Issa Rae says goodbye to anonymity after ‘Insecure’ success LOS ANGELES — Issa Rae is just starting to feel the side effects of having a hit show. The creator, writer and star of HBO’s “Insecure” is getting more and more opportunities — and she’s also getting recognized on the streets of her suburban Los Angeles neighborhood. “The true test for me was Inglewood. I live in Inglewood, and I walk in Inglewood all the time. I do a morning walk, and nobody recognized me,” Rae said Sunday as she arrived at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. “Then just a couple weeks ago I did my routine walk and I had three cars turn around and stop... One almost tried to follow me home. So I was like, oh, I can’t do this anymore in my own neighborhood.” The 32-year-old star is seizing the opportunities that have come with such success, though, with at least two film projects in the works:

one as writer, another as actress. “I’m taking it all in stride,” Rae said. “The show, ‘Insecure,’ occupies like eight or nine months out of the year. But I’m happy to be in this position. It’s a good problem to have.” Rae plays a fictionalized version of herself on the show, a comedy about a young professional woman named Issa navigating her life. As for “Insecure’s” second season, which starts July 23, Rae says it picks up right where the first season left off: with Issa’s relationship in shambles. “We’re exploring the question: what does it mean to be doing what you’re supposed to be doing,” she said. “You’re supposed to break up; you’re supposed to be growing up with your friends; you’re supposed to be moving on. So in your 30s, what does it look like when you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing?” (ap)

King Arthur fights back to big screen, leading the resistance

LOS ANGELES - A new dawn, and possibly even a franchise, await the legend of British folklore hero King Arthur.

Warner Bros’ “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” out in U.S. theaters on Friday, revives the tales of the legendary warrior, his famed knights of the round table, and the magician Merlin. Directed by Guy Ritchie, “Legend of the Sword” goes back to the origins of Arthur, played by Charlie Hunnam, as he is plucked from the poverty in which he grew up as an orphan, and becomes a reluctant leader of a resistance against his uncle, King Vortigern, played by Jude Law. “Something that has been really,

Ages, the story of a civilian uprising is something that can apply to a modern-day audience, said Djimon Hounsou, who plays Arthur’s confidant Bedivere. “It resonates loudly about what’s going on in America or, more importantly, about what’s going on in the world,” Hounsou said. The legends of King Arthur have been adapted into numerous films over the years, from 1953’s “Knights of the Round Table” to 2015’s “Arthur and Merlin.” Ritchie believes it has staying power, saying he has already envisioned several more films for his iteration of the folklore hero. Jakarta’s Christian governor jailed for blasphemy against Islam

JAKARTA - Jakarta’s Christian governor was sentenced to two years in jail for blasphemy against Islam on Tuesday, a harsher than expected ruling that is being seen as a blow to religious tolerance in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslimmajority nation. The guilty verdict comes amid concern about the growing influence of Islamist groups, who organised mass demonstrations during a tumultuous election campaign that ended with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama losing his bid for another term as governor. President Joko Widodo was an ally of Purnama, an ethnic-Chinese Christian who is popularly known as “Ahok”, and the verdict will be a setback for a government that has sought to quell radical groups and soothe investors’ concerns that the country’s secular values were at risk. As thousands of supporters and opponents waited outside, the head judge of the Jakarta court, Dwiarso Budi Santiarto, said Purnama was

“found to have legitimately and convincingly conducted a criminal act of blasphemy, and because of that we have imposed two years of imprisonment”. Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch described the verdict as “a huge setback” for Indonesia’s record of tolerance and for minorities.

“If someone like Ahok, the governor of the capital, backed by the country’s largest political party, ally of the president, can be jailed on groundless accusations, what will others do?,” Harsono said. WEEPING SUPPORTERS Purnama told the court he would appeal the ruling. The governor was taken to an East Jakarta prison after the verdict and his lawyer Tommy Sihotang said he would remain there despite his appeal process unless a higher court suspended it. Govt needs to pay serious attention to security in Kuta

MANGUPURA - The area around Legian highway was recently the center of a security issue involving two tourists who got into a serious quarrel. This incident should serve as an example of the need for the government to organize and deal with nightspots in Kuta.

Chairman of LPM Kuta, Anak Agung Made Agung, said on Monday (May 8) that criminal cses are frequent in the area of Kuta. This needs to receive the attention of the government and other stakeholders. He added that he hopes that the most recent incident would spur relevant agencies to take immediate measures to curb the likelyhood of such incidents occuring. “Commotions in night club are commonplace so the government should try to deal with it as any crime of fight that occurs will affect the image of tourism” he said. In the near future, the people’s empowerment agency (LPM) of Kuta plans to invite the Badung

tourism office and other stakeholders to discuss the matter of the hours of operation of nightclubs in Kuta. Many nightclub owners stay open longer than legally permitted. “Based on the agreement or the MoU, nightspots in Kuta are only allowed to stay open until 03:00. However, there are still premises that do not heed to the agreement made”, said Agung. The responsibility of maintaining security in Kuta should not rest solely with police authorities. The government also needs to be firm –in this case the tourism office needs to play a more active role. The private security of nighspots should also be empowered to overcome criminal actions that may take place on the premises of these businesses. “Without the assertiveness of the government, it will be difficult to maintain order. If nighclubs are not firmly regulated, they will certainly lean in favour of business profits rather that weak rules”,concluded Agung. (kmb23)

The dog vaccination is carried out in Buleleng Regency

Mass vaccination, dogs left to stray are still common

SINGARAJA - Mass dog vaccinations started again on Monday (May 8) as a preventitive measure against the spead of rabbies. The vaccinations started at Kalibukbuk village, Buleleng, however they did not run smoothly as too many dog owners had left their dogs to stray. Division Head of the Buleleng Livestock and Animal Health at the Buleleng Agriculture Agency, I Wayan Susila, explained that the vaccinations will be held until July 31. The agency estimated that as many as 91,000 dogs spread over nine subdistricts could be vaccinated. A total of 17 temas of vaccinatinos officers will be deployed, consisting of 9 regular teams and 8 ‘A-teams’. The cadres of each village will also be supporting this endevour and will be in charge of seeking out unvaccinated dogs. “We aim to have at least 70 percent of dogs vaccinated with the help of two cadres in each village. If possible we would like to vaccinate even more dogs – as many as possible”, said Susila. The simultaneous vaccination of dogs in all of Bali’s nine subdistricts is being supported with the requires materials, including some 7,000 doses of the anti-rabbies vaccine. “Our vaccines are being kept safe, there have been no problems” he added.

However as the vaccine program started to be implemented, there were still some obstacles. The main problem is that many dog owners are still allowing their dogs to roam freely, which makes it hard for the vaccine officers to do their job. The mountainous terrain of Buleleng also poses some challenges. “There are still many dogs that are left to stray, this makes it hard to vaccinate them”, Susila emphasised. The plan to conduct mass dog vaccinatinos has been made public for some time. The dissemination of information regarding this program has been carried out by installing large banners as well as through public notices given to village authorities. “We have made it known that we will be vaccinated dogs and have asked people to keep their gods on leashes. Hopefully the mass media can make it known to people that they need to take this responsibility seriously” he explained. Susila added that in order to reduce the number of stray dogs, each Traditional Village needs to organise systems of maintenance including sanctions in case of violation. “The village of Pejeng in Ginayar has been declared as a model for dog manintenance by the Government of Bali. Their methodes can also be applied in Buleleng” he concluded. (kmb45)

TOKYO — Money-losing Japanese electronics company Toshiba is sparring with its U.S. joint venture partner Western Digital over the planned sale of Toshiba’s computer-chip business.

Tokyo-based Toshiba Corp. needs cash from such a sale to shore up its finances after it suffered massive losses in its nuclear power division. Toshiba warned Western Digital to stop interfering, according to letters obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press. The letters from the company’s lawyers, dated May 3, accused Western Digital of “improper” interference. Western Digital bought SanDisk, Toshiba’s longtime partner in making flash memory chips, last year. It has argued the sale might violate terms of the joint venture with Toshiba, according to the letters. Such sales can be sensitive because they involve the transfer of technology. Calls to Western Digital in Asia went unanswered. Several companies, including Western Digital, are reportedly interested in acquiring Toshiba’s prized chip-making business. Another is Hon Hai of Taiwan, also known as Foxconn, a major supplier to Apple, which has acquired Japanese electronics company Sharp Corp. South Korea’s SK Hynix is also reportedly a bidder. A Japanese consortium including government-affiliates like the Development Bank of Japan and the public-private Innovation Network Corp. of Japan are said to be preparing a bid with U.S. private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts. The financial newspaper Nikkei reported last month that Western Digital might join that effort. Toshiba is projecting a trillion yen ($9 billion) in losses for the fiscal year that ended in March, although auditors have refused to sign off on its earnings report. The company is also embroiled in an accounting scandal. Further raising doubts over its future viability, Toshiba’s U.S. nuclear unit Westinghouse Electric Co. filed for bankruptcy protection in March. Four nuclear reactors that Westinghouse is helping to build in South Carolina and Georgia are behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget, as costs soar after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, northeastern Japan, six years ago. Facebook removes accounts in fight against fake news

LONDON — Facebook says it has deleted tens of thousands of accounts in Britain ahead of the June 8 general election in a drive to battle fake news. The tech giant also took out newspaper advertisements in Britain’s media offering advice on how to spot such stories. The ads suggest that readers should be “skeptical of headlines,” and to “look closely at the URL.” The company says it has made improvements to help them detect fake news accounts more effectively. Simon Milner, the tech firm’s U.K. director of policy, says the platform wants to get to the “root of the problem” and is working with outside organizations to fact check and analyze content around the election. Milner says Facebook is “doing everything we can to tackle the problem of false news.”

An Austrian court has ruled that Facebook must delete hate speech postings worldwide and that Austrian law can be applied to lawsuits against the social media website. Maria Windhager, a lawyer for an Austrian politician, said Monday’s ruling is a rebuff to the social media giant’s claims that any court actions against it can be heard only in California or Ireland, where Facebook’s world and European headquarters are located. Windhager represents Greens politician Eva Glawischnig, who went to court over comments about her posted through a fake profile. The Austria Press Agency says Monday’s decision arose from Facebook’s appeal of a lower court ruling ordering it to delete the postings. Facebook did not immediately comment on the decision. (ap)

As long as the government of Klungkung does nothing to find alternative work for these people, these workers will continue manually collecting mosaic stones. Although it is illegal to pick

stones off Watuklotok Beach, it remains a common activity amongst those who have no other means of earning a living. On Monday (May 8), Deputy Chief of the Klungkung Police, Nengah Sadiarta, addressed

the matter saying that the stone collectors face serious risks as the waves on this beach can be dangerous, especially recently when the waves have been very large. As time goes on the mosaic stones are harder to find and so the stone collectors must become more reckless appraoching the sea to get the stones. Chief Sadiarta has therefore asked the stone collectors

to take precautionary measures such as wearing life jackets or carrying buoys. Chief of Klungkung Municipal Police, Nyoman Sucitra, said that the government of Klungkung has still not been able to find alternative work for the stone collectors, so these workers are still allowed to carry on with their manual work. However according to an agree-

ment, they are not allowed to look for mosaic stones south of Watukklotok Temple. “If the mosaic stone seekers get desperate and start collecting stones south of the temple, the supporting devotees (pengempon) of the temple will take action”, he explained, Monday (8/5). (dwa)

DENPASAR - Two transvestites named Akner Resa alias Resa, 26, and Munandar Muctar alias Windi, 33, were arrested by the Denpasar Police Drug Investigation Unit. The two were arrested for possesion of drugs and are suspected of having sold drugs to (mostly) foreingn nationals. They did not appear to feel guilty. “They seem to be espacially targettting foreign tourits. Allegedly they are also dealers because it is easy for them to buy drugs, so we

suspect they are part of a syndicate”, said Chief of Denpasar Police Drug Investigation Unit, Wayan Arta Ariawan, on Monday (May 8). When the case was first revealed, the suspect Windi interjected saying that their actions are not criminal: “we are not criminals, we are different that thieves”, said the transvetite from Sulawesi. When interrogated by Arta Ariawan, Windi whose boarding house is located on Jalan Merdeka

Raya (Kuta) honestly admitted that a package of crystal meth had been ordered from his frined LK in Kerobokan Prison. “I ordered for us to use together” he said. Both transvestites argued that they used crystal meth in order to increase their stamina while serving their clients who mostly consist of foreign citizens. The suspect Resa admitted to often target foreign tourists at nightspots, while Windi uses the internet to target

his clients. “I chat on the internet. If the customers agrees, we meet at a hotel. For one date, I get paid USD 100”, he said. As previously reported, drug users and members of drug syndicates continue to be arrested by the Denpasar police drug unit. On Friday (Apr. 28), the two transvestites were arrested on Jalan Sunset Road, Kuta. When interrogated they admitted to belong to the syndicate of an inmate of Kerobokan Prisoner.

According to the police report, on Friday (Apr. 28) at 15:00, police stopped the two suspects who were riding a Honda Vario motorcycle on Jalan Sunset Road, Kuta. Akner tried to run away but tripped and fell. The police officers immediately arrested them and confiscated a bag of crytsal meth. The suspects claimed that they had bought the bag of crytals meth together for IDR 850,000 Munandar paid IDR 350,000 and Akner IDR 500,000. (kmb36)

The physical condition of a boy from Lebah hamlet, Suwug, Buleleng, named Gede Budha Utama, is quite challenging. From the age of 4 months, Utama has suffered paralysis of his legs, so he needs to be carried while he attends schoo at SDN 4 Suwug elementary school. When visited at his home recently, this fourth-grader was very friendly with a warm genuine smile, like any other youngster of his age. His physical condition however makes it impossible for

him to spend his childhood playing games. Utama laughs freely but remains a spectator amid his cheerful friends. This is not the only challenge that Utama faces. Sadely when he was six years old, his mother sperated from his father and left him motherless. Shorly thereafter, Utama’s father found work in a travel agency in Denpasar, so he moved away so he could provide for his family. Without the loving arms of his

mother and father, Utama lives with his grandfater Mangku Sukita and grandmother Ketut Suci. His grandparents struggle to meet all his needs, including carrying himn to school everyday. “We have to piggy-back him to school” said Sukita. Despite having a sense of responsibility for taking Utama to school everyday, Sukita is not always able to do so. Occasionally he has to work as a labourer in order to make ends meet. “Sometimes

his grandmother has to take him to school by motorcycle taxi. But if that is not possible then Utama is focred to stay home from school”, said grandfather Sukita. Utama received a wheelchair from a private institution some time ago, however the chair is too small for him. TANAH LOT — Thousands of people flock daily to the centuries-old, sacred Hindu temple at Tanah Lot, a rock formation that juts into the Indian Ocean. An island at high tide and flanked by sheer cliffs, it’s among Bali’s most photographed sites, particularly for the mesmerizing sunsets that transform the waters into a shimmering orange vista. It’s getting a new neighbor, described as “Trump International Hotel and Tower” in the Trump Organization’s promotions for what will be its first resort in Asia. They promise breathtaking views, a super-sized golf course overlooking the temple and an “enchanting and unrivaled getaway from the current luxury hotels” in Bali. For those weary of mere five-star opulence, it offers six. Nothing that one might consider a tower is going to fly on Bali, where height restrictions prohibit structures higher than the island’s plentiful coconut palms — about 15 meters (49 feet). Locals welcome new investment in the popular Indonesian resort island but are determined to preserve their unique traditions. Neighbors are resisting efforts to expand the Trump site. And if a tower ever starts rising, local authorities are ready to flatten it. “If suddenly they build an unapproved tower, of course we will stop them and demolish it,” said Ida Bagus Wiratmaja, head of the district’s development and planning agency. “There are special rules for the temple and the temple area.” Tanah Lot and other temples dotting the cliffs are more than a lure for tourists. They’re the heart of life in the surrounding Beraban village, where tradition and spirituality are woven into daily living. The Balinese are proud that their island’s Hindu culture has flourished for centuries even as later arrivals — Islam and Christianity — supplanted it elsewhere in the Indonesian archipelago. That was before Trump was elected, so it does not conflict with his pledge not to make new business deals as president. The two groups are also working together near the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, to build a superluxury “Trump Community” in a 3,000-hectare (7,413-acre) minicity alongside a national park that is one of the area’s last refuges for endangered species. MNC and the Trump Organization did not respond to requests for comment on the Bali project. Self-ruled Taiwan wants to attend a May 22-31 annual meeting in Geneva of the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO), but it has accused Beijing of obstructing its efforts. China views democratic Taiwan as a renegade province to be taken back with the use of force, if necessary, and other countries and international organisations should not recognise it or treat as a separate country. Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, which recognises “one China” centred on Beijing, and it never formally takes part in U.N. meetings. This lukat gni tradition begins with a joint worship at temples or family temple to invoke safety and smoothness for the implementation of lukat gni. Dozens of youths that take part in this activity are then heading for the catus pata or central intersection of the village to carry out the tradition. Here, the participants further slammed the fire of tied danyuh (dried coconut leaves) onto each opponent. No injuries are seen despite being hit by fire. CHICAGO — Federal prosecutors in Chicago are asking for up to 11 years in prison for a man who offered advice to his cousin in the 2014 murder of a woman at an Indonesian resort. Robert Bibbs did not directly participate in the slaying of Sheila von Wiese-Mack. However, prosecutors say text messages Bibbs sent to Tommy Schaefer and comments made to the FBI after the killing showed he encouraged the crime and expected to be rewarded.

Heather Mack is serving a 10-year sentence for helping her boyfriend, Schaefer, kill her mother at a Bali resort. Schaefer is serving an 18-year sentence. According to the prosecutor’s Monday filing, Bibbs texted his girlfriend around the time of the slaying that they were “gonna be rich.” The 26year-old Bibbs is scheduled to be sentenced next week by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Pallmeyer. President Jokowi urges Indonesians to maintain harmony BATULICIN - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has urged the Indonesian people to maintain harmony. “Indonesia is a big country, comprising over 17 thousand islands, 714 tribes, 34 provinces, 516 cities and districts, and 1,100 local languages. Jakarta - Maritime Coordinator Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said that the government has pushed the usage of eco-friendly plastics.

During a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, Luhut noted that Indonesia was struggling to fight plastics wastes amid industrial use and peoples awareness regarding the plastics wrapping. “We are still seeking the rules so that non-plastics materials could be used more widely. This is regarding environmental issue,” he stated during his visit to PT Inter Aneka Lestari Kimia in Tangerang, Banten, on Monday. He stated that people and industries still could not avoid plastic packaging. Therefore, a special attention towards the environmental problems was required. “Those wrappers should be eco-friendly,” he remarked. PT Inter Aneka Lestari Kimia has claimed that

they are the producers of degradable and eco-friendly plastics. They use cassava as one of the main material, which is different from other plastics materials that commonly make use of oil. Luhut appreciated the companys efforts for not only producing biodegradable products but also increasing their usage of local contents. “The local contents usage is around 50 percent. If the production volume increased, the price could still be lower,” he noted. Yet, he also revealed that this industry should try to create a new innovation to handle flaws such as the heat resistance. Luhut added that although the industries related need to be given incentives, they should asses the environmental effects as well. “The licenses would be compared first with the environmental effects,” he explained. LONDON — Every time Premier League leader Chelsea plays, entertainment is guaranteed on the field, but on the sideline its manager Antonio Conte puts on a show of his own. Conte lived every minute Chelsea’s 3-0 demolition of Middlesbrough on Monday as his side moved within one victory of the Premier League title. The former Italy national team coach rarely sits during a game, especially at Stamford Bridge. MANAMA — FIFA President Gianni Infantino has decried the “idiots” who directed monkey chants at Sulley Muntari and offered to speak to the Ghanaian soccer player who was initially banned for protesting against racism. Muntari said he was treated like a “criminal” after being shown two yellow cards when he walked off the field during a Serie A game in response to the racial abuse. The Pescara midfielder was infuriated after unsuccessfully trying to get the referee to halt the April 30 game at Cagliari. Muntari eventually persuaded the Italian federation to overturn the one-game ban, but Infantino is perturbed that the referee did not follow FIFA protocols. The world soccer leader issued a public reminder of the correct response to player complaints. “The three step process (is) stop the game, make an announcement, stop the game a while, get the players out,” Infantino said on Tuesday. “Unfortunately idiots (are to blame). There are always idiots everywhere but we have to fight
