NEW YORK - A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit accusing Cher of using a typeface created by Brooklyn, New York, graphic designer for her 2013 album “Closer to the Truth” without permission. Moshik Nadav had sought to hold Cher, her label Warner Bros Records and other defendants liable for having “copied the artistic elements” of his “Paris Logo” typography for the album, whose estimated sales worldwide top 500,000. U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan granted Nadav’s request to dismiss the copyright infringement case without prejudice, meaning it can be brought again. Nadav sought the dismissal after the defendants on Monday said typefaces are not subject to copyright protection, and that there were “profound differences” between the logos in question. Roy Gross, a lawyer for Nadav, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Len Venger, a lawyer for the defendants, said they are happy with the dismissal, and “firmly believe that the lawsuit had no merit.” Warner Bros Records is part of Warner Music Group, which is controlled by billionaire Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries. Cher, 70, was born Cherilyn Sarkisian, which is how her name appears in the court docket. She legally changed her name to Cher in 1978. (rtr)

Scarlett Johansson files for divorce, requests custody of daughter

LOS ANGELES - American actress Scarlett Johansson filed for divorce from French journalist Romain Dauriac in New York this week and asked for full custody of the couple’s daughter, as her estranged husband asked her to return to the negotiating table. Johansson, 32, filed for divorce in New York Supreme Court on Tuesday on grounds of “the marriage being irretrievably broken.” She requested joint legal custody and residential custody of the couple’s 2-year-old daughter, Rose, according to court documents. The couple married in 2014. The court documents ask for the enforcement of a prenuptial agreement dated Sept. 24, 2014. In a statement on Wednesday, Dauriac said it was “unfortunate”

that Johansson filed for divorce in court “and made our personal differences so public.” “I would implore her to withdraw her action promptly and to go back, as uncomfortable as it might be, to the negotiating table,” he said. The “Lost in Translation” actress declined to comment on the divorce. “As a devoted mother and private person and with complete awareness that my daughter will one day be old enough to read the news about herself, I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage,” Johansson said in a statement. The divorce filing comes after media reports in January that the couple were separated. A lawyer for Dauriac said they both presently live in New York, but not together.

This is the second marriage for “Captain America” star Johansson, who was married to “Deadpool” actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011. (rtr)

Farmland submerged in water as Lake Buyan expands SINGARAJA - The amount of farmlands submerged in water spilling over from Lake Buyan in the hamlets of Buyan and Dasong in Pancasari, Sukasada, is increasing. More and more farmers are watching in despair as the losses they are suffering grow larger.

The amount of farmlands submerged in water spilling over from Lake Buyan in the hamlets of Buyan and Dasong in Pancasari, Sukasada, is increasing.

Based on the data submitted by the Buleleng Agriculture Agency in mid-February, there were 25 hectares of submerged famrlands in Febuary. However, during a meeting with a number of farmer groups on Wednesday (Mar. 8), the latest report from Dasong hamlet chief Made Suartana, stated that there are now 35 hectares of submerged farmlands. As a consequence, 57 famers have los their sourve of income. “The water continues to rise. More and more farmlands are becoming submerged. Formerly, our farmland was productive, but now people are even fishing in them”, he said. This phenomenon, he continued, takes place every five years. The only way to prevent this is by dredging out silt and other sedimentation from Lake Bunyan. “It’s the only way to deal with this problem. Currently, the lake is experiencing severe siltation”, he said.

The government’s plan to arrange the lake as part of its designation as a national tourism strategic area (KSPN) has been at issue. Hopefully, this matter will move from discussion to action. “We hope the program can run as expected. It is also important in relation to tourism. So far, the only action that has been taken is to remove weeds fomr the lake”, he said. Meanwhile hamlet chief of Buyan, Gede Ada Putra, questioned what kind of assisstance would be provided to farmers by the district government. Not only have farmlands been submerged by lake water, but farmlands were also hot by flashfloods in December 2016 and again last Febuary. “Most of our farmlands have been affected by disaster. Some time ago, there was information about assistance for us. What kind of help is this? Please explain this to us”, he said. Head of the Buleleng Agriculture Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said that in a meeting some time ago a group of farmer proposed that the government provide seeds for crops such as strawberries. This needs to be communicated to seedling nurseries. As for the farmlands submerged in lake water, Swantara said tha his office would monitor the situation. “ Seedlings can be only be distributed in 2019 because the current budgetary year is over”, he said. BANGLI - In order to avoid friction between the men carrying ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) in parades to welcome Nyepi (Day of Silence) Caka Year 1939 that falls on Tuesday (Mar. 28), residents are being urged not to consume alcohol. This was confirmed by Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) Bangli, Nyoman Sukra, on Wednesday (Mar. 8). “We are saking this of residents so as to avoide any friction of commotion amongst

hamlet groups. Hopefully, such negative things can be avoided for the sake of comfort and security during the celebration of the Nyepi”, said Shukra. IN addtion to being asked not to consume alcohol, there is a prohibition on the use of fireworks or other explosives as these also have the potential to cause friction amongst people.. “In the near future we will be holding a meeting with police, chiefs of customary villages including headmen, in order to discuss

preventive measures to avoid friction. In addition, we ask that the ogoh-ogoh parades coordinate with the security forces so that the celebration of Nyepi can run safely and neatly”, he said. He also appealed to each hamlet to use natural materials in the making of the ogohogoh. The use of plastic or styrofoam should be avoided. Although this appeal was already issued some time ago, Shukra admited that some ogoh-ogoh are still being made with

plastic materials. “Though some people are still using materials like styrofoam and plastic, we hope that in the future all residents will use only natural raw materials”, he said, adding that reffernces to political parties are also discouraged. Further, he said that based on data collected by police authorities, at least 280 ogoh-ogoh will be paraded this year. “We restrict ogohogoh parades to a finish time of 21:00 so as to avoide any problemes. Governor of Bali supports Benoa Bay reclamation

Commission VII questions his basis for agreement DENPASAR - The Governor of Bali’s stand on the Benoa Bay reclamation plan was revealed during the meeting with Commission VII of the central House of Representatives and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and its ranks, SKK Migas and LNG Pelindo that took place the at South Pier of Benoa Harbor on Tuesday (Mar. 7). This meeting was also attended by government of Bali representatives from the Environment Agency and the head of Bali Forest Services. Representative of the Bali Forestry Service, Wayan Darma, explicitly stated that the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, supports the plan to backfill an area of 700 hectares in Benoa Bay. “The government of Bali, represented by the governor, indeed supports the reclamation plan and has used very means to show this support and has attempted to comply

with all existing regulations and has encourages the initiator of the project to meet all requirements of these regulations”, he said, accompanied by the Head of the Bali Environment Agency, Yupi Wahyundari. The goovernor’S support of the reclamation plan, added Darma, was presented during a meeting held by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and also during the last meeting with the investment coordinating board (BKPM). Moreover, the governor has sent letters to central government (KLKH) three times to ask whether the EIA (environmental impact aseesement) for the reclamation plan has is rejected or accepted. So far, the KLKH has not issued an environmental permit related to discussions of the EIA. “In essence, since the permit has been suspended for so long, the governor asked for certainty about whether the envrinonmental

impact analysis permit has been accepted or rejected. If this uncerrtain condition persists for too long, it could set a bad precedence fo other development projects. There is a plan to construct a new airport that would also invovle reclamation of the sea, this could trigger further problems”, he explained. Chairman of Commission VII of the Central House of Representatives, Satya Widya Yudha, said that he was surprised to learn that the governor of Bali, in fact, supports the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. He also questioned the basis on which the governor supports this plan, considering that the KLKH has not decided whether an enviroenmentla permit will be issued or not. If the governor supports the project, it should be relatively easy. The KLKH will approve the EIA if local issues, especially socio-cultural issues have been resolved. “The basis of the governor’s agreement

should serve as a reference. What is the basis? Has the plan passed through public consultation about whether the EIA should be approved by the ministry, or not? If problems at the village, subdistrict and provincial levels have been resolved, this becomes a basis for the central government to approve the EIA. In Jakarta it does not pass through such mechanisms. We do not want similar case to happen in Bali”, he said. A member of Commission VII of the central House of Representatives, Kurtubi, said that the regents in West Lombok and East Lombok have agreed to do the sand dredging in the region of NTB for the purpose of supplying the reclamation of Benoa Bay. However, the people in West Lombok and East Lombok staunchly rejected the idea out of concern that such dredging would damage the environemnt and destroy the workplace of local fishermen. (kmb32)

Chanel collection takes off at Paris Fashion week

PARIS - With a giant white rocket in the middle of Grand Palais Hall in Paris, Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld took his A-list audience on an intergalactic journey with a space-inspired collection on the closing day of Paris Fashion Week. The German designer opted for a mix of a galactic and 1960s-inspired style for the French luxury powerhouse’s ready-to-wear show on Tuesday, full of star-studded glitz and glamour. Models, with beehivestyled long hair or short bobs, headbands and heavy makeup, walked around the rocket in glittery tweed jackets, oversized aviators and knee-high sparkly, metallic boots. Actress-models Lily-Rose Depp and Cara Delevingne were in attendance along with singer-songwriters Pharell Williams and Lily Allen. Alone at refuge, Sridana hopes to have a home soon

FLASH floods occurred almost a month ago in the area of Kubujati, North Banyuning village, and since then relevant agencies have been working to divert the path of the river in order to prevent subsequent disasters. According to obeservations in the field on Wednesday (Mar. 8), work on the river appears to be completed. However one local residents is still living in a temporary shelter. His name is Kadek Sridana. This middle-aged man is one of the five residents whose homes were washed away by the swift current of the flooded river. Sridana has had no choice but to remain in this temporary shelter located not far from where his house once stood -unlike the other victims of this disaster who have taken temporary residents with family members in the area. “The others have temporarily moved in with their relatives, but me and my wife and kids are still living in this temporary shelter” , he explained. Although their basic necessities, such as food and clean water are provided for here, they have a great desire to return home. All

they can do is wait for a helping hand from the government. “We are not complaining about this location, but we would very much like to have a home. Yesterday the housing agency came by to collect data. Hopefully, there will be help very soon”, he added. Sridana, expalined that since the disaster he has been unable to work and so he has been taking on debt in order to provide for his family. He feels that this is a mounting burden for his future. All their belongings were swept away in the flood. The only thing that survived was the underwear he was wearing. “ All our belongings are gone”, said this middle-aged man. Meanwhile, Acting Head of the Buleleng Housing and Land Settlement Agency, Ni Nyoman Suratini, has said that Sridana and the four other families who lost their homes in the flood will be provided with assistance, once the land has been backfilled. “The location of the new houses is still being backfilled by the BPBD. Once the backfilling is complete, construction will start”, concluded Suratini. (sos)

AMLAPURA - Many residents of the subdistrict of Selat, Karangasem, are quite adept at making a kind of traditional toffee snack known locally as dodol, as it is a mandatory ingredient in offerings for their ngusaba dalem rituals. Despite the general popularity of this tasty treat from Selat, their dodol (made of glutinous rice and palm sugar) has yet to be commercialized.

“We only make the ngusaba dodol (toffee) when it is required for the yearly ritual”, said 38 year old Geriana Kangin hamlet resident Ni Wayan Nanik Budiani, on Wednesday (Mar. 8). Pretty much all residents of East Geriana are now busy making ngusaba dodol in preparation for Duda customary villages’ upcoming ritual. Nanik Budiani does not want to be left behind, so for the last two weeks, this mother of three has been preparing the ingredients needed for the special toffee: white sticky rice, black rice, palm sugar and coconut milk. Ngusaba dalem also known as the ngusaba dodol in Duda customary village will be held on March 25. Ngusaba dodol is categorized as a grandiose ritual

that takes place in at Duda customary village and other villages in the sub-district of Selat. Apart from dodol, local residents have also been preparing other traditional cakes for the ritual including jaje uli, crackers and satuh. Making toffee is not easy, as it requires tenacity in order to get good results. First the sticky rice must be processed into flour and those who are especially fanatic will only use glutinous rice that they have grown themselves. White glutinous rice and black glutinous rice flour are then mixed together and cooked in coconut milk. To get a particularly savory flavor, the glutinous rice in usually cooked on a wood burning stove using special fuel such as coconut husk and dried coconut fronds. The cooking must be done carefully and the fire must not burn too hot, or the mixture will burn. Men will often help their wives make this toffee as the process takes a long time. “It must cook for about 4 hours during which time the batter must continually be stirred, until the water is all gone”, explained Nanik Budiani. Much in the same way that toffee artisans in Buleleng do, the toffee for ngusaba dodol is also wrapped in dried corn husk or areca nut husk. (117)

DENPASAR - Based on the data disclosed by the Bali Agriculture Agency and Logistics Agency, Bali has a surplus of rice, shallots and chili. The price of chili and shallots should therefor remain stable.

According to the Chief of Bali Logistics Agency, Miftahul Ulum, the normal price of shallots is IDR 25,000-IDR 30,000. “We have given special attention to shallots but if instructed to prepare shallots stocks, we are ready to do so”, he said. The Logistics Agency has enough rice stocks to last for about 7-8 months. “So, we are not worried about the stock of premium grade rice” he said on Tuesday (Mar. 7). The exact length of time that stocks will last cannot be predicted as it depends on demand, however the 700 tons of premium grade rice that is currently avaible is expected to be sufficent. Nyepi, Galungan and Kuningan feasts are predicted not to have significant impact on prices as these holidays are only celebrated in Bali, not nationally. Nevertheless, Ulum said that the Logostics Agency is continuing to communicate with relevant agencies and the regional inflation monitoring team (PRID). Head of the Bali Agriculture Agency, I.B. Wisnu Wardhana, said that there is a surplus of rice stocks. The land area used for planting rice in Bali amounts to some 143,000 hectares with average rice yields of over 500,000 tons per year. Lee, denies all charges against him, his lawyer said on Thursday, at the start of what the special prosecutor said could be the “trial of the century” amid a political scandal that has rocked the country. Lee has been charged with bribery, embezzlement and other offences in a corruption scandal that has already led to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye. Lee, who is being detained at Seoul Detention Centre, did not attend court. A defendant does not have to turn up during a preparatory hearing, held to organise evidence and set dates for witness testimony. The date of the next hearing will be decided next week. KABUL - Gunmen dressed as medics attacked a hospital in the Afghan capital on Wednesday and battled security forces for hours, killing more than 30 people and wounding dozens in an assault claimed by Islamic State. A suicide bomber blew himself up at the rear of the 400-bed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan hospital, across the road from the heavily fortified U.S. embassy, providing the signal for three attackers with automatic weapons and hand grenades to open fire inside the complex, according to witnesses. Defence Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said the attack was suppressed by mid-afternoon, with all three gunmen killed. As security forces swept the hospital buildings, another ministry spokesman said they found more than 30 dead and 50 wounded, including doctors, patients and hospital staff. Earlier, a spokesman for the public health ministry said three dead and 66 wounded had been taken to other hospitals in the city. The gunmen, dressed as medical personnel, had taken up positions on the upper floors of the hospital and engaged special forces sent to the scene, officials said. Security forces blocked off the area around the hospital, near a busy traffic intersection, and special forces soldiers descended on to the roof of the main building from helicopters. Sporadic gunfire could be heard for several hours and, as fighting went on, there was a second explosion, which a spokesman said was caused when a car inside the hospital complex blew up. A statement from Islamic State’s Amaq News Agency said its fighters had attacked the hospital, while an Afghan Taliban spokesman denied responsibility, saying the Islamist insurgency had “no connection” with the attack. The raid on the hospital followed warnings by government officials that high-profile attacks in Kabul were likely to escalate this year. With U.S. President Donald Trump yet to announce his policy for Afghanistan, where the top U.S. commander has said thousands more international troops may be needed to maintain stability, the attack also pointed to Islamic State’s growing threat. The movement, whose local branch is called Afghanistan Islamic State of Iraq and Syria - Khorasan province (ISIS-K) is opposed to both the Western-backed government in Kabul and the Taliban. Belarus suspends ‘parasite’ tax after record protests

MINSK - Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Thursday a tax on those not in full-time employment should not be enforced this year, after widespread public opposition to the levy led to the biggest protests in years. Popularly known as the “law against social parasites” it requires those who work less than 183 days per year to pay the government $250 in compensation for lost taxes. It has gone down badly with the Belarussian public at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet after more than two years of economic recession. A protest against the tax in Minsk last month drew around 2,000 people, the largest demonstration in the country for six years. Similar protests have since been held beyond the capital and more were planned by the opposition for March. “We will not collect this money for 2016 from those who were meant to pay it,” Lukashenko was quoted as saying by state news agency Belta in a rare concession to public outcry. Lukashenko, who once described himself as the “last dictator in Europe,” has run the Belarussian economy along Soviet-style command lines since 1994. He said the authorities could make amendments to the tax, but would not scrap it entirely. Seeking to im-

prove ties with the European Union and lessen Belarus’s dependence on Russia, Lukashenko has over the past year heeded calls from the West to show greater lenience towards political opposition. Lukashenko said those who have already paid the ‘parasite’ tax for 2016 would be reimbursed if they find a job in 2017. According to the last tax inspection, 470,000 people should have paid the tax, but only 50,000 have done so, generating just $8 million in extra revenue for the government. The country has been in recession since 2015 due to a slump in oil prices and contagion from an economic crisis in neighbouring Russia, with which its economy is closely tied and where many Belarussians work in order to send money home. Control board: Puerto Rico needs to take emergency action

SAN JUAN — A federal control board warned Wednesday that Puerto Rico’s government needs to take “major emergency actions” to avoid shutting down because its cash flow is critically low. The comments published in a letter to Gov. Ricardo Rossello are the sharpest yet made by a board that recently began overseeing the U.S. territory’s finances.

The board released an audited financial statement that found this year’s government expenses could be understated by $360 million to $810 million. It warned that Puerto Rico could face a $190 million cash deficit by July. “Without major emergency actions, the Commonwealth soon will be unable to pay essential services,

including pensions, education, health care and public safety in a matter of months,” wrote board chairman Jose Carrion. The warning comes ahead of a meeting on Monday where the board is expected to approve a fiscal plan that many believe will be amended to include austerity measures. The board recommended in its letter that Puerto Rico’s government take four key steps immediately. Among those is a furlough for government workers, teachers and other public employees to save as much as $40 million. The furlough for government workers would be four days a month while those for teachers would be two days a month. The board also advised the government to slash professional services contracts by 50 percent and cut health care costs by negotiating drug prices and reducing the rates of health plans and providers. Rico’s Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Administration to take immediate control of all the government’s accounts, revenues and expenses. The public corporation was created last year and has fiscal and administrative autonomy. The letter sparked concern among Puerto Ricans and riled government officials, including Public Affairs Secretary Ramon Rosario. “This administration is not considering furloughs for its public employees in the fiscal plan,” he told reporters. “To the board: Do not shoot from the hip.” Elias Sanchez, the governor’s representative to the board, called the audited financial statement flawed and questioned the numbers provided. He said the government will create a group to meet with the board and review the analysis and resolve discrepancies. The board’s letter was released on the same day that the Spanish-lan-

guage daily El Nuevo Dia published a column by Carrion warning that medium- and long-term measures will not be sufficient. “Puerto Rico has run out of money and time,” he wrote. “This is only going to get worse as the clock keeps ticking.” Gov. Ricardo Rossello submitted a revised fiscal plan last week that contains several medium- and longterm measures to cut costs and generate revenue. The plan lacks austerity measures the board is seeking, such as cutting government payroll by 30 percent and slashing the public pension system by 10 percent. It is said that in 2005, when an ngenteg linggih ritual was held, there was an offering maker who encountered a juwuk linglang or tangerine. It was then halved, strangely it exuded fire. This tangerine was then mixed with some elements of fruit, herbs and oils. Besides, there is a medicine known as manik sekecap made from honey bees. The honey is not taken from anywhere but from the chamber shrine where the bees make their nests. Likewise, there is lungsir pancawarna or multicolored sea snail. People who suffer from diseases of the eye, this medicine can be invoked at the Batu Coblong spring shrine. Another shrine is called swine shrine where people can invoke medicine for their livestock. CIA contractors likely source of latest WikiLeaks release

WASHINGTON - Contractors likely breached security and handed over documents describing the Central Intelligence Agency’s use of hacking tools to anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

The two officials told Reuters they believed the published documents about CIA hacking techniques used between 2013 and 2016 were authentic. One of the officials with knowledge of the investigation said companies that are contractors for the CIA have been checking to see which of their employees had access to the material that WikiLeaks published, and then going over their computer logs, emails and other communications for any evidence of who might be responsible. On Tuesday in a press release, WikiLeaks itself said the CIA had “lost control” of an archive of hacking methods and it appeared to have been circulated “among former U.S. government hackers and contractors in an unauthorized manner, one of whom has provided WikiLeaks with portions of the archive.” The CIA, which is the United States’ civilian foreign intelligence service, declined to comment on the authenticity of purported intelligence documents. Fire at Guatemala shelter kills 22 girls, police blame arson SAN JOSE PINULA - A fire tore through a home for abused teenagers and children in Guatemala, killing at least 22 girls on Wednesday after some residents set mattresses ablaze following an overnight attempt to escape from the overcrowded center, police said. A crowd of relatives, some wailing with grief, gathered outside the government-run Virgen de Asuncion home for youths aged up to 18, in San Jose Pinula, 25 km (15 miles) southwest of the capital, Guatemala City. Hospitals reported about 40 people being treated for burns. The blaze started when a group of young people who had been isolated by authorities after a riot and an escape attempt at the center on Tuesday night set fire to mattresses, said Nery Ramos, head of Guatemala’s national police. A panel of judges at the East Jakarta court on Tuesday jailed Mahful Muis Tumanurung and Ahmad Mussadeq for five years and Andry Cahya for three years for blasphemy. The men were cleared of treason charges. A lawyer for the men, Yudhistira, described it as a “malicious prosecution” that had tainted Indonesia’s justice system and said would consider

whether to appeal. Indonesia’s blasphemy laws have come under greater scrutiny since Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Jakarta’s Christian governor, was put on trial for allegedly insulting the Koran. He has denied wrongdoing but his trial has inflamed religious tensions. Almost all blasphemy cases in recent years have ended in conviction. Indonesia has the world’s largest population of Muslims, the majority of whom adhere to moderate Sunni

beliefs, and it recognizes six religions including Hinduism, Catholicism and Buddhism, but minorities, even within Islam, have faced rising intolerance in recent years. Human rights organisations criticised the verdicts. “The sentences show how Indonesia’s vague, coercive and discriminatory blasphemy laws are being used to punish people for peacefully exercising minority beliefs,” said Josef Benedict, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Indonesian court jails former Reuters journalist for seven months for drug possession

DENPASAR - An Indonesian court sentenced former Reuters journalist David Fox to seven months in prison on Thursday for possession of hashish, less than the one-year jail term sought by prosecutors, meaning that he can be released in a few weeks. Fox was found with just over 10 grams (0.35 oz) of hashish when police detained him in a bar and raided his home in Sanur, Bali, in October. The presiding judge, Erwin Djong, said Fox had received a lighter sentence than prosecutors had asked for because he had been cooperative and polite in court and had no prior record. Fox, who worked for Reuters for two decades until March 2011 and has since been working as an independent consultant, had admitted possession and said

he used hashish to cope with stress after his work as a journalist, which included covering wars and natural disasters. His lawyer, Haposan Sihombing, said Fox accepted the ruling and that the British national, who was brought up in Zimbabwe, would return to the United Kingdom after serving the remainder of his sentence. Indonesia has strict drug laws and even possession of small amounts of drugs can incur lengthy jail sentences. Indonesian President Joko Widodo has ordered an intensification in the war on drugs in the Southeast Asian country that includes the execution of traffickers. (rtr)

BARCELONA - A frustrated Fernando Alonso let rip at McLaren’s engine partners Honda on Wednesday after another difficult afternoon of pre-season testing. Spanish and Italian media quoted the two-times Formula One world champion as saying that everyone in the team was ready to win “apart from Honda”. Speaking to Sky Sports television, the Spaniard left no doubt about his state of mind after ending the day 12th of the 14 drivers in action and with only 46 laps on the board -- less than a race distance -- compared to 102 for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. “Tough, tough test so far - the first week and this week,” he said. “We need to improve right now if we want to arrive in Australia ready. “We are not fully ready to complete a grand prix yet,” continued Alonso. “The power unit has too

many problems that we need to deal with... we cannot say that we are happy. We are frustrated and disappointed. “I am driving at my best... I feel the best driver out there, I just need an engine that can run as quick as the others on the straights.” Alonso estimated the McLaren was giving away 30kph to rivals on the straights and it was hard to have a real feeling of the car with so few laps strung together. “It is not a surprise, last week was not ideal for us,” he said. “Today more or less we knew we were in front of a tough day so we tried to learn as much as we can.” Honda’s return to Formula One in 2015, when they renewed a pre-

viously successful partnership with former champions McLaren, has been traumatic. In 2015, McLaren had their worst ever season and finished ninth overall with just 27 points after suffering endless reliability problems with the power unit. They finished sixth last year, with 76 points but still no closer to winning a race for the first time since 2012, but had raised hopes for 2017 after the rules on engine development were relaxed. Testing so far has been more reminiscent of 2015, although Alonso said the situation was different because Honda had far more data to work on. “Probably this year is a bit more frustrating because the change of regulations and things like that, you have higher hopes when you think you can close that gap over the winter,” said the Spaniard. OREGON - Nike Inc will launch a hijab for female Muslim athletes early next year, becoming the first major sports apparel maker to offer a traditional Islamic head scarf designed specifically for competition, the company said on Wednesday. The head covering, marketed under the “Pro Hijab” brand, is designed to allow athletes to observe the traditional Islamic practice of covering the head without compromising performance. Made from a lightweight, flexible material, the hijab is expected to hit stores shelves in early 2018, Nike said in a statement. In recent years, the hijab has become the most visible symbol of Islamic culture in the United States and Europe. Many Muslim women cover their heads in public with the hijab as a sign of modesty, but some critics see it as a sign of female oppression. With sensitivities over immigration and the perceived threat of Muslim extremism running high, the head scarf has led to attacks against Muslim women. At the same time, the hijab has evolved in a symbol of diversity that Nike has embraced. The Women’s March on Washington, held the day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, used the face of a woman wearing a hijab in an American flag pattern as its promotional image. Muslim athletes visiting Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, just outside of Portland, have complained about the difficulties of wearing a hijab while competing, according to the company. The company consulted with Muslim women athletes from around the world, including Middle Eastern runners and cyclists, in the designing the hijab. Other companies have also set their sights on hijab sales to Muslim athletes. Last year, Danish sportswear company Hummel unveiled a soccer jersey with an attached hijab for the Afghanistan national women’s soccer team. Non-professional women Muslim athletes have used athletic hijabs made by smaller companies. But Nike’s annual net sales in the billions, and its reach in popular culture, can do more to bring Muslim athletes into the fold, said Amna Al Haddad, a Nike sponsored weightlifter from the United Arab Emirates who consulted on “Pro Hijab.” (rtr)

The abduction of the chestnut mare, called Unicka, and the colt, named Vampire Dany, was discovered by the horses’ trainer at the Wave stables near Pisa, northern

Italy, when he went to feed them on Tuesday morning, the stables said in a statement. “The entire stables is protected by a security system which was turned on as normal,” the stables said. “This make us think the heist was carefully planned by experts in the equine world.” Italian media have speculated that the thieves plan to demand a

ransom, as the animals are registered, making it harder to sell them on the black market. Both have already distinguished themselves in trotting, one of Italy’s biggest horseracing businesses. Unicka won both Italy’s Trotting Derby and Orsi Mangelli Grand Prize in 2016. Vampire Dany is descended from superstar racer Varenne, who was so popular in the early 2000s

Pulisic scores 1st Champions League goal, lifting Dortmund

Christian Pulisic reached yet another milestone, scoring his first Champions League goal to help Borussia Dortmund reach the quarterfinals.

The 18-year-old midfielder from Hershey, Pennsylvania, chipped the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Ederson from 7 yards in the 59th minute, giving the hosts the aggregate lead in a 4-0 win over Portugal’s Benfica on Wednesday night. Dortmund overcame a 1-0 deficit from the first leg for a 4-1 win in the homeand-home, total-goals series. Pulisic also assisted on the first of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s three goals, flicking Ousmane Dembele’s corner kick to the far post for the fourth-minute goal that tied the matchup. “It’s a very special evening,” Pulisic said. “Unbelievable.” Pulsiic became the seventh American to score in the Champions League, joining Borussia Dortmund’s Jovan Kirovski, PSV Eindhoven’s and Glasgow Rangers’ DaMarcus Beasley, Rangers’ Maurice Edu, Schalke’s Jermaine Jones, Anderlecht’s Sacha Kljestan and Borussia Moenchengladbach’s Fabian Johnson. MANCHESTER — It was around this time last year that Marcus Rashford was scoring the winner in his first Manchester derby and establishing himself as the main striker at MANCHESTER UNITED. Having already scored twice on both his United debut and his first start in the Premier League, Rashford — a shy, 18-year-old local lad plucked from the under-19s to solve an injury crisis — would soon be an FA Cup winner and earning an England call-up for the European Championship. He was widely regarded as a future star of English soccer. Fast forward 12 months and Rashford has drifted out of the spotlight, and is mainly found either on United’s substitutes’ bench or pushed out to the wing to accommodate the new striker sensation at Old Trafford, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Until now. With Ibrahimovic starting a three-match domestic suspension, Rashford is set to be back leading the line for United — and his first game doesn’t get much bigger: An FA CUP quarterfinal at Chelsea on Monday. It’s a chance for Rashford to remind manager Jose Mourinho that he is a striker, first and foremost, and that he can still be the future at United when 35-year-old Ibrahimovic chooses to leave the club, which could even be as early as this summer. “I want to become the ultimate center forward,” he said. Rashford was thrust from the academy and started 18 of United’s final 19 games last season, scoring eight goals. But he has only started 10 out of 26 league games this season, and just one as the striker. He has seven goals in all competitions, only three of which have come in 2017. Rashford has expressed his frustration at not getting as many starts this season but understands that Mourinho has a wealth of attacking talent at his disposal. Given the season Ibrahimovic is having in his first year, Rashford cannot expect to retain his place when the Swedish striker returns. But Rashford will become a firm favorite of Mourinho’s if he can score the winner on Monday at the Portuguese coach’s former club and then help United win upcoming league games against MIDDLESBROUGH and West Bromwich Albion in its push for Champions League qualification. Rashford also needs to stay on the radar of England coach Gareth Southgate ahead of next year’s World Cup in Russia. He won’t find it easy against Chelsea, though. The London club is the PREMIER LEAGUE leader and has the joint-best defense in the league with Tottenham. If Rashford does get behind center backs Cesar Azpilicueta or Gary Cahill, he’ll have sweeper David Luiz — enjoying an excellent season back at Stamford Bridge — to beat. Chelsea’s only loss at Stamford Bridge this season came in September against Liverpool, when the team was a few weeks away from switching to a three-man defense — a tactical change that has reignited its season. Rashford has proved himself the man for the big occasion — he even scored three minutes into his England debut in May — so expect him to make an impact in the standout match of the last eight. Here’s what else to look out for on a weekend when there is action in the FA CUPand the PREMIER LEAGUE: FA CUP

If Chelsea-Man United is the heavyweight quarterfinal match, then perhaps the most intriguing is the visit of non-league team Lincoln to Premier League giant Arsenal on Saturday. Lincoln has already beaten top-flight team Burnley as well as two second-tier teams in Ipswich and Brighton on its stunning FA CUP run, and is the first non-league team in 103 years to reach this stage of the world’s oldest club knockout competition. It will come up against an Arsenal side reeling from its humiliating exit from the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich, which clinched a 10-2 win on aggregate with a 5-1 win at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. The game could again see fan protests against Arsene Wenger, Arsenal’s long-serving manager. The other quarterfinal matches are Middlesbrough at home to Manchester City on Saturday and Tottenham hosting third-tier Millwall on Sunday. (ap)
