‘Daredevil’ brings Marvel comic punch to Netflix

WASHINGTON - From the pages of a comic book that first came out in the Sixties comes the latest superhero to score a comeback on American television. “Marvel’s Daredevil” is the first of five Netflix original series to be rolled out by under a groundbreaking deal with Marvel Comics. Debuting on Friday, it stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a young, blind lawyer who morphs into a baton-wielding masked vigilante after dark. Blessed with extrasensory powers, Murdock -- alias Daredevil, “the man without fear” -- embarks on a lone quest for justice in New York’s mean streets. Netflix is releasing all 13 episodes of “Daredevil” on Friday, giving its 60 million US and foreign subscribers a binge-viewing option for the weekend. The A-list heroes of The Avengers franchise have already become a multi-million dollar Hollywood phenomenon, now television executives are trawling Marvel’s vast back catalog for less iconic but still fondly remembered characters. Plans call for Netflix to roll out three addi-

tional series in the coming months, each pivoting around another Marvel character -- Jessica “Jewel” Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Ultimately, the superheroes will all come together as an dynamic crime-fighting foursome in a yet-to-be-name mini-series for the expanding video-on-demand service. Shows adapted from comic books have been a highlight of the current US television season, from the Batman prequel “Gotham” on Fox to “The Flash” on The CW network. ATLANTA — Wale always wanted to feature Jerry Seinfeld in his music, but didn’t know how to reach the superstar actorcomedian, who initially knew nothing about the rapper. But then the Grammy-nominated performer met Seinfeld’s wife, a Wale fan and hip-hop enthusiast. “She’s a big hip-hop fan and of my music,” Wale said of Jessica Seinfeld, a cookbook author and philanthropist who Wale said has many friends in the hip-hop industry, including Jay Z. “She was the middle man on a lot of things because Jerry is super busy. He’s not an easy person to reach. But she was able to put it all together.” Sure, some would call Wale and Seinfeld an odd couple. But when they met, Wale said, they instantly clicked. The duo spent two years working together and Wale calls their chemistry “natural.” Now, the rapper is eager for listeners to hear the finish product, “The Album About Nothing,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week and dethroned Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly.” “I liked his outlook on certain things. He’s super smart,” Wale said of Seinfeld. “He’s a wise person that I can learn a lot from and knows about the entertainment business.” Seinfeld isn’t rapping on the album. The performer, 31, said he fell into depression and turned to drugs following those hardships. “That was a tough period for me. It was a struggle for me after those incidents. Everything almost happened at once,” Wale said. Wale said he was also unhappy with the direction of his career, believing he wasn’t getting the same respect as his competitors like Lamar, Drake and J. Cole. He said reading negative comments on social media about his music and character disturbed him, though he didn’t let it completely dominate his thoughts. “I know I’m in good company,” he said. “Each of them has told me my work was incredible. ... PDI-P Denpasar expected to voice rejection of “Benoa Reclamation” in congress

DENPASAR - Cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) doubling as a member of the House of Representatives of the RI, Nyoman Damantra, believed that the the rejection of the Benoa Bay reclamation project, as expressed by the people of Bali, would be on the agenda of things to bediscussed by the PDI-P’s Congress IV when the congress opened on Thursday (Apr. 9). He also hoped that the PDI-P Denpasar who had previously rejected the Benoa Reclamation would continue to voice their opinion. “The PDI-P Denpasar as representatives of the cadres, sympathizers and other component of society who have voiced a mass opposition to the reclamation project, should be sensitive about dealing with public opinion within the Bali House and continue to voice hand struggle for the mass rejection of the project during the congressional forum,” said Damantra. According to the statutes and bylaws, congress is the highest level governmental forum and combines the results of all other forums from all levels of the government down to the hamlet level. These forums are part of a process carried out to prepare the party program based on material that speaks of regional aspirations for the congressional

forum. County branches of the PDI-P from all over Indonesia, representing the aspirations of all strata of the party in the counties and municipalities serve to voice the aspirations of their respective regions. Any major issues expressed by the people need to be addressed by the parties, such

as for example the mass rejection of the Benoa Bay Reclamation Project. Damantra said that any attempt to distort

such opinions by omission in the congressional forum or otherwise will have adverse effects on the party’s ability to have their policy’s inacted in the different regions due to the dissolution of good political relations that such distortions would cause. If the congress rejects the policy of Benoa Bay reclamation, said Damantra, it will become a final decision for the party cadres in the executive and legislative to promote the aspirations of the Balinese people. The decision of congress can also become the basis for requesting that President Jokowi as an officer of the PDI-P party to immediately revoke Presidential Decree No. 51/2014 legalizing the reclamation. “If the party congress decides to support the rejection against the Benoa Bay reclamation it will be obligatory for President Jokowi as party cadre to revoke Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014 and cancel the government policy which allows for the reclamation at Benoa Bay,” said Damantra. According to Damantra, Presidential Regulation No. 51/2014 is proof

that the government, with its mandate to look into environmental issues, is only examining the physical aspects and has failed to provide recognition and respect for existing traditions and cultures that constitute a part of the local knowledge of Bali that calls for the spirit of harmonizing human relationship to natural and spiritual realm through the Tri Hita Karana concept. Not to mention the economic aspects of Bali that would be affected through development expansion through land conversion such as reclamation which causes the acceleration of investment growth that marginalizases Balinese people by deceasing their competitiveness. Balinese community leader and economic and government analyst, Wiraguna Bagoes Oka, very much deplored the statement of the Chairman of the PDI-P Bali Wayan Koster who said that reclamation is no longer the responsibility of the PDI-P. “It is a reckless, surprising and alarming statement. Additinally the statement goes against the values of the PDI-P, known as the party of the poor,” said Wiraguna.

On strike, dozens of cargo ships crowded Gilimanuk Harbor

NEGARA - The crossing service of freight vehicles at Gilimanuk on Wednesday (Apr. 8) was disrupted following the strike carried out by ship companies at Ketapang Harbor, Banyuwangi. Such an action was triggered by the decision of the Director General of Land Transportation on the ban for the use of LCT ship as crossing transport. Based on information, at least 14 freighters (LCT) belonging to nine companies chose not to serve the crossings from the morning. Although the ASDP authority has anticipated by directing trucks and passenger cars to cargo ship, in the afternoon more and more freight vehicles queue in parking area of LCM pier of Gilimanuk. A number of drivers claimed they usually do not queue for long time to get into the ship. At the

LCM dock was only served by three passenger ships. To give announcement, the port authority installed a banner of notification regarding the non-operation of LCT ship. A number of drivers hoped the harbor authority to provide more ships to serve the crossings at LCM pier. Most freight vehicles are also urged by the time limit to deliver their freight to respective destination. Operations Manager of the ASDP Gilimanuk, Wahyudi Susianto, told reporters on Wednesday (Apr. 8) that a total of 14 LCT ships are on strike following the Decision of the Director General of Land Transportation. According to him, the new rules for LCT ship will be effective in May. However, due to protesting, a number of LCT ship companies

chose not to operate. Based on information, the strike will last until unspecified time. In the letter made by the LCT companies, they requested to be allowed to operate until 2017. Harbor authority alerted three passengers ships that can anchor at cargo pier to serve the crossing of cargo ship and the passenger ship can also help load trucks with the freight less than 20 tons. It is predicted there will be an accumulation of freight vehicles until night with the reduction of freighter. Price of 12-kg LPG expensive, turnover of food traders down 50 percent BANGLI - The impact of price increase of the 12-kg LPG occurred since April 1, 2015 reaching IDR 8,000 per tube began to be felt by a number of food vendors in Bangli County. According to her, even though the price of LPG has increased, she has no plan to raise the price of food and reduce the portion. “At the low price we have lacked of buyers, let alone the price of food is increased, it will be getting lonelier,” she added. Swandewi explained that raising the selling price of food is not easy. It does not only consider the price hike of LPG, but also the selling environment. According to her, if she raises the price of meal, her customers will move to other food stalls offering cheaper price. “I am still selling as usual and do not dare to raise prices as long as I can still earn profits,” she said. Similar thing is also experienced by a trader living around the Captain Mudita Square, Mrs. Putu. She told that since using the 12-kg LPG, she often loses money because the money runs out to buy gas. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. NYC’s Easter Parade brings out creative hats

NEW YORK — The bonnets were out on Fifth Avenue for the annual Easter Parade — outlandish 21st century headpieces that were hardly bonnets, featuring everything from bunnies and butterflies to grassy, egg-dotted lawns and even a tall ship on the high seas. And the parade is hardly a parade. Instead, while Easter Sunday Mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, with Cardinal Timothy Dolan at the altar, the avenue was milling with people decked out in homemade costumes that seem to get zanier each year. The crowd included Christians, Jews, Hindus, agnostics, atheists and others who felt like strolling around Manhattan on a sunny spring day, including hundreds of tourists. “It’s all about versatility,” said Mary Anna Smith, a New York custom milliner whose business card reads “The Tipsy Topper.” The 2015 Easter Parade bore little resemblance to the first one, which started in the 1880s as a strolling display of what prosperous New Yorkers wore to Fifth Avenue churches. In recent decades, the street gathering has morphed into a sort of costume circus — including pet dogs. Smith wore a “hat” she fashioned from an elaborate kite and some fluffy white stuff into a bright blue sailing ship floating on sea foam. “It’s about sailing to new heights,” said Smith. She also created headpieces for two friends, one topped with a massive butterfly and another with a tropical umbrella dripping with felt balls and anchored to a bird’s nest, then to human hair. Counterfeit money circulating in Bali reaches 1,447 sheets

DENPASAR - Representatives of the Office of Bank Indonesia (BI) for Bali Province discovered 1,447 sheets of counterfeit money circulating in Bali. For the same periode last year time last year they only found 1,155 sheets. “A full 81 percent or 1, 290 sheets of the counterfeit cash was found in Denpasar while 8 percent or 111 sheets were found in Badung County, and Tabanan County had 6 percent or 31 sheets,” said Dewi Setyowati. The counterfeit money, said the Chief Representative Office of the Bank Indonesia for Bali, D ew i S e ty o w a ti , w a s f o u n d thanks to reports from the public. “The amounts of counterfeit money being discovered means that the public is getting better at creating credible rupiah. It is also clear that many people are reluc-

tant to report counterfeit money to central bank authorities,” she explained. No isolation room, patients evacuated

AMLAPURA - The absences of isolation rooms in Karangasem Hospital means that patients are forced out of their rooms to make room for patients with diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV/ AIDS and rabies so that these diseases are not spread to others. The Development Division Head of Karangasem Hospital, I Nengah Widia Sari, admitted that because there is no isolation room for the hospitalization of patients with

hazardous communicable diseases “we put the patients with infectious diseases in the rooms, while other patients are removed to avoid transmission” he explained.

For this reason, plans are on the table for the construction of two isolation rooms with three beds per room. “We will also add 6 beds to the internal disease room known

as the Mawar room which will be made larger as part of the renovations. as well. Presently patients are often treated in the hallway. We will build these rooms and renovate the other room this year, with the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) from the central government,” he said.

Despite not having an isolation room, Karangasem Hospital does its best to treat patients with infectious disease. When they are unable to do so according to required procedures, patients are reffered to Sanglah Hospital. They hope to complete renovations by December. (dwa)

TABANAN - The appearance of Subak Museum is no longer shabby. Thanks to renovations that were made in 2012 with the help of the Ministry of Education and Culture and continued in 2014, the traditional Balinese rice farmers houses and the rest of the museum are now in excellent condition. Director of the Subak Museum, Ida Ayu Ratna Pawitrani, said on Wednesday (Apr. 8) that the museum revitalization program was funded IDR 1 billion by the state budget With this initial funding the inside of the museum was repaired and renovated as were the displays. “Since this revitalization program was considered to be the primary fac-

tor in boosting the number of tourist visits, we then proposed stage two of the revitalization program,” she said. After the renovations, there was an increase of tourist visits to the museum so the central government disbursed another DR 2 billion in 2014. The assistance worth IDR 2 billion was subsequently used to renovate the outdoor portion of the museum, including the miniature subak irrigation network as well as the traditional Balinese farmer’s houses. The paddy field has also been equipped with a subak meeting hall from which travellers can enjoy the view. “The hall was created to attract tourists” she said. Pawitrani explained that after

the renovations many foreign and domestic travelers visited the Subak Museum. Data on tourist visit within the past five years indicatea consistent increase, although it is still dominated by visits from domestic travelers. In 2013, 4,433 people visited, while in 2014 the number of visitors increased to 4,627 people. “They are mostly school children from around Bali and college students,” she said. On the site of the museum, there are 250 pieces of old farm equipment, ranging from hoes to rice processing equipment. She said that the Subak Museum is the only one in Bali having and opened in 1981, and has been managed by Tabanan County

since 1994. The museum covers 6.28 hectares, of land with an additional 1.3 hectares of paddy fields. Once the revitalization project is completed, management of the museum will team up with schools to introduce the history and collections of the museum through a program called the ‘museum goes to school.’ Students will be introduced to subak through the screening of a film followed by a discussion on the museum and subak. “As planned, we are going to target junior and high school students, but it is still difficult to reach elementary schools. TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s president on Thursday warned Saudi Arabia and its allies that their airstrikes’ campaign in Yemen is a “mistake” and called for a halt to the strikes targeting the Iran-backed Shiite rebels who have seized much of the impoverished Arabian Peninsula country. For two weeks now, the Saudi-led coalition has failed to stop the power grab by the Houthi rebels, whose advance has forced President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to flee the country. South Korea central bank French socialists slashes 2015 growth forecast announce measures to

SEOUL - South Korea’s central bank on Thursday slashed its 2015 economic growth forecast for the second time this year and predicted annual inflation would drop below the 1.0 percent mark. The monthly monetary meeting of the Bank of Korea (BOK) also left its benchmark interest rate unchanged for April, following a surprise 25 basis point reduction the previous month. The downward revision of the growth outlook reflected concerns that the economy is suffering from slow demand and lack of business and consumer confidence. The forecast had already been

lowered in January from 3.9 percent to 3.4 percent, but the BOK said Thursday it was now estimating growth for the year at 3.1 percent. It also said annual inflation was likely to come in at just 0.9 percent, compared to the bank’s earlier forecast of 1.9 percent. The South Korean economy has shown little signs of improvement since the BOK began lowering interest rates last year. The cut in March reduced the benchmark rate to a record low of 1.75 percent, deepening fears of deflation that could hammer an overgrown property market.

Consumer prices rose 0.4 percent in March from a year earlier -- the slowest pace for 16 years -while the exports that drive Asia’s fourth-largest economy have fallen in every month this year. Economic growth in the fourth quarter of last year was the slowest since 2009. Low interest rates are very much the trend across the Asia-Pacific region. In recent months China and India have both made two reductions, while Australia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand have also been forced to ease monetary policy. (afp)

Nonetheless Badung needs to come up with a detailed spatial plan (RDTR) that regulates future land usage,” he said. He asserted that, in the future, the government will not tolerate construction projects that build on agricultural land. Land that is built on will have to conform to the spatial plan. “The problem is that developments frequently violate the rules and regulations-it is the task of the government to enforce these rules and regulations,” he concluded. Cybercrime fighting group takes down Beebone botnet LONDON — A new group of international cybercrime fighters claimed one of its first kills Thursday, pulling the plug on malicious servers that hijacked at least 12,000 machines, most of them in the United States. The elimination of the Beebone botnet is an early success chalked up by the Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce, a coordination body created last year by the FBI, Britain’s National Crime Agency, Europol and host of other international law enforcement agencies. It’s also an illustration of the lengths many hackers go to defeat investigators. Beebone’s masters deployed shape-shifting software that updated itself up to 19 times a day. “From a techie’s perspective, they made it as difficult as they possibly could for us,” said Europol advisor Raj Samani, who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday, only an hour after authorities wrested the last rogue server from the criminals’ control. “It is possible that at the time of assembling, there might be a technical error which caused the explosion.” However the police chief said a bomb normally required a timer and a detonator, neither of which were discovered at the scene, though police were still investigating all options. JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has announced it will form a special team to investigate allegations of slavery in the fishing industry, as officials prepare to return hundreds of foreign crewmen to their homelands. The head of the fisheries ministry’s illegal fishing task force, Mas Achmad Santosa, said several fishermen had claimed that an Indonesian company, which employed more than 1,000 foreigners from several Southeast Asian nations, engaged in slavery and torture in the remote east of the country. The issue was a priority when President Joko Widodo chaired a cabinet meeting late Tuesday, with fisheries minister Susi Pudjiastuti declaring afterwards Indonesia must show it is serious about tackling the problem and stamping out illegal fishing. “We must solve this. It should never happen again, because it is embarrassing for Indonesia,” she said, announcing plans for the special team. The International Organization for Migration has estimated up to 4,000 fishermen may be stranded in remote parts of Indonesia, mostly dumped by illicit fishing operators. It believes the large majority of those working in the illegal fishing industry in Indonesia are victims of

trafficking. Fishermen from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand are among those said to have been forced to trawl Indonesia’s bountiful fishing grounds. All eyes on McIlroy and Woods as the Masters gets underway

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Two players seemingly headed in opposite directions are hogging all the headlines going into this year’s Masters. Rory McIlroy is trying to complete the career Grand Slam. Tiger Woods is looking to play 72 holes in a regular PGA Tour event for only the second time in the past year. But let’s not forget the other potential contenders, a lengthy list led by defending champion Bubba Watson. “I feel like I have a shot around here,” said Watson, who has won two of the past three Masters and can become only the fourth player to win back-to-back titles. “It doesn’t mean I’m going to do it. But I’m going to try to compete at a high level, and hopefully on Sunday we have that chance on the back nine.” The Masters is set to begin shortly after sunrise Thursday with ceremonial tee shots by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. Then, it gets serious. McIlroy is the clear favorite, having won the last two majors of 2014 (the British Open and the PGA Championship) to leave the Masters as the only big title missing from his resume. At age 25, he has a shot at joining Nicklaus, Woods, Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen in the exclusive club. “Golf is a very fickle game,” McIlroy said. “You don’t take anything for granted.” If he needs proof of that, all McIlroy has to do is remember what happened at this very place four years ago. He had a four-shot lead in the Masters, ready to be crowned the next big thing in golf, when he shot 80 in the final round. McIlroy

He is competing for the first time since Feb. 5, when he walked off the course at Torrey Pines to work on a game that made him look more like a weekend duffer than a 14-time major champion. Woods has shown much improvement in three days of practice, including nine holes he played Wednesday with Ben Crenshaw and Jordan Spieth. Then again, no one — not even Woods — is sure how he’ll play when the shots actually count. “I’m excited to be back, to be back playing at this level,” he said. “I feel like my game is finally ready to compete at this level, the highest level.” Even at different ends of the spectrum, McIlroy and Woods have dominated the talk so much this week that a large group of contenders has largely been ignored. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.
