BERLIN — More than 80,000 emergency personnel including firefighters and soldiers were on duty Saturday, working aggressively to contain the most dramatic floods in Germany in a decade. Thousands of residents were still unable to return to their homes, and bridges and streets were impassable in many regions of eastern and southern Germany. Twenty people reportedly have already died in the floods across central Europe after several days of heavy rains. Thousands have been put up in emergency shelters waiting for the waters to recede so they can get back to their homes. German news agency dpa said people in Magdeburg in SaxonyAnhalt were anxiously waiting downstream as the crest of the Elbe river approached Saturday. Authorities evacuated a nursing home and
turned off electricity in several parts of the city. Where the Saale river meets the Elbe, about 3,000 people had to leave their homes. “The coming days will be extreme and difficult,” Magdeburg’s mayor, Lutz Truemper, told news agency dpa. High water levels were also reported in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, while thousands of people in Austria were busy shoveling away mud left by the receding
floodwaters of the Danube. In Hungary, around 2,000 residents of the town of Gyorujfalu northwest of the capital of Budapest were evacuated because authorities were afraid the levees wouldn’t withstand the pressure of the Danube’s waters. Another 980 residents had to leave their homes along the river out of precaution. Hundreds of volunteers and military personnel were helping shore up the defenses along the Danube in Szentendre, a town 14 miles (22 kilometers) north of Budapest, while military reservists from other Hungarian counties filled sandbags and packed them on top of walls along the river, which was expected to peak here on Sunday at about 16 inches (40 centimeters) above its current record of 25 feet (7.60
meters). A 330 yards (meters) long and about 2.5 yards (meters) tall mobile flood wall was assembled in eight hours alongside the river promenade in the town earlier this week and is protecting its picturesque center. “After the floods of 2002 and 2006, the promenade wall became very weak and we decided to tear it down,” said Ferenc Dietz, Szentendre’s mayor. “We decided to put up a mobile flood wall, in part because it provides total security.” The rising waters of the Danube, Europe’s biggest river, were expected to reach Budapest on Monday. The water levels were already at 28.2 feet (8.60 meters) on Saturday and expected to rise to 29.4 feet (8.95 meters) at the peak
of the flood — inching close up to the top of the river’s flood fences, which are 30.5 feet (9.30 meters) tall. In one of the most devastating floods, in 1838, the Danube killed 150 people and left over 50,000 others homeless. In Slovakia, the Danube was still on the rise in the towns of Sturovo and Komarno near the Hungarian border. The situation in Komarno was especially critical as several protective barriers started leaking and volunteers had arrived to reinforce them with sandbags. In the Czech Republic, the waters were dropping further and cleanup work was under way. However, anti-flood measures were to remain in place as heavy rains and thunderstorms were forecast for the weekend.

Vegetable farmers around the Lake Beratan, Candikuning village, Baturiti, were confused. Price of their vegetable commodity totally slumped, even they were virtually unsalable. This condition caused dozens of farmers to suffer a loss. Being unsalable, they took advantage of the crops for fish feed. At least two vegetable commodities experienced plummeting price. They included lettuce and parsley. Both vegetables were usually the mainstay product sold to international hotels and restaurants. However, lately the demand for such vegetables had continued to slump and was followed by the price drop. “The price of parsley and lettuce has fallen sharply for a week,” said Nyoman Diarna, one of the local vegetable growers, Friday (Jun 7). The price of lettuce dropped from IDR 15,000 to IDR 6,000 per kg. Meanwhile, the price of parsley plummeted from IDR 10,000 to IDR 2,000 per kg. Aside from facing slumped price, he also complained about the disappearance of vegetable collectors. Thus, farmers were then confused
to market their crops. Diarna admitted not to understand what triggered the drop in price. He alleged it happened due to lacking of demand from hotel, while the harvest yield was abundant and the crop of farmers was pretty good. Dropped prices made farmers suffer a loss because the planting cost of vegetable was high. It included the purchase of seeds, protective plastic and daily labor. “If prices drop like this, we must be willing to get no turnover,” he complained. According to Diarna, dropped prices of vegetables always happened every harvest season. However, this time was more severe because the crop of farmers was nearly unsalable and there were no collectors. Responding to this condition, farmers could do
nothing. To avoid great loss, some farmers were forced to process their vegetable into fish feed. This middle-aged man finely chopped his vegetables like parsley and lettuce and then they were sprinkled into his fish cage at the mouth of Lake Beratan. This activity, he said, slightly reduced the cost of fish feed because both vegetables were very effective used as fish food. Normally, he should purchase fish food at IDR 30,000 per sack. Other than chopping the crops, farmers also anticipated such condition by the application of various farming systems. In other words, they had also cultivated different kinds of commodities. Even though there are only four booths for Indonesia, its products were well sought by China-South Asia (CSA) Expo 2013 visitors at Kumning, China that is being held from Thursday (6/6) to Monday (10/6). Most visitors were attracted to wooden products and batik products offered by national businesses. One expo exhibitioner, Prasetio, Indonesian products have greater quality causing it sold well when actually ASEAN products were almost the aame and there are only 2,000 businesses that joined the event. For Prasetio this is the first time he joined such event and the enthusiasm on Indonesian products were seen from the first day et sadly government has minim awareness to it. “I joined this event with my own budget and this is different to othe r overseas event that government would fund,” Prasetio

A Chinese businessman, Mr, Liu, also admitted that Indonesian prosuxts have good quality as he himself supplies his produxts from Kalimantan plus importing fromIndonesia fulfils China market needs. Besides its quality, Liu also stated that Indonesian businesses cancoordinate well and would send items on time. He was never dissapointed with the quality and the partnership. CSA Expo has its first time big held with 32 countries participating and 2,420 booths used with 5 zones which are South Asia, ASEAN, Outsiee Asia, electronics and machinery, biology source. Besides opening an opportunity for business owners to get investments and partnership, transactions were also possible. Economic growth of Bali at risk of weakening Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Government plan to raise the price of subsidized fuel will make the economic growth slightly weaker and the inflation get higher. The increase in Premium fuel price to IDR 6,500 per liter and diesel to IDR 5,500 per liter will cause correction to Bali’s economy targeted by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali around 6.7 to 7.1 percent to not less than 6 percent. Despite the economic growth declined, the economist Prof. Dr. Wayan Ramantha, assessed the fuel price hike was only temporary. It would not trigger the growth of poor population noted to reach 160,950 people (BPS, September 2012). “In terms of inflation, the rise in subsidized fuel price will also increase the inflation by 1 percent due to the increases in food prices. However, it will last temporarily,” said Ramantha in Denpasar, Friday (Jun 7). According to him, the policy of subsidized fuel adjustment was a step needing to be taken. Though resulting in high inflation, the effort would last temporarily for some 2-3 months. “To reduce the burden on the community, the government should disburse the
Temporary Cash Assistance (BLSM) on time and realize the infrastructure such as public transport,” he said. According to him, all this time public relied on private vehicles due to inadequate public transport services. This condition would surely be borne by society in the midst of soaring fuel prices. Secretary of the Regional Inflation Control Team (TPID) for Bali and Nusra, Dwi Pranoto, previously stated that Bali and Nusa Tenggara region had been experiencing a significant inflationary pressures in early 2013. Up to the first quarter, Bali and Nusa Tenggara region showed an inflation of more than 6.16 percent, while the national inflation was 5.90 percent. “The condition is causing a concern as it can potentially undermine the welfare of community through reduction of real purchasing power,” he said. To that end, his party would formulate measures to control the inflation in the future at a moderate and stable level. Stabbing at billiard arena
Two groups of people virtually get involved in clash Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Two groups of people almost clashed on Jalan Tukad Baru, South Denpasar, Friday (Jun 7). Hundreds of people armed with sharp weapons wanted to raid the headquarters of one of the community organizations there. Luckily, police officers from the South Denpasar Police, Denpasar Metro Police and Bali Police moved quickly to the scene and managed to calm down the situation. The raid posed the aftermath of stabbing action at billiard arena on Jalan Pulau Galang, Pemogan, South Denpasar, at 01:30 morning. Made Susana aka Made Kembar, 38, got into a fight against some youths at the billiard arena causing a stabbing wound in the neck and left arm. Perpetrator of the stabbing was alleged to have the initial LF and friends. Allegedly the stabbing was triggered by a misunderstanding. Though the stabbing case had been followed up by Criminal Detective Unit of South Denpasar Police and Denpasar Metro Police and the victim was rushed to Kasih Ibu Hospital in Denpasar, the case apparently continued on that day. Around 2:00 p.m., dozens of burly young men alleged to be the fellows of victim Kembar attacked and destroyed a home located on Jalan Pemogan Gang Muhajirin II, Denpasar. They were carrying sharp weapons such as sword and raging as well as destroying the home and shop at the location. The house and the store was said to belong to LF. Afterward, the mass ruffled the store terrace and smashed the window glass, rolling door and roof. More than that, they also ransacked the house to mess up. “Initially, there were three men coming to the scene. Then, they were followed by two other men,” said a
witness at the scene. Then, they were busy pressing cellular phone button and said if the house was owned by LF. Not long after, dozens of other men came and looked for LF. Since the man searched for was not at the location, they then expressed their anger by damaging the home. One of the stores was also destroyed. When the vandalism took place, father of LF named Abdullah went out of the home. Unfortunately, he became the victim of stabbing made by the culprits. “The situation is very tense at that time. Since it was crowded, I went out of the house. However, I was asked to come in,” he added. According to local residents, the vandalism to the home and store by dozens of burly men lasted about 15 minutes. After doing the destruction, they ran away. They parked their car and motorcycle about 20 meters from the location. In that incident, it was mentioned if they did not only destroy the house of LF, but also the house of his relative located approximately 100 meters away from the first location. Once the perpetrators fled, residents living around the scene apparently also got angry. Hundreds of residents armed with sharp weapons such as machetes, samurai and other wooden stick attacked the headquar-
ters of one of the mass organizations located on Jalan Tukad Baru, Denpasar. Police had to move quickly. Even, the Denpasar Metro Police personnel armed with a rifle directly ambushed them. The Head of Denpasar Metro Police, I Wayan Sunartha, and Commander of the 1611/Badung District Military Command, I Made Kusuma Dyana Graha, came down directly to the scene to calm down the situation. Even, Chief Sunartha and Commander Kusuma Dyana Graha had got in touch with the armed masses to impede them. Hundreds of those people could be successfully routed back to their respective home. Nevertheless, the location was still secured by police. Until Saturday night, hundreds of police personnel were still on guard at the scene. Spokesperson of Denpasar Metro Police, IB Sarjana, claimed to be unable to give more comments related to the incident. He appealed to all communities and both parties to remain calm and not commit any anarchy. “We are still chasing the culprit. Rehab to Mentigi Market, county govt allocates IDR 1.8 billion Semarapura (Bali Post)—
Klungkung government resumed the rehabilitation of Mentigi Market in Nusa Penida. For the second phase rehabilitation, the county government prepared a budget worth IDR 1.814 billion to repair dozens of stalls, market office, public toilet and padmasana shrine. It was revealed by Secretary of Klungkung regional government, Ketut Janapria, Thursday (Jun 6). Janapria said the second phase rehabilitation of Mentigi Market in 2013 was funded with Special Allocation Fund (DAK) worth IDR 852 million and matching fund from the regional budget worth IDR 962 million. Therefore, the total fund in the second phase rehabilitation amounted to IDR 1.814 billion. The second phase rehabilitation was carried out to some parts, consisting of 13 kiosks on the southern side, 26 kiosks on the western side, 4 kiosks on the eastern side, 5 market stalls, market office, public toilet and padmasana shrine. “While the kiosks on the northern side have not been included in this second phase plan,” he said. He said the matching fund from the regional budget for the Mentigi Market rehabilitation project was described to be quite large compared to the matching fund on the projects using the other special allocation fund. “Minimal amount required by the regulation for the matching fund from regional budget for special allocation fund is 10 percent. However, for matching fund of Mentigi Markets rehab is more than 10 percent. We urge in order the Mentigi Market rehabilitation can be immediately accomplished and the condition can be better,” he said. Janapria said the second phase rehabilitation would be worked on by CV Bale Agung where the process would start on Friday (Jun 7). According to the Secretary, condition of the Mentigi Market had been poor for a long time. So, it needed to be repaired thoroughly. Previously, the first phase rehabilitation to Mentigi Market in 2012 was made to 5 units of stall spending the regional budget as much as IDR 930 million. While rehabilitating the kiosks, the traders were temporarily relocated to the parking lot of the market. They seemed to throng the sidewalk so that they consequently hindered the rights of pedestrians. Though having been frequently reprimanded by the officials, those traders still insisted on placing their commodities on the sidewalk. As monitoring at Mentigi Market, the sidewalks were filled up by commodities as seen on Jalan Raya Mentigi. Such condition also often kindled traffic jams at the market. A pedestrian, I Dewa Gede Eka, asked the officials to enforce the regulation in order the traders would no longer do selling on the sidewalk. (kmb31)

Special formula prepared was to increase the agricultural production and productivity through the application of appropriate technology. It was revealed by Minister of Trade, Gita Wirjawan, during his visit to BaliTV at K. Nadha Bali Press Building on Saturday (Jun 8). In the visit received by Chief Editor of Bali Post and the ranks, Gita also said that his party would maintain the balance between the interests of producers and the interests of consumers, so that the welfare of producers, including farmers and breeder, would not get eroded. “We have owned a design for local farming so that farmers can survive amidst the onslaught of imported products, such as by increasing production and productivity. For example, it can be executed by increasing their soybean production,” he said. According to him, the need for soybean in Indonesia so far was dependent on imports. Of the needs of 2.5 million tons per year, Indonesia still imported about 1.8 million tons per year. The high number of soybean import rate happened because the soybean productivity based on national data only reached 1.1 tons per hectare. “Meanwhile, there are certain regions such as Jember which can produce 4 tons of soybeans with productivity up to 4.5 tons per year. Issuance of the regulation just aimed to simplify the licensing process and the administration of imports, so that certainty in running business would be more secure. There were some basic regulations set forth in the rules where any import of horticultural product could only be executed by the Producer Importer (IP) and Registered
Importer (IT) of Horticultural Products. Then, any Import Approval of horticultural products should receive a Recommendation of Horticultural Product Import (RIPH) from the Ministry of Agriculture. “Similarly, we will only issue the import policy on the products that are not produced by farmers in Indonesia. The most important is not just our awareness to consume domestic products, but we must also be aware of a lot of products from outside that do not comply with
the rules in force in Indonesia,” he said. According to him, quite a few imported products from overseas still used formaldehyde, banned pesticides, illegal dyes, and other illicit products. “I think we have to develop a deeper cooperation with media to make socialization in order that consumers are smarter, more responsible as well as not consuming any illegal, smuggled and unhealthy, not eco-friendly products,” he said. Residents asked to beware of five-yearly cycle Semarapura (Bali Post)— Cases of dengue fever (DBD) began to spread a health threat. One by one people were contracted by dengue fever and were rushed to Klungkung Hospital. Within the past week, the dengue fever had attacked two villages namely Tojan and Satra village, Klungkung. Residents were asked to be aware of the widespread transmission of dengue fever in their respective environment. This year had entered the five-year cycle where the spread of dengue fever was more virulent and faster than previous year. As happened at Tojan village, in less than a week, four local residents had been rushed to Klungkung Hospital, including Putu Ayu Eka Pramita, 11, Made Pandi, 11, Made Intan, 14, and Kadek Yuda Ananda, 19. Incidentally, the house of the four residents was adjacent. Father of Putu Ayu Eka Pramita, Nengah Arianta, said on Saturday (Jun 8) that his daughter suddenly got high fever and indicated red spots on the skin surface. Therefore, his eldest daughter was rushed to Klungkung Hospital. Similar symptoms were also experienced by three other residents. The cousin of Kadek Yuda Ananda, Wayan Putra Santosa, said that Kadek Yuda suddenly got high fever, cold sweat, dizziness and abdominal pain especially when being pressed. Having been rushed to Klungkung Hospital, in fact his blood
platelet was also declared to decrease dramatically. Thus, Yuda was stated to get dengue infection. Other than attacking Tojan village, the dengue fever also attacked Satra village. A local resident, Dewa Ayu Noki, 16, was still in weak condition in Klungkung Hospital. Her mother, Desak Putu Alit Armini, said the symptoms experienced by her daughter were almost the same as resident at Tojan village. Initially she got a sudden fever followed by red spots appearing on the skin surface to a cold sweat. She worried if her daughter remaining in grade X of SMA Sarawasti Klungkung senior high school was infected by dengue fever so that Ayu was also rushed to Klungkung Hospital. The Head of Klungkung Health Agency, Gusti Ngurah Agung Suwastika, confirmed the attack of dengue
fever at Tojan village. His party and Klungkung Community Health Center II had come down to location and conducted fogging in the neighborhoods three days before. However, the fogging had not been done at Satra village. “Satra village has not been reached by the fogging, we’ve heard the dengue fever just attacked Tojan village,” he said. Suwastika said this year was a tough year in dealing with the spread of dengue fever. The problem was that this year entered the five-year cycle of dengue fever mentioned to be spreading faster than previous years. Thus, he asked the anticipatory measures to be intensified in every region. Active participation of the community to overcome the threat of dengue fever could be done in simple ways. For example, people should actively involved in the mosquito nest eradication program (PSN) by covering water reservoirs, routinely draining puddles, and hoarding objects often used by mosquitoes to lay eggs. Suwastika said that public should be directly involved in the mosquito nest eradication movement. At least, they should get involved in their own environment to narrow the space for the spread of dengue fever in the five-year cycle. (kmb31)
AMIDST of the existence of Bali as a tourist destination and venue of numerous international events, the handling of beggar issues all this time seems to have not totally finished yet. Even though the handling has been conducted by relevant agencies such as social agency by providing development and repatriation to their home of origin, the existence of beggars remains visible at some points of public place. One of them is seen at the Badung Market. Kadek, 12, is one of the child beggars wandering every day around the Badung Market was found by Bali Post picking chili and onion on the floor in front of one of the spice traders. He claimed the chili and onion collected would be sold at the price of much lower than the normal price. His activity to pick up the remaining commodities of traders was a side job other than begging to market visitors. This boy from Tianyar, Karangasem, claimed to have become a beggar since he was a toddler. When asked to show off the other beggars, he then pointed out to location at the edge of the basement parking space. Some friends of his age who also worked as beggar were still taking a rest. When asked their place of origin, all of those child beggars claimed to come from Tianyar, Karangasem. Made Pang, 12, another beggar, said to have been begging since he was 4 years old. He was begging at the Badung Market because he had gone with his mother since childhood who also earned a fortune at the local market as a porter. He started begging from the morning until late afternoon. Within a day, he confessed to earn around IDR 30,000. His begging money was then used to purchase food and partly given to his parents. “I give the money to my mother,” he said. He added that his parents took him to earn a fortune in Denpasar because he could do nothing at his home village. During the cashew harvest season, he and his mother would be back to his home village to work as picker and collector of cashew nuts. “When the cashew season arrives, I and my mother usually go home for a month. Later on, when the cashew harvest season ends, we will be back here (Badung Market),” he said. He should currently at sixth grade of elementary school but he could only attend school until the second grade. Since having no money, he was forced to drop out of school and go with her mother to live by begging to meet their needs. Different from the 13-year old Puji, he was studying at second grade of elementary school in Denpasar. The court in suburban Beijing found Liu Hui guilty of fraud in a real estate dispute and issued the sentence after a brief hearing that came just hours after new Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with President Barack Obama at an informal summit in California. Liu Xia, the defendant’s sister and the Nobel laureate’s wife who is herself under house arrest but who was allowed to attend the trial, said she has seen no improvement in China’s human rights situation under Xi despite hopes for political reform under his leadership. “Judging from what has happened to my family and the type of life I have lived in the past two years, I cannot say I have seen any improvements, I cannot see any hope,” she said. Liu Xia said authorities in China were being unscrupulous in persecuting her family, and wept as she briefly stood and spoke to reporters outside a car that was bringing her home from the hearing. “How can they give an 11-year sentence? South Africans pray for hospitalized Mandela Reuters
SOWETO, South Africa - South Africans prayed for Nelson Mandela’s recovery on Sunday as the 94-year-old former president spent a second day in hospital with a recurring lung infection. Mandela, who became a global symbol of triumph over adversity and South Africa’s first black leader in 1994 after the defeat of apartheid, was hospitalized early on Saturday after his already frail health worsened. It is his fourth hospital stay since December and the government said on Saturday his condition was “serious”. During previous hospital visits it had highlighted his “good spirits”. His health is a cause for concern to the millions of South Africans who revere Mandela for his decades of struggle against white-minority rule and steering the continent’s biggest economy to all-race elections. Hundreds gathered to pray for him at Sunday Mass at the Regina Mundi Catholic church in the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto. “We wish him speedy recovery, he must get well,” Soweto resident Mlugisi Sekhosana said. “We know what he did for us in South Africa. All the nation, black and white, we wish him well.” The government had yet to give an update on his condition early on Sunday. Spain hold on for friendly win over Haiti Reuters
MIAMI - World champions Spain held on for a 2-1 win over Haiti in a friendly on Saturday as they warmed up for this month’s Confederations Cup. After Fernando Torres went close with a spectacular volley, Vicente del Bosque’s team grabbed the lead in the eighth minute with a low drive from 25 yards by Santi Cazorla. The Spaniards doubled their advantage in the 19th minute when Juan Mata chipped the ball to Cesc Fabregas, who glanced in a header. It looked likely to be a onesided game with Spain strolling around and Haiti, who have struggled in recent years in CONCACAF competition, chasing the ball in the heat and humidity. Spain introduced Barcelona midfielders Andres Iniesta and Xavi in the second half and almost made it 3-0 when Roberto Soldado struck the post in the 70th minute. But Haiti stuck at the task and delighted their fans in the 36,535 crowd at Sun Life Stadium with a goal in the 76th minute. The ball fell to left back Wilde-Donald Guerrier, who showed electric pace and great composure to burst past the Spanish defence, round substitute keeper Pepe Reina and slot home. TELAVIV - Italy and Norway outclassed Israel and England at the Euro Under-21 championships on Saturday to virtually seal the fate of the Group A. Italy, who beat England 1-0 in the first game, top the standings with six points and Norway are second with four. Israel still have a slim chance of advancing but England are out. The Italians ensured qualification for the semi-finals by crushing the hosts 4-0 on a sultry night in Tel Aviv as Israel played more than half the match with 10 men. Earlier, Norway stunned England 3-1 in Petah Tikva. Parma striker Ricardo Saponara put Italy ahead in the 18th minute when he easily slotted the ball low past Israeli goalkeeper Boris Kleyman. But Israel hopes were dashed when midfielder Eyal Golasa was sent off in the 37th minute for a strong challenge on Saponara and Italy completely dominated the rest of the match. Italy’s top striker Lorenzo Insigne was substituted due to a leg injury, but there was only one team in contention
for the remainder of the match. Atalanta’s Manolo Gabiadini made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the area and he added his second in the 53rd minute with a fierce free kick. National flag raised half-mast at state palace for Taufiq Kiemas Antara
Jakarta - The national flag was raised half-mast at the state palace here on Sunday to mourn the death of the chairman of the People`s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Taufiq Kiemas. The flag was also seen raised half-mast at the private residence of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Cikeas, Bogor, West Java. President Yudhoyono on Saturday evening called on the nation to raise the national flag half-mast for two days following the death of Taufiq Kiemas earlier that day in the General Hospital in Singapore. “I invite you all the people of Indonesia to raise the flag half-mast for two days,” he said at a press conference at his residence following the death of the husband of former president Megawati Soekarnoputri. Taufiq Kiemas was buried at the Heroes` Cemetary at Kilibata on Sunday morning in a state

Malang, East Java - Indonesia is a unique country because it is able to preserve peaceful co-existence among its diverse religious adherents, President of the Asian Conference of Religions for Peace (ACRP) Din Syamsuddin said. “Indonesia`s Pacasila (five principles) state philosophy is a correct basis for diverse society and religious adherents,” Din Syamsudin said when opening an ACRP meeting at the Muhammadiyah University here on Friday night. Din Syamsuddin, who is also the general chairman of Indonesia`s second largest Muslim organization Muhammadiyah, said that besides Pancasila, the principle of `Bhinneka Tunggal Ika` (unity in diversity) also played a very basic role so that the interfaith life and
different ethnic groups could peacefully interact with each other. Din said that the principles were in line with Islamic teachings which require Muslims to see differences as a pillar for interactions. However, the flow of globalization which brought in freedoms could not be deterred. This caused the emergence of new groups which inclined to be exclusive and created new problems. ACRP Secretary General Susnggon Kim concurred with Din. Sunggon Kim, who is a prominent religious leader from Korea, said that human beings needed religions to build their spirituality. He said that without religion, human beings would be equal to animals. “Religion is the sole of a society. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast industrial output growth of 9.3 percent and a retail sales increase of 12.9 percent in May, as well as a rise of 20.5 percent in fixed-asset investment for the January-May period.
Bangladesh garment sales soar despite deadly incidents Reuters DHAKA - Bangladesh’s exports rose 15.43 percent in May to $2.54 billion from a year earlier thanks to stronger clothing sales, the Export Promotion Bureau said on Sunday, even as the country reviews safety standards at factories after two deadly incidents. Garment exports totaled $19.3 billion for the 11 months that ended in May, nearly 12 percent more than a year earlier. The sharp increase comes as the government weighs industry reform after the collapse in April of the Rana Plaza factory complex killed 1,129 people. A fire at another factory last year killed 112. The incidents have put the government, industrialists and the global brands that use the facto-
ries under pressure to reform an industry that employs four million and generates 80 percent of Bangladesh’s export earnings. Total exports in the first 11 months of Bangladesh’s July-June financial year were $24.32 billion, compared with $21.97 billion over the same period the previous year. Monthly exports had fallen year-on-year from March through June as the global economic slowdown weighed on demand. But exports have since picked up, with a 10.67 percent rise in the July-May period. Duty-free access offered by Western countries and low wages have helped make Bangladesh the world’s secondlargest apparel exporter after China, with 60 percent of clothes going to Europe and 23 percent to the United States.

‘Just right’ jobs data could help equities Reuters NEW YORK - The U.S. May jobs report came in just right for investors - neither too weak nor too strong to rock the boat - but market participants are now questioning what’s next for stocks. The equity market is on nebulous middle ground. The S&P 500 is just 1.5 percent away from its all-time closing high, but other than Friday’s rally on the jobs data, it has been stuck in a period of uncertainty. The Labor Department added 175,000 jobs in May, slightly higher than expected, but at a level that indicates the status quo should hold for the Federal Reserve’s stimulus program. Some had worried that if job growth far exceeded expectations, the Fed would reduce bond-buying sooner than expected, while others were concerned that an exceptionally weak number would reveal a fundamentally soft labor market. The data’s ability to relieve both fears may benefit stocks. “The number had a little something in it for everybody, in terms of those who suspect tapering might begin sooner and those who think it might start later,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist of Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia, adding that the May payrolls figure could “prime market participants to be more positive toward equities lead-
ing into next week’s trading.” The program is widely cited as a major contributor to the S&P 500’s (.SPX) surge of 15.2 percent in 2013, when it has hit a repeated series of record highs. Wall Street’s performance has been closely tethered to the Fed’s stimulus program, benefiting from the belief that the economy is just weak enough to keep the Fed buying bonds. When Fed Chief Ben Bernanke said on May 22 that the central bank may decide to reduce purchases if the economy shows signs of significant improvement, stocks fell and bond yields surged. The uncertainty has also increased volatility, with the S&P 500 frequently making daily moves of 1 percent or staging dramatic midday reversals. The CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX), or VIX, has risen more than 20 percent over the past three weeks, although at a level of 15.14, it is still at a level associated with a relatively calm environment. “Equity markets are in a period of adjustment,” said Anastasia Amoroso, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds in New York, which has about $400 billion in assets. “If there’s an
unannounced change in policy, that could be a shock to the downside.” That adjustment is likely to keep trading in a narrow range. On Thursday, the S&P 500 briefly fell under its 50-day moving average of 1,604, as well as below the psychologically important level of 1,600, before rebounding. However, the benchmark index remains below its 14-day moving average of 1,645.08. This year’s gains have been broad, with all 10 S&P 500 sectors sharply higher, so it is difficult to determine which sectors may be the most vulnerable to a market pullback. The best-performing sector of the year health care (.SPXHC), up 20 percent - is a defensive group, as is telecom (.SPLRCL), one of the year’s weaker performers, with a gain of 8.6 percent for the year to date. Cyclical sectors, which are tied to the pace of economic growth and have been especially sensitive to any indication that Fed policy may be changing, have also outperformed the broad market this year. However, despite those gains and the Fed uncertainty, they may not be vulnerable going forward. The shakier sectors have been the big dividend payers, because higher yields on safe government debt would make those shares less attractive.

Turkey PM’s party rules out early elections Associated Press Writer ANKARA, Turkey — Police in Ankara fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse thousands of people protesting near government buildings on Saturday, as Turkey’s biggest wave of anti-government protests in decades entered its second week with no signs of waning. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s governing party, meanwhile, rejected calls for early elections, and dismissed the protests as an attempt by the opposition to topple the government. The protests, sparked by outrage over a violent police action to oust an environmental protest in Isanbul’s Taksim Square on May 31, and which have spread to dozens of cities across Turkey, are the first serious challenge to Erdogan’s leadership. Three people have died — two protesters and a policeman — and thousands have been injured so far. The protests have become a general condemnation of Erdogan, whom many consider to have grown
authoritarian in his 10 years in power, and accuse of trying to introduce his religious and conservative mores in a country governed by secular laws. He convened the leadership of his Justice and Development party to discuss the protests Saturday afternoon. Speaking after the meeting, party spokesman Huseyin Celik said rumors that the 2015 general elections would be moved forward were “totally baseless, totally unnecessary, made-up and imaginary,” Celik also accused the main opposition party of trying to topple Erdogan through illegitimate means, “having failed seven times to beat (the Justice party) in the ballot boxes.”
The head of Turkey’s nationalist party, Devlet Bahceli, had called for early elections for Erdogan to reaffirm his mandate. “The prime minister’s stance and the tumult have deepened the crisis,” Bahceli told reporters. “The prime minister’s time is up, we believe he has to renew his mandate.” The protests have attracted a broad array of people angered by what they say are Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian ways and his intervention in private lives. They point to attempts to curtail the selling and promotion of alcohol, his comments on how women should dress and statements that each woman should have at least three children. A devout Muslim who says he is committed to upholding Turkey’s secular tradition, Erdogan vehemently rejects charges of autocracy and points out that he enjoyed 50 percent support in the last elections in 2011.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — President Barack Obama used an unusually lengthy and informal desert summit to present Chinese President Xi Jinping with detailed evidence of intellectual property theft emanating from his country, as a top U.S. official declared Saturday that cybersecurity is now at the “center of the relationship” between the world’s largest economies. While there were few clear policy breakthroughs on cybersecurity, U.S. officials said Obama and Xi were in broad agreement over the need for North Korea to be denuclearized. And both countries expressed optimism that the closer personal ties forged between the two leaders during the California summit could stem the mistrust between the world powers. Still, Obama’s national security adviser Tom Donilon said resolving cybersecurity issues would be “key to the future” of the relationship. Obama told Xi that “if it’s not addressed, if it continues to be this direct theft of United States property, that this was going to be very difficult problem in the economic relationship and was going to be an inhibitor to the relationship really reaching its full potential,” Donilon said during a briefing with reporters following the summit. In their own recap of the meetings, Chinese officials said Xi opposed all forms of cyberspying, but claimed no responsibility for attacks against the U.S. “Cybersecurity should not become the root cause of mutual suspicion and frictions between our two countries. Rather, it should be a new bright spot in our cooperation,” said Yang Jiechi, Xi’s senior foreign policy adviser. Yang said the two leaders “blazed a new trail” away from the two nations’ past differences and “talked about cooperation and did not shy away from differences.” Obama and Xi met for about eight hours over the course of two days at the sweeping Sunnylands estate, marking a significant and unusual investment of time for both presidents. Their talks included a working dinner of lobster tamales, Porterhouse steak and cherry pie prepared by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, and a morning walk through the manicured gardens of the 200-acre estate on the edge of the Mojave Desert. During their walk, the leaders stopped to sit on a custom-designed park bench made of California redwood that Obama presented to Xi as a gift.
Death toll from Libya clashes rises to 27 Associated Press Writer TRIPOLI, Libya — A health official says the death toll from clashes between protesters and former rebels aligned with the military in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi has risen to 27. The violence broke out Saturday
after protesters stormed a base belonging to Libya Shield, a grouping of progovernment militias tasked with maintaining security. The protesters were demanding that militias leave their camp and submit to the full authority of Libya’s security forces. Officials originally reported seven dead.
Mohamed Belied, who is director at the city’s al-Jala hospital, said early Sunday that the deaths were caused by gunshots and explosive fragments. He said dozens were wounded, without saying how many casualties were protesters and how many militiamen.

CHARLESTON, South Carolina — The internationally known Spoleto Festival USA founded by the late composer Gian Carlo Menotti has always presented an international slate of performers. The season concluding Sunday — the 37th for Spoleto — featured two theater companies from the United Kingdom, an acrobatic ensemble from France, and dance companies from Brazil and India. But perhaps no show reflects the international flavor of the 17-day arts festival than the American premiere of the opera “Matsukaze.” The composer is Japanese and the director is Chinese, while the lead singers are Korean and perform in German. An American conducts the orchestra. Based on a text from Japanese Noh theater, it tells the story of the spirits of two sisters condemned to wander the earth. “Matsukaze,” which means “wind in the pines,” is by contemporary Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa and premiered in Brussels two years ago. The curtain was to rise on the final Spoleto production Saturday night. Noh theater dates back centuries and plots generally center around legends and the supernatural. Hosokawa has lived in Germany for years, said John Kennedy, who is conducting the opera. “He’s really at home with the language so it’s already a cross-cultural piece in that way,” said Kennedy, who also is the festival’s resident conductor. “There is something in the piece as far as merging East and West that inspired us to have that energy in our team.” Director Chen Shi-Zheng, who has directed two previous Spoleto productions, said he retained traditional Japanese elements in the staging “but the music doesn’t sound stereotypical of a Japanese composer.” “There’s a spirit that reminds you of a quality of meditation but it’s a contemporary and beautiful piece.” Chen also called the production a “melting pot” and a “mixture,” a description that could apply to the Spoleto festival as a whole.

PARIS — Some Parisians want just a little bit more of their city to go to the dogs. At least 100 pooches — with owners in tow, holding leashes — marched near the Louvre at a demonstration to demand more park space and access to public transportation for the four-legged friends. Tongues and tails wagged Saturday under a warm Paris sun as collies, pugs, boxers, bulldogs, Labradors and other breeds paraded around the famed Paris museum.
Organizers of the caninecitizen march dubbed “My Dog, My City” estimate about 200,000 dogs live in Paris. They say other cities like New York, London, Montreal and Brussels offer more
dog-oriented public spaces. According to the city’s website, two of Paris’ 20 sections have only one reserved public park space for dogs. Leashes are required.

An anonymous donor had the high bid of $1,000,100 when the bidding ended Friday night on
eBay. The private audience with Buffett drew bids of more than $2 million in each of the past five years, including last year’s recordsetting winning bid of $3,456,789. All proceeds go to the Glide Foundation, which helps the poor and homeless in San Francisco. The nonprofit relies on the auction to provide a significant chunk of its $17 million annual budget. “It means a lot to us to make sure we continue meeting the needs of the people who need it most,” said
the Rev. Cecil Williams, Glide’s founder. Last year’s Buffett lunch was the most-expensive charity item ever sold on eBay. The most expensive item ever sold on eBay was a jet that drew $4.9 million in 2001, eBay spokeswoman Karen Sayah said. Buffett said he will spend several hours discussing whatever the winner wants to talk about, except that Berkshire Hathaway’s chairman and CEO won’t talk about potential investments.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Future filmmakers feted at Student Academy Awards Associated Press WRiter
The world’s future filmmakers got a preview of the kind of Hollywood glamour and glory that could be theirs someday as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented its 40th annual Student Academy Awards. Sixteen college students from around the globe were honored at the Saturday night ceremony, held at the academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills and hosted by onetime Student Academy Award winner Bob Saget. Presenters included writer-director Kimberly Peirce and actors Clark Gregg, Jason Schwartzman and Quvenzhane Wallis. Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive eight Oscars and 46 Oscar nominations. Could Saturday night’s winners be far behind? Remember these names: GOLD MEDAL WINNERS Kristina Yee, National Film and Television School, United Kingdom, Foreign Film category for “Miss Todd.”

Actress Helen Mirren turns ferocious in new “Monsters” movie Reuters LONDON - British actress Helen Mirren had no trouble transforming herself from monarch to menacing creature for the new “Monsters, Inc.” animated movie, but said she’s not so frightening in real life. The 67-year-old veteran of stage and screen made headlines last month when she stormed out of a London theatre dressed as Queen Elizabeth to berate a group of drummers playing noisily outside in an expletive-riddled tirade. She later apologised. However the actress, who lends her voice to the terrifying winged monster heading the School of Scaring in “Monsters University”, said she does try not to seem scary after being intimidated by certain actors when her career started. She was even wary she might alienate people when she was made a dame in 2003. “People may look at me and think she is so scary... but it is not what you’re trying to be,” Mirren told a news conference on Friday ahead of the release of 3D “Monsters University”. The film is the prequel to Pixar and
Sulley (John Goodman) at Monsters University and the mismatched monsters can’t stand each other. Mirren voices Dean Hardscrabble, a dragon-like monster with a centipede body, who throws Wazowski and Sulley out of the School of Scaring, prompting them to join other monster misfits to compete in a Scare Games tournament and become best friends. “Monsters University” is one of a list of family films being released this summer that includes 20th Century Fox’s “Epic” in which singer Beyonce takes a voice part, “Despicable Me 2,” “Turbo” with Ryan Reynolds as a racing snail, and “Smurfs 2”. Mirren, whose list of accolades from a career spanning nearly 50 years includes an Oscar for the 2006 film “The Queen”, said voicing an animated character was a new challenge for her but she had learned that fear was something to conquer. She said one of the best pieces of advice she was given came from IBP/ist a former headmistress who told her Helen Mirren that the worst thing about fear is fear itself. “I have lived by this ever since,” said small, green one-eyed monster Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) Mirren, stressing that she had had to meets the huge, blue-and-purple monster work hard to get to where she is now.
