‘Captain America: Civil War’ Starts Summer With Sizzling $181.8 Million

LOS ANGELES - Marvel-Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War” has opened the summer spectacularly with a dominant $181.8 million weekend at 4,266 U.S. locations. The third “Captain America” movie met lofty expectations with the fifth-best domestic opening weekend of all time -- trailing only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $248 million, “Jurassic World” at $208.8 million, “Marvel’s The Avengers” at $207.4 million and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” at $191.3 million. The tentpole has already topped the final domestic total of 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” at $176.6 million and should eclipse 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at $259 million by the end of next weekend. The marketing for “Civil War” clearly resonated with moviegoers, as it promised an epic fight between Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, plus the introduction of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with ComScore, said the performance of “Captain America: Civil War” underlines Marvel and Disney’s adept management of a key franchise. “’Captain America: Civil War’ certainly delivered the goods as the official kick off movie of the summer of 2016 was in perfect position to capitalize on its sheer quality, massive entertainment value, brand appeal and a high-profile release date,” he noted. “Despite a cadre of sports-related options on the small screen, including the Kentucky Derby and Stanley Cup playoffs, ‘Cap’ came on strong with a top 5 all-time opening weekend debut and expected long-term bankability at the multiplex.” “Captain America” is also keeping the U.S. box office on track for a record performance in 2016 with $3.856 billion through this weekend

ATHENS - Police come under attack as largely peaceful protests against controversial tax and pension changes in Greece turn ugly. Police have been pelted with petrol bombs in Athens as Greece passed unpopular tax and pensions reforms. Thousands of protesters took to the streets ahead of a vote that the government hopes will unlock bailout cash and pave the way for progress on debt relief when eurozone finance ministers meet on Monday. The demonstrations outside parliament in the capital and in Thessaloniki were largely peaceful, but small groups of protesters attacked riot police, who responded with tear gas. Inside the parliament building, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras survived a crucial test of his wafer-thin majority, as all 153

of the ruling coalition’s lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament voted in favour of the changes. The reforms will reduce some pension payouts, merge a number of pension funds, increase social security contributions and put up taxes for middle and high earners. The measures have been deeply unpopu-

lar with anti-austerity campaigners and trade unions, but Mr Tsipras argued they would not affect most pensioners and moved the country towards a “sustainable” system. “We have an important opportunity before us for the country to break this vicious cycle, and enter a virtuous cycle,” he told lawmakers. But he came under attack from opposition leaders, who accused him of betraying voters who re-elected his government last September on promises to ease the pain of austerity and protect pensions. “Mr Prime Minister, you promised hope and turned it into despair,” said Fofi Gennimata, leader of the

Apart from difficulties in meeting the demand for a continuous supply, she also faces human resource issues. With only four employees ot is sometimes hard to get all the mushrooms to the supermarket by 5:00AM. She also faced challenges in terms of capital and cash flow. Sometimes, payments are not made in accordance with the agreement of the MoU so cash flow is hard to predict. This year was especially challenging because of the extremely hot weather between December 2016 and March 2016. Normally, she can harvest about 1,0000 mushrooms a day or 15 kg. But

with the lack of rain the same 1,000 mushrooms only yielded 5-10 kg. “With 6,000 mushrooms, I should be able to yield 90 kg a day, but this year it was far less than that. The same kind of thing has been experienced by many farmers” said the young woman from Peguyangan Kaja. The amount of mushrooms supplied from Java is also minimal, making it hard to make up for shortages here. Rusadi has been forced to only meet the demands of some of her clients and not others. Steven Limantoro, a hydroponic vegetable farmer, also said that he is unable to meet the demands of hotels and supermarkets because he only has an area of 5x5 meters of land in his courtyard to grow on. “A 1,000

square meter garden can produce enough to meet the demands of 2 or 3 supermarkets. But my 5x5 meters garden can only grow 360 plants, which is not enough to supply supermarkets, we can only supply 1 or 2 restaurants or cafes” he explained. Meeting the demand for vegetables, depends on how much is required. Limantoro can produce about 10kg a day which is enough to supply a restaurant or café. Hotels are generally supplied seasonally. During the holiday season, hotels will demand about 3- 5 kg of each vegetable every day, so Limantoro can meet this demand unless he can access more land. “Meeting the demands of supermarkets requires at least 200-300 square meters of land”, he added. Such floods frequently inundated half of the main road section leading to the area of Tuban, Jimbaran to Nusa-Dua during high tides. “Indeed this frequently occurs, so that this seawater flooding is not for the first time. However, to resolve this we must make coordination with the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar,” he said. According to him, the area inundated by seawater flooding belongs to national road section, while the authority for the national road lies in the agency. “The tidal flooding on the bypass road happens due to sedimentation of Benoa Bay, so that solution to this problem is dredging the sedimentation,” he affirmed. He said the effort to overcome the sedimentation at Benoa Bay will be coordinated by the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar to central government. “To resolve this problem, the agency will coordinate with central government,” he said. Planning Section Head of the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar, Hendro Satrio, when contacted separately said that associated with the tidal flood on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Tuban, his agency was still checking. “Thanks for the information and our team will check it,” he said briefly. Previously, the Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta has

committed to normalizing or restoring the area without changing the existing order. The efforts to normalize Benoa Bay aim to overcome the floods occurred in the region, especially in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. When it rains, the water in the mainland will flow to Mati River and empties into the Benoa Bay. However, due to the current Benoa Bay sedimentation, the flow of rainwater having been designed from mainland to Mati River and empties to Benoa Bay will get inhibited. This happens because sedimentation occurred at Benoa Bay is higher than Mati River. Thus, it impedes the flow of water. my opinion, it (sedimentation— Ed) must be dredged by the government of Badung, not by other parties. If the normalization is done from the Mati River the water will flow to the Benoa Bay. So, our concept is to normalize,” he said. He said the normalization must be taken to restore the area as ever before. Normalization is very much different from reclamation. Normalization restores the area to the original condition, while reclamation is the process of backfilling to make new territory. “Similar normalization needs to be done to bare mangrove forests. Mangroves should be reforested in the areas having been defoliate. Pudut Island area will also be normalized, but we emphasize here not to change the original order,” he concluded. (kmb27)

WASHINGTON - It was a creature so outlandish that scientists say it reminds them of the fanciful beasts conjured up by Dr. Seuss. But would the famous children’s book author have thought up a marine reptile with a hammerhead snout it used to snack on algae? Scientists on Friday announced the discovery in southern China of new fossils of a reptile from 242 million years ago called Atopodentatus that clarify the nature of this strange crocodile-sized, plant-eating sea-dweller. When the first fossils of Atopodentatus were found in 2014, scientists thought, based on its poorly preserved skull, it had a down-turned snout resembling a flamingo’s beak with a

vertical, zipper-like mouth. But two new fossil specimens, described in research published in the journal Science Advances, resolved the matter. “On a scale of weirdness, I think this is up there with the best. It kind of reminds me of some of the Dr. Seuss creations,” National Museums Scotland paleontologist Nicholas Fraser said. Atopodentatus is the earliestknown herbivorous marine reptile,

said paleontologist Olivier Rieppel of the Field Museum in Chicago. Atopodentatus apparently used chisel-like teeth along the edge of its blunt, hammer-shaped snout to scrape algae off hard underwater surfaces. It then quickly opened its mouth to create suction before closing its jaws to filter the plant material through densely packed and needle-shaped teeth much like baleen whales strain tiny shrimp-like krill from seawater.

Atopodentatus, about 9 feet (2.75 meters) long, lived in a shallow sea in China’s Yunnan province alongside fish and other marine reptiles, said paleontologist Chun Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. When thinking of hammerhead creatures, sharks may come to mind. But Atopodentatus’ hammerhead feature differed in location and function from the sharks, whose eyes are on the end of lateral extensions on their head. Atopodentatus appeared during the Triassic Period relatively soon

after the biggest mass extinction of species in Earth’s history, illustrating that life was bouncing back nicely. Other oddball creatures also swam the seas at the time, including a reptile called Dinocephalosaurus whose neck comprised half of its 17-foot (5.25 meters) length. “If you saw this reptile (Atopodentatus) in isolation cruising around with some of the fishes of the day, I think you would say it was really quite absurd,” Fraser said. “But alongside some of its fellow denizens of the deep, I think it would just appear as one more oddity in a mesmerizing world.” (rtr)

Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, when opening the event said that all this time the Kintamani dog had been passing through a long journey before it was established into a clump of native dog breed to Indonesia by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2014. After that, the government of Bangli strengthened the recognition by issuing the Regional Bylaw No.4/2015 about the amendment to regional bylaw No. 02/2010 on the conservation area for Kintamani dog. In the regional bylaw No.04/2015, the government of Bangli gives recognition to Kintamani dogs with the colors like white, black, brown and brindled. “In the regional bylaw is also mentioned about the development area for dog conservation namely the Sukawana, Siakin and Pinggan village,” he explained. According to Gianyar, the challenge faced by the development of Kintamani dog all this time is not only related to the restricted number of kennel, but also the threat of infectious animal diseases, especially rabies. “The outbreak of rabies cases and mitigation effort need to get support from the community. Through this Kintamani dog con-

test, we want to invite and educate people so as to pay more attention to the welfare of their pet. At the same time, it will provide the opportunities for Kintamani dog to become a host in its own region as long as complying with the correct caring procedures,” he explained. In the meantime, the dog contest committee, Sri Rahayu said that the dog contest is held in cooperation with the Bangli Livestock and Agriculture Agency, Department of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University and the All-Indonesia Kennel Club (Perkin) of Bali region. The Kintamani dog contest this time is followed by a number of participants consisting of dog breeders at Sukawana and general public. The dog contest is divided into two sessions, namely the first session consisting of local dog breeders of Sukawana village dogs and the session for general public. There are three categories contested by age, namely 3-6 months, 6-9 months age and the adult category. Captain Mudita Square to be made into a town park

Mercury makes rare move across the sun CAPE CANAVERAL — Mercury has begun a relatively rare move across the sun. The solar-planetary ballet got underway just after 7 a.m. on the east coast with the smallest planet appearing as a tiny black dot on the face of the sun. The transit will last for a total of about 7½ hours. The last time it happened was 2006. It will happen again three years from now, but then not until 2032. NASA says the

event occurs only about 13 times a century. The entirety of Mercury’s journey will be viewable to the eastern U.S. and Canada, as well as most of western Europe and South America. To catch a glimpse, viewers need binoculars or telescopes with protective solar filters. Mercury’s journey can also be seen via a livestream on NASA’s website. (ap)

BANGLI - The government plans to transform the Captain Mudita Square into a town park. Like the town park belonging to other districts, the town park to be built by the government of Bangli will also include some public facilities and fountains. Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, when met recently said that the Captain Mudita Square so far having been used by most people to exercise will be transformed into a town park. According to the plan, the town park will be established in 2017. “Its detailed engineering design has been already prepared this year,” he explained. As planned, the town park of Bangli will be equipped with a number of public facilities. One of them is a playground for chil-

dren. In addition, it will also be equipped with ornamental fountains as already owned by several other neighboring districts. The regent also said that in the town park will also be built a stage with the background of Captain A.A. Mudita statue. Long weekend holiday has caused traffic jam at the Gilimanuk crossing since Saturday afternoon (May 7).

TABANAN - Pura Luhur Besi Kalung, located in Utu Customary Village, Penebel Tabanan has the distinct feature of being home to a Linga Yoni with a chainlike necklace that gongs when struck. It is therefore assumed that the chain necklace is made of steel from which the name “Besi” (steel) comes from. It is believed that if the Linga Yoni slants to one side it foretells a national disaster. Head of Pura Luhur Besi Kalung, accompanied by public relations officer Made Subagia said on Monday that the Linga Yoni in fact slanted in 2013 just before earthquakes and volcanic eruptions shook the island of Java. Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, together with the Deputy Chief A.A. Rai Laba came down to set the queue at Gilimanuk. WELLINGTON - Wealthy Latin Americans are using secretive, tax-free New Zealand shelf companies and trusts to help channel funds around the world, according to a report on Monday based on leaks of the so-called Panama Papers. Pressure is mounting on Prime Minister John Key to take action after local media analysed more than 61,000 documents relating to New Zealand that are part of the massive leak of data from Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm. The papers have shone spotlight on how the world’s rich take advantage of offshore tax regimes. Mossack Fonseca actively promoted New Zealand as a good place to do business due to its tax-free status, high levels of confidentiality and legal security, according to a joint report by Radio New Zealand, TVNZ and investigative journalist Nicky Hager. Key said it was “utterly incorrect” that New Zealand was a tax haven, adding he was open to changing rules around foreign trusts if advised by a review or the OECD.

The government was asking the Ministry of Justice to move quickly on rules already under consideration to tighten anti-money laundering requirements for lawyers, real estates and accountants, he added. Opposition Labour Party Leader Andrew Little said the government must act to “preserve New Zealand’s reputation by shutting down the system that sees our country implicated in a massive global network of tax avoidance.” The New Zealand government said last month it would begin a review of its foreign trust laws after the Panama Papers highlighted vulnerabilities in its legal framework that made it a possible link in international tax avoidance structures because its foreign trusts are not subject to tax. 300 economists urge leaders to reject tax havens

LONDON — Hundreds of economists are urging world leaders to end the era of tax havens, arguing they only benefit rich individuals and multinational corporations and serve to increase inequality. Pentagon report reveals confusion among US troops over Afghan mission KABUL - Amid fierce fighting after the Taliban captured the northern Afghan city of Kunduz last year, U.S. special forces advisers repeatedly asked their commanders how far they were allowed to go to help local troops retake the city. They got no answer, according to witnesses interviewed in a recently declassified, heavily redacted Pentagon report that lays bare the confusion over rules of engagement governing the mission in Afghanistan. As the Taliban insurgency gathers strength, avoiding enemy fire has become increasingly difficult for advisers, who have been acting as consultants rather than combatants since NATO forces formally ceased fighting at the end of 2014. In the heat of the battle, lines can be blurred, and the problem is not exclusive to Afghanistan: questions have arisen over the role of U.S. troops in Iraq after a U.S. Navy SEAL was killed by Islamic State this month. “’How far do you want to go?’ is not a proper response to ‘How far

do you want us to go?’” one special forces member told investigators in a report into the U.S. air strikes on a hospital in Kunduz that killed 42 medical staff, patients and caretakers. That incident was the biggest single tragedy of the brief capitulation of Kunduz to Taliban militants, and there is no suggestion that the mistake was the result of a lack of clarity over the rules of engagement. But the 700-page report, much of it blacked out for security reasons, sheds light on how the rules are not fully understood, even by some troops on the ground, compromising the mission to stabilise the nation and defeat a worsening Islamist insurgency. The issues exposed in the report are likely to be considered by the

new U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, as he prepares to makes recommendations in the coming weeks that may clarify or expand the level of combat support the U.S.-led training mission can provide. “It’s not a strategy and, in fact, it’s a recipe for disaster in that kind of kinetic environment,” said the soldier, who, like others in the report, was not identified. North Korea expels 3 BBC journalists, complains of coverage BEIJING — North Korea on Monday expelled three BBC journalists it had detained days earlier for allegedly “insulting the dignity” of the authoritarian country, sending them off on a flight to Beijing. Correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and his team had been scheduled to leave Friday after accompanying a group of Nobel laureates on a North Korea trip. Instead, the journalists were stopped at the Pyongyang airport, detained and questioned. O Ryong Il, secretary-general of the North’s National Peace Committee, said Wingfield-Hayes’ news coverage distorted facts and “spoke ill of the system and the leadership of the country.” He said WingfieldHayes wrote an apology, was being expelled Monday and would never be admitted into the country again. The BBC said Wingfield-Hayes’ producer Maria Byrne and cameraman Matthew Goddard were also detained and expelled. The three arrived in Beijing on a flight Monday evening. WingfieldHayes said only that he was glad to be out and would have a statement later. Barcelona routed city rival Espanyol 5-0 on Sunday to increase its lead going into next weekend, when another victory will secure the Catalan club its second consecutive title. Luis Suarez scored twice, with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Rafinha adding one goal each at the Camp Nou to keep Barcelona one point in front of Real Madrid, which defeated Valencia 3-2 with two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and one by Karim Benzema. Atletico Madrid, which was trailing Barcelona for most of the season and was tied in points before this weekend, dropped out of contention after a surprising 2-1 late loss to already relegated Levante. Atletico had been bidding for its second league title in three seasons. In the final round, Barcelona will play at Granada, which was fighting against relegation but on Sunday mathematically secured its place in the top flight with a 4-1 win at Sevilla. Romania suspends license of ambulance that transported Ekeng BUCHAREST — Romania’s interior ministry has suspended the license of a private ambulance company that transported Dinamo Bucharest and Cameroon midfielder Patrick Ekeng to hospital after he collapsed on the pitch during a match on Friday. He died later in hospital. The ministry said in a statement late Sunday it found defibrillators with expired batteries in some ambulances belonging to Puls, and medicine used in resuscitation procedures that had expired.. Ekeng, 26, collapsed on the pitch seven minutes after going on as a substitute against Viitorul Constanta. He was taken a short distance to the hospital where doctors tried for more than an hour to resuscitate him. The ministry suspended Puls’ license for one month to remedy the situation and fined it 23,800 lei ($6,050).(ap)

Platini to resign after CAS Matic lauds Terry after red imposes 4-year ban from soccer card set to end Chelsea career GENEVA — Michel Platini will resign as UEFA president after failing to overturn his ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which cut his sanction from six to four years. Platini called the verdict a “deep injustice” and said he will now step down from the UEFA position he has held since 2007. CAS effectively removed Platini from world soccer by ensuring his ban “corresponds to the duration of a presidential term,” the court said in a statement. Platini’s current UEFA mandate expires in March 2019, and the next FIFA presidential election is due in May 2019. “This decision is inflicting me a suspension whose length will de facto prevent me — as if by chance — from bidding for the next FIFA presidential election,” Platini said in a statement. Leaving UEFA also frees him to pursue an appeal to Swiss courts and “establish my integrity in this case,” Platini said. Switzerland’s supreme court can overturn verdicts if legal process is abused but will not re-judge the evidence. The court ruled that Platini was guilty of conflict of interest for taking a $2 million payment from FIFA approved by Sepp Blatter in 2011. The money was uncontracted extra salary for working as Blatter’s presidential adviser from 1999-2002, and was largely unknown until it was revealed by Swiss federal prosecutors last September. The CAS panel “was not convinced by the legitimacy of the 2,000,000 Swiss francs payment, which was only recognized by Mr. Platini and Mr. Blatter,” the CAS statement said. Pentagon report reveals confusion among US troops over Afghan mission KABUL - Amid fierce fighting after the Taliban captured the northern Afghan city of Kunduz last year, U.S. special forces advisers repeatedly asked their commanders how far they were allowed to go to help local troops retake the city. They got no answer, according to witnesses interviewed in a recently declassified, heavily redacted Pentagon report that lays bare the confusion over rules of engagement governing the mission in Afghanistan. As the Taliban insurgency gathers strength, avoiding enemy fire has become increasingly difficult for advisers, who have been acting as consultants rather than combatants since NATO forces formally ceased fighting at the end of 2014. In the heat of the battle, lines can be blurred, and the problem is not exclusive to Afghanistan: questions have arisen over the role of U.S. troops in Iraq after a U.S. Navy SEAL was killed by Islamic State this month. “’How far do you want to go?’ is not a proper response to ‘How far

do you want us to go?’” one special forces member told investigators in a report into the U.S. air strikes on a hospital in Kunduz that killed 42 medical staff, patients and caretakers. That incident was the biggest single tragedy of the brief capitulation of Kunduz to Taliban militants, and there is no suggestion that the mistake was the result of a lack of clarity over the rules of engagement. But the 700-page report, much of it blacked out for security reasons, sheds light on how the rules are not fully understood, even by some troops on the ground, compromising the mission to stabilise the nation and defeat a worsening Islamist insurgency. The issues exposed in the report are likely to be considered by the

new U.S. commander in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson, as he prepares to makes recommendations in the coming weeks that may clarify or expand the level of combat support the U.S.-led training mission can provide. “It’s not a strategy and, in fact, it’s a recipe for disaster in that kind of kinetic environment,” said the soldier, who, like others in the report, was not identified. He added that his unit, whose role was to advise and assist Afghan forces without engaging in combat, asked three times for commanders to clarify the rules governing their mission. “Sadly, the only sounds audible were the sounds of crickets ... though those were hard to hear over the gunfire.” (rtr)

North Korea expels 3 BBC journalists, complains of coverage BEIJING — North Korea on Monday expelled three BBC journalists it had detained days earlier for allegedly “insulting the dignity” of the authoritarian country, sending them off on a flight to Beijing. Correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and his team had been scheduled to leave Friday after accompanying a group of Nobel laureates on a North Korea trip. Instead, the journalists were stopped at the Pyongyang airport, detained and questioned. O Ryong Il, secretary-general of the North’s National Peace Committee, said Wingfield-Hayes’ news coverage distorted facts and “spoke ill of the system and the leadership of the country.” He said WingfieldHayes wrote an apology, was being expelled Monday and would never be admitted into the country again. The BBC said Wingfield-Hayes’ producer Maria Byrne and cameraman Matthew Goddard were also detained and expelled. The three arrived in Beijing on a flight Monday evening. WingfieldHayes said only that he was glad to be out and would have a statement later. His colleagues did not speak. “We are very disappointed that our reporter Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and his team have been deported from North Korea after the government took offense at material he had filed,” the BBC said in a statement. “Four BBC staff, who were invited to cover the Workers’ Party Congress, remain in North Korea and we expect them to be allowed to continue their reporting.” North Korea did not reveal which of the team’s reports it was upset with, but in one of the segments, North Korean officials are seen arguing with Wingfield-Hayes over video shot in front of a statue of national founder Kim Il Sung. “They clearly felt that we said stuff that was not respectful to the great leader,” Wingfield-Hayes said in the segment. 300 economists urge leaders to reject tax havens

LONDON — Hundreds of economists are urging world leaders to end the era of tax havens, arguing they only benefit rich individuals and multinational corporations and serve to increase inequality. Long weekend holiday has caused traffic jam at the Gilimanuk crossing since Saturday afternoon (May 7).

TABANAN - Pura Luhur Besi Kalung, located in Utu Customary Village, Penebel Tabanan has the distinct feature of being home to a Linga Yoni with a chainlike necklace that gongs when struck. It is therefore assumed that the chain necklace is made of steel from which the name “Besi” (steel) comes from. It is believed that if the Linga Yoni slants to one side it foretells a national disaster. Head of Pura Luhur Besi Kalung, accompanied by public relations officer Made Subagia said on Monday that the Linga Yoni in fact slanted in 2013 just before earthquakes and volcanic eruptions shook the island of Java. The Lina Yoni had been slanting for a month before the natural disasters and came back to its straightened position on its own. “It slanted in 1932, 1945, 1965 and again in 1998 just before the national reformation”, he said. The Linga Yoni stands in the innermost sanctum of the temple at the main shrine (Linggih Ageng) .There is a stepped stone structure leading up to the Lingga Yoni and at its base there is special ‘tabernacle’ where officiating priests sit. This area cannot be approached by just anyone and even those who do so, do not dare touch the Lingga Yoni.

The only person who steps on the stone step structure is Tabanan Palace’s Ida Tjokorda Tabanan, the head priest of Pura Luhur Besi Kalung and the head priest of Pura Luhur Batukaru Temple with permission from Ageng Luhur Besi Kalung, Someone once accidently sat on the ‘tabernacle’ and as Subagia describes, the person was immediately possessed and died two weeks later. Police divert traffic, queue reaches three kilometers

NEGARA - Long weekend holiday has caused traffic jam at the Gilimanuk crossing since Saturday afternoon (May 7). Peak of the backflow traffic occurred last Saturday night dominated by private cars. Jembrana Police authorities applied traffic engineering by breaking the queues and diverting them to the alleys at the neighborhood behind the Gilimanuk Market. From the information got on Sunday (May 8), the queue of private cars has been snaking to the exit of the harbor since Saturday afternoon. Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, together with the Deputy Chief A.A. Rai Laba came down to set the queue at Gilimanuk. At least 150 police personnel were deployed along the road heading for the harbor. Chief of Jembrana Police Traffic Affairs, Gede Sumadra Kerthiawan, said

that the queue has been predicted to occur at the weekend. “We apply traffic engineering to avoid long queue and diverted private cars to alleys directly leading to maneuver parking,” he said. Private cars were diverted to pass through two alleys at the neighborhoods. The queue could reach about three kilometers from the entrance to the Gilimanuk harbor. WELLINGTON - Wealthy Latin Americans are using secretive, tax-free New Zealand shelf companies and trusts to help channel funds around the world, according to a report on Monday based on leaks of the so-called Panama Papers. Pressure is mounting on Prime Minister John Key to take action after local media analysed more than 61,000 documents relating to New Zealand that are part of the massive leak of data from Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm. The papers have shone spotlight on how the world’s rich take advantage of offshore tax regimes. Mossack Fonseca actively promoted New Zealand as a good place to do business due to its tax-free status, high levels of confidentiality and legal security, according to a joint report by Radio New Zealand, TVNZ and investigative journalist Nicky Hager. Key said it was “utterly incorrect” that New Zealand was a tax haven, adding he was open to changing rules around foreign trusts if advised by a review or the OECD.

“If there’s any need for change in this area, the government will consider it and if necessary, take action,” Key told reporters. The government was asking the Ministry of Justice to move quickly on rules already under consideration to tighten anti-money laundering requirements for lawyers, real estates and accountants, he added. Opposition Labour Party Leader Andrew Little said the government must act to “preserve New Zealand’s reputation by shutting down the system that sees our country implicated in a massive global network of tax avoidance.” The New Zealand government said last month it would begin a review of its foreign trust laws after the Panama Papers highlighted vulnerabilities in its legal framework that made it a possible link in international tax avoidance structures because its foreign trusts are not subject to tax. WASHINGTON - It was a creature so outlandish that scientists say it reminds them of the fanciful beasts conjured up by Dr. Seuss. But would the famous children’s book author have thought up a marine reptile with a hammerhead snout it used to snack on algae? Scientists on Friday announced the discovery in southern China of new fossils of a reptile from 242 million years ago called Atopodentatus that clarify the nature of this strange crocodile-sized, plant-eating sea-dweller. When the first fossils of Atopodentatus were found in 2014, scientists thought, based on its poorly preserved skull, it had a down-turned snout resembling a flamingo’s beak with a

vertical, zipper-like mouth. But two new fossil specimens, described in research published in the journal Science Advances, resolved the matter. “On a scale of weirdness, I think this is up there with the best. It kind of reminds me of some of the Dr. Seuss creations,” National Museums Scotland paleontologist Nicholas Fraser said. Atopodentatus is the earliestknown herbivorous marine reptile,

said paleontologist Olivier Rieppel of the Field Museum in Chicago. Atopodentatus apparently used chisel-like teeth along the edge of its blunt, hammer-shaped snout to scrape algae off hard underwater surfaces. It then quickly opened its mouth to create suction before closing its jaws to filter the plant material through densely packed and needle-shaped teeth much like baleen whales strain tiny shrimp-like krill from seawater.

Atopodentatus, about 9 feet (2.75 meters) long, lived in a shallow sea in China’s Yunnan province alongside fish and other marine reptiles, said paleontologist Chun Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. When thinking of hammerhead creatures, sharks may come to mind. But Atopodentatus’ hammerhead feature differed in location and function from the sharks, whose eyes are on the end of lateral extensions on their head. Atopodentatus appeared during the Triassic Period relatively soon

after the biggest mass extinction of species in Earth’s history, illustrating that life was bouncing back nicely. Other oddball creatures also swam the seas at the time, including a reptile called Dinocephalosaurus whose neck comprised half of its 17-foot (5.25 meters) length. “If you saw this reptile (Atopodentatus) in isolation cruising around with some of the fishes of the day, I think you would say it was really quite absurd,” Fraser said. “But alongside some of its fellow denizens of the deep, I think it would just appear as one more oddity in a mesmerizing world.” (rtr)

After that, the government of Bangli strengthened the recognition by issuing the Regional Bylaw No.4/2015 about the amendment to regional bylaw No. 02/2010 on the conservation area for Kintamani dog. In the regional bylaw No.04/2015, the government of Bangli gives recognition to Kintamani dogs with the colors like white, black, brown and brindled. “In the regional bylaw is also mentioned about the development area for dog conservation namely the Sukawana, Siakin and Pinggan village,” he explained. According to Gianyar, the challenge faced by the development of Kintamani dog all this time is not only related to the restricted number of kennel, but also the threat of infectious animal diseases, especially rabies. “The outbreak of rabies cases and mitigation effort need to get support from the community. Through this Kintamani dog con-

test, we want to invite and educate people so as to pay more attention to the welfare of their pet. At the same time, it will provide the opportunities for Kintamani dog to become a host in its own region as long as complying with the correct caring procedures,” he explained. In the meantime, the dog contest committee, Sri Rahayu said that the dog contest is held in cooperation with the Bangli Livestock and Agriculture Agency, Department of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University and the All-Indonesia Kennel Club (Perkin) of Bali region. The Kintamani dog contest this time is followed by a number of participants consisting of dog breeders at Sukawana and general public. The dog contest is divided into two sessions, namely the first session consisting of local dog breeders of Sukawana village dogs and the session for general public. There are three categories contested by age, namely 3-6 months, 6-9 months age and the adult category. Mercury makes rare move across the sun CAPE CANAVERAL — Mercury has begun a relatively rare move across the sun. The solar-planetary ballet got underway just after 7 a.m. on the east coast with the smallest planet appearing as a tiny black dot on the face of the sun. The transit will last for a total of about 7½ hours. The last time it happened was 2006. It will happen again three years from now, but then not until 2032. NASA says the

event occurs only about 13 times a century. The entirety of Mercury’s journey will be viewable to the eastern U.S. and Canada, as well as most of western Europe and South America. To catch a glimpse, viewers need binoculars or telescopes with protective solar filters. Mercury’s journey can also be seen via a livestream on NASA’s website. (ap)

Like the town park belonging to other districts, the town park to be built by the government of Bangli will also include some public facilities and fountains. Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, when met recently said that the Captain Mudita Square so far having been used by most people to exercise will be transformed into a town park. According to the plan, the town park will be established in 2017. “Its detailed engineering design has been already prepared this year,” he explained. As planned, the town park of Bangli will be equipped with a number of public facilities. One of them is a playground for chil-

With only four employees ot is sometimes hard to get all the mushrooms to the supermarket by 5:00AM. She also faced challenges in terms of capital and cash flow. Sometimes, payments are not made in accordance with the agreement of the MoU so cash flow is hard to predict. This year was especially challenging because of the extremely hot weather between December 2016 and March 2016. Normally, she can harvest about 1,0000 mushrooms a day or 15 kg. But

with the lack of rain the same 1,000 mushrooms only yielded 5-10 kg. “With 6,000 mushrooms, I should be able to yield 90 kg a day, but this year it was far less than that. The same kind of thing has been experienced by many farmers” said the young woman from Peguyangan Kaja. The amount of mushrooms supplied from Java is also minimal, making it hard to make up for shortages here. Rusadi has been forced to only meet the demands of some of her clients and not others. Steven Limantoro, a hydroponic vegetable farmer, also said that he is unable to meet the demands of hotels and supermarkets because he only has an area of 5x5 meters of land in his courtyard to grow on. “A 1,000

square meter garden can produce enough to meet the demands of 2 or 3 supermarkets. But my 5x5 meters garden can only grow 360 plants, which is not enough to supply supermarkets, we can only supply 1 or 2 restaurants or cafes” he explained. Meeting the demand for vegetables, depends on how much is required. Limantoro can produce about 10kg a day which is enough to supply a restaurant or café. Hotels are generally supplied seasonally. During the holiday season, hotels will demand about 3- 5 kg of each vegetable every day, so Limantoro can meet this demand unless he can access more land. “Meeting the demands of supermarkets requires at least 200-300 square meters of land”, he added. Such floods frequently inundated half of the main road section leading to the area of Tuban, Jimbaran to Nusa-Dua during high tides. “Indeed this frequently occurs, so that this seawater flooding is not for the first time. However, to resolve this we must make coordination with the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar,” he said. According to him, the area inundated by seawater flooding belongs to national road section, while the authority for the national road lies in the agency. “The tidal flooding on the bypass road happens due to sedimentation of Benoa Bay, so that solution to this problem is dredging the sedimentation,” he affirmed. He said the effort to overcome the sedimentation at Benoa Bay will be coordinated by the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar to central government. “To resolve this problem, the agency will coordinate with central government,” he said. Planning Section Head of the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar, Hendro Satrio, when contacted separately said that associated with the tidal flood on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Tuban, his agency was still checking. “Thanks for the information and our team will check it,” he said briefly. Previously, the Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta has

Thus, it impedes the flow of water. my opinion, it (sedimentation— Ed) must be dredged by the government of Badung, not by other parties. If the normalization is done from the Mati River the water will flow to the Benoa Bay. So, our concept is to normalize,” he said. He said the normalization must be taken to restore the area as ever before. Normalization is very much different from reclamation. Normalization restores the area to the original condition, while reclamation is the process of backfilling to make new territory. “Similar normalization needs to be done to bare mangrove forests. Mangroves should be reforested in the areas having been defoliate. Pudut Island area will also be normalized, but we emphasize here not to change the original order,” he concluded. (kmb27)

The tentpole has already topped the final domestic total of 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” at $176.6 million and should eclipse 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at $259 million by the end of next weekend. The marketing for “Civil War” clearly resonated with moviegoers, as it promised an epic fight between Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, plus the introduction of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

With its apt title, “Mother’s Day” saw an impressive 7% rise in business during the Mother’s Day weekend following a so-so opening frame. ATHENS - Police come under attack as largely peaceful protests against controversial tax and pension changes in Greece turn ugly. Police have been pelted with petrol bombs in Athens as Greece passed unpopular tax and pensions reforms. Thousands of protesters took to the streets ahead of a vote that the government hopes will unlock bailout cash and pave the way for progress on debt relief when eurozone finance ministers meet on Monday. The demonstrations outside parliament in the capital and in Thessaloniki were largely peaceful, but small groups of protesters attacked riot police, who responded with tear gas. Inside the parliament building, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras survived a crucial test of his wafer-thin majority, as all 153

of the ruling coalition’s lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament voted in favour of the changes. The reforms will reduce some pension payouts, merge a number of pension funds, increase social security contributions and put up taxes for middle and high earners. The measures have been deeply unpopu-

lar with anti-austerity campaigners and trade unions, but Mr Tsipras argued they would not affect most pensioners and moved the country towards a “sustainable” system. “We have an important opportunity before us for the country to break this vicious cycle, and enter a virtuous cycle,” he told lawmakers. But he came under attack from opposition leaders, who accused him of betraying voters who re-elected his government last September on promises to ease the pain of austerity and protect pensions. “Mr Prime Minister, you promised hope and turned it into despair,” said Fofi Gennimata, leader of the

opposition PASOK socialists. “The measures will be a tombstone for growth prospects,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the conservative New Democracy party which leads in opinion polls. The package aims to generate savings equivalent to 3% of GDP, raising income tax for high earners, lowering tax-free thresholds and increasing a so-called “solidarity tax”. More taxes could be in the offing, with newspapers reporting on Monday that Greece plans to increase VAT and introduce additional taxes on fuel and tobacco, overnight hotel stays and internet use.
