Pineda plans solo album, but not leaving Journey Associated Press Writer

MANILA, Philippines — Arnel Pineda says he’s been putting together an album of his own compositions in his own voice to release this year, but he quashed rumors that he’s gearing up to leave the American rock band Journey. The Filipino singer and Journey lead vocalist said he will stay as long as the band needs him. Pineda also dismissed talk of a possible band reunion with former lead singer Steve Perry.

The singer spoke in an interview Tuesday during the launch of his version of the song “Charity” in the animated children’s music video “Cha-Ching” on Cartoon Network. The song about donating money or time to those in need can be purchased from iTunes to benefit Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines. The singer has been involved in charity projects in the Philippines. Having risen from poverty, he said it was his obligation to help those who struggle with difficulties he experienced. Pineda, now 46, was once a homeless teenager in Manila who at 15 started singing professionally with small bands.

He found success after Journey guitarist Neal Schon discovered him in 2007 on YouTube singing hits of Perry and sounding strikingly like him. “Even though I am still with (Journey) and we are touring, I am also working on my original materials and I am also recording them,” Pineda said, adding he aims to launch the album this year. This year, Journey is touring the United States and Canada, and next year will tour South America. On rumors of a Journey reunion with Perry, he said he has not heard any talk of that.

Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin to star on Broadway Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK — Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin are slated to star together on Broadway in Kenneth Lonergan’s play “This Is Our Youth,” a comedy about the high times and aimless lives of two disaffected young men. Lonergan said Tuesday that Cera, whose credits include “Arrested Development,” ‘’Juno” and “Superbad,” and Culkin, of “Igby Goes Down” and “Cider House Rules,” will bring the play to Broadway in the fall after a stop this summer at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company. All three will be making their Broadway debuts. The woman in the middle of the pair will be played by Tavi Gevinson, who founded a web magazine for teenage girls and acted in the film “Enough Said.” The production will be directed by Anna D. Shapiro and will have original music by Rostam Batmanglij of the band Vampire Weekend. “This is very exciting,” the playwright said by phone. “I’ve had many chances to do the play over the years in New York, and one reason I avoided it was because it’s very hard to cast. I’m very excited about this particular group of people.”

The play will be in Chicago from June 10 to July 27 and begin previews Aug. 18 on Broadway, with an opening night at the Corte Theatre set for Sept. 11. The play will be produced on Broadway by Scott Rudin. Set in 1982 at the beginning of the Reagan Era, the entire play takes place over two days at the Upper West Side apartment of Dennis, a narcissistic kid with wealthy parents. He gets an unexpected visit from his weird friend Warren, who fled home after having a disagreement with his dad and taking $15,000. They come up with a dangerous plan to return the money and avoid punishment: First use it to buy cocaine and then resell the coke at a profit so they can also party and attract the attention of Warren’s affections: 19-year-old Jessica Goldman. The play debuted offBroadway in 1996 and has over the years

featured such high-profile actors as Mark Ruffalo, Josh Hamilton, Matt Damon, Colin Hanks, Chris Klein, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anna Paquin. It was Lonergan’s first hit, and it changed his career. “It was a big turning point in my life,” he said, laughing. “This one gets done a lot because it’s got three big good parts for very young people so acting students tend to gravitate toward it. I think casting directors are sick of it.”

Bali Police personnel strengthen security in Gianyar Bali Post

GIANYAR - Hundreds of additional personnel from mass squad and the Bali Police Mobile Brigade were deployed to assist securing the legislative election, Wednesday (Apr 9). Approximately 114 personnel had been supplied to Gianyar Police directly in securing some points having been planned, Tuesday (Apr 8). Operations Division Head of Gianyar Police, Wayan Surata, said that for security during and after the voting day the Gianyar Police mobilized all personnel to secure the election with the code of Mantap Praja operation. Approximately 1,290 personnel of Gianyar Police were alerted and distributed to all villages including the polling stations. The security program was conducted pursuant to existing standard

operating procedure (SOP). Meanwhile, with the regard to the existence of electoral vulnerabilities, this former Operations Division Head of Negara Police judged that all locations had the potential of vulnerability. In securing the election, no critical points were given special attention. However, in this case the National Police considered all locations had potential of vulnerabilities. “All the places in the

matter of election are secured maximally,” he said. Although there were no particular critical points becoming the concern of the authorities, in terms of the supply of the Bali Police personnel, for the security of Gianyar region, they were spread into three security checkpoints. Polling Station 2 Pergung uses nearly collapsed building Bali Post

NEGARA - The roof of one of the polling stations at Pergung village, Mendoyo, almost collapses and is considered to be relocated by the Jembrana Electoral Commission. Polling Station (TPS) 2 Pergung utilizing the stadium grandstand is in critical condition where the roof has collapsed. So it is feared if it rains during the voting, the polling station will leak and be wet. As observation last Tuesday, the roof at the edge of the building did not only leak but already collapsed. The polling station took place between the collapsed roofs. The voting booths were also very close to the collapsed roofs. The Head of Voting Committee of Polling Station 2 Pergung, Nyoman Sedana, said the building had been frequently used for polling station. However, currently the roofs had collapsed. According to him, it could still be used because the polling station only used the space amidst the collapsed roofs. “There is no problem, either the booth or committee location did not collapse,” he explained. According to him, the polling station was intended for 426 voters and at Pergung there were totally 9 polling

stations. His party had confidence if it rained on the voting time, it would not leak nor turn wet due to the rain. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TOKYO — The Japanese scientist accused of falsifying data in a widely heralded stem-cell research paper said Wednesday the results are valid despite mistakes in presentation of the results. Haruko Obokata, 30, struggled to maintain her composure during a televised news conference packed with hundreds of reporters, but insisted she did not tamper with the data to fabricate results. She said she did not agree with retracting the research that appeared in the scientific journal Nature. The phenomenon of ordinary cells transforming into stem cells under the influence of external stimulus was “confirmed many times for a fact,” Obokata said at the press conference in the western city of Osaka. She said she could replicate her results again if allowed back into the lab to do so. She has contested allegations of research malpractice made by a panel of scientists at the government-funded Riken Center for Development Biology, where she is employed. Obokata said Riken had advised her not to speak publicly about the controversy. The event Wednesday, which lasted for over two hours, was her first public appearance in weeks and was made against doctors’ orders after seeking hospital treatment Monday. “I wasn’t able to sleep well and was feeling worse and worse,” she said. “I take this responsibility severely. SYDNEY — The agent for five-time Olympic gold medalist Ian Thorpe says the 31-year-old Australian will never swim again after contracting two potentially-deadly infections while undergoing shoulder surgery. James Erskine said Tuesday that Thorpe was “quite sick” in a Sydney hospital but dismissed media reports the swimmer might lose the use of his left arm. “He’s not in the intensive care,” Erskine said. “He’s just battling away. He’s spent weeks in hospital so it’s, from that point of view, a bit grim ... serious but not life-threatening.” Erskine said Thorpe contracted the infections during a series of operations

on his shoulder at a clinic near his home in the Swiss town of Ronco sopra Ascona. “From a competitive point of view he will not be swimming competitively again I don’t think,” Erskine said. “The shoulder operation was a major operation.” In February, Thorpe’s father revealed the swimmer is battling depression. The revelation followed an incident in which police were called when Thorpe was found in a disoriented state in a street near his parent’s Sydney home. He was taken to hospital for medical assessment and was found to have taken a combination of antidepressants and medication for his shoulder injury. Thorpe has since entered a rehabilitation program.

Gravels of ex-cable excavation project endangers motorists Bali Post

Information from local residents on Monday (Apr 7) mentioned if the cable excavation project along the Jalan Raya Payangan to T-junction of Buahan village had been conducted since a month ago. Then, the former pit was backfilled. Later on, when it rained and flooded, the sand mixed with gravels emerged and covered the asphalt surface. Local residents did not know for sure what company worked on the cable excavation project. One of the residents from Buahan, Ketut Dana Wirawan, said the amount of gravel mixed with sand emerging to the surface of pavement caused motorists to worry. Such condition made the road slippery and could cause people to slip. Any little mistake could cause people to slip on the road. “We expect these gravels can be cleaned up so as not to wait for the occurrence of accident,” he said. (kmb16)

A thief takes action at Sanglah Hospital Two motorcycles burglarized A motorcycle theft case occurred in the parking area of Kamadhuk Cooperative at Sanglah Hospital, Tuesday (Apr 8). Two motorcycles were almost taken away by the culprit. Fortunately, a parking attendant found something wrong with the motorcycles and then secured them. Parking Coordinator of Sanglah Hospital, AA Ngurah Gunanta, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. Unfortunately, none of the culprits were caught in the incident. According to Gunanta, a parking attendant in charge saw two motorcycles whose key had been burglarized. “Indeed, there was a man besides the motorcycle whose key was burglarized. However, the culprit could not be determined because there were no witnesses seeing the culprit when burglarizing the motorcycle,” said Gunanta. To be safe, the motorcycle whose key was burglarized was brought to the parking post. The motorcycle owner had to call a locksmith to fix the key having been damaged.

Dozens of employees claimed to have not received a holiday allowance (THR) usually received before the Nyepi or Day of Silence. In addition, until Monday, dozens of employees had not received the salary of March. Chairman of the Tourism Labor Union (SP Par) of Jimbarwana Unit, Agus Sasmita, said that a total of 30 employees were threatening to strike after their March salary had not been paid. “What should our family eat? IMF cuts Russia growth forecast

Ukraine’s crisis and the ensuing diplomatic confrontation between Moscow and Western powers deepened the country’s long-running recession and prompted major capital outflows from Russia after Washington slapped targeted sanctions on Moscow. In its World Economic Outlook report, the IMF cut its GDP growth forecast for Russia this year to 1.3 percent from 1.9 percent, blaming “emerging market financial turbulence and geopolitical tensions relating to Ukraine... on the back of already weak activity.” Russia’s deputy economy minister Andrei Klepach on Tuesday gave the bleakest prognosis yet for economic growth in 2014, saying it could be as low as 0.5 percent. He also said that in “certain conditions” the figure could go into the negative, alluding to possibly tighter Western sanctions. Last week he said that growth this year could fall short of 1 percent, while the World Bank late last month said the Russian economy might contract by 1.8 percent in 2014. In the Mayoral Regulation, the number of modern stores allowed to operate only reaches 295 units whether they belong to chain store or not. Law Enforcement Division Head of Denpasar Municipal Police, Wayan Wirawan, accompanied by Guidance and Control Section Head I Gede Sudana said on Tuesday (Apr 8) the modern store violated the Regional Bylaw No.6/2001 on the Building Permit or IMB, Regional Bylaw No.7/2005 concerning with permit of business premise and law of disturbance (SITU/HO). The newly opened modern stores did not get permission considering the existing quota of chain and non-chain modern stores were only 295 stores. “If there is a newly opened modern store, it means that it is breaking the existing rules and shall not operate,” said Wirawan. The Australian official coordinating the search expressed hope Wednesday that the wreckage will soon be found. Angus Houston, head of a joint agency coordinating the search for the missing plane in the southern Indian Ocean, said that the Australian naval vessel Ocean Shield picked up the two signals on Tuesday, and that an analysis of two sounds detected in the same area on Saturday showed they were consistent with a plane’s black boxes. “I’m now optimistic that we will find the aircraft, or what is left of the aircraft, in the not-too-distant future. But we haven’t found it yet, because this is a very challenging business,” Houston said at a news conference in Perth, the hub for the search operation. The signals detected 1,645 kilometers (1,020 miles) northwest of Perth are the strongest indication yet that the

plane crashed and is now lying at the bottom of the ocean in the area where the search is now focused. Still, Houston warned he could not yet conclude that searchers had pinpointed Flight 370’s crash site. “I think that we’re looking in the right area, but I’m not prepared to say, to confirm, anything until such time as somebody lays eyes on the wreckage,” he said. Finding the black boxes quickly is a matter of urgency because their locator beacons have a battery life of only about a month, and Tuesday marked exactly one month since the plane vanished on March 8 with 239 people on board. JAKARTA — A light aircraft crashed Wednesday in Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua, killing its American pilot and a passenger. Transportation ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said the U.S.-made Kodiak plane belongs

to a private religious foundation, Advent, and was carrying seven people when it crashed while tak-

ing off from an airstrip. The five surviving passengers were taken to a nearby hospital,

Ervan said. He identified the pilot only as Bob Robert. The private airstrip is located 20 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of Jayapura, the provincial capital. Indonesia, a sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million, has been plagued by transportation

accidents in recent years. Overcrowding, aging infrastructure and poor safety standards are often to blame. Flying is one of the main transportation means in Papua, the second biggest of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands.

It is precisely this hands-on approach and his image as a regular citizen that has set Jakarta governor Joko Widodo apart from an aloof, Suharto-era elite that long dominated Indonesian politics, and made him the frontrunner to be the country’s next president. “I think people are looking for someone who they feel they can associate with,” said Tobias Basuki, an analyst with the Jakarta-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies. “This is something new for Indonesians -- to have a leader who is also a grounded figure.” His party, the main opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), was on course to win the biggest share of the vote in Wednesday’s parliamentary polls, which will determine which parties can field candidates for July’s presidential election. The 52-year-old, known universally by his nickname “Jokowi”, came from a humble background, having grown up in a riverbank slum in Solo, central Java. He completed a forestry programme at an Indonesian university, worked in a business selling furniture, and then entered politics in 2005 as mayor of Solo. A survey by pollster Roy Morgan International last week found 45 percent of nearly 2,000 respondents said they would vote for Widodo at the presidential polls. It was a jump of about 10 percent from before his nomination and put him far ahead of his nearest rivals, ex-army general Prabowo Subianto

and tycoon Aburizal Bakrie. Some have doubts about whether a man who has no experience in national politics is ready to run the world’s biggest archipelago nation, however, pointing out he has spoken little about what his policies might be. “If he wins, he has a very steep learning curve -- it’s a much bigger operation to run the country than it is to run a city or a province,” said Paul Rowland, a Jakarta-based independent political analyst.

And long stretches of dominance over Spain in last year’s Confederations Cup semifinals — even though Spain eventually won in a penalty shootout. More than any others, those two matches epitomize the transformation that four-time winner Italy has undergone since its embarrassing first-round elimination from the 2010 World Cup as defending champion.
