parade of music and entertainment. On Tuesday (Jun 10), the festival would be filled with blood donation and mass sports, and photography exhibition, seminar, regatta, fashion show as well as Lembongan, Ceningan and Jungut Batu excursion. As planned, the NPF would be closed on Wednesday (Jun 11) with clean-up activities in coastal areas, mangrove planting and transplantation of coral reefs. In addition to drawing the attention of local community, the NPF was also visited by hundreds of foreign travelers. Most of them were curious about the NPF. “Tourism in the mainland and overland has not been balanced. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — A veteran and a newbie made history Sunday at the Tony Awards. Audra McDonald became the show’s most decorated actress, while Bryan Cranston won a best actor trophy for his Broadway debut. McDonald won her sixth Tony for portraying Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill,” putting her ahead of five-time winners Angela Lansbury and the late Julie Harris for the most competitive wins by an actress. Among those she thanked were her parents for not medicating their hyperactive child. The latest win — for best lead actress in a play — also makes McDonald the first grand-slam performance winner. She previously won as best featured actress in a play (“A Raisin in the Sun” and “Master Class”), best lead actress in a musical (“The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess”) and best featured actress in a musical (“Ragtime” and “Carousel”). Joni Sugiharto, one of the initiators, said the concert involving his fellows from various countries was the continuation of a series of anniversary celebration of the BaliTV.
“As a member of society, we should be concerned, especially with our children that are having problems in prison. They are all our fellows,” said Joni.
On that account, the children who underwent detention in Karangasem Prison and young people getting involved in problem should be fostered. By holding this charity
concert, the donation would be used to purchase musical instruments or painting tools. “We will use the proceedings for donation to children in prison. We will not give them as such, but purchase them musical instruments such as guitar, painting tools, and can immediately teach them and guide them,” said Joni. He hoped those who were undergoing detention could play the musical instrument or paint accordingly. “Hopefully, when they are out of
prison, they have a skill,” hoped the long-haired man. Such pattern was expected to have a positive influence, in which the children who were currently serving a period of detention could be received positively after their release. Not contrarily, they were isolated because they also had a bright future and plenty of time to learn. “With this concert, we are able to give a donation in the form of musical instruments.
