‘Chappie’ whirs to top of North American box office
LOS ANGELES - Artificial intelligence thriller “Chappie” about a robot that learns to think and feel, debuted at the top of the North American box office over the weekend, industry estimates showed Sunday. The droid, who is stolen from police and reprogrammed, stars alongside Dev Patel, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver in the dystopian romp, which took in $13.3 million, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. The film kicked last weekend’s top earner, con-artist flick “Focus,” into second place. The dark comedy, starring Will Smith as a crook who takes on a protege played by Margot Robbie, raked in $10 million. Debuting in third with $8.6 million was sequel “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” featuring an all-star, if aging, cast including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton and Richard Gere. The tale of retirees staying in an expanding hotel in Jaipur, India, also stars Dev Patel as the facility’s manager, in his second weekend box office debut.
Falling to fourth was British spy film “Kingsman: The Secret Service” with $8.3 million, while children’s animated romp “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” trailed behind with $7 million. Racy bondage tale “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which saw a record February opening, meanwhile slid into sixth place. The erotic tale of billionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and his sadomasochistic relationship with college graduate Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) took in $5.6 million. Kevin Costner sport drama “McFarland, USA,” the story of a small-town cross-country team made of students from immigrant families, was in seventh place with $5.3 million in its third week out. Landing in eighth with $5.1 million was horror flick “The Lazarus Effect,” about medical students who discover a way to bring people back to life. Teen comedy “The Duff” fell one spot to ninth, pulling in $4.9 million. And Vince Vaughn comedy “Unfinished Business” debuted to the tune of $4.8 million, in tenth. (afp)

Gothic Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian rock Givenchy in Paris PARIS — Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian were the queens of the night at Givenchy’s starstudded dusk show in Paris, rocking all-black Givenchy outfits side-by-side as Kanye West, also in black, lurked in the back. The remaining celebrity attendees, actresses Jessica Chastain, Amanda Seyfried and Noomi Rapace just didn’t stand a chance. Other shows were all about creature comforts, with Kenzo
treating bleary-eyed guests to coffee and cookies and singer Lorde, who’s sold over 17 million records at the tender age of 18, took a moment to relax, shying away from interviews in the new spring sun inside the Grand Palais. The newly-blond Kardashian wore a figure-hugging jumpsuit, with black lacing over a very revealing cleavage, hugging and smiling Perry who stayed demure in a loose black lace shawl. (ap)
Silversmith center since Dutch period
Now, Celuk only a memory A silversmith made silver accesories on his studio. Now, the silver craftsmen here are having a hard time passing on their knowledge to the next generation.

The 63-year-old man is one of the few people in Celuk who is still working as a silversmith. “I’m working on this order of a ring,” he said while adjusting his glasses. The 2x3 meter room serves as Wayan Suweta’s studio, where he produces various kinds of silver handicrafts. Four tables that were formerly used by his employees to sit at while they produced silver works, are now collecting dust. Only one table, on which is placed a variety of tools, is still being used to make silverworks. “My employees are no longer working here.
Because there are so few orders, they can simply work from home if need be,” he said. Wayan went on to tell the story of Celuk. Under the Dutch administration, around 1915, Celuk village area had become the center for silversmithing in Bali. At that time, people only produced ritual objects such as cap, ceraka and cangku. Around 1935, silversmiths here started making jewelry used by kings and Dutch officials. “At that time, the invaders also introduced our craft works to local kings such as the king of Gianyar because only
the Dutch had access to the king at that time,” he said. From 1966, Bali was increasingly open to the outside world. As a result, more and more travellers came to Bali, especially to Celuk village, to look for silverworks. “The arrival of foreign travellers, coincided with the Dutch effort to introduce silver products to Europeans,” Wayan explained. The silversmiths of Celuk village experienced rapid development. By 1970, Celuk craftsmen could export their silverworks overseas. At that time he said, the designs of necklaces; bracelets and earrings by the artisans at Celuk village were in great demand. This golden period went on into the 1990s. “During this golden period, the silver crafts
were often on back-order for travelers or businessmen,” he reminisced with a smile. Around 1995, jewelry products from countries such as Thailand, China and India began to enter onto the world market, creating competition for Celuk craftsmen. Coupled with the Bali bombing incidents (I and II), the sale of silverworks produced by Celuk village was began to suffer. “Ever since then, both individual craftsmen and art shops in Celuk have been on the wane, with only very few surviving,” he said. Now, the silver craftsmen here are having a hard time passing on their knowledge to the next generation. Suweta admitted that was in part because of a gap in the passing on of the tradition. Since

his childhood Wayan was commanded by his parents to make silverworks after school. However being lenient with his own children has meant that they have not learned the craft, even though they are now wanting to continue this tradition. “Right now, my sons are indeed willing to continue my business but they cannot make silverworks,” he said.
